THE ULTIMATE DESIGN FOR MODERN LIVING

FIVE POINTS OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE By Leslie Vinton

MODERN ARCHITECTURE came into being outside of Paris in the small town of Poissy, Yvelines France in the 1920s, influenced by the most famous architects of all time, Pierre Le Corbusier, and his home Villa Savoye. The Villa Savoye was built in Poissy and is considered the best work of the architect and defined the course of modern architecture in the twentieth century. To expand upon our favorite modern home décor online shopping spot, Dot & Bo’s Great Foundations series, we have decided to delve a little deeper into modern architecture’s beginnings. Early on, the modern designs surpassed traditional codes of residential architecture of the time and continue to lead in design, form and light. Most of us modern architucture enthusiasiasts are so glad about this! The Five Points of Modern Architecture can bascially be summed up in the structural breakthroughs made in the breathtaking Villa Savoye. The Villa is the place where Le Corbusier’s basic architectural tenets were established with the pilotis, or ground-level supporting columns, which elevate the entire home off the ground, a flat roof design to reclaim the space for a rooftop garden, and a free floor plan designed to catch rays of natural light and flow through the home. The elimination of load-bearing walls were part of the open design plan along with horizontal windows for even light elimination, venti lation and freely designed facade free of

structural members. The home essentially hovers off the ground. The design intention was to cause as little disturbance to the neighboring natural surroundings, which allows the home to end up looking like an artistic masterpiece among the heavy green surroundings and lush grassy slopes. The attention to detail can be felt and experienced when touring the home, which is open to tour most of the year. On your next trip to Paris it is a definite must see! Le Corbusier invested a great deal of time considering how many people would live in the house. The interior design allows for movement throughout the space as they experience the harmony between the architect tural form and the inflowing natural light.

Avoid soft hues palettes or pastel prints as these hughes become lost in the surroundings. Bright, vibrant color or geometric patterns play up the space and add interesting design elements.

Mid-Century Modern Chairs

Form meets function in these chairs designed with clean lines, natural forms and modern style.

Current modern architecture has expanded upon the free-flowing design and use of light, offering architects and designers freedom to explore with materials such as concrete and space features like open floor plans, large windows, and multi-use gardens.

10 Modern DĂŠcor Statement Pieces When decorating your home to take on hints of modern architecture, mix statement pieces such as mid-century modern furniture with modern details such as an open-structured glass tables. Heavy wood pieces such as an over-sized dining table with clean lines and minimal details add another design touch. Add instant interest to any space with modern accent pieces such as low tables, bookshelves designed with reclaimed woods, throw pillows and accessories. Geometric patterns and bold prints are decorating staples in modern decorating. Toss pillows in gray and white patterns with bright, vibrant shades of yellow, green, or red. Blue, orange, and gray are also colors to play up the space. Color accents the structural elements of a modern home, such as cement flooring, the streamlined aesthetics of white or gray walls, and over-sized windows.

16  ADVENTURE HISTORY OF THE JAMBOREE

E

very summer, country music festival goers battle the crowds and soak in the sun, hoping to get near the stage to see their favorite performers up-close. The best of the best in Country Music join together to put on the show of the season. From industry legends like Tim McGraw, to country superstars like Jack Owen and Miranda Lambert, fans of all generations join together to sway in-tune, let loose, and unwind All-American style. This year, The Oregon Jamboree hosted The Big 22, the 22nd annual Oregon Jamboree in Sweet Home, Oregon. It was a sweet weekend packed with a dynamic lineup and fun for the whole family.

The Oregon Jamboree is the Northwest’s premier country music festival with plans of next year’s event already in the making. As the Jamboree heads into its 23rd year, headliners like Keith Urban are lined up to perform. Taking place on July 31 - August 2nd, the excitement is planned for days with two stages, three beer and wine gardens, merchandise, concession booths, and a Kid’s Zone! The three jumbo screens throughout the venue also make every seat feel like a front row seat. Music lovers can stay right nearby and close to all the action by camping-out at one of the many RV and camping locations. Tickets and Camping for the 2015 Oregon Jamboree are available by calling the box office at 1-888-613-6812, M-F, 9am to 5pm Get more info at www.OregonJamboree.com

