Algunos dicen que el emblema más impactante de Ibiza es el islote de Es Vedrà. Otros creen que lo más conocido es la silueta de Dalt Vila y sus murallas, declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Para muchos, lo que más identifica a la isla en el mundo son las discotecas y sus dj’s. Todos tienen parte de razón, pero si hubiera que elegir un solo estandarte de la Ibiza deseada, un lugar idílico que represente a esta islita como referente de paz, color y felicidad en el imaginario planetario, ése sería el mercadillo de Las Dalias.

uando el agricultor y carpintero Joan Marí abrió en 1954 un bar de carretera en las afueras de Sant Carles, no podía imaginar que con el paso del tiempo se convertiría en un verdadero símbolo de toda la isla de Ibiza. El bar dio paso a un salón de baile y a una barbacoa. El negocio fue prosperando en aquellos difíciles años en los que el turismo europeo empezaba a descubrir una Ibiza remota a la que pronto llegarían los primeros hippies.

Las Dalias ofreció desde el principio esa libertad, ese color y ese calor que no existía en la España gris peninsular. Su propuesta optimista siempre ha constituido su estilo de vida. 31

años después de la apertura del bar, el hijo del fundador, Juanito, tuvo una iniciativa singular: dar cobijo a cinco puestos de artesanía en el jardín.

Un frío pero hermoso día de San Valentín de 1985 se ponía en marcha un mercadillo que estaba llamado a convertirse en uno de los atractivos más poderosos de la isla.

En la actualidad, 25 años después, cuenta con más de 150 paradas. Es un oasis ineludible de Ibiza, un emblema de la cultura y el carácter autóctonos y un lugar de visita obligada para residentes y turistas de todo el mundo.

Los sábados de agosto puede llegar a recibir más de 20.000 visitantes. Únicamente todas las discotecas de la isla juntas y a tope tienen la capacidad de atraer a tantas personas en un

día. Para celebrar estos 25 primeros años del mercadillo, Las Dalias puso una pica en Madrid y ahora lanza la primera edición de su propia revista. Son tantas las experiencias, las emociones, los relatos, los personajes, los días y las noches inolvidables que hemos vivido que consideramos necesario recopilarlas en una publicación y compartirlas contigo. Las Dalias Ibiza Magazine nace también con vocación de futuro para convertirse en la primera referencia editorial de la Ibiza imaginativa, colorista, el norte artístico, místico, el último bastión irreductible de una isla que fue y sigue siendo internacionalmente conocida por sus artesanos y su mestizaje de culturas y nacionalidades que conviven en paz y armonía. •

Some say the most striking emblem of Ibiza is the small island of Es Vedrà. Others believe the best-known emblem is the silhouette of Dalt Vila and its walls, which have been declared a World Heritage Site. For many people, the thing people most associate with the island is nightclubs and DJs. They are all right in some way, but if only one standard bearer had to be chosen to represent the Ibiza we all love, one idyllic place on the small island to represent tranquillity, colour and happiness in people’s minds, it would be Las Dalias Hippy Market.

hen the farmer and carpenter Joan Marí opened a road bar on the outskirts of Sant Carles in 1954, he could not have imagined that what he started would eventually become a veritable symbol of the entire island. The bar paved the way for the dance hall and the barbecue. Business prospered, even in those difficult years in which European tourism was just discovering the remote island of Ibiza, upon which the first hippies would soon embark.

From the very beginning, Las Dalias offered a freedom, colour and warmth that was nowhere to be found on the dull Spanish mainland. Ibiza’s lifestyle has always been charactersed by its

optimistic offer. Thirty-one years after the bar opened, Juanito, the son of the founder, had a unique idea: to allow five craft stalls to be set up in the garden. On a beautiful but cold Valentine’s Day in 1985, a street market was set up that was destined to become one of the island’s most powerful attractions. Today, twenty-five years after the market was set up, there are more than 150 stalls. The market has become a veritable oasis, an emblem of the island’s culture and character and a must-see attraction for Ibiza’s residents and visitors from around the world. On a Saturday in August there can be more than 20,000 visitors. The only other thing on the island that can attract such a crowd are the clubs, but only if you count the total number of people

in all the clubs when they are packed full. To celebrate 25 years of the hippy market, Las Dalias has already set up shop in Madrid for three days in May, and now it is launching the first edition of its magazine. We’ve had so many unforgettable experiences, emotions, stories, characters and unforgettable days and nights that we just had to compile them in a publication and share them with you. Las Dalias Ibiza Magazine is also looking towards the future, hoping to become the most important publication about the imaginative, colouristic Ibiza and its artistic, mystical north, the last unyielding bastion of an island that was, and is, known around the world for its craft traders and its blend of cultures and nationalities living in peace and harmony. •

Febrer de 1985 va sorprendre a tots els eivissencs amb una impressionant nevada.

Però aquest mateix mes va tenir lloc un altre fet que també ha acabat guanyantse un merescut lloc en la relació d’efemèrides illenques.

Em refereix al naixement del mercat de Las Dalias, fruit de la iniciativa de´n Joan Marí, Juanito, en col·laboració amb la galerista Helga WatsonTodd. L’èxit d’aquesta iniciativa va superar totes les expectatives, fins el punt d’acabar esdevenint un dels mercats més importants del món en la seua categoria. El seu esperit i el seu caràcter propi, així com l’encert en la seua gestió, han fet possible que el mercat de Las Dalias compleixi els seus 25 anys d’existència en un estat de forma envejable, disposat a continuar essent un referent turístic de primer nivell. La meua sincera enhorabona a totes les persones que ho han fet possible.

Las Dalias és un exemple d’aquells negocis familiars eivissencs que han sabut adaptar-se al pas del temps i créixer sense perdre la seva autenticitat. El mercadet que enguany compleix vint-i-cinc anys conserva l’esperit de convivència i respecte de la nostra gent cap als hippies que arribaren a Eivissa els anys 60 i que trobaren a Sant Carles el seu paradís particular. Amb la mirada posada en el futur, desig que la mateixa filosofia que ha convertit aquest espai en un indret conegut internacionalment serveixi també per a la seua consolidació i conservació. L’originalitat d’aquest espai, en el qual cohabiten modernitat i tradició, forma part de la singularitat del municipi de Santa Eulària des Riu, una terra plena de racons únics i emblemàtics que mereix la pena recórrer i conèixer en tota la seva essència.

Me refiero al nacimiento del mercadillo de Las Dalias, fruto de la iniciativa de Joan Marí, Juanito, en colaboración con la galerista Helga Watson-Todd. El éxito de aquella iniciativa superó todas las expectativas, hasta el punto de que ya se ha convertido en uno de los mercados más importantes del mundo en su categoría. Su espíritu y su idiosincrasia, así como una acertada gestión, han hecho posible que el mercadillo de Las Dalias cumpla 25 años de existencia en un estado de forma envidiable, dispuesto a continuar siendo un referente turístico de primer orden. Mi más sincera enhorabuena a todas las personas que lo han hecho posible.

CONVIVENCIA Y RESPETO. Las Dalias es un ejemplo de esos negocios familiares ibicencos que han sabido adaptarse al paso del tiempo y crecer sin perder su autenticidad. El mercadillo que ahora cumple 25 años conserva el espíritu de convivencia y respeto de nuestra gente hacia los hippies que llegaron a Ibiza en los años 60 y que encontraron en Sant Carles su paraíso particular. Con la mirada puesta en el futuro, deseo que la misma filosofía que ha convertido este espacio en un lugar conocido internacionalmente sirva también para su consolidación y conservación. La originalidad de Las Dalias, donde conviven modernidad y tradición, forma parte de la singularidad del municipio de Santa Eulària des Riu, una tierra llena de rincones únicos y emblemáticos que merece la pena recorrer y conocer en toda su esencia.

A LEADING TOURIST DESTINATION. In February 1985, heavy snowfall surprised everyone on Ibiza. But the same month saw another of the island’s historic events: the birth of Las Dalias Hippy Market, conceived by Juan Marí “Juanito” in collaboration with the art gallery director Helga Watson-Todd. The success of the event surpassed all expectations, and the market is now one of the largest of its kind in the world. The spirit and idiosyncrasy of the market, as well as good management, have enabled Las Dalias Hippy Market to reach its 25th anniversary in an enviable state of health, and hopes to continue being a leading tourist attraction. I would like to express my most heartfelt congratulations to all those who have made this possible.

COEXISTENCE AND RESPECT. Las Dalias is an example of one of the many family businesses on Ibiza that have been able to move with the times without losing their authenticity. This 25-year-old market has preserved the spirit of coexistence and respect of our people towards the hippies that came to the island in the sixties and discovered their unique form of paradise in Sant Carles.

Looking towards the future, I hope that the same philosophy that made this place known around the world will also serve to consolidate and preserve it. The originality of Las Dalias, in which modernity and traditions coexist, is part of the unique nature of Santa Eulària des Riu, a town full of unique, emblematic corners worth discovering in all their essence.

Erwin Bechtold

UnAnvecino ilustre, un vecino mas illustrious resident, but just another resident El reconocido pintor Erwin Bechtold (Colonia, Alemania, 1925) reside de manera permanente en Ibiza desde 1958. Durante los primeros años en la isla, se estableció en la finca de Can Yern, en Sant Llorenç, con su mujer, Christina. Por entonces no había luz eléctrica en el campo ibicenco, apenas circulaban coches y los amigos que se querían acercar a la casa de los Bechtold tenían que coger el taxi de Antonio, el único chófer de la isla ‘English spoken’. Como estaban de alquiler, el artista y su esposa buscaban una propiedad donde establecerse y un amigo barcelonés, Jaime Sanz, les habló de una pequeña finca en Sant Carles, muy cerca de Las Dalias: Can Cardona. Christina todavía recuerda hoy a la perfección cómo fue su llegada al pueblo: “Alquilamos una moto Ossa y nos fuimos hacia allí por esas carreteras llenas de baches. Paramos en Las Dalias y allí preguntamos por la casa. La dueña nos acompañó y nos abrió la finca con una llave enorme que todavía conservamos”. La finca era poco más que una ruina pero los Bechtold pusieron todo su empeño en convertirla en su hogar. Pocos años después, gracias a la reforma del artista, la vivienda aparecía en las más prestigiosas revistas de arquitectura e interiorismo de España y Europa, aplaudida como un ejemplo de integración entre la arquitectura tradicional ibicenca y las líneas innovadoras que impuso Bechtold. El artista alemán había encontrado en Sant Carles su refugio. Por entonces no tenían mucho dinero y, para afrontar el pago de los tres plazos de la casa, el pintor tuvo que dedicarse a trabajos ‘alimenticios’ como el diseño de las cubiertas de los libros de Ediciones Destino o el interiorismo de varias librerías y tiendas en Barcelona. Estos trabajos le han reportado recientemente la medalla FAD del Fomento de las Artes y el Diseño a toda su carrera. Can Cardona ha puesto a Sant Carles en el mapa de muchos intelectuales, poetas, editores, pintores, escultores… En definitiva, amigos de los Bechtold, que han sido invitados a disfrutar de este paraje y su excepcional compañía.

