Publisher's Note Plan a wedding perfectly styled for you, in the place you've always dreamed. It's All in the Details Preparing LaFleur Destination Weddings reminded me a lot of planning my own wedding; it was nerve-wracking, amazing, and delightfully rewarding. Throughout the journey, I kept being reminded of one simple word: Details. Details, details, and details. Did I mention details? It is easy to forget the numerous details involved in planning a wedding. I was also reminded that the nerve-wracking aspect of the planning process can be simplified by managing the details and hiring a wedding coordinator. Most brides think that a wedding coordinator isn't necessary or conducive to their budget, especially when planning a destination wedding. In fact, a wedding coordinator can work with almost any budget and help simplify the process to fit the event. Whether planning a destination wedding far from home or just around the corner, thoughtful planning will simplify the process and help keep your smile genuinely intact through the journey. The thing about a wedding is the moment encompasses a lifetime of expectation, wonder, excitement, and hopes. Not only for the bride and groom, but the families and friends too. No wonder it becomes a little nerve-wracking to plan one. We compiled details to simplify your planning. We selected a few must-have accessories such as trendy wedge sandals and scarves for the destination wedding. We found great great gift ideas, makeup dos and donts, tips from planning pros, florists, cake designers, and a bunch of possibilities for the perfect wedding destination that are sure to inspire. Our goal is to encourage you that planning a day to remember, enchanted with the details closest to your heart, can be done flawlessly. Throughout the months of planning this issue, I have been reminded that planning a wedding is so much more fun and rewarding with a team. A team of uniquely talented people help bring events together with ease and grace. Teams allow people to shine and show off their talents. The wedding cake, for example, becomes the passion of one uniquely gifted to create a signature piece of artwork with sugar. Photographers gifted to think 'outside the box' freely experiment with creative angles and color to capture your unique style and the special moments to last forever. They have the know-how to create priceless photos and artfully share a couple's story, which become part of their home and life to share throughout the years. We've all heard the saying that we is better than me. In the case of the wedding business, I think it's definitely true. After a season of planning weddings, I am even more certain that we truly are better together. One thing is for sure, it took a great team to put together this issue, and I am grateful for every single person and their unique talents. I hope you enjoy reading LaFleur's first destination wedding issue and become inspired to embark on the journey of planning a wedding perfectly styled for you, in a place you've always dreamed.

I find that unique elements and surprises for guests are what make a day most memorable.

NORA SHEILS Planning extraordinary weddings and special events is Nora Sheils specialty. Born and raised in Portland, OR, Sheils has been smitten with weddings since she was a child. After graduating from Gonzaiga University with a degree in Psychology & Business and working several years in the bridal industry, she decided it was time to take her expertise to the next level. Bridal Bliss opened its doors for business in 2002 and has since risen through the ranks as one of Portland’s top event planning firms. Sheils and her team work with brides to plan and prepare events of a lifetime. We asked Sheils how to help simplify destination wedding planning decisions and to include trends of 2014 into your big day. Sheils shares her expert planning tips including avoiding decorating faux pas. Read on to learn her five wedding planning tips and advice to enjoy a stress-free engagement.

planning

Q A Q A

What top wedding trends do you expect to see this year?

The top three trends I foresee for 2014 include geometric patterns in the décor such as modern and simple stripes, a rustic elegant vibe with dressed up barns being a focus and including techie elements in receptions such as an iPhone charging station. I find that unique elements and surprises for guests are what make a day most memorable.

After 12 years of planning weddings, what new wedding trends have you found create a day to remember? At Bridal Bliss, we love trends, but the key ingredient to incorporating trends is not going over the top. It's important for a wedding to feel like the couple's personality! That being said, if you want to incorporate some trends (ie: mason jars or mirrored vases), we love it. We recommend using them sporadically rather than having them completely take over. There is a fine line between being cohesive and tacky.

Q A

What top 3 tips would you give brides for a smooth wedding planning process?

The best piece of advice I can give to brides is to trust your planner. You hired this person for a reason, so have confidence that she has your best interests and will go to bat for you. There is no need to micromanage or stress about every single detail, your planner has it all covered. Knowing your planner is working hard for you, enjoy being engaged. Take some time off to just enjoy this special time in your lives and always remember that this is about the commitment you are making to your fiancé. A quote we love is “A wedding is a party, not a performance. If at the end of the day you are married to the one you love, then everything turned out perfectly.”

Q A

What advice would you give brides planning a destination wedding?

There are a few pieces of advice I would give to brides planning a destination wedding. First and foremost, hire a planner. Many people do not understand that wedding planners can save significant amounts of time and money, in addition to cutting back on the stress level throughout planning. We have a huge network of wedding professionals that we have negotiated discounted rates with, and all of those savings go directly to our clients. It is not necessary to have a huge budget or an extravagant wedding to benefit from working with a planner. There are substantial additional details that go into planning a destination wedding, and your planner can really lend her expertise to make the process seamless for you. Secondly, remember to keep your guests in mind throughout your planning. A destination means everyone will be traveling and spending significant amounts of money to celebrate you. Make it easy for them. Give them hotel/travel suggestions and negotiated group rates. Plan fun events that will help guests get to know one another and feel welcome!

