Seloba suspension overruled ■ Jeff Jackson The controversial spokesperson for the Limpopo Government, Phuti Seloba, received four months’ salary as compensation after his suspension was declared illegal and unfair by the General Public Service Sectoral Bargaining Council (GPSSC) on Friday. Seloba was suspended in November last year (with full pay) after he was accused of sharing sensitive information about the Limpopo Premier, Stanley Matabatha, with EFF provincial chairperson Jossey Buthane, since 2017. Buthane then posted these allegations over social media which included the statement that Seloba told him that premier Matabatha would often miss appointments or meetings because of overindulgence in alcohol. Another allegation was that Matabatha went on an international trip accompanied by a personal bodyguard and when he boarded a connecting flight, the bodyguard was nowhere to be seen. The allegation went further to state that the premier was not allowed to take bodyguards on international trips as the host countries would provide bod-
yguards if needed. This constituted wasteful expenditure. When news of the possible connection between Seloba and Buthane leaked, the spokesperson was dragged into an internal disciplinary hearing on the matter, during which even Buthane testified, but the outcome of the hearing was not made public. The suspension was lifted by the GPSCC after evidence was presented to the panel that Seloba’s suspension was published in the media before the letter of intent to suspend him had been issued. It was also found that Seloba only received the charges against him in January, after he wrote a letter to his employers reminding them that his 60-day suspension had lapsed. After hearing all evidence, the GPSCC ruled that Seloba be back at work in his position as spokesperson as of Monday and that he should receive four months’ salary as compensation despite the fact that he received full pay and benefits during his suspension. Premier Matabatha’s spokesperson, Kenny Mathivha told national media that they would be chal-
Children murdered
■ Jeff Jackson
Four young children were brutally murdered in Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort this week. Police have launched a hunt for the father who they believe to be the killer. According to witness accounts the father was last seen with the four kids, by the driver of the school transport bus. The driver said that he was doing the trip from school back home when the father waved the vehicle down. The driver who knows the father, stopped the vehicle and the children exited to leave with their dad. The bodies of the children were later found at two different locations in the area. The suspect allegedly informed a neighbour of the murders of the children and even indicated the places where the bodies could be found the following morning (Tuesday, 18th of February). The neighbour then called the police who, upon arriving discovered the lifeless bodies of three children aged between five and nine years old in the surrounding bushes. The body of the three year old was found roughly three kilometres further away up on the mountain. Three of the children were found with stab wounds. The youngest was found with open wounds. The police have released the names of the deceased as Katlego Pasha (9), Joyce Pasha (7), Tshepo Phasha (5) and Adel Phasha (3). The SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, who also visited the scene has condemned this incident in the strongest possible terms, more so as it was allegedly perpetrated by someone who was supposed to protect these victims. The motive for this brutal murder is not known at this stage. Four counts murder have been opened and Police investigations are continuing. At the time of going to print on Wednesday (yesterday) the suspect had still not been arrested. Anyone with information is requested to contact Lt Col Phillip Mohlala on 0824143070, or the Crime Stop Number 0860010111.

lenging the award as it has nothing to do with the original charges of which they are still awaiting the outcome. He also said they would not allow Seloba to return to work as they did not believe it was the right time for him to do so.
Choral festival this weekend ■ Jeff Jackson
Two of the province’s most prolific gospel choirs will hit the stage in Lenyenye this weekend. Hundreds of choral music fanatics will converge at the Lenyenye community hall to see Bana Ba Lehlogonolo (BBL) and Bright Generations Gospel Choir in action. Choirs have always enjoyed great turnouts when performing at the community hall and according to the event organizers, this Saturday will be no different. Project co-ordinator, Jolly Matlou, told Bulletin in an interview that the choir they will be meeting is from Nobody in the Polokwane municipality. He said the purpose of the event is to raise funds so that the group, BBL, would be able to celebrate their 30th year of existence. The choir formed on the 3rd of October 1990. The BBL group has a very unique approach to

helping their communities. As Matlou explained, the choir members identify children from nearby schools who are in need and the choir then host events to raise money for those children. After each performance, the group visits the schools identified, where they donate items including school uniforms, stationary and other items to the pupils on their list. “Again this year on the 26th of April we are going to share the stage with a choir from Johannesburg and after our event, they plan to raise funds and thereafter identify children who are in need and donate something towards their well-being.” He said lastly they are appealing to the community to attend in large numbers. Starting time for the event is 12:00 on Saturday afternoon until 18:00 in the evening. For more information contact Jolly Matlou on 082 082 8525.