With twenty-two years under its belt, the Oregon Jamboree has earned a reputation to being the Northwest’s top festival. Nestled in the foothills of the scenic Cascade Mountains, the festival is as scenic as it is entertaining. Held on a 20+ acre park-like setting that includes the historic Weddle Covered Bridge, the setting is as idyllic as it’s historic past. The Jamboree offers a full festival atmosphere in the main venue, and a more intimate concert experience on the second stage in Sankey Park. Over nine hundred festival volunteers contribute their efforts to ensure a safe and fun experience for concert go-ers. The Oregon Jamboree was founded in 1992 as an economic development project for the community of Sweet Home. Oregon Jamboree founders, Marge Geil and Leslie Ancke had a passion for community service, and a love for country music. Their vision was a three-day country music, camping, and fundraising event. Marge and Leslie pursued their dream with conviction, traveling to see Wynonna Judd concerts and asking for her help. Unlikely as it seemed at the time, a deal was struck and Wynonna agreed to play at the 1992 and 1993 concerts, making their dream of The Oregon Jamboree a reality. The Jamboree is produced by the non-profit, Sweet Home Economic Development Group. All proceeds are used to benefit economic and community development projects in the Sweet Home community, and over a million dollars has been raised in the past twenty-two years. The 2014 Oregon Jamboree was an enormous success. Attendance is estimated to have reached 17,500 on Friday, 18,000 on Saturday, and 15,500 on Sunday and 100% of the 3,500 multi-person campsites were occupied. The concert featured performances by country music headliners Miranda Lambert, Jake Owen, Tim McGraw, Billy Currington and many more. The response from patrons, sponsors, and vendors has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The Oregon Jamboree was unforgettable! I loved listening to so many great artists on the outdoor stage with country fans of all ages! The whole event was very organized and the staff and volunteers were nice and helpful. Can’t wait to go back!” - Kim from Bend, OR “There is nothing like traveling with the entire family to take in music the whole family can enjoy!” - Alicia from Silverton, OR. “It’s like a giant outdoor family BBQ with live music from our favorite country music stars! There is nothing like it.” - Diane from Portland, OR “A group of my friends from OSU in Corvallis traveled over for the weekend. It was a blast!” - Alicia from Corvallis, Oregon

The album’s first single, “Little Bit of Everything” took the top spot on the Country Singles Chart, as did “We Were Us”, featuring Miranda Lambert, which gave Urban a streak of five consecutive #1 songs (dating back to 2011’s “Without You”). Urban’s reputation as a premier songwriter, vocalist, musician and virtuoso guitarist has allowed him opportunities to collaborate with the likes of The Rolling Stones, John Mayer, Steven Tyler, John Fogerty, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift, Vince Gill, Eric Church and countless others. t doesn’t take long after meeting country singer-songwriter Austin Webb to realize that he is a passionate and unique country music performer. He is handsome, with a rock edge and a swagger a bit like Harry Connick Jr. And his southern drawl is definitely sexy, ladies! Watching Webb perform will make you want to get up and dance. The performance is refreshing and way too much fun. Hits like “Raise ‘Em Up” are the perfect blend between classic country twang, pop harmony, and a unique rock edge. He draws in the crowd to have a good time. His singing voice is raspy and soulful. A great blend for traditional country with a new sound.

Webb is an up-and-coming country artist whose music combines the genres of country and soul. These two genres are evident as he performs. His ballad, “Slip on By”, is heartfelt and soulful. It’s the kind of song that draws us in to stop, take a moment and reflect-- The lyrics remind us of what’s important in life- to appreciate every moment. The stirring lyrics leading into the second chorus grab at the heart strings, “It ain’t easy always looking back, but it seems these days that it’s all I have. And what hurts me the most is knowing what could have been.” Webb sings the second chorus with soulful passion. “Hear the sound of my little boy saying, Daddy can you come play with me? But I was too busy. Then one day my baby grew up and went to war, I never thought he’d be gone in the blink of an eye. Don’t let it slip on, don’t let it slip on, don’t let it slip on by.” Webb grew up in Williamston, S.C. listening to Mowtown, R&B, rock, and retro-country from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. He loved authors like Oscar Wilde, O Henry, Walt Whitman and Dylan Thomas. As a budding poet at age 16, his writing poetic ability came through his singing when he picked up a guitar for the first time.

