This edition of Ladue News boasts a central section devoted to our 2016 Platinum List. On page 10, Robyn Dexter, LN’s digital editor and staff writer, gives an overview of the processes behind that exclusive annual roster, as well as the March 24 gala celebrating its issuance – both sponsored by Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty. “The Gatesworth has the best restaurants around with unique dishes and excellent service. Resident Dr. Martin Gordon

At The Gatesworth, choices are mine to make. I can stay in and cook, order room service or meet up with my friends and family at one of three unique restaurants. To enjoy casual, delicious meals, I visit the Palm Court. For a more formal dining experience, I go the The Colonnade. And I stop by The Bistro for flatbread pizzas and other Mediterranean cuisine. In addition to the dozens of menu options, I can always ask Chef Brian Hardy to prepare something special. With flexible dining hours, private dining venues and comprehensive room service, I experience dining at The Gatesworth, My Way. For more information call (314) 993-0111 or stop by for a personal visit.

SENIOR LIVING YOUR WAY The Gatesworth is committed to equal housing opportunity and does not discriminate in housing and services because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin.

EDITOR ‌IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE: THIS VERY SPECIAL ISSUE SPOTLIGHTS the winners of the 2016 Ladue News Platinum List! Months in the making, this year’s Platinum List honors the best of the best in the St. Louis area, as voted by you, our readers. Starting on p. 41, you’ll see the winners in 12 categories and 68 subcategories. This year’s honorees include talented, dedicated and inspiring business owners, industry experts and professionals who work tirelessly to serve our community each day. Thank you to everyone who voted this year, and without further ado, please join me in congratulating all of the fabulous winners! We also celebrate another milestone in this issue, as we introduce a brand-new recurring column, Ready Readers, in our Arts & Culture section (p. 106). The column offers recommendations for new and fun children’s books, each with great lessons and messages for kids. Reading the column took me back to my childhood, when my mother would read my personal favorite, The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. Just the thought of that children’s book makes me smile, and we hope you and your little ones feel the same way about this month’s selections. All the best,

My own dad had both a heart attack and then a stroke and passed away 30 years ago. So all the research, all the developments, all the progress that’s been made would have helped him lead a longer life had all those things been available three decades ago. Great research – it all takes funding. We’re here to help with that effort. JIM WEDDLE, EVENT CO-CHAIR AND MANAGING PARTNER, EDWARD JONES, (SHOWN WITH WIFE AND EVENT CO-CHAIR, STACY)

ANNUAL GALA – “NEW YORK, NEW YORK”

J

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

azz St. Louis held its annual gala recently at the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis. A living Statue of Liberty greeted guests, who were encouraged to come dressed in cocktail attire with a New York flair. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres were served, followed by a sumptuous dinner. The real treat for the evening came after the meal, with a performance by the house band of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Stay Human featuring Jon Batiste. After hours, a cabaret was performed by Denise Thimes. Proceeds from the gala will benefit Jazz St. Louis’ education and outreach programs. Gene Dobbs Bradford and Josephine Weil served as co-chairs for the evening. Pam and Greg Trapp

WALL BALL

T

Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

he Majorette event space in Maplewood was filled with artists and “live” creative works, as well as art patrons, guests and friends there to support the 14th annual Wall Ball benefiting Artscope. Artists created pieces in a variety of media on two different floors, while the bar served attendees and a DJ spun wax. The unique event allowed guests to bid on artwork and to interact with artists as they created. Proceeds benefit Artscope’s educational programs, which provide a safe environment for children to support the arts.

Special Education Foundation leaps past where the line gets drawn on tax dollars and helps kids to see their unlimited potential. Assisting schools with program advancement and supplying hearing aids are only part of this organization’s mission. Creating opportunities for students with disabilities truly drives their work. The Fred Saigh Leadership Program teaches students how to become a leader by meeting with state representatives and taking part in editorial meetings at St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The resource room at Ackerman School provides donated clothing to students and families in need (as seen above). Discover the many ways this organization improves the lives of kids and their families by going online to sef-stl.org or calling 314-394-7030 to learn more.

hen government aid just doesn’t cut it, Special Education Foundation steps up to make the difference. The Special School District does everything within its power to improve the lives of students with unique needs through education. Yet resources are limited, and one nonprofit organization strives to fill the gap. “Our mission is to pick up where those tax dollars stop,” executive director Diane Buhr says. “There are [still so many] students whose families aren’t able to provide hearing aids, or opportunities for summer camps and scholarships.” The Women Leaders Group of Special Education Foundation is hosting a boutique shopping and fashion show as a way to raise money for much-needed community assistance, such as unique programs and projects, like a sensory light chair. Twenty-five vendors will offer clothing and accessories, from jewelry to hats, as well as paper goods and food. “Everyone has a good time

