BETHANY CHRISTO Because my mother is 600 miles away … , a box of colorful macarons is making its way to her doorstep along with a heartfelt note to let her know I’m thinking of her and grateful for her, no matter the distance.

DANIEL PUMA This Mother’s Day, my wife and I will be traveling to Oklahoma. We will cook a spread of delicious foods for my mother and grandmother while probably watching awesomely bad movies.

EDITOR ‌READING THROUGH THIS WEEK’S ISSUE, I FELT A WAVE OF JOY wash over me. The people profiled in the following pages are truly inspiring – and making true, positive impacts in the world. In his feature story in The Daily, “Some Say the World Will End in Fire,” copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach shares the story of Town and Country native John O’Leary. When O’Leary was 9 years old, he was given a 1 percent chance of survival after sustaining burns on nearly 100 percent of his body. Today, O’Leary is an inspirational speaker and the author of On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. Hollerbach’s poignant profile of O’Leary’s life and work not only brought tears to my eyes, but also opened them – an experience we hope you have as well. Turn to p. 66 to learn how O’Leary turned a tragic story into one of strength and triumph. In this week’s Abode section, LN contributor Connie Mitchell also shares the story of C&M Interiors, a new interior design studio in St. Louis (p. 38). Channing Glover and Maria Lesko, the creative minds behind C&M Interiors, created their studio simply out of a shared passion for design. Their story is likely to inspire you, as well, whether through refreshed interior design for your home or even fulfilling a lifelong dream. All the best,

lcoholism had been a problem in Martin’s family for generations, but nobody ever talked about it or acknowledged it. When Martin discovered it was an addiction he, too, suffered from, he knew he had to admit it and get help. He turned to Northbound Treatment Services in Kirkwood. “Northbound opened my eyes to something that’s been right in front of me my whole life,” he says. Northbound is a program that’s based on the Alcoholics Anonymous model, with locations in Kirkwood and an in-patient facility in Newport Beach, California. The Kirkwoodbased program, led by program director Tib Albach, typically includes 12 weeks of intensive treatment, followed by an aftercare program that extends a full year. “We’re the only national program in St. Louis that has a full continuum of care,” Albach says. “We suggest the way people recover is through an abstinence-based 12-step recovery program.” Northbound treats adult men and women who are in need of treatment

for alcoholism, addiction to other mood-altering chemicals and dual diagnoses. Northbound’s St. Louis services include clinical evaluations, assisting families and friends in the arrangement of interventions, providing information and referral services related to diseases of addiction, making referrals to residential treatment, providing on-site family support and aftercare services, and providing on-site intensive outpatient services in a recovery-workshop format. Because of this full continuum of care, Northbound is extremely committed to family. Albach says the majority of the people in Northbound’s program were brought in by loved ones who wanted to see them get better. “If you take care of yourself, you’re going to feel better and create a better relationship with the person who brought you through the door,” he says. “We have such an emphasis on family here.” Mary, the wife of an alcoholic, remembers how close she and her husband were to divorce. “With alcohol, a lot of people don’t realize they or their loved one has

Northbound, that’s the first big step toward recovery. “From there, it’s just amazing,” she says. “If you can get [your loved one] to sit down and talk about their addiction, it’s a huge step for both them and their family. Walking through that door will change your life for the better.” To learn more about Northbound Treatment Services, visit livingsober. com or call 314.678.1130.

a disease,” she says. “We all know people who overdrink regularly. They have a job, and they’re not beating you. You can’t talk to anyone about it because your friends are probably doing it, too.” There was no doubt in Mary’s mind that she and her spouse were going to have an awful divorce. Even though he came home from work every day and was a good dad, he “wasn’t actually present,” she recalls. When they went to Northbound, Mary was included in the meetings and the process of her husband’s recovery. “To have hope again was just a miracle,” she says. Martin had help through his recovery, too, and says his wife was very much involved in his journey at Northbound. “We were in this together,” he says. “She had to do her part, too. One of the best things about Northbound is that you’re not in it alone. Now, our marriage is better than it’s ever been.” Albach says that most of Northbound’s clients have been brought in by loved ones when something was on the line – be it a job, a marriage, legal trouble or other circumstances. This can help Northbound’s staff appropriately assess where the prospective client is with his or her addiction. “We pride ourselves on treating people with the right level of care,” he says. They start with a 90-minute clinical evaluation and, from there, work to prepare the clients for the rest of their lives. “We’re not here to reinvent the wheel,” Albach says. “The 12-step program we follow here at Northbound is prep school for the rest of their life.” Mary says that if you can get your loved one in the door at