The renowned painter Erwin Bechtold (Cologne, Germany, 1925) has had his permanent residence on Ibiza since 1958. He spent his first few years on the island living in the estate of Can Yern, in Sant Llorenç, with his wife Christina. At that time, there was no electricity in rural Ibiza, and hardly any cars. Anyone who wanted to go to Bechtold’s house had to get a taxi ride from Antonio, the only driver on the island who could speak English. Because they were renting, the artist and his wife were looking for a property to move into. A friend from Barcelona, Jaime Sanz, told them about a small villa called Can Cardona in Sant Carles, very close to Las Dalias. Christina can still remember perfectly when she moved to the town: “We hired an Ossa motorbike and made our way along the potholed roads to the town.

We stopped at Las Dalias and asked the way to the house. The landlady came with us and opened the house with a huge key that we still have today.” The villa was little more than ruins, but the Bechtolds put all their effort into making it a home. Thanks to the artist’s reforms, just a few years later the property appeared in the most prestigious architecture and interior design magazines in Spain and Europe, lauded as an example of integration between traditional Ibizan architecture and the innovations introduced by Bechtold.

The German artist had found his refuge in Sant Carles. At the time they had little money, so to pay the three instalments on the house the painter had to do jobs that put food on the table, such as designing the covers for the books published by Ediciones Destino and working on the interiors of various bookshops and other shops in Barcelona. For this work he recently received the FAD medal for the promotion of art and design. Can Cardona put Sant Carles on the map of many intellectuals, poets, publishers, painters, sculptors and other friends of the Bechtolds that were invited to enjoy this spot and their excellent company.

Erwin Bechtold nace en Colonia el 12 de abril de 1925. Maestro impresor con sólo 25 años, pronto se traslada a París para seguir su vocación por la pintura y trabajar con Fernand Lèger. De allí viaja a Barcelona. En 1958 se instala definitivamente en Sant Carles y participa en la creación del influyente Grupo Ibiza 59. Ha recibido prestigiosos premios –como la reciente medalla FAD– por su obra pictórica y por sus innovadores trabajos como arquitecto, interiorista y diseñador gráfico. Su obra ha sido expuesta en museos y galerías como el Museum Scholss Morsbroich, la Fundación Joan Miró, el Museum am Ostwall am Ostwall o Es Baluart.

Paseando entre sus puestos he visto a Mick Jagger o Carlos Baute, sonrientes y dispuestos a entablar conversación con artesanos y visitantes. Son experiencias reales en un ambiente que transmite vibraciones positivas.

Aquí he comprado algunos de los objetos que más estimo: desde preciosos vestidos a libros o piezas de artesanos que son verdaderas joyas. Me encanta tomar un zumo de fruta recién exprimida, cenar en verano en su magnífico jardín y comprobar la fecundidad de los artistas de la isla. Siempre busco un hueco en Navidad para ir a comprar un regalo especial.

Quienes frecuentamos el mercadillo, sabemos que marca tendencia: diseños y propuestas originales que triunfan en Ibiza, después llegan a las grandes ciudades. Las Dalias es un espacio auténtico y libre donde se encuentra el espíritu de Ibiza. Felicidades a todos los que hacen posible que este mercadillo sea un fenómeno universal.

Walking among the stalls I’ve seen Mick Jagger and Carlos Baute, both smiling and happy to talk with the traders and visitors. These are real experiences in an atmosphere that gives off positive vibes. Here I have bought some of the objects I love the most, from beautiful clothes to books and crafts that are veritable jewels. I adore drinking freshly squeezed fruit juice, eating dinner on summer evenings in the beautiful garden and testing the fertility of the island’s artists. I always try and find

SIEMPRE ENCUENTRO ALGo PRECIOSO I ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL Las Dalias es un lugar fascinante, un mundo que te transporta a la Ibiza hippy y por unas horas te invita a olvidar la dictadura del reloj y a sumergirte en una fusión de colores, olores, culturas... Poco a poco se ha convertido en uno de los símbolos de la isla. Cada verano es visita obligada. Cuando vienen mis amigas a Ibiza, siempre descubrimos algún ‘tesorito’, alguno de esos detalles preciosos que sólo puedes encontrar aquí.

Las Dalias is a fascinating place, a world that transports you to the hippy Ibiza and for a few hours invites you to forget about the constraint of time and immerse yourself in a sea of colours, fragrances, cultures… The market has gradually become one of the symbols of the island. Visiting the market is something I just have to do every summer. When my friends come to Ibiza we always manage to discover a “little treasure”, one of those beautiful details that you can only find at Las Dalias.

I have wonderful memories of Las Dalias. I remember as a teenager having one of my first nights out for a meal. Back then it was just a restaurant, but for me it became a sanctuary.

Despite all the changes, it has preserved its essence to this day. It remains a reminder of the Ibiza of the sixties and preserves that spirit of complete freedom.

una gran fuente de inspiración A CONSIDERABLE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION Hace muchos años, descubrí un lugar mágico en Ibiza llamado ¨Las Dalias¨. Fue en el verano de 1987, cuando solia tocar con un trio de blues rock casi todas las noches allí. Desde el primer momento me sorprendió la atmósfera bohemia y la energía tan especial que transmitía. Me dejé seducir por su ambiente rodeado de artistas, músicos y gente de todas partes del mundo. Noche tras noche tocábamos, improvisábamos y vivimos experiencias inolvidables. Las Dalias e Ibiza se convirtieron en una gran fuente de inspiración. Después de tanto tiempo y tras recorrer el mundo con Vargas Blues Band, hay un lugar al que siempre me gusta volver, un lugar en el que cada noche puedes descubrir algo nuevo, visitar su mercadillo hippy o encontrar buenos amigos como Juanito. Ese lugar es Las Dalias.

Many years ago I discovered a magical place on Ibiza called Las Dalias. It was back in the summer of 1987, when I would play with a blues rock trio almost every night. I was immediately amazed by the bohemian atmosphere and uniquely special energy of the place. I was captivated by the atmosphere brought about by the blend of artists, musicians and people from around the world.

Night after night we would play, improvise and experience some unforgettable times.

Las Dalias and Ibiza became a great source of inspiration. After so many years, and having toured the world with the Vargas Blues Band, there is a place I always like to go back to, a place where every night you can discover something new, visit their hippy market or find good friends like Juanito. That place is Las Dalias.

Conocí este lugar tan especial en los años 70 y, desde entonces, tanto Juanito como su padre han demostrado una capacidad emprendedora y de innovación innata. Han ofrecido, además, una oportunidad a muchos jóvenes creadores para expresar y mostrar su arte. Lo que hace que Ibiza sea lo que es, se puede ver en Las Dalias: ese don para estar abiertos a las novedades sin dejar de ser ellos mismos.

siempre llevo a mis invitados I ALWAYS TAKE MY GUESTS Siempre voy a Las Dalias. Me gusta mucho, especialmente desde que compré el segundo piso en Santa Eulalia, cuando estaba con Carlos Zayas. El primero se quedó para mi hijo y los invitados y el segundo para él y para mí. Llevar a los invitados a Las Dalias era una obligación que nos gustaba mucho a los dos y a ellos. Era la época en la que no había paparazzi y Ángela Molina y yo podíamos ir a bañarnos desnudas a la playa de Aguas Blancas.

I always go to Las Dalias. I love the place, especially since I bought a second apartment in Santa Eulària, when I was with Carlos Zayas. I let my son and the guests use the first apartment, and Carlos and I used the second one. Taking our guests to Las Dalias was something we just _had_ to do, and something both we and our guests enjoyed so much. It was back in the time when there were no paparazzi, and Ángela Molina and I could bathe naked at the beach at Aguas Blancas.

I discovered this special place in the seventies, and since then both Juanito and his father have shown an innate capacity for entrepreneurship and innovation. They have also provided many young artists with the opportunity to express and exhibit their art. At Las Dalias, you can see what makes Ibiza what is: the Ibizans’ ability to be open to innovation without betraying themselves.

I came to Ibiza in the 70s and have known Las Dalias since then. I have taken famous people like Elle Macpherson and Naomi Campbell and many others. On one occasion, the Franco-German TV channel ARTE asked me to take part in a programme about Ibiza so I took them to Las Dalias. There I managed to get a designer from the company Hermés to interview Darío Bombé, a craft trader who made leather bags and rucksacks.

I love Las Dalias, which has so many qualities I could highlight, including the fantastic atmosphere, the scores of stalls and onlookers visiting the market, and the wide variety of clothes, bags, necklaces and many other items for sale, all of which are very original. I say to anyone visiting Ibiza, make sure you don’t miss Las Dalias, it’s really worth the visit. My sincerest congratulations.

Me encanta Las Dalias y podría destacar muchas de sus cualidades, entre ellas su ambiente, que es fantástico, con la multitud de puestos y curiosos que se dan cita en el mercadillo y la gran variedad de ropa, bolsos, collares y otras muchas cosas que pueden comprarse. Las Dalias is the last stronghold of the wonders of the hippy Ibiza and of the colour faded by the banalities of this ever-changing world. For me, going to Las Dalias is like going on a journey to the Ibiza of dreams, that magical island we used to enjoy and that today we yearn for so much and affectionately look back on as we wander through the nooks and crannies of one of the most emblematic and cherished markets ever to have existed on Ibiza. I hope that this symbol of freedom and expression will survive the passage of time.

mezcla de culturas BLEND OF CULTURES Una de las primeras cosas que más me gustó cuando llegué a Ibiza, siendo muy joven, fue Las Dalias y su mercadillo. Es muy cosmopolita y a la vez muy cercano. Los aromas orientales confieren al lugar un atractivo muy especial. Ahora voy menos pero cuando llega algún familiar o amigos una de mis primeras recomendaciones es que visiten Las Dalias como un punto en el que se mezclan las culturas a través de sus manifestaciones más lúdicas.