[with their] shopping experience. Each one of the vendors donates a gift to use in our silent auction,” Buhr says. “Then, 10 models wearing two [different] outfits from Details Women’s Boutique will walk in our fashion show.” This marks the seventh year for the grand event, and its success has garnered scholarships for young women while providing opportunities for program development at individual schools. “Each principal makes a presentation about what their students need. At Ackerman School, many students [came without] shoes and socks – they lacked so many things,” Buhr explains. “We provided them support for a school closet [pictured]. It even has an adult section to help parents prepare for jobs or in other ways.” Anyone can get involved with the organization’s goal to help children lead successful lives by volunteering at events, such as the Dan McLaughlin Golf Tournament, or taking part in a committee. From donating $60,000 in mini grants to schools and launching

leadership programs for high school students to providing $35,000 in hearing aids, Special Education Foundation goes above and beyond to continue the support where others cannot. “Today, people with disabilities are integrated into every situation and all aspects of society,” Buhr says. “Why shouldn’t these students [receive the same opportunities] and be trained to be leaders in our community?” Special Education Foundation strives to show kids the limitless possibilities for their future if given just the right kind of support.

DRESSING UP By Robyn Dexter

W

hen a longtime client of David Kent Richardson (of DKR Interiors) came to him wanting a dressing room designed in Carondelet Park, Richardson was thrilled with the idea. “[The client] is a fashionista with an abundance of clothes,” Richardson says. “But she had just remarried and didn’t have room for her clothes when she moved into the house.” Richardson didn’t want to knock out walls or expand closets, as doing so would damage the value of the home. Instead, they settled on a dressing room. The space would have clothing racks and provide space to get ready for the day. “I’ve worked with her more than 20 years,” Richardson says. “We just kind of think on the same page at the same time and collaborate very well. She wanted personal space – something that was all hers.” Richardson and the client incorporated a zebra rug, a small Venetian table, a large mirror from the client’s previous home and a piece of art from her husband’s art collection. Then, Richardson worked with the client on custom clothing racks, with space for clothing, handbags and accessories. “It was such a fun project,” he says. “Everyone deserves a dressing room.”

Uncover this cool, contemporary space in Ladue as you enter through a California-inspired outdoor entertainment area, showcasing a saltwater pool with a glass enclosure and gorgeous landscape lighting. Dark oak-herringbone flooring and vaulted ceilings beckon you in to explore the stylish residence. Start with the living room, which features a stunning fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows and wet bar, making it the ideal place to welcome guests. Venture into the metallic kitchen and uncover four Gaggenau ovens, two of which are steam-operated, and dual refrigerators. Picture serving a decadent spread in the immaculate dining room, framed by platinum-leaf wallpaper and topped with a dramatic chandelier. Deck access allows seamless movement from dinner to drinks on the expansive screened porch. Relax inside the incredible master suite, complete with his-and-her baths and a dressing room. A pneumatic elevator or glass spiral stairs will transport you to the finished lower level, where you’ll find an additional family room and fireplace. All this and more creates a spectacular space you’ll simply want to claim as your own.

AGENT PROFILE

Joanne Quick OF DIELMANN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

By Amanda Dahl

Quick’s avid research helps her find the ideal home for buyers, even if it’s found off-market; also, her marketing expertise ensures sellers effectively reach active buyers. “The most challenging aspect of the business is the seasonality. I meet that challenge by continuing to work hard year-round on marketing, networking, research and observation,” Quick explains. It’s this dedication that proves most effective when it comes to sealing the deal for her clients. She remarks that this year should be a record one, though, with sales volumes and pricing on the rise, and inventories remaining low. “If you’re a seller, it’s the perfect time to sell,” she declares. “If you’re a buyer, [get] a wellconnected agent [who] can help you find a home before it even hits the market.” No matter which side you fall on, Quick has your solution.

FEATURED LISTING 523 WEST DRIVE This 4-bedroom, 4 full-bathroom home in University City is listed for $694,000. Discover the perfect condo alternative just a half-block from Clayton. This 4,000-square-foot complete gutrehab, with an expansive addition of 2,000 square feet, now offers 4 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms. Enjoy the first-floor master ensuite, or the open floor plan built for entertaining, with a spacious great room, wine cellar and private dipping pool.

