"WE WISH YOU A HAPPY AND SAFE SEASON AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO COLLABORATING IN THE NEW YEAR."
A few weeks ago, we had the honour to meet Rick Napolitano, who has worked as a RMX driver for over 55 years. During our time with Rick at Innocon Mavis Rd site in Mississauga (ON), we had the pleasure of hearing about his long-standing career journey.
Check out his interview below:
[Anna Salomao] Thank you for making the time to talk to us today, Rick. Your 57-year career is truly remarkable. Why don’t we start by describing your role and how long you have been working at Innocon?
[Rick Napolitano] It is my pleasure. I first started on April 14, 1967 at a company called Richvale Block and Readymix, which many years later, in 1996, was merged with a few other companies to become what we know today as Innocon. Overall, I have held many different positions throughout my career in Readymix, such as: RMX Driver, Load Operator, Spare
Batcher, and others. Truth is, I love my job as a RMX driver and I intend to keep on going a little longer.
[AS] So, you know the readymix business in and out then. That’s amazing! How did you discover your passion for driving? What do you like the most about your work?
[RN] I guess you could say that. I’ve always liked driving. In 1962, I got my first driver’s license and never stopped driving. My favourite thing about this job is to be on the road meeting new people, new faces, and new stories. Every day is different; and, of course, this job comes with a lot of responsibilities. For instance, I’m proud to say that I have never been involved in any sort of work incident - knock on wood. Overall, I enjoy working with our customers and I’m proud of the relationships I have nurtured throughout the years.
[AS] Good for you, Rick. I’m glad to hear it. Now, how would you describe the culture at Innocon?
[RN] My coworkers are like family to me, we joke around, but we respect each other. There is a very strong sense of collaboration and friendship in this yard. To be honest, I’m really proud to work at Innocon - I enjoy spending time with my coworkers, my leadership team, and doing my day-to-day job. I always get here early in the morning, so I can start my day right.
Vestilum Pretium Vestulum Elite Maenas DignissimLast month, Toufic Tabbara, Region Head, Holcim North America, visited three ECAN sites: St. Constant Cement Plant (QC) , Bath Cement Plant (ON), and St. Eustache Quarry (QC). During his visit, joined by a few ECAN ExCo members, our local operations teams had the opportunity to share their sites' experiences, ask questions, and learn more about Toufic’s business views.
"The local teams at Bath and St. Constant were very proud to walk Toufic through their sites for the first time and exchange with him. It was a very productive visit and we look forward to the next. Kudos to our people on the ground in preparing a positive experience and displaying our potential" commented Andrew Stewart, VP, Cement.

Our local sales team's efforts in presenting the advantage of the ECOPact product line recently led to a sustainable partnership with Windmill Development (real estate development).
ECOPact’s green features were the selling point and described as a must for the high profile LEED platinum Stone Abbey Residences’ residential project overlooking Rideau Canal in Old Ottawa South. Close to 3,000 m3 of ECOPact were used for an estimated reduction of 454 tons of CO2 (~40% savings).
The team also collaborated with the project’s general contractor, PCL Construction - marking our first ECOPact project with the company - to help identify 6 extra LEED credits.
“We had a big push for promoting our ECOPact brand quickly and spreading the excitement of what we are doing at Lafarge. Product knowledge meetings and lunch and learns helped generate new leads and had other GC's talking,” commented Maranda Bennett, Technical Sales Specialist. “A previous meeting with another GC helped spread the word to Windmill and provided us with the opportunity to work on the Stone Abbey project because we are able to offer a low CO2 concrete which fits into their LEED Platinum goals.”
We had the opportunity to meet with Rod Nielsen, former Yard and Shipping Supervisor/ ERT Team Leader (retired in October), Brookfield Plant, in Nova Scotia, and Wayne Hiscock, Sales & Distribution Manager, Atlantic Canada, to get to know more about their career journeys at Lafarge Canada. Check out their interviews below:
[Anna Salomao] Thank you both Rod and Wayne, for making the time to talk to us today. Let’s start by your roles and time at Brookfield Cement plant. What can you tell us about that?
[Rod Nielsen] I have been working at Brookfield for 36 years and I’ve held multiple roles, such as labour, loader operator, production relief, coordinator, maintenance planner, procurement analyst, and most recently Yard Supervisor.
[Wayne Hiscock] In my case it has been a 26-year-old journey. I started out at Albany Cartage transportation company that later on was bought by Lafarge (2009). I have held many roles as well, such as dispatcher, terminal manager, and more. For the last couple of years, I’m the Sales & Distribution Manager, Cement Atlantic.
[AS] Thanks for sharing this. How would you describe the culture and the work environment here at Brookfield?
[RN] Because we are a small plant, the staff members wear many hats. So, I’d say the teams are very cooperative, loyal, and inventive. We’re very proud of our local community and everything the plant does for them.
[WH] For me, coming from the transportation side of things, I’d say safety is paramount and right behind it comes customer satisfaction. Because of the nature of our servicetransportation - we need to look after the safety of not only our employees, but also the overall population on the highways.
[AS] What was one of your proudest moments in this business? Can you describe it?
[RN] I’d say achieving the Maintenance Planner Certification in 2004. It was a challenge and I was proud to have gotten through it and to have succeeded at the end. The main goal was to come up with a project, almost like a thesis.
[WH] I believe the successful completion of projects that we are involved in as a team are the biggest source of pride for us. For instance, the Fixed Link (Confederation Bridge) in PEI and the Sydney Tar Ponds are a couple of examples.