One of the first things I liked the most when I came to Ibiza at a very young age was Las Dalias and the market. It’s so cosmopolitan, yet it feels so homely. The Oriental aromas give the place a very special appeal. I don’t go as often nowadays, but whenever someone from my family or a friend comes over, one of the first things I recommend is to visit Las Dalias, and I tell them how cultures blend together through the ludic activities that take place.

Hay una sensación, especialmente feliz y emocionante, que parece pertenecer a la primavera, al olor del verano que se acerca. Es la sensación que vive en canciones como el “San Francisco” de Scott Mc Kenzie, en “Let the sunshine in” o en muchas de las canciones de los Byrds. Las escasas ocasiones en que he tenido la sensación de que esa banda sonora (¡al fin!) corresponde con la película que estás viviendo es visitando el mercadillo de Las Dalias, especialmente antes de que comience el verano, cuando aún no han llegado muchos turistas y puedes encontrar sin demasiada dificultad el color, la efervescencia y la autenticidad que echabas tanto de menos pero que, como si fuese la versión hippy de la aldea de Astérix, resiste al tiempo y a las invasiones. Lo decía Joni Mitchell: “We are stardust, we are golden. And we got to get ourselves back to the garden”.

There is a particularly joyful and exciting sensation that seems to belong to the spring and to the fragrance of the approaching arrival of summer. It is the sensation that is expressed in songs such as “San Francisco” by Scott McKenzie, “Let the Sunshine in” and many of the songs by The Byrds. One of the few occasions I feel that this soundtrack (finally!) matches the film in which I’m living is when I go to Las Dalias Hippy Market, especially before the start of summer, when there are still not many tourists and it’s easy to find the colour, effervescence and authenticity that you miss so much but that, as if it were a hippy version of Asterix’s village, holds out against time and invasions. Joni Mitchell put it this way: “We are stardust, we are golden. And we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden”.

na isla es y ha sido siempre para la imaginación humana una expectativa: algo parecido a un sueño o una promesa de juventud. Una isla como Ibiza posee, además, la virtud de ser y de haber sido, al menos desde los años 50 del pasado siglo, una posibilidad muy accesible, una experiencia al alcance de la mano. Ibiza viene siendo, por tanto, desde hace ya unas cuantas décadas, y a ello debe su fama universal, algo así como la isla posible, el cumplimiento de un sueño o de una promesa. Nos equivocaríamos, sin embargo, si pensáramos que su celebridad está ligada únicamente a su accesibilidad, desarrollada al máximo por la industria del turismo de masas. Lo que ha convertido a Ibiza en una expectativa insular permanente ha sido sobre todo el hecho de que, a pesar de los grandes cambios y del peso de su fama, ha sabido comportarse como se espera de una isla. ¿Y qué comportamiento es éste? De una isla se esperan muchas cosas. En el imaginario continental, una isla es la expresión más pura de la soledad y de la belleza, y es también un símbolo del mundo interior más perfecto posible. Es el lugar por excelencia, además, para dar cumplimiento a los deseos prohibidos, aunque se olvide con frecuencia que, no por casualidad, una isla ha sido tradicionalmente también un lugar de condena y destierro: no hay paraíso sin sombra del infierno. De una isla se espera todo aquello que venga a salvar al individuo de sus propias carencias.

Todas las islas guardan un tesoro y éste promete a su buscador la vida eterna, aunque esta experiencia no dure más que un fin de semana, un verano o un par de años.

Se espera una luz, un mar y un cielo diferentes, porque una isla es siempre un acontecimiento de la naturaleza extraordinario, pero se espera algo más: una actitud vital comprometida con un tiempo sin tiempo, con la felicidad. De una isla se espera, en definitiva, un estilo de vida que, como ya vio el escritor Albert Camus durante su corta estancia en Ibiza en 1935, sólo puede estar asociado al deseo de vivir una vida más auténtica. Bien, todo esto es lo que esperan de una isla aquellos que no son isleños, por supuesto, porque éstos viven su insularidad de una manera muy diferente.

Puede que la palabra autenticidad suene en nuestros días a puro espejismo. De ella sólo podemos decir que, signifique lo que signifique, ha sido buscada en Ibiza. No nos concierne juzgar en qué medida ha sido encontrada, con cuánta intensidad.

Tras ella llegaron, en primer lugar, los intelectuales y artistas europeos de los años 30: el dadaísta Raoul Hausmann, el filósofo Walter Benjamin, el pintor Esteban Vicente, los poetas Rafael Alberti y Jacques Prévert, la escritora María Teresa León, las fotógrafas Gisèle Freund y Florence Henri, el arquitecto Josep Lluís Sert...

Todos dijeron haberla encontrado -con sus luces y sus sombras- y todos contribuyeron a su manera a la idealización de Ibiza como espacio posible para una nueva y moderna utopía. Tras la palabra

autenticidad llegaron también, ya a partir de la segunda mitad del sigo XX, huyendo del tedio continental y de su rígida cultura, los pintores abstractos, los escritores beats, los hippies y los músicos de muy diversa condición. Algunos aún permanecen en su isla y entre todos lograron establecer una peculiar atmósfera que define a Ibiza, que la identifica como una isla que no se parece a ninguna otra. Pero nos equivocaríamos también si pensáramos que la construcción de la idea de Ibiza como mito de nuestro tiempo se debe exclusivamente a los artistas y a los movimientos contraculturales: se debe también en la misma proporción a miles de visitantes anónimos, casi siempre jóvenes, que lograron cumplir en la isla un sueño tan antiguo como el regreso a casa de Ulises: el reencuentro con una vida cuya aventura principal consiste sólo en erigirse heredero de un pequeño reino de luz y mar sereno. Se diría que el misterio actual de este reino no es otro que el de haber sabido permanecer en activo, seduciendo todavía, a pesar de haber mostrado síntomas muy claros de confusión y decadencia. Lo que ofrece una isla como Ibiza al imaginario continental, a los miles de jóvenes que llegan cada año de todas partes del mundo, ha cambiado con el tiempo, en ocasiones puede parecer incluso que se ha devaluado, pero en esencia podría decirse que continúa siendo lo mismo, aunque adquiera diferentes formas o nombres, recaiga más el acento en la música o en la playa, en la vida rural o en la diversión, en la soledad o en la multitud. “Para la mayoría de los que se enamoraron de Ibiza -escribió Miguel Siguán en 1983-, éste fue su secreto: creyeron que allí era posible conciliar lo más antiguo y lo más moderno, y a partir del contacto con unas formas de vida incontaminadas redescubrir las raíces de una existencia auténtica que respondiese a las necesidades del mundo contemporáneo.

Pero quizá sea inútil buscar una explicación racional a esa atracción y sea preferible admitir que se trata de un milagro, que es cierto que las Pitiusas son uno de los ejes psíquicos del mundo y que Ibiza estaba llamada a tener un destino singular”.

Libertad e independencia individual: tal vez sea éste el tesoro más importante que la isla ha ofrecido a sus buscadores

Desde este destino singular, Ibiza improvisa continuamente su pervivencia como mito, con las contradicciones propias de nuestro tiempo. Es lo que ha hecho siempre: improvisar, confiándose tal vez a su destino. Pero improvisar desde una idea de la libertad que ha sido y sigue siendo también la que se espera de una isla.

En 1932, un joven alemán llamado Thomas Schlichtkrull escribió en un artículo en Diario de Ibiza lo siguiente: “Todos los que vienen aquí hacen constar con unanimidad que se encuentran en un pueblo de extremo amor a su tierra natal y entre un pueblo de elevadas cualidades espirituales y cordiales. Cualquiera que ha estado aquí, y aunque sean solamente unos días, se despide dejando verdaderos amigos. No hay duda, en casi ningún sitio el visitante disfruta de tanta libertad, tanta independencia individual como en Ibiza”. Libertad e independencia individual: tal vez sea éste el tesoro más importante que la isla ha ofrecido a sus buscadores. Son palabras de 1932 que no se han dejado de repetir desde entonces, que todavía pueden escucharse hoy y a las que muy poco o nada importaría ahora intentar dar una explicación más o menos lógica. • Vicente Valero (Eivissa, 1963). slands are, and always have been, the subject of great anticipation in the human mind. They are like a dream or promise from one’s youth.

The island of Ibiza also has the virtue of having been an accessible island since at least the 1950s, an experience within one’s reach. For several decades Ibiza has built its fame upon being the island of possibilities, the fulfillment of a dream or a promise. We would be mistaken, however, if we thought that it was only famous because of its accessibility, which has been developed to the maximum by the mass tourism industry. If Ibiza remains an island of expectations it is because, despite the massive changes and its huge fame, it has behaved as one expects an island to behave. So how is an island expected to behave? Many things are expected of an island. In the continental mind, an island is the purest expression of solitude and a symbol of the most perfect interior world. It is also the ideal place to fulfil forbidden desires, though one often forgets that, by no accident, islands have traditionally been a place of punishment and exile: there is no heaven without the shadow of hell. From an island you expect everything that comes to save a person from his or her own shortcomings. All islands have a hidden treasure that promises eternal life to those who seek it, even though this experience lasts no longer than a weekend, a summer or a couple of years.

You expect a different light, a different sea and a different sky, because an island is always an extraordinary event of nature. But you expect something else: an attitude to life with a commitment to a timeless time, to happiness. In other words, from an island you expect a lifestyle that, as the writer Albert Camus saw during his brief stay on Ibiza in 1935, can only be associated with the desire to live a more authentic life. Non-islanders expect all these things from an island, since they live their island lives differently to the islanders themselves. The word “authenticity” might sound like nothing more than an illusion in this day and age. But whatever the word might mean, all we can say is that it has been sought after on Ibiza. We are not concerned with judging to what extent authenticity has been found.

