letter

from the

EDITOR ‌LIKE MANY KIDS, WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, ALL I WANTED WAS a puppy. Although we had a family dog, I couldn’t wait to have my own dog one day. It wasn’t until I was 23 years old and saw an ad in the newspaper for golden retriever-Irish setter puppies – both breeds I adore – that I knew I was ready to become a pet parent. Not even a day later, I was driving home with the newest addition to my family. Although the early days of puppyhood were “ruff” – she wasted no time destroying walls, eating clothes and just generally getting into household accidents – I wouldn’t trade my, now, 70-pound lapdog for anything. In this week’s The Daily section, puppy-obsessed LN staff writer Robyn Dexter shares the story of Stolie, a 2-year-old female terrier mix, and her family, the Urdas. The Urdas’ story, featured on p. 57, not only illustrates how much a dog can transform your life in such a short amount of time but also shows how wonderful a thing it is to give dogs a second chance at a loving family. Also showcased in this week’s The Daily, LN contributing writer Sherrie Castellano shares a healthy take on an all-time fall favorite: s’mores. Find her recipe on p. 56 – I know I can’t wait to give this twist on a classic treat a try. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

ar brings devastation – and also new perspective with it. The Saint Louis Art Museum explores the theme of war in artists’ renderings to capture that reflective position during tumultuous periods in time. Its newest exhibition explores the development of Japan as a modern nation and a military power in East Asia in “Conflicts of Interest: Art and War in Modern Japan.” “We’re very excited to see this exhibit, which opens Oct. 16 [and has been] in the making for six years, come to fruition,” Philip Hu, the associate curator of Asian art, says. “In 2010, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Lowenhaupt gave the bulk of their [private] collection to the art museum, and in the years after, have continued to acquire things, which they’ve immediately gifted [as well]. We’re grateful for that and hope it will provide a wonderful view into St. Louis art collecting.” The exhibition encompasses the period between 1868 and 1942. “On the front end, 1868 is very important because that was the year Japan decided to become a modern nation. It got rid of all the shoguns, restored the emperor to absolute Kawase Hasui, Japanese, 1883–1957; engraved by Watanabe tadasu, Japanese, active mid to late 20th century; published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, Japanese, 1885–1962; Shōwa power and became a westernized, period The Red Setting Sun, 1937; color woodblock print; Saint Louis art Museum, Gift of modern civilization,” Hu explains. Mr. and Mrs. Charles a. Lowenhaupt 255:2014 “We end in 1942 because that is the date of the last object [in the collection], which depicts the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was made one year after the attack to commemorate that important event in world history.” The extraordinarily vast collection showcases a wide range of media, from hanging scrolls and folding screens to game boards, cards, textiles and kimonos. “It is art you can both play with and wear,” he says. “The single most important artist is Kobayashi Kiyochika, and we have many works by him.” Artworks that have never been duplicated also will be on display, with sketchbooks featuring distinctive creations by various artists. “People will be surprised for a number of reasons,” Hu promises. “A lot of this material has never been seen by the general public. Some items are rare to have survived. [The collection shows] to what degree the Japanese were able to aestheticize the idea of conflict and battle – of war. Normally when we think of these situations, we think deep and dark. This will be quite unexpected. Woodblock and painting techniques show bright colors in [surprising] ways.” The museum’s newest exhibition builds upon a theme seen in some of the current collections, including “Impressions of War.” “You can see the notion of war from a European point of

18

view through the famous artist Goya. There also is an exhibition called ‘Textiles: Politics and Patriotism,’” Hu says. “All of these tie into a larger theme of art and war, and how artists show difficult points of time in history using different materials.” An artist’s perception of pivotal times can extract a deeper meaning of how warfare is ingrained into our very fiber as human beings. “We want to convey that art doesn’t stop during difficult times. It has an important part to play in history,” Hu says. “The artists choosing to convey these events are trying to [share] messages that aren’t necessarily about beauty but about the human condition. They challenge us to think about our past, present and future.” This inspired collection from the Far East further investigates the universality of war and its inherent part in the world. T

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

he Women’s Foundation of Greater Saint Louis recently held its annual Making a Difference event at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac. This year, author Susan Solovic gave the keynote speech, titled “Stronger Women for a Better Community.” The event also looked at issues that impact women and girls in the region. The organization focuses on specific economic challenges faced by females – particularly those who lack the education, community connections and family support to succeed in traditional work environments – a key issue for the next 18 months. Local entrepreneur and philanthropist Martha Uhlhorn received the Making a Difference Award for 2016. Co-chairing the event were Maureen McCarthy and Deb Zimmerman.

GATSBY GLAMOUR

By Sarah Kloepple

J

ulie Abner of Julie Abner Interiors was tasked with modernizing the powder room of this 1920s Art Deco house in Ladue, which had its original tiles and mirrors, and blending it into the home’s other contemporary updates. Abner brought in Chouteau Building Group for the construction, which included changing the layout for better functionality and flow. From there, Abner’s design stuck with the 1920s flavor of the home’s origin with a focus on the contemporary. An accent wall, partially visible in the mirror’s reflection, is made with tiles from Ann Sacks. The walls pictured are covered with a Phillip Jeffries Grasscloth wallpaper. “I wanted the room to have a lot of interest but also be subtle,” Abner says. “The different textures give it dimension.” Floating walnut cabinets are covered with a natural stone countertop, and the client found the ornate mirror on 1stdibs.com, an online marketplace for furniture and fine art. Overall, Abner says the powder room mixes wood, organic and metal materials. She adds the client was open to the combination, and the project was ultimately a team effort.

entry Foyer, Staircase Landing and First-Floor Landing DESIGNErS: Channing Glover and Maria Lesko of C&M Interiors The wide-entry foyer turned out to be the perfect blank slate for designers Channing Glover and Maria Lesko at C&M Interiors, with its stunning original floor-to-ceiling mirror reflecting the grand staircase leading to a second-floor sitting area. Glover and Lesko transformed these transitional spaces by marrying traditional elements – such as an ultra-utilitarian antique first-floor settee – with their signature contemporary aesthetic. “We’re incorporating interesting color palettes – really bold red, green, black and different shades of gray,” Lesko says. “We’re trying to incorporate a little traditional design while keeping it contemporary with certain pieces.” C&M Interiors, 314-920-3020, candmstudio.com

The second-floor foyer features the boldly patterned Chiang Mai Dragon wall covering by Schumacher, which ties in the accent colors used throughout the spaces.