Q A

What advice could you offer a bride planning an outdoor wedding in Oregon?

My biggest piece of advice for couples planning an outdoor wedding in the Northwest is to have a rain/ heat plan in place that you can execute if necessary. The weather in Oregon is incredibly unpredictable... we have had 100 degree days in October and pouring rain in August! To avoid unnecessary late minute stress and to ensure the day flows perfectly no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at you, think ahead. Regardless of time of year, a backup plan is always a necessity!

couture cakes SONJA MCLEAN of Sweet & Swanky Cakes CAKE TIPS How to choose the right cake and words of advice 1. Choosing the right wedding cake designer? It is important to select the right wedding cake designer to make sure your dream wedding cake will become a reality and taste as good as it looks! First, research all of your options and see who your other vendors recommend; look at their website and Facebook galleries and read reviews from past brides. Look to see if you like their style and if they can create what you have in mind. Making a wedding cake is far more involved than just frosting and decorations. A hand-tailored couture cake is typically a personal and intimate experience that takes many hours to bring it to life, so it is important to find someone you “click” with and who really grasps your wedding and personal style. The end result will be a wedding cake that is a custom work of art, hand-crafted and designed to reflect you.

3. When is the best time to plan a tasting and book my cake? After booking the venue or about 6-9 months prior to the wedding, it is time to design the cake. It is best to not wait to schedule your tasting and consult in order to assure that you LOVE your wedding cake! If you will not be visiting the destination wedding location until the event, I suggest booking with the designer of your choice early in the planning stages. This is where plenty of phone and Skype conversations, research, reviews and trust comes in. In many cases, the wedding cake is booked before a tasting has even been done. Bakers are limited to the number of orders they can take in a wedding season and do fill up quickly, especially if it is a destination wedding area.

2. How does the designer gather inspiration for the cake? Cake designers gather inspiration from all of the planned wedding elements, such as the details of the gown, the invitation design and flowers and decorations from the centerpiece arrangements. Think about the mood and feel that you are going after too; is your wedding romantic, natural, small and intimate, or refreshing, crisp, fun, and colorful? Combine your wedding style and tone with your own personal style and preferences and viola!

The wedding gown, flowers, and personal style inspire the wedding cake design. - Sonja McLean

Working together with the right cake designer will assure that you LOVE your wedding cake!

Sonja McLean of Sweet & Swanky Cakes WWW.LAFLEURMAGAZINE.COM

www.SweetandSwankyCakes.com

couture cakes 4. How will the process work if I don’t live in the area? Everything can be done via phone, email and/or Skype. You will need to be in close contact with your designer, sending them inspiration pics, photos of other cakes you like, your Pinterest Boards, and keeping them informed as your various wedding elements get lined out. You will also need to choose flavors and sign a contract (to protect both you and the baker) as well as work together on your design, which can all easily be done remotely. 5. Do I need to use a cake stand and is one provided? Your masterpiece will shine even more when it’s on the right cake stand! It elevates the cake hence making it appear larger, it can offer a variation in color and texture, and often times it is incorporated into the cake design itself. As a general rule, you are responsible for providing your own cake stand, but some bakers rent them out or offer them complimentary with your cake. If you decide to provide one yourself, make sure that it is completely level and is approved to handle the heavy weight (they can weigh up to 100 lbs!) of cakes. If you rent the stand, be prepared to pay a security deposit that will be returned to you once the stand comes back safely.

It is important to find a cake designer that you click with. One that grasps your style.

6. Do I need to use a cake topper? No! Not every cake needs to have something on top, and if you do wish to use one, talk it over with your cake designer. 7. Should I decorate the cake table and background? It depends on the look you are going for, the room, the size and shape of the table, the cake design, etc. I like to have something on the table besides just the linen. Some ideas include: a lace overlay, flowers, candles, old suitcases to put the cake on, a cute sign, a backdrop… something that will enhance the cake but not overpower it. Your cake is the main attraction (other than the newlyweds of course) at the reception with all eyes checking it out, AND it’s your first cake to celebrate the big day…show it off! Your wedding planner, cake designer, florist and rental company should be able to offer up some ideas perfect for you.

couture cakes 8. Where should I put the cake table? Location, location, and location is key! Be mindful of what is in the background such as tent posts, light fixtures, and other things you won’t want to see in your photos. Good lighting is a must (talk to your photographer) and it needs to be in a visible, level and safe area. 9. If the reception will be outside, what do I need to be aware of? This can be a tricky when it comes to the cake, especially if weather is not particularly ideal. If there is a chance that it will be warmer than 70 degrees, then do not order a buttercream cake or cream cheese frosting as it may melt. You will obviously need to keep the cake in a cool area if possible (not in the fridge if it’s a fondant covered cake) and brought out sometime before serving. Make sure the cake table is set up in the shade and on a level surface, with a nice background. If it is sprinkling rain or snow, keep in mind that fondant and water do not mix. It is important that you have adequate shelter to protect the cake from the elements to prevent the cake from spotting or ruining your precious sugar flowers.