The first to come in search of authenticity were European intellectuals and artists in the 1930s: the Dadaist Raoul Hausmann, the philosopher Walter Benjamin, the painter Esteban Vicente, the poets Rafael Alberti and Jacques Prévert, the writer María Teresa León, the photographers Gisèle Freund and Florence Henri, the architect Josep Lluís Sert, etc. They all said they had found authenticity, with its lights and shadows, and they all contributed in their own way to the idealisation of Ibiza as a space for a new, modern utopia. In the second half of the 20th century came the abstract painters, the Beat writers, the hippies and musicians of all kinds, fleeing from the tedium

of the mainland and its rigid culture in search of authenticity.

Some of them still reside on their island, and between them they have created a unique atmosphere that characterises Ibiza and identifies it as an island unlike any other. But we would also be mistaken if we thought that it was only the artists and counterculture movements that made Ibiza a legendary destination of our time. Ibiza was also shaped to the same extent by the thousands of anonymous, mainly young visitors who managed to fulfil a dream as ancient as the return home of Ulysses: the reunion with a life whose main adventure involves nothing more than becoming the heir of a small kingdom of light and tranquil sea. The current mystery of that kingdom is said to be no other than that of being able to remain active and to continue to seduce, despite showing very clear signs of confusion and decadence.

What an island like Ibiza offers the continental mind and the thousands of young people who land on the island from around the world every year has changed over time. At times, it may even seem to have lost value. But essentially it has remained the same, despite have taken on new forms and new names, and despite greater emphasis being placed on music or on the beach, on rural life or on entertainment, or on solitude or on large crowds. “For most of those who fell in love with Ibiza,” wrote Miguel Siguán in 1983, “this was their secret: they believed that on Ibiza they could combine the most ancient with the most modern, and that through contact with uncontaminated ways of life they could rediscover the roots of an authentic existence that would respond to the needs of the contemporary world. But perhaps there is no point in

searching for a rational explanation to this attraction. Perhaps it would be preferable to admit that this is a miracle, that the Pitiusas [Ibiza and Formentera] are one of the psychological axes of the world, and that Ibiza was called to have a unique destiny.” From this unique destiny, Ibiza continually improvises its survival as a legendary destination, with the specific contradictions of our time. Ibiza does what it has always done: improvise, while possibly trusting in its destiny. But it improvises based on an idea of freedom that has been, and continues to be, the kind of freedom one expects from an island. In 1932, a young German called Thomas wrote the following article in the newspaper Diario de Ibiza: “All the people who come here say they have found a people with a profound love for their native land and a very friendly people with strong spiritual qualities. Anyone who has been here, even if only for a few days, leaves having made true friends. There is no doubt that there is almost no other place in the world where visitors have so much freedom and individual independence as on Ibiza.” Liberty and individual independence: perhaps that is the most important treasure the island has to offer its seekers.

These words were written in 1932 and have been repeated without cease since then, even to this day. If we were to attempt to provide a more or less logical explanation to those words, it would have little, if any, importance. •

as Dalias, lugar de renombre en el mundo entero por su oferta cultural y de ocio, es un ejemplo muy representativo de la evolución que ha vivido la isla de Ibiza en los últimos sesenta años. El establecimiento abrió sus puertas el 4 de noviembre de 1954 como bar y sala de fiestas para los vecinos del pueblo de Sant Carles gracias a la férrea voluntad de Juan Marí Juan, su primer propietario y activo y vivaz padre del actual.

Los comienzos fueron alentadores, pero no todos los vientos soplaban a favor de la iniciativa. El día de la inauguración se facturaron unas esperanzadoras 6.600 pesetas (unos 40 euros actuales), trabajosamente ganadas sirviendo las copas a una peseta y a dos las bebidas de marca.

El éxito alertó a algunas de las fuerzas vivas de la localidad, que vieron la gran acogida que tuvo el nuevo local como una amenaza para la moral y las buenas costumbres de la época. Así lo creyó el párroco, que contraprogramaba las fiestas que anunciaba el bar de carretera con películas que proyectaba por medio de un rudimentario sistema.

Pero la semilla del triunfo ya germinaba en Las Dalias, que se convirtió en el punto de reunión de todas las personas del pueblo, que trabajaban fundamentalmente en la agricultura, y de los primeros y todavía escasos turistas que llegaban a la isla.

El avispado Juan Marí Juan no tardó en descubrir el filón que suponían estos visitantes, a los que comenzó a agasajar con la que probablemente fue la primera barbacoa en toda la isla de Ibiza.

Las terrazas del bar se convertían por las noches en una fiesta con pollo, sangría y cava a espuertas, espectáculo flamenco y baile con orquesta. Corrían los primeros años 60, década cuyo final vino marcado por un vendaval de cambios sociales, culturales, políticos y de mentalidad entre la juventud. Brotaron entonces los primeros signos de contestación y revolución.

al sistema imperante.

El que había sido durante muchos años un bar y restaurante de carácter familiar y vecinal, se convirtió en una plataforma de experiencias y reivindicaciones de jóvenes que rechazaban los valores impuestos por las anteriores generaciones y que encontraban aquí esa atmósfera, entre rural y evolucionista, en la que pudieron consolidar las referencias de sus nuevas vidas.

En ningún otro sitio del mundo podían hallarse más a gusto y en su espacio natural como en el norte de una isla con un establecimiento de nombre tan florido. Los tiempos hippies de Las Dalias significaron casi una ruptura con el antiguo sistema de funcionamiento del local, generando una cultura propia y convirtiéndose en una lanza de vanguardia.

Y todo esto fue posible en parte por el carácter abierto y cosmopolita del pueblo

ibicenco, que aceptó a los nuevos clientes con generosidad y complacencia.

Muchos jóvenes de la isla se dejaron influir por esas nuevas corrientes y se contagiaron también del espíritu hippy.

Todavía en 2010, tanto los nacidos en Ibiza como los llegados de otros países mantienen esa actitud de vida, trabajando distintas formas de artesanía y sintiéndose en Las Dalias como en su feudo natural.

Pero hasta llegar aquí hubo mucho camino que recorrer y muchas adversidades que superar. Y es que el bar que entonces era ya muy popular en Sant Carles provocaba nuevamente cierta desconfianza entre algún sector del pueblo, que veía entre los nuevos asiduos un cierto peligro para los jóvenes de la isla. Otra vez la visión comercial y de futuro de Juan Marí se puso de manifiesto. Las Dalias, tras un ligero bache, volvió a reinventarse,

resurgiendo aún con más fuerza que antes. El presente del establecimiento es brillante. Han ganado numerosos y fieles adeptos a sus convocatorias, pero sin perder en ningún momento a su parroquia natural.

La creación del mercadillo artesanal en 1985 supuso un gigantesco paso adelante en su proyección exterior, dando pie a un sinfín de reportajes en revistas y programas televisivos de todo el mundo dedicados a los viajes.

Las Dalias es hoy un enclave de referencia para quienes buscan un lugar diferente, libre, colorista, siempre con nuevas y atractivas propuestas que cristalizan especialmente por la noche con sus espectáculos de flamenco, chill out, rockeros, orientales y de cualquier tipo de manifestación cultural o contracultural. Las Dalias mira al futuro con decisión y optimismo y sin perder nunca de vista su magnífico pasado. •

During the 1970s, hippies, tourists and all kinds of customers lived together in Las Dalias with only one objective in mind: to enjoy life!

as Dalias, a place of world renown thanks to its culture and leisure, is a very representative example of how the island has evolved over the past 60 years. Las Dalias opened its doors on 4 November 1954 as a bar and dance hall for the locals in Sant Carles thanks to the fierce determination of Juan Marí Juan, the first owner and the active, lively father of the current owner.

Business was slow at first, but not everything was working in favour of Juan Marí’s project. On the opening day they took in a promising total of 6,600 pesetas (about €40), which were hard earned by serving draught drinks at 1 peseta a glass and brand-name drinks at 2 pesetas.

Some of the local powers-that-be noticed the success and saw it as a threat to the

morals and good customs of the time.

Among those who were not best pleased was the local priest, who reacted by using a very rudimentary system to screen films at the same time that events took place at the bar.

But the seed of success had already been sown at Las Dalias, which became the place where all the people in the local community – mainly farmers – and the first tourists – who were still few and far between – would meet.

The bar and dance hall, which was built with financial support from a friend of the owners, thus began to be used by everyone in Sant Carles for celebrating weddings, baptisms and First Communions. This was just the start of a long series of good business decisions.

The progressive rise in the number of tourists led to the first major

breakthrough for Las Dalias. It did not take long for the wise Juan Marí Juan to discover the golden opportunity these visitors represented, and he began to entertain them with what was probably the first barbecue on the island of Ibiza.

At night, the terraces of the bar played host to parties with barbecued chicken, free-flowing sangria and cava, flamenco shows and dancing led by an orchestra.

The early 1960s went by, a decade that would end with major social, cultural and political changes and major changes in the mindset of young people. It was at this time that the first signs of protest and revolution began to appear.

The people running Las Dalias have always been attentive to changes in society. At Las Dalias, those nonconformist young people rebelling against the prevailing system found a

refuge of freedom.

What for many years had been a family and community bar and restaurant became a platform for the experiences and demands of young people who rejected the values imposed by previous generations. At Las Dalias they found this rural yet evolutionary atmosphere where they could consolidate the references of their new lives.

Nowhere in the world could they feel more at home and in their natural environment than in the north of an island with an establishment with such a famous name. The hippy times resulted in what was almost a break with the way the establishment used to operate, with Las Dalias developing its own cuttingedge culture.

All this was partly made possible thanks to the open, cosmopolitan character of the Ibizan people, who accepted the

new customers generously and willingly.

Many young people on the island were influenced by this new way of life and were infected by the hippy spirit.

Today, in 2010, both those born on Ibiza and those who have come from other countries still have this attitude towards life, working with different types of crafts and feeling at home at Las Dalias.

But we had a long journey with many obstacles to overcome before we reached this point. The bar that had become so popular in Sant Carles once again generated mistrust among some members of the public, who saw the new regulars as somewhat of a danger to the young people of the island. Once again Juan Marí showed his commercial, forwardlooking vision. After a slightly rough patch, Las Dalias reinvented itself once again, coming out even stronger than before.

