You have had many helmet designs throughout your career; which is your favourite? There is no one favourite helmet design as I have special memories with all of them. They remind me of the different phases in my career such as, my first win with Toro Rosso in Monza, my three Championship wins and so forth. However, I do have a penchant for like the helmets I have had for Japan just for their design. What is your favourite Singapore cuisine? I have not had the chance to explore Singapore cuisine properly as yet! We tend to stay on European time when we race, so all of the restaurants are usually closed by the time we leave the circuit. However, I have tried Nasi Goreng and really enjoyed it. I would like to explore Singapore cuisine more when I am there this year.

Having raced here a few times now, what is the one thing you love the most about our sunny island? The circuit – it is what I love the most and it brings me back every year. You have been having excellent results in SIngapore, 2008-5th, 2009-4th, 2010-2nd and won in 2011 and 2012, 3 podiums in the last 3 years with 2 wins. This is an outstanding performance. Do you have a special secret? Do you think you can win again in this coming Singapore GP? For sure I hope to win, like every racing driver hopes to win every race he takes part in but there is never any guarantee. There is no special secret – just hard work, focus and determination.

in Formula One in history across borders, be it in Formula One or rallying. You will always have something new to worry about, to fight for and at the end of the day, I am not waking up thinking “Ah… great, I have won the championship. I am the best.” I respect my competitors too much to be thinking about something like that. Your fan base has been growing at a tremendous rate in Singapore. Do you have a message for them? It is very nice to see so many fans around the track, waving the German flag. Please keep crossing your fingers for Infiniti Red Bull Racing and support us not only in Singapore but at every race. That support is what spurs us on and makes us want to push harder. Thank you!

Do you think you are the best driver? No I do not think like that and I am not trying to find an answer to who is the best driver

Prudential Causeway Trophy at Laguna National 2013 The first ever Prudential Causeway Trophy at Laguna National professional match play tournament was a welcoming event that not only encouraged the emergence of more homegrown professionals from both Singapore and Malaysia but also provided an opportunity for the two perennial sporting rivals to pit their strengths and wits against each other.

Team Malaysia And Team Singapore

The three-day match play competition took place on the intricately designed World Classic from 7 to 9 June, comprising 12 top players from both participating teams, namely the Singapore Professional Golf Association (SPGA) and the Professional Golf Association Malaysia (PGAM). Arguably one of the toughest courses in Asia, the World Classic was designed with the intention of hosting world class professional tournaments that would showcase the unique quality and challenging nature of the course. The excitement and energy surrounding this inaugural professional

tournament generated much buzz around the club as we approached the date of the tournament. A spectacle of this magnitude was indeed a proud moment for Laguna National. Laguna National has always been an ardent supporter of both the local and Asian golf scene, especially with the emergence of young golf talents who are set to shape the future of the regional golf scene. It was also with this belief that Laguna National, together with Parallel Media Group, Prudential Singapore and other co-sponsors, collaborated to create this new tournament

for young golf talents such as Quincy Quek and Lam Zhiqun to nurture and improve their game, and provide the inspiration for other budding talents. Apart from integrating grassroots volunteers and junior players with the pros, the other key objective for the tournament was to enhance the profile of golf in the region with the publicity and exposure generated by the tournament. In addition, the three-day event featured complimentary entry tickets to both the public and Laguna National Members to attend.

PLAY

Day 1 Despite having the home ground advantage for the tournament, Team Singapore were the underdogs. “Team Malaysia comprises full-time players, while Team Singapore is made up of eight touring professionals and four teaching professionals… so a win would be a good boost to the team already. It would have shown how much our standards have scaled,” - Lam Zhiqun, Team Singapore

The tournament began on a sunny Friday morning and was structured as six foursome matches for the first day of play. The cunning player pairings by Team Singapore’s Captain Lip Ooi, combined with the eagerness of the players resulted in a solid 4-2 lead for Singapore over Malaysia heading into day two. Highlights for Team Singapore on Friday included the overwhelming success of Singaporean golfers Lam Zhiqun and Lam Chih Bing outplaying Malaysian golfers Danny Chia and Rizal Amin, winning their critical match 4 and 3. The achievements of other Singaporean golfers include Chang Ren Chiat’s and Choo Tze Huang’s victories over Malaysian golfers Nicholas Fung and Anis Helmi 3 and 2, as well as Quincy Quek’s and Marc Kawasoe’s triumphs against Nachimuthu Ramasamy and Shaaban Hussin by 2.

