Not goodbye, but good work

Speaking to you through the pages of Rotary magazine this past year has brought me so much joy. I have especially enjoyed sharing the incredible stories of the wonderful people Nick and I have met on the Imagine Impact Tour.

From Patzún in the mountainous western highlands of Guatemala to a small village outside of Lusaka, Zambia, we have been greeted by countless people who imagine and work toward a better world.

We were inspired by teachers who imagine a better education for girls and boys facing gen der-based violence, by Rotaractors in a refugee settlement who created a flour mill to provide for their families in a critical food shortage, and by brave polio workers who push tirelessly to reach every last child

All of us have imagined Rotary this year. This means looking past what we are today and reaching for what we could be tomorrow. We imagine a rotary that will continue to tell our stories in impactful ways, work to reduce our carbon footprint, and focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that lift every voice in our organization and beyond

Nick and I want to thank all of you for the moments we’ve shared and for your efforts to Imagine Rotary And now, we look forward to continuing these efforts as we Create Hope in the World It has been an honour and a privilege to serve with each of you

DISTRICT GRANTS MESSAGE FOR JUNE 2023

Myrna

District Grants Chair

This message for the June Foundation Newsletter marks the end of my four-year term as District Grants Chair.

I have had the pleasure to serve with four District Governors, two Foundation Chairs, and about 150 members who were and are qualified to administer District Grants.

By the end of May, I will have funded $161,441 in District Grant funds for 125 projects. See the chart below.

The grant interactions represent the number of different active, funded, and cancelled grant projects on which I interacted with grant administrators.

These grant funds represent projects valued at approximately $500,000 or more.

I want to thank all Clubs for the varied and interesting projects that they have proposed and carried out both in our local communities and abroad. These projects are posted in the Rotary Foundation area on the District Website.

Everyone needs tech support, and Martin Ward and Dennis Dinsmore never failed to come through when I wanted to develop a teaching tool, change a document on the website, or when revisions were needed to an existing information sheet.

I want to thank my husband, Morgan, for supporting me and never complaining when I spent the afternoon on the computer working on grants or when I took my laptop on vacation.

You will be reading this after May 31, so all final reports will be in, District Grants will have been funded and the Proposals for 2023-24 have been added to the Grants Module on the District Website.

Please welcome Pat Cavan, my successor, from the Wiarton Rotary Club.

Thank you to all members of District 6330 who support the Rotary Foundation Annual-Share Fund which makes all this grant activity happen.

 This report was prepared May 12, 2023, and the amount represents $30,904 paid out and the rest pending on receiving the final reports,

A FOUNDATION TO BUILD ON

The Rotary Foundation is recognized as one of the most effective and well-managed charitable organizations in the world, with 12 consecutive four-star ratings from Charity Navigator and an A-plus rating from CharityWatch.

We know that the Foundation is helping Rotarians do good in the world, but it can be difficult to convey the full scope of its work. So we’ve put together some figures from the past five years 2014-15 through 2018-19 to tell the story of the generosity of Rotarians and the good work that the Foundation supports.

June 2023 , 2020 Page 25

We are THIS close –

Only Afghanistan and Pakistan are polio endemic.

Polio-endemic refers to a region or country where poliomyelitis, also known as polio, is regularly present and spreading. In other words, it is an area where there is a continuous transmission of the poliovirus, possibly leading to a significant number of cases of the disease.

There is currently no cure for the disease, but it can be prevented through vaccination.

Countries or regions that are polio-endemic have significant challenges in controlling and eradicating the disease due to various factors, including limited healthcare infrastructure, poor sanitation, and vaccine hesitancy. As we get close to eradicating the virus, there are still challenges.

WASH Rotary Action Group supports and ensures sustainable long-lasting clean water, sanitation, and hygiene programs to communities in need.

Funding for your WASH in Health Care Facilities (WinHCF) projects!!!

May 9, 2023

A very generous donor has offered funding for “Software” for WinHCF projects. “Software” means those activities that support sustainability – such as training, capacity building, behavioural change, monitoring, and evaluation.

IT WILL NOT fund “hardware” (e.g. infrastructure, drilling boreholes, building latrines, etc.).

A donation of up to US$5000 is available to match the funding for software included in a Global Grant application.

The Background

A 2022 report from the World Health Organization and UNICEF stated that:

• 850 million people use health care facilities with no water.

June 2023 , 2020 Page 27

• 780 million people use hospitals and clinics with no toilets or latrines.

• A quarter of all health care facilities have no basic water service.

• 1 in 3 health care facilities lack hand-washing facilities at critical points of care such as the delivery room or surgery – depriving as many as 3.85 billion people of basic hygiene service.

The consequences are staggering:

• One in ten patients develop infections in hospital, leading to severe illness or death.

• 300,000+ maternal deaths a year result from infections acquired in a healthcare facility

• As many as 600,000 infants die each year from infections that could be prevented by the simple use of soap and water.

The World Health Assembly has called for action:

Every health care facility (HCF) to have WASH services by 2030.

• A million women from 114 countries were surveyed on healthcare.

• Water and Sanitation rated second only to respectful care.

They want clean toilets. They want soap and water to wash themselves and their babies after birth.