24  ADVENTURE His journey to the job hasn’t come easy. He bagan playing in Atlanta, GA, working odd jobs (he worked 25 different odd jobs in his pursuit to become a star), including working at a BMW plant. “I’ve always had to work hard for everything… nothing was ever handed to me. My family is not very rich, they’re just regular people, so I had to do a lot of things for myself, and so I’ve always had a pretty good work ethic.” His first trip to Nashville was spontaneous, influenced by a bad breakup. In the moment, he turned his car around and headed to Music City, driving all night. He took time to stop, pay tribute and play a few songs on his guitar at the grave of Johnny Cash, which turned out to be an eventful moment. “I was driving in the middle of the night from my small town in South Carolina and I drove to Hendersonville, Tennessee, where Johnny Cash is buried,” Webb begins. “I went to his grave about 4 o’clock in the morning. I sat there smoking cigarette after cigarette playing guitar for about an hour and I felt something that changed — that put me in the right direction.” After his trip to Nashville, Webb went on to win a songwriting competition, the Nashville Connection. He then moved to Nashville and was offered a publishing deal from Grammy award-wining producer, Byron Gallimore of Streamsound Records. Streamsound records is the Nashville-based label, founded by Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sugarland), veteran industry execs Jim Wilkes and Tim McHugh. Webb is letting fans get to know him a little more intimately through his ‘Follow’ mini-series. During the first episode, he shares the story about what brought him to Nashville and gets a little goofy. Webb discusses what he thinks makes a good song, and why he sings country music. “The best songs that are written are the ones you can see and then on top of that the ones you can feel,” he says adding, “I sing country songs, but I think there’s a lot of soul in it. There’s a lot of passion that I believe comes across.” Webb’s ‘Follow’ series on AXS-TV every Sunday at 11:30AM ET.

Q/

A

What was the inspiration or motivator that influenced you to become a country music singer-songwriter? Kris Kristofferson is my biggest influence as a songwriter and Elvis is my biggest influence as a performer. I was born country, I couldn’t help it. What two qualities describe you as an artist? Passion and soulful. What would surprise us about you? I used to wear new socks every single day. Where do you hang your hat when not on the road? I live in Nashville, TN. What is your favorite decorating style? Do you decorate yourself? I get most of my stuff from thrift stores and yard sales. I like the Southwestern/Northwestern Native American style of art and décor.

25  ADVENTURE

Q/

A

Do you have a favorite piece of furniture in your home? My favorite piece of furniture is my table for vinyl records in my reading room. Do you cook? I like to cook. I don’t really have recipes, but I use a lot of Mrs.Dash seasoning! We know that life on the road can be a challenge: Do you have a personal ritual or routine that keeps you motivated and balanced? It’s different each week. The word “balance” can’t even come close to describing how weird it is to manage. It can be exhausting. For instance, I’m writing from my home in Nashville, TN at 4PM. I woke up at 5 AM this morning in Grand Rapids, MI. You’re either born to travel, or not. I keep thinking I was born to do it. What does a typical day look like for you? There’s no such thing. Hah, every day is totally different. Only thing the same is the music. How do you and your band overcome the obstacles faced at this stage in your career? Do you work well together? Yes, we all work together very hard. My band works hard for me and I do the same for them. My main goal at this stage in my career is to be invited back. We clean up our green rooms, be courteous and just generally easy to work with. That’s the best thing I believe any artist can do.

What is your favorite movie of all time? The Shawshank Redemption. What type of artist do you aspire to be? I aspire to stay happy, be honest and true to myself, as I am today. Is there one thing that you didn’t expect or has surprised you about becoming a singer-songwriter and performer of country music? Nothing has really surprised me. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The industry is exactly like you’d assume. Do you have a favorite musician that inspires you? My favorite musicians are street performers playing for tips. Do you remain close with your family? I really try to. I travel a lot and it’s sad not being able to spend time with them as much as I’d like, but I’m hoping to spend more time, as much as I can.

Country Girls kicking up their boots at the The Oregon Jamboree

It all started on a Friday morning in August, just before the Oregon Jamboree. We took off to our first country music festival. Four country girls who had never been to a Country Music Festival before. We definitely didn’t know what to expect. We were picked to be the four lucky ladies of a creative project with LaFleur Magazine. Full of butterflies and excitement, we all drove separately from our home towns to meet at the location of The Oregon Jamboree to learn for the first time what the fun weekend would have in store for us. We all felt a little nervous and excited about what the weekend would be like. After arriving to the campground, we were greeted by a brand new Airstream to spend the weekend glamping in true country girl style thanks to fellow country girls from Sweet Home, OR and Airstream Adventures NW. Although we had not attended a country music festival before, we all love country music and are each a country girl at heart and dressed up in true cowgirl style thanks to Cowgirl Cash for the amazing vintage boots! Spending the weekend in the luxury of a new Airstream in as true country queens was a really fun experience. We were stocked up on amazing Oregon wines provided by Willamette Valley Vineyards and incredible Oregon hard cider in flavors like black cherry (yum) from Atlas Cider Company. Special cakes, individual desserts, and cute little tarts were set out for us to feast on made by the amazingly talented Foxtail Bake Shop. There were even mini berry pie pops! It was a glamour camping experience. (Something we would highly recommend!) WWW.LAFLEURMAGAZINE.COM