QUICK PHOTO BY RANDALL KAHN‌, HOME PHOTO BY REED R. RADCLIFFE‌

‌Joanne Quick allows passion to drive her career as a real estate agent for Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty. Sixteen years ago, she rehabbed her first property and unearthed an ardor for the housing industry. “I love architecture, design, scouting out neighborhoods, following trends, the rehab process – everything! I have been hooked on real estate ever since,” she says. Her 30-plus years as a professional, with a background in marketing communications and sales, including 13 years as a real estate agent, lend themselves to her current position. Quick utilizes her skills of research and development to create a strong plan for each client. “I experience a rush during negotiations!” she says. “That’s where the rubber meets the road. Expert negotiations can make or break a deal. No buyer wants to pay too much, and no seller wants to leave money on the table. That’s a big part of my job – to ensure my buyers and sellers are getting the best deal possible.”

What started as a hip Cincinnati neighborhood pizza joint with a cool vibe, great music, tasty pizza and a stellar beer selection has grown into a multi-state chain that is still able to maintain its distinct culture across all 22 locations (six of which are in the St. Louis area). In a city where square-cut pizza is king, Dewey’s success must taste extra sweet. Dewey’s Pizza, multiple locations, deweyspizza.com

Best Face Forward

Q&A JONATHAN ADER With

By Amy Koehler

‌Elite Diorshow national makeup artist Jonathan Ader has had editorial work featured in Allure and Harper’s Bazaar and has worked with top international models from Ford Models and Elite Model Management, as well as many celebrities. Ader recently gave LN some juicy industry insight and even a heads-up on new product launches. What beauty tip should every lady know? Don’t get too caught up in trends unless that trend looks flattering on you. Stick to something that enhances your features, and always start by preparing the skin so it and the makeup look beautiful. What common mistake do most women make? Most woman do not properly prepare the skin. The condition of the skin is 80 percent of the entire look. The best makeup only looks as good as the skin it’s on, so it is of utmost importance to adopt an amazing skin care routine using a serum, moisturizer and skin perfector like Dior Dreamskin ($150). What’s trending for spring and summer? Spring and summer are all about giving the complexion the glow of a bronzed goddess. For eyes, we are seeing coral tones of sunset, sand-dune nudes and subtle pops of color like azure blue. Lip trends are moving away from a matte look and adopting a high-gloss finish with pops of color that will take your lips from day to play. Dior is leading the way with its Milky Dots Summer 2016 Collection that will hit stores in early April along with 18 new shades of Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss ($36). I want to look “red carpet ready” in as little time as possible. How much time would that be, and what are the minimal products I need? You need an empire of stylists and assistance to get “red carpet ready” just like the celebrities. They start months in advance preparing for award season. But products like Glow Maximizer ($42) add luminosity to the complexion and give you the JLo glow, while Airflash ($62) creates a flawless, photo-ready finish. Diorshow Blackout ($28.50) will help make the eyes “pop,” while Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss creates plump, hydrated lips. When and where can LN readers make an appointment to meet you or book a consultation? I’m taking clients by appointment only at [three area] Dillard’s stores from March 30 through April 2. … We are usually booked pretty heavily, so if you are interested, call to reserve your appointment quickly. What other insider secrets would you like to share? People always ask how I achieve such healthy-looking, beautiful skin on my clients. I believe in using products to achieve a glow in the skin before I even start makeup.

80   LadueNews.com | March 25, 2016

This is so important because it really allows the foundation to look even better when it is applied. I also make sure that when the foundation is applied, it looks invisible so you don’t see a texture on top of the skin. What three things does every woman need to make her eyes “pop”? Great eyeliner, fantastic mascara and a perfect brow. Red-carpet looks don’t have a lot of vibrant-colored shadows. You notice lashes, liner and beautiful brows. If you get these three right, you could possibly even skip eyeshadow.

F

ueled by a passion to provide a onestop shop for both Western and ethnic fashion, Samrina Haseeb started Sanaaz Designer Couture. Design had always been Samrina’s passion, and she dreamed of starting her own boutique someday. After her children went to college, she pursued her dream and opened the Creve Coeur boutique on Olive Boulevard. She calls the boutique a “contemporary fusion boutique,” bringing ethnic and Western culture together. “Certain clothes we get from designers; others we design ourselves,” she says. “The material [for the clothes] comes from all over the world. I travel a lot and get the best material from all over the world. I sketch the look, determine the color scheme and inform my tailors how to arrange the design. My sister finalizes the process.” Samrina notes that upcoming trends for her boutique’s style of clothing are vibrant colors and longer lengths – a style that is universally popular. For those seeking ethnic-style clothing, Samrina cautions her customers about buying suits from unofficial social media pages. She says oftentimes, the outfits shown are not what you actually get. “It can be a big hassle for individuals to go back home and shop,” she says. “It makes a difference

