Former pupils support their school Two members of the Giyani High School’s old boys’ club set a fine example when they recently donated soccer kits to the school. Dr Thembani Mathonsi, a medical practitioner, and Mr Benny Makasani, a town planner and businessman, visited the school and surprised the pupils with their unselfish donation to the school where they martriculated.
In a short address Mathonsi said the donation will be extended so that uniforms and shoes for disadvantaged learners could be bought. “We want to set an example and motivate other former pupils, as well as the school’s current generation who could be in a position to assist the school in years to come,” he said. According to the headmaster of the school, Mr Edwin Chavalala, Giyani High is forty years old and many things have changed. He said infra-
structure needs to be improved. “If everybody that attended this school since 1973 were to come back and does something here, this school would benefit a lot. I urge pupils to remember where they come from, once they become successful,” he said. Greater Giyani Municipality Mayor Pat Hlungwani applauded the two gentlemen for their contribution and willingness to accept a social responsibility. He said that if everybody did what the two ex-pupils did, it would be much easier for government to bring service delivery to the people. “These gentlemen did not sit back and criticised government. Instead they set out to do something that would make a difference in the society” he said. He also urged pupils to study hard to achieve their dreams, saying education was the only treasure that “goes with the owner,” and that pupils should not rely on what their parents possess to secure their future. — Orlando Chauke orlando@bulletin.us.com