elly’s Black and White Ball – the annual black-tie celebration, as well as St. Louis’ premier celebrity gala – took place on April 10 at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. Joining the Grammy Award-winning rapper, actor and entrepreneur at the gala were diverse friends from the entertainment, sports and business communities. Among others that evening, Grammy-winning hip-hop artist/ producer T-Pain performed. Also, Nelly recognized Orlando Pace, the legendary St. Louis Rams offensive tackle, who was recently inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. The event otherwise celebrated the achievements of Make-A-Wish Missouri, which grants the wishes of St. Louis children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy; the gala raised funds for that organization, continuing the Black and White Ball’s legacy of supporting locally focused charities. Presenting the 2016 Black and White Ball were Plaza Jaguar St. Louis and Aetna, with additional support from Rockwood Asset Management, Mercy, Derrty Ent, Gentleman Jack and SYNERGY Productions LLC.

ixteen teen leaders from the Wyman Center had the opportunity to dine with notable St. Louis community members at the Four Seasons Ballroom recently. Teens attending the event included those from Wyman’s Teen Leadership Program and Teen Outreach Program, as well as inspireSTL. Two teens attending the gala, Quentin Phillips and Jaques Clinton, opened the event by speaking about the limited support systems they had while growing up, which presented challenges to their success. These two best friends shared how their interactions with Wyman helped them develop a sense of self, connections to the world around them and the academic and leadership prowess to become thriving young leaders.

Kids today need opportunity, and Wyman supports those needs of positive opportunity to grow to their fullest potential. DAVID FREY, CHAIRMAN

The St. Louis County NAACP seeks social and justice reform for the betterment of society and individual lives. The biggest difference is made when you take up the fight. After Ferguson’s one-year anniversary, St. Louis still faces many challenges. “The report by the Department of Justice [shows] literally hundreds of children who couldn’t be represented in St. Louis County family court because the resources weren’t there,” NAACP national board member John Gaskin III says. “[We launched a program on the campus of] St. Louis Community College to provide pro bono assistance to children within the court. Instead of wringing our hands, we found a solution.” Become part of the solution by visiting naacpstlcounty.org or calling 314-330-7410.

he mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) continues to be as relevant today as when it was first founded in 1909. The St. Louis County NAACP continues to seek equality in all aspects of life through awareness and initiatives designed to make change for the betterment of society. “In this country, there’s no secret that there has been a lot of conversations about how ‘black lives matter’ and how life relates to interaction and trust in the black community with law enforcement,” John Gaskin III, NAACP national board member, says. “Remember, as we go to the polls, that, yes, our lives matter – but also, our votes count. When you participate, it can make a difference both locally and nationally.” Marking the 80th annual Freedom Fund Leadership Dinner with this call to action, “Our Lives Matter, Our Votes Count,” the St. Louis County NAACP will honor those who take these words to heart. Q&A

CHANNING GLOVER AND MARIA LESKO OF C&M INTERIORS By Connie Mitchell Channing Glover and Maria Lesko describe themselves as two women who befriended each other while persevering through design school. They bonded over a shared love of classic white peonies and billowy drapes. Eventually, after “dozens of pots of coffee,” they launched C&M Interiors in St. Louis. Ladue News recently caught up with the duo to learn more about their work and design aesthetic. When and how did C&M start, and what inspired its creation? C&M: We befriended each other in design school and worked together under a local residential designer, where we discovered our mutual love for beautiful spaces and functional design. Thoughts were tossed around for years about starting our own business, and we finally took a leap of faith at the beginning of this year and purchased our limited liability company. Our two unique design styles have always been in sync with each other, and we knew that we could give clients their dream home if we had the chance. Now we have the chance we’ve been dreaming of and are beyond excited to continue this new endeavor. What is your overarching philosophy of design? C&M: Our design skill sets and inviting personalities make it easy for clients to express what they want in their space. Once we understand what our clients are looking for, we help them interpret their wants and needs to develop a cohesive design strategy not only through pleasing aesthetics, but also functional attributes.