when you see the material, try it on and buy it [yourself]. My prices are very reasonable.” Samrina has done fashion shows all over the world, from Dubai to Dallas to St. Louis. She says it can be discouraging to see how some competitors act in the industry, and has dealt with people taking pictures of her designs and copying them. The key to overcoming these kinds of issues is patience, she says. “Starting your own line doesn’t take off right away, but slowly,” she says. “You have to be knowledgeable of your patrons’ tastes. Patterns should be dynamic, not repetitive.” Stepping into Samrina’s boutique, customers will find everything from prom dresses to ethnic-inspired suits to lavish bracelets and necklaces. Samrina says the process of building her business has been going well, and she has the support of many dedicated customers. “Running a business like this is a serious venture for me, not a hobby,” she says. “I’ve come to know

Coping With a Child With a Chronic Illness

R

ecently, my colleague, child neurologist Dr. John Mantovani, was featured in a TV news segment discussing the challenges of caring for a child diagnosed with autism. Autism is one of many illnesses that result in significant lifestyle changes for affected children and their families. Although I have been blessed with healthy children and grandchildren, some of us are faced with the challenge of caring for a child with a serious chronic illness. When parents learn their child has a chronic illness, they may initially feel anger toward the illness, their partner, family or even the child. This is normal. You and your child will experience greater well-being if you’re able to manage your emotions and reactions during this trying time.

What’s the best way to move forward?  Take action. Become well educated about the illness and such things as its expected course, treatment options, side effects of treatment and the like. Do your own research, but also rely on the experts caring for your child. In this, as in many situations, knowledge empowers us.  Learn to manage your own stress. Moms – usually

the primary caretaker of children – often feel more stress than dads. Both parents must work together to manage the stress, their marriage, their family and their child’s illness. Many parents find their loss of control is the worst aspect of the situation. They are unsure of the future, feel unable to comfort their child and can feel estranged from their child and family. Studies have shown children whose parents have the most difficulty dealing with this stress are prone to have more difficulty managing their illness.  What works? Take advantage of your support network of family, friends and faith. Realize you must take care of you in order to care for your child. Make the time for yourself – eat well, get enough sleep, exercise often and stay connected to the things you have always done to relax. Communicate with your spouse and family. ConSIdErInG A divorce?

By Charlotte VM Ottley

“‌ Brace yourself. The inevitable change in life is coming. Getting through it is key to your success. At these times, believe that you never walk alone. Just get through it.” –An Ottley-ism We all prepare for success and look forward to all the joys tomorrow brings. However, change happens. For some people, moreover, good change can be as challenging as bad change and impact us to the core. Bad change, in particular, makes us feel caught off guard and wonder how to deal with it – as in these examples. Health Challenges. Heart attacks and strokes are occurring at higher rates and younger ages than ever before, whether from stress, bad habits or low self-esteem. Take care of your health for yourself, for the ones you love and for those who depend on you. Should a health change come, face it with the vision to survive, the humility to accept others’ help and the commitment to serve others through it all. Becoming a Caregiver. In a turning of the tables, baby boomers have become caregivers to our parents, our spouses, other family members or all of the preceding – a rude awakening in responsibility and role reversal. Also, although today is their day, tomorrow might be yours. Give care as you would like others to care for you. Loss of a Loved One. For this one, I can recommend only an exercise of faith. Know your loved one would want only the best for you. Remember things that fortify you. Sometimes while a loved one remains alive, challenges might cause a lack of communication or interaction with him or her. If so and if you will have regrets after his or her passing, do and say what you need to before that passing. You will be stronger for doing so, and so will your loved one. Loss of a Job or Business. Have you heard the statement “If it doesn’t fit, don’t force it”? All jobs are not a perfect fit, but they are a means to an end. Even so, bring your best attitude, skill and respect to the job. Make sure you are not causing your own misery. What you do today becomes your reference for tomorrow. Allegations That Tarnish Your Reputation. Do not protest too much. Keep being the best you can be. Do not get distracted. Let those who truly know you be your champions. Stand tall based on who you know you are. Shoulder responsibilities if they are yours to shoulder. Do what is necessary for retribution, and move on. Divorces and Other Breakups. Previously, when people told me they were getting a divorce or breaking up, I would say I was sorry. Today I silently wish them well because I realize each person must find his or her own peace of mind. If breaking up brings peace, then doing so vastly improves on staying in a relationship for all of the wrong reasons. When you leave, leave knowing that you did all you could do.

Feeling

In-spa-red InBy Denise Kruse

Astheticians at three of St. Louis’ best day spas reveal how to achieve a healthy glow for spring.

