5 African males were arrested for contravening the lock down regulations and failing to confine themselves to their homes in Bolobedu South. The men were arrested in Georges Valley during a sting operation at the informal settlement in that area. The operation was led by Tzaneen SAPS Col Baloyi, Col Mabasa, Col Shikwambana, Sgt Nkhwashu and various support sector commanders. During this operation, which was held on Sunday, 49 marijuana plants were uprooted at the Georges Valley informal settlement and the men arrested. They were issued with J535’s for failing to confine themselves at their homes in Thapane and Morutji as per the nationwide lock down regulations. Also this week, Tzaneen police led by Capt Sekoto, accompanied by the SANDF members led by Lance Corporal Tshik-

ovha , started conducting operations to check for non-compliance at Bolobedu South villages. These villages included Lerejeni, Mopye, Relela, Motupa, Kubyana, Mapitula and Sethagoni. In Tzaneen, the arrival of the SANDF vehicles caused quite a stir among the locals who noted the armed soldiers patrolling roadblocks in and around Tzaneen town. During the Daily Drive with Joe show, viewers first noticed the military transport vehicles parked in the parking area of Ben Vorster high school, last week. Bulletin was informed that the SANDF had made their base of operations at the High School and that they were using the school hall, two classrooms and an auditorium as their barracks and strategic planning sessions. They will not be living in the dormitory rooms. In the last week, there were no military patrols and the army had seemingly disappeared. Later we discovered that the

platoon, which was sent to Tzaneen from 7SAI in Phalaborwa, had in fact been sent to Burgersfort to assist in crowd control in that area. They arrived back in Tzaneen on Monday. There have been armed forces soldiers at each of the three roadblocks that cover the entrance to Tzaneen town. They were stationed alongside traffic officers and local police members. However, the moment the sun goes down, all three of these roadblocks cease to operate. In fact, we have it from reliable sources that there are no functioning roadblocks anywhere between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit at nighttime. This, is however, not surprising.

Samaritan accused of assault ■ Joe Dreyer

What appears to be a clear example of gross misconduct by certain members of the Tzaneen police force has led to four local men now facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) after one of them attempted to rush to the aid of a stranger. On Wednesday afternoon Johan was sitting on his patio with his fiancé and his mother when they heard a vehicle speeding down the R71 near the entrance to Tzaneen. The sound was followed by two loud bangs which Johan recognized as the bursting of vehicle tyres. In his police statement he noted that he rushed down to the road to assist what he thought could have been injured occupants of the vehicle. Johan asked his fiancé to call for help in case it was an accident and ambulance service were needed. He then jumped into his own vehicle and rushed towards where he last heard the sound. “Upon arrival at the scene, I noticed the vehicle standing in the left-hand lane of the carriageway facing Tzaneen. The driver was sitting in the middle of the road behind his vehicle,” said Johan in his statement. “I put on my vehicle’s hazards and from inside the cab I asked the gentleman if he was okay. He replied with “f*k off to where you came from you white sh*t”! and I realized that the man was visibly under the influence.” Johan then helped the man up and seated him on the pavement alongside the road. He then said that he went to the man’s vehicle to make sure that it was secure (park break on and ignition switched off ). When he turned around the man was allegedly back on his feet and moving towards him with his fists up. Johan said he moved back to his vehicle to get away, but the man hit him against the back of his head. “I asked him to move away and go back to the pavement until the help arrived, but he kept coming at me and so I hit him with my vehicle’s door. This pushed him to the ground, and I climbed into

my vehicle. The man stood up and was extremely aggressive. He started hitting me again and tore off my shirt.” A security company arrived on scene, and the aggressive suspect allegedly jumped back into his damaged vehicle and attempted to run over two of the response guards. He then turned the vehicle on Johan who ran in behind a palm tree at the nearby Garden Centre. The suspect then spun away in the direction of Tzaneen and Johan and the security patrol gave chase. Arriving at the man’s residence in town, another local security company and a police van were waiting. The man then allegedly drove into his yard and started pelting the vehicles of the security companies with bricks. Johan and a few of the witnesses said that initially a police officer who arrived on the scene, refused to arrest the man saying, “he is in his house.” The man was eventually detained by one of the security companies and loaded into the back of the police van and taken to the police station. The security officers and Johan followed. Once at the police station, the suspect allegedly stated that he had never left his house and that the four men had come into his property and attacked him. He also alleged that, his son was attacked with pepper spray. Johan and the security patrolmen all denied this. The police detective however seemed to take the side of the suspect. It is alleged that the suspect gave his statement and lay charges of assault against all four the men which resulted in the police wanting to detain them. The suspect allegedly paid R1 000 bail and was sent home. They were all charged with two cases of assault GBH, and each man had to pay R1 000 bail. The following day Bulletin met with the men at the Police station where they were requested to meet with the investigating officer and had to again write out their statements. At the police station they were told by the police detective that they had to pay their bail or they would be

