I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE FACT THAT GEOCYCLE IS SYNONYMOUS WITH OUR JOURNEY OF SUSTAINABILITY AND DECARBONIZATION AT LAFARGE EASTERN CANADA AND HOLCIM GROUP.
A warm welcome to the November edition of our vibrant and informative e-magazine – Built for All. Looking back, it has been almost a year since Jan Jenish introduced our Strategy 2025 Accelerating Green Growth. Since then, the commitment, collaboration, and grit to deliver on the strategy’s key pillars is amply evident across the entirety of ECAN.
As a member of Geocycle Canada, I take great pride in the fact that Geocycle is synonymous with our journey of sustainability and decarbonization at Lafarge
Eastern Canada and Holcim Group. We have been taking giant strides in ECAN to deliver our
performance and sustainability metrics, through increasing the co-processed volumes of alternative low carbon fuels and raw materials.
In that sense, we have begun to invest in preprocessing facilities that will redirect ever-increasing waste streams away from landfills and incinerators, for example, and safer and more robust co-processing installations at our cement plants, that will capture the resource value and recover
energy from waste. More specifically, the recently approved Project Phoenix at Brookfield is a classic example of this circularity in motion.
In addition, we also continue to work closely with our Aggregates and Ready-mix business lines to ensure that we grow circular economy through our involvement with construction and demolition waste. As a matter of fact, our unique value proposition that aims at recycling 100% of the construction and demolition waste generated is at the forefront of Geocycle’s own growth strategy.
The story begins with land Acquisition. Sometimes properties are presented to Lafarge by a willing seller, other times by knocking on doors and making offers. Whichever way, the Land Group is involved from the outset, evaluating properties and leading the negotiations. During this stage, there is plenty of work going on in the background, which includes reviewing zoning and geological mapping, as well as understanding easements and encumbrances on the property. For potential Aggregate and Cement properties, an extensive drilling program is undertaken to validate potential resources and quality.
Once Lafarge ECAN has successfully obtained a property, the real work begins with what we call Land Use Planning Approvals. To use the land for our business purposes, there are numerous approvals required. For example, Ready Mix land assets often require rezoning or an official plan amendment, whereas Cement and Aggregate land assets require multiple technical studies to obtain the appropriate approvals and licences needed to operate a site. This includes noise studies, natural environment assessments, and hydrogeological reports; just to name a few.
From understanding a property’s geology, applying for rezoning, to appealing property taxes, the ECAN Land Group manages it all.
To appreciate the impact of the group on Lafarge's business in Eastern Canada, you must first understand the life cycle of a property.
• The Land Group has more than 120 years of Lafarge experience amongst our team of 12 people.
• In the last +/-20 years, the Land Group has helped ECAN acquire over 100 properties, totaling close to 5,000 acres of land and containing more than 250MT of new potential aggregate resources.
• The Land Group will drill 2,150 m in rock and 1,430 m in sand and gravel to evaluate resource/reserves and quality evaluation in 2022 alone.
• Since 2006, the Land Group has divested 114 properties to generate over $50M in net proceeds.
• Since 2016, the Land Group has replenished 375MT of new resource/ reserves for ECAN through land acquisition, royalty agreements, new licence approvals and its reserve validation and mining plan program.
In September, the ECAN ExCo group visited the Brookfield Cement Plant, as part of their YearEnd gathering in Nova Scotia. Travis Smith, Plant Manager, hosted the event, which consisted of a Plant Tour and a meeting with a local startup with an innovative carbon utilization technology developed in Dalhousie University. In addition, the entire plant team and ExCo members took the opportunity to enjoy lunch from a local Food Truck as a thank-you and to cap off a strong summer of operations.
“Our team is very excited about hosting today’s event with our ExCo. We’re very proud of our plant and are always happy to showcase to others the great work being accomplished here in Brookfield”, said Travis Smith.
To be honest, I do not remember a more exciting time than the last few years. New digital tools have become available; we launched innovative products and services and grew our portfolio offer for our valued customers. It has contributed to building progress for the planet and people.
Building a sustainable future is one of our top priorities, and looking back at what we have accomplished so far, it has set a strong foundation to continue to grow and reach our Vision 2026. The launch of our sustainable brands, such as ECOPlanet and ECOPact, have created opportunities to reconnect with over 750 architects, engineers, consultants and developers in the construction industry through over 200 webinars and meet & greet events, despite a pandemic environment.
Our efforts have created momentum in the market and we have achieved great sales growth and performance since the end of 2020. Last year ECAN RMX sold 30,000 m3 of ECOPact, and that was our product launch year. Year to date, we will have delivered over 180,000 m3 of it when this article goes to press. This represents 7.4% of sales volume to date and our sales team has already bid over 500,000m3 of sustainable projects opportunities. Overall, we have helped reduce some 25 million tons of CO 2 . Awesome! It has reinforced our valued brand and reconfirmed our leading position, as well as differentiate us from the competition.
In the coming week will already be our last stretch of the year, but the sales team has not said its last words. Among our priorities for cash, growing our forward order book for 2023, etc., the team is participating in a few exciting events to keep the momentum going with our sustainability brands.
[AS] That’s a great story. In your opinion, what is the best thing about your job? I mean, what makes you wake up in the morning and go to work?
[SE] I really appreciate the group I work with in London. Everyone is very supportive, willing to help where they can and point you in the right direction.
[AS] It is wonderful to have a team like that. In that sense, what has your career been like at Lafarge?
As we continue to highlight our very own ECAN female drivers and operators on Dispatch and Built for All e-magazine in the Women on Wheels series, let’s learn more about Sandra Elliot’s career journey, RMX driver - check out her interview below.
[Anna Salomao] Hi Sandra, thanks for taking the time to speak to us. Let’s jump right into it. How did you discover your passion for driving? How long have you been doing it professionally?
[Sandra Elliot] Thanks Anna. I started driving in 2005, my dad had a small company of three trucks and needed a driver. Since he couldn’t find one willing to do the job, in the small town that we lived in, I got voted in! I have been driving since I turned 16 and I started driving professionally in 2005, about 17 years ago.
[SE] Every day is an adventure. You never know what you're going to be doing or who you are going to be dealing with until the ticket pops up on the tablet. The hardest part of the job, being a woman, is that some customers are more close minded than others, and have an occasion to talk down, thinking that you can’t do the job as well as a man. It’s easy to fix their attitude, for the most part, by showing that you are capable and can do the job just as good as a man, sometimes better. I mean, at the end of the day, it shouldn’t matter if a driver is a man or a woman.
[AS] Thanks for sharing. Can you tell us how you identify with the company’s values of Passion, Collaboration, and Grit?
[SE] This is the story of my life! Anything worth having is worth working for. I do my best every day, to show that the company values are upheld in the way I do my job.