Es un espacio en el que conviven en pacífica armonía y contagiosa alegría muchas generaciones de ibicencos de Sant Carles con otros muchos llegados a la isla procedentes de los más diversos lugares del mundo y que han hecho de Las Dalias su punto de reunión y esparcimiento, e incluso, en muchos casos, su lugar de trabajo. “Yo era agricultor, aunque siempre había tenido la ilusión de montar un bar en la carretera”, evoca hoy el fundador, padre del actual propietario, a quien todo el mundo conoce

como Juanito. “Entonces no había en Sant Carles más que uno o dos coches, la carretera era sólo un camino de cabras y el único bar abierto en el pueblo era Can Pep de sa Botiga, actualmente conocido como Ca n’Anita”, rememora el fundador de esta especie de parque temático del ocio, la diversión y el consumo multicultural más genuinamente ibicenco que es hoy Las Dalias.

Los inicios no fueron fáciles. A los dos años que duró la construcción del edificio que hoy acoge el complejo de Las Dalias, entonces de dimensiones mucho más reducidas que

“Entonces no había Coca Cola ni nada de eso”, relata risueño Juan Marí Juan, un auténtico baúl de recuerdos, que conserva muchas anécdotas con más frescura que las bebidas que servía en el bar. No queda hoy

en Las Dalias ni un ejemplar de las delicadas flores que dan nombre a tan representativo espacio, visita gratamente obligatoria para cualquier residente o turista de Ibiza. Han sido reemplazadas por árboles, que crean un acogedor y gratificante microclima incluso en los días más tórridos del verano. Es casi el único tributo que se ha pagado al futuro, aparte del incremento de los espacios y de las comodidades para los visitantes. No ha cambiado, sin embargo, el espíritu de Las Dalias, que hoy es mucho más que un bar y mucho más que un mercadillo en el que se ofrece la más peculiar artesanía de los

últimos hippies. Es como una gran familia en la que nadie se siente extraño. “Nadie podía imaginar el cambio que iba a dar esto”, se sorprende hoy el pionero empresario. “Lo creé con cuatro mil duros (unos 120 euros actuales) que me prestó un amigo, que los había ganado fabricando carbón en la montaña. El terreno costó a comienzos de los años cincuenta del siglo pasado cinco pesetas el metro cuadrado. Ahora se cotiza a unos veinte euros el metro cuadrado, según calcula Juan Marí. “Al menos a ese precio le han vendido una finca de por aquí a un extranjero”, cita como ejemplo.

Poco a poco fueron cambiando las cosas para Sant Carles y Las Dalias. La ecológica pero poco práctica bicicleta fue sustituida por el floreciente empresario por una moto de escasa cilindrada tras lograr en Palma el permiso para conducirla. “Yo no sabía ir en moto, fui aprendiendo poco a poco”, recuerda. El pequeño bar y sala de fiestas con que comenzó Las Dalias se alimentaba de electricidad con un rudimentario grupo de motores que proporcionaban unos cincuenta caballos de potencia.

“Luego fuimos aumentando, pero estuvimos unos veinte años procurándonos nuestra propia luz”, rememora hoy, feliz, a sus 82 años, recorriendo las instalaciones de su negocio. Las Dalias fue creciendo con el sótano, convertido en un restaurante, y con el amplio jardín donde se desarrolla el mercadillo hippy, que celebra este año sus bodas de plata. En el sótano tenía antes su taller de serrería y carpintería, afición que hoy, ya jubilado, sigue practicando. También había un molino de harina del que todavía conserva la muela. “Yo creo que podría

montar un museo etnológico con todas las antigüedades que conservo”, asegura con legítimo orgullo. Casi de museo etnológico es también la reacción del sacerdote que a mediados de los años cincuenta tutelaba la parroquia del pueblo.

Al enterarse de las intenciones del entonces incipiente empresario de montar una sala de fiestas, lugar de posible pecado para sus feligreses, comenzó a programar sesiones de cine para restarle clientela. “Él creyó que yo también quería proyectar películas en Las Dalias, algo que nunca se me había pasado por la cabeza. De hecho, mi mujer y yo íbamos frecuentemente a ver sus películas -recuerda casi con asombro todavía-, pero un día, tras salir de misa, me convocó en la sacristía y pretendía que yo le firmase un papel por el que me comprometía a no ofrecer cine en el bar.

No lo firmé, claro. Le dije que bastaba con mi palabra”. Y la cumplió. Entre las numerosas y diversas actividades que se han llevado a cabo en el establecimiento, con todas las manifestaciones artísticas

y culturales imaginables convertidas en realidad, jamás ha figurado el cine.

Tampoco en la iglesia se proyectan ya películas para disuadir a la población e impedir que vayan a Las Dalias. El establecimiento de la familia Marí Juan continúa su ascenso pujante como lugar consolidado para todas las culturas, las convencionales y las alternativas. Es el triunfo del derecho a la libertad, que aquí toma carta de naturaleza, y que desde aquí precisamente se fue extendiendo al resto de Ibiza y Formentera hasta hoy.

La libertad que es hoy su estandarte fue gestándose espontánea, lenta pero imparablemente, desde la época en la que durante las fiestas nadie podía bailar muy pegado y, por supuesto, ninguna de las parejas podía besarse sin atenerse a funestas consecuencias. El beso es hoy una de las muchas formas de comunicación que han adoptado con toda naturalidad los amigos de este local, cronológicamente sexagenario, pero de juventud espiritual y formal inmarcesible. •

uan Marí Juan could not have imagined that the bar he opened with much ambition in 1954 close to the church in Sant Carles would eventually become one of the most emblematic icons of Ibiza. With great ingenuity, he was able to overcome the uncertainty surrounding his business ventures, and today Las Dalias has become one of the strongest icons identified with the island. It is to Ibiza what Buckingham Palace is to London and the Eiffel Tower is to Paris.

It is a place where many generations of Ibizans from Sant Carles live together in peaceful harmony and contagious joy with many others who have come to the island from a variety of different places around the world and made Las Dalias the place where they meet, relax and have fun, and even in many cases where they work. “I was a farmer, but I’d always wanted to set up a roadside bar”, says the founder and father of Juanito, the current owner.

“Back then there were only one or two cars in Sant Carles, the road was just a dirt track and the only bar open was Can Pep de sa Botiga, which is now called Ca n’Anita”, recalls the founder of this kind of theme park of leisure, entertainment and the most genuinely Ibizan multicultural consumption that Las Dalias has become today.

Things were not easy at first. After the two years of construction of the building that today houses the Las Dalias complex, which was much smaller than it is today, the owner had to go to huge lengths to stock up on the drinks that customers would usually ask for. “Every day”, explains Juan Marí Juan cheerfully, “I would cycle more than 20 km (13 miles) between Sant Carles and Ibiza Town, then cycle back carrying the drinks I had bought in Can Raios and the

ice bars, which I would put in a bag and which would almost have melted by the time I got back. There was no Coca-Cola or anything like that.” Juan Marí Juan is a veritable trove of memories, able to recall things from decades ago like they happened just yesterday. Today there is no trace of the flowers (“las dalias” means “the dahlias” in Spanish) that gave their name to this most emblematic place that any resident or tourist on Ibiza must visit. The dahlias have been replaced by trees, creating a beautifully cosy microclimate, even on the most torrid summer days.

It’s almost the only thing that’s been done with one eye on the future, apart from the enlargement of the facilities for the visitors.

But the spirit of Las Dalias remains unchanged. Though today it is much more than just a bar and much more than a market offering the most peculiar crafts by the most recent hippies, it remains like one big family of which everybody feels a part. “No one could have imagined the change that this would bring about”, says the pioneer entrepreneur, surprised at his own success. “I spent 20,000 pesetas (€120 in today’s money) setting it up, which a friend lent me after earning it producing coal in the mountains. In the early 1950s the price of land was five pesetas (€0.03) per square metre.” Today the price is more than €20 per square metre, according to Juan Marí: “At least, that’s the price that one property was sold at to a foreigner”, he says.

Little by little things began to change for Sant Carles and Las Dalias. The flourishing businessmen replaced his environmentally friendly, but rather unpractical bicycle with a light motorcycle after obtaining his licence in Palma, on Majorca. “I didn’t know how to ride a motorbike,” he recalls, “but gradually I learnt.” The small bar and dance hall with

which everything began got its electricity supply from primitive generators that provided about 50 horsepower.

“We gradually increased the power, and had to generate our own electricity for about twenty years”, recalls the happy 82-year-old as he walks round the premises of his business. Las Dalias – which will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year – grew through the opening of a restaurant in the basement and a vast garden, which became the home of the hippy market. The basement was where he used to have his sawmill and carpentry workshop, and although he is now retired, he still enjoys this hobby. There was also a flour mill, from which he still has the wheel. “I think I could set up an ethnological museum with all the antiques I keep”, he justifiably boasts.

The reaction of the local priest for the parish of Sant Carles in the mid-1950s would almost fit in well in an ethnological museum too. When he learnt of the intentions of the then incipient entrepreneur, who wanted to set up a dance hall – a place where the parishioners might indulge in sin – he began to organise cinema sessions to keep the clientele away. “The priest thought I wanted to screen films at Las Dalias”, explains Juan Marí, who still seems astonished at the priest’s reaction. “But I never even considered doing that. In fact, my wife and I often went to see his films,

but one day, as we left church after mass, he invited me into the sacristy wanting me to sign a document saying I wouldn’t screen films in the bar. Of course, I didn’t sign it. I told him my word was enough.” Juan Marí kept his word. Of all the activities that have taken place at Las Dalias, including all the manifestations of art and culture imaginable, films have never been one of them. Even the church no longer screens films to dissuade and prevent people from going to Las Dalias. The Marí Juan family’s establishment is continuing to consolidate itself as a place for all cultures, both conventional and alternative.

It represents the triumph of the right to freedom, a right which has made its home at Las Dalias and has been spreading out to the rest of Ibiza and Formentera to the present day.