locked up in the cells. The bail was paid and the men were placed in the police holding cells while it was being processed. They were set free approximately three hours later. The owner of one of the private security companies was called into the police station this morning and also charged with two counts of Assault GBH related to this incident and let off on a warning. This unfortunate incident and the reaction by the members of the police, has severely strained the relationship between the local SAPS and all local private security companies. In solidarity with their comrades, the local private security organizations have all withdrawn their assistance and support from police patrols and activities including their participation at the roadblocks during the lock down and their presence on all WhatsApp groups. “The conduct by the police officers in this investigation and on the night in question borders on corruption and I am definitely not going to leave this matter here. I have been accused of a serious crime because I tried to help a stranger. The stranger assaulted me, swore at me, crashed his vehicle while speeding and in my opinion visibly under the influence of alcohol, tried to run me and a security officer over with his vehicle, damaged two security vehicles by throwing bricks at them, and then lied in a sworn statement. Why am I being treated like a criminal when I only tried to help my fellow man?” At the time of going to print investigations were continuing and all of the men involved in the incident have sought legal counsel. Bulletin has seen surveillance footage obtained from two businesses in the area of the incident on the afternoon in question. We also have photographs of Johan’s injuries sustained in the alleged assault. We have also been informed that the matter has been escalated to national level. More on this story as it unfolds. *The name of the accused has been changed to protect him from further victimization.

Wine - export yes, transport no - Here are all the new lock down regulations

Bheki Fedora Cele

F A R

Joe Dreyer

In a briefing on Thursday afternoon (yesterday, 16th of April) by members of the national command council on Covid-19, the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the Justice and Correctional Services minister, Ronald Lamola, attempted to offer the nation clarity on the regulations pertaining to the extension of the nationwide lock down. The first phase of the lock down ended yesterday and ushered in the second phase after President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the quarantine period by a further 14 days last week. This was because of the increase in the Coronavirus cases recorded nationwide. The State of Disaster regulations, which were gazetted on the 18th of March this year, have seen many changes (three amendments so far), and still more are set to come as the leaders of the country get to grips with the current Covid-19 emergency. Dlamini-Zuma made it very clear in her address during the televised briefing, that, as the situation “evolves”, more regulations and ministerial directives might become necessary. **Editor’s note: This all sounds too Orwellian for comfort. It is almost as if these ministers are enjoying the power they have over the lifestyles of the people of this nation, a little too much. Either that, or the existing Disaster Management Act was truly lacking in clear directives which prompted the current cabinet to systematically rewrite it? Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu, issued a directive which explains the procedures and protocols which are to be observed and followed by the non-profit, faith-based and community-based organisations involved in running facilities for the vulnerable. These include substance abuse treatment centres and halfway houses, child and youth care centres, shelters for the victims of crime and violence, old age homes and frail care facilities, residential facilities for persons with disabilities, community- and home-based respite care facilities, ‘community nutrition development’ centres, services related to the ‘social relief of distress, drop-in centres and cooperatives. This “order” focuses on measures aimed at enforcing social distancing – among other things by prohibiting visits and the release of facility residents. It is not clear what the temporary homeless shelter at Jetty 3 in Tzaneen qualifies as, but by all accounts, one would assume it would be a ‘halfway house’? If that is the case, then the Jetty 3 facility is currently in breach of these regulations as the homeless people housed there have been seen exiting the Jetty 3 grounds regularly. Individuals not affiliated to any political institution, and not registered with any essential service organization, claiming to be volunteers, have been seen at the site every day since the start of the shelter, even