As People of Action, Rotary members are the heart of our communities. We can lead the way to sustainable safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in healthcare facilities.

This is the purpose of this support.

Please contact info@washrag.org for information and details.

IMAGINE LOW-CARBON ENERGY SECURITY

Imagine if all the fears imbedded in the 6th IPCC report come true.

Imagine if winter did not come. I have lived this.

I grew up with my father building community ski resorts in Nova Scotia, Canada. I bought a resort called Ski Martock from him in 1979. Ski Martock is a mid-sized community ski resort with the base elevation only 30 feet above sea level. We employed 278 staff, had over 100,000 annual customers and an average winter season of 109 days. Despite our size, we generated several Olympians and had a very strong clientele base.

As part of good operational practices, I installed a weather station in the summer of 1980, with equipment to measure rain, snow, humidity, cloud cover and depth of snow on the ground. The coldest 800 hours of the season (mean snow-making temperatures) determined the success of our human-made snow production, and therefore our ski season. During the 1980/81 season our mean snow-making temperature was -6.8C. By the year 2000, it was up to -2.3C. That means that for 50% of our snowmaking hours we were running the plant at temps warmer than -2.3C. This is very energyintensive and inefficient. At peak, we were consuming 2 megawatts of power.

I sold the resort in 2003. Luckily it was before the warming temperatures had an effect on the fiscal performance. It was a good time to exit. Climate change has already had a huge impact on our family. As we moved from Nova Scotia to Alberta, you can call us climate refugees.

To try to secure a future for our grandchildren and young people across the world, I switched careers to immerse myself in climate solutions. I’m writing to share news of breakthroughs that give me hope.

SPEAKERS’ PASSPORT

Meeting summary, May 2023

If you missed last month’s meeting (May), you missed another excellent speaker. Sandi Shults spoke passionately about Organ Donation and how it has affected her life!

Also, two new members were inducted – Brittany Elliott and Heather Macdonald.

June 2023 , 2020 Page 35

ORGAN DONATION

For Sandi – and, as we learned last month, for Deb – organ donation was a journey of hope.

…a few notes about Organ Donation below

Organ donation is a selfless act that has the power to transform lives and bring hope to individuals in dire need. Organ donation has a profound impact on the individuals involved, through the emotional journey and the significance of wait times. Organ donation is a noble practice, and it is hoped that more people will consider becoming organ donors.

The Gift of Life Organ donation has a profound effect on both the donor and the recipient. For the recipient, it offers a lifeline, an opportunity to regain health, and a chance to live a fulfilling life. Transplants can restore vital functions and grant individuals the freedom to pursue their dreams, spend quality time with loved ones, and contribute to society. Organ recipients often describe the post-transplant period as a second chance, filled with gratitude and a renewed zest for life.

The Emotional Journey. The decision to become an organ donor or receive an organ transplant is not one to be taken lightly. It is a journey filled with hope, anxiety, and emotional intensity. For those waiting for a transplant, each passing day can be agonizing, as they navigate the uncertainties of their condition and the search for a suitable organ. They experience a mix of emotions hope, fear, and impatience as they anticipate the life-changing call that could come at any moment.

Wait Times. Wait times for organ transplants can vary significantly based on factors such as organ availability, medical urgency, and compatibility. Unfortunately, the demand for organs far exceeds the supply, leading to waiting lists that can be distressingly long. The duration of the wait can range from months to years, leaving individuals and their families in a constant state of anticipation and uncertainty. This highlights the urgent need for more people to register as organ donors and for society as a whole to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of donation.

Inspiring Hope and Taking Action. Organ donation is an extraordinary gift that empowers individuals to make a lasting impact on the lives of others. By becoming an organ donor, one has the potential to save multiple lives and give hope to those in desperate need. Furthermore, raising awareness about organ donation and advocating for policy changes can help improve the efficiency of the transplant system, reduce wait times, and save countless lives. It is through education, empathy, and active participation that we can build a future where no one has to wait excessively for an organ transplant.

Organ donation is a deeply personal and impactful decision that touches the lives of individuals in profound ways. It offers hope and a second chance at life for recipients, while also transforming donors into heroes whose selfless acts ripple through families and communities.

By considering organ donation, supporting initiatives to reduce wait times, and spreading awareness, we can contribute to a world where every person in need of a transplant can receive one in a timely manner. Together, let us embrace the power of organ donation and make a difference in the lives of those who await the gift of life.

If you wear glasses, you should not surf other web sites during the meeting. The reflection from the monitor in your spectacles will inform the entire group that your attention is elsewhere.

Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet!

I don't trip over things. I do random gravity checks!

Old age is coming at a really bad time!

From a letter to The Atlantic - Oooops!

When I was a child, I thought Nap Time was a punishment; now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation!

The biggest lie I tell myself is ... "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it."

Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the friends to post my bail when I finally snap!

I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights.” I'm just very wise.

My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work.

If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees.

The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no" which is shorter than "yes".

I like my middle finger best because it always sticks up for me!

When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

I've lost my mind and I'm pretty sure my kids took it!

Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound!

Lord, Give me patience and give it to me NOW.

Of course, I talk to myself. Sometimes I need expert advice.