Power crisis: Matlala says a billion needed ■
Joe Dreyer
After 315 hours without power, residents on farms outside Letsitele are not hopeful that the newly installed transformer at Henley substation will bring an end to their suffering. This week two transformers were ordered from two different suppliers. Both were 5Mva units and both were expected to arrive before the weekend. This did however not happen, and the first transformer finally arrived in Henley on Monday morning. It was installed and later that afternoon the residents were able to switch on the lights in their homes for the first time in two weeks. “I have become accustomed to the cold showers and the candlelight evenings and have even forgotten what my home looks like in the evening with the lights on. Charging a phone from a wall socket seems so strange now,” said one of the Henley farm managers when the power was turned on at 21:00 that evening. Their joy was short lived however, as only two hours later, the power was out once again. Farmers reported over the WhatsApp groups that their operations were running on single phase and that the phasing was wrong because all their pumps… were pumping in reverse. The situation was reported to the GTM electrical team and mended again on Tuesday morning. In the meantime, the Eiland area is still without power as the second transformer which was promised, has still not arrived and at the time of going to print on Wednesday, there was still no word on when, or if the unit was on the way. It has cost the community of Henley and Eiland tens of thousands of Rands in fuel to keep the generators going and they have had to discard perishable foods and meat that rotted under the heavy heat without refrigeration. Some have reported damage to electronics and electric fencing batteries. “We want to know where we can claim for these damages and whether the GTM expects us to still pay our full accounts for the month of February considering we only had about a week’s worth of power. Surely one should not be expected to pay for something you never received?” The only official from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality who was willing to meet with the media face to face regarding these issues, was the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala. The esteemed director of the Electrical Engineering department, Sam Lelope, was not willing to join in the discussions. Matlala stated that he was aware of the plight of the farming communities and understands the financial implications for the agricultural industry should these types of power failures continue. On the matter of claims and compensation, he said that he was not certain of the processes, but that the matter will be looked at and information regarding claims and possible submissions would be communicated to residents in due course. Last year, Matlala secured a loan from the Development Bank of South Africa to the tune of R90 million with the express conditions that the money would be used to start upgrading the electrical infrastructure. The R90 million loan is to be repaid over a period of three years in instalments. A further R10 million was given to the GTM in the form of a grant which does not need to be paid back. “When you look at the entire structure of the Greater Tzaneen electrical system, you will quite easily see that R100 million is really not going to fix anything. By my calculations we will need a billion Rand to sort out this mess, but R100 million is at least a start,” Matlala said. “I have started upgrading the Tzaneen main power station in order to be proactive and prevent catastrophes such as Henley and Eiland from ever happening again. We need to become proactive and not just reactive.” The Tzaneen main station situated opposite the Talana hostel has received two new 20Mva transformers to replace the two 15Mva units that were installed in 1976 and 1974 respectively. It is from this power station that Tzaneen, Haenertsburg, Politsi, and Manorvlei receive their electricity after it is received from Tarantaalrand’s Eskom bulk supply feeder. “There are other upgrades that will be implemented here too, including the control room itself and the processes we employ in dealing with faults and error reporting. Once this is done I will start ordering backup transformers and