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

enjoying some of the meals being prepared for the homeless. There have even been instances where the “officials” manning the site, were spotted enjoying a braai on their camping chairs. This morning we counted 14 unmarked vehicles parked next to the tents on the grounds. Other amendments to the lock down regulations that would be of interest to our readers include the following: SASSA grants As of May, the monthly payments of social grants and pensions will be staggered over a few days in order to protect the disabled and the elderly from the hordes of people who rush to the payment centres at month end. It would appear as though government learnt their lesson from the royal abortion which was the April pay outs during the start of the lock down. As from the month of May 2020 disability and Older Persons Grants will be paid from the 4th day of the month. All other grants will be paid from the 6th of every month. Some older persons use one card to also receive child support and foster child grants. In such cases they will be able to access all linked grants from the 4th of every month. Once the money is in the account, it will remain there until it is needed. “Money deposited into your account is safe and will not be taken back if not used. There is no need to rush to withdraw cash on the first day we deposit it into your account. The SASSA card can be used as a debit card to pay for purchases, therefore it is not necessary to withdraw cash and thereafter purchase goods with the cash,” SASSA CEO, Busisiwe Memela, pleaded with beneficiaries. Funerals Movement between a metropolitan or district area, or province, by a person wishing to attend a funeral shall only be permitted if the person wishing to attend the funeral is a spouse or partner of the deceased; child of the deceased, whether biological, adopted or stepchild; child-in-law of the deceased; parent of the deceased whether biological, adopted or stepparent; sibling, whether biological, adopted or stepbrother or sister of the deceased; grandparent of the deceased, or a person closely affiliated to the deceased. “Closely affiliated” in this sense is explained as a person with parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the deceased; or a person who had developed a significant relationship based on caregiving, psychological or emotional attachment to the deceased. Funerals are still restricted to only 50 people. Night vigils are still not allowed. You will still need a permit to attend the funeral and this can be obtained from a magistrate or SAPS station commander. Cargo and transport The export of wine is permitted alongside agricultural exports, but it still illegal to transport alcohol. This has had the unintended consequence of allowing the transportation of wine for exporting,

Gwede Mantashe

while it was still illegal to transport alcohol. “The movement of wines destined for export markets is one area we will review. In a nutshell, we are no longer allowing movement of wines,” explained transport minister, Fikile Mbalula. “In relation to movement of minibus taxis, our law enforcement counterparts flagged a critical challenge that once taxis complete their morning run between 05:00 and 10:00, these taxis park at the rank, resulting in a mass gathering of drivers at these ranks which is prohibited. These taxis should be parked at places where they ordinarily park overnight and drivers should return to their homes to avoid indirect gatherings. We will attend to this matter immediately and revise the relevant Directions.” **Editor’s note: Does this directive apply for taxis based in the Independent State of Claude Wheatley? How will these rules be policed? Will the traffic department finally make their presence known in this area and reprimand their employees for breaking the law? The former sports minister turned logistics law maker continued by saying that all cargo will now be allowed to be moved. “At the beginning of the lockdown, movement of cargo on our roads, air and at sea was limited to essential cargo. We subsequently revised this to allow movement of all cargo.” This has brought about another series of unintended “challenges” it seems. Now that all cargo is allowed to move, the consequence of this movement is that inbound cargo gets stuck at port, as some businesses that are required to enable the movement of this cargo to their final destination, are not operational during the lockdown. “Our ports of entry are not designed to function as warehouses for inbound cargo and this then creates a blockage at port. This matter will be addressed in a Direction that will be finalized in consultation with our Trade and Industry counterparts.” Transporting people Strangely, the restrictions on the movements of employees of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) have also been reduced. It seems strange that IEC employees are deemed essential workers during a state of emergency. Bus services and e-hailing services shall not carry more than 50% of the licensed capacity. Taxi services shall not carry more than 70% of the licensed capacity and private vehicles shall not carry more than 60% of the licensed capacity. (It is unclear to this writer what 60% means. Does it mean two adults and a child, or two and a half adults – in which case two people measuring 1.9m in height and one person measuring 1.6m in height?) If a person who needs to conduct an essential service has no means to get to work, you as the employer must make a plan to transport that person. In this instance however, the rules say you are not allowed to exceed more than 50% of the vehicle’s licensed capacity. (Equally confusing. What