An antique settee in the first-floor foyer is reupholstered with green velvet accent pillows to tie in the classic aesthetic with the designers’ modern palette.

A clear glass chandelier by Wilson Lighting makes a contemporary statement upon entering the home.

Walls are painted with Porter Paints’ Umber Cloud, giving just the right amount of neutral background to allow bold accent colors to pop.

A sleek pendant by Foscarini hangs over the central table by Marcel Wanders, creating a focal point in the second-floor foyer seating area.

Accent pieces in the living room, including lamps, a hanging ceiling fixture, a fireplace screen and a side table, create a cohesive, high-design feel.

DESIGnER: Vicki Dreste of Victoria Dreste Designs Before even setting foot into the Show House this year, Vicki Dreste of Victoria Dreste Designs already had an idea of the design aesthetic she wanted to pursue – she just needed to find the perfect room to bring her vision to life. “When I walked into the house and saw the living room, I knew that was the space for it,” Dreste says. Rich natural light pouring in from the room’s tall, front-facing windows allowed Dreste to use Havana Green, a deep, saturated teal, on the walls and Blazer, a dark blue, both from Sherwin-Williams’ Victoria Dreste Signature Colors collection, which are available through Victoria Dreste Designs. These dark colors were the backdrop for lighter vanilla, cream, white and gold-toned furniture and accents throughout the room, which Dreste describes as a reimagining of the home’s glory days and an update to the Victorian parlor space for today’s style of living and entertaining. Dining Room DESIGnERS: Teddy Karl and Melissa Hummel of The Great Cover-Up At first glance, the home’s grand dining room needed a mood shift as well as an update: Even with its dramatic windows, the space, according to The Great Cover-Up principal designer Teddy Karl, was dark and dreary. Karl and senior designer Melissa Hummel are known for their rich, traditional interiors, and they transformed the dining space with an Asian-inspired blue-and-white palette. “We wanted to see pattern-on-pattern in this space,” Karl says. The biggest design challenge was the fireplace, which the designers felt was small for the room, but vases and urns adorning the mantel create height and add grandeur to the built-in feature. The Great Cover-Up, 9708 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-995-5701, greatcoverupdesign.com

Window treatments and walls are in the same print from Thibaut and make the room feel larger.

A hand-knotted Afghan Sultanabad rug anchors the room with deep, rich tones, adding extra dashes of color to an otherwise blue-hued space.

A large, gilded gold-leaf pagoda mirror over the mahogany sideboard creates openness and is flanked by large Chinese-export porcelain lamps.

A traditional darkmahogany table is set with Mottahedeh’s Blue Dragon place settings and cobalt glassware, while shield-back chairs in a traditional cutvelvet leopard print are flanked by host-andhostess parson-style chairs in a blue-andwhite color block.

With the

FUTURe in “I create more than interiors, I interpret the personality of the individual or corporation. From the initial meeting through the creation of the residential or business environment, I listen, then provide the perfect balance between style and comfort. A balanced, designed space is part of one’s well-being.” This is the philosophy of Scott Tjaden of Tjaden Interiors. He describes himself as “not cookie-cutter” as a designer. “I think a lot of people go to a designer because they want a certain look, but I’d rather help you make it your own,” he says. When Tjaden meets clients, he asks them what a day in their life is like, to get an idea of how their space will be used. Oftentimes, he says, some of the things clients want in their home may not really be conducive to their lifestyle. Tjaden notes the

process of “wayfinding,” an architectural term that encompasses how people get from point A to point B and what the traffic pattern is like. He asks his clients what they want to highlight about their home and what aspects of their home they’d rather visitors not see upon walking in. These questions help Tjaden and his client get on the same page and realize the realities and visions for the space. “I design for people,” he says. “I design with the future in mind.” More than 50 percent of his clients are people who have tried to do the design process on their own unsuccessfully, and Tjaden “comes in and fixes it.” Oftentimes, he says, builders or contractors have done the design, but they don’t always have the experience in interior design to give the client the look he or she really wants and needs.

“They don’t always think through all the questions I go through,” he says. “Sometimes it’s helpful even when you’re in the early building stages to have an interior designer in those initial meetings. It saves time later.” Tjaden’s passion for design stems from design of all sorts. He notes that design is a reflection of history and contemporary living. “We are living history,” he says. “[Design] goes from jewelry to paintings to sculpture and beyond.” As for his own personal style, Tjaden describes it in a very broad sense. “I like quality over quantity,” he says. “I would rather a client have five things in a room that are beautiful than 30 things that don’t hold up over time. You don’t want to have to redecorate every other year.”