The freedom that today is its standard was conceived spontaneously and slowly, but also irreparably, from a time when people were not allowed to dance in close contact with each other and of course no partners could kiss without expecting severe consequences. Today, kissing is one of the many forms of communication that the friends of this establishment have adopted and used freely, friends who, despite being sexagenarians, have an unfading, ever-present spiritual youth. •

sto va a ser difícil... me han hecho el encargo de un escrito breve sobre Las Dalias... Bueno, es verdad que yo he ido al mercadillo de Las Dalias, y al teatro, y a conciertos, y he conocido gente allí, pero... No sé qué escribir sobre Las Dalias.

Tendré que documentarme para empezar. A ver... Dalia es una planta (Dahlia spp)... “Se la considera la flor nacional de México, pero su nombre es en realidad escandinavo. Dahl era un discípulo de Carl von Linneo, y de ahí viene el nombre de la flor... En el siglo XVIII la trajeron a Europa pensando que podía servir para comer... como las patatas...” (¡¡patatas!!).

Esto no va bien —pensé— ¿qué tenían que ver las flores llamadas dalias, México y el sueco Linneo con San Carlos? Nada, evidentemente nada. Debía seguir buscando, sin duda me llamarán pronto para saber cómo va mi escrito.

En la rotonda de Ses Mines encontré una nueva pista, una señal blanca y negra ponía: “Sant Carles de Peralta”. Lo de Sant Carles estaba claro pero eso de Peralta me descolocó bastante. Internet es una maravilla... Busco “Peralta” y encuentro “Berenguer de Peralta fue, en el siglo XIII, un caballero propietario de las actuales tierras de la parroquia de Sant Carles, a las cuales dio su nombre... En ellas cobraba un impuesto para mantener un caballo, un caballero y sus armas y

armaduras...” !!Ahora me he ido casi a los tiempos de Sir Lancelot!! Si Sant Carles era de Berenguer de Peralta... Las Dalias también...

Creo que esto no le gustará a Juanito, y a su padre menos...

Tengo que encontrar algo que me sirva; a ver esto: “En 1620 los soldados y los payeses armados acudieron a la zona de Peralta para enfrentarse a los turcos que habían desembarcado en Pou des Lleó...”.

1620, de eso hace mucho tiempo... “En 1958 se iniciaron los vuelos regulares entre Ibiza y Palma”. Es decir que Joan Marí abrió Las Dalias cuando los turistas venían a nado o remando a Ibiza. ¿Turistas? ¿Pero había turistas en 1954? A ver... Teclearé “turistas Ibiza” y ya veremos qué sale: “... En 1950 había 481 plazas hoteleras en toda Ibiza y Formentera; en 1955 había ya 1.008 plazas...

Pero ninguna de ellas estaba en Sant Carles...”

—vaya, sigo leyendo— “... Era el inicio del turismo de sol y playa y la oferta se concentró en las poblaciones más importantes, la capital y en las zonas de costa...”. Ahora sí que estamos bien... ¡Si en Sant Carles no hay playa! Entonces... ¿qué hacía este hombre abriendo un local en un lugar sin playa antes de que llegaran los primeros turistas? La lógica dice que Joan Marí de Can Basora tendría que haber seguido haciendo sillas y mesas y no abrir “el local que sería la leyenda de Ibiza”. Este hombre, o tuvo una idea genial o aquel día de San Carlos bebió demasiado “vi pagès”... Hay algo que se me escapa... ¿Dónde puedo buscar? Internet ya no me sirve... Le preguntaré a alguien. (Días más tarde) Ahora

sí que estoy completamente desconcertado.

No podré escribir nada para el homenaje a Las Dalias, Juanito no me invitará nunca más o incluso no me dejará entrar cuando vaya a un concierto o al mercadillo... Mi padre me ha dicho que Las Dalias era una sala de fiestas y que, claro, iban los ibicencos; después iban los ibicencos y los “peluts”; después iban los ibicencos, los peluts y los turistas... Y ahora va todo el mundo... ¿Peluts? Vuelvo al diccionario, por internet, claro, [pelut, en catalán, adjetivo masculino singular, dícese de aquel que tiene mucho pelo] No lo entiendo, ¿se referirá al caballo de Berenguer de Peralta?, ¿a los turcos de 1620?, ¿al ilustre obispo de 1785?

Verdaderamente no lo entiendo. Volveré a preguntar...

(Más días y aún más tarde) Ya he recibido un mensaje de Jesús Turel, Juanito pide mi escrito... Ya les dije que yo no sé hacer estas cosas; no he contestado, no sé que decirles... Preguntando, preguntando he dado con Catalina, y mientras cortaba hierba para los conejos me ha explicado, más o menos, quiénes eran los, para mí, misteriosos

“peluts”. En su explicación queda claro que eran distintos y aunque se ve que no le caían mal del todo, al final ha sentenciado: “Cada uno en su casa”. A Xicu, su marido, se ve que no le caían tan bien, y cuando ha sabido de qué hablábamos se ha ido haciendo aspavientos y murmurando maldiciones. He estado un buen rato con Catalina mientras contaba historias de “peluts” y llenaba aquel saco de jugosa hierba verde. Está claro pues que los “peluts” eran extranjeros, que vivían en casas alquiladas, que vestían raro y, por supuesto, llevaban el pelo muy largo. La señora me ha dado otra pista... Además de “peluts”, los ha llamado “jipis” o yo lo he entendido así. Mi padre, cuando le he vuelto a preguntar sobre el tema, se ha reído de mí y me ha explicado que eran “hippys” o, mejor, “hippies”. El diccionario me aclara algo las cosas: [hippie: specially in the 1960’s a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair...”]. He aquí los “peluts”.

Sigo preguntando y todo el mundo me cuenta cosas interesantes sobre los “peluts”, hubo incluso, al final, algunos altercados que

Entonces, a ver si me aclaro... Juanito Marí de Can Basora abrió Las Dalias para sus paisanos del pueblo e iban también algunos de Santa Eulària; al poco tiempo ya llegaba gente de más lejos y en unos años Juanito mezclaba en su bar ibicencos, extranjeros de pelo largo y turistas. Y ahora va todo el mundo a Las Dalias... Los ibicencos que estaban aquel 4 de noviembre de 1954, sus hijos y sus nietos, algunos “peluts” de entonces y otros más recientes, turistas, famosos de incógnito, pobres, ricos y normales... Pienso que tiene mérito conseguir un lugar donde se dé cita gente tan diferente; hay que ser constante para conseguirlo, trabajador, imaginativo, abierto, visionario. Tener un sexto sentido para captar algo en el ambiente que permita mantener un local abierto tanto tiempo y a través de tantos cambios... Ahora que puedo entenderlo un poco, podré escribir algo para no quedar mal del todo con los dos Juanitos de Las Dalias. •

Farmers, peluts and tourists T

his is going to be tricky… I’ve been asked to write a brief article about Las Dalias. I have been to the market, the theatre and concerts and I’ve met people there, but I really don’t know what to write about Las Dalias. I’ll have to start by doing some research. Let’s see… The name “Las Dalias” refers to a plant (Dahlia spp.)… “It is considered the national flower of Mexico, but its name is actually Scandinavian. The flower is named after Dahl, a disciple of Carl Linnaeus… In the 18th century the flowers were brought to Europe, as it was thought they might be edible… like potatoes…” (potatoes!). “This isn’t going well”, I thought to myself. “What do flowers called dahlias, Mexico and the Swede Carl Linnaeus have to do with Sant Carles?” Absolutely nothing of course. I had to keep searching, as I knew that someone would probably call me soon to find out how my article was coming along.

I found a new clue at the Ses Mines roundabout, where a black and white signpost pointed towards “Sant Carles de Peralta”.

I understood where the “Sant Carles” came from, but I wasn’t sure about the “Peralta”. The Internet is a wonderful thing! I looked up “Peralta” and found the following information: “In the 18th century, Berenguer de Peralta owned the land that is currently in Sant Carles, to which his name was suffixed…

On this land he charged a tax to maintain a horse, a knight and his weapons and armour…”. Now it sounds like I’ve gone back to the times of Sir Lancelot! If Sant Carles belonged to Berenguer de Peralta, then… so did Las Dalias. I don’t think Juanito will like this, and his father definitely won’t…

I need to find something useful. How about this: “In 1620, the soldiers and armed peasants came to the area of Peralta to confront the Turks that had landed in Pou des Lleó…”. 1620 is a long time ago… I’d better keep searching. “In 1785, the Most Illustrious and Reverend [well, looks like this won’t be much use either!] Bishop Manuel Abad y Lasierra decided to build a church in Peralta and dedicate it to Charles Borromeo…”. Not bad. At least it mentions this Charles guy. Let’s read

Let’s see… Las Dalias, “vénda of Peralta”. Aha! Sant Carles, Peralta, Las Dalias… Now I’m getting somewhere.

Woo hoo! Finally! Look what I’ve found: www.lasdalias.squarespace. com. Job done. Just copy down a few things and that’s it. Let’s see: “On the Feast of Saint Charles, on 4 November 1954, the farmer and carpenter Joan Marí opened a bar that would become an icon of Ibiza…”. That can’t be right. 1954? A mere carpenter opening the place that hosts the best concerts on the island, experimental theatre and a market 56 years ago? Hmm, I’d better find out what there was in Sant Carles in 1954 that inspired a carpenter to take the risk of opening up a place like this. I’ll read on…

This Internet thing’s great! I’ve now found this: “In 1958, regular flights began between Ibiza and Palma.”

That means that Joan Marí opened Las Dalias when tourists had to swim or row to Ibiza. But tourists?

Were there really tourists in 1954?

Let’s see.... I’ll search for the words “tourists” and “Ibiza” and see what comes up: “In 1950 there were 481 hotel beds on Ibiza and Formentera; by 1955 there were 1,008… But none of those were in Sant Carles.” Wow. Let’s read some more: “This was the start of beach tourism. Most of the accommodation was located within the large towns, the capital and the coastal areas…”. But there’s not even a beach in Sant Carles! So, what was this guy doing opening a bar somewhere where there was no beach and no tourists yet? Logic would suggest that this Joan Marí from Can Basora should have carried on making tables and chairs rather than opening up the place that would become a legendary icon of Ibiza.