In early 2022, Aggregates Product Line launched the ECAN Aggregates Operational Awards consisting of two categories: Operational Performance and Operational Excellence. These bi-annual awards are designed to promote operational improvements, drive competitiveness between sites, and recognize the outstanding people that are instrumental to these ideas.
Aggregates operations are complex and filled with daily demands that result in losing sight of the outstanding work that is being accomplished on our sites. The H1 awards have just recently been announced, and we are excited to share the news!
The Operational Performance Award is composed of two subcategories: best improvement in heavy mobile equipment (HME) idling and best improvement in plant availability and primary black belt time.
• We are excited to announce the H1 best improved HME idling goes to Olivia Matthews and Scott Jackson from Belleville/Kingston area in Eastern Ontario. The area showed an improvement of 46% year over year!
• The winner for the best improvement in plant availability and primary black belt time goes to Mario Levasseur and Donald Perron from St.Gabriel in the Greater Montreal Area. They showed a combined improvement of 27%!
The Operational Excellence Award is composed of two subcategories: best housekeeping improvement and best operational excellence initiative.
• We are pleased to announce our H1 housekeeping award goes to Chris Burrill from Moodie Drive. Chris spent time and effort to beautify the appearance of the site entrance and created a separate parking area for HME to improve traffic segregation.
• The winner of the best operational initiative goes to Jeff Snow and Jennifer Bolibruch from Dundas Quarry. Jeff implemented a telemetry type system using tablets inside the shipping loader to provide the loader operators with valuable customer truck information to reduce truck turnaround times. Jeff also installed a simple but effective traffic calming measure by placing jersey barriers on a downhill ramp to reduce truck speeds.
Congratulations to all the H1 winners!
The Lafarge Leadership Development Program (LLDP) cohort represents 13 LLDPs from all product lines and functions within 3 provinces who have been involved in this program since June 2021.
The cohort is 'graduating' on December 6th and will be presenting their final capstone projects from 10am -12pm at Airport Road. This year we will implement a different format and introduce a LLDP Project Fair, that will allow you to walk through the various exhibits at your leisure and engage the LLDPs individually to ask questions about their projects.
Please stay tuned for a calendar invite so you can join in and walk through any time 10am-12pm to engage our LLDPs on their journey at Lafarge. Your attendance will demonstrate our commitment and support for the LLDP program and the graduates. Following the Project Fair, we can all participate in the Collaboration Tuesday lunch.
Thank you in advance for your participation and support.

Latin American Heritage Month is celebrated in October throughout Canada to recognize the Latin American community’s tremendous contribution to Canadian society.
Hailing from all 20 Latin American countries, Canadians of Latin American origin make up a large and growing community in Canada. They enrich our national fabric with diverse and vibrant cultures, cuisine, music, dance and more. Also, members of the Latin American community play an important role in Canada’s growth and prosperity, thanks to their entrepreneurial spirit.
Throughout the month, we toured the different countries through the lens of our Latin American employees to learn more about their heritage and to honour the rich cultural and artistic traditions of our fellow Canadians.
From October 17 to 21, IDEAL (ECAN Diversity Committee) and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion groups (WCAN) celebrated 2022 Construction Inclusion Week by promoting a weeklong campaign targeted towards employees across Canada.
The objective was to build awareness of the need to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in the construction industry. Throughout the week, they shared content regarding Commitment & Accountability, Belonging, Supplier Diversity, Workplace Culture and Community Engagement.