Style Speak

Q&A

with Tara Ellef, President, Soft Surroundings By Denise Kruse ‌Soft Surroundings, the St. Louis-based women’s lifestyle brand, began as a clothing catalog in 1999, opening its flagship store in Richmond Heights in 2005. Since then, the brand has expanded to include jewelry and accessories, shoes, bedding, home décor, furniture and beauty products, growing to nearly 50 stores in 18 states. The brand seeks to give busy women a place to invest time in themselves, while never sacrificing comfort for style – every textile in the store, both clothing and bedding, is softness-rated. Earlier this year, Soft Surroundings appointed Tara Ellef as president, succeeding the brand’s founder, Robin Sheldon. Ladue News spoke with Ellef to learn a little more about her background, as well as the Oct. 18 Fashion Visionaries Luncheon Series installment featuring Ellef and the Soft Surroundings brand, presented by Fashion Group International.

What is the softness rating? The softness rating is a standard that our design teams hold themselves accountable for delivering to our customers. It is our belief that how you feel during the day is a direct reflection of how you feel in your clothes. So all of our fabrics that come in contact with your skin are given a softness rating of one to three “clouds,” with three clouds representing the ultimate softness. Tell us about the Fashion Group International event, Oct. 18 at Washington University in St. Louis. What can attendees expect? I am excited to share how the brand got started, its purpose and the experience that we strive to achieve across all the customer touch points. I’m honored to be a part of this insightful series from Fashion Group International of St. Louis; it will be a great way to spread our #LiveSoft message here locally, staying true to our demographic – and taking them on a journey that allows them to put themselves first is so key to our brand. I’m looking forward to this event!

ln

Soft Surroundings, 33 The Boulevard, Richmond Heights, 314-262-4949, softsurroundings.com

Tell us a little more about your background – are you from St. Louis? How did you get your start in the Soft Surroundings brand? I grew up in Connecticut and started my career working in a store in Maryland called Carroll Reed. I loved merchandising the store and working with customers, and that’s where it all began. After Carroll Reed, I spent almost 10 years at Ann Taylor and was so lucky to be a part of the team that started LOFT. I later went to Lands’ End and learned the catalog business and the meaning behind putting the customer first. I started at Soft Surroundings two years ago, and was introduced to the brand when [CEO] Tom Wilcher and Robin Sheldon called me about joining the team. Once I heard about the brand and their mission, I was hooked! What is the feeling you want customers to have as they experience Soft Surroundings for the first – or even, fifth – time? It’s interesting … If you watch women enter our stores, you can actually hear them exhale and relax their shoulders and smile. It’s in that moment that we know we have captured the spirit of the brand. [The customer] has entered into a space where she can be good to herself. Are items Soft Surroundings’ private label? How/where are these manufactured? Almost all of the products (apparel, bedding and accessories) that we offer our customers are exclusive to Soft Surroundings. Soft Surroundings has an in-house design team that designs a large percentage of our products.

E

asy as pi.” “Cactus makes perfect.” “Anything’s popsicle.” “I got your back … pack.” Jen Shank has been told time and again she speaks in puns. And in recent years, those witty phrases have made their way onto her freespirited line of handmade children’s clothing: Swanky Shank. As a youngster, Shank channeled her creativity into a variety of media, from sewing, papercrafting, painting and stamping to photography and writing – and even cutting the hair of her Barbie doll and furry cat. As she grew up and became a preschool teacher, she never lost her self-described “childlike imagination.” In 2006, her daughter was born – and just a few years later, so was the idea for Swanky Shank. “The creative force burst the levees,” she says, explaining that her baby became a cute new canvas for all of her artsy creations. Swanky Shank, which officially launched in 2011, offers one-of-a-kind pieces that parents can’t find in big-box stores, Shank notes. Amid an adorably decorated design studio in Ellisville, where canvases of swanky models cover the walls and music blasts in the background, Shank says she is constantly coming up with new pieces to add to her line for girls and boys – from babies through size 8. “We have taco Tuesdays and love to laugh as we sew, dye, cut and create,” she says. “My kiddos [10-year-old Cesilia and 7-year-old Ollie] pop in and out and have been known to create their own little masterpieces alongside us – and they love modeling their mom’s clothes!” Many of Swanky Shank’s T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, tank tops, bodysuits, skirts, pants, hats and onesies are hand-dyed, hand-stamped and hand-cut from rare fabrics like duck canvas, with unexpected embellishments such as bows, frills, fringe, flowers, elbow and knee patches, and custom stamping. “We also love buying designer fabrics on spoonflower.com, and we nab vintage fabrics whenever we find them,” Shank says. “We try not to use too common of fabrics so we can stay unique and free-spirited like we love.” Shank keeps the clothing modern with a vintage twist by mixing quirky colors, whimsical illustrations and comical typography. “Whether I am hiking with my family or attending a live performance at the Fox Theatre, I’m always inspired by colors and beauty,” she says. “I love pairing unusual colors like mint and burgundy.” Just in time for fall, the line showcases shirts

that say “Pump king,” featuring a pumpkin, or “You’re my boo,” with a ghost. For the holiday season, kids’ tops range from “A plateful of grateful” featuring a plate and silverware to “All about that baste,” with a turkey. The most popular piece, a “Hello, my name is” hand-dyed onesie, also still is being offered, along with tees referencing the child’s age, including “1 Month” or sibling “Big,” “Mid” and “Lil.” There are even “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” onesies (inspired by The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss) available for twins. In addition to clothing, the line includes inspirational – and comical – notecards and magnets, with sayings such as “A latte love.” Although the children’s clothing line is based in St. Louis, it can be shipped across the country from swankyshank.com or purchased at dozens of boutiques throughout the nation, mostly in the Midwest. “A common reaction I often hear is ‘I wish I would have found y’all sooner!’” Shank says. “[That] makes my day every time.” Shank says her small business is doubling sales each year, and the staff also has expanded to six – not only to keep up with a growing waitlist for items but also to add new pieces to the line each month and contribute to the charitable cause The Gold Hope Project, which provides free portrait sessions to children battling cancer. “No matter how large we grow, we will always deliver the handmade touch – because that’s who we are,” Shank notes. As she works on new holiday-related designs, Shank always keeps in mind the kids who will be wearing her fresh, fun threads. “It is such an amazing thing to connect with sweet moms across the world [who] trust me with making a one-of-a-kind piece for their most precious people, and that is such an honor,” Shank says. “I get to sell my art, but I also get to participate in life stories by sending personalized gifts to loved ones, decorating for baby showers and ‘swankifying’ people’s lives. That fills me with gratitude.” Swanky Shank, swankyshank.com