38

MAY 6, 2016 | LadueNews.com

Do you have a special expertise in the event or business-design field? C&M: We specialize in residential design. The commercial design portion of our business includes hospitality-design consultation. We tend to work with owners and developers to help further their projects and enhance the overall feel of their space. We are always looking to get our hands into a new project type to help owners develop creative ways to enhance their business through decoration and design. You describe your strengths on your website in different terms: Channing is “modern with a twist,” and Maria is “timeless and classic.” Do you collaborate to bring these together, or does one of you take the lead? C&M: We feel that we produce our best work when both of our hands have touched a project, but there are certainly circumstances where one of us will take the lead. We feel strongly that all of our work is a happy marriage between our design voices and enhances our client’s story. This is what makes us unique and develop successful projects that our clients will love for years. We have successfully come together and created a style that represents both of us on an individual level and as design partners. Your mission mentions a “contemporary take on sophisticated living.” What are some examples or descriptions of that type of design? C&M: Everyone deserves to live a sophisticated life, with fine china, white billowy drapes and fresh peonies. While we can certainly achieve that for our clients, we understand it’s not a completely realistic lifestyle for all families. Our contemporary take on sophisticated living takes into consideration the day-to-day lifestyles of the home’s inhabitants. From the simplest things, like a hook for your dog’s leash, we make sure it’s incorporated into the design of our client’s home so that it doesn’t feel like an afterthought. What’s the most important thing you’d like our readers to know about C&M Interiors? C&M: Our No. 1 goal is to finish projects with incredibly satisfied and beaming clients. We are striving to develop relationships that will last 30 years as our clients’ lives evolve and change. We want to be there every step of the way.

Chesterfield JeWeLeRS

With St. Louis’ largest selection of Herend, the hand-painted Hungarian fine china line first popularized by Queen Victoria, Chesterfield Jewelers is a top-notch destination for formal dinnerware. Herend patterns are never retired, so any Herend item can be ordered at any time, but its newer lines – the silk ribbon pattern and Fish Scale pattern, available in several bright colors – are what’s making waves in the world of fine china selection. It’s not your grandmother’s china, product specialist Julie Beck tells us, but it certainly can be paired with your grandmother’s venerable, timeless Herend pieces to create a look that gorgeously blends without being uniformly matched.

Herend’s dreamy silk ribbon charger in cornflower blue has huge appeal paired with the timeless Princess Victoria-patterned dinner plate. Step out of the box, and discover a huge trend making its way back into fine-dining settings – yellow-gold flatware. “It’s very popular,” Beck says. “We carry the Reed & Barton gold flatware.” Quality linens with an appropriately airy feel, a well-crafted floral arrangement and framed place cards bearing either the guest’s name or photo add that special touch. TUTTLe’S

Layers, texture and variety are key for this year’s spring and summer tableware, and Mary Tuttle’s has a wide range of colors, designs and prices to piece together a tablescape perfect for your spring soirée. “There’s no need to break the budget with a grand purchase of new tableware,” says Angela Carter, manager at Mary Tuttle’s. “Using your existing tableware together with some fun and fresh new pieces will do the trick every time!” Carter suggests adding in colorful chargers, vivid table runners and, of course, floral arrangements (a specialty at Mary Tuttle’s) as a few easy ways to ignite an explosion of color.

“Buying a few statement pieces for the table can change a conservative table to a pure ‘wow,’” Carter adds. For Mary Tuttle’s featured tablescapes, she used Match pewter to bring in a subtle element of sophistication. She also recommends Juliska plates to bring color and whimsy to any table. The entire Juliska collection is ultradurable – dishwasher-, freezer- and microwave-safe – making the collection’s pieces a great choice for both everyday use and special occasions. Telltale spring signs of bursting floral bouquets and bright colors are charmingly evident in Sallie Kramer’s spring table settings at her eponymous Ladue boutique, Sallie Home. A pink-themed setting pairs a pink and gold-rimmed Anna Weatherly charger with the Summerlea dinner plate by Julie Wear, the internationally acclaimed artist who hand-painted the Royal Stud collection for Queen Elizabeth. This setting is topped with Sash Nicholas monogramed porcelain by St. Louisborn Cynthia Nouri. “Her weave 24-karat gold is truly oh-so-special,” Kramer says. The Le Jacquard Français Jardin D’Hiver

collection has a heavenly appeal, as its name suggests, setting the backdrop to Gien’s Azur collection, paired with the Filet Bleu dinner plate and Pont Aux Choux charger in white. “The Sabre butter spreader in lapis blue complements the cornflowers in the Azur pattern, punctuating the setting with an exclamation point,” Kramer says. Ricci’s Bamboo Flatware handles are also evocative of an outdoor setting. Sallie Home, 9821 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-567-7883, salliehome.com

Detoxing With Dior

‌Y

ou’re bombarded with toxins in every aspect of life – in the clothes you wear, the medications you take, the food you eat, even the air you breathe. Luckily, you can improve your life by detoxing. You may wonder, though, isn’t that what livers are for? Livers, unfortunately, can filter only so much. Every day, you face so many toxins they get stored in your body’s cells – 7 billion daily, to be exact. That’s why detoxing has become such a hot topic. Fortunately, Dior has simplified detoxing with One Essential (Dillard’s, Neiman Marcus, $100 to $158). The company created a serum-like skin treatment that supposedly removes 100 percent of identified toxins. It contains red hibiscus, which can recharge the mitochondria – the powerhouse of cells. That produces an anti-fatigue effect in the skin, which, by removing toxins, improves cell performance. For anti-aging skin care users, benefits should increase up to fourfold. One Essential’s simple to use, too. Cleanse,

tone and use your detox serum; then proceed with your normal skin care routine. Made for both day and night use, the Dior offering enhances any products, including prescription ones. Sometime this month, the Chesterfield, Saint Louis Galleria and St. Clair Square Dillard’s also are scheduled to receive another new Dior product – the spray-on Detox Toner – that promises to detox the surface of the skin before skin care application. Although you might think regular cleansing and toning do that, cleansing removes dirt, oil and makeup, but not many environmental toxins. Reportedly, this new Dior product effectively removes everything a normal toner does, as well as all environmental toxins that have attached themselves to your skin throughout the day or night. The toxins’ removal prevents them from being pushed into your skin when you apply other products. It also allows your expensive serums to penetrate deeper, boosting their effects.

The C Suite Business Notes Succeed by Understanding Core Values By Charlotte VM Ottley “‌ To find your core values, look at your expectations of others. Your core values will come shining through. Listen to your don’ts and do’s; they will tell you who you are!” – An Ottley-ism Core values combine inherent beliefs and learned behaviors. They reinforce and reflect character, integrity and decorum in life, and ground our choices about how we treat others and how we want to be treated. They also potentially function to establish why we are others’ best resource in various situations. Once, core values were assumed. “Watch your tone of voice! Don’t talk back to an adult!” How many times, growing up, did you hear such directives? Some families call the behavior prompting such directives “expressing yourself” – but in an office, such behavior often is called “insubordination.” As children, we learned many core values from relatives and mentors, many of them neither as educated nor as prosperous as we are now. Their wise values, though, gave us sustainable wisdom that helped

us formulate our own values. Interestingly, the further time removes us from those who taught us such values, the more appreciative we often become. The older we get, we perhaps hear ourselves making statements like “My father always said … ” or “My mother never allowed us to … ” Though diffident or resistant at the time, we may find ourselves today revisiting valueinspiring advice worthy of passing to others. Like us earlier in life, today’s young people have their own core values, whether spoken or expressed otherwise, particularly in different cultures; however, good values can find their way into all areas of a person’s life regardless of age, lifestyle or gender. Ask yourself if your core values remain relevant. How do those values help others, for instance? Regarding core values, consider these steps: Risk embracing another person’s bad experiences until he or she trusts you enough to try a different way. Helping others establish their core values helps you strengthen your own. Recognize that not all core values are good,

especially when we don’t understand certain cultural or survival behaviors that are considered means to an end. Assess your own core values with a simple exercise. Make a list of your core values, ask family and friends for three examples of your core values and then ask co-workers the same question. Compare the three lists, and find similar statements from each group. Assessing your core values can be enlightening but can have consequences. If you find your assessment disagreeable, modify your values. After the selfassessment, either adjust your values accordingly or be at peace with yourself – and share those values. You have to be right for yourself before you can be right for anyone else.

Reading Really Is Fundamental

By Dr. Joseph Kahn

I

recently had an eye-opening experience in regard to how many children are addicted to digital tablets for games, streaming videos and entertainment. They view reading as a chore, not as an entertainment alternative. So why don’t kids like to read? Many say that reading is boring, no fun, too hard – or that they’re too busy. Nevertheless, mysteriously, they have time to watch YouTube almost without cease. Learning to read can be a challenge for some, and books can be scary. Also, schools may emphasize performance more than the pursuit of reading for leisure. In that light, how can we encourage our children and grandchildren to read? Tactics from Reading Is Fundamental (rif.org), whose website selfdescribes as “the nation’s largest literacy nonprofit organization,” include:  Let them see you read because children learn by mimicking parental behavior. Read newspapers and magazines (like Ladue News). Let them see that tablets and TVs aren’t the only source of entertainment and information (though if you do read

books or news on your devices, make sure they know that’s what you’re doing).  Talk about what you read. This will demonstrate to your children that reading has value.  Read out loud to your children. Bedtime stories have significance, as does reading out loud together at any time. Start reading to your children in their infancy and continue through the early school years. Some children don’t embrace reading because it’s often mandated at school, and they’re told what to read. Kids like control over their lives as much as we do. So let your children choose what to read, but set the expectation that they must choose something. Take a field trip, and go book “shopping” at the library. Keep books around, in sight, and readily available at home, in the car, on vacation and wherever you are. Love of reading is one of the greatest and easiest gifts you can give a child. You will be proud when you are mentioned in his or her autobiography! As a 9-year-old, John O’Leary suffered an almost unthinkable trauma – and then transformed it into a tribute to the human spirit.

W

hen the 5-gallon gas can exploded, John O’Leary recounts in his new inspirational memoir, it “blasted [him] against the far side of the garage, blew out windows in the garage and rattled neighbors’ houses blocks away.” As he writes in On Fire, the book in question, that explosion on Jan. 17, 1987, left O’Leary, then just 9 years old, effectively burned on his entire body, with 87 percent of his injuries third-degree burns, so-called “full-thickness burns” affecting all dermal layers. “The fire was a death sentence,” he observes in the book, a harrowing but uplifting 272-page narrative published in March by Simon & Schuster. Yet as On Fire establishes and O’Leary recently emphasized one cold, wet afternoon over lunch, the explosion ultimately left him not dead or “just” disfigured, but rather transfigured – annealed like steel, all the stronger for his suffering. And suffer he did. On Fire relates that O’Leary’s petrochemical calamity – inspired by the shenanigans of older neighborhood chums, he brought a small flame too near humanity’s favorite accelerant in his family’s Town and Country home – prompted a five-month hospital stay, torturous physical therapy to help his skin and joints regain their flexibility, and “a couple of dozen surgeries,” among them the amputation of all his fingers. For eight months following the explosion, moreover, bandages swaddled him like some pint-size version of Boris Karloff’s title character from Universal Studios’ classic 1932 The Mummy. Yet their eventual removal, in O’Leary’s own assessment, had little affective effect. “I remained bound with self-imposed bandages,” he states in On Fire. “Not just for that first summer. But for the two decades that followed.” With indomitable succor from his parents and five siblings, though, O’Leary recovered, graduated from De Smet Jesuit High School and then Saint Louis University, and even thrived, to follow what On Fire dubs a “radically inspired life,” requiring him to “embrace the lessons from [the] past, actively engage in the miracle of each moment and ignite the limitless possibility of tomorrow.” That ignition led him to become a hugely popular inspirational speaker, nowadays addressing “more than 50,000 people at more than 120 events” each year, according to On Fire. O’Leary’s full-time hortatory career began almost nine years ago with an unpaid, after-school, 15-minute talk before a quartet of third-grade Girl Scouts. A dunker? Not quite. On that Wednesday, stomach butterflies as big as 747s made O’Leary, a man who’d overcome so very much else, sick in the parking lot. “The first two or three years were brutal – very slow, very gradual,” he recollects of the new full-time career, which has included marquee clients like Claytonheadquartered Enterprise Rent-A-Car and which followed stints as a real estate developer and a part-time hospital chaplain. “And years four through six weren’t much better. “But we just kept trying to get a little bit better today than we were yesterday and improve even tomorrow. And with that continual improvement, I don’t have a whole lot of angst before speaking, other than trying to do the best job possible, whether that’s four Girl Scouts or 20,000 insurance brokers.” Still, some speaking engagements, O’Leary admits during our conversation, have prompted unique anxiety, especially a visit to the infamous federal correctional facility in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He admits to being initially terrified of the 130 or so inmates he addressed that day – particularly when the power failed, the door automatically slammed in the room where he was speaking, and a lockdown ensued. Nonetheless, by the illumination of a single emergency spotlight and at the prompting of one of the inmates, O’Leary continued his presentation, and once the power returned and guards directed the inmates to their cells, they all queued to hug him. Scarcely incidentally, during the ongoing pilgrimage of his life, O’Leary wooed, wowed and wed a lady named Beth and with her welcomed into the world four children, the eldest named Jack – in honor of the late, great Jack Buck, longtime

St. Louis Cardinals announcer. In a series of passages, On Fire relates Buck’s unstinting devotion to helping a 9-year-old stranger. As the pain-wracked lad lay immobilized in his hospital bed soon after the calamity, temporarily muted by a tracheal ventilator and blinded by the explosion, he heard footsteps, the scrape of a chair being moved across the floor, a cough and an amiable rumble familiar to any local baseball fan: “Kid. Wake up.” After a brief initial visit, as O’Leary later learned, Buck “left the room, ripped off [his] scrubs and broke down weeping in the hallway.” Characteristically, though, the voice of the Redbirds for almost half a century never faltered in prodding O’Leary to recuperate, ultimately gifting him with the crystal baseball Buck received in his 1987 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, to commemorate his younger friend’s college graduation. That said, On Fire highlights not just Buck’s humanity in response to O’Leary’s plight but that of many, many others – family, hospital staff, friends, acquaintances, even total strangers. “These aren’t extraordinary actions,” O’Leary reinforces in conversation. “It’s easy to shine a light on Jack Buck, but I hope it’s loud and clear throughout the book that, yes, Jack deserves that bright light, but so do all these other individuals.” The inclusiveness of that comment dovetails with O’Leary’s philosophy about both On Fire and superficially similar books. “I don’t like preachy tones, and I don’t like tones that seem overly braggish, and I don’t like tones that seem overly instructive,” he says. “I hope [On Fire] begins as a gentle rebuke and turns into a swift kick in the heinie.… I’m trying to meet people where they are [existentially] but then inspire them, and if this kid can go through all this, and if we can witness all the struggles that he has witnessed in his travails in the world, and all the men and women who do not make excuses who have bumped into him in his life, what excuses should we be making in our own? It’s time to own our lives.” O’Leary pauses to reflect on whether the 1987 explosion deserves the five-anddime characterization as a “tragedy” so beloved by many TV newscasters. “I think our answers to questions change in time,” he replies at last, diplomatically, citing in précis his personal history since the accident. “Mom and Dad are going to lose a child, and my five siblings are going to lose their brother. That’s tragic. As I’m recovering in a wheelchair, missing my fingers, missing my skin – that’s tragic. The beauty of life is, the story’s not over yet. So now, we have 30 years of tailwind to realize, ‘Wow, it was not a tragedy at all – it’s an incredible gift.’ Traumatic? Absolutely. But also triumphant and redemptive and the kind of story that I would not trade with anybody else in the world. So I think that, yes, it was tragic, but it didn’t stay there for long.” Over lunch, O’Leary also mentions the telling reaction to On Fire of an agent of his, a self-described atheist in New York. “I got to the end of the book,” he quotes her as saying, “and I realized for the first time, miracles do happen – I’ve just not been open to seeing them.” Whether in an innocent campfire or a conflagration, flame, in short, involves not just heat but light. “Some say the world will end in fire,” quadruple Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Frost mused in “Fire and Ice,” first published nearly a century ago. Both on the page and in person, O’Leary strongly suggests that that’s where his own world effectively began. ON THE PATIO: Feature Story

Outdoor Deli h Delight Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria

K

atie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria in Rock Hill got a brilliant facelift, just in time for the sunny days of St. Louis spring and summer. The eatery, co-owned by Katie Lee Collier and her husband Ted Collier, is constantly improving to bring the latest and freshest artisan Italian tastes to its customers. In an effort to improve the customer dining experience, the Colliers have installed a large patio sail that helps keep the restaurant’s patio area shady and cool. The patio experience will now be more suitable for those warmer St. Louis summer days, enabling customers to still enjoy the outdoor experience in the shade. The Colliers also have implemented more comfortable tables outdoors. In addition, they planted a large garden a few weeks ago, which helps supplement the restaurant’s kitchen during the summer months. “We have citrus trees, fig trees, lots of herbs, tomatoes, peppers, peas and more – all the things we use in our kitchen,” Katie says. Visitors to Katie’s have enjoyed live music on Wednesday and Thursday nights in the past, but the Collier team is working to bring in musicians for

00

weekend nights, too. The Colliers plan to have live music Wednesday through Saturday. With the plans for the warmer months, Katie says the restaurant has revamped a few of its seasonal menus to bring new options to customers. The new cocktail menu will feature a number of fresh-pressed options, incorporating herbs and vegetables from the garden. Customers can enjoy them as a single glass or in a pitcher with a few friends. “We want people to be able to sit out on the patio and enjoy,” she says. The brunch menu also has been redone for the first time in a year, and the Colliers are excited to bring something that’s not your traditional brunch menu to the customer base. “We have a bunch of new toasts,” Katie says. “There’s one with fried egg and salsa verde, one with banana and Nutella, and many more. It’s a really fresh, modern brunch menu.” To amp up excitement for Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria fans around the clock, Katie and her team have filmed a web series that recently premiered on the restaurant’s YouTube channel. “We’re doing the how-to videos with recipes and

incorporating a local St. Louis personality who comes on and cooks with me,” she says. “We eat what we’ve made and talk about their business.” Episodes so far have included Eric Christensen from Stl Up Late, David Choi from Seoul Taco and Frank McGinty from Kaldi’s Coffee. Katie says so far, feedback on the “From Scratch With Katie” series has been great, with lots of viewers and customer enthusiasm behind the idea. “We’ll see what we can improve and keep making them,” she says. 314-942-6555, katiespizzaandpasta.com 9568 Manchester Road, Rock Hill

His latest novel, Valiant Ambition, is an account of the middle years of the American Revolution and the tragic relationship between George Washington and Benedict Arnold. The focus of Valiant Ambition is on loyalty and personal integrity, evoking a Shakespearean tragedy that unfolds in the key relationship of George Washington and Benedict Arnold. ‘Great Rivers Biennial’ highlights the multimedia voices of three St. Louis artists.

S

t. Louisans can step into three different views of Midwestern life with the new “Great Rivers Biennial” 2016 exhibition, on display today through August 14 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM). Since 2003, the “Great Rivers Biennial” has highlighted three talented emerging or midcareer artists working in the greater St. Louis area. This year’s seventh edition will showcase the multimedia works of St. Louisbased artists Lyndon Barrois Jr., Nanette Boileau and Tate Foley. Three distinguished jurors – Anne Ellegood, senior curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; Valerie Cassel Oliver, senior curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; and Paul Pfeiffer, a New Yorkbased sculptor, photographer and video artist – selected the winners from more than 80 submissions.

For the first time, the jurors chose the artists after visits to their local studios, notes Jeffrey Uslip, CAM’s chief curator and deputy director for exhibitions and programs. “These are three artists who have distinct visual vocabularies, refined and unique points of view, and all felt not only relevant and contemporary, but [also] deeply tied to this region,” Uslip says of the reasons for their selection. “They became three voices who emblemized what it’s like to live and work in St. Louis. We’re proud of not only the level of diversity, but also the range [of] artistic practice.” Each artist received $20,000 from the show sponsor, Gateway Foundation, to bring his or her art to life over the course of a year. After three weeks of installing work, a range of media – from installation, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture to digital art –

‘Great rivers Biennial’ 2016 exhiBition What: A multimedia exhibition of works by is on display in CAM’s three main galleries. Among the featured artists, Barrois received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. He created the multidisciplinary work Of Color to examine the shifting notions of race, identity and masculinity in pop culture, sports and fashion. The life-size piece features eight sculptures – composed of cropped images of athletes, fashion models and domestic objects taken from magazines – on an asphalt basketball court, on which attendees can walk. “These [sculptures] are surrogates for cultural ideas,” Uslip explains. “You get the sense that they are players on the court in this game of life that we have to engage with and navigate.” The sculptures are divided into two teams – represented through color versus black-and-white – and open up a space for dialogue, Uslip adds. On view in another main gallery is the work of Boileau, who received her MFA from the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. She transports viewers to the Dakota Territory, a three-channel video installation that looks at the daily life of ranchers in southeastern Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Boileau spent several months filming the Western landscape footage, which includes cattle being herded, calves

being born and bison being sold at auction. The documentary-style film aims to demystify the lives of “cowboys” in the “Wild West” and allow viewers to understand the agricultural life that is so important in the region, Uslip says. The exhibition’s third featured artist, Foley, received his own MFA from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. For the biennial, he created Post No Bills, an installation of large-scale sculptures and 12 single-channel videos exploring the language of protest through words such as systematic, nationhood and volatile. “We’re meant to think about the words’ use, reuse and misuse, and understand how language creates social change – but also can create marginalization,” Uslip explains. Uslip says this year’s compelling edition of the “Great Rivers Biennial” will allow visitors to understand – and question – the issues and realities facing those living in the St. Louis area. “It’s important because it starts a dialogue,” he says. “It puts a mirror to ourselves and our society and allows us to think, see and understand the social context in which we live.”

T

he Central West End offers much more than the hustle and bustle of Euclid Avenue. Tucked away on tree-lined thoroughfares throughout this historic neighborhood are plenty of fine establishments – Nathalie’s, for instance. Housed in a stately manse that at various times served as a private residence, a funeral parlor and even a magic theater, this eatery combines elegant surroundings with quality, locally sourced fare. A classic place, it pairs nicely with a production of a classic play like The Glass Menagerie, now running at Upstream Theater. The farm-to-table label isn’t just a marketing ploy here. in Clarksville, and the majority of the ingredients in the dishes come from its fields. What isn’t grown in Clarksville usually comes from other area farmers, and this makes for a menu full of some of the freshest produce around. On our visit, we indulged in two salads that showcased that produce, the kale Caesar salad ($12) and the farmer’s green salad ($12). The kale was a nice addition to the classic Caesar, which also featured housemade croutons and some Parmesan cheese. The farmer’s green salad, meanwhile, proved to be a real showcase of ingredients, from greens to carrots to crispy leeks, all dressed in a flavorful tarragon vinaigrette. Plenty of large plates are available at Nathalie’s, but my attention was drawn to the farm green ravioli

By Matt Sorrell ($12) – a quartet of tender raviolis stuffed with spinach and topped with roasted tomatoes, along with shards of crispy Asiago cheese and pine nuts for crunchy contrast. A selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes also was offered. From it, we checked on the gnocchi ($18). These potato dumplings were lightly crisp on the outside and oh-so-tender on the inside. The other ingredients in this dish change seasonally – on our visit, the gnocchi was accented with a subtly tangy tomato broth. The bar at Nathalie’s boasts the largest selection of absinthe in town for those who hanker to get down with the green fairy (the spirit’s historical nickname, from the French phrase la fée verte). Cocktail fans should be pleased with the selection of libations

‌Story: In this “memory play,” Tennessee Williams recounts the melancholy tale of Tom Wingfield, an aspiring young writer who supports his mother and handicapped older sister by working at a shoe company in a job he detests. His mother, Amanda, lives in the past, recalling the grand life of a Southern belle, courted by more young men than she could count. Laura, his sister, mostly spends her time arranging and caring for her “glass menagerie” of finely wrought pieces depicting various animals. She didn’t quite make it through high school, and business school simply overwhelmed her. While Tom seeks refuge nightly at “the movies” beyond their cramped St. Louis apartment, he finally and reluctantly agrees to bring home a “gentleman caller” to appease Amanda’s fears that Laura will become an old maid. The caller, a friend from the warehouse named Jim O’Connor, coincidentally went to Soldan High School with Laura, stirring up fond and distant memories. But how will those bygone days translate to the present? Highlights: Upstream Theater opens executive artistic director Carrie Houk’s inaugural Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis, which features several events between May 11 and 15, with a performance of Williams’ first hit, a thinly veiled autobiographical account of the writer’s formative years here. Other Info: As Tom, J. Samuel Davis, an accomplished actor, proves equally effective portraying an old man recalling his troubled youth and an emerging artist chafing under his mother’s suffocating presence. It’s unfortunate, though, that young Tom has such gray hair – a jarring look. Director Philip Boehm shrewdly pairs Davis with Linda Kennedy as Amanda. It’s fascinating to watch Davis squirm and struggle to escape the shackles of his mother’s oppressive personality, which Kennedy

conveys in convincingly oblivious fashion. Logic and reality have no place in Amanda’s Wingfield home, where delusion reigns and desperation colors the search for a happy ending. After all, she still showcases a photo of her husband 16 years after he abandoned the family without looking back. Kennedy shows that no one ever escapes Amanda’s viselike grip, which Davis highlights with Tom’s volcanic bursts of temper that eventually lead to grudging reconciliation. Boehm also scores with his selection of Sydney Frasure as Laura and Jason Contini as Jim. Their star-crossed meeting dominates Act II as much as the mother-and-son duet dominates the first act. Frasure’s face variously expresses anxiety, forlornness and, briefly but beautifully, joy and serves as a major instrument for Boehm to accentuate Williams’ poetic prose and his characters’ vitality. Her performance is a delight. The Glass Menagerie fictionalized Williams’ unhappy times in St. Louis before he found fame, fortune and happier days in New Orleans and elsewhere prior to his turbulent life’s end in 1983. Ironically, it helped establish his career and reputation as one of the finest American playwrights of the 20th century. As such, it makes a fitting way to begin a festival devoted to the life and work of one of St. Louis’ most famous and talented prodigal sons. More information on the festival, which includes plays, events and speaking presentations, appears on its website, twstl.org.
