Nestled among the trees of Wildwood is Lucky Dog Central, a canine-friendly café that’s building a name for itself as one of the best hangouts in town. The coffee shop was founded in 2024 by wife-and-husband team Diana Mekler and Adam Shomstein, who own a private family physician practice in the area.
With no experience other than both being “huge dog fanatics,” the two decided to embark on the joint venture of opening a spot that truly caters to dogs and their human companions. “We said go for it. Around COVID, everyone was kind of reevaluating their life,” Mekler says. “We got this standalone place in Wildwood that was built in the 1950s. We started renovating it ourselves, and it took almost four years.”
In their spare time between treating families, Mekler and Shomstein learned everything about running a coffee shop, from operating espresso machines to crafting a menu of delicious sandwiches and drinks to sourcing animal snacks and more. There is no shortage of options for humans and dogs alike.
Unlike other dog-friendly spaces, Lucky Dog Central is specifically designed to address the needs of its four-legged friends first. The café’s back door leads into a one-acre backyard built for pooch play, making it ideal for meetups and events. “The space they’ve built is amazing. You could not even be a dog person and still go to enjoy their food – it’s killer,”

friend and frequent visitor Chris Phillips says.
Lucky Dog Central also prioritizes local partnerships. They source beans from The Bean Doctor (based in Cuba, Mo.), provide a space for Miss Becky’s Salsa Shack, and work with a local butcher for ingredients. Mekler and Shomstein also host rescue organizations and breed meetups for people to give back and build community. “We try to work a lot with local rescues,” Mekler says. “This is a great venue because [the animals are] not in confined spaces, and they have a higher chance of being adopted.”
Mekler and Shomstein are still finding their footing as business owners in the area. Wildwood can be a tough market, and with a location that’s tucked into the trees, it can be hard to stumble upon the café. Just a few months ago, Mekler took to social media to encourage more visitors. Things have picked up, but with colder temperatures, rising inflation, and a wobbly job market, Mekler senses some wariness from locals who may want to stay in. By bridging the gap between local necessity and genuine hospitality, however, Lucky Dog Central is securing its place as Wildwood’s essential year-round hub, reminding the community that a truly welcoming space for people and their pups is worth the trek into the trees.

Whether or not love is on your mind this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to pay your own heart some attention, too. February is American Heart Month, and it’s always a good time to reconsider how you can keep your heart healthy for years to come.
Dr. Mark Friedman, an SSM Health cardiologist, notes that recent reductions in deaths due to cardiovascular disease are ascribable to both better prevention and treatment, as reported by the American Heart

Association. “Estimates are that more than half of the decline in deaths is attributed to a reduction in major risk factors such as decreased smoking rates, improved blood pressure control, and the widespread use of statins,” he says. “At the same time, the improved diagnosis of myocardial infarction (heart attack) in the acute setting and better treatment with stents and angioplasty have reduced death rates.”
Five key risk factors for heart disease continue to drive prevention tactics: high

blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and family history. To help control these factors, basic lifestyle choices remain most important. Regular exercise; maintaining a healthy weight; eating a diet composed of lean proteins, fish, whole grains, and plants; avoiding added sugars; and talking to your doctor about blood pressure and cholesterol management through medication, if needed, are key.
A more recent recommendation involves creating a healthy sleep pattern. “Too little sleep or, in some cases, too much sleep can be a risk factor for heart disease,” Friedman says. “This may be related to conditions such as sleep apnea, which is a major reversible cause of hypertension. Adequate sleep can reduce chronic inflammation and stress hormones.”
Advances in imaging, particularly the use of CT coronary calcium scoring, also help physicians and patients manage cardiac risks and potentially prevent a cardiac event. A simple CT scan of the heart’s arteries can indicate where plaque is present, providing information that can lead to more aggressive preventive measures such as taking a statin to lower cholesterol.
“People continue to ignore the importance of prevention,” Friedman says. “We have the ability now to accurately estimate one’s cardiac risk years before a heart attack or stroke might occur.”

here are always a few plants I want in my garden that I cannot count on finding in the local spring market.
Moonflowers, newer varieties of morning glories, and ‘Sweet Million’ cherry tomatoes are particular favorites rarely seen for sale. My vigorous perennial chard and favorite ‘Astro’ arugula can be direct sown, but starting them inside allows for a much earlier harvest.
Now is the time to schedule your indoor seeding based on outdoor transplanting dates. Cold-tolerant crops like kale can be planted well before our regional frost-free date.
Last year, I tried out some new materials for seed growing. My best discovery was the reusable silicone/ rigid plastic seed pot. Locally available are the Burpee’s version. I also ordered some smaller ones online because I wanted them with high, clear, ventilated covers included. Both brands worked exceedingly well. The stiff plastic upper holds the shape of the pot well and the soft, flexible bottom lets you pop out the finished seedling without damaging the tender young roots. Look for square models with drainage slits. They should come with matching drain pans.

hydrating it, I’ll mix in some perlite or vermiculite.
It is best to mix your seed-starting medium a day or two early so that the moisture content can equalize throughout. Make sure that all the tools – mixing containers, potting surfaces, and labels – have been sanitized in the dishwasher or with a dilute chlorine bleach solution to prevent deadly fungal contamination to which tiny seedlings are very vulnerable.