Fikile Mr Fix Mbalula

if your only way to organize transport for your essential worker is by paying for his or her taxi fare?) Retail Products for the care of babies and toddlers have been deemed essential items. This means that any goods including nappies, baby clothes, blankets, towels and other essential accessories for newborns, infants, and toddlers up to 36 months old can be sold in retail stores everywhere. “We have been in contact with the CEO’s of the large retailers, who have undertaken to sell these products at prices which simply cover their basic costs of production and distribution for the period of the lockdown,” said Sidwell Medupe, spokesperson for the department of trade and industry. Retail stores selling essential goods are prohibited from selling any other goods. Stores selling hardware products and vehicle components must maintain a register of persons buying essential goods listed in Part A of Annexure B, and must keep a record of a signed declaration, which corresponds substantially with Form 4 of Annexure C by the buyer of goods attesting that the goods are essential goods as defined in the Regulations. Grocery stores and wholesale produce markets, spaza shops, informal fruit and vegetable sellers and “langanas”, are now considered essential services. In respect of spaza shops and informal fruit and vegetable traders, written permission from a municipal authority to operate is required. Provided that all valid permits for spaza shops and informal fruit and vegetable traders issued before or during the declared national state of disaster and which fall due during the said period, will remain valid for a period of one month after the end of the national state of disaster. Essential Goods Essential goods are defined as any food product, including non-alcoholic beverages, animal food and any chemicals or ancillary products used in the production of food. Toilet Paper, sanitary pads, sanitary tampons, condoms, hand sanitiser, disinfectants, soap, alcohol for industrial use, household cleaning products, and personal protective equipment. Products for the care of babies and toddlers. Personal toiletries, including haircare, body and face washes, roll-ons, deodorants and toothpaste. Hardware, components and supplies required by any qualified tradespersons solely for the purpose of emergency repairs at residential homes, or components and supplies required by any entity engaged in the provision of essential services for any project related to the provision of water, electricity or other essential services. Components for vehicles under-going emergency repairs where such vehicle is used by a person engaged in essential services work. No, you still cannot buy smokes or alcohol legally (though this has not deterred the guys in the CBD from selling ‘loose draws’ to passing motorists without fear of being arrested).

Ranger Raptor an off-road beast

Roelof de Jonge

The Ford Ranger Raptor with its Ford Performance DNA at its core was created by Ford to produce an entirely new breed of off-road vehicle that pushes the limits in technology, innovation and driving excitement. Bulletin editor Joe Dryer was smiling from ear to ear after he experienced some of the excitement the Ranger Raptor had to offer during the live daily drive shows sponsored by the BB Motor Group in Tzaneen. The Ranger Raptor set new benchmarks in high-speed and off-road capability. The commanding presence delivered by the ultimate Ranger’s imposing dimensions and extreme styling is supported by a unique Ford Performance chassis optimised for high-speed off-road driving and go-anywhere capability. Just by looking at the Ranger Raptor, you know this off-road pickup means business. It has an imposing stance, with 51mm taller ride height, 283mm ground clearance, 150mm wider front and rear track and 850mm wading depth than its Ranger off-road siblings, lets you know that this is a serious off-road performance machine. With a 32.5-degree approach angle, and ramp-over and departure angles of 24 degrees, provides for some impressive go-anywhere capabilities. The front fenders are made from durable composite materials for exciting off-road adventures, while the bumper includes LED fog lamps with air-curtain ducts, which reduce air resistance. The flared shape of the fenders has been designed to accommodate the long-travel suspension and BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres were specifically developed for the Ranger Raptor. Stepping inside Ranger Raptor, and you enter a world that it is unmistakably Ford Performance orientated. The sports seats are uniquely designed and trimmed in Technical Suede for maximum grip, providing optimum support during high-performance off-road driving, while also providing exceptional comfort when cruising in town. The steering wheel features perforated leather hand grip sections paired with Raptor DNA lightweight magnesium paddle shifters for crisp gear changes. The Raptor logo is debossed into the spoke bezel of the steering wheel and a motorsport-inspired “on-centre” marker, a red stripe at the top-middle of the steering wheel, gives the driver the confidence to know where the wheels are pointing. Of course, it’s not enough to just look aggressive, a vehicle that looks good needs to deliver great performance and responsiveness too. The Ranger Raptor is equipped with the new 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine that delivers a maximum of 157kW of power and a massive 500Nm of torque. This innovative power plant offers both high performance and efficiency, thanks to its combination of a small high-pressure turbo and a large low-pressure turbo that work to provide optimal performance throughout the engine speed range. The Ranger Raptor is equipped with Ford’s all-new 10-speed