‌Mr. and Mrs. Jay and Maria Shields of Frontenac are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Marguerite Grace, to Mark Lorin (Ren), son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark and Julie Mullinix of Richmond, Virginia. Grandparents Mr. and the late Mrs. John and Claire Shields of Ladue and Mr. and Mrs. Pete and Nancy Piccione of University City join in celebrating the happy news. The bride-to-be graduated in 2007 from Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas (KU). She works as a stylist for Trunk Club in Chicago. The future groom graduated in 2006 from Claremont High School in California and earned his bachelor’s degree from KU. He is a managing consultant at Navigant in the health care strategy practice. The couple first met at KU, kindling a romance in 2009 at the St. Louis Mardi Gras parade in Soulard. When they both found themselves at the Great Grizzly Bear Bar, Ren asked for Marguerite’s phone number. They returned seven years later to the bar, and Ren took a knee (in a puddle of water) to ask for Marguerite’s hand in marriage. The couple plans to wed on June 10 next year at Our Lady of Lourdes, with a reception to follow at St. Louis Country Club. After honeymooning in Italy along the Amalfi Coast, they will reside in Chicago.

Kathryn Trout & Douglas Ackerman

By Amanda Dahl

athryn (Katie) O’Brien Trout met Douglas (Doug) Martin Ackerman at the wedding of some mutual friends, not knowing, one day, the celebration would be for them. “We met again a couple of years later at a charity event and went on our first date,” Katie says. “I soon [went] to Rome to witness the papal conclave, where Pope Francis was elected. Doug and I racked up a huge phone bill across the ocean.” She knew from that initial separation Doug might be the one to change everything. “The first time I met Katie, I had to get to know her better,” Doug says. “She gave me that special feeling I have been looking for all my life.” The next step seemed natural. With a ready excuse to take them to the Windy City, he set out to plan a proposal. “There is a charming Italian restaurant she loves; I knew that would be the place. All I had to do was book a nice place to stay, fuel the plane – and let Chicago do the rest,” Doug tells. Caught by surprise, Katie said yes through blinding tears. The wedding represented the three pillars of their lives. “We wanted to incorporate faith, family and friends,” she says. “We knew the wedding needed to be in Rome, where our love story began. Thanks to my family’s dear friend, His Eminence Justin Cardinal Rigali, we got married inside St. Peter’s Basilica, which has always been a dream of mine.” The bride honored Doug’s deceased mother by bearing her school pin, alongside her mother’s, on her bouquet. She also carried a rosary, gifted by her matron of honor and grandmother. “My dad and I took a long walk, with the Swiss Guard escorting and holding tourists back, to the chapel. The ‘Wedding March,’ which is no longer allowed to be played in the states at Catholic weddings, swelled from the organ,” Katie recalls. “I saw Doug face-to-face for the first time that day, and my heart skipped. It all got very real at that moment.” Doug experienced a similar sensation upon seeing his bride across the aisle. “I cherished the sight of the most beautiful woman in the world, standing in the middle of St. Peter’s Basilica – ready to marry me – and the overwhelming presence of God,” he says. “It was like we were in a fairy tale.” The celebrations continued with a luncheon at their Italian hotel and, again, in St. Louis at the Racquet Club. The couple honeymooned in Tuscany and Portofino.

S’mores With Granola “Graham” Crackers and Cardamom Pears

‌N

Story, recipe and photography by Sherrie Castellano

o matter the season, there’s nothing that evokes chilly fall nights quite like cooking food over a fire. Some of my greatest childhood memories are of camping and cooking over a campfire alongside friends and family. Exhausted by the elements, we’d cap off long days by huddling around a fire at sunset, ready for dinner – and then dessert, of course. These granola “graham” cracker and cardamom-pear s’mores combine the best parts of the childhood favorite – crispy grahams, gooey marshmallows and silky-sweet chocolate – made with ingredients that are healthier and fancier than the classic version. Fire-roasted cardamom pears add a subtle sweetness to the dark chocolate used here, and the softness of the pears complements the texture of the chocolate and marshmallows, all sandwiched between crispy, oaty “graham” crackers.

S’mores With Granola “Graham” Crackers and Cardamom Pears Yields | 8 s’mores | Granola “Graham” Crackers 2¼ cups oats ¼ tsp sea salt 2 Tbsp butter ½ cup maple syrup Cardamom Pears 2 pears, quartered and cored ½ tsp ground cardamom 1 Tbsp maple syrup 2 pinches salt Assembly 8 marshmallows 8 squares dark chocolate (70 percent to 85 percent) | Preparation – Granola “Graham” Crackers | Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9- by 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, and set aside. In bowl of a food processor, gently pulse oats and salt until medium-coarse grind is achieved. Add butter and pulse a few seconds more. Transfer mixture to a mixing bowl. Add maple syrup and stir until well combined. Press mixture into bottom of prepared baking dish, and transfer to oven to bake, 10 minutes. Remove from oven and slice into squares inside dish. Allow crackers to cool completely, then remove parchment paper, and divide crackers into presliced portions. | Preparation – Cardamom Pears | Prepare a campfire or charcoal grill.

