Turning the calendar over to September and bidding adieu to summer is always bittersweet –but this edition of LN is packed with the sweet stuff.

Last year, LN expanded our annual fall State of the Arts feature into a full special edition, and this year we maintained the new tradition with several profiles and previews of metro artists, organizations and events bringing the local arts scene to life. Start perusing some of St. Louis’ most exciting dance, music, theater and visual arts heroes and happenings on p. 57.

While you’re adding events to your autumn calendar, make sure to check out contributing writer Megan Rubenstein’s ultimate Oktoberfest guide on p. 74. From mid-September to late October, various Missouri and Illinois locales will be offering their best in brews, food and music, so you’re sure to find one (or two) that strikes your fancy. And, after carb loading on Bavarian pretzels, turn to p. 76 for two local experts’ advice for training for this year’s upcoming turkey trots and fun runs.

Happy reading,

Period Preparedness

Tween years are tough for kids navigating changing friendships, bodies and hormones. For girls, an added stressor is the uncertainty of when they may have their first period. Periods are often stigmatized and remain a taboo topic, so I encourage parents to have open conversations with their daughters to help break the stigma.

Although the age range for a girl’s first period can vary widely, it’s most common between 12 and 13 years old. Unfortunately, there are often few warning signs, and it may occur when your child is away from home.

Girls need to be prepared and keep a period bag on hand. Period bags are small kits or packs that contain anything you might need for a surprise period when you are on the go. These can be kept in their school bag, their gym bag or their locker at school. These bags should be large enough to hold everything you need but small enough to be discreet.

Each person may prefer different things in their kits, but a basic pack should include:

„ Sanitary pads or tampons

„ Cleansing wipes

„ Hand sanitizer

„ Spare underwear

„ Plastic baggies for soiled clothing

As your child becomes more comfortable with her cycle, other items that may be helpful include period underwear, menstrual cups and overthe-counter pain relievers. For someone with a particularly heavy cycle, having a change of pants can be helpful as well.

This can be a daunting subject to tackle for both you and your tween. Making a period bag together can be a great way to break the ice and start a discussion.

If you want further reading, there are many excellent books that address the topic including:

„ “The Care & Keeping of You” by American Girl

„ “Vaginas and Periods 101” by Christian Hoeger & Kristen Lilla

„ “Celebrate Your Body (and Its Changes, Too!): The Ultimate Puberty Book for Girls” by Sonya Renee Taylor

This is an exciting time in a tween’s life, despite the anxieties that come with it. Having the supplies they need on hand can help alleviate stress and empower them to tackle their periods wherever they pop up!

Protecting Birds of Prey

On July 11, a bald eagle arrived at the World Bird Sanctuary with severe trauma to its beak and left wing –injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Sadly, this eagle is just one of six raptors currently being treated for gunshot injuries at the sanctuary.

According to executive director and CFO Roger Holloway, gun violence is only one of the many challenges facing these vital keepers of the balance in Missouri’s ecosystem. “Being an apex predator, they are essential for the natural control of pest species such as rodents and insects, which cause major damage to food supplies and property annually,” Holloway says. Here, Holloway tells us more about these important predators, how the World Bird Sanctuary is protecting them and how Missourians can help.

WHY ARE BIRDS OF PREY BEING TARGETED BY SHOOTERS?

While six raptors [injured by shooters] is six too many, the number pales in comparison to those injured by collisions with human-made structures. Most shooters target birds of prey out of ignorance or recklessness. I’ve spoken to people who don’t want Cooper’s hawks near their bird feeders, and some have taken shots at them. Others worry about their small pets when they spot a red-tailed hawk in the neighborhood and feel entitled to eliminate what they perceive as a threat. However, it’s important to note that raptors, along with all migratory birds, are protected by federal and state laws. It’s illegal to harm and harass them or disturb their nests.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT PROCESS LOOK LIKE ONCE RAPTORS FIND THEMSELVES AT THE WORLD BIRD SANCTUARY?

If a bird is visibly stressed, we place it in a quiet, dark holding area to help it calm down or warm up if it’s cold. Next, we conduct a full examination to assess its overall health and check for parasites. Based on this, we create a

treatment plan that often includes a nutritious diet, hydration, antibiotics and pain relief. As the bird heals, we gradually move it to outdoor flight chambers to help it regain its strength. Some birds may require physical therapy, with the ultimate goal being their release back into the wild. Recovery times vary – from a few weeks for minor injuries to several months for more serious cases. We once cared for a bird that had lost all its feathers after perching on an active methane flare. In that instance, we treated its burns and waited more than a year for its feathers to regrow before it could be released.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE IN MISSOURI DO TO PROTECT RAPTORS AND AID WORLD BIRD SANCTUARY’S MISSION?

