Update On Hotel & Golf Club Upgrade It is our pleasure to continue to update you on the progress of the Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore hotel and villas, as well as, the new Country Club and renovated Golf Clubhouse at Laguna National. Contributed by Patrick Bowers

For those who visit the club regularly, you will now see that the West Wing of the original Clubhouse is being hoarded and prepared for final demolition. This will make way for the new Hotel, as well as, new Country Club facilities, including a Spa. The old Driving Range has now been torn down and the machines are moving into the main part of the building now.

With the demolition phase now underway, the setting of pilings will follow shortly thereafter. This portion of the Clubhouse and the property will remain under construction until approximately first quarter of 2016 when the anticipated grand opening takes place. 

The demolition of the previous Driving Range structure has been completed to make way for construction of the new Hotel, as well as, a private Teaching and Practice Facility (open to Laguna Members & Dusit Guests only) Club | 11

Rendering of the Practice Facility wing of the new Hotel. The ground floor features natural turf hitting bays for private use, accessible by guests staying on that floor. The second level hitting bays are for the exclusive use of Laguna Members and Dusit Guests.

The East Wing of the Clubhouse remains fully open and will continue to remain until an estimated closure date within the third quarter of 2014 when full renovations commence. Temporary Golfer Facilities will be available at that time, as well as, a new and exciting Food and Beverage outlet. Currently, your favorite Japanese restaurants are integrated into the space that was formerly known as the “Members Lounge”. Selected items from the former Pine Valley menu have also been incorporated into the Lakes Café menu. The fitness machines and workout zones have now been incorporated into the Men’s and Ladies’ Change Rooms and continue to be patronized by many of our Country Club Members. Tennis facilities remain available as usual, whilst the Social & Country Club reception stays accessible at the main lobby.

12 | Club

One of the exciting highlights of the new Teaching and Practice Facility will be the opening of a natural turfgrass “putting course”. This is intended to bring a unique feature to Laguna National’s Golf Membership, as well as, encourage you to introduce your junior players to the game in a manner that is much less intimidating than full length golf courses. The turf on the greens will match those on the golf course. In this way, the Putting Course will also serve as a strategic practice ground for both veteran golfers and league players. We look forward to provide you with regular updates on the progress of the construction at Laguna National, as well as, the amenities that you will enjoy as Members of the Club. Thank you for your ongoing support as we renovate and upgrade the facilities.

Golf Course Improvements A Volunteer Task Force has been elected by the Board of Directors and Management to assist Members with their feedback and suggestions pertaining to the course upgrading works on the Masters course, in particular holes 3, 8 and 17. Contributed by Bradley Leahey

Course upgrading works will commence during the first month of the new year. In order for Members and their guests to continue playing 18 holes of golf amidst the golf course upgrading works, hole 18 will be converted to Par 3. This will make the course play as a Par 71 instead of a Par 72. The respective Par 3 distances will be at 150 yards from the Black Tees, 135 yards from the Blue Tees, 120 yards from the White Tees and 105 yards from the Red Tees. The golf course construction team will focus on improving the fairway playability and presentation of the hole by changing the fairway turf from 328 Bermuda to Platinum Paspalum which we have already introduced to holes 3, 8 and 17 on the Masters Course, as well as on our Tees & Greens on the World Classic course. Drainage of the fairways will be improved when we remove the excess thatch that has built up over the years. New sand will be introduced into the fairway and green side bunkers. In order to improve the water run-off, fairways and green surrounds will be reshaped as we work on enhancing fairway playability.

We look forward to sharing the finished product of hole 18 with our Members and guests in 2014. The team will embark on the remaining holes of the Masters course, working on 2 holes at one time, with 1 hole of each nine under construction. The works will be ongoing for the next 2 years. During this period, Members are allowed to continue golfing on the Masters course. The Driving Range and Academy construction works will commence shortly. Hole 1 of the World Classic course will be affected by the construction works so as to incorporate the Driving Range and hole 1 of the World Classic course. This will result in cutting down the steep hill located on the right hand side of hole 1 of the World Classic course. Hole 1 will also be shortened and played as a Par 3, where a temporary cart-path will be placed at the back of the green. With these efforts, we aspire to transform the Masters course to become one of the foremost courses in Singapore. All ongoing golf course construction and upgrading developments will be communicated regularly to all Members on the Club’s notice boards and email blasts.

