Dear Friends, Thank you for coming out to LAFH Awards 2014! Tonight, we celebrate the families of L.A. Family Housing (LAFH). Each family is in a different place in their journey out of homelessness. You will hear from former residents who are now proudly in permanent housing and from parents who used LAFH’s support services to find jobs or return to school. You will hear from kids who participated in LAFH’s educational and extracurricular activities to discover their talents and see the potential of their future. We understand that the crisis of 58,000 homeless individuals in Los Angeles can be overwhelming. When we encounter our homeless neighbors, we often don’t know how we can truly help them in that moment. Tonight, our call to action is simple: Don’t look away. It starts by understanding just one person’s story. Every family’s success you’ll read about in this program booklet, and those presented on stage, would not have been possible without your support. Thank you for choosing to engage. Thank you for joining us in caring about the needs in our own backyard, our Los Angeles. Thank you for giving generously.

47%

of American children who are born into poverty will remain in poverty…

Unless we do something. L.A. Family Housing (LAFH) is committed to ending the cycle of homelessness and poverty for families. When you hear our residents’ success stories tonight, you may notice the word permanent. The moment a family comes into our transitional shelter, we begin preparing them for permanent housing. But our support does not end there. We follow up with the families, ensuring the parents have the skills and resources they need to be successful, to remain housed. As we celebrate our families moving forward, we also set our sights on the broader horizon of LAFH. This year, we will open Day Street Apartments, adding 48 new units of permanent supportive housing to the community. And with the support of our elected officials and donors, LAFH will continue to invest in the future of Los Angeles. We are grateful to tonight’s Honoree, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, for his leading commitment of $1M to the Campus, a five-year plan to expand our housing and services. With this development, LAFH will bring new permanent supportive housing and a state-of-the-art, comprehensive health care clinic and community service hub to the San Fernando Valley. When you support LAFH, you are investing in a different future for Los Angeles. You are helping a family end the cycle of homelessness. And you are changing the course of a child’s life. Thank you. Prior to that, he was recognized for his pivotal scene-stealing role in Horrible Bosses, in which he supports the stars of the film as they plot to kill their bosses. Celebrating Our Residents Kevin Neal A former resident of LAFH’s transitional housing program, Kevin Neal and his kids are now in permanent housing and finally experiencing a stable family life. Their story is featured in the LAFH video shown this evening. While at LAFH, he took advantage of the employment center and is currently employed at Burlington Coat Factory in Burbank, with aspirations to move into management. He is a proud father of three young children: Kevin Elijah, Kya, and Kemari.

....................................... April Garcia A U.S. Army Veteran, April Garcia and her kids lived in LAFH’s transitional housing for two years, while they recovered from domestic abuse. During that time, LAFH staff worked closely with April to help her secure veterans benefits, allowing her to finish her college education. She is now a full-time student at L.A. Valley College, pursuing a degree in theology, and a full-time mom of three young children: Jason, Jaiden, and Joey.

....................................... Fara Valdez Fara is a freshman at Robert Fulton College Preparatory School and is one of the youngest members of the Varsity cheerleading squad. While balancing after-school practice and dance competitions on the weekends, Fara manages to keep a 4.0 grade point average and juggle several honors classes. Fara credits her success, in part, to her family’s stay at LAFH where she participated in a vibrant youth program that helped her discover her talents. She now has her own room, for the first time in her life, in a house that she shares with her family: her mom, Fara, and her siblings, Joseph, Serena, and Miracles.

Sydney M. Irmas Outstanding Humanitarian Award Zev Yaroslavsky

L.A. County Supervisor, Third District During a career in public life spanning nearly four decades, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has been at the forefront of Los Angeles County’s biggest issues, from transportation to the environment to health care to the arts. He has been a pioneering advocate for the region’s homeless population and has been instrumental in providing funding to support L.A. Family Housing’s emergency shelter and homeless services for more than 12 years.

Yaroslavsky was first elected to office in 1975, stunning the political establishment by winning the Los Angeles City Council’s coveted 5th District seat at the age of 26. In 1994, Yaroslavsky was elected to the five-member Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing a constituency of two million people. He is now serving his fifth term as the board’s Third District representative. Because of term limits, he will leave office at the close of 2014. In the area of social and human services, Yaroslavsky has launched a series of groundbreaking initiatives that have measurably improved life for individuals and families on the margins of society. For example, he is bringing innovative school-based health clinics to largely working-class neighborhoods of the San Fernando Valley, where many residents are living below the poverty line and rarely seek medical attention. Yaroslavsky also has been credited with helping to restore the lives of the region’s chronically homeless, through his support and funding of permanent supportive housing for hundreds of people who’ve been identified as severely mentally ill and most likely to die on the streets. LA Family Housing shares Supervisor Yaroslavsky’s vision for a comprehensive approach to meet many of our region’s greatest needs. As such, when LAFH proposed our new Campus plan to the Supervisor, he overwhelmingly supported our effort with a $1 million commitment to develop the new Campus at L.A. Family Housing. With this development, LAFH brings new permanent supportive housing and a state-of-the-art, comprehensive health care clinic and community service hub to the San Fernando Valley. For Supervisor Yaroslavsky’s tireless efforts on behalf of the chronically homeless, and his deep partnership with L.A. Family Housing, we are proud to honor him with the Sydney M. Irmas Outstanding Humanitarian Award. This award honors the memory of one of L.A. Family Housing’s first leaders and champions of the homeless in Los Angeles, and represents the legacy of the Irmas family. As Supervisor Yaroslavsky retires from public service at the end of 2014, we honor his tremendous legacy in ending homelessness for hundreds of families.