Don’t use rodent poisons. Although some poisons are marketed as non-secondary, rodents carry and eat more poison than they can digest. We see poisoned raptors fairly regularly in our hospital. Recycle and reduce trash. Consume fewer things that use single-use packaging [to reduce] landfill space and [provide] more habitat for wildlife. Volunteer with us at World Bird Sanctuary. There are many ways to connect to our mission and we can’t do it all without volunteer involvement! Donate by joining our Rescuer’s Giving Club at worldbirdsanctuary.org. We receive no government funding to do the work we do, so donations are tremendously helpful!

World Bird Sanctuary, 125 Bald Eagle Ridge Road, Valley Park, Missouri, 616-225-4390, worldbirdsanctuary.org

Did you know?

thirty years ago, the bald eagle, American barn owl and peregrine falcon were endangered species. today, they are back to healthy population levels and nest successfully in missouri, thanks to managed breeding work done by organizations like the World bird Sanctuary.

thirteen species of raptors live in and around the St. Louis area: the red-tailed hawk, broad-winged hawk, sharp-skinned hawk, red-shouldered hawk, Cooper’s hawk, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, American kestrel, mississippi kite, great horned owl, barred owl, barn owl and eastern screech owl.

many peregrine falcons live in downtown St. Louis, making their home atop tall buildings and on the mississippi river bridge. “they survive by eating pigeons as peregrines are bird-eating birds of prey,” Holloway says.

Ready or Not!

It’s likely your little ones are adjusting to a new school environment this year. But the back-to-school transition doesn’t end once the doors open. Many students are still navigating how to feel comfortable in their new physical and social surroundings. To support your child through this process, Ready Readers recommends two titles from the “Learning to Get Along” series by Free Spirit Publishing: “Know and Follow Rules” and “Cool Down and Work Through Anger,” both by author Cheri J. Meiners and illustrator Meredith Johnson.

“Know and Follow Rules” introduces children to key classroom expectations, including the importance of listening, knowing when to speak or stay quiet, and practicing respect and body awareness. Meanwhile, “Cool Down and Work Through Anger” helps children understand that big feelings are normal and offers positive strategies for managing anger. Together, these books equip preschool and kindergarten-aged kids with essential social-emotional skills.

Starting in new situations can often trigger anxiety, and anxious children struggle to focus on learning as their minds work through their emotions. It’s crucial to first ensure that children feel physically and emotionally safe

so they can concentrate on their academic environment. When a child’s social and emotional needs are met, they become more receptive to learning rules and routines.

The pairing of Meiners’ straightforward, engaging text with Johnson’s relatable, childlike illustrations enhances the impact of these books. Children will see themselves, their classmates and their teachers in the illustrations, sparking conversations about their experiences.

As a seasoned educator, Meiners emphasizes the importance of parental involvement in a child’s learning journey. Engaging your child in daily conversations about their routine, comparing school rules to those at home, and creating a lighthearted atmosphere can help build trust. These ongoing discussions foster confidence in their teachers and friends, laying the groundwork for success at school.

Ready Readers shares the joy and power of literacy with preschoolers living in economically suppressed areas across the St. Louis area. Visit readyreaders.org to learn how you can join their efforts to create lasting change for our community’s neediest children.

Book it!

The Missouri Book Festival returns this September for two days of programming. This fest promises to be one for the books, featuring interactive events to keep visitors engaged.

“When I hear about book festivals, I mostly think of author panels,” Reedy Press author Amanda Doyle says. “Those are awesome, but that is not what the festival is. The tagline is ‘Where stories come to life.’ It’s really a bunch of experiences – all related to some published book you can get into – but it’s like an activity-based festival for all sorts of interests.”

Held in Washington, Missouri, from Sept. 13 to 14, the Missouri Book Festival is a weekend celebration of literacy and the joy of reading. Free and family-friendly, this event features a packed schedule, including author talks, comic book creation challenges, poetry slams, character meet-and-greets, cooking demonstrations and more. Located just 50 miles west of downtown St. Louis, Washington offers the perfect day trip for those in the metro area. While some programming takes place at venues

like the Washington Library and City Chambers, the streets of Washington will also be buzzing with food trucks, vendors, community booths and art installations.

“We’ll have lots of different booths, including author booths, but we’re [also] going to have a ballet performance, a circus performance and professional wrestling,” Doyle says. “There’s usually something related to animals for kids, too.”

Families can expect plenty of kid-friendly activities, including children’s book readings, ballet performances and circus shows. Doyle’s own children’s book, “Missouri Weird and Wonderful,” will be featured in an illustration demonstration alongside the book’s illustrator, Dan Zettwoch.

“Give [this festival] a shot, because the chances you can find something to do are really high,” Doyle says. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Soothing Sanctuary

This once outdated master bathroom, equipped with carpet and old oak cabinetry, is now a stunning, soothing sanctuary thanks to Youtopia Designs.

“The inviting atmosphere upon entering the room evokes a sense of relaxation and tranquility, making it a perfect retreat,” says Candice Wideman, owner and principal designer at Youtopia Designs. “The design aesthetic creates a unique and stylish space.”

According to Wideman, one of the most significant transformations of this space was opening up a pre-existing wall between the shower and the tub.

“This simple change not only visually enlarged the space, but also allowed natural light to flow more freely throughout the room,” Wideman says. “By expanding the shower and adding a glass wall and door, the shower became a focal point that enhanced the overall look of the room.”

The Youtopia team selected a delightful

decorative tile not only for the shower but also for behind the bathtub.

“This created a cohesive and harmonious design scheme, inspiring the color palette for the entire space,” Wideman says. “The cabinetry, picking up on the accent color found in the tile, further tied the room together.”

Neutral elements – such as the wood-like tile flooring and marble-patterned quartz countertops – help create the alluring spa-like ambiance.

“The ability to integrate color, pattern and texture into the space was instrumental in achieving the beautiful final result,” Wideman says. “It’s always a pleasure when clients are receptive to incorporating vibrant colors and allowing designers to explore creative ideas beyond conventional boundaries.”

Ichiro Ramen

Despite its name, Ichiro Ramen offers much more than just ramen. The menu includes a wide variety of pan-Asian options including everything from Korean fried chicken and hibachi entrées to fried rice and poke bowls.

The full-service and carryout concept debuted in May, owned by Amy Ye. The native of Fujing – a province on the southeastern coast of China – has more than twenty years of experience in the restaurant industry. According to her son, Ray Sun, who lends a hand as a manager, she previously owned restaurants in the St. Charles and O’Fallon areas including China House Buffet, Hibachi Grill and Yummy House.

Ichiro Ramen is Ye’s latest endeavor, and its extensive menu offers a range of flavors for South County residents. “We wanted to explore ramen and eventually had a few ideas we wanted to add that made the menu quite diverse,” Sun says.

Ichiro Ramen occupies a cozy 2,400-square-foot space that seats 70 guests. The interior design combines wood-paneled walls with playful Asian-inspired décor. One wall boasts a vibrant display of 15 colorful fans, while another showcases whimsical prints of cartoon cats dressed as samurai. The casual atmosphere is enhanced by LED lights, paper lanterns, and a couple of TV screens, while comfortable upholstered booths invite diners to relax as they enjoy a bowl of piping hot noodles.

Among the most popular menu items is the Super Ichiro Ramen, a hearty dish brimming with pork and chicken chashu, bamboo shoots, seasoned egg, green onion, fish cake, spinach and black garlic oil. For first-time visitors, Sun recommends the lighter tonkotsu ramen or the Ichiro chicken ramen, both featuring tender chashu, seasoned egg, bamboo shoots, sweet corn, green onion and nori. “It’s lighter for beginners,” he says.

Appetizer options include gyoza, takoyaki and the same crab rangoon recipe Ye has made over the years at each of her eateries – a sweet-savory treat that Sun says always drew returning customers. The plethora of additional main course options includes donburi (rice bowls), lo mein, udon, hibachi entrées, teriyaki entrées and more.

“We’re filling a niche here in Oakville,” Sun says. “I didn’t know how people would receive us. So far, the customers have been loving it. We’re glad we’re able to join the community on a good note.” A second location of Ichiro Ramen is tentatively set to open in St. Peters in the near future.

Ichiro Ramen is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Rep Revived

It’s been a challenging year for The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, but this longstanding pillar of the metro’s theater scene is emerging stronger than ever. With September marking the unofficial start of the local theater season, The Rep is ready to unveil its highly anticipated new lineup, featuring both its Mainstage and Studio series.

Last fall, The Rep faced a severe financial crunch. The company launched what turned out to be a successful $2.5 million “Rally for The Rep” campaign; trimmed its traditional Mainstage season from six productions down to four; and canceled productions at other venues, including for its Steve Woolf Studio series.

In spring 2023, The Rep experienced another major shift with the departure of Hana Sharif, its Augustin Family Artistic Director. A national search for her successor culminated in April 2024 with the appointment of Kate Bergstrom. Since joining, Bergstrom, along with Managing Director Danny Williams, has been focused on reengaging the theater’s community. Their efforts are paying off – by late August, Williams reported a 25% increase in subscribers, including more than 1,000 new and returning patrons.

In March 2024 The Rep announced its 202425 season would consist of just four Mainstage productions, but that its Studio series also would return with a pair of presentations. Its Mainstage season begins Sept. 18 with “Dial M for Murder,” the Frederick Knott thriller that was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1954, starring Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings. It will be followed in December by “Million Dollar Quartet Christmas,” a collaborative effort between The Rep and Stages St. Louis, following Stages’ hit

production of “Million Dollar Quartet” last year.

Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s Tonynominated play, “Clyde’s,” will be next on the Mainstage, running Feb. 5 through March 2. It tells the tale of a group of ex-convicts who pool their culinary talents in a run-down sandwich joint to meet the challenge of a “mystic” chef. The season will conclude with Ken Ludwig’s “Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood,” from March 19 through April 13, a humorous take on the famous English chap who “robbed from the rich to give to the poor” in medieval England.

The Rep calls its Steve Woolf Studio Series “Adventurous Theatre for Adventurous Theatregoers.” This series’ 2024-2025 season will kick off with Jen Silverman’s dark comedy, “The Roommate,” from Oct. 26 through Nov. 17 in the Emerson Studio Theatre in the Loretto-Hilton Center on the campus of Webster University. It’s the story of a recently divorced Midwestern

woman who takes in a mysterious woman with a shady past.

From Jan. 15 through Feb. 8 The Rep will present “Athena” by Gracie Gardner in the Emerson Studio Theatre, in which a pair of 17-yearold girls learn about each other while training for the Junior Olympics fencing team. “Athena” will mark Bergstrom’s directorial debut at The Rep. “We have the grand opportunity ahead to celebrate the power of extraordinary togetherness in this beloved region during a divisive time,” Bergstrom says. “By bridging the differences that make us unique and the undergirding humanity that unites us all, The Rep looks to spark joy, discovery, and that extraordinary togetherness towards a thriving St. Louis and beyond.”

Purses for Pooches

This summer, the Humane Society of Missouri hosted its 18th annual Purses for Pooches event. Guests enjoyed light bites and signature cocktails made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka – a known supporter of rescue animals – as they browsed a selection of designer purses from brands like Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and more, hoping to win a luxury item to take home. The event raised funds to support the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, which is committed to rescuing animals from abuse, neglect and natural disasters. Committee co-chairs for the event were Leigh Perica and Sara Newton.

Flynn: Community 5K races can be a great goal for newer runners or former runners looking to reconnect with the sport. Planning ahead and allocating two to three months to train will provide for a more enjoyable experience on event day.

Consistency is key! Progressively build up the duration and frequency of your running and walking over time. Sometimes walking is stigmatized, but interspersing walk breaks into your running training is a great way to build endurance.

H o w can runner s set re asonable g oals t o incre ase their distance in time for their cho sen e vent?

Flynn: Resist the urge to do too much too soon. Following a training plan will help set you up for success and avoid overuse injuries that can come from training too aggressively

Remember to have fun! If it's your first time running a certain distance, whether that be a mile, a 5K or a marathon, I encourage you to set your primary goal as finishing the race and completing the distance. Celebrate your small gains!

Spewak: I like to encourage my athletes to set three different types of goals: one they can reach just by consistently sticking with their training plan, one they can achieve with ideal race-day conditions, and one they might not accomplish in this training cycle but can keep working toward in the future.

As far as properly increasing distance, my recommendation is to increase your training mileage every three weeks by roughly 10%.

H o w would y ou addres s common challeng es runner s might face, such as sorenes s or lo sing motiv ation?

not only be successful but [also] healthy Seeking out a running coach locally or online is a great place to start.

Flynn: Minor aches and pains are fairly common among newer runners. It’s important to differentiate between minor “niggles” and serious injuries. If in doubt, consult a medical professional or coach. Proper footwear can play a major role in mitigating or alleviating common ailments such as shin splints. Visit a local run specialty store like Big River (locations in West County, South City and University City) to get fit for shoes.

When it comes to motivation, remember: Mood follows action! There are many times that I don’t feel like going for a run, but it is extremely rare that I regret going for a run.

An y da y-of tip s for racer s?

Flynn: Lay out your gear the night before; arrive early to relieve stress associated with parking and porta-potty lines; and review the race route, which is often published on the event website, in advance to see the course elevation profile and location of any water stops.

Do a dress rehearsal of the race morning in training, find a pre-race dinner and breakfast that your GI tract agrees with, and make sure to hydrate in the days leading up to your event and on race morning. Focus on sleep in the week leading up to your event. It’s common to be nervous and have trouble sleeping the night before, but if you’ve gotten good sleep earlier in the week, you'll be a-okay.

Spewak: For race morning, the rule of thumb is to have breakfast around two hours before you race Everyone is different, and if you are struggling with fueling and what to eat, please consider speaking with a sports dietitian.

To make race mornings less hectic, plan where you are going to park the day before If the race offers bib pickup prior to race morning, take advantage of that so you can have your bib

“They have all the ingredients for the best shoe,” he says. “Brooks has come through with the widths and construction for runners, walkers, cross-trainers [and more].”

Consistency is key! Progressively build up the duration and fequency of your running and walking over time.