Coconut coir blocks are readily available now and, as a renewable product, are a passable substitute for non-sustainably harvested peat moss. I didn’t like using it straight, so this year, after
Adding electric heat mats under your propagation flats are key to high germination rates. The gentle warmth stimulates better seedling yield. The flats will dry out a little faster, so keep a close eye on things and water or mist as needed. Clear dome lids help to control moisture nicely. Add a bright, sunny window or artificial grow lights and you will be set up for success. I start vigorous plants, like moonflower, in larger size pots and fine seeds, such as dill or poppies, in smaller size cells, then move them up as needed. Add a misting of very dilute liquid fertilizer to keep them vigorous. Harden off seedlings gradually before planting to minimize temperature shock. I set mine out on the deck on warm days, then leave them out overnight a few times before transplanting.
Growing your own plants from seed opens up a whole new world of varietal choices and offers a great way to teach children invaluable basic gardening lessons.

Rest isn’t earned. It’s essential.
That’s the message behind Tailored Pieces, a St. Louis-based wellness brand founded in 2020 by LaParis Hawkins. Her business started in New York with hand-sewn satin bonnets created to protect hair from breakage and keep it hydrated. At the time, Hawkins worked as a freelance beauty writer and editor for ESSENCE and EBONY magazines, and she sought to design better bonnets based on her knowledge of the market.
“I started perfecting them – comparing them to what I was using and why it wasn’t working – to make sure that [Tailored Pieces bonnets] stay on most heads at night,” Hawkins describes, noting her elastic is made with authentic satin.
The satin reduces hair damage and frizz, plus preserves hairstyles by minimizing friction with a hair accessory or pillow. Reversible satin bonnets are still Tailored Pieces’ primary product – an inclusive concept “for everyone with hair” – but the brand has blossomed to further promote luxurious rest with shower caps and candles, plus accessories like satin-lined beanies and headbands.

Tailored Hobbies this summer as an escape from “the hustle and bustle of family and work.”
“I realized that it was just a common thing, like across all races and diasporas, that women just carry so much stress, having to manage not only their lives but people’s lives around them,” she says. “Let your hair down without having to take care of someone else, even if just for a day or two to take care of yourself, but we don’t want it to be a one-time thing. That’s why we’re implementing things that … slow down our daily lives and make it part of a routine.”
Hawkins says she made “a purposeful pivot” after her mother was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer and passed away in 2023. “My mom was just such an amazing woman, and I feel like she left me with so many tools to get through life,” Hawkins reflects. “But I also just realized I did not know how to take care of myself in the way of slowing down and resting, and what does that look like? And why do I feel guilty because I’m not doing anything today?”
Hawkins moved back to St. Louis, where she was born and raised, and felt compelled to support those who tirelessly support others. She started the Books & Bonnets club to foster community and is hopeful to launch
The first candle in Tailored Pieces’ newest collection is the 10-ounce Rest is Renewal Candle “crafted with a clean-burning, coconut-apricot wax blend and infused with a soothing mix” of pineapple, sage, and lemongrass, according to the website. Hawkins plans to release two additional calming candles this spring and host an event for interested customers to sample each scent and see other products in person. Currently, Tailored Pieces products are sold at tailoredpieces.com, and bonnets are featured in the gift shop at 21c Museum Hotel St. Louis.

Lisa Hu is adding more must-have bags to her accessory line that’s made to move with women through every chapter of life.
A strong female leader who began her career in corporate finance, Hu worked in fast-paced environments alongside other women trailblazers. “My days were full – meetings, travel, long hours – and I quickly realized there wasn’t a work bag designed for how women actually move through their lives,” she says.
Every style had a tradeoff: either functional or beautiful – not both, Hu explains. So, the St. Louis native decided to solve the market gap herself, launching Lux & Nyx in 2018 in her hometown by creating a work bag for the way women actually live and lead. “I wanted a bag that felt polished and intentional, but also made busy [lives] feel easier,” says the designer, who was selected for the 2019 Saint Louis Fashion Fund Incubator, earning an Arch Grant that took her business to the next level.
Unlike most handbags on the market, Lux & Nyx became a line designed by women who lead for women who lead – at work, home, and in the community. The origami-inspired design, with its clean, architectural, and quietly powerful aesthetic, makes each piece of the accessory