Prepare 2 foil pockets for pears. In each pocket, place 1 cored and quartered pear, ¼ teaspoon cardamom, ½ tablespoon maple syrup and pinch of salt. Close pockets and seal well. Place on top of red coals in campfire or grill, and roast until pears are soft, 10 to 15 minutes depending on heat of coals. When pears are finished roasting,

Stolie

AND THE URDA FAMILY ‌ONCE UPON A TIME, EMILY URDA

was looking for a family dog for her household. With a son with a disability, she knew the dog would have to be pretty special to fit into their family. She went to Stray Rescue of St. Louis to see if she could find one that would be a good addition to the family. While she was there, she spoke with adoption manager Valerie Strobo about service dogs. Urda had considered this option in years prior, but everything had been thousands of dollars, or her son Jackson was too young for the dog. “Then I met Stolie,” she says. “She seemed like she’d be a great fit for our family, so we decided to go for it.” Stolie was rescued by Stray Rescue in February and was enrolled in the Missouri Puppies for Parole program. The 2-year-old female terrier mix learned basic obedience at Missouri Eastern Correctional Center and received full training. Stolie knows “sit,” “stay” and “come,” along with being housebroken and walking great on a leash. Urda has only had Stolie for about a month, but she says the dog’s been an exceptional addition to the family. “It’s been so nice to see Jackson interact with her,” she says. “With his disability, he’s not really interactive with other kids and would rather be with adults. Now, he and Stolie are friends. It’s so sweet to see them together.” One of the things they’ve been working on with Stolie’s training is a hide-and-seek-type game where Jackson hides and Stolie has to find him.

By Robyn Dexter

“It’s so entertaining because he’s not very good at hiding, but she’s very good at finding him,” Urda says. Aside from her time with Jackson, Stolie enjoys hunting frogs outside and playing fetch with her ball. After Jackson’s asleep, she’ll curl up on Urda’s lap. “She’s probably around 70 pounds, but she’ll do whatever she can to get in your lap,” Urda says. “She climbed over the armrest yesterday to get into my lap.” Urda is still in the process of getting Stolie trained to meet Jackson’s needs, but “she’s as sweet as can be.” She says it took Jackson a few days to warm up to Stolie, but the dog is already very protective of the family. “Stray Rescue has just been so helpful with this whole process,” Urda says. “They’ve always been there right away to help. They did a great job of finding the perfect dog for our family.”

Considering a prenuptial agreement St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Many couples intending to marry begin planning for their future together in advance. In addition to planning an actual wedding ceremony and celebration, some choose to address certain issues pertaining to personal assets and future marital property. For various reasons, some determine that signing a prenuptial agreement is the best way to document separate property and establish procedures for issues that may arise in the future. By signing a formal agreement before marriage, an intended spouse can sometimes avoid lengthy court battles concerning property distribution should a future situation bring forth a need to address the issue. In light of the fact that not all marriages last a lifetime, many believe that conflicts 58   October 14, 2016 | LadueNews.com

in divorce may be avoided if a plan has already been set in place regarding assets and property distribution. Sometimes, it is possible to limit debt liability by assigning credit card debt, mortgage loans or other outstanding financial expenses to a particular spouse. Some say discussing such matters before marriage puts a damper on a relationship; however, some data suggests that when a divorce does occur, complications often arise concerning finances. Discussing such issues ahead of time and developing a plan of action may help prevent disagreements further down the line. Some couples choose to wait until after they are married to sign contracts regarding assets, property and debt liability. Whether a couple chooses to sign a prenuptial or a postnuptial

agreement, it is advisable to seek guidance from a family law attorney ahead of time because the laws pertaining to each type of agreement are different. For instance, if a couple wishes to address child-related matters, such issues cannot generally be included in a prenuptial agreement. Anyone with questions regarding such matters can obtain answers during a consultation with an experienced attorney in the area. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. TEST DRIVE: Jaguar

2017 F-Type R Story and photos by Ryan Scott

This fast cat has both attitude and table manners.

“B

eautiful car – what is it?” That query greeted me with predictable frequency in parking lots around St. Louis while I was driving Jaguar’s supercar. My answer typically prompted a confused look. “Jaguar, huh?” The usual suspects of 12-yearold boys’ bedroom posters are Porsches or Corvettes, and having driven those cars through the same city streets, I can testify this Jaguar snaps heads. (You’re welcome, chiropractors.) I admit I’m a sucker for a pretty face, and this mean cat has one of the most attractive you’ll see. From every angle, the sculpted sheet metal flows in a way that perfectly integrates aggression with elegance. Corvettes and Porsche 911s are beautiful cars in their own right, but by contrast, the F-Type’s form makes the ’vette look confused and the 911 look blasé – at least in the opinion of this humble reviewer. However, poetry in motion has been a hallmark of Jaguar since World War II, and with automotive-design superstar Ian Callum now at the helm, anything less would have ranked as a failure. After driving the supercharged V-6 version of the F-Type for LN’s convertibles buyers guide in May, I commented at length about the nonstop entertaining hilarity that exits its quad tailpipes. If that version turned the wick to 10, this V-8 goes seriously Spinal Tap and cranks it to 11. The F-Type grabs attention visually and demands it audibly. The spitting, snarling, popping chorus proves positively addictive. Even though it can be tamed with an active shutter valve in the exhaust, why would you ever do that? Much of my time driving the Jag passed looking for bridge overpasses and parking garages and then giggling as pedestrians dove for cover, thinking the New Madrid fault had just let loose. No doubt, the name of the game with the F-Type is entertainment. With its looks, 550 horsepower on tap and never-ending soundtrack, this beast wasn’t created to blend in at the Starbucks drive-through – it’s a car for extroverts. It doesn’t just involve getting noticed, though. The F-Type also delivers a thoroughly well-rounded driving experience. All necessary boxes were checked during the design and development of this car, and it delivers the performance goods expected in its category. When running a gauntlet of Jefferson County 20-mph switchbacks, the F-Type responded with precision and eagerness. Higher-speed sweepers showed this car’s impressive ultimate lateral grip and