MAJMUDAR’S MIZUNO MASTERCLASS A young man with designs on fashioning a career as a professional golfer emerged triumphant in the third edition of the Mizuno Laguna Junior Golf Championship. Contributed by Spencer Robinson

Ask Yash Majmudar to nominate his favourite golfing layouts and you can be sure that Laguna National’s award-winning Masters Course will feature prominently among them. The talented teenager, who hopes to carve himself a career as a touring professional, has frequently risen to the challenges laid forth by the Masters Course, winner of a host of accolades since its inception 20 years ago. And Majmudar’s remarkable string of successes at Laguna continued with a rock-solid performance in the third edition of the three-day Mizuno Laguna Junior Golf Championship. Making light of weather disruptions during the first two rounds, the 16-yearold scratch handicapper carded scores of 75, 74 and 73. With a 54-hole aggregate of six-over-par 222, Majmudar secured a notable four-stroke success in the Singapore Golf Association-sanctioned event that is title-sponsored by Mizuno and Laguna and co-sponsored by Golf House. For Majmudar, it also maintained his stunning sequence of Laguna results and underlined his undoubted potential. In the inaugural edition of the tournament

in late 2011 when he was aged 14, Majmudar carded back-to-back 74s to claim the award for best gross score in Division B. Identical scores in the 2nd Laguna National Junior Masters in June were good enough to earn him overall victory in the Boys’ section. Now, with his November masterclass, he can boast of a unique Masters Course hat-trick. Yet, in terms of scoring, the Indian citizen who is a Permanent Resident in Singapore admitted he had been aiming to fare even better. “The greens on the Masters Course were in great shape and I was hoping to be able to shoot lower scores,” said Majmudar, an ex-Canadian International School student who now has home schooling. “I’ve always enjoyed playing at Laguna and I’ve done pretty well there,” added Majmudar, who was introduced to the game at the Orchid Country Club academy when he was aged seven and is now setting his sights on playing college golf in the United States. “That is my aim,” said Majmudar, who names Swede Henrik Stenson as his favourite player. 

Club | 21

An opening 75 had left Majmudar in second place, one shot of the pace being set by Singapore Island Country Club member Kucz Mateusz. But while Mateusz struggled to an 81 on day two, Majmudar signed for a 74, despite a triple-bogey six at the devilish par-three eighth where he found a watery grave with his tee-shot. Nonetheless, Majmudar was able to take a two-stroke advantage from Taiwanese Chang Hsiu-chi into the final round. However, it was Chang who came out all guns blazing, drawing level at the top of the leaderboard after four holes and then moving ahead for the first time thanks to a birdie-four at the long sixth. But his lead was short-lived as doublebogeys at the seventh and eighth handed the initiative back to Majmudar. From that point, Majmudar was able to coast home with Chang settling for second place overall. Like Majmudar, Chloe Wong was able to call on happy past memories of the Masters Course as she swept to a runaway, wire-to-wire victory in the Girls’ competition. Girls’ Division B winner in 2011, Wong, a student at the Singapore American School, illustrated the progress she has made with her game as she left her rivals trailing in her wake. Thanks to rounds of 76, 79 and 78, the 4.3 handicap index member at Keppel Club finished five shots clear of second-placed Jacqueline Young. Defending champion Rachel Lim had to settle for third spot. Other category winners in the event that attracted a field of 75 with ages ranging from 12 to 19 were Tommy Tan (Boys’ Division B1), Andre Chong (Boys’ Division B2), Linette Chua (Girls’ Division A) and Jacqueline Young (Girls’ Division B). David Leow, Senior Manager, Singapore Representative Office, Mizuno 22 | Club

Corporation, was impressed with both the golf course conditioning… and the quality of the golf. He said: “It’s the intention of the Mizuno Laguna Junior Golf Championship to provide an opportunity for promising junior golfers from Singapore and around the region to perform in a genuinely competitive environment. In so doing, it helps them to develop as golfers – and individuals. Laguna’s Masters Course is one of the premier tournament venues in Singapore and has hosted many memorable professional tournaments. So it’s a fitting location for this event, which continues to grow in popularity. As a golf club manufacturer, Mizuno has always prided itself on the quality of its equipment, which is something our professional golfing ambassadors Luke Donald and Stacy Lewis frequently talk about. Luke and Stacy have both been playing with Mizuno clubs since their days as juniors and it’s encouraging, therefore, to see more young players using Mizuno equipment at this tournament in Singapore. It will serve them well as they continue their golfing careers.” Bradley Leahey, Laguna National’s General Manager, said: “Our club has always been a prominent supporter of junior golf development in Singapore and we’re delighted to continue that tradition with our backing of the Mizuno Laguna Junior Golf Championship. “While the players displayed a competitive edge on the course, it’s been wonderful also to see the fun that they have had and the camaraderie that has been built up among them. If this tournament is able to assist in their golfing progress and better prepare them for making the transition to the next phase of their golfing careers then we’ll be delighted.”