“Our backpacks and belt bags are our top sellers, especially at Nordstrom,” Hu notes. “This is incredibly meaningful to me – it tells me we’re solving a real need.”

collection instantly recognizable. Recently debuting in the line is a new mini origami flap bag, adding to the company’s luxe portfolio of shoulder, crossbody, tote, and belt bags to backpacks “that support full days and full lives,” Hu details: “Each piece is intentionally designed to transition seamlessly from work to travel to everyday moments.”
Find the sleek, sophisticated bags in classic beige, black, and brown shades to solid pops of red, pink, green, or blue hues on luxandnyx.com, and shop styles locally at City Foundry STL as well as at Nordstrom and Macy’s. The brand also recently launched its
The multi-compartment backpack features matte black hardware, a water-resistant polyester interior, and special spots for all your accessories, from a laptop to sunglasses, to stay effortlessly organized. Similarly, the weather-, stain-, and scratch-resistant belt bags boast an easy access front pocket for a smartphone, interior slots to secure credit cards, and discreet storage to keep valuables safe. “Customers love them because they combine sculptural style with smart organization,” Hu says. “Every pocket, strap, and closure is designed around real life [for] comfort, balance, and ease of movement.”
Drawing from her finance background, the founder says her designs have purpose and sustainability in mind: “We pair timeless color palettes with durable, high-quality materials chosen for longevity, and we work closely with our manufacturing partners to ensure every piece is crafted with care and built to last.”
Great design should feel beautiful on the outside and effortless on the inside, Hu notes: “Our bags are meant to catch your eye first –naturally [inviting] compliments, but what makes customers stay is how intuitive they are to use. Beauty draws you in; function makes you stay.”

Local artist Kimberlyn Renee creates standout works of art using fluorescent color, black backgrounds, 3D elements, and UVreactive and phosphorescent mediums. The self-taught surrealist pop artist aims to bring color back into what she sees as an increasingly colorless world.
“I’ve always been drawn to very bright, punch-you-in-the-face colors. While my color palettes definitely come down to personal taste, I also think of it as a response to living in the ‘millennial beige’ era,” Renee says. “Looking at how cultural aesthetics have changed over the years, we are currently living in a very colorless world, both literally and metaphorically. From our cars and our clothes to our choice of design and everyday products, everything has become so lackluster and missing any personality. I just want to bring back a little bit of that missing color and whimsy of days gone by.”

Renee’s work plays with the line between the familiar and the fantastical. Her paintings focus on pop culture and themes of sentimentality or whimsy, often incorporating childhood candies and cereals, including Runts, Swedish Fish, and Lucky Charms, and using playful imagery to tap into memories from her youth.
“I try to connect with peoples’ inner child through my 3D and lightreactive elements as well as using subject matter that evokes a sense of nostalgia from viewers,” she says. “Whether it was their favorite snack, toy, or video game, seeing an object from their past often brings instant joy to people. I think that is because the connections we formed with different objects or media as children really stand the test of time and even strengthen through the years.”
Before pursuing art full time in 2023, Renee graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in business, an experience that prepared her for the behind-the-scenes efforts that come with being a working artist.
“People think being an artist is mainly just about making the art, but there are so many different hats I have to wear, [such as] being my own social media manager, financial manager, marketer, and more,” the artist explains. “When it’s all said and done, actually making the art is only a fraction of what being a full-time artist is.”
Through her art, Renee strikes an intentional balance between playfulness and introspection to create work that feels both accessible and meaningful. “I want viewers to be reminded of who they were as kids, unafraid, imaginative, curious, and not yet jaded by the world around them,” Renee adds. “I think if we all found a way to get back to that state of mind, the world would be a happier place.”