automatic transmission, which is created with high-strength steel, aluminium alloys and composites to optimize durability and weight. Unique to the Ranger Raptor are steering wheel-mounted magnesium paddle shifters that give the driver the ultimate control over the gear change points and driving dynamics. In keeping with its outstanding off-road capabilities, the Ranger Raptor is equipped with an integrated heavy-duty tow bar, which offers a cleaner appearance than the underslung version used on the standard Ranger, while significantly improving the vehicle’s departure angle. The design incorporates two easily accessible heavy-duty recovery hooks and gives the Ranger Raptor a 2 500kg towing capacity. To further underline its impressive off-road credentials, the Ranger Raptor’s Terrain Management System (TMS) includes an exciting Baja mode, inspired by Mexico’s famous Baja Desert Rally, which enables ultra-responsive, high-speed off-road performance. In this mode, vehicle systems like Traction Control are pared back to allow spirited off-road driving without intervention from the vehicle’s on-board systems. Gear selection is optimised for maximum performance, and the mapping will hold gears longer and downshift more aggressively. The Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) is also linked to the TMS, providing varying levels of assistance and responsiveness according to the specific drive mode selected. The TMS is derived from the system used in the Ford Everest 4x4 and incorporates a full range of drive modes including Normal, Sport, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/ Sand and Rock. To better handle the crunching jumps and wild rides of your offroad pursuits, the Ranger Raptor boasts Position Sensitive Damping (PSD) shock absorbers exclusively manufactured by FOX for this model. They provide higher damping forces at extremes for unparalleled off-road capability, and lower damping forces in more moderate conditions for a smoother ride on-road. Front wheel travel is increased by 32 percent, and rear travel by 22 percent compared to the standard Ranger. The Ranger Raptor is loaded with safety and convenience features that make it suitable for both on and off-road driving. A host of driver-assist technologies are available at the push of a button, incorporating unique design features tailored for the Ranger Raptor. And with safety being a number one priority, the Ranger Raptor is equipped with Ford Stability Control (FSC), incorporating Roll Stability Control (RSC) that was specifically developed for Ford’s sport utility vehicle (SUV) range, and has been adapted for this exciting new Ford Performance model. It utilises clever sensors to anticipate and minimise oversteer, understeer and rollover incidents. All Ford Rangers come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year or 120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year or unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year or unlimited km corrosion warranty. A six-year or 90 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals.

Granny’s Grumbles - THE INSTANT LAWN DISASTER

I have been blessed with a talent for thinking up all sorts of ideas which I think are going to make me into a very wealthy lady. Most of them have fallen flat but one particular idea (in retrospect) was I suppose quite funny in spite of being a financial flop. I had retired from the mine and was hoping to be able to open my own nursery, but whilst mulling over the pros and cons I had a fortunate phone call from a friend in Letsitele who told me she was going into the instant lawn business and since she needed somebody to pass the word around and knowing that I had a small backyard nursery thought I would be just the person. I couldn’t believe my good luck. Only two days previously a young widow who was moving into a new flat on 31st December had asked if I could sort out a garden for her before she moved in. The flat was part of a complex of four garden flats and although she could only move in at the end of December she had b even given the keys and told she could start moving some of her