Not Just An Ordinary Weekend

Country Girl - Quincy Shepard - Mate

We spent all Friday morning getting ready for the big weekend. We had hair and makeup done, got all dressed up, and even showered in town (at the local gym) like all the other festival goers. It was crazy and exciting! The whole town seems to take on festival fever with local businesses catering to the crowd in genuine hospitality. Even the crazy-busy barista at Starbucks was friendly and chatting about the festival. It felt like old-fashioned community; people joined together in one big festive party. Heading into the late morning on Friday, we could feel the anticipation building. The excitement was tangible as the crowd started to gather and flocks of volunteers arrived (traveling from all over) to serve at the event. The entire place was very organized and well-planned out. There were awesome food booths, miles of porta-potties, and happy, smiling faces in every direction. The entire place was in a festival mood. As early afternoon came, we could hear musicians tuning their instruments and singers warming up their voices. I don’t think any of us have heard so many check, check, checks

and funny, high-pitched squeals before. Our camp spot was situated right in front of stage two. We literally had a perfect view of the performances right from our Airstream. (Not that we stayed there with front row, center stage on our minds!) Shortly after arriving, we learned that we were going to meet country singer-songwriter, Austin Webb. He is an up-and-coming Country Music performer that has an amazing singing voice and stage presence. He is so handsome too! Wow, the whole moment was so exciting, we had to pinch ourselves. We headed out for our first big moment, to a scenic location just outside of Sweet Home, for special photo shoot. Little did we know what would be in store for us.

Country girls Kari Clark, Quincy Shepard-Mate, Kyrie Gymon and Austin Webb walking on locaiton in Sweet Home, Oregon.

After arriving on location, we were led to a grove of trees just up the road. That is where we met country music star, Austin Webb. It was surreal. We immediately hit it off with him, as he is very down-to-earth, and has a great sense of humor. We walked down the dirt road adjacent to the gorgeous tree-lined fields, chatting about the upcoming weekend and getting to know Austin better. (As the photographer was snapping shot after shot, which was a little unnerving, but really fun.) You would think a photo shoot like this would have that awkward tension, because you don’t know each other, but he made it very easy to just have fun and go with it! We were then taken to a sloping, tree-covered area further inside the scenic grounds, which surround a very friendly family’s home. The family allowed us access to their home for the photo shoots, which was so hospitable. Their hospitality was another really positive experience that shows the type of genuineness we experienced over the weekend. So many people joined together to make this whole experience come true for us.

We took photos with Austin Webb in a few locations throughout the shoot as he shared about his life on the road thus far, the inspirations behind his music, his tattoos, (he has a lot and they all have special meaning, like the one on his right arm - it’s a list of all his favorite Country songs). We ended up in a grassy field area that sets adjacent to a wheat feild, which had just been mowed the day before, otherwise would have been amazing for photos! There were fields of wildflowers just over the hill from us. It was the kind of location that takes your breath away and the perfect place for listening to soft, soulful country music. It was very quiet and you could actually hear the birds sing (except for our little groupwe were all really excited-so there was plenty of gigling and sillyness going on). This was the location where we got to listen to him play. We sat on a blanket just at sunset. We listened to him sing and play guitar. What a moment! Stunning scenery, breathtaking fields, groves of trees, the peace-and-quiet of the countryside, a handsome coutry star, and amazing music being played just for us! It was the kind of moment that dreams are made of! Sweet and romantic. A moment none of us will forget. After our photo shoot with Austin Webb, we were able to watch him perform on stage. His songs are really fun, upbeat, and soulful. We took plenty of pictures and got a few selfies with him. (He even added us on Instagram!) The whole experience was amazing. Later, Friday evening, we attended the concert with Miranda Lambert on the main stage, which is located at the high school. She is an amazing performer with a big voice and a fun, spunky stage presence. It was really fun to watch her live. She was a great introduction to our first evening concert at a Country Music Festival. The main stage area is very scenic and open with grassy ground cover and a historic white bridge that adds a ton of character and makes the whole place feel special. On Saturday, we started the day off listening to Cassadee Pope, who is really upbeat and talented.

A romantic serenade with Austin Webb

The rest of the night was spent in concerts with Jake Owen and Tim McGraw. Three amazing performances all in one night! It was definitely like a dream. Nothing gets better, especially when you are a country girl at heart. We sang to our favorite songs, got up close to see our favorite Country stars and had a great time making friends. Spending the weekend on this LaFleur Magazine project was like spending the weekend with family. We will never forget the memories; the bonds we made and share now. From battling the crowds, getting brought up to the stage, meeting Austin Webb, and seeing so many amazing performances, it was an unforgettable weekend. Definitely not just another average weekend! Well, that’s our story from The Oregon Jamboree 2014. Can’t wait to see you all next year!