He’d either had an incredible idea or he’d drunk too much wine on that Feast of Saint Charles! I must be missing something… Where can I find out what? There’s nothing else on the Internet, so I’ll ask around.

(Many days later) Now I’m completely stuck. I’ve got nothing to write about Las Dalias. Juanito will never invite me back and won’t even let

me in when I want to go to a concert or the market. My father told me Las Dalias was a dance hall where first Ibizans went; then Ibizans and peluts; then Ibizans, peluts and tourists; and now everyone. What’s a pelut? I go back to the dictionary, on the Internet of course, and find the following: “pelut, noun: Catalan word meaning ‘hairy’.” I don’t understand. Is it referring to Berenguer de Peralta’s horse? The Turks in 1620? The illustrious bishop of 1785? I really don’t understand. I’ll ask around a bit more…

(Many more days later). I’ve received a message from Jesús Turel.

Juanito wants to see my article… I told them from the start that I don’t know how to do these things. Now I don’t know what to say, so I haven’t replied… I keep asking around and eventually stumble upon Catalina. While cutting grass for rabbits she explains – more or less – who these mysterious “peluts” were. Her explanation made it clear that they were very unusual people, and although apparently she didn’t dislike them completely, she ended by saying: “each to his own”. Her husband Xicu clearly disliked them more, and when he heard what we were talking about he started gesticulating and cursing under his breath. I spent a good while with Catalina hearing her stories about peluts, long enough for her to fill her bag with lush green grass. Clearly, then, the peluts were foreigners living in rented accommodation, dressing strangely and, of course, with very long hair. The lady gives me another clue… Apart from calling them peluts, she also referred to them as “jipis”. Or at least that’s how I assumed it was written. But when I spoke to my Dad again he told me they were “hippys”, spelt with an “h”, or better still, “hippies”. The dictionary cleared things up

a little: “hippy: (especially in the 1960s) a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair”. These were the peluts. I keep asking and everybody tells me interesting things about the peluts.

Towards the end, there are even a few altercations that break the “peace and love”. But that’s another story…

So, let’s see whether I’ve understood… Juanito Marí of Can Basora opened Las Dalias for his fellow countrymen in the town. Some people from Santa Eulària also went. It was not long before people began to arrive from further afield, and soon Juanito’s bar was a melting pot of Ibizans, long-haired foreigners and tourists. And now everyone goes there: the locals who were there on that 4 November 1954 and their children and grandchildren, some of the peluts from the early days and other more recent ones, tourists, celebrities acting like normal customers, poor people, rich people and normal people. It’s very commendable to manage to get so many different types of people to come to the same place. To achieve this you have to be persevering, hard-working, imaginative, open and visionary. You need a sixth sense to catch something in the atmosphere that makes it possible to keep an establishment open for so long and through so many changes. Now I understand things a little better, I can write something so I don’t look so bad to the two Juanitos of Las Dalias. •

n una sociedad en la que se trabaja cada vez más con ideas intangibles y las manos se han convertido en mecánicas tecleadoras, todavía queda un reducto de artesanos que utiliza su creatividad y sus hábiles dedos para crear objetos únicos. Ellos mantienen el contacto con el barro, con las telas, con los metales y las piedras, recordando que, en el origen, procedemos de cazadores y nómadas autosuficientes.

Hace 25 años que Las Dalias acoge a estos creadores y este año lo quiere celebrar con ellos y con sus clientes, tanto fieles como recién llegados, con nuevas propuestas y actividades. Hay mucho que conmemorar. Nadie podía imaginar que lo que comenzó en 1985 con cinco puestos iba a superar los 150 en la actualidad, con una variedad casi infinita de atractivos: objetos exóticos, vestidos de ensueño, joyas exclusivas… Piezas únicas confeccionadas por los propios artesanos o traídas desde India, Nepal o Bali.

“He recorrido muchos mercadillos del mundo pero todavía hay puestos de Las Dalias que me sorprenden con objetos que no he visto en ningún otro lugar”, confiesa Rebeca Jiménez, una de sus clientas devotas, que aprovecha cada escapada a Ibiza para disfrutar del ambiente de los puestos. “A veces vengo con la promesa de no comprar nada, pero me es imposible, siempre me atrae algo sin remedio”, confiesa entre risas.

Más allá de una simple reunión de puestos, este mercadillo que cumple un cuarto de siglo es un rincón para deleitar los cinco sentidos. Lejos de acomodarse en su éxito, la dirección de Las Dalias planea constantemente nuevas propuestas de entretenimiento y más variedad, como el nuevo mercadillo de productos biológicos, enseres de segunda mano y antigüedades de los domingos. •

n a society in which one increasingly works with intangible ideas and in which hands have become mechanical typists, there remains a stronghold of craft traders who use their creativity and skilled hands to create unique objects. They remain in contact with clay, fabric, metals and stones, reminding us that once we were self-sufficient hunters and nomads. Las Dalias began to welcome these artists 25 years ago and this year they want to celebrate with those artists and their long-standing and more recent customers with new proposals and activities. There is a lot to celebrate. Nobody could have imagined that what began in 1985 with five stalls would grow to include more than 150 stalls today, offering an almost infinite variety of crafts: exotic objects, amazing outfits, exclusive jewellery, etc., and unique items made by the craft traders themselves or imported from India, Nepal or Bali. “I’ve been to many markets around the world, but there are still stalls at Las Dalias that surprised me with objects that I’ve never seen anywhere else”, explains Rebecca Jiménez, one of the devout customers, who makes sure she comes to enjoy the atmosphere of the market stalls every time she gets away to Ibiza. Laughing away, she says: “Sometimes when I come I promise myself I won’t buy anything, but it’s impossible, as I always find something I like.”

More than just a collection of stalls, this 25-year-old market is an ideal place to stimulate the five senses. Far from resting on the laurels of their success, the managers of Las Dalias are constantly coming up with new entertainment activities and greater variety, such as the new Sunday market for biological products, secondhand goods and antiques. •

as fechas se pierden en mi memoria, aunque gracias al dios Google se pueden recuperar a través de un teclado cualquiera. Pido cita (al teclado y a Google) y leo: Las Dalias-Ibiza, 14 de febrero de 1985. Creo que nunca me había dado cuenta, o no me sorprendería tanto, de que un mercadillo que es una auténtica coctelera de cultura mediterránea con aderezos básicamente asiáticos nació en una fecha americana de lo más freak, el día de San Valentín, el de “Hoy te quiero más que ayer, pero menos que mañana”. Aquel día de hace 25 años, el santo del amor se desmelenó para vestirse de heredero romántico de una generación ya entonces enterrada en San Francisco, la ciudad en la que nació, la del hippysmo, para poner a la venta en pleno campo ibicenco sus sueños de artesanía, para acoger al chico de la guitarra, al de la armónica, al de la hierba que nos ayudaba a relativizar lo más absurdo pero ineludible de la realidad, la supervivencia.

Los cuatro puestos iniciales se han multiplicado como esporas y los productos artesanos siguen ahí, aunque compartiendo ya protagonismo con indumentaria, joyas y objetos más industriales, con frutas transgénicas y zumos a precio de gin tonic de diseño. ¿Acaso importa? No, para nada, y a quien diga que sí, que nada es

ya lo que era, urge invitarle a reflexionar que ninguno de nosotros, los que crecimos con el mercadillo de los sábados, somos tampoco lo que éramos. Soy de las que ha descubierto que aquel sentimiento de que Ibiza te acoge o te rechaza es la mentira de algún iluminado, que los menos informados piensan que es una parada de libertad cuando en realidad es sólo geografía de pretextos, de huidas, de refugio, un baúl en el que almacenar los intentos fallidos y del que extraer incontables justificaciones para, por un tiempo, detenerse en un camino que se siente equivocado y así instalarse en otro que regala exuberancia y promete la remisión del alma.

Ibiza es mucho más, es una isla formada por cientos de pequeñas islas, y ninguna de ellas mantiene necesariamente conexión con las otras: la neo-hippy, la snob, la pija, la aristócrata, la de los famosos, la de los clubbers, la de los nuevos ricos horteras. O la de los románticos, como yo, que siguen suspirando, a pesar del exceso de cemento, por un clima generoso, unas impagables ensaladas de patata y tomate, un mar que pide a gritos que le ames, un campo que ofrece lo que posee, la paz, y una parada sabática en un mercadillo de Sant Carles que, al igual que yo, ya no es lo que era. Sabe más y ríe mejor. Hoy te quiero más que ayer, y no sé qué sucederá mañana. Mientras espero a saberlo, Dalias, te voy a seguir queriendo aunque sólo sea por lo vivido en ti y contigo. •

host the guy with the guitar, harmonica and weed that helped us put the most absurd yet inevitable aspect of reality – survival – to the back of our minds. The original four stalls have multiplied like spores and the craft products remain, though they now share the limelight with clothing, jewellery and more industrial objects, genetically modified fruits, and fruit juices sold at the price of designer gin and tonics. Does it matter? No, not at all. And I would invite those who say it does, those who say that nothing is like it used to be, to reflect upon the fact that none of us, none of those of us who grew up with the Saturday market, are what we used to be either. I am among those who have discovered that the belief that Ibiza either welcomes you or rejects you is a lie made up by some enlightened soul.

The least informed think Ibiza is a place to stop for freedom, when in reality it is simply a land of pretexts, evasions and refuge, a trove where failed ventures are put on one side and

I book an appointment (with my keyboard and with Google) and I read: Las Dalias-Ibiza, 14 February 1985. I don’t think I’d ever realised – if I had I wouldn’t have been so surprised when I read it – that this market that is a veritable potpourri of Mediterranean culture with mainly Asian adornments was born on that most weird date in the American calendar: Valentine’s Day, the day of “Today I love you more than yesterday, but less than tomorrow”. On that date 25 years ago, the patron saint of love went wild and took on the guise of of the romantic heir of a generation already buried in San Francisco – the city of the hippy movement in which he was born – to put his craft dreams on sale right in the heart of the Ibizan countryside, and to

uncountable excuses are found for stopping in one’s seemingly mistaken tracks and moving on to different tracks that offer exuberance and promise remission to the soul. Ibiza is so much more. It is an island formed by hundreds of tiny islands, none of which are necessarily connected each other: there are islands for the neo-hippies, the snobs, the posh, the famous, the clubbers, and the vulgar nouveaux riches.