W

inter, even the mild one we just had in St. Louis, can be brutal on the skin. Cold, blustery air and forced dry indoor heat pair with negligent hydration, while more sedentary months fuel long evenings of Netflix and wine. As a result, the skin breaks down from the inside out – dehydration can give it a shriveled appearance, and outdoor cold plus indoor heat can make the face flaky, dry, chapped and tight. Even those of us who religiously follow a personal facial regimen throughout the season find ourselves combating these issues, leaving us spending late winter and early spring scrambling to find a solution for sloughing off dermal dullness to reveal healthy skin and a radiant glow when warmer temps arrive. To learn the best in-spa and at-home regimen combination to prepare skin for spring, we spoke to the experts at The Face & The Body Day Spa, Ginger Bay Salon Spa and The Salon & Spa at The Chase Park Plaza. All three of these top day spas in the St. Louis area offer haircuts, color and treatments; waxing; massage therapy; and manicures, pedicures and full spa services such as facials, peels, and body scrubs and treatments. At all three of its locations, The Face & The Body additionally offers laser hair removal and injectable services, such as Botox, in its Medispa. For the most basic at-home solution for radiance, the best thing to do is exfoliate, according to Jeni Pitchford, aesthetician at The Salon & Spa at The Chase Park Plaza in the Central West End. “A lot of people say they want to increase radiance; they want to have smoother skin; they want to see improved texture and diminish lines and wrinkles,” Pitchford says. For in-spa exfoliation, Pitchford recommends Aveda’s Dual Exfoliation Treatment facial, which produces the best results for smoothness and increased radiance, as well as for getting rid of dead skin cells. “I would not call it the most relaxing [treatment],” adds Galina Nerush, aesthetician at Ginger Bay Salon Spa, which has locations in Kirkwood and Town and Country, “but it looks fantastic.” Using Aveda’s all-natural products, the dual-exfoliating treatment, available at both Ginger Bay locations, begins with a facial scrub to exfoliate dry skin. From there, Aveda’s pure plant peel is applied, an application that contains glucosamine, which helps skin produce more collagens and provide firmness and shape to the face. At the end of the dual-exfoliating treatment, a soothing cooling mask is applied, allowing clients to leave their facial appointment with a beautiful glow – no redness or irritation. “It’s perfect for guests who are looking for natural, botanical-based products,” Nerush says. “This treatment combines naturally derived mechanical and biochemical exfoliation methods that help improve skin texture, clarity and radiance.” Nerush also recommends Ginger Bay’s glycolic-acid treatment from its

Murad line of products, which exfoliates dead skin cells and revitalizes skin to ease fine lines and wrinkles. Available only at its Kirkwood location, this series of treatments increases in strength over time, improving skin tone and youthfulness with each visit. Nerush recommends four to six treatments spaced no more than two weeks apart, with subsequent monthly treatments to maintain maximum skin health and appearance. For a more intensive approach, try microdermabrasion. “Microdermabrasion is for somebody who has oilier, thicker skin that gets a lot of dry buildup on the surface,” Nerush says. The treatment removes the topmost layer of the skin by exfoliating with natural diamond chips, which eliminate and vacuum up dead skin cells. Barbara Trevino, director of the Derma Spa at The Face & The Body, agrees and recommends following up a microdermabrasion treatment with an intense pulsed light (IPL) photo facial, available at Brentwood. With this treatment, a light-based piece of equipment is attracted to, treats and dramatically improves sun damage, brown spots, enlarged pores, broken or distended capillaries, redness and rosacea by stimulating collagen production. For at-home care, our experts advise being consistent with cleansing routines. “The most important thing is using a very good line of products and making sure you cleanse well before going to bed – never go to bed with makeup on,” Trevino says. And of course, use sunscreen every day to protect yourself against pigmentation and other signs of aging. Our experts recommend using SPF (sun protection factor) 30 from day to day. “If you’re going to be out any more than walking from the car to the inside of a building – if you’re working in your yard, walking – use a higher SPF and wear a hat,” Trevino says. “And do not forget your hands with the [sunscreen] – that’s why we get the brown spots on the hands – but we can take care of the brown spots with IPL, also.” Monthly facials also are recommended as part of a routine to keep skin rejuvenated. “Typically, a facial will be more advanced, with a deeper cleanse and exfoliation than [people are] doing at home,” Pitchford says. Don’t forget that skin hydration happens from the inside out. “Hydration is key,” Nerush advises. If you’re still unsure, leave it to the experts – all three spas offer a free consultation, so each treatment plan can be tailored to a particular client’s skin issues and desired results.