confidence-inspiring stability. The F-Type will go exactly where you point it – but, alas, without much feel of what’s being rolled over, as is the case with almost everything these days. Its massive brakes, reminiscent of manhole covers, proved unflappable in hard use. Straight-line performance is, well, ample. Zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds would feel fast inside a bank vault, but to do it with that beautiful cacophony to your aft and the wind through your hair feels blistering. Gut-whacking thrust is delivered in any gear, and I’m happy to say that reports of coronary-inducing, tail-happy personalities are greatly controlled thanks to the new all-wheel-drive system. In fact, even with the traction control deactivated, it took a concerted effort to scare myself. Look everywhere, and you’ll see manufacturers employing the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission the F-Type includes, as well. But as it’s highly computer-controlled, ultimate success or failure depends on the sequence of 1s and 0s entered into its brain. The F-Type has a fast, smooth and ultraresponsive ZF cog. Just a glimpse reveals the F-Type to be fast – of course it is. But perhaps the biggest surprise? This cat also has exquisite table manners. Put the top up, and you’ll quickly forget its alter ego as the cabin volume drops to Zen-inducing levels. Take the suspension out of sport (dynamic) mode, and the ride becomes compliant and supple. The seats feel livable for long periods – perfect for extended road trips, assuming you pack light. The Jaguar F-Type R ranks as a brilliant car but finds itself in a room full of showstoppers. The honest truth is that it’s no “better” than its competitors, the Porsche 911 and Corvette. It doesn’t need to be, though; better in such rarified company represents a numbers game. Do you really care if it does 0 to 60 in 3.5 instead of 3.7? Does it matter if it pulls 1.02 Gs on a skidpad instead of 0.98 G? No. Rather, how the F-Type does those things – with a sly grin on its figurative face – leaves the lasting impression. In my opinion, Jaguar engineers made the right decision in sacrificing those last few percentage points of performance numbers in favor of pure entertainment. So successful is the complete package that even in the aforementioned rarified company, if I had roughly $100,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I’d need only decide how to configure my F-Type. HISTORY OF THE

e-type T

opics of fashion and design involve a consensus roughly as often as Texans and Californians agree on a President. Ask a group of automotive “experts” for their top 10 most beautiful cars of all time, and you’ll see a lot of different names on the lists. But one car sure to be near the top of the list from any expert worth his or her salt is the Jaguar E-Type. Consider this: New York City’s Museum of Modern Art displays just six autos, one being a dark-blue E-Type roadster. Some have suggested the E-Type’s near-perfect proportions and seductive, flowing organic shape happened by accident because its designer, Malcom Sayer, used mathematical principles searching for aerodynamic efficiency. Whether through luck or genius, the results remain undeniable –

so much so that Ferrari boss Enzo Ferrari proclaimed the E-Type “the most beautiful car ever made” (equivalent to Jimi Hendrix calling you the best guitarist of all time). Looks alone didn’t lead the E-Type to become as synonymous with the ’60s as the Beatles; its cuttingedge engineering also ranked as a deciding factor. Things like four-wheel disc brakes, front and rear independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a monocoque body all set it apart. And the 3.8-liter, straight-six engine making 265 horsepower propelled the E-type to 150 mph, making it the fastest production car in the world. Hollywood icons like Steve McQueen, Brigitte Bardot and Tony Curtis all owned E-Types. Pictured is the pristine ’65 E-Type owned by Jim

and Lisa Hendrix, longtime Jaguar aficionados. This car – in the family for nine years – came with a factory-leather interior and wool carpeting. The first year for the larger displacement, 4.2-liter motor was 1965. The Hendrixs purchased the car when a friend and local Jaguar club member passed away. On first inspection, the family fell in love, and it’s remained in their care since. Despite being showroom-fresh with immaculate paintwork, it’s no trailer queen – expect to see it on St. Louis roads during nice weather. Maintenance involves a family affair, with Jim and son Ben overseeing mechanical and paint issues and Lisa keeping the interior spotless. LadueNews.com | october 14, 2016

They enlisted to celebrate. In 1966, Richard L. Nix Sr. and his wife, Anita, founded the company with the goal to provide innovative catering solutions to the community in which they lived and worked. They wanted their customers to feel like guests at their own party, and that still rings true today. Butler’s Pantry in 2016 is in the hands of Richard’s son, Richard Nix Jr. His viewpoint is much the same as his father’s: He wants customers to be able to celebrate and enjoy, whether it’s at a birthday party, anniversary party, wedding reception or nonprofit event. To kick off the 50th year, the staff of Butler’s Pantry gathered at Ballpark Village to celebrate. the team delivering canned goods to a food pantry. “Our community really starts here at Butler’s Pantry with the team we work with the artistic services of local artist Nori Obata to every day,” Richard Nix Jr. says. “We like to say we’re not create beautiful one-of-a-kind platters to show their only a family business – we’re also a business family.” appreciation over the years. When one of their clients approached Butler’s Pantry about helping a group of Marines transitioning back into normal life, Nix and his staff jumped at the chance. “We were able to donate a few meals for them, and there was nothing greater than getting cheered on by those guys,” Nix said. Nix and his wife also pioneered a program in north St. Louis that focused on family dinners. Kids get together with their families in a church and get to enjoy time together without having to worry where their meal is coming from. Butler’s Pantry also works with Feed My People, which benefits from Butler’s Pantry’s excess products. “We’re being helped by the people who buy from us, so we go full circle with it,” Nix says. “We’re always trying to give back to the community we’re so thankful for.” 1414 Park Ave., St. Louis, 314-664-7689, butlerspantry.com