If you live in St. Louis, it’s likely you’ll uncover passageways into the city’s past. This is true for the 465 acres of land once home to the residents of Mill Creek Valley, though only four major structures from the predominantly Black neighborhood exist today. The site was leveled by the city in 1959.
Despite this erasure and epic loss – a product of “urban renewal policies that cleared entire neighborhoods in the name of economic and commercial development,” as noted by Gabrielle Hays for PBS News – a few physical memorials, new and old, persist.
At its height, Mill Creek Valley was one of the most populous and culturally significant Black communities in the U.S., rivaling Harlem in New York City and Bronzeville in Chicago. By World War II, nearly 20,000 people – most of them Black – lived in Mill Creek Valley. “These new St. Louisans, part of the first [and second waves] of the Great Migration, found work and established communities of their own,” write Bailey Stock and Andrew Wanko for The St. Louis American, the city’s longest continuously running published weekly newspaper and the region’s leading Black publication.
The streets of Mill Creek Valley “flourished with stores, churches, bars, and nightclubs,” write Stock and Wanko. Artistic spaces like the Midtown Hotel’s Peacock Alley jazz club and the YWCA, Phillis Wheatley Branch, welcomed author and activist W.E.B. Du Bois and poet Maya Angelou. International jazz sensation Josephine Baker was born in Mill Creek Valley; ragtime composer Scott Joplin lived and worked there in the early 1900s.
The neighborhood’s major remaining buildings are Berea Presbyterian Church, now SLU’s “Il Monastero” center; the Dixie Cream Donut Flour Building; Vashon High, now part of HBCU Harris-Stowe; and the Dinks Parrish Laundry Building, now apartments. “It’s safe to assume that Vashon High was preserved because of its monumentality, and Dinks … because of its ornate architecture,” write Ashley Holder and Molly Calvo for Decoding the City. “But why [were] one church and one factory preserved while others were destroyed?”

Today, Energizer Park occupies part of the former Mill Creek Valley site and features the Pillars of the Valley memorial, with eight 15-foot columns marking where homes once stood. “‘There’s dual meaning behind the empty chamber at the center of each pillar,’ said Damon Davis, an East St. Louis native whose design was selected for the project,” notes Hays. “It is ‘not only an empty chamber … in an hourglass, but it’s also a portal or doorway into someone’s home.’”
Although most of its buildings are gone, the spirit of Mill Creek Valley permeates St. Louis, passing through both physical and metaphorical doorways. Its rise and destruction stand as testimony to the neighborhood’s displaced residents and the inequities they faced.

At DD Mau, co-owners Julie Truong and Andrew Shih have fostered a brand that reflects their fun-loving personalities and each of their individual upbringings in the restaurant industry. The married couple unveiled a new Webster Groves location in November for their Vietnamese-centric concept that is twice the size of its previous home in the neighborhood.
In 2018, Truong opened the first location of DD Mau in Maryland Heights. The name is a play on words for a Vietnamese phrase that means “to go quickly,” in reference to the restaurant’s fast-casual nature. There, she cooks family recipes for traditional Vietnamese dishes including her signature pho as well as modern takes on casual Asian cuisine such as bao sliders and tacos on flaky roti. The restaurant is also where she and Shih first met, when he came in as a customer seven years ago.
The food lovers each grew up helping out with their family businesses – Truong with her family’s restaurant, Vinh Chop Suey, and Shih with his parents’ eatery, Hot Wok Café – and developed a passion for cooking fresh, flavorful Asian fare for others to enjoy from an early age. Truong spent a decade in the fashion and marketing industry before pursuing a longtime dream to open her own place, while Shih established PokeDoke with his siblings.
In 2021, Truong opened the second location of DD Mau in New Webster, and Shih sold his shares of PokeDoke to join DD Mau full time the following year. With the flagship store’s recent relocation to Old Orchard, the popular business is bigger and better than ever, offering an expanded 150-seat capacity for guests and new menu items including lo mein and handmade steamed dumplings that touches upon the duo’s Chinese heritage.
TAO+LEE designed the naturally lit interior,

with relaxing yet lively contemporary features and highlighted by natural wood tones, hanging rattan lights, mint green accents, and a vinyl wall embellished with depictions of DD Mau’s standout dishes. Choose from highlights such as banh mi, spring rolls, and fried rice to pair with house drinks – Vietnamese iced coffee, Thai Tea, and lychee limeade, to name a few. Bún bò Huế, or spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup, is another wholesome new addition featuring a Truong family recipe.

“I hope to continue serving great Vietnamese food to the community of St. Louis and giving the best service and food to everyone,” Truong says. “We are so thankful for everyone who has supported us throughout this journey.”
DD Mau’s Webster Groves location is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Return to Base of Missouri hosted their 2nd annual Vanguard Dinner in late January at Sunset 44 Bistro & Banquet in Kirkwood. The Vanguard dinner recognizes supporters of the organization who gathered for cocktails, dinner and a presentation to celebrate the accomplishments over the last year. Vice President Jack Lawler welcomed guests to the event while President Mark C. Lear spoke about Return to Base of Missouri’s mission to create high-quality, accessible recreation camp for veterans and their families and provided an update on the progress. Jeremiah DeGuire gave an inspirational speech about his experiences at the RTBMO Basecamp with his family.

“For so many veterans, life after service comes with challenges we don’t talk about enough: isolation, anxiety, and a longing for purpose. Return to Base of Missouri gives veterans the tools to reconnect with nature, find peace in the hunt, and rediscover the community we miss. It’s not just about the outdoors; it’s about restoring something within us.”