MEMBERS’ INTERVIEW: BLOOMBERG SQUARE MILE RELAY The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay made its debut in Singapore last October at The Promontory, Marina Bay. In this issue, we speak to two of the participating Members – Anna Helowicz (Member of Laguna National since 2006) and Geoffrey Dugan (Member of Laguna National since 2010) - who were part of Team Laguna, finishing in 86th place with a time of 1 hour and 15 minutes. Contributed by Bradley Leahey

The popular marathon relay which originated from London, United Kingdom, saw 159 teams of 10 runners, each taking on an unconventional one-mile stretch along the sidewalks, through buildings, down stairs and along the Bay before pushing for the finishing line and handing over the all-important baton to a waiting teammate.

What was the experience like running with Team Laguna? Anna: The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay was awesome. The race was so different and the atmosphere was great. The highlight for me was seeing Patrick Bowers steaming past the other competitors on the first bend. He was fast! Geoffrey: There is something exciting and motivating about competing when you know your teammates are counting on you. The team was very supportive and encouraging.

Geoffrey Dugan

Why did you choose to take part in the run? Geoffrey: I learnt of the run from my wife, who is also a avid runner. I was intrigued by the relay format, the mile distance and the Central Business District course. Unfortunately, my wife was not so lucky but she turned up to cheer us on nevertheless. 

24 | Club

Anna: I saw a poster about the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay while working out at the gym. I thought it sounded like fun and hence, entered the competition for Members. Fortunately I was one of the winners!

Anna Helowicz

Let’s talk about the running trail. Was it tough dashing through the circuit? Anna: The course had loads of tight corners and obstacles to negotiate. The main problem for me was judging how hard to run the course. I ran a marathon last August so my top-end speed is a bit lacking. Of course, like everyone else, I made the mistake of sprinting the first 100m, turning my legs to jelly in the process and totally regretting it for the remaining 1500m of the course! Geoffrey: The course was very different compared to the road and trail races I am accustomed to. I was a bit concerned about the obstacles present in a city course but when it came to race time, I actually found it very well-designed and supported by volunteers.

Have you ever taken part in other marathons or runs before? Geoffrey: I have ran one full marathon, a handful of half-marathons and many other races in the 10k category. I love to run because it is the most efficient way to maintain my fitness. I also enjoy playing ice hockey on a weekly basis with the Singapore Ice Hockey Association. Other than that, most of my running is after my two (sometimes naughty) boys. Anna: After turning a year off running in 2012 due to illness, I have spent 2013 getting back into shape gradually which involved running my first marathon in Perth last August. I have won several local races including the New Balance Real Run, Shape Women’s Run and the Salomon X-Trail run. My most recent result was being the second runner up in the Great Eastern Women’s Run 2013. What do you feel was the best part of the event? Geoffrey: What made this race great was the relay aspect. Carrying the baton and handing it to your teammate brought home the concept of being an integral part of a team Thank you to all Members who participated in our Facebook ‘Bloomberg Square Mile Relay ‘ contest. Special thanks to our other participating Members, Robert Mason and Sheldon Tan who made the run an inspiring success for all. We look forward to your participation in this year’s Bloomberg Square Mile Relay. Club | 25

PACIFIC LINKS SIGNATURE GOLF DESTINATIONS Be treated to a world of signature golf destinations in Hawaii with your Laguna National Golfing Membership. Contributed by Melissa Wright

Kapolei Golf Club Home of the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship, Kapolei is a golf journey that will test and charm the best Champions Tour player. Amateur golfers will revel in following the footsteps of great champions such as Greg Norman and Annika Sorenstam at Kapolei, which hosted the LPGA Tour’s Ladies Hawaiian Open from 1996 to 2001. Designed by architect Ted Robinson, best known for Sahalee Country Club, Kapolei is highly regarded for its magnificent beauty, floral gardens and strategic golf holes. Meandering over 190 rolling acres of a former sugar cane plantation, Kapolei’s elevated greens, 80 bunkers and 5 lakes provide delightful tactical challenges. Kapolei is highly regarded, rating 4 1/2 stars out of five on Golf Digest’s Places to Play listing and earning the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s People’s Choice Award as “Best Course on Oahu” in 2010.

