FLASHBACK VICENTE GANESHA
A Vicente le gusto el ambiente, fue a Alicante a recoger sus cosas y se instaló. Habían pasado cinco años de aquella primera visita guiada por los excesos y el deseo de abrirse a nuevas experiencias de ‘More’. “Empecé vendiendo en la calle Mayor. En mi pueblo había una trapería y compré un montón de ropa vieja. El negocio había ido bien en Sitges y decidí trasladarlo aquí”. Luego vino una tienda, The Pink Fly, en el 91 la mítica The End, una boutique que todavía hoy se recuerda, y un poco más tarde la no menos célebre Ganesha, la tienda de referencia en sus vacaciones en la isla de Armani, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier y todas las tops que uno pueda imaginar. “Claudia Schiffer, Natalia Vodaniova, Kate Moss, Elle Macpherson. Todas”. También pasan por ella importantes editoras de moda.
Vicente liked what he saw, he went back to Alicante to pack all his stuff and came back to live here. Five years had gone by since that guided tour of excess and the desire for new experiences which was ‘More’. “I started selling on the Main Street. There was a thrift store in my town and I bought lots of old clothes. The business had worked well in Sitges and so I decided to bring it here”. Then came the Pink Fly store, the legendary boutique The End in ’91, which people still remember, and later the equally renowned Ganesha, the reference store for Armani, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier and all the top models you can imagine on their holidays on the island. “Claudia Schiffer, Natalia Vodaniova, Kate Moss, Elle Macpherson. All of them”. Famous fashion editors also visit the store.
¿La razón? La ropa es una, la buganvilla de la terraza seguro que es otra. Pero tiene que haber algo más, una tercera y definitiva. “Creo que soy un catalizador, me gusta pasar a cada persona áquello que pienso que va a disfrutar”. Pero no todos van a Ganesha exclusivamente a comprar. “Armani, un señor educadísimo, entra y se lleva camisetas para la gente del barco y kurtas para regalar a sus amigos. Siempre hablamos en español. Otros, como Etro o Missoni, se inspiran”. Y otros, como Mario Testino, practican excepcionalmente el trueque. “Pasó por aquí y me dijo que quería hacerme una foto. Yo le dije que no podía pagarle. Finalmente lo cerramos con un traje de torero”.
The reason? Clothes are one, and surely the bougainvillea on the terrace is another. But there must be something else, the third and definitive reason. “I think I’m a catalyst, I like passing on to everyone what I think they’ll enjoy”. But people don’t go to Ganesha only to buy. “Armani, a very well-mannered man, will come in and take t-shirts for the people on his boat, and kurtas to give to his friends. We always speak in Spanish. Others, like Etro or Missoni, seek inspiration”. And others, like Mario Testino, will exceptionally come here to barter. “He came in and told me he wanted to take a picture of me. I told him I couldn’t pay him. Finally, we closed the deal with a bullfighter’s outfit”.
No es el único fotógrafo de prestigio que ha puesto su objetivo en Vicente Ganesha. Alberto García Alix lo retrató en el 97 junto a la buganvilla que enmarca la tienda y que hoy es un símbolo de La Marina, donde Vicente, bromista, es visitado por amigos, clientes fieles y artistas como Peter Lindbergh y Anish Kapoor. “Ibiza no ha cambiado, ha cambiado el mundo, pero la isla sigue siendo un lugar especial y lo notas en seguida si eres una persona con sensibilidad. En Ibiza te sientes único, especial, la isla te permite ser tú mismo”.
He isn’t the only renowned photographer to point his lens at Vicente Ganesha. Alberto García Alix portrayed him in ’97 next to the bougainvillea that grows as a frame to the store and which has now become a symbol of La Marina, where friends, loyal customers and artists, such as Peter Lindbergh and Anish Kapoor, visit Vicente, a joker and much fun. “Ibiza hasn’t changed. The world has changed but the island is still a special place, you can easily notice it if you have a certain sensibility. You feel unique, special in Ibiza. The island allows you to be yourself”.
“En los años 80 venían muchos políticos, especialmente políticos vascos. Ibiza era como una vía de escape. También muchos músicos, gente como Pink Floyd, pero estos no solían mezclarse. Los que se mezclaban eran los bohemios y gente con dinero. Ácratas que se llamaban entonces”.
“Lots of politicians came here in the 80’s, especially from the Basque Country. Ibiza was like an escape valve. Also many musicians, people like Pink Floyd, but they didn’t usually mix that much. It was the bohemians and well-off people who would mix. Anarchists, as they were called then”.
Además de la moda, la música es otra de sus grandes aficiones. “Tengo una colección de vinilos enorme, sobre todo música de los años 60 y 70”. “No tengo gran apego a las cosas materiales excepto los libros y los discos, porque leyendo o escuchando una canción puedo recordar”. Recuerdos como los días en la playa de Es Cavallet, “sin nadie”, o en cala Pluma, “donde había un bar con un señor que siempre te pedía un reloj”, o las noches en Glorys y Amnesia. “Amnesia era la número uno, lo más del momento, era divina; el primer after hours que se conoció”.
Besides fashion, music is another passion of his. “I have an amazing vinyl collection, especially of music from the 60’s and 70’s. I’m not too attached to material things except books and records. Reading or listening to a song allows me to remember stuff”. Memories like days spent on Es Cavallet beach, “on my own”, or on Cala Pluma, “there was a bar there with a guy who would always ask for a watch”, or nights spent at Glorys and Amnesia. “Amnesia was number one, the it place of the time, divine; the first known after hours club”.
“He salido y mucho. Ahora ya salgo poco. Este verano sólo he estado en la fiesta de Chopard”. Sin embargo tiene muy claros los sitios a los que le gusta ir. “Las Dos Lunas, un sitio que siempre debería de existir; Massimo y Almudena son dos señores de la noche. Y Can Pau. Es gente que de verdad ha hecho Ibiza mejor”.
“I used to party hard, not anymore. I’ve only been to the Chopard party this summer”. However, he knows the places he likes to go to. “Las Dos Lunas, a place that should always exist; Massimo and Almudena are Lord and Lady of the night. And Can Pau. These are people who have really made Ibiza better”.
