Dear colleagues, As we reach the year's halfway point, it is clear that 2022 is shaping up to be a year to remember. The current cocktail of inflationary pressures, supply chain issues and external socio-political volatility (post pandemic adjustments, multiple sector strikes, etc), is far from typical, and it's been energizing to witness our teams reassess, adjust, and refocus on our key priorities with exemplary Passion, Collaboration, and Grit.

While it is critical for us to adapt our leadership style to better navigate the unstable environment - thought piece on

this on the following pages - it is also critical for us to keep our focus on our long term goals, such as sustainability and our path to Net Zero; celebrate our successes, and recognize the evolution of our corporate culture - all tangible signs of our progress.

This edition is loaded with stories of success and achievement: from ECAN being recognized as First Place in the group Global Safety Awards to achieving significant milestones on key Innovation initiatives, like Blue Planet and OneCem, in addition to highlighting key

operations and celebrating our diversity through Pride Month.

Most importantly, the articles and stories shared in this edition are a testament to the strength of our teams, our drive for success, and our commitment to Building Progress for People and Planet. There is a lot to feel proud of!

INSIDE BROOKFIELD CEMENT PLANT - INTERVIEW WITH TRAVIS SMITH, PLANT MANAGER We had the pleasure of meeting our ECAN team at Brookfield Cement Plant and through their stories we have learned more about the site’s history and accomplishments throughout time. Check out Travis Smith's story below and find more about Brookfield operations.

Travis has been with Lafarge since 2013, when he started as an LLDP - Product Specialist. Travis has held a few different roles throughout the years, such as Sales Manager for Aggregates and Ready-mix in Moncton, Sales Manager for Cement in Atlantic Canada, and Senior Manager for Geocycle (ECAN). He became a Plant Manager back in May 2021.

You're under the same roof with your entire team. READ MORE ON CONNECT AND CHECK OUT THE ARTICLE IN FRENCH Projects on-the-go When it comes to ongoing and upcoming projects, Travis comments that two of the plant’s biggest costs are fuel and energy. “There are two big opportunities; one with low-carbon fuel and the potential preprocessing and coprocessing project Phoenix with Geocycle, which will lower our traditional fuel cost, lower our reliance on coal and will lower our CO2 footprint as well.

In addition, we’re in the process of putting together a waste heat recovery project - where we can take heat off of the back

end of the kiln and use it to generate electricity and fuel the kiln. Phase 1 is waste heat recovery, Phase 2 would be biomass cogeneration and Phase 3 would be wind/solar.”

For Travis, reducing their reliance on traditional fuel and taking the plant off the grid is one of the main objectives and from a cost perspective, it will have the biggest impact for the plant. “My vision for Brookfield is for it to become an innovation hub for Holcim because of our size, our team and the fact that we know that we need to think outside the box.”

OUR HUMAN ACTIVITIES REALEASE 600 MILLON TONNES OF CO2 ANNUALLY INTO OUR ECOSYSTEM. THIS IS EQUATES TO ROUGHLY 16 TONNES PER CAPITA Throughout my career in the building materials industry, I have seen how enabling individuals to act in their selfinterest creates competition, which in turn drives progress. However, when it comes to shared or common resources, this competition can lead to a phenomenon known as the tragedy of the commons first identified by the economist William Forster Lloyd.

In the tragedy of the commons, individuals with unhampered access to a shared resource act only in their own interest and, in doing so, ultimately deplete the resource. This, in my opinion, is the crux of the issue in sustainability. Our environment is at the point of crisis because it is a shared resource with minimal accountability for its use. In Canada, our human activities release 600 million tonnes of BUILT FOR ALL MAGAZINE

CO2 annually into our ecosystem. This equates to roughly 16 tonnes per capita.

With such a staggering emission figure, blocking our path to net zero, there is little doubt we all must change. The question is how we achieve change balancing costs and the impact to our quality of life. As this crisis was caused by our collective actions, so too must be the solution. Operating in silos will not be the answer; nor will waiting for science to resolve it behind a laboratory door. This will be a team sport.

As we navigate what seems to be the final stages of COVID-19 pandemic, we are now facing subsequent crises regarding the uncertainty and volatility involving multiple dimensions of the business management ecosystem. Some key perspectives I’d like to point out are:

On Monday, May 16, Maranda Briggs, a new team member of the Sand Strategy operation, was conducting her morning inspection on the haul truck she would be operating. She found a dog who had climbed into the front suspension of the vehicle and got stuck.

This year marks 60 years of business with Béton Laurier. Lafarge has been proudly supplying cement to the Côté family for decades.

Béton Laurier is a family owned and operated business located in LaurierStation Québec, near Québec City.

Gaétan Côté, the President runs the day-to-day ready-mix concrete operations. His sister France handles finance and their 3 brothers (Daniel, Gérald and Domenique) also work at the compay and are partners. Gaétan's father, Fernand, started the company in the early 60s.

Cheers to this great relationship!

LAFARGE CANADA ACQUIRES MATHERS ST-EUSTACHE QUARRY AND ASPHALT OPERATIONS IN QUEBEC

On June 30, Lafarge Canada announced the acquisition of the Mathers’ St-Eustache Quarry (Carrière St-Eustache Ltée) and Asphalt (Pavage St-Eustache Ltée) operations (QC).

The investment will further complement Lafarge Aggregates' network and reinforce the company’s leading position as a sustainable and innovative building solutions provider in the Montreal (East and South Shore) and Lower Laurentians (Quebec) region. The deal reiterates the company’s Strategy 2025 to expand its Aggregates business through critical acquisitions of pits, quarries, docks, and depots in strategic high growth markets.

“This is the largest aggregates acquisition in Eastern Canada for Lafarge in over a decade and represents an opportunity to integrate an established business, with strong community roots and a history of responsible operation, into our Lafarge Aggregates family,” commented David Redfern, President & CEO, Lafarge Canada (East).

Summer is here and there are many opportunities to gather friends and family and enjoy a barbecue meal together. Using a BBQ has an undeniable ecological footprint, but it is possible to make the most environmentally friendly choices.

Are you the type of person who prefers to cook with charcoal or propane?

Many people prefer charcoal for the distinctive taste it gives to food. However, for the same meal, using charcoal will produce 3 times more CO2. Furthermore, the burning of charcoal results in the release of fine particles to the air, which can lead to respiratory problems.

The propane BBQ is a cleaner choice for the environment and for the wallet. Since propane cooking is more efficient and faster, there is no waste of fuel. A propane BBQ cooking session can be up to 5 times less expensive than the same session using charcoal.

Whether you prefer charcoal or propane, there are some tips on how to reduce your ecological footprint this summer when BBQing:
