So here it is - my FIRST edition of Circler. When I stood from the floor in 2019 at Leicester conference as our association’s Media & PR Officer, I had no idea that I would feel so passionate about standing again and how much the role would become a part of me. From expanding my knowledge with social media to designing my first Circler magazine, it has been an amazing experience. Since leaving school, I’ve had a variety of jobs within the care sector. However I have always had a passionate for creative writing (even being dyslexic) and I’ll admit sitting down to a blank screen to write my first ever magazine was nerve-wracking! But with help from an amazing past Circler and an amazing team of helpers, it started to come together. I realised I wasn’t doing this on my own: it’s a team effort, which gave me the confidence needed to carry on. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this edition - it couldn’t have happened without you! This edition marks not only the Queen’s platinum jubilee but our 85th Charter as well as our first National Conference since 2019 due to the pandemic. Let’s celebrate all our amazing achievements and friendship!

4 1 Your National President

CIRCLING YEAR!

From Fiona Bull... #IAmCircle

THE SEMI-COLON acknowledges that Circle has hit a rocky patch with a decline in numbers… but we are still going... it’s also a symbol used by those who have hit rock bottom but who have survived… our story isn’t over yet. 2022-2023

THE RED AND WHITE ROSES link to our original heritage logo as we should never forget the thousands of women that have gone before us.

THE LOGO IS BASED ON A TATTOO – I’ve always wanted one but have never yet been brave enough… the colour of the year is red – it's bright and bold, demands attention and represents our passion for Circle.

THE HEART represents my Area: Area 4, the Heart of England, and the stitching on the heart is for my Circle, Redditch, the home of needles. Together they are a thank you to those who have supported me and encouraged me from the moment I joined back in 2013.

I’m honoured to be your National President for 2022/23 and am looking forward to a full-on year travelling around GB&I and meeting as many Circlers as Thepossible.invasion of Ukraine, the fuel crisis and rising inflation are a worry but look at how our communities rallied round to support each other with COVID. Whatever this year throws at us, we will find a way for fun, friendship and fundraising to Wethrive.come from all walks of life with different strengths and weaknesses but together we form something special, our Circle. We should embrace our individuality, celebrate our differences and know that each member shapes our Circle through the experiences that make her, her perfectly unique self. My theme for the year is simple, when asked ‘What is Ladies Circle?’ I want every member to be proud to say, ‘I am Circle’

MY HANDWRITING hasn’t been tidied up, it’s rough around the edges because no one should have to fake who they are to belong.

Armed with a pencil and a blank piece of paper I channelled my inner artist and it worked - that Art GCSE paid off!

WELCOME TO THE 2022/23

My logo took a while to design; I had the concept, I had the colours, I had vague snippets of images in my head, but no matter what my fabulous team of helpers came up with, it wasn’t quite right.

Me aged nine: cute, well-behaved (depending on who you ask!) but also a people-pleaser so climbing a tree for conkers for my friends was a given. Breaking the branch wasn’t part of the plan, being the only one caught red-handed or, rather, with the branch in hand was a total schoolgirl error. My punishment was to write an essay on ‘why we should be kind to trees’. It stuck and since then I’ve tried to do what I can, when I can, from washable nappies to washing at 30, from period pants to bamboo loo roll and now travelling by electric car. If we all make a change, we can make a difference.

I’m a survivor so when it came to choosing the national charity for the year ahead, it was easy. I simply wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for a listening volunteer who answered my call 26 years ago. Please help me spread the word that Samaritans are available 24/7 for anyone who needs to talk on 116 123, check out pages 14 and 15 for more information. I’ve also set a challenge for all of us to be a little more eco this year.

Round Table family walk from HQ in Birmingham to the Ukraine embassy:sore feet and all!

There is so much more… In March 2022, following the awful news of the breakout of war in Ukraine, my husband Ash (who is in Round Table) and I decided that we needed to do something to help. On the Sunday we came up with the crazy idea of walking from Birmingham to London – and by Thursday we were actually doing it! With just the two of us, that would have been impossible. But it wasn't just the two of us, it was hundreds of people from the Round Table Family coming out to support us. It ranged from the incredible Fiona driving the car, to the wonderful Stacey who rubbed my feet when I was at my worst and the vast numbers of people who came out to see us as we Seeingwalked.the Round Table Family come together to make the impossible, possible, was the most inspiring thing I have ever seen. Together we raised 20,000 Euros, contributing to the millions raised by Round Tables and Circles internationally.

7 about joining Ladies Circle two years ago. I didn't know if an all-female group could work for me, especially as a woman in a senior role who has struggled with inequality at work. I was probably guilty of having preconceived ideas about what it would involve... but wow was I proven wrong! It took me just one Zoom meeting (damned covid!) to realise how wonderful it felt to be welcomed by a group of happy, funny and kind women. Within weeks, I was so happy to have joined. I have a group of friends that I can turn to for absolutely anything; who come for coffee during my lunch breaks, go for dinner on the weekends, join me at the gym (or spa) in the evenings, and bring their partners on holiday with me and my husband. I've never been so welcomed into a community before and it's been amazing to feel at home with a wonderful group of people. Until recently, I thought that I was experiencing all that Ladies Circle had to offer, especially with my awesome crew at Long Eaton, but I was wrong (that's a second time!).

I have been completely blown away by the recognition and support from everyone within Ladies Circle. I was humbled, grateful and proud to be given the Circler of the Year title after winning the Anthony Nolan Award. To win both the Side by Side award and the International Make a Difference Award alongside this was a true honour and something I never thought possible. I said it at AGM and I truly meant it; these awards are shared with every Circler who watched online, donated money, sent messages of support, raised money by creating beautiful things, walked with us, brought us food (especially jammy dodgers!), rubbed our feet and drove alongside us. None of it would have been possible without all of you, and I just hope that you’re ready to support the next crazy adventure! Since joining Circle, what I now know is that if you want to achieve something, there are hundreds of people who are just waiting to support you, cheer for you and make it happen. The power of that is incredible.

Where did it all begin?

85th Celebrations

Across the UK and no doubt around the world too, the name Louis Marchesi is revered within Round Table. He was the man who, more than 90 years ago, was inspired by a speech by the then Prince of Wales in post-Great War Britain and decided to create a club specifically aimed at YOUNG men in our society, calling upon them to make a difference to their communities. Less than 10 years later, the wives and long-standing girlfriends (the word ‘partner’ back then was reserved solely for business partners) of those early Tablers decided it was time for them to have some fun too. And so, in 1932, in Bournemouth, a group of women met and formed the first ever Ladies Circle who helped to organise the Round Table Conference. In 1936 eight Circles had come to fruition with the addition of Manchester, Hastings, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Wolverhampton, Doncaster and Southampton, and the decision was taken to form a national organisation. After the war, the expansion carried on into Wales with Cardiff in 1955, Scotland with Dumfries in 1956, and Ireland’s first Circle, Enniskillen, in 1959. 1959 saw the formation of Ladies Circle International by founder countries GB&I, Sweden and Denmark. We owe a lot to the women of 1932 and founder President Win Hussey and today having adapted to modern ways (in 1993 the rules changed and Circle became open to all women from 18-45 instead of solely wives of Round Tablers) we still share those original values and beliefs of fun and community, support and making a Thedifference.worldwas such a different place and yet, those values of yesteryear are as true and fundamental as they are today.

Time to celebrate AT LONG LAST!

