GOVAN BATHHOUSE

Aim of this project is to design a Bathhouse on a chosen site in Govan.

Area should be around 3200 square meters. The building should provide facilities such as salon, gift shop, restaurant, gym, treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor bath, saunas and steam rooms.

This document is supposed to describe the background of the site and area.

Numerous design stages were involved in the development of final proposals.

Whole design process is described in this document.

Pearce institute, built 1906 to support shipyard workers' families

Fairfield Shipyard used to be one of the biggest in the country. Today Fairfield Museum is located here.

Elder park was created for 'r ecreation and amusement' of Govan people.

Govan Dry Docks, built between 1869 and 1875, were used until 1988.

HISTORY First mention about Govan is from 6th century, when the first Christian settlement was established here. Later it was one of the major centers of Kingdom of Strathclyde. Some of the relicts of Viking era are stored in Old Parish Church. Govan gained world reputation in 19th century because of its ship industry, leader in innovation and manufacture with great workforce. After most of the shipyards being closed in 1960's , area started facing unemployment, criminality and other problems. Most of them are stll prevailing, even though the district is undergoing regeneration.

SITE DECISION I chose site B - Govan Dry Docks - because of its history, atmosphere, building possibilities and also to bring life to this abandoned and forgotten part of Govan.

This site also provides calm environment and beautiful views across the river which I find more beneficial and essential for locating of a bathhouse than the site next to the church.

The object will be situated in the southern part right on the riverbank.

After establishing the shipyards in late 1870's , Govan started spreading as the industry created thousands of working places. Development changed the character of the area and the Clyde. After the end of shipbuilding, most of the objects on the site were burnt down or destroyed by vandals. Currently one object is still remaining in the southern part of the site.

The operation diagram takes in account separation of wet and dry traffic in the building. It is also trying to make the access from entrance to the main spa area as smooth as possible. I also tried to separate spaces for public and for staff. The areas of spaces were determined in accordance to the brief.

Original conceptual idea was based on building on the biggest part of the site, heading towards Riverside Museum (Designs A, B). On the other hand, option C tried to bring new feature to one of the graving docks by connecting two different places with a bridge. All designs tried to take advantage of views of the city, river and Riverside Museum.

All concepts were heading to the new industrial design, which fits the historical and cultural legacy of the site and whole district but also combines new technologies with traditional materials. The object is about to take inspiration from factory and shipyard objects, halls and structure.

After consideration of all advantages and disadvantages option C was taken for further development, as it was in wider conversation with the graving dock and was taking on account most of the advantages of the site.

The object was spreading across the northern graving dock. Two parts were connected by sheltered bridge which should have provided seating for the restaurant or waiting area for reception (Ideas C1, C2). In both cases it also provided view of Glasgow skyline.

The original object, old stone shipyard building, was implemented into the complex. Idea of the concept was to preserve the old object, finding a new function for it - outside swimming pool or atrium / relax area.

Except main access from the nearby street, area will be connected with pedestrian promenade on the Clydebank, which is now ending on the edge of residential area across the eastern graving dock. After connection, a passage from the bathhouse to the Old Parish Church, Govan Cross and ferry departure point will be provided.

Because of inappropiate connection of spaces I decided to put the parts of the building more together and relocated it on one bank only. The whole complex is going to surround the original object where the outside pool is going to be situated. The object will shape the area and divide it into public space at the entrance and private space behind, which could be used by customers of the spa or restaurant.

GROUND FLOOR CONCEPTUAL PLAN FIRST FLOOR, 1:500

Floor plans were developed with using ideas from the previous stages of design process. After making conceptional floor plan, many development steps led to the sketches of ground and first floor plans shown above.

In the design I tried to focus on the previous idea of perceiving the original object, which is divided from the rest of the structure by corridors or open spaces, making it an object inside an object, hidden old feature inside the new neighbourhood. That way people can admire the piece of the old shipyard industry.

Other spaces were connected according to the operation diagram with small changes and improvements. Different changing rooms were provided for spa and the gym. Besides restaurant, small cafĂŠ at the spa entrance was established.

For better access for restaurant supplies and trash collection from the restaurant, I decided to design a bridge over the graving dock (as in previous stages of design process), making restaurant accessible from two directions and making the space behind restaurant public.

Private space for spa customers is going to be between treatment rooms and pool objects, solved as a green roof terrace providing views over the river.

RESTAURANT INTERIOR

KITCHEN AND STORAGES CONCEPTIUAL PLAN

Restaurant is situated in the western part of the object and is accessible from the reception as well as from outside. Transparent envelope provides view at the Glasgow skyline. Two floors should accommodate enough tables to fulfil needs of all spa customers. The second level is accessible through staircase placed in the magnificient tower of the original object.

Supplies and refuse accesses are located at the back, separated from the outside sitting area by green plant barrier.

APPROACH FROM RECEPTION

MAIN SPACE AND OUTSIDE POOLS IDEAS

I decided to divide the bath part into a swimming pool for recreational swimming and a spa part for relaxing, socialization and healing purposes.

The latter should provide ice bath, fire bath, Roman bath system as well as social bath, inspired by Roman spa, which combined healing function with socialization. Therefore space will be divided in two parts - bright, noisier part with views across the river and calm, darker part which will create an atmosphere of privacy, calmness and closeness.

Outside pools will be located in the original building.