other units to use in the case of an emergency. It is totally unacceptable that we have to tell our citizens that we are unable to assist them in times of crisis because we do not have transformers on hand. It cannot work like this,” Matlala stated. So far, the GTM has spent roughly R70 million on upgrading the electrical grid and procuring new transformers. Matlala has also mentioned that an amount of R191 million in unpaid electrical debt is still outstanding and if they can manage to balance that debt, they would be in a much better position to plan and implement upgrades to the system. Load Shedding In the meantime, he has also procured three large generators, two of which have been The GTM’s Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala standing at the spot where the new transformers will be installed. Photos: Joe Dreyer installed at the Georges Valley and Tzaneen dam pump stations “For example, if we have load shedding, we will have three hour in order to ensure water supply to residents during blackouts and slots twice a day where the other areas will have two hour slots load shedding. “Generators are never an answer as they can burn three times a day. The totals add up to the same amount of load out and cost a lot to run continuously, these three generators are shedding.” however, emergency measures. If someone dies during load shedDoes Golden Acres have load shedding? “Indeed, they do, yes, of ding because there was no water, I am the accounting officer who course. Nobody escapes load shedding. I live in Golden Acres mywill be prosecuted for it and I will not allow that to happen.” self and I feel the same frustrations my residents and neighbours We asked Matlala to shed some light on the rumours that Tzaneen do. Load shedding is inescapable, nobody is above that.” is the only municipality in the country that has three hours’ worth For more on the electrical crisis and the plans by Matlala and the of load shedding at a time, when the rest of the country has only GTM’s electrical engineering department to upgrade and refurbish two, or two and half hours. He confirmed this but said that though the system, pick up a copy of your Bulletin every week and follow Tzaneen has three hours at a time, the area has less slots in a day. us on Facebook for regular news updates.

Relief to relieve
■ Joe Dreyer Last year, before the elections, Bulletin’s editor spent the day inside the Talana hostel in the old industrial area of Tzaneen. During that visit he spoke to a number of the residents and heard their complaints which included the lack of ablution facilities for the residents. This week while on a visit to the Tzaneen Power Station, he noticed that
there were ten new outside toilets erected in an open field opposite the hostel. Each toilet has a basin and is well ventilated. The toilets are divided into male and female sections and clearly marked as such in order to avoid any unwanted confusion. The municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, confirmed that the GTM had heard the cries of the residents of this area, and the toilets were erected to alleviate at least a small measure of their plight.

Massive rock python A Macantine’s Day saved in the forest to remember ■
Jeff Jackson
Macadamia residents proved that one is never too young to be in love when they hosted their annual Valentine’s party on the 14th of February at the community hall. The theme was quite obviously a romance inspired affair with those in attendance opting for the reckless red flair prescribed by that little winged archer some have known for more than a lifetime. “Not gonna lie, I was sh***ing myself throughout the whole operation!” Bulletin has received videos and photographs of a beautiful African Rock Python which was caught in the middle of a blue gum plantation by Diggers Rest felling crews. We spoke to Daryl von Pannier about the experience. “Our crews were busy felling gums up in Agatha near the Lerato Primary School. The plantation up there is known as the Liobi plantation,” he explained. At about 10:00 on Thursday morning, 13th of February, one of the plantation workers ran up to his foreman and shouted that there was a massive snake in the plantation. “Our crew radioed in the find and said they could not continue working because of the snake. At Diggers Rest we care for the natural inhabitants of our plantations and so we ordered them to stop working and wait for us to arrive.” Von Pannier called the local snake wranglers who
were elsewhere occupied and could not assist, and so he and his manager, Mark Schmidt, drove up to the plantation themselves to assist. Together, the two men coached the snake to safety before they recruited a few other members of their crew and lifted her gently off the ground. “We walked about 400m out of the plantation and set her free in a safe part of the indigenous bush. We nudged and waved her into the undergrowth and once we were sure she was safe, we could all return back to work.” When Von Pannier showed the footage to the local snake handlers, they confirmed that the snake was likely touching on the 5m mark in length and could very well be a female. Bulletin has since posted a video and photographs of this incident online and the post has gone viral with more than 180 shares and 67 802 people reached. Follow us on Facebook to catch all the videos and action. We post regular content which ranges from insightful political pieces to the downright odd. Send us your interesting videos or photographs to joe@bulletin.us.com and you could win two movie tickets next week.