In February 2022, Ladies Circlers past and present from across the world came together to celebrate our delayed 85th birthday. The sun shone on Scarborough making it the perfect weather for a bit of time by the seaside and catching up with old Thefriends.historic Scarborough Spa venue, site of past National Conferences, was decorated to fit with our seaside location. Tables were named after ice cream flavours with matching handmade centrepieces and LC 85 seaside rock scattered everywhere. Everyone attending received a hand fan featuring the stunning 85th anniversary logo. We can’t wait to see them on tour with you all! Throughout the evening, the event was ably managed by our MC and member of the Round Table Family, Mark Boersma, including announcing our raffle which raised more than £2,000 for President Michelle’s charity, Rape Crisis. Tracey Picken, NATC President, was invited to light the friendship candle and there were also speeches from LCI President Anna Elmqvist and NALC President Michelle Chapman. All the while, a slideshow of images from past events provided a talking point, including some of past anniversary celebrations. Following an excellent dinner, some guests hit the casino tables for a spot of gambling (just for fun!), some jumped into the photo booth with giant ice creams and seagulls, while others stayed on the dance floor for the epic New York Brass Band who kept us dancing till the night was done. Overall a fantastic night was had by all! Can’t wait to do it all again in four years for the 90th!

“How are you doing?”, “How’s your day been?”, “Are you ok?” These are standard questions when greeting family, friends, work colleagues in fact, almost everyone we meet. And our replies? Well, they are pretty standard too. “Good, you?”, “Fine thanks!”, “Ok”. We ask and answer these questions automatically, but the reality is no-one can be 100% happy or fine 100% of the time. However, being able to recognise a tough day for exactly what it is and to have someone to talk it over with, is key. “One bad day doesn’t make a bad life” Every 90 minutes in the UK or Ireland someone takes their own life. It was a great night and reminded us all just how “out of this world” our Circle truly is - and how proud we are to be a part of it! We wanted to change our name because we thought that it was quite a mouthful to say before and it was causing a little confusion with other groups. The majority of our members are from outside of Chelmsford and in all honesty we have always just called ourselves "Tindal"!

bq Circle News

Tindal Ladies Circle officially launched!

The challenge was throughout April to walk as many kilometres as possible. There were seven of us taking part and we all set our own target for walking and raising money but also joined up as a team. I am very proud to say we raised £759 in total (we were the number team!) and walked 566.61km. We walked at least once or twice a week in small groups (whoever was available) and two members withamanagedevenwalktheir boys while holidaying in(separately!)Wales.

We celebrated our official name change from "Chelmsford Tindal Ladies Circle" to simply "Tindal Ladies Circle" in a very Circle way. We threw a space-themed "Re-launch" party! Even though we're not brand new, we wanted to celebrate the start of our newest chapter as we launch into our fresh start. We were surrounded by friends, enjoyed silly games which were lots of fun, and managed to raise more than £310 for Cruse Bereavement

From Bucks Fizz to Abba, Union Jacks to Tricolores, everyone looked fantastic.

Wow, what can I say?! I became Hinckley Ladies Circle Chair officially on May 12th and what a busy first month it was! I took over as chair from the wonderful Gemma at our ‘handover’ - a wonderful evening with our members and we were also joined by very own Hinckley member Stacey as Past Area 20 Chair along with Louise, the new incoming Area 20 chair. On Monday 23 May some of our ladies got together and I invited Ella from Loughborough Dogs Trust down to Hinckley to talk about the wonderful work the charity does and where the donations go to within the UK and OnIreland.June 2, we helped and supported our men and families in Hinckley Round Table who worked in conjunction with Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to present Proms in the Park. It was an evening full of entertainment, lovely weather and fantastic music. We helped raise more than £1850 which will distributedbe among local worthy causes.

It was very educational and a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with our Round Table who only rechartered in 2019. Obviously with Covid, we have not been able to see them.

While we were there, they got called out to an emergency, so we got to see the White Watch team in action as they prepared to leave the station in the fire

br Harleston Ladies Circle

We actively volunteered with the local jubilee celebrations as well as running our own bingo stall. Our immediate past chair Siobhan Keeble, current chair Caitlin Roper and vice-chair Vicki Hirst ensured there were plenty of games available for people to play on our giant bingo board, with sweet treats as prizes - all while getting the word out in our town about our newly established Circle.

In May, Clacton Ladies Circle members enjoyed a tour of their local fire station.

Hinckley Ladies Circle

Seeing the fire station was great, they do so much more than put out fires.