APRIL

Jason (age 9), Jaiden (age 5), Joey (age 4) April served in the US Army for 11 years. But while she was protecting our country, no one was protecting her. One night, April took her children and finally escaped from her abusive husband despite having no place to go. April felt terrible for taking her boys out of their house and home, but she had to protect them, too. The family stayed in several shelters and spent nights sleeping in their car. After school, she would let the kids play all day at a park to keep their spirits up, then drive them around until they fell asleep in the car. The kids didn’t realize they were homeless.

When April and her sons came to LAFH, she finally found stability and support. During the two years her family lived at LAFH, April received counseling for PTSD and participated in the parenting program. She regained her courageous spirit and determined she would become selfsufficient. Today, they have been in permanent housing for over a year, and April has returned to school to finish her degree. LAFH helped her secure benefits she was due from the Veterans Administration, and now she is saving up every last penny to one day buy her own home.

MARLON & PATRICIA

Arely (age 6), Marlon (age 5), Laylannie (age 3 months) After spending time in jail for his gang activity, Marlon knew he had to make different choices. When he got out, he reconnected with his wife and kids, but they had lost everything during his time in jail and were living in a van. Marlon could not return to his old neighborhood where he still had active gang relations, and he lost his family’s support due to his previous lifestyle. When Marlon came to LAFH 8 months ago, he was grateful for a new start and to know that his family was now safe. Marlon immediately

connected with LAFH employment services and is pursuing an electrical apprenticeship with hopes of building a career as an electrician. He has already become a leader to other LAFH residents as a member of the Resident Council. His wife, Patricia, has been connected to mental health services to treat depression, and she is becoming an active and engaged mother. Their kids are reengaged in school, and the family is taking steps to move into their own apartment by the end of this year.

FARA

Fara (age 15), Joesph (age 13), Serena (age 8), Miracles (age 6) Instability and homelessness began for Fara the day she had her first daughter (also named Fara.) Her husband lost his job, and the teenage parents could not make ends meet. For years, the cycle continued until they eventually split up. Her husband took the oldest children and bounced around from shelter to shelter. Meanwhile, Fara survived with the two babies living in a car for over a year. Finally, Fara reunited with her eldest children and established a safe home for her family during

the two years they lived at LAFH. Newly single and experiencing severe depression during those turbulent years, Fara received mental health support and life skills coaching so she could build a new life for her kids. Meanwhile, her children finally felt safe and stable for the first time in their lives. At LAFH, they came out of their shells through the theater and crafts workshops offered by volunteers. Today, the kids are excelling in school, and they do not see homelessness in their future. They have been in their own home for three years now.

GARY

Jazmyn (age 10) Gary grew up in an LA neighborhood controlled by gangs, but he always managed to stay away from them, working at an auto shop as a teenager. He even reached out to other kids in the neighborhood to give them work and keep them off the streets. With dreams of traveling the world and a fulfilling career path, Gary joined the army but eventually had to leave his dreams to take care of an ailing father. After that, life started to spiral downward for Gary, and while he managed to avoid gang life, he could not escape the grips of substance abuse

and eventually became homeless. When Gary came to LAFH five months ago, he was making changes in his life and LAFH helped him reunite with his daughter, Jazmyn. Now, they are happily together and flourishing. Gary is working part-time as a substance abuse counselor and even started an AA group for other LAFH residents. He is also a proud stage father who takes Jazmyn to her Native American dance competitions. They both eagerly await permanent housing as the next step in their journey.

LOIS and JENNIFER

Tammy (age 12), Dorselene (age 10) With her infectious smile and strong determination, it is no surprise that Lois is the consummate caretaker in her family. For years, she was constantly back and forth to the doctor with her oldest daughter who suffered from a disease in the legs, confining her to braces for most of her childhood. At the same time, Lois’ mother was dying of breast cancer, and Lois moved into her mother’s home to provide full-time care when her mother passed away. Lois’ partner, Jennifer, was a source of emotional support for her, but both women were facing financial struggles and ultimately became homeless.

Now together as a loving family at LAFH, Lois and Jennifer are building a stable life for the girls. Once her daughters settled into their school routine, Lois quickly got a job through LAFH’s job fair as a van driver. Her daughter Tammy, who was in a wheelchair when they arrived, recovered from surgery and is now walking without a problem. She is a talented singer, and both girls recently received academic achievement awards. They hope to move into their own apartment this summer.

KEVIN

Kevin Elijah (age 6), Kya (age 4), Kemari (age 3) When Kevin received custody of his kids, he was thrilled to be able to keep his family together. But then the reality sank in: he had no home for them. With no other options, Kevin moved his family from motel to motel, but eventually ended up on Skid Row. It was no place for kids. When Kevin called LA County and got connected to LAFH, his situation quickly turned around. LAFH placed Kevin’s family in permanent housing in less than two weeks, and Kevin got a full-time job in retail at Burlington Coat

Factory that allowed him a flexible schedule. Now, he’s able to cook for his kids, walk them to school, and fix his daughter’s hair every morning. He has been in his own apartment for nine months now and continues to receive supportive services from LAFH as he stabilizes his family. Kevin remembers the pain in his own childhood when he was taken away from his mother by child services and is determined to create a different future for his kids: one where the family stays together and breaks the cycle of homelessness.