ummer is fast approaching. If you are worried about your appearance in shorts or swimsuits, West County Plastic Surgeons can help. Drs. Terry Myckatyn and Marissa Tenenbaum are board-certified Washington University plastic surgeons, and they now offer a new therapy to treat cellulite. Cellfina is an FDA-approved treatment of cellulite on the buttocks and thighs. The product has a 96-percent satisfaction rate after two years. “It’s done in the office by our surgeons, with the patient awake,” Tenenbaum says. “It only takes about an hour and a half, and there’s little downtime and bruising.” Cellfina addresses the primary cause of cellulite, the fibrous connective bands that pull on the skin’s surface and create a dimpled, bumpy look on the buttocks or outer thighs. Mason Road. The space is twice the size of the previous location and offers a luxurious, spalike environment. “We’re trying to cater to both our surgical patients as well as our patients who want noninvasive procedures,” Myckatyn says. “We have more room for things like Botox, Cellfina, laser therapies, including hair removal, scar reduction, vein reduction and skin tightening.” He also notes the office offers medical-grade skin care for a complete facial experience. “All of this is done in a comfortable, friendly environment,” he says.

onsilience focuses on primary Rhône and Burgundy varietals grown in Santa Barbara County, California. The winery started in

EXCITING

1999, with its first vintage being the 1997 Santa Barbara County Syrah. After going to the enology program at California State University, Fresno, co-owner Brett Escalera worked at Byron Winery and then Fess Parker Winery. In 2013, Escalera and partner Tom Daughters became part of the Sanger Family of Wines. Syrah likes a warm climate and has done well from California up the West Coast to Washington State. At one point, it was thought to be the next rising star, like Merlot and Pinot Noir, but never gained enough traction. Syrah has long been known in northern Rhône, where winemakers make great, brooding, age-worthy Syrah. Northern Rhône is small in comparison to southern Rhône, which produces almost 10 times as much wine. The great appellations include Côte-Rôtie AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), known for its aromatics – which makes sense, as winemakers are allowed to use up

to 20 percent Viognier in this Syrah. Cornas AOC tends to be slightly more masculine, being 100 percent Syrah. Hermitage AOC is Syrah with up to 10 percent of two permitted white grapes, Marsanne and Roussanne. Crozes-Hermitage AOC (an outlying appellation of Hermitage) is Syrah and up to 15 percent Marsanne and Roussanne. Saint-Joseph AOC Syrah has up to 10 percent Marsanne and Roussanne. Australia – where Syrah is known as Shiraz – has gained considerable fame with this grape. That continent’s much warmer climate produces big, fruit-forward Shiraz wines that can be jamlike in style compared to those of the Rhône. Food Pairings: Big, bold wines demand bolder flavors – barbecue (especially spare ribs), grilled duck, lamb, mushrooms, sausage, steak, venison and hard, aged cheese. Certified Sommelier Stanley Browne is the owner of Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves and Downtown at the MX.

J

azz at the Bistro has been a fixture in Grand Center for years. In 2014, though, it went through a $10 million facelift that completely reconfigured the space, including creating a sleek and stylish separate lounge/restaurant area next to the performance area, perfect for drinks and dinner before entertainment at Jazz at the Bistro, The Fabulous Fox Theatre or one of the other area venues. The lounge is cozy, featuring small tables, soft seating and plenty of room at the bar. Also, a large flatscreen TV broadcasts the musical performance going on next door via closed circuit. The north wall of the space also has plenty of windows, perfect for watching the parade of theatergoers coming and leaving.

LadueNews.com | MARCH 25, 2016

The menu at Jazz at the Bistro is the same whether you’re doing dinner and a show or dining in the lounge, and it features a good selection of traditional fare with a slightly southern bent. The venue also offers a three-course prix fixe special for $30, which we took full advantage of twice over and is quite the bargain, as the plates served are full-sized – no tasting portions here! On a prix fixe visit, we kicked things off with the Mediterranean hummus, featuring the requisite olives and pita, and the house-battered catfish bites, a filling app served with a tasty white rémoulade. We then segued into the Mayfair salad, classically decked out with romaine, bacon, croutons and grated Asiago on top, along with the namesake dressing, judiciously applied.

By Matt Sorrell On to the mains, with the country-fried steak and beef burger. The steak, a hearty piece of meat coated in a crispy batter, came with creamy mashed potatoes, crispy haricots verts and a thick gravy. The burger was a straight-ahead take on America’s sandwich, built on the foundation of a hefty patty topped with fried pickles, a pepper-and-onion sauté and soft pimento cheese. All of these flavors worked well together to accent the meat and not cover it up. The burger came with “sidewinder fries,” a thicker, amped-up version of curly fries accompanied by a deliciously spicy dipping sauce. This bounty all paired nicely with a glass of Parker Station Pinot Noir ($9) and a dram of Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon ($8.50).

