Revolutions can be dramatic and might appear to happen fast. Kings beheaded, Tzars shot, Emperor's abdicating, for example - results are dramatic, but in reality, like disruptive innovation, progression is typically slow in real-time. Incremental shifts snowball into dramatic change. For instance, we often imagine the French Revolution as the quick guillotining of Louis XVI, although the revolution actually lasted over a decade and the King's execution was in year 4. As Bill Gates paraphrased Roy Amara, “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten Theyears.”cement world is developing a revolution of its own, shifting from intensely CO2 generating products to long-term sustainable ones. Today, industry players are globally focused on this goal. It is already abundantly apparent that there’s no silver bullet solution; a combination of many advances and replications will get us to NetZero. Herein lies the problem, each step on this path will be too small and “not enough” to solve the problem, but they must be celebrated nonetheless, communicated, and replicated if we want to achieve success.

The ECAN RMX Team has partnered with Fernbrook Homes and Crystal Homes to build the new NUVO Condo, an 8-storey residential building with 324 units in Oakville, Ontario. The 27,000 m3 construction project has incorporated sustainability right from the start since Sales/QC team have quoted this project with ECOPact mixes in an effort to trigger sustainability-focused conversations with the owner. ECOPact was approved by all stakeholders involved and the estimated carbon reductions are 3,240 tons of CO2. This will be the largest ECOPact project in the Southwest market area and the first ECOPact project with Fernbrook and Crystal Homes - a high profile residential project in an community.upscale

Algoma Steel, a leading Canadian producer of hot and cold rolled steel sheet and plate products, is also leading the path towards achieving Canada’s NetZero targets. With that, Algoma Steel has officially started the construction of two new state-of-the-art electric-arcfurnaces (EAF) to replace its existing blast furnace and basic oxygen steelmaking operations. The transformation is expected to reduce Algoma’s carbon emissions by approximately 70% by 2030. This $700M high-profile project is expected to be completed sometime in 2024 and has received federal funding of $420M for its sustainability benefits. This ECOPact opportunity was identified early on by the Sales/QC team. When the contractors did not see the significance of utilizing sustainable materials on this project, the local ECAN team approached the Owner directly. Educational ECOPact webinars were organized to gain buyin from the Owner, as well as highlight our potential to do more in regards to reducing embodied carbon. Ultimately, the Owner directed the contractors to consider using ECOPact.