Day 2 There was reserved confidence within Team Singapore as a result of winning Day 1. Day 2 started with an early morning tee-off and

unfortunately, the absence of Singapore golfer Mitchell Slorach (who suffered a wrist injury and consequently withdrew on Day 1) resulted in the scheduled match being halved owing to good sportsmanship on both sides. Only five matches teed off on Day 2, with the tournament structure revised to comprise five fourball matches and incorporate the halved match. Team Malaysia won the first nine holes, however, in the next nine holes Team Singapore stepped up their game with three out of its five teams winning their matches.

“This win is a proud moment for all of us in Singapore. We fought really hard out there and I want to thank my team for making this a day to remember. Team Malaysia has put up a strong challenge but we showed that we can be up for it,” – Lip Ooi, Captain of Team Singapore Intense play was seen in the close match between Singapore golfers, Poh Eng Wah and Vincent Khua against Team Malaysia’s Danny Chia and Rizal Amin. Poh and Khua were trailing Chia and Amin until the 13th hole, where they squared the match and won by one hole courtesy of Poh’s birdie on the 17th. The day ended with Team Singapore still in the lead with the overall score of 7 ½ to 4 ½.

Final day The last day of the tournament was set up as 12 head to head singles matches, mimicking the final day of the Ryder Cup Matches. Team Singapore, who needed only five more points to secure the trophy, had a strong lead over Malaysia at this point. It was Lam Chih Bing who won the final point needed to seal the win against Malaysian Anis Helmi 2 and 1. The final score ended as 15 ½ to 8 ½ for Team Singapore. The World Classic Course proved a significant challenge to the players as expected. It was set up to play at 7100 yards and the greens at around 10 on the stimpmeter. The goal was to provide challenging playing conditions but taking into account the touring experience of the professionals. The results were very few, if any total scores recorded under par, although selective pin placements and certain holes surrendered birdies and eagles when played aggressively by the pros. The World Classic withstood the onslaught and then some by defending her par with honour and in some cases very fierce comebacks. The Prudential Causeway Trophy will be held at Laguna National annually until 2015.

Immense support for Team Singapore was displayed by spectators who were savouring every moment of this inaugural event and following the players by foot along the extensive, and at times steep, trails of the course under the blazing hot sun.

Interview with Laguna Touring Pro, Lam Chih Bing A Singaporean professional golfer who was once a high-flying fund manager before he embarked on his illustrious amateur career, turning pro in 1999. For this 37-yearold, it was never a doubt that golf would be his career. At the British Open at Royal Birkdale, Lam Chih Bing entered the history books as the first Singaporean to make the cut in a Major. In the recent Panasonic India Open, Lam Chih Bing took the third spot with an even-par 72 for a 281 total. What is your most memorable experience at Laguna? I think two memories stand out for me. The first one was winning the Accenture Champion of Champions event that was held on the Classic Golf Course back in 2003. It was my first tournament victory in Singapore. The other was breaking par at the World Classic for the first time during the Home-Fix World Classic 2013 Championship in April this year, after almost fifteen attempts! Which is your preferred golf course - Masters or World Classic? I really enjoy playing on both courses but I would have to lean a little bit more towards the World Classic. I think that particular golf course offers golfers a challenge which cannot be found anywhere else in Asia. What was your first impression when you played on the World Classic? This is the toughest course I have ever played - by a long way!

What do you think is the most important aspect in having good golf skills? How do you train? I think the most important aspect to being a good golfer is having a repeatable golf swing and a killer short game! A typical training session for me would be hitting 200 balls at the range in the morning, trying to groove the swing, followed by one hour at the chipping green, practising various chips and pitches. My training concludes with a 45 minutes session on the putting green and playing nine holes in the evening. Any advice for aspiring Singaporean golfers who are trying to turn pro? Spend more time on the short game. Work on the mental side of golf. And most importantly, enjoy the game. Where else would you be if not on the golf course? Skiing and diving!

Favorite food at the Club? It has got to be Yakiniku at Yakiniku Ten.

Member’s Interview: Neurofeedback Increasingly used by leaders and athletes, including American professional golfer Phil Mickelson, Neurofeedback enhances one’s ability to improve their ‘mental game’ of golf, while promoting the self-regulation of brain activity for healthier functioning. Behind this Neurofeedback programme is Dennis Lee, Member of Laguna National since 1997.

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that measures brain waves to produce a signal that can be used as feedback on brain activity to teach self-regulation. This holistic therapy is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a 100% drug-free stress reliever, an effective intervention for a range of brain-related conditions. So what made Dennis decide to embark on Neurofeedback? “There was a point in time where I felt my memory was starting to deteriorate and I just had to do something about it,” shared Dennis who then started his research on Neurofeedback and has not looked back since. “Today, being able to help my clients achieve their goals gives me a sense of fulfilment.”