& A Show If/Then

IF/THEN PHOTO COURTESY OF JOAN MARCUS

‌Story: After spending 12 years in Phoenix, Elizabeth is back in New York City, where she lived with her ex-husband and taught city planning at a local university. Upon her return, she coincidentally meets two friends in Madison Square Park – her new neighbor, Kate, and her college lover, Lucas, who now is bisexual. Kate thinks Elizabeth needs a new name to spur on her new life and decides to call her “Liz.” Lucas agrees about a new name, but prefers “Beth.” From that point forward, Elizabeth’s two alternate lives are played out simultaneously. As Liz, not once but three separate times, she meets an Army doctor returning from active duty. Eventually, she agrees to a date with him that leads to marriage and two sons. Her husband, Josh, also matches up Lucas with his physician friend, David, while Kate falls in love with a woman named Anne. Liz seems happy with her new life, even though she doubted marriage ever was a good idea. At the same time in the park, Beth joins Lucas for a protest against an urban-development project. She also receives a phone call from Stephen, an old grad-school friend, who is in New York City’s urbanplanning department. Stephen invites Beth to join the department, an invitation she accepts, and she finally achieves her dream of planning the future for such a vibrant city. When Beth learns she’s pregnant, she informs Lucas. He asks her to marry him, but she declines and doesn’t see him again for two years. Ultimately, she reunites with Lucas and then, again in Madison Square Park, tells Kate and Anne that she’s decided to run for the city council. Shortly thereafter, Beth is approached

By Mark Bretz by an Army doctor who says he’s recently returned from duty overseas. Highlights: The creative team that collaborated on the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical Next to Normal reunited for this Broadway musical that debuted in 2014 and ran for one year and 430 performances, including previews, before closing in 2015. The national tour that began in October 2015 has now reached The Fabulous Fox Theatre with a strong cast that includes Jackie Burns as Elizabeth, a role she previously filled on Broadway. Other Info: With music by Tom Kitt, lyrics and a book by Brian Yorkey and direction by Michael Greif, If/Then follows the legacy of Next to Normal by presenting a complex story in musical form. Unlike the latter, though, If/Then can be quite difficult to follow, continually confusing as it jumps between two different storylines. Clues let the audience know if it’s “Liz” or “Beth” onstage, but Greif’s often-puzzling direction also can make them difficult to separate. Yorkey’s book presents an interesting and whimsical premise that more-astute observers doubtless will find enthralling in its execution. I myself frequently struggled to follow what was occurring, though, leaving a forest of uncertainty only to meander in again throughout the show’s two acts and two hours and 45 minutes of running time.

To cap the evening off, we indulged in the bananas Foster French Quarter beignets. These confections, two to a plate, are just the right size to end things on a sweet note without overdoing it. They also go well with a bit of the aforementioned bourbon. Grand Center is a busy place, especially when multiple shows are going on, so give yourself a bit of leeway to make it through traffic if you’re going close to showtime. Also, the area has plenty of paid parking lots, though it can be hard to find street parking that’s close to the action.

San n FFranciSco’S Bay Bridge iS no n longer the leSS-attractive ounterpart to the iconic co olden gate Bridge. go By Judy Crowell | Photos by Judy and Lisa Crowell

enowned American artist Leo Villareal transformed San Francisco’s Bay Bridge into a dawn-to-dusk extravaganza from 2013 to 2015, using 25,000 individual white LEDs (light-emitting diodes) along 1.8 miles of the bridge to create mesmerizing moving patterns of sparkle. So entranced were locals and visitors that California commissioned him to turn this temporary wonderland into a permanent exhibit, which opened at the end of January. Some of the best views are from Hotel Vitale, which anchors not only the area surrounding the bridge, but also the spectacular Ferry Building, Fisherman’s Wharf and Embarcadero. The hotel’s panoramic views, limestone bathrooms, large workstations with ergonomic desk chairs, penthouse suites with rooftop soaking tubs and bustling outdoor patio restaurant, Americano, can set the tone for the rest of a visitor’s trip to San Francisco. Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39, with its resident sea lions, continue to draw some of the largest crowds to the waterfront’s well-known stops, including Ghirardelli Square, Cannery Shopping Center, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, Floating Forbes Island Restaurant and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. I did a “been there, done that” tour of the top hits before heading back to the spectacular people’s marketplace in the Ferry Building, completed in the beaux-arts style in 1898.

