LAFARGE CANADA HONOURS

FATHER GEORGE GARDNER’S LIFE

Father Gardner, who passed away earlier this year, had a very important role at Lafarge Whitefish River Terminal. His presence and support were instrumental in the negotiation and signing of the Terminal’s 50-year agreement.

Throughout the years, his dedication to the community was both unwavering and sincere. In 2017, in order to honour Father Gardner’s life, Lafarge built a waterfront pavilion and named it “The George Gardner Wassai Giizhagaad Bright Day Pavilion”.

According to Howard Scruton, Operations Manager, Northern Ontario: “As an organization, we were all deeply saddened by the news of his passing at the beginning of this year. His community involvement was a testament of his great stature and respect. The local team will always remember him as the remarkable person he was and we will do our best to follow in his footsteps - his charismatic presence will be forever missed.”

Please join us in honouring Father George Gardner’s fruitful life.

The ECAN IDEAL Committee partnered with the Canada BIPOC Affinity Group to bring various initiatives throughout the month of February. Check out your colleagues’ amazing stories below:

Meet our Lafarge Storytellers

Kelvin Dick, Operations Coordinator (MB), shares what being Black means to him.

“Being Black instinctively brings a warm feeling of deep connections to rich cultural traditions that has been around for

thousands of generations and has survived many outside influences that have sort to subjugate it.”

Lefentse Makoko, Plant Manager - Bath, who shares what being Black means to him.

“In South Africa, it is customary to have two or three ceremonies for a wedding. They generally focus not just on the two people getting married but rather on bringing together the two families.”

Ardith Stoute, Talent & Organizational Development Manager, as

she recounts a moving part of ther trip to Ghana.

“Built over 500 years old, Elmina Castle is located on Cape Coast, in Ghana. The beauty of the castle stands against the backdrop of the Gulf of Guinea facing the Atlantic Ocean. Behind its majestic walls and towers are many rooms, some of which hold the horror that betrays its beauty.”