M

aplewood’s barbecue-and-burrito stand, the Q-Shack, recently took on a new brick-and-mortar form in Dogtown, The Red Shack. The Red Shack opened in a space formerly occupied by an insurance office, and its menu features a variety of Tex-Mex-style, fast-casual eats including tacos, burritos and more. The concept comes from Angie Lampert, who has worked with her father, Larry, for more than 15 years operating businesses including Lampert’s Plush Pig BBQ and the Q-Shack. The latter was open for two warm-weather seasons before the property was sold.

At The Red Shack, patrons order and pick up their meals from a tall counter in a 1,100-square-foot dining room outfitted with casual seating. For The Red Shack’s new menu, the Lamperts dropped their classic barbecue dishes and amped up the Mexican-inspired offerings. “It was time to move on,” Larry says. “The market is a lot different than it was back when we started. These days, it’s oversaturated [with barbecue eateries], so we’re focusing on tacos, burritos, enchiladas, combination plates and tamales instead. It’s great food that’s fast and cheap.” The menu begins with a variety of tacos available on soft flour or crispy-corn tortillas with lettuce, tomato,

By Mabel Suen cheese, red salsa and sour cream. Choose from taco meat, pork in red sauce, shredded chicken or shredded beef as the meat. The same proteins and fixings likewise are available wrapped in a soft, flour tortilla burrito. Fish tacos also are available and come in options including lemon-pepper salmon, grilled tilapia or a daily special. Additional meal selections include chicken or taco-meat enchiladas, loaded nachos and shredded chicken atop rice studded with black beans, peppers and cilantro. Sides include beef tamales, pinto beans, salsa, quesadillas, rice, sour cream and spicy pickles. Combo plates feature pairings such as a pork taco

& A Show Suspended

‌Story:  Isaac has hired a new man to help him in his window-washing business. He tells Benjamin that he selected his résumé out of many, and he’ll happily help him acclimate to his new – and perilous – position. While seated on a slender scaffold 25 stories in the air, Isaac instructs Benjamin on the basics of the job: how to mop a window, what motions to use and how to squeegee the window clean. Benjamin remains unsteady, suspended high above the ground, and clings to the safety rope attached to him. Isaac also advises him never to look down. Soon enough, it’s revealed that Isaac and Benjamin know each other from their native country, which Isaac had left several years before for the opportunity and hope of a new life in a western nation. Now, Benjamin, too, has journeyed far from home with a specific purpose in mind. Have Isaac and Benjamin both immigrated to the same foreign city by coincidence? Can they help each other adjust to their new lives and distance themselves from homesickness for their native land? Or is their relationship more adversarial than friendly? Highlights:  Upstream Theater opens its 12th season with the world premiere of a drama by Israeli playwright Maya Arad Yasur. Both taut and teaching in its execution, Suspended marks a thoughtful variation on an age-old story of revenge under Linda Kennedy’s studied direction. Also, engaging performances by Reginald Pierre and Phillip C. Dixon help elevate Upstream’s production beyond the script. Other Info:  While attempting not to reveal too much of the plot, the histories of the two characters seemingly conflict with some early decisions in the script. For the success of Upstream’s presentation of Suspended, it’s better to “suspend” logic and focus instead on the emotions revealed so expertly by Pierre and, to an extent, by Dixon. Pierre ranks as one of our area’s finest actors. He has a knack for developing seemingly minor traits in

By Mark Bretz

his characters in crafting finely honed interpretations. Here, his accent clearly identifies Isaac as an immigrant, perhaps a South African despite the playwright’s Israeli heritage. Yasur’s tale seems more symbolic than actual, though, so that constitutes no detriment. Dixon’s approach seems more understandable at first, given his character’s situation, but not as satisfying as the one-act tale unfolds. Still, in general, both actors deliver effective portrayals of men who have known each a very long time. Pierre especially is convincing when describing the horrors of his earlier life and the reasons for his immigration from his native country. He thoughtfully shapes Isaac’s every gesture, from the way he eats a carrot to his pantomime approach of looking “through” the people on the other side of skyscraper windows. As Benjamin wisely observes, “I’m scrubbing and scrubbing, but then I get it – the stain is inside, not outside.” Dialogue such as that underscores the symbolism prevalent in Yasur’s script, as Isaac and Benjamin are unheard outsiders to the more materially successful office workers on the other side of the windows. Cristie Johnston’s scenic design ironically lends a claustrophobic effect to the scaffold located in the wide outdoors. Onstage, both actors spend their entire time suspended by ropes from the ceiling, which helps create the illusion of their work’s physical perils. Suspended is an interesting play, albeit nothing you haven’t heard before. Upstream’s finely tuned interpretation eloquently elevates the story above what it might otherwise be.

The Red Shack also offers a so-called Chicago-style beef tamale in a boat smothered with pork in a red sauce on top of rice – the perfect treat before going to see Suspended at Upstream Theater. “This is a great location,” says Larry, adding that he’s getting ready to retire and hand the reins to his daughter. “I wish I was here 30 years ago. The people are nice, and the neighborhood is fantastic.”