One could spend a day or more wandering the food and gift hall (built as a terminal for ferries traveling across San Francisco Bay) without growing bored or hungry. Casual eateries dominate, with The Slanted Door at the top of the price and “formality” chart, though nothing is formal here. Here, the views of the bay are predictably lovely, and the nationally acclaimed Vietnamese cuisine is outstanding: Favorites are the vegetarian spring rolls and cellophane noodles with Dungeness crab. Newly opened is Boulibar, with its prix-fixe menu and fabulous cocktails five nights a week. Sit at the cheese-and-dairy bar at Cowgirl Sidekick for a quick, inexpensive breakfast or delicious bowl of soup with salad for lunch. Marketbar offers a Mediterranean menu, and Gott’s Roadside has the best doggone milkshakes and hamburgers I’ve ever tasted – but think “outside the box,” and try its mouthwatering ahi tuna burger. If you prefer carryout, most places offer that option, and every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., there’s the most incredible farmers’ market you’ll ever experience. Unique gift items lie at every turn in glassybaby, Heath Ceramics, The Gardener, Book Passage and The Imperial Tea Court, with charming little packages of chocolates, jellies, stationery and all sorts of goodies at its various stalls. continued on page 106 Pictured far left: Ubiquitous sailboats on the bay. Westminster chimes resound from the Ferry Building clock every hour and half-hour and will make you strain your neck to see its four beautiful dials, each 22 feet in diameter atop this 245-foot-high tower. A 1½-mile walk or five-minute ride away is Saints Peter and Paul Church on Telegraph Hill, known as the “Italian Cathedral of the West.” As gorgeous on the inside as it is on the outside, it’s where Joe DiMaggio served as an altar boy and where he was first married. His second time around, with Marilyn Monroe, DiMaggio had to settle for posing for photos on the steps of the church because he had not obtained an annulment from his first marriage. Right around the corner is another institution: Mama’s on Washington Square for omelets, homemade jams and pastries. Expect a line. San Francisco is a multifaceted, always exciting metropolis, and through this manageable slice, you can explore some of the best this beautiful, vast city has to offer. Pictured clockwise from left: glassybaby; a Ferry Building vendor; Mama’s on Washington Square; the Ferry Building promenade; Saints Peter and Paul Church.

Ready Readers

Connecting With Our Children Through Reading

A

re your kids or grandkids always focused on their “devices”? Do you miss the magic of having a nice, lively conversation with your young ones? How can you reclaim their attention? Simple – read together. More than just a good story, great children’s literature lays an avenue for discussion. The preschool years are critical in language development because 90 percent of language is acquired before the age of 5. The breadth of a child’s vocabulary when entering kindergarten strongly predicts third-grade reading scores – an indicator of future success in school. The best way for children to learn language and build vocabulary is through conversing with adults. And if you’re lucky, these conversations also will build connections between you and your children – and between your children and the world around them. This month, Ready Readers gave 10,000 copies of the highly acclaimed book On the Launch Pad: A Counting Book About Rockets by Michael Dahl to the children we serve, ages 3 to 5, in the St. Louis area. A fun book to

106

LadueNews.com | MARCH 25, 2016

By Lisa Greening, Sheila Oliveri and Nora Steele read and explore, On the Launch Pad allows a young reader to discover the facets of a rocket launch, while learning to count down from 12 to 1. Conversation points include radar dishes and control panels, all the different workers needed to send a rocket into space and what kinds of training those workers need. Be sure to note that in the book, men and women of all different ethnicities are working together. After reading the story, go outside and look at the moon (even in the daytime), identify a planet or constellation in the sky, launch a Stomp Rocket, visit the Saint Louis Science Center or Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis, or plan a trip to Cape Canaveral in Florida. For the younger child or grandchild, from babies to

children age 2, Ready Readers recommends the richly imaginative adventure book I Wish I Were a Pilot by Stella Blackstone. In it, your young reader will meet people who travel in many different ways, whether by horse, plane, hot-air balloon, boat, train and so forth. What amazing conversations the two of you can have about the way we get from here to there – and the excitement to be found along the way. Together, plan a visit to the Museum of Transportation, ride the train at the Saint Louis Zoo, attend the Great Forest Park Balloon Race, or just look at the planes crisscrossing the sky and wonder where their passengers are headed. At Ready Readers, we know that children who read, succeed. Reading aloud leads to deep thinking and good discussion. This critical daily practice with your children helps them build a strong foundation in early literacy. Just watch their minds expand and your relationship grow richer! To share your love of reading with more children, consider volunteering for Ready Readers. Our volunteers read high-quality children’s literature each week with the same classroom of preschool children from low-income communities in St. Louis. Visit readyreaders.org for more information.