Amarok Canyon wins the coveted crown ■
Roelof de Jonge
The VW Amarok 3.0TDI V6 4Motion Canyon was recently announced as the Leisure Wheels magazine’s 2020 Bakkie of the Year. This German bakkie was up against nine other double cab bakkies for the crown sold on the South African market. Volkswagen’s Amarok Canyon scored 90.5% ahead of Ford’s Ranger Raptor (86.3%) and Toyota’s Hilux 2.8GD-6 Legend 50 (85.4%). The new competition format revolves around the bakkie requirements for Joe Average, and not flippant matters such as 0–100km/h acceleration times. Instead, the competition focused on real-world issues such as fuel consumption, load carrying ability, towing, safety, handling, 4x4 ability, interior, long-term ownership and, counting 20% of the overall score, a subjective driving test score, as adjudged by five industry experts and professional drivers. The Leisure Wheels team, supported by independent vehicle dynamics test experts, spent a week at the Gerotek Vehicle Test facility, putting the bakkies through a variety of dynamic tests, collecting comparable data. This data was incorporated in the different segments to ensure a more scientific approach to the results, instead of merely offering the opinion of a panel of judges. To ensure an even more comprehensive approach, the bakkies were subjected to a dynamometer test at Dastek Automotive Service City to determine actual horsepower at the wheels. This, combined with weighing each vehicle on Gerotek’s specialised scales, provided actual power-to-weight ratio results, which proved very interesting indeed. Some of the results are bound to be controversial. For one, the Mitsubishi Triton, a pre-event favourite, took some hard knocks in the long-term ownership segment, where its parts bin comparison result proved an eye-watering 322% more expensive than the most affordable bakkie in this particular comparison, the Isuzu D-Max. The erstwhile Toyota Land Cruiser 79, as tough as it may be, was upstaged in the dynamic department by all the young guns. The powerful MercedesBenz X350d, fitted with a trendy but expensive aftermarket styling package, recorded the second slowest time in the emergency double lane change test. And the Ford Ranger Raptor, with its cool cabin and bespoke suspension, recorded the third lowest power-to-weight ratio result, adding impetus to the school of thought that it deserves more horses under the bonnet, and that more horses may have elevated the Raptor to the top spot on the podium. As it stands, the results are: First - Volkswagen Amarok 3.0TDI 4Motion Canyon AT - 90.5% Ford Ranger Raptor - 86.3% Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 4x4 Legend 50 (manual) - 85.4% Ford Ranger 2.0 Bi-Turbo 4x4 Wildtrak AT - 83.4% Mercedes-Benz X350d 4Matic - 81.6% Isuzu D-Max 3.0DT 4x4 LX (manual) - 78.9% Nissan Navara 2.3D 4x4 Stealth AT - 78.8% Mitsubishi Triton 2.4Di-D 4x4 AT - 75.9%
Mahindra Pik Up 2.2CRDe 4x4 Karoo - 70.4% Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Namib - 64.2% “Our aim with this test was to focus on real-world factors that affect real bakkie owners. For the fuel consumption test, conducted on Gerotek’s high speed oval, we devised a set route that included stop-and-pull-off simulations, full throttle overtaking simulations, as well as slow and high-speed laps. We also added 190kg in the loading bays, so the results are what consumers can realistically expect to achieve, on a daily basis,” explains Leisure Wheels’ Danie Botha. The segments were created with real-world factors top of the mind. Like the weight-carrying ability segment, which comprised several sub segments. With a 500kg load on the loading bay, rear sagging was recorded. In-gear acceleration (80–120km/h) was measured, as was emergency braking (100–0km/h), all with the half-a-ton load. “We also added actual payload capability to this equation. Manufacturers often claim their product can carry X amount of weight, but in reality that amount is but a pipedream,” says Botha. The team weighed all the bakkies with a full tank of fuel, plus the
same driver. Then this weight was subtracted from the stated gross vehicle mass (GVM). The difference is what the bakkie, by law, can actually carry. What is it about the Amarok that set it apart from the rest of the pack? “It’s certainly not perfect,” says Botha. “It didn’t score well in the 4x4 ability, long-term ownership and safety segments. But for the rest, it really is a solid, classy package. It seems VW’s engineers worked some kind of magic with the leaf-sprung rear suspension, offering an SUV-like ride on all surfaces. And the V6 engine, here’s a bakkie that will outrun many hot hatches between traffic lights, yet it can carry nearly a ton on the loading bay.” A certain anomaly in the test line-up is the Mercedes-Benz X350d. The tests were conducted in November 2019, when the 190kW Benz was still very much in the game. However, by the end of January 2020, Mercedes-Benz announced that the X-Class, which is based on Nissan’s Navara, would be discontinued due to lagging sales. “It’s a real pity about the X-Class. If Mercedes-Benz had maybe created its own bakkie from scratch it could have turned out very differently. Be that as it may, the 2020 Bakkie of the Year results proved very interesting, and even shocking in some areas. Hopefully these results will assist prospective bakkie owners in making a more informed choice. If nothing else, it may well prove to be a great conversation piece around the next braai,” concludes Botha. More detailed results in the respective segments will be published on leisurewheels.co.za.