30

LAGUNA LIFESTYLE | JULY – SEPTEMBER 2013

“Having gone through the Neurofeedback programme, I have greater concentration when golfing now, especially in tournaments. My putting has improved, as I am more confident in reading the greens and not over think the putt. I am also able to focus more easily after a bad shot than I did before. My concentration level for school has also increased!” – Laguna Junior Member Andrew Alcott, uses Neurofeedback to enhance his golf skills and concentration in school.

Neurofeedback is frequently used by hundreds of clinical practitioners worldwide to help clients with various brain-related conditions. Research and clinical studies have shown Neurofeedback to be effective in helping with anxiety, autism, depression, epilepsy, headaches, insomnia and even brain damage from stroke. With Neurofeedback, the brain is trained to make use of its natural ability to regulate itself. To begin the Neurofeedback process, candidates will be seated in a chair, facing a computer screen with sensors attached to both the ears and scalp, to measure brain waves. Slow, meditative music will be played to soothe oneself while undergoing the programme. People who experience constant headaches, migraines, depression or have the slightest concern about the side effects of medication make great candidates for the Neurofeedback programme. Dennis advises to think of the Neurofeedback programme as a personal training routine except that it would be “personal training for the brain” as he puts it. There is no hard and fast rule about a fixed number of sessions one should go through. “We are training the brain and everyone’s brain is unique. However, as the benefits of training accrue over sessions, a minimum of 12 to 15 sessions is recommended”. THE LAGUNA NATIONAL GOLFERS REHAB PROGRAMME

The Laguna National Golf & Country Club Golfer Rehabilitation And Injury Prevention Programme is a joined initiative between the personal trainers and golf professionals. The concept of this programme is to address flexibility concerns and muscle issues to improve your overall golf enjoyment. The golf swing is a quick, jerky and unorthodox movement that combines flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, swing mechanics and endurance. All in less than a second. Not to mention the mental strain that comes along with it. Most golfers tend to just concentrate on the club in their hands and that little ball on the ground. More attention should be paid to the most important piece of “equipment” in the golf swing - your body. Believe it or not, as with a “rusty” golf swing, a “rusty” body can always be improved too. A good golf swing depends on the body’s attempt to swing the golf club consistently, alongside accuracy and speed. The five core functions of golf fitness are flexibility, strength, endurance, balance, and motor control. As you can see, this is difficult to achieve as these functions involve your whole body, from your neck all the way down to your ankle and your big toe. All these functions have to work in synchronisation in less time than it takes to sneeze. Tour players work out every day. Many do light workouts even on days they have a tournament as it acts as an injury deterrent. Realistically speaking, training for injury prevention and rehabilitation should take place at least 2 to 3 days per week for golfers. It is said that golf is the top physical activity for individuals over 50, unfortunately, it is also the time in our lives when injuries take place more often than we would like. Injuries could take place during a simple warm up routine or even lifting the clubs out of the car boot. Along with the popularity of the sport, comes not only the risk of injuries related to golf, but the reality that 50% of golfers will sustain at least one injury that is directly related to their game - golfers elbow, knee twists, back strains, just to name a few. The objective of this programme is to prevent and heal injuries, while counteracting recurring injuries in golfers whom may or have been forced to quit the game they love as a result. Enhance your game as you improve and maintain your physical fitness. This programme is suitable for both serious and once-a-week golfers.

We are hoping that with the combination of fitness and rehabilitation training with our gym instructors, as well as the correct golf swing techniques from our PGA Professionals, you can achieve some, if not all of our goals: • More powerful and consistent golf swings • Strengthening of worn joints • Improvement in range of motion which leads to increased distance and club head speed • Heightened enjoyment of walking the golf course with less fatigue and with increased focus • Improved recovery time which equates to more rounds of golf For more information on the programme, please refer to the Social and Recreation Events section in this issue.

In support of the local golfing scene, this tournament saw many of today’s top golfers - Quincy Quek, Mardan Marmat, Poh Eng Soon, Kenji Cheung and Laguna Touring Pro Lam Chih Bing - competing on Asia’s toughest course. A good “warm up” match leading up to the Causeway Trophy in June, the event has its fair share of excitement and close calls. After the dust settled, Quincy Quek emerged victorious, coming from behind to beat Lam Chih Bing by 2 strokes with a solid birdie on the final hole.

