GETTING TO KNOW

The ECAN DATA Integration & Transformation Team

Check out the group’s work scope and latest projects

In 2023, ECAN’s Data Integration & Transformation function was created to be a part of ECAN ExCo, under the leadership of Anson Le, Director, Data Transformation. The area’s mandate is to work with the Americas Digital Center (ADC) and Holcim Global Digital, build a strategy to aggregate, cleanse, and leverage data to empower business-led projects with

clearly defined success metrics of revenue growth, sustainability, and cost savings.

According to Anson, “When I look back on our team’s journey so far, I pause to think about where we have landed, the work we have accomplished, and whether we have steered in the right direction – and I believe we have made

Lafarge ECAN RMX team is collaborating with SalDan on two major developments in Sault Ste. Marie: The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 housing project and a 108-unit apartment building on Pim Street. Lafarge provided the concrete, including the foundational and

structural elements. We are proud to contribute to the growth and revitalization of the city by addressing housing needs.

“We are excited to collaborate with SalDan Construction on such significant projects. At Lafarge Canada, we are committed to providing sustainable and innova-

tive concrete solutions that meet the needs of our communities. These developments are perfect examples of how we can combine heritage preservation with modern construction techniques to address housing shortages and enhance urban living.” - Jayson Hill, Head of Northern Ontario, RMX, ECAN

LAFARGE ECAN presents Key Papers at the 2024 CSCE

Lafarge ECAN presented three key papers at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) Annual Conference 2024 in Niagara Falls, showcasing our advancements in sustainable construction materials and technology. Richard Malantic presented a paper on ECOPact highlighting its role in reducing carbon

footprints with optimized particle packing models. He also held a DYNAMax presentation focused on its superior mechanical and durability properties, ideal for smart structure design in demanding applications.

Rahma Dhemaied, from Concordia University, presented the application of recycled concrete aggregates for road

construction in our collaborative project with the University.

These presentations not only reflect our commitment to sustainability and innovation but also position Lafarge as a leader in developing cutting-edge construction materials.

ECAN Head of Sustainability participates in podcast

R

ob Cumming recently shared ECAN’s journey to enhance sustainability in our operations on The 360 on Energy and Carbon podcast. The Head of Sustainability & Public Affairs (East) highlights a critical challenge:

“We need affordable housing. People need places to live, and concrete is very resilient. We’ve got to find a way to affordably reduce our carbon emissions, and that’s where I think innovation comes in.”

Rob shares examples of how Lafarge is achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions and stresses the role of innovation, market systems, and rule changes in driving sustainability. The discussion also delves into biodiversity and how Lafarge aims to be net positive in biodiversity through quarry operations and restoration projects. Rob highlights

the necessity for making sustainability profitable and the importance of good governance and accountability in achieving that goal.

Lafarge ECAN and Urban Resilience: Innovative design at the Pitt Concrete Plant in Montreal

With the increasing frequency of torrential rains caused by climate change, stormwater management is crucial for urban infrastructures. Montreal’s Lafarge Pitt Concrete Plant stands out for its innovative approaches to urban resilience, rehabilitating a former abandoned industrial site and revitalizing the neighborhood.

Stormwater management:

The plant was designed to have the capacity to capture up to 393 000 litres of rainwater. This

capture system controls the flow sent to the municipal system and prevents on site flooding. The collected water can be used for concrete production, reducing the plant’s reliance on the municipal water supply.

Green infrastructure:

The project also includes innovative landscaping with vegetated areas and permeable soils. These green spaces, designed by landscape architects, maximize stormwater absorption and reduce rainwater runoff. A new “sponge zone” is currently being studied

to verify the absorption capacity. In addition to their practical functions, these landscaping designs enhance the neighborhood’s appearance.

The majority of activities at the sites are conducted inside the repurposed building, mitigating noise and dust emissions from the plant. These initiatives demonstrate Lafarge’s commitment to sustainable urbanization, and to protecting and strengthening Montreal’s resilience to climate challenges.

ECAN CEO speaks at Canadian Green Building Council’s annual conference

We were proud to be a sponsor of the Toronto 2024 Building Lasting Change Conference held by the Canadian Green Building Council. In his remarks at the first night reception, David Redfern welcomed the delegates noting that by 2030 Lafarge Canada’s cement portfolio will have a 40% lower CO2 content than at the start of the decade, and we’re already 25% lower compared to 2021.

He added that this reduction is from the hard work of implementing known solutions but that further reductions will rely on Pilots and Partnerships with businesses like the ones attending this Conference.

BUILDING Homes, Rebuilding Lives

Discover our partnership with Homes for Heroes for Affordable Veteran Housing

Lafarge Canada has proudly partnered with Homes for Heroes, a foundation with an unwavering mission to reintegrate homeless military Veterans into the community. We’ve supported the Kingston Veteran Village project by investing $40,000 worth of cement, concrete, and aggregates for the construction of secure

housing facilities.

“In a nation with over 460,000 Canadian Veterans, the staggering reality of over 5,000 vets experiencing homelessness cannot be ignored. This reality fuels the Homes For Heroes mission, which is not just about providing housing but making it sustainable and affordable. For us at Lafarge, it is an honour to collaborate with them in crafting unique urban villages in key cities

across Canada where homeless Veterans can successfully reintegrate into civilian life.” - Rob Cumming, Head of Sustainability and Public Affairs, ECAN.

Congrats to the teams involved for shaping a future where sustainability meets affordability and community involvement!

CALEDON PIT RUN fundraising was a huge success

This edition, presented in partnership with Aecon, brought together our teams and members of the community for a fun day to enjoy the outdoors and to support a great cause. $37,000 were raised for the Headwaters Health Care Centre to benefit patient care in

the local community! Congratulations to everyone involved in making it a great success and thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event.

“Lafarge Canada has taken great pride in being a good steward in the Caledon community for the past 20 years.

Our commitment to environmental and social stewardship is at the forefront of our business, as we are committed to our purpose of building progress for people and the planet,” said Matthew Ruggieri, General Manager, Aggregates, GTA. Show your support

RISE TO NEW HEIGHTS UPDATE

We’re excited to share that the planned listing of our North American business is on track, starting with one of the most important steps in the process.

• A key priority has been on a draft Form 10 “registration statement” to be fi led with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) in order to be authorized to publicly list the company in the United States. This statement off ers a description of the business with key info that would allow investors to make informed investment decisions. Once that process is concluded, we can proceed with the registration and public listing.

• A dedicated Project Management Offi ce (PMO) team has been organized, including cross-functional members from across North America. This team is focused on Day 1 readiness in order to ensure a seamless execution of the listing process.

• We’ve also been working on naming our new company, involving our North American team and conducting legal reviews to fi nalize a strong brand name. This process involved employee focus groups and interviews with our customers and key partners over the course of several months. Learn more on RiseBuildShape.com