Jerry Bettencourt, our Product Specialist in Southwest/ Hamilton, had with Josh Fleming, Concretus owner and an ECOPact user.
A 7-min video in which Jerry summarized our product range, its performance, and positive impact on the carbon emission.
ECAN RMX Team and Holcim members from U.S., Europe, and Mexico teamed up at the Greenbuild where we promoted our brand and sustainable products & solutions to industry leaders in sustainable construction materials. Over 1,000 people visited our booth over the course of three days - our exchanges with the leaders allowed us to understand the customers’ needs, grew our network, and created a variety of sales leads.
Around 150 architects, engineers, and construction industry leaders gathered last October to discuss the future of sustainable design, material, and development. Our presence at the conference with our booth and our presentation on Building Progress for the Planet and the People, which included our entire sustainable product range, attracted a lot of attention and interest. Thanks to Pierre Garant, Stephane Pelletier and Charles Thibault, ECAN RMX Team members.
The team at Bath Cement Plant has recently invested in a new hopper (05507) to process traditional and alternative raw materials through the cement grinding process. The new equipment has also been used to process calcium carbonate, gypsum, shale, bauxite, and silica.
In order to continue to increase the consumption of other industry’s byproducts, the plant team needed reliable and versatile equipment capable of processing products with large differences in their physical properties, such as gradation and moisture, while granting minimum operator assistance.
The new hopper offers many advantages, such as better quality control of recycled byproducts, as well as saving resources and reducing carbon emissions. In addition, when it comes to safety and quality, there are several improvements: better platform access for inspection and maintenance purposes, less spillages, etc.
Finally, many people have come together and made the project possible, namely the plant’s project, quality, and maintenance teams, the local Geocycle team, and Lafarge contractors. Special shout out to Juan Bedoya, Project Coordinator, and Josh Stevenson, Maintenance Coordinator, for commissioning the project. Great teamwork!
“We get used to seeing the same equipment day in and day out without realizing the amount of effort required to install it, maintain it or upgrade it. The new hopper is a key equipment for clinker and cement production at Bath and it took the combined effort of more than 65 people from suppliers, to contractors, and employees to accomplish this replacement. Their combined ideas, knowledge, and hard work made this possible. Team performance at its best,” commented Juan Bedoya, Project Coordinator, Bath.
"Working with the new hopper will improve the efficiency of our duties. It is also much safer now with all the additional platforms and guardings around the hopper. A large improvement from the previous equipment,"said Mike Ferrel, Loader Operator, Bath. CHECK OUT THE FRENCH
Earlier this year, our ECAN RMX Sales Teams were once again successful in securing the use of ECOPact in large projects in Ontario. Two clients chose ECOPact for high-profile development projects in Collingwood because of our product’s green features (reduced carbon footprint) and performance.
Streetcar Developments utilized the product for the Harbour House Condo project. The building, inspired by Scandinavian design and 6-storeys’ high, is located in the city’s downtown waterfront and contains 130 units.
Reid's Heritage Homes used our green concrete for the Royal Windsor Condo project located in Collingwood's Balmoral Village. The building is a 5-storey resort-style condo for adult living.
Congratulations to the local sales teams for securing these impactful partnerships and a special thank you to Pamela Jack, Area Sales Representative, who was instrumental in building strong customer relationships to make it happen!
"Taking part in such high-profile builds is always rewarding for our teams, especially knowing that our products are lowering buildings’ carbon footprint and contributing to making our neighborhoods greener." - Pamela Jack