The time has come for us to reconnect and get to know each other once again. Nothing drives collaboration, fun and innovation like unstructured time together by the coffee machine or over lunch.
In that spirit, we are making Tuesdays, ECAN Collaboration Day. We encourage everyone to make that your day to come to the office and connect with your fellow Lafarge Canada teammates.
To spark the engagement, each week a different department will host a lunch, representing a different culture's cuisine.
For any questions, please contact karey.selvagio@lafarge. com (Toronto) and sylvie.allard@lafarge.com (Montreal).

On October 23, our teams in Ottawa participated in the ECAN Family Event in Ottawa at Parc Omega. The event turnout was impressive and ECAN employees had a great time with their families and colleagues. To our Ottawa teams, thank you for attending!
Last month, ECAN Cement Division donated 42 mt of cement to the new Robinson Playground Ice rink in Sudbury. The location is very dear to our very own Wayne Huska, Distribution Operations Manager, Southern Ontario, who grew up near the Robinson Lake. Like in the past, the playground still is the focal point of the community - where children regularly play during winter or summer.
The City officials, other sponsors, and ECAN representatives attended an opening event on October 28th. The grand opening is expected to take place in December. Click here to read an article on Subury.com
Great job, team. Let's keep building progress for people in our local communities.
A group of female employees from Lafarge ECAN and Innocon recently participated in the Habitat for Humanity Women Build in Toronto.
They laced up their work boots to help build 20 stacked townhomes for as many very deserving families. The activity was organized by the WILL Committee - marking its first collaboration with Habitat.
New friendships were made and connections were re-kindled with a lot of laughter and some Zumba moves thrown in as well.
Thank you to all the fabulous women who participated and built progress!

Our leadership and builders of progress from across diverse markets share their unique perspectives on accelerating green building. What's your next step? Watch to get inspired.
For more tips, visit your local municipal websites to learn about water in your community, as well as potential grants for water savings projects.
For a deeper dive into water savings: Calculate your water footprint at https://www.watercalculator.org/
Water is one of Canada’s most abundant natural resources, and most Canadians consider it our most important one, but we also are the biggest water wasters, ranking 3rd in the world for water consumption per person.
Most of us in major urban areas don’t think twice about where our water comes from or where it goes, or worry if it is clean enough to drink. Our overconsumption of water has led to overbuilding of water infrastructure, which requires an enormous amount of energy to move and treat the water, and significant cost to maintain or replace. This accelerates our climate impact, which further damages our infrastructure, which becomes expensive to fix, and risks the availability of clean water to our homes, leading to a vicious cycle.
Get a low-flow toilet: Flushing is one of the biggest water consumers in the house. Older toilets can use over 10 litres per flush. The newer low flow/dual flow toilets use between 2 to 5 litres per flush. This is a savings of more than 50%, equal to $75 per year on your water bill
Displace the water in your tank: Displace water in your tank by placing a sealed plastic bottle filled with some pebbles. This will reduce your water in your tank by 50%
Check for leaks: Put some food colouring in your water tank. If the colour appears in the bowl you have leak. Get it repaired.
WHEN AT HOME: Practice “If it’s yellow, let it mellow.” The saying may be cliché, but it’s good advice. If you’re grossed-out by the “yellow,” just put the toilet lid down. Please don’t do this at the office.
Don’t flush things that don’t belong. Throw tissues and other hygiene products in the garbage to avoid clogging the pipes and costly water treatment system repair.
Put a bucket in the shower while your waiting for the water to warm up, and then use the water you catch for watering plants, cleaning, or flushing the toilet
Install a low-flow showerhead. This can cost some money upfront, but has a quick pay back time – usually less than 1 year. Typical shower heads use 15 litres per minute, a low flow head can cut this in half.
Spend less time in the shower! A 5 minute shower per day, can use over 18,000 liters of water per year. If you easily lose track of time, use music to help time your showers and try to get your shower down to 1 song!
Install aerators in your faucet. A convention faucet uses 11 litres per minute. By installing an aerator, this reduces down to 6 litres per minute. These are readily available at hardware stores for less than $10 (less than a 1 year payback time)
Turn off the water. This is an obvious one, but just a reminder - if your shaving, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, don’t let the water run. This is the simplest way to save water.
By reducing your bathroom consumption by 35% , the average household can save over 40,000 litres per year , or a cost savings of $200 . Or, in simpler Lafarge terms – that’s about 5 ready-mix trucks full of water per house household, per year!
