HOW TO AVOID DO-IT-YOURSELF PROJECT INJURIES Tough economic times call for even tougher measures -- and for many homeowners this means they’re getting hands-on with home improvement projects. Although DIY projects can save money in theory, they may result in a trip to the hospital if safety precautions aren’t followed. According to recent statistics, 85 per cent of homeowners are tackling projects around the house rather than hiring outside contractors. In this difficult economy, emergency rooms are seeing an influx of people coming in with injuries ranging from lacerations to puncture wounds from nail guns. John and Jane Do-ItYourselfer has easy access to home-improvement supplies and tools at the local home centre. He or she may also be inspired by any of the many shows on television instructing individuals to give renovations a try. However, many homeowners are not schooled in proper safety procedures or do not know how to use tools correctly. It’s a recipe for injury.

Common injuries include: • falls from ladders or scaffolding • hand and finger injuries -- including amputation -- from power saws and grinder/sanders • nail-gun injuries; since 1991, these injuries have increased by 200 per cent • eye injuries and breathing difficulties Homeowners should consider the risks of improvements before beginning. They should also take precautions to do improvements in the safest manner possible. Follow these guidelines: • Always read the manufacturers’ safety information and usage guidelines for any tools before they are put to use. • Turn off electrical current to rooms and outlets prior to doing any electrical repairs. • Wear proper safety equipment, including goggles, dust masks or res-
pirators, boots, and gloves. • Store chemicals in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf out of reach of children and pets. • Be cautious of power cords. Always unplug tools and turn off switches when the item is not in use. • Do not climb past the top rung of ladders. Do not use furniture or stacked items as a ladder. • Jobs such as electrical work, roof work, gas
projects, or major plumbing issues are better left to a skilled contractor. • Make sure drill bits and saw blades are sharp. Dull tools can result in injuries. • Keep fire extinguishers and a good first-aid kit readily available always. There are no cost savings that make risking a disability worth it. If a project is beyond an individual’s scope of ability, hire a professional instead. You’ll be glad you did.

COLOURS FOR AFFORDABLE INTERIORS With money tight and household expenses rising, there's a natural tendency to put your remodeling plans on hold. But even if your budget is limited, one home-remodeling project is still affordable--and fun, too--interior painting. According to the Paint Quality Institute, the doit-yourself cost of repainting a room is typically well under $100. Start by visiting your local paint retailer, asking to see the colour display. The fun begins by looking through colour cards and envisioning your room with an entirely new colour scheme. Decisive types might quickly spot the perfect colour for the room you're repainting. For everyone else, it's usually best to take a few colour cards home to view in the space you want to paint. Once there, you should follow a few time-tested rules. First, when evaluating colour options, conceal all the colours on the card except the one you are considering. By isolating the colour, you'll get a better idea of how the room
will look in a certain hue. Second, evaluate the colour both in daylight and at night when all the light is artificial. A colour can look very different when lighting conditions change. (Paint can look darker at night, in shadow, and on cloudy days.) Third, consider when you most often use the room. If painting a breakfast area, be sure you like the way the colour looks in morning light; but if painting a bedroom, it's more important the colour is pleasing under artificial light. Fourth, colour tends to be more intense on a large area than a small one. A colour that looks just right on a colour card may be too dark or too bold when applied to walls. For safety's sake, move down one degree of intensity on the card and choose a slightly lighter tint or shade. Finally, if you are still not certain of your choice of colour, buy a small quantity of paint and apply a couple of large swatches to the walls. Live with the colour for a day or two to see if you missed the mark or nailed it.

TREE AND SHRUB PRUNING TIPS • Fruit trees. If the buds on a fruit tree have already started swelling, you've waited too long too prune. In general, fruit trees are best pruned in late winter or early spring. When pruning, be sure to remove all branches growing inward as well as limbs growing straight up. • Berry bushes. Berry bushes are typically pruned in late fall or early winter, once you have finished harvesting the berries. When pruning berry bushes, keep in mind the importance of shape with respect to a berry bush's aesthetic appeal. • Rosebushes. Rosebushes are generally best pruned in late winter, with early spring the latest possible cutoff date. Remove any older shoots and leave between four and eight canes while removing any that are growing inward. When cutting them down, try to cut them to right around two feet above ground, and cut close to an inch above a bud or strong shoot. • Evergreen shrubs. Evergreen shrubs won't flower,
but they can be pruned after they have produced cones or shrubs. That typically occurs between late winter and early spring, so this can be done as the weather begins to warm up as part of your early season spring cleanup. • Evergreen trees. In general, evergreen trees do not need to be pruned. It's generally obvious when an evergreen does need to be pruned, as the tree will be noticeably larger and in obvious need of pruning. Evergreens that do need to be pruned typically need it in late spring or early summer, and they will likely not grow much after a good pruning. • Deciduous trees. Deciduous trees are generally only pruned for shaping. For those looking to shape, mid to late winter is the ideal time to do so. • Deciduous shrubs. Mid to late spring is often the best time to prune deciduous shrubs. That's generally after they have flowered, and it will be obvious when they are in need or pruning, as they will likely have lots of unsightly branches evident to the naked eye.