Royal Hawaiian Kailua Provided with a magnificent rainforest landscape, acclaimed Dye Design has created a Hawaiian golf treasure. At Royal Hawaiian, legendary Pete Dye and his son, Perry, have integrated crafty golf holes into tumbling terrain framed by ancient jungle trees up to 100 feet tall at the foot of Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu. The back nine builds to an exciting finish as it winds through leafy corridors to fast bentgrass greens; players are presented with tantalizing risk-reward scenarios, exemplified by the 386-yard par-four 15th and the 218-yard par-3 16th. With the lush tropical surroundings and few signs of civilization, locals refer to Royal Hawaiian as Jurassic Park, and it is a hit with almost everyone who plays it. uuu

Olomana Golf Club 18 holes of spectacular vistas and tropical breezes amidst a breathtaking backdrop of the Ko’olau Mountain Range. A distinct clubhouse brings back memories of “Old Hawaii. There is a reason why Olomana Golf Links has always been a favorite course for the locals living in Oahu. It is the course that helped launch one of the hottest names in golf these days - 13 year-old phenom, Michelle Wie. This 18 hole par 72 daily fee course will test the skills of both the seasoned and amateur player alike with its most formidable characteristic - two distinctly different nines. You will have fun testing your shot strategies, while managing the water hazards on every hole of the front nine. The wind, rolling hills, elevation changes and bunkers on the back nine provides a challenge to an entirely different set of skills for a successful round. Either way, the prevailing trade winds play a major factor in scoring well, a nice touch for any course. Even if your game is off, you can at least admire the scenery in peace and quiet of this popular course. Warm up your swing before the game from one of the 40 tees available at the double decker driving range - your choice of shade or sun.

Makaha Valley CC (East) Nestled in captivating lowlands, Makaha Valley Country Club provides the other half of the one-two punch in this beautiful tourist region. Adjacent to Makaha Golf Club (West), Makaha Valley was designed by William F. Bell, who designed the Torrey Pines South Course which hosted the 2008 U.S. Open. Accented by gorgeous vistas, Makaha Valley weaves along rolling terrain framed by dense trees, ferns and tropical plants. Presenting golfers with a variety of doglegs and elevation changes, the course builds to an entertaining climax on one of Hawaii's most demanding closing holes.

Makaha Golf Club Waianae (West) To take full advantage of the beauty and tranquility of Makaha Valley and the Waianae Mountains, Pacific Links has engaged Greg Norman to remake Makaha West into an unforgettable championship course. Featuring a breathtaking mountain backdrop and beauty of the Oahu's pristine western shore, this natural canvas will be transformed into an exciting course that can host the world's best players. From multiple high vantage points, Makaha also provides spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean where whales can sometimes be seen breaching. When the Shark puts his finishing touches on Makaha in 2014, the course will deliver a Hawaiian golf experience as incredible as the scenery.

McLaren has pioneered the use of carbon fibre in vehicle production over the past 30 years. The material was mainly used in aerospace applications then and not only did it revolutionise racing car construction, it brought new levels of rigidity and driver safety. Since introducing a carbon chassis into racing and road cars with the 1981 McLaren MP4/1 and 1993 McLaren F1 respectively, McLaren has not built a car without a carbon fibre chassis. Following the global launch in 2010, the British manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports cars has launched the 12C in 2011, 12C Spider in 2012, and keeping with its plan to introduce a new model every year, unveiled the McLaren P1TM in 2013. These cars break new ground in driving dynamics, automotive technology, and performance, but their future success lies in the roots of a company steeped in a rich motorsport history. On 2nd September 2013, McLaren celebrated its 50th Anniversary Year. Following the mantra of its founder, Bruce McLaren, life for the British sports car manufacturer is measured in “achievement, not in years alone. As a fitting tribute, the latest addition of McLaren Auckland, as its 50th global retailer, sees the Brand returning to the birthplace of Bruce McLaren continues to expand, operating through a dedicated global network of retailers in almost every major automotive market.

Golf Appreciation Day It was a morning to remember; the lightning warning siren wailing loudly with overcast skies and chilly winds sweeping across the greens. The cold and wet morning was in the least bit welcoming for a game of golf. But for the 35 golfers who have been representing Laguna National in the past 6 months at the SGA Interclub League, nothing stood in their way of a great play and fostering of friendships. To thank these members for their dedication, Laguna National Golfing Department had organized the Laguna SGA Interclub League Appreciation Game with a 18-hole play on the World Classic course where Donovan Sia and his comrades claimed victory with a combined score of 128.