Volkswagen dominates at 2020 Consumer Awards ■
Roelof de Jonge
Volkswagen was the biggest winner at the fifth annual Cars.co.za Consumer Awards held at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on the 6th of February. Widely regarded as South Africa’s most definitive automotive awards programme, the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards, have become a highlight in the automotive calendar since the inaugural event in 2016. The wins at the Consumer Awards come after a record-breaking 2019 where the Volkswagen brand achieved a 20.4% passenger market share, the highest in 23 years, and the manufacturing plant in Uitenhage achieved a new all-time record for production in a single year. Volkswagen won the biggest accolade at the Consumer Awards, the coveted Brand of the Year award, which is solely determined by market and customer data. “We are truly happy and honoured with the vote of confidence and support from our customers. At Volkswagen we pride ourselves with outstanding products and excellent customer service and winning the Brand of the Year award is recognition of the great work being done by Volkswagen employees as well as the dealer network,” said Mike Glendinning, Director of Sales and Marketing from Volkswagen Group South Africa. Volkswagen’s first win of the night was the Compact Hatchback category which went to the Polo, this is the second time the locally manufactured vehicle has won this category. The second award for Volkswagen went to the Polo GTI which won the Fun Hatchback category at its first time being a finalist at the Consumer Awards. The popular Golf GTI won the Premium Hatch-
back category, bringing Volkswagen’s wins on the night to three. With only five months on sale in South Africa, the T-Cross won its first award in the Compact Family Car category. The Arteon defended its Business Class category title with a back-toback win. Volkswagen’s sixth category award for the night went to the Amarok which won the hotly contested Leisure Double Cab category. This is the third time the Amarok has won this category. “We are so proud of the Volkswagen wins at this year’s awards. For the locally manufactured Polo and Polo GTI to defend and win their categories respectively, is great recognition for the Uitenhage plant. I am also very proud of the T-Cross which continues to be a key player in the A0 SUV segment and this win is a further statement of the great package this compact SUV offers. A great performance also by our premium brands, the Arteon and much-loved Golf GTI. With