ABOUT OWEN

JAKE OWEN Watching Jake Owen perform barefoot and in board shorts feels a lot more like attending a beach party than a country Music festival. His unique, laid-back performance style is a blast live, especially in the middle of summer. His singing talent is impeccable, although he didn’t set out to become a country Music star until he found himself right in the middle of building one. His quick rise to fame was set in motion by a devastating wakeboarding accident. Owen had played collegiate golf for Florida State University until his accident, which kept him from playing golf professionally. The closing of one door opened another according to Owen, which is when he began to develop his passion for music. Teaching himself guitar, he slowly learned chords and began to write his own songs. His performances started out singing in local spots until 2005, when he moved to Nashville. Within months, he had a Music Row song-publishing contract. Less than a year later, he was signed by RCA Records and was on the charts with his first two singles, “Yee Haw” and “Startin’ with Me.” He went from being a speck in a stadium crowd at a Kenny Chesney concert to opening shows for the superstar. Then Brad Paisley took him on the road as Owen scored his third hit, 2007’s “Something About a Woman.” In 2008, Owen opened shows for Sugarland and this year, Keith Urban asked Jake to be his touring partner on the Get Closer 2011 World tour. Jake Owen has previously enjoyed major-league success with such performances as 2006’s “Startin’ with Me,” 2008’s “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You,” and 2009’s “Eight Second Ride.” His revival of “Life in a Northern Town” with Sugarland and Little Big Town in 2008 earned him Grammy and CMA Award nominations. Owen was named 2009’s Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. But nothing, he says, compares to the impact his new music is making.

RE-IGNITE YOUR LIGHT

ESTÉE LAUDER

Advanced Night Repair will rejuvinate your skin and bring back that youthful glow.

ESTÉE LAUDER Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Complex II & Eye Serum

RE-IGNITE YOUR SKIN WITH LIGHT Start fall off right with the re-igniting power of age defying skin care such as Estée Lauder’s new, customized lightweight Advanced Night Repair serum or gel creme (under 1st header - website). We have all hoped to turn back time or stop the clock when it comes to our skin. We’ve been influenced all of our lives that youth = beauty. Youthful skin, complete with a flawless complexion, soft glowing cheek and brighter looking eyes, are what we hope to hold on to as long as possible. We layer on moisturizer, exfoliate, carefully apply eye creams and a mask once-per-week, all in hopes to preserve the beauty we have been given. As we grow older, we do realize that it is beautiful to look great at every age and staying young isn’t exactly what we are after--

after all, we’ve come to realize that wisdom reflects beauty. Growing up is all about enjoying every moment, every stage of life and paying attention to life’s joys and experience. But, when it comes to our skin, a youthful glow is a whole lot of fun! Through groundbreaking research, Estée Lauder’s proprietary Youth Light Measurement™ proves an entirely new equation that youth = light. The healthier and more youthful skin around the eyes appears, the more light it reflects. It is the light within skin that creates the youthful beauty we are all after. This fall, transform your skin with the new, Advanced Night Repair gel or serum and see that youthful, vibrant, brighter looking skin reappear.

Easy, Gluten Free Cherry Pie PREP: 20 MINS

TOTAL TIME: 65 MINS SERVINGS: 8

By Brandie Kajino

◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦◦ ◦ ◦

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425F. Mix all ingredients, including cherries with salt in a bowl; let stand about five minutes (or as needed to roll out the pie crust). Pour cherry mixture into 9-inch deep-dish pie pan (or standard if that’s all you have). Roll out your crust to fit on top of the cherry mixture (cut out cute shapes if you want). Carefully place crust on top of filling, and brush with heavy cream (or not). Place in the oven on middle rack, with a baking sheet set on lowest rack (to catch any spill over). Bake for 15 minutes at 425F. Keep oven door shut. Lower the oven temperature to 350F. Bake pie for additional 30 minutes, or until pie crust is golden, and filling is bubbling. Remove from the oven and let cool as long as you can stand it. Eat, preferably with vanilla ice cream.

NOTE I got three single crusts out of Bob’s Gluten Free mix, and a little batch of “leftover pie crust” cookies. YUM. Although I haven’t tried it, I think this pie would be delicious with fresh Bing cherries. I would reduce the sugar since they are quite sweet.
