Lafarge’s Concrete Recycling Initiative

Earth Day Thought Leadership Piece

On this year’s Earth Day, Rob Cumming and Stephanie Voysey, shared their thoughts on how Lafarge Canada is leading the way toward circularity in our industry.

“Earth Day is here once again - an annual reminder to celebrate our beautiful planet, reflect on our environmental impact and how we can come together to take action.

This year’s theme “Planet vs Plastics” got us thinking about the role of

manufacturers in managing their products from cradle to grave—or back to cradle.

One of the most commonly used products in our daily lives is concrete. Concrete is the foundation of our civilization, we see it in buildings, bridges, roads, and sidewalks and in our own homes. Did you know that more concrete is sold each year than all other building materials combined?

TIRE DROP-OFF DAY at St. Constant Cement Plant

Fostering circular economy while serving the community

On May 4th, the Geocycle St-Constant team proudly hosted its annual Community Tire Drop Off Day, accepting used tires at no cost, from local businesses and residents. The team collected approximately 4,000 tires (45 tonnes), the largest volume collected since the first edition in 2022. Geocycle will supply the tires to the cement plant to be responsibly coprocessed which will help reduce the amount of traditional fossil fuels used to make clinker.

Kudos to the team for accelerating green growth, all while serving the local communities!

On May 29, ECAN Exco visited the future location of the first ever North American EV battery cell gigafactory, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Lafarge Canada is currently providing the aggregates for the construction project of the PowerCo SE’s factory. The Gigafactory will have six production blocks with a potential production

volume of up to 90 gigawatt hours – enough for about 1 million EVs a year.

The St. Thomas Gigafactory will create up to 3,000 new, highly qualified jobs. Plus, it has the potential to create up to tens of thousands more indirect jobs at construction companies, suppliers, partners, along

with local retail and other sectors. PowerCo SE was founded by Volkswagen in 2022 with a clear vision to lead the charge in battery cell production on a global scale. PowerCo SE have made plans for three gigafactories –including the St. Thomas Gigafactory – with two of them now under construction.

ECAN hosts a tour for local students at Dundas Quarry

READ THE NOTE IN FRENCH

On May 23rd, ECAN hosted about 50 students from St Joachim’s at the Dundas Quarry for a tour, as well as then going into class to talk to them about the aggregates industry. The highlights were going up to see the Primary Crusher in the North Quarry and going through the tunnels under Concession Rd 4 West and Highway 5. At the school, the team went over the rock cycle,

the difference between pits and quarries, where minerals and fossils are found, the types of jobs that are available at Lafarge, how the team licenses land, the production and rehabilitation process etc.

According to the local team, “We discussed pertinent gravel facts to ensure they understood the connection back to how we use these essential materials in our everyday lives. We then had

some giveaways for the best guesses for how long the new tunnels were.” The kids got to handle a number of fossil and rock samples, look at die cast models of heavy equipment and play a matching card game aimed at understanding potential concerns the community may have with some of the activities that are undertaken and how responsible producers ensure to mitigate for those concerns.

ECAN SPONSORS Concrete Conference in Ottawa (2024 ICAAR)

Last month, Lafarge Canada was honored to be a proud exhibitor and sponsor of this prestigious conference, bringing together brilliant minds from around the globe to tackle the challenges of alkali-aggregate reactions (AAR) in concrete.

At Lafarge, we are deeply committed to addressing AAR effectively to ensure the longevity and reliability of our concrete structures. Our approach

focuses on:

> Using non-reactive aggregates

> Utilizing low-alkali cement

> Incorporating supplementary cementitious materials

Our high-performance concrete mixes supplied by BMQ, including Ductal and ADHEMax, are engineered to deliver exceptional strength and durability. These innovative solutions are

ideal for preventing AAR in new constructions and repairing structures affected by AAR.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth and engaged with our representatives Richard Malantic, Thomas Pizzuto, Chloe Monin, Yee Mon Thant, and Monica Menegaz-Martins!

Together, we’re building a future that stands the test of time.

P R I D E MONTH

June is Pride Month and marks the beginning of the Pride season, which lasts until the end of September.

Pride Month allows us to celebrate our LGBTQ2S+ community and their achievements, resilience, and contributions. As builders of progress, creating and cementing foundations for an inclusive space is a year-long commitment, and we wholeheartedly embrace this.

During June, we break away from individual

efforts and come together to present a united front for respect and acceptance. We aim to create an environment where everyone can bring their unique and authentic selves to work.

To kick things off, we are introducing the 2024 Pride Zoom Banner. You can download it and use it as your Zoom background to show your support by following the instructions here.

Learning and understanding go a long way when it comes to

acceptance. Hence, the P@L (Pride at Lafarge) team has prepared the following resources to help you become more familiar with present conversations around Pride and allyship.