stuff and also start thinking about her garden. Now I had seen the flat and it was one of those back-to-front places where you parked and walked in through the back door. She wanted the back area to be sorted instantly as she was expecting relatives from overseas in February. It was the 10th December – I spoke to her about the lawn and she was ecstatic. I phoned Anne (the lawn lady) – told he I was going to measure up the next day and would be coming to collect the grass the day after that. I organised two labourers with the necessary tools to level and rake the area, remove rocks and have everything ready. That same night I phoned Anne and told her I would be leaving home at five and hoped to be at her farm by 6.30. No problem – she would have the lawn cut and rolled for me. And having given her the measurements she said it would fit into my Mazda Rustler with no problem at all. I was thrilled – I love it when a plan comes together. I arrived at her farm just after 6.30 and was informed that there was a slight problem… no labour. However she hastened to add …she would do the cutting and I could roll it and put it in the bakkie. She would show me how to pack it. By the time the job was finished I was covered in bits of grass and dirt so we agreed that I should go to the house for a clean-up and a cup of coffee. Just as I had my first sip the heavens opened up and the rain absolutely hosed down. An hour later it was still pelting down and I said I had to go. Visions of my quote floated before my eyes - I had quoted for the actual lawn and labour - nothing else – had even forgotten about the petrol. Anne tried to dissuade me – said that by now the instant lawn would be so saturated that the bakkie would probably have a problem – the weight would be double what it had originally been. I was sure she was exaggerating so ran to the vehicle and took off – I slithered around on the dirt road that led from the farm and realised once I hit the main road that Anne had been right. Apart from the fact that I could

barely see the road due to the non-stop torrent the bakkie was becoming more and more difficult to handle. As I approached Gravelotte there was a downhill slope and I heard what sounded like hundreds of litres of water sloshing around in the back. I knew I had to find shelter so pulled into a covered petrol station, I indicated to the petrol attendant that I didn’t need fuel but was sheltering from the rain. “Eish madam – you have put a very heavy load on this small bakkie”. I tried to explain but with very little success – I ended up sheltering from the rain for more than two hours with the tailgate down. I eventually arrived at the intended home of the lawn well after two o’clock to find the sun blazing down and two annoyed labourers who had anticipated that I would be ready to start the job just after eight. They should be happy – instead of one day’s pay they would now be working for another day. “Let’s get started – take the rolls of grass and lay them out” Unfortunately the rolls had been so beaten about by the nonstop rain that they were no longer in rolls but started breaking up as they were removed. It was like trying to sort out a jigsaw puzzle but the gardeners got the idea and we had managed to lay out about one third of the grass when I suddenly realised that it was close to their knock-off time and since it was very hot in Phalaborwa - no rain here -I would have to water the laid out lawn. Where on earth was the garden tap – couldn’t find one anywhere so went to ask the maid. It turned out there was no outside tap – so how could anybody water their garden or clean their car? The maid suggested that I go and speak to the builder who was in charge of the construction site which was about 50 metres from the front of the flat complex. We had a rather heated exchange in which he pointed out that he had not drawn up the plans – he was merely the builder – he even hauled the plans out for me to look over. Indeed there were no taps and he confessed that he had thought it rather odd

himself. He offered to lend me a watering can and I spent half an hour going backwards and forwards to the kitchen to water the laid out grass. That night I poured out my heart to my ever-loving spouse and said I thought I was going to make a large loss on this job, He had been an instructor in the army for years and his favourite saying was (and still is) ‘Preparation and Planning” so I didn’t get much sympathy from him. I also phoned my widowed friend regarding my problems – seemed like she hadn’t noticed there was no outside tap. She told me I could buy a roll of hosepipe with accessories and attach it to her kitchen tap. I won’t bore anybody with the story of attaching a hosepipe to a kitchen tap – it came adrift and the kitchen was under water much to the maid’s horror. I turned to my builder and asked if I could once again borrow his watering can, plus a wheelbarrow and some river sand to fill in the gaps between what should have been a neat and orderly lawn. He smiled and told me with a grin that he had been told to put in a garden tap the following morning as his boss had not noticed the omission in the plans. I thanked him although I was already thinking that this would now mean I would have spent three days on a job for which I had quoted one day. The maid and I had become quite friendly. The next day when I went to see if the outside tap had indeed been installed she told me confidentially that the widow was going on two weeks leave and only coming back after Christmas so the two of us would be seeing quite a lot of each other when I came to water the lawn. My friendly widow actually thought that I was going to water the lawn while she was sunning herself in Durbs. And is there a happy ending to this story – I guess the happy ending is that the widow was thrilled with her lawn and Anne got orders from the other three flat owners. I made a serious loss but I did learn one big thing which was that contingency is a very important part of a quote.