10. What are the pros and cons to real vs sugar flowers on the cake? Real flowers are likely less expensive but can come with unwanted pesticides and residue that end up on the cake, and that isn’t the best mix for your guests. Sugar flowers can look like the real deal, and downright gorgeous, tailored to your color palette and style. They are created petal-by-petal and will cost you more, but the best part is, they will last forever and make great keepsakes from your wedding cake. Store your darling sugar mementos in a shadow box or in a clear covered cake stand, or in a dry place away from direct sunlight, and enjoy them for years to come!

DESTINATION WEDDING

STYLE TRENDS DREAMY STYLES FOR THE GET-AWAY BRIDE, HER GROOM & HER BRIDAL PARTY

P

utting together the right wardrobe for a destination wedding complete with the perfect gown, accessories, hair piece, and right shoe not to mention an impeccably styled bridal party, is a challenge for any bride.

When it comes to styling, destination weddings add a degree of complication from outdoor elements such as extreme temperatures or unpredictable weather, overseas flights, and both indoor and outdoor locations. Packing the right wardrobe can be a challenge! We have created a list of possibilities including some of the top 2014 wedding fashion trends. Just remember, comfort is vital for both the bride, groom and the wedding party. Suport your bridesmaids and groomsmen by buying them well-planned gifts and select a wardrobe well-suited for the event.

STYLE TIPS Bride Capture the essence of the destination location with your gown and accessories. Don't hesitate to use traditional elements mixed with trends. Your something blue can be a designer clutch or a classic pump in soft blue. Either way, mixing trends with classic lace or a vintage hair piece will create the timeless look you are after, while playing with fun trends. Bridesmaids A scarf or shawl provides an extra layer for unpredictable rain and protects from unwanted sun exposure during prolonged moments outdoors. A great wedge sandal is a comfortable shoe option and helps beat the heat. Groom Traditional cufflinks such as Kenneth Cole Reaction's brushed sterling look mixed with a linen tie such as TOMS速 gray washed will create a style for most destination locations. Groomsmen A light shoe with a durable sole such as TOMS速 Natural Burlap Brogues is a great option for an outdoor wedding in a warm climate. Styles that lace also offer sizing adjustments and may be dressed up or down.

timeless beauty DO completely fill in your lip with liner. Start by lining the outer part of your lip with Estee Lauder’s Automatic Lip Pencil Duo. Line your outer lip by making small circles with the pencil. Once the outer lip is lined, slowly move your circles inward until your entire lip is covered. Moving the pencil in small circles helps to ensure that the product is getting worked into your lip.

What's in Kim's Makeup bag?

I

magine 10 years from now, it’s a lazy afternoon and you are cuddled up with the love of your life talking about how magical your wedding day was. You grab your wedding album, open to the first photo and realize that maybe that bright blue eye liner was a poor choice. But it looked so good, and was so on trend! My advice to all brides is to be a classic, polished version of your everyday self. Your wedding is not the day to decide to rock that green eye shadow you saw on Pinterest (even if it goes PERFECTLY with your color theme). There is a reason why brides today still ask to look like Grace Kelly on her wedding day. Her look is timeless, effortless, and classic.

Dos DO make sure you cover under-eye circles and blemishes. For blemishes and uneven patches try using Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. This concealer is highly pigmented, and blends so naturally into the skin that you wouldn’t know it was there. To erase dark circles under your eyes use Clinique’s Airbrush Concealer. It contains light reflecting pigments that brighten the dark areas. DO use neutral tones such as gray, brown, and taupe. Dior makes an easy- to-use eye shadow palette that is stunning. Try Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow palettes in Grey, Incognito, or Rosy Tan. These shades are grouped together to be flattering in any combination.

DO get creative with your lip color. This is the one area on your face it is okay to let bright colors pop. However, if you have your eyes as the emphasis, try a more natural colored lip. Use M.A.C.’s Pro Longwear Lip Crème for all day staying power. Apply a layer over your lip liner, then blot. Take a tissue and place over your mouth, powder, and reapply your lipstick. Building layers and powdering helps the lipstick to stay in place so that it doesn’t smear. DO enjoy yourself! Ultimately, getting married isn’t about having the perfect hair or makeup on your wedding day. It’s about making a lifelong commitment to the one you love. So relax, and enjoy your special day with your special someone.

Donts DON’T cake on heavy layers of foundation. Less is more in wedding photos. Nothing says late 1990’s-2000’s like heaps of foundation. The more natural your skin looks, the better it will photograph. DON’T use bright colored eye shadows. Trust me, you will thank me later. Bright colors are fun for a night out, but not appropriate for a wedding. DON’T over contour with blush (think 1980’s fashion model). Stay away from blushes that have strong red, pink, or orange tones. Try to find a blushers that have soft, muted tones.

DO slowly build your blush. You can always add more if you feel it is too light, but it’s harder to tone down if you start heavy handed. Use Lancôme Blush Subtitle to build into the apples of your cheek, and softly sweep upwards towards your temple. This blush is meant to be long wearing, and doesn’t fade.

DON’T use lip liner exclusively on the outside of your lips. Lining only the outer part of your lip gives a tacky appearance in photos, not to mention looks completely unnatural.