The City of Hamilton has launched a Wastewater Abatement Program allowing commercial and industrial ratepayers to apply for an assessment of the flow differential between water usage and sewer discharge. Businesses that divert a minimum of 25% of purchased potable water away from the sewer works are eligible for a rebate on their water bill. The wastewater/storm charges on the water bills could potentially be reduced to better reflect the actual use of the City’s sewer system.
After becoming aware of this program and completing formal assessments, a number of ready mix sites within HNTC are expected to qualify for this rebate. Take a look at the available programs within your various municipalities.
Big shout out to Andrew MacDonald, Area Manager – HNTC, and Ihab Meskreki, Procurement Manager, ECAN, for spearheading this program.
If you have any questions, please contact Faith Stewart, Environment & Public Affairs Manager.
The Lafarge Hamilton Ready Mix Dock site operates on leased lands owned by The Hamilton/Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA). HOPA has recently started an Environmental fund by which they support tenant driven environmental initiatives that reduce the overall environmental footprint of the port.
The Operations team and Faith Stewart, the local Environment & Public Affairs Manager, worked together to submit an application to HOPA for a project that aims to improve stormwater management while reducing municipal water usage. “We are both excited and pleased to announce the Hamilton Dock plant has been recently selected for funding. We look forward to making improvements at the site,” commented Faith Stewart.
Special thanks to David Kelly, General Manager - Southwest/ HNTC Ready Mix, and Mike Deluca, Ready Mix Operations Manager - Hamilton, Niagara & Tri-Cities (HNTC).

In addition to our usual agenda, we welcomed Ray Zahab, Inspirational Ultra-Marathon Runner and Explorer, as a guest speaker at our last town hall of 2022.
Ray has shared his remarkable experiences as an explorer and highlighted his participation in the documentary Running the Sahara. The film is a feature documentary narrated and executive produced by Academy Award® winner Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award® winner James Moll.
This powerful and inspirational film chronicles an attempt by three ultra marathoners, including Ray, to run across the entire length of Africa’s Sahara Desert, tackling not only the elements, but also unimaginable physical and emotional obstacles. Their goal is to run across six African countries, anticipating two marathons per day, for eighty days without a day off.
Ray Zahab from Canada, Charlie Engle from the United States, and Kevin Lin from Taiwan, have run together in marathons before. But this time is different. This isn't a race. It’s a grueling test of will and a chance to accomplish something that no known person has ever achieved.

After 18 months of construction, the first two deserving families have moved into their new home at the Habitat for Humanity 4-plex built in Kingston (ON). During a ceremony held at the site at the end of October, the new residents, Courtney Larocque and her two sons, Ben and James, as well as Amie Johnson and her son Eli, were each handed ceremonial keys to their new home.
Lafarge ECAN proudly donated 69 m3 of ECOPact Zero concrete to this project back in the summer of 2021 from the Kingston Ready Mix Plant. This project marked the very first use of this product in Eastern Canada. The initial mix design reduced the CO2 emissions from 20.8 tonnes to 8.5 tonnes, for a total reduction of 12.3 tonnes (59%).
For the past eight years, Sharon Wristen, Area Coordinator Recycled Aggregates - Hamilton, has been running a toy and food drive and sponsoring a family over the holidays.
In addition to sponsoring families this year, she secured a partnership with Joseph Haulage, a fleet company, with the objective to fill a dump truck with toys at the Nebo Road Aggregates site for Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization, Hamilton, Halton and Niagara areas.
So far, the company Freightliner, one of Lafarge ECAN customers, has made a donation to kick-start the drive, a true testament to Sharon’s customer relationship skills.
“This has become a holiday tradition for me and my family. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved so far in spreading the holidays’ joy!” commented Sharon Wristen.

On December 13, Cement Team members in participated in a Food Bank initiative in Hamilton. This was a great opportunity for the team to come together and pay it forward.
With the change of season that we are currently experiencing, I would like to offer a reminder about our purchasing habits - buying local and seasonal products has a positive influence not only on the environment, but also on the local economy.
In fact, this small gesture can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Preferring food grown close to home reduces the demand for food grown outside our country. These foods must be transported by land, air and sea to arrive on our plates.
• In Quebec, food travels an average of 2,500 km to get to our plate.
• Local products require much less packaging for their transportation and therefore produce less waste.
• Food grown out of season and in greenhouses not only requires chemicals and a large amount of energy, generating a higher carbon footprint, but also lacks nutrients.
Vicaire Environment and Land Coordinator, QuebecWe can all have a positive impact on the planet.
PS: Here are some winter foods that I often find in my fridge: sweet potatoes, kale, carrots, butternut squash, beets, eggs.
