New Year’s Resolution Solution Program at the BBRC

Make 2019 the year you succeed in health! Whether you are looking to train for an event, lose weight, establish a general fitness plan, or improve your overall health, you can do it with the help of the Bob Burger Recreation Center’s dedicated fitness staff.

The Resolution Solution is a 6-week program designed to help you set and achieve your personal goals. You will receive unlimited access to the BBRC through February 26, weekly check-ins and classes, and support from other program participants. Throughout the program you’ll also earn points to apply towards prizes!

Lives – Past and Present

As we know, Lafayette is a city steeped in history. If you’ve ever taken a walk around Waneka Lake, you may have wondered where that name came from (and how is it properly pronounced?). Waneka Lake was built in 1865 at the site of a natural spring. The southeast corner of Waneka Lake Park features Lafayette’s oldest structure, the Waneka Granary.

Waneka Stage Stop History Henry Adolf Waenecke (later changed to Waneka) emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1854. In 1861, seeking to strike it rich in Colorado’s gold mines, Adolf, his wife Anna, and their three children, headed west from Connecticut and settled in a rudimentary cabin south of Louisville along Coal Creek. With the realization that the rich soil of the Coal Creek Valley would support bountiful crops, the family moved one mile east and constructed a two-story, 18x25 foot stone house that became the Waneka Homestead.

Beginning in about 1862, the Waneka’s homestead served as the Waneka Stage Stop and provided meals, water, horses, and camping spots for travelers journeying along the Cherokee/ Overland/Laramie Trail. This was the first stage stop in what is now Lafayette. In those days, many stage stops and passenger stations lined the trails, including Mary and Lafayette Waneka Homestead Miller’s “Miller Tavern Ranch” and hotel located two miles south of the Waneka Stage Stop. Stagecoach travel along this route discontinued shortly after the Denver Pacific Railway completed its tracks between Denver and Cheyenne in 1870.

Interview Process – Public Welcomed

After 20 years of service to the Lafayette community, City Administrator Gary Klaphake will be retiring in December.

City Council will be interviewing potential candidates the afternoon of November 27 and would like to invite residents to attend.

The public is also welcome to attend the candidate meet-and-greet event that evening at the Indian Peaks Golf Course.

While all that is left of the Waneka homestead is a foundation protected in an undisturbed island surrounded by cottonwood trees and fields, the City of Lafayette and Meritage Homes have collaborated to preserve a historical marker on the site. The public may visit the site in spring 2019 to look through this historical window, learn and appreciate more about those who came before us, and stand in the wagon tracks that led many early travelers through Lafayette.

Now both Waneka Lake and the Coal Creek Trail near the stage stop are outdoor recreational crown jewels of the City of Lafayette. On any given day throughout the year you can find families, bikers, runners and everything in between taking advantage of our beautiful weather (I’ve even run into pet cats on a leash enjoying the sunshine!).

Each year the Lafayette City Council hosts a series of monthly chat sessions that run September through May. The format is a casual group conversation that includes participant-led questions and discussions to provide residents with an opportunity to interact with elected Lafayette officials outside of a formal meeting environment.

Market 2019: Planning Committee and Survey

The Lafayette Farmers Market is moving into its third year of operation, and is looking for residents’ help to continue building on their successes. The E. Simpson location will again be the backdrop for the weekly event in 2019, and organizers are looking to introduce exciting features to the market. Meetings will be held over the winter months to enable Lafayette Market Ambassadors to provide input and direction. Email community@bcfm.org with your interest to be involved. You may also share your input through November 30 via the online survey available at www.bcfm.org.

Grocery Shopping Loop

Do you know someone who could benefit from a weekly ride to local grocery destinations? On Mondays and Wednesdays, Lafayette Senior Services picks up passengers from various neighborhood locations and transports riders to King Soopers, Sprouts, Wal-Mart, Vitamin Cottage, and the Sister Carmen Food Bank.

Plan – Community Input to Begin this Spring

In early 2019, work will begin on the development of a new city-wide Comprehensive Plan — a roadmap for the eventual buildout of the City. The Comp Plan process will identify the community’s goals and aspirations for Lafayette’s future development with an emphasis on in-fill and redevelopment.

The plan will establish policies, including but not limited to, open space, transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, public health, and housing.

Per City Council direction, this process will include a robust community engagement and public input component; a community assessment; a community survey; an analysis of key elements through a sustainability lens; a review of existing goals; a housing study; a fiscal analysis; a land use map update; and implementation recommendations.

Snow Removal and Snow Plowing

Snow and ice can be dangerous for children, the elderly, and all who use public sidewalks.

As a resident or property owner, it is your responsibility to remove snow and ice within 24 hours after the last measurable snowfall or snowdrift. Failure to do so could cause pedestrian injuries or result in a ticket. Please help keep Lafayette safe and accessible for everyone this winter.

The primary purpose of snowplowing is to clear roads for emergency responders. Snowplow routes are divided into primary and secondary snow routes with priority given to streets adjacent to hospitals and schools. View the route map at cityoflafayette.com/Snow. Remaining residential streets are plowed or treated only if snow accumulations exceed 10 inches of undrifted snow.