The Laguna National’s World Classic World Class and Multiple Tasks As I drive out in buggy 55, To the 1st Tee and filled with glee, A ball in hand and the other with a Tee, Oh boy! Am I still alive? The waves of mounds as the moon’s terrain, Am gonna hit this track and hope to not pop a vein, The green I found next to a crater, A long story is what this course will give yer. Expect a par there will be few, Right now, I wanna be at the club with my beef stew, But Ahh! Finally a par 5 fourth, yay, A birdie I seek just to spark some thunder, A fully hit pitch spins back into the hay, Oh crap! Oh s***! What a freaking blunder. A drive of 300 at the 9th so perfect, Hmm! I guess there won’t be so much effect, An exquisite iron struck to the green’s heart, What the! The ball’s rolled into the hazard before I could spell fart. On the back 9 my hopes are up, Am thinking of less ways to screw up, Yes, finally the reachable twelfth, Decided to hit it low like a fighter stealth, Damn! I didn’t carry the bunker, Now I’m really in a freaking funker. Oh have I made the right decision, On a hole that needs such intense precision, On 17th I had to go with my gut, That’s when I really got a hurt butt. The score is bleak at 25 over par I sit, For next year I will have to get super fit, And I’ve got to re-check my corrective Lasik, To come back and conquer The World Classic!!!

A tongue-in-cheek take on the World Classic by CM Chong, Captain of Team Malaysia. “The World Classic is one of the best I’ve ever played. This should be on everyone’s bucket list!” said CM.

The Future Of Laguna National

In a series of upcoming articles and communication pieces, we are delighted to share with you the future plans for Laguna National Golf & Country Club and its positive impact on Membership and Membership Privileges at the Club. In this edition, we share with you the development and construction of the world class hotel and resort amenities which will soon become part of the Laguna property.

Laguna National is surrounded by the rich heritage that runs through the heart of golf. The trends that will shape the future of golf and hospitality are the same trends that are shaping and boosting the future of Laguna National today: the shift towards Asia, urbanisation, spread of digital technology and sustainability pressures. We welcome our Members to join us as we take a glimpse into the future of the Club from now through the anticipated grand opening in January 2016 where a brand new, exclusive Laguna National Golf and Country Club will be unveiled progressively. Golfing and lifestyle living gets contemporary with world class, state-of-the-art facilities to deliver a multi-sensory experience. Exclusively for our Members and through Dusit’s Gold Club Membership, our Members will receive significant privileges in addition to delighting the palate from Royal Thai to Michelin Star inspirations, alongside privileged

access to both world class resort golf and accommodation facilities. Foremost in our minds in addition to creating a new and upgraded club for our Members, we have also ensured that all Members will receive at least a 15% discount in all the Food & Beverage outlets planned for the resort, all Spa services and hotel rooms (and an even lower Corporate room rate if this is lower than the 15% discount afforded to Members). Furthermore, Members in the Heritage and 2040 Membership categories will be immediately afforded Dusit Gold Club status at the Thonburi Level (or similar in the renamed programme) providing even greater privileges.

Collaboration With Dusit International The launch of the Dusit Thani branded hotel and resort at Laguna will see the incorporation of an exceptional hospitality experience that reflects the vision of Dusit International through its unique artistry and characteristics indigenous to modern day Thailand.

Design Concept - Hotel & Golf Clubhouse Arrival

Located across Asia and the Middle East, Dusit has continued to capture the hearts of all travellers from across the world. All Dusit hotels and resorts are thoughtfully put together to ensure that the promise to create the experience of Heaven on Earth is delivered second to none. Its exceptional infrastructure, intelligently assembled facilities and dedicated services to ensure the ultimate comfort of today’s world travellers are laudable. Today, Dusit has led the Thai hospitality to become one of the world’s most admired and respected hotel group, encompassing five distinguished brands; Dusit Thani,

Dusit Devarana, dusitD2, Dusit Princess, and Dusit Residence.

Construction Of The Golf Hotel And Country Club Resort The official signing ceremony with Dusit International took place in June 2013 which finalises Dusit Thani as the hospitality partner for the upcoming hotel within the Club premises. The renovation of the Club is targeted to commence by end of 2013 and includes the construction of a full service Dusit Thani branded hotel and resort at Laguna which comprises 206 hotel rooms with 8 golfer villas and a refurbished avant-garde Golfer’s Clubhouse.

In order to facilitate the remodelling of the Club, the construction of the hotel will require the demolition and rebuilding of the Social and Recreation wing, as well as the existing driving range. It is anticipated the total demolition and construction will take approximately 24 months. While some facilities will be unavailable during this period, upon completion of the new resort all Members can look forward to a brand new swimming complex, fitness club, multipurpose recreational room, spa and a new Members-only driving range, along with a short game practice area.