The tour was so informative - please ask your local station if they can accommodate a tour for your Circle.

Loughborough Ladies Circle

Loughborough Ladies Circle celebrated the Jubilee #SideBySide with Charnwood Tangent with a fantastic garden party and makeyour-own-crown competition. Luckily the weather was kind to us and we had fantastic food, plenty of fizz, and enjoyed looking through memories of past Jubilees. A wonderful evening!

AGORA CLUB UK Saturday 11th June was a glorious day as we held our National AGM in Southend, in person for the first time in 3 years! We were able to say thank you to our Board for 2021-22 who worked hard to bring back some momentum after the all the restrictions and zoom meetings of the previous year. This year we welcome to the Board, Lisa McArdle as Vice President, Jo Whatley assisting as vice Vice President, Victoria Lawrence as Secretary, our Treasurer remains as Debbie Sayer and we also have Membership officer Sandra OverSmith.the year ahead Brenda Davey (IPP) and Lisa and Jo will share the Presidential duties and we wish them all an enjoyable and successful year ahead especially as we look forward to the prospect of chartering our next Agora club in the Autumn. #IAmCircle

I must thank Littleborough & District LC for sharing a taxi - helping me out when google maps took me to the OLD rep theatre not the new one!! I am looking forward to working with Fiona, Jim and Matt over the year and on 12th July at the Great Yorkshire Show, Harrogate, we are joining together to try and break a World Record - attempting to make the most cups of tea by a group of 12 in one hour. I chose this challenge because my charity, Re-engage, tries to alleviate loneliness in old age by encouraging social contact usually via tea parties. Loneliness is a debilitating feeling and has been recognised as a contributing factor for antisocial behaviour to altered brain function, depression through to suicide, yet it can be combated by care and Ifriendship.lookforward to meeting you over the year at various events, especially the Craft weekend and Christmas Ball-Bull. I have to start my article for Ladies Circle by thanking my predecessor, Paul Thompson. His tenure as President was filled with positive messaging surrounding our communities and the role we play within them.

Jim Conway - 41 Club National President 2022-23 #GetInvolved

Yours in continued Tabling and Circling.

I am looking forward to supporting Fiona and hope that as many Circlers as possible will come out in force to support our side-by-side challenges over the next year. The 41 Club challenge is to set the world record for visiting every Scottish Football League stadium between 11 and 13 October 2022 in the quickest time. First we have the Tangent one of serving more than 1,884 cups of tea in one hour by a 12-person team. If you want to be part of either world record attempt, then get in touch, as your support will mean so much. It is not just about raising funds for our charities but raising awareness through media interventions and publicise the crazy things that we do to make the Round Table Family the clubs of choice for everyone. I am looking forward to meeting you all on my travels.

RTBI is without doubt in a strong place administratively and much of this started with Paul four years ago. Paul also had a great working relationship with Michelle, and I certainly hope to build on this foundation with Fiona this year. Paul was ably supported by Chris Marshall and Steve Eccles and I am very lucky to have these fine Tablers on the board for another 12 months. The challenge now is to build on these strong foundations and I have all the confidence that the board of 2022/23 will deliver!

Table Talk

Greetings from 41 Club I am absolutely delighted to be working alongside Fiona Bull this year. Not only are we serving as Presidents together, but we have been great friends for years. The work already being undertaken, where we are creating a museum, meeting areas as well as storage space at Marchesi House is a start towards better understanding, more cooperation and more sideby-side events. We are dedicated to pushing the Round Table Family forward and will be working on a Memorandum of Understanding as well as an umbrella Association, which will ensure close cooperation in the future.

We are proud to be ongoing supporters of BBC Children in Need and are looking forward to working with them over the year ahead. Last year we raised £68,071.10 at Carfest with the Round Table Family, and we will be back again this year, hoping to beat that record with the amazing volunteers we have got. So watch this space! We also raised £1,431 via our JustGiving page for all the fun events that took place over appeal week. We hope you enjoyed it, and we hope to bring you more of the same this year. How can you #GetInvolved?
