CREATION OF A TUNNEL SYSTEM AT THE DUNDAS QUARRY
The Dundas South Quarry Extension is the newest licensed property of the Dundas WGTA site, which will supplement and extend our existing reserves in the North and South quarries. This extension yielded a unique challenge of access, as it was south of a city roadway, with another road running north-south through the property, a high pressure pipeline running east-west, and a main conveyor belt constraining the property on the East side.
The objective was to create a tunnel system for large 100-ton haul trucks and other mining equipment beneath Concession 4 road, providing access between the new extension and the existing crushing and conveying systems in the North Quarry.
Ensuring the seamless continuity of our operations while the project was underway was the challenge. In collaboration with the Mining and geology group, the site operations did an incredible job in unlocking previously constrained reserves, by properly identifying all critical variables, potential execution scenarios and challenges, and building project and operational contingency plans that ensured a successful implementation.
004 BUILT FOR ALL MAGAZINE ON THE GROUND
The original project design called for the tunnel length to be determined based on the relocation status of a pipeline that bisects the new quarry extension. Delays and unknowns in this relocation created the need for a contingency plan to keep the plant running while waiting on the relocation. By redesigning the tunnel to a shorter length and opening it into a small “box cut” between the pipeline and the property limit, an additional 2.1M tonnes of critical reserves are now accessible. This gave the site time for the pipeline relocation to take place in early 2023, with full production mining possible afterwards.
The project was successful due to the collaboration between Land, Manufacturing, Procurement and Environmental teams, along with the Site management. The project started in 2018 with permitting and applications. Construction took approximately one year, beginning December 2021, and wrapped up at the beginning of December 2022.
"Our Dundas quarry is our flagship aggregates operation in Eastern Canada. For over a century, the site has been a major economic driver in the west GTA, contributing to the building of our communities by supplying the materials used to build key infrastructure projects like the QEW and 407 Highways, recognized GTA landmarks as the Rogers Center, Hurontario LRT, Marylyn Monroe Towers, and the Toronto Waterfront Rehabilitation project, in addition to countless schools and hospitals."

LAFARGE ECAN DRIVES DECARBONIZATION
FULL CONVERSION OF THE BROOKFIELD CEMENT PLANT PRODUCTION TO GREENER PORTFOLIO
We recently announced the full transformation of our Brookfield Cement Plant’s cement production in Nova Scotia to a greener portfolio. The site’s production of general use cement (GU) ended to shift to reduced carbon portland limestone cementOneCem - our eco-efficient alternative.
Brookfield is Lafarge’s third cement plant to be converted in 2022 and the first Atlantic Market plant to convert - the others being the Bath Cement Plant (ON) in June 2022 and the Richmond Cement Plant (BC) in March 2022. OneCem is a sustainable product that presents up to 10% lower CO2 emissions while providing the same performance and durability.

“We have been steadily moving the needle forward when it comes to cement decarbonization and we will continue to honour our commitment in progressing our greener portfolio in Eastern Canada over the coming years. For us, sustainability and profitability go together - our main goal is to keep partnering with our customers to advance sustainable construction and, at the same time, provide innovative world-class products.”
Andrew Stewart, VP - Cement, ECAN
“Over the last four years, we avoided more than 140,000 tonnes of CO2 by converting GU cement to OneCem in our plants across Canada - the equivalent to taking 42,891 cars off the road, which would have consumed 59,640,854 liters of gasoline”
Rob Cumming, Head of Sustainability & Public Affairs, ECAN
“We are excited to take our plant to the next level of decarbonization. Our teams on the ground have been successfully showcasing our company’s values of passion, collaboration, and grit, and we couldn’t be prouder. This is a very important milestone in our Net-Zero journey in Nova Scotia and in Canada as a whole.”

At a time where environmental pollution is a growing concern, it is important to find solutions to restore water and soil quality. Phytoremediation is an environmental restoration technique that uses plants to remove or mitigate contaminants in soil and water.
Plants can be used in a variety of ways for phytoremediation. They can absorb contaminants into their tissues, store them in their roots, transform them into less toxic products or have them decompose into soil microorganisms. Some plants are more effective than others in treating different types of contaminants, and the choice of plants will depend on the contaminated site and the substances present.
Phytoremediation can be used to treat a variety of contaminants, including heavy metals, hydrocarbons, pesticides and industrial chemicals.
In addition to being environmentally friendly, phytoremediation is also economical. Plants can be grown on site from local seeds, reducing transportation and production costs. In addition, once treatment is complete, the plants can be used for other purposes, such as biomass production, which contributes to the sustainability of the site.
It is important to note that phytoremediation should not be considered a one-size-fits-all solution for all contaminated sites. In some cases, other techniques, such as excavation and disposal of contaminated materials, may be more appropriate. However, for sites that can be successfully treated with phytoremediation, this technique can provide a cost-effective and sustainable solution for environmental restoration.
In conclusion, phytoremediation is a promising technique for environmental restoration. By using plants to remove contaminants, we can work to restore water and soil quality, while minimizing environmental impact and saving money.

IMPLEMENTATION OF A SAFERACK DEVICE TO SAFELY ACCESS TRUCK DUMP
BOX
INITIATIVE LED BY THE GTA AGGREGATES TEAM
For drivers, traditional methods of entering a dump box are a working at height (WAH) hazard. Some trailers have access ports on the front of the trailer. However, drivers still have to step across the battery box behind the cab. In the winter this maneuver is risky due to slippery conditions.
Furthermore, the current - and widely usedfixed inspection platforms, are not suitable for the range of tasks a driver needs to complete to ensure a safe delivery. For instance, drivers need to periodically enter the dump box of their trucks to perform various tasks, such as digging out material that gets stuck. In the winter months, they need to apply liquid calcium to the inside of their dump box to create a non-stick surface, allowing material to flow freely when dumping. Failing to do so also represents a tip over hazard.
The GTA Aggregates team tackled these concerns by developing a project that also improves the overall aggregates delivery process. In collaboration with the Dundas Quarry crew, they worked on finding an efficient solution, adapted to the site’s reality and delivery imperatives. The project started in September 2020 and was completed in December 2022.

In collaboration with SafeRack, they developed a fixed device consisting of a stairway leading to a platform. Connected to the platform is a gangway plank that is manually deployed by the user. The gangway plank lowers and a ladder extends into the dump box. The user can then walk along the gangway plank from the platform and descend the ladder. The device uses a spring mechanism to assist the user to manually retract the gangway plank back into its resting position.
Kudos to the project team for leading this innovative initiative!

be stocked (eg: perishables such as milk, butter and eggs), gift cards are offered.
What’s more - the Club prepares baskets for families during the holiday season. When clients visit the Food Bank to pick up their basket, they also get to choose from a vast array of donated toys for their littles ones.
Over the course of a year, more than 500 local residents directly benefited from this service, either on a regular basis or when the need arose.
Our Bath Plant renewed its collaboration with the Bath & District Lions Club by supporting its food bank project and as part of the Local by Local initiative, $4,000 was donated this year.
The rising prices of food we have witnessed represents a struggle for an increasing number of Canadian families. The Bath & District Lions Clubs Food Bank is actively helping families facing this struggle, with the help of corporate sponsors and individual donors who provide food, cash and gift cards.
The formula is simple: clients fill out a shopping list upon arrival and with the assistance of a club member who verifies inventory, items are gathered and donated. If an item is not available or can’t
In keeping with the Local by Local initiative’s purpose, Lafarge has also been encouraging the Lions Club to make purchases from local businesses - increasing the benefits within the community. A special thank you to the Bath Plant employees who collected food items for the Food Bank in December.