Mazda3 sets the tone at World Car Awards ■

Roelof de Jonge

The Mazda3 which Bulletin Editor Joe Dreyer drove with last week, courtesy of BB Mazda Tzaneen, during one of his live daily drives on Facebook to update the folks what is going on in and around Tzaneen, was shortly thereafter announced as the winner of 2020 World Car Design of the Year award, one of the special awards of the annual World Car Awards (WCA). Crowning Mazda’s centenary celebrations this year, the Mazda3 has won the 2020 World Car Design of the Year award, one of the special categories of the World Car Awards (WCA). The Mazda3 is in fact the second Mazda to have won the World Car Design of the Year, following the Mazda MX-5 in 2016. Mazda which has enjoyed many successes at the World Car Awards adjudicated by an 86-member jury of automotive journalists from 25 countries. The Mazda2 won overall in 2008, and in 2016 the current-generation MX-5 was the first car ever to win both the World Car of the Year award and a second category, the World Car Design of the Year award. Editor Dreyer was in awe, like with the electronic handbrake, about the unique and premium segment standard features the new Mazda3 has to offer. The perfectly stitched black leather seats welcome passengers to a new world of how Mazda cars of the future are set to evolve. The sporty seats, thick leather steering wheel and short shifting six speed manual gearbox adds to the sporty appeal of the new Mazda3. But here is why Mazda has been reaping the rewards for their new design approach of it cars. Introduced in 2010, Mazda’s unique Kodo design philosophy and its ability to breathe vitality into a car has been the driving force behind the multiple award-winning styling of the current Mazda range. Launched in 2019, the new Mazda3 was the first vehicle to showcase the latest developments in the company’s ground-breaking Kodo design language, less-is-more artistic approach inspired by the purest traditions of Japanese art and the beauty of space between objects.

SHOP LOCAL. EAT LOCAL. READ LOCAL. SPEND LOCAL.

Only through hundreds of hours of painstaking clay sculpting and painting work has it been possible to hone the Mazda3’s unique design that creates subtle undulations of light and shadows gliding over the car’s smooth body. In South Africa, the line-up of the Mazda3 comprises six derivatives in the Hatch category, and six derivatives for the Sedan category. A well-equipped vehicle right from the entry model, all the Mazda3 models feature the 8.8-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment screen, giving you access to features like Apple Carplay™ and Android Auto™. Also, standard is an all-new three-way layout eight-speaker sound system from the Active model, and the BOSE 12-speaker layout from the Individual model. Other Standard includes Seven-inch TFT reconfigurable gauge cluster display Bluetooth connectivity Remote keyless entry Push-button ignition Auto door lock Auto headlights and wipers Electronic parking brake knee air bags Two USB audio ports. This list of standard features elevates the new Mazda3 to premium

status. The World Car Design of the Year category, and the corresponding award, are meant to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style. “It is a fantastic achievement to win this highly coveted award in a category that faces competition from all sectors of the industry. Mazda designers are passionately working to express Japanese beauty and form in all Mazda vehicles. The Mazda3 is a youthful vehicle, it can also accommodate a family, and it is one of the most stylish cars in its segment. Winning this award is proof of that”, said Craig Roberts, Managing Director of Mazda Southern Africa.

Navara Stealth a refined bakkie of note â–

Roelof de Jonge

Modelled on the tough-as-nails Nissan Navara luxury edition, the Navara Stealth pickup comes with several design updates to make it an even more rugged, redefined version of the iconic pickup. The standard silver and chrome detailing on the exterior give way to sleek, black trims while newly added orange accents on the grill and front bumper, side mirrors and side steps. A roll-bar, side steps and black alloy wheels completes the picture. This two-tone colouration is carried through into the interior, with seats featuring black leather side bolsters and orange material inserts and stitching which both contrast and complement one another to give the cabin a strong, modern feel. The Navara comes in two-wheel drive and fourwheel drive configuration featuring the Navara twin turbo engine with 140kW power and 450Nm torque. The engine is coupled to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. A five-link coil rear suspension further optimizes the unique driving experience the Navara range and especially the Navara Stealth has to offer. The Navara Stealth comes with an array of Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, geared at moving Nissan customers towards safer and more sustainable driving. The Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies that features in the new Navara Stealth include, the Intelligent Key System, the Intelligent 4x4 System which assists drivers in smooth cornering by adjusting power output to the front and rear wheels, and Hill Start Assist.