Ready Readers

Dog-On Good Books

R

eady Readers sends more than 500 adult volunteers into preschools and day care centers to read with 10,000 low-income children; we like to think of it as the area’s youngest and biggest book club. Where most such clubs meet monthly, though, Ready Readers meets each week, inspiring all to develop a love of reading. This month, we’re reading Please, Puppy, Please by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, which balances simple rhymes and repetitive text with lushly colored illustrations by Kadir Nelson. Children and parents alike should love the innocence of the titular brown puppy and his mischievous adventures. (The rambunctious pup should keep your own children on their toes throughout the story.) Nelson’s art vividly depicts children’s widely ranging emotions; we see them looking happy, inquisitive, stern, alarmed, excited and, best of all, contented in love. The animals in the book also convey an amusing assortment of emotions, often matching their human partners’ feelings. The story’s children assume a quasi-parental role with the pup as they try to teach him rules, care for his needs and keep him safe. This should provide a natural opportunity for parents and kids to discuss

their roles in the family, the need for patience and cooperation, and the level of responsibility necessary to take care of others. With assistance from Purina, incidentally, Ready Readers is gifting each classroom a stuffed animal to accompany Please, Puppy, Please, making it possible for our kids to practice their nurturing and pet-parenting skills. Another Ready Readers favorite, Dog’s Colorful Day: A Messy Story About Colors and Counting, comes from author/illustrator Emma Dodd. The story follows Dog, a white pooch with a black spot on his left ear, who takes part in untidy activities between breakfast and bedtime. As a result, by the end of his interesting day, Dog has turned into a

By Sheila Oliveri

canine kaleidoscope, and young readers should enjoy keeping track of his ever-growing collection of spots. Although not realistic, Dodd’s illustrations should invite young readers’ eyes and prove instantly understandable. Also, the world as seen from Dog’s perspective should allow children to relate to this point of view. The text, meanwhile, features onomatopoeic words like squish, sploosh, splish and splat, making this a readaloud that should be fun for both readers and listeners. While many children’s authors try to add color or counting concepts to their books, they often fail to integrate them into the natural narrative flow. Dodd, though, manages to seamlessly weave the educational pieces into the fabric of Dog’s Colorful Day, making this a book to enjoy in a different way each time you read it.

ln

At Ready Readers, we know that “Kids Who Read Succeed!” Reading aloud daily provides a strong foundation for early literacy. If you enjoy reading with young children and sharing the magic of books, please consider volunteering for Ready Readers. Visit readyreaders.org for more information.

Tandem Tiki Tomes Those who’d like to delve further into the world of tiki should seek these two recent books, consulted often in researching this story: ● Beachbum Berry’s Potions of the Caribbean by Jeff Berry ● Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki by Martin Cate with Rebecca Cate

Add a bit of South Pacific sun and fun to your fall with these three drinks incorporating pineapple rum.

O

ne of the best things to come out of the recent cocktail renaissance is the resurgence of tiki – that spirited, over-thetop celebration of all things tropical. The movement, which would eventually be named tiki for the totems prevalent on South Pacific islands, began in the 1930s in large part thanks to the work of two visionaries: Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt (who later took the name Donn Beach) and Victor Jules Bergeron. Gantt was born in Texas but traveled widely as a young man before finally putting down roots in Los Angeles in the early 1930s. Eventually, he opened a small café, decorating it with all sorts of tropical artifacts he’d acquired in his travels, and called it Don’s Beachcomber Cafe. Gantt left for the West Coast after some time to spread the gospel of tiki in Hawaii. Meanwhile, Bergeron had opened a small bar called Hinky Dinks in Oakland, California, at roughly the same time Gantt opened his spot. Bergeron decided to travel a bit to gain inspiration for his place and spent time soaking up the atmosphere (and drinks) in places like New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. But he got really fired up when he discovered Don’s Beachcomber Cafe just up the road. He went back to Oakland with visions of rum and palm trees and subsequently opened the first Trader Vic’s in the late 1930s; by the end of the 1960s, some 25 Trader Vic’s locations dotted the country. By the end of the 1960s, though, the tiki craze was waning. National tastes were changing. Vodka gained favor over rum, and premixed ingredients were being chosen over fresh juices. Many of the so-called tiki places that sprang up didn’t have the attention to detail and quality food and drink that

Caught in the Undertow

Don’s Beachcomber Cafe and Trader Vic’s were famous for. These summarily diluted the trend and were considered tired and kitschy. Thankfully, tiki once again is enjoying an upswing, with joints like Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago and Latitude 29 in NOLA, among many others, helping to usher in a new age of tiki. Local watering holes like Taste, The Libertine, Retreat Gastropub and Planter’s House continue to offer tiki drinks that adhere to the tradition, as well. Although other spirits make appearances in tiki concoctions, rum is definitely king in that realm. A new offering really ups the ante for those looking to bolster classic drinks or create new ones: Plantation Pineapple Rum. This spirit is big and rich, with hints of baking spices; the pineapple’s definitely there, but well-balanced as a subtle part of the overall flavor of the rum, not a dominant note. The spirit was created by Plantation’s cellar master, Alexandre Gabriel, and renowned cocktail historian David Wondrich. It was originally made as a one-off project, intended to be passed around to friends at Tales of the Cocktail festival series in New Orleans a couple of years ago – but folks began clamoring for it to be officially released to the general public. So after a brief hiatus, it’s finally returned to shelves and backbars across town. Plantation Pineapple Rum tastes perfectly at home by itself in a glass with an ice cube or two, and it makes a pretty fabulous daiquiri, as well. But its flavor profile lends itself to all sorts of mixing – and not just tiki-inspired libations. The following three cocktails from some of the best mixologists in town use the rum in unique and unexpected ways.