the bakkie market being intensely competitive in South Africa, it is a terrific feat that the Amarok defended its title in this category for the third time,” concluded Glendinning. The Volkswagen brand has had the most cate-
gory wins (16) in the history of the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. Volkswagen is also the only brand to have won at least one Consumer Awards category every year since the programme began in 2015/16.
suspension (ECS) and electronically controlled limited slip differential ensures an exhilarating drive with cornering capabilities that befits the i30 N’s hot-hatch character. The i30 N reaches a top speed of 250km/h and goes from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds. That is all thanks to its powerful T-GDi engine, generating 353Nm torque from between 1 500 to 4 700rpm, reaching a maximum of 378Nm for a brief period when in the over boost mode. Inside the i30 N combines the latest connectivity technology with performance analysing software. Entertainment features include smart-device synching through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the eight-inch free-floating screen. Satellite navigation information can
also be displayed, but for those race-day track experiences the car’s systems can also record lap times and cornering forces thanks to a G-Force meter. In Normal or Eco mode the i30 N can be an everyday car with softer suspension and fuel consumption that reflects economical driving. Special i30 N sales dealerships The i30 N will be on sale at 14 selected Hyundai dealerships in South Africa, and one each in Botswana and Namibia. The South African i30 N dealerships are: Belville, Somerset West, Port Elizabeth, Durban South, Pinetown, Umhlanga, Richard’s Bay, East Rand, The Glen, Sandton, Roodepoort, Centurion, Wonderboom and Polokwane. The i30 N can be serviced at all Hyundai dealerships in South Africa, Botswana Namibia and Eswatini. Price The Hyundai i30 N goes on sale at a suggested retail price of R679 900, which includes a seven year or 200 000km warranty, roadside assistance for seven years or 150 000km, and a five-year 75 000 km service plan. Service intervals are 15 000km or once a year.
Hyundai’s first hot hatch now in SA.
■
Roelof de Jonge
The Hyundai i30 N performance hatchback has been developed on three cornerstones under the theme Fun to Drive namely Cornering, Race-track Capability and Everyday Sports Car. Advanced technology and a high level of driver customisation has been built into the i30 N, which means it can serves as an comfort-oriented commuter as well as a race-track ready performance car. The ‘N’ stands for Namyang, Hyundai Motor’s global Research and Development Centre in Korea, and for the world-famous Nürburgring motor racing complex in Germany, home to Hyundai’s European Test Centre where the manufacturer’s models built on the European continent are developed and tested. The i30 N underwent 10 000km of driving on the notorious 23km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit to test its durability. The N symbol also has another meaning that speaks to the car’s track credentials. The letter is a depiction of a race chicane and represents the i30 N’s philosophy of translating the joy of negotiating winding motorsport tracks, to the fun of everyday road driving. When the driver hits the throttle and shifts through the gears, the i30 N’s rev-matching function resulting in smoother gear shifting, while the over boost function increases torque by 8% and acceleration by between 6 to 7% from the 2-litre, 202 kW turbocharged engine. The exhilarating feeling is enhanced by the car’s sound from the dual muffler exhaust featuring the variable exhaust valve system. The cockpit of the i30 N shows key performance parameters through the new instrument cluster and the eightinch free-floating screen’s modes such as the G-Force meter for live tracking of performance. The i30 N was launched in 2017 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show but, thanks to Hyundai Motor’s experience in the high-octane world of motorsport, the first ideas were born on the track long before and developed to
deliver a car which screams fun as much as its racing engine hums. The i30 N that is launched in South Africa will be equipped with a Performance Package that, apart from the other N-features, include the high-output 202 kW turbocharged engine, an electronically controlled limited slip differential, a variable exhaust valve system and 19-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero performance tyres. While it is based on the i30 five-door, the i30 N boasts its own unique design. It shimmers with the blue colouring synonymous with Hyundai Motorsports race cars. The model has an enlarged version of Hyundai’s defining Cascading Grille providing more air cooling to the engine and brakes. Proof that the i30 N is engineered to put a smile on your face is seen with the aptly named N Grin Control System. Buttons on the steering wheel alternate the i30 N’s five drive modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom. Each mode changes the car’s character, adjusting the high-performance parameters of the vehicle, including its engine and rev matching. Driving systems like the electronically controlled

Letsitele’s library hosts a Back to School competition every year with the aim to pay back and thank its registered members for their loyalty. All the names of the children from registered members were written on a piece of paper, which were then folded up and placed in a box for the draw. This year the lucky winner was Adriaan Erasmus from Dr Annecke Primary School. His prize contained a backpack, pens, pencils, exam pad amongst others. The competition was held from the 6th until the 31st of January.

Limpopo se skole krieketspanne by verskeie nasionale krieketweke verteenwoordig.