There are islands for the romantics like me, who, despite the plethora of cement, still long for the generous climate, the priceless potato and tomato salads, a sea crying out to be loved, a countryside that offers what it has, tranquillity, and a Saturday trip to the market in Sant Carles, which, like me, is not what it used to be. Today it knows more and laughs better. Today I love you more than yesterday, and I know not what tomorrow might bring.

And while I wait to find out, beloved Dalias, I shall continue to love you, be it only for what together you and I have experienced. •

l mercadillo hippy de Las Dalias, que cada año bate récords de asistencia, celebra en 2010 su vigesimoquinto aniversario. “La idea de abrirlo no surgió por generación espontánea, sino que fue el resultado de un proyecto que fuimos madurando Helga Watson-Todd, que dirigía una galería de arte en nuestro establecimiento, y yo. Cuando ella dejó de trabajar, me ocupé yo solo”, recuerda Juan Fernando Marí Juan, como se llama realmente el hijo del fundador del bar de Las Dalias y actual responsable de todo el complejo, incluido el restaurante, la sala de conciertos y, por supuesto, el mercadillo artesanal.

Todo el mundo le conoce como Juanito, y si por algo destaca, en parte por herencia genética, es por su permanente visión vanguardista a la hora de canalizar y materializar las inquietudes de los artistas y del incalculable número de visitantes del mercadillo. Juanito también maneja los datos y las cuentas: “Durante un sábado del mes de agosto, si las condiciones meteorológicas son favorables, pueden llegar a pasar por Las Dalias alrededor de veinte mil personas”. Éste es un fenómeno que sólo pueden reproducir durante un mismo día las discotecas de la isla, pero “todas juntas”, puntualiza el empresario. Este aniversario tan especial no pasará inadvertido para los amigos de Las Dalias, ya que el equipo que trabaja para que todo funcione bien ha preparado un calendario de actos conmemorativos, en el que no sólo se mantendrán las actividades que confieren la personalidad de Las Dalias, sino que se irán incorporando algunas novedades.

“Queremos desdoblar el mercadillo de los sábados y abrirlo también los domingos de agosto. Seguiremos organizando todos los miércoles la fiesta Namasté, que este año que ha preparado un espectáculo especial, y un día entre semana seguirá actuando el guitarrista Paco Fernández, que nunca falta los viernes. Y además seguiremos con las ‘jam’ y las actuaciones improvisadas que van surgiendo durante todo el verano”, relata Juan Marí Juan con una sonrisa. Y es que este tipo de actuaciones suponen para los aficionados a la música una inagotable caja de agradables sorpresas. Entre las más sonadas de los últimos años es preciso destacar las de Nina Hagen, Andy Taylor -miembro de Duran Duran-, así como las de los españoles Coque Malla, Los Rebeldes, Loquillo y Bulldog, entre otros muchos.

Por otro lado, y siguiendo con este año repleto de celebraciones, Las Dalias conmemora también en 2010 el quinto aniversario de su Night Market, que hasta ahora se abría los lunes por la noche de junio a septiembre y que este año se extiende también a los martes durante los meses de julio y agosto.

Igualmente poblada de nombres ilustres está la lista de asiduos de Las Dalias. En ella figuran Mick Jagger, Naomi Campbell, la duquesa de Alba, el cantante Mick Hutchnal -líder de Simple Red-, Antonia dell’Atte, personajes relacionados con el mundo del fútbol como el capitán del Barça, Carles Puyol, o el entrenador de Osasuna y ex seleccionador nacional José Antonio Camacho. Por supuesto que tampoco faltan figuras de la cultura como Emma Suárez, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Silke o Massiel, entre otros muchas. “Cuando

Aquí viene gente de todos los rincones de la isla, lo que también da mucha vida al comercio y a la oferta complementaria del pueblo”, asegura Juanito.

Unas doscientas familias viven actualmente de forma directa de Las Dalias durante la temporada alta. “La gente puede expresarse aquí con toda libertad y convivimos todos en paz y armonía”.

Más de 160 puestos con los más diversos e insospechados artículos en exposición y venta permanecen abiertos al público de Las Dalias durante la temporada alta, aunque sus responsables quieren limitar ahora esta afluencia a los auténticos artesanos. Una medida que nace con la manga muy ancha, ya que los vendedores y atracciones que llevan ya un tiempo aquí seguirán manteniendo su espacio como hasta ahora. “Los veteranos se mantendrán”, recalca el artífice de ese espectáculo colorista, cosmopolita y que pocos turistas quieren perderse durante su visita a la isla. “Las Dalias es un fenómeno conocido en todo el mundo. Hablamos de Ibiza y se asocia con Las Dalias. No hay revista o programa de viajes sobre Ibiza en el que no aparezcamos.

Incluso el New York Times nos dedica algún espacio. Todo ello nos da una gran promoción a nivel mundial”, expresa orgulloso Juanito, que conserva una infinidad de recortes de prensa, reportajes de revistas, fotos y carteles que son testimonio de la intensa vida de este emblemático mercadillo, que es también reflejo de su propia vida. •

as Dalias Hippy Market, which has more and more visitors every year, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2010.

“The idea of the market did not come about spontaneously”, explains Juan Fernando Marí Juan, the son of the founder of the Las Dalias bar and current manager of the entire complex, including the restaurant, concert hall and, of course, the craft market. “It was the result of a plan put together by Helga Watson-Todd, who managed an art gallery at Las Dalias, but when she stopped working I took care of it on my own.”

Though the manager’s real name is Juan Fernando Marí Juan, everyone knows him as Juanito. Partly because of his pedigree, he stands out the most for his permanent avant-garde vision when channelling and

satisfying the interests of the artists and the incalculable number of visitors to the market.

Juanito also deals with the statistics and accounts: “On a Saturday in August,” he explains, “if the weather is good there can be up to 20,000 visitors to Las Dalias.”

The only other places on the island that receive this many visitors on a single day are the nightclubs, but only – Juanito points out – if you take the cumulative figure for all the clubs. This special anniversary will not go unnoticed among the friends of Las Dalias, since the team working to make sure that everything functions well has arranged a series of commemorative events that will include not only the activities that haven shaped the personality of Las Dalias, but also some new ideas.

“We want to expand the Saturday market

to open it on Sundays in August too,” explains a smiling Juan Marí Juan. “We will continue to organise the Namasté party, which this year included a special performance, and one day during the week the guitarist Paco Fernández, who never fails to show up on Fridays, will continue performing. We will also continue with the ‘jams’ and improvised performances that take place during the summer.” For music lovers, these types of performances are a treasure box of wonderful surprises. Among the most talked about performances in recent years we should highlight those by Nina Hagen, Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, and the Spanish groups Coque Malla, Los Rebeldes, Loquillo and Bulldog.

Today around two hundred families live directly from Las Dalias during the high season. “People can express themselves freely here, and we live together in peace and harmony”.

More than 160 stalls with the most diverse, unimaginable items on display and on sale are open to the public during the high season at Las Dalias, although the management now wants to limit the items to those by authentic craft traders. But he is not going to be too strict, as those

traders and attractions that have already been here a long time will be allowed to continue as normal. “The veterans will stay”, insists the creator of this colouristic, cosmopolitan spectacle that few tourists want to miss when visiting Ibiza. “La Dalias is a phenomenon known the world over. When you talk about Ibiza you associate it with Las Dalias. There are no travel shows or magazines about Ibiza in which we don’t appear. Even the New York Times talks about us. All of this gives us great worldwide publicity”, explains a proud Juanito, who has kept countless press cuttings, magazine reports, photographs and posters that are testimony to the intense life of this emblematic market, which is itself a reflection of Juanito’s own life. •

a guitarra es en Paco Fernández una prolongación natural de sus manos, una extremidad con vida propia y rica, un elemento del que surgen las más bellas melodías de forma natural, espontánea pero a base de mucho trabajo. Guiada por un cerebro humano, humanitario y humanista, la guitarra es el instrumento del que brotan las tonalidades y sonoridades más profundas, cultas y armónicas en las manos de este artista que conjuga en su música las culturas andaluza y catalana en un producto de fuerte sabor mediterráneo. “Yo no aprendí a tocar la guitarra, la asumí”, relata ahora el heredero del arte de abuelo, padre y hermanos. Tenía sólo cinco años cuando comenzó a acariciar la guitarra y trece la primera vez que apareció en público para rasguearla con temprano acierto. “Me castigaban por no estudiar, pero me gustaba jugar al fútbol y cantar, la guitarra era lo mío, aunque yo no la elegí”. Hoy hay una serie de cuatro elepés grabados en solitario y cientos de grabaciones con otros artistas.

Ha compuesto la banda sonora de la película ‘El sueño de Ibiza’, de Igor Fioravanti, y la música sigue siendo el principal motor de su vida, aunque rechaza la etiqueta ‘chill out’ para definirla.

“José Padilla, con el que también he colaborado, es el conductor de la locomotora de ese estilo. Los demás somos sólo los vagones”, argumenta. A su llegada a Ibiza, junto con su familia, alternó con sus hermanos el trabajo de la construcción con la música, que tocaba de noche en fiestas de bares para turistas.

“Cuando tenía 13 años estudié guitarra clásica en Barcelona”, evoca ahora, aunque se califica como “un autodidacta”. Sin embargo, Paco Fernández es, ante todo, un músico sin fronteras.

“Durante veinte años he estado tocando la trompeta en la banda municipal de música de Ibiza”, oficio que alternaba con sus colaboraciones con grupos de música para turistas, como Novo Sur 3, Los 3 de Barcelona y Los Morenos del Mar, entre otros.

Ansioso por encontrar su propio estilo, marchó años después a Estados Unidos, cansado de interpretar “bazofia”. Paralelamente componía temas mucho más personales, que aparecerían en su primer elepé, ‘Vivir en el Mediterráneo’. Define sus canciones como “música descriptiva de luz y mar, siempre me arraigo a la tierra para escribir mi música. Tengo igualmente asumida la cultura catalana y la andaluza”. El particular sonido de su guitarra tambíen se descubre en discos del Café del Mar. Su versatilidad admite desde colaboraciones con dj’s como Sven Väth y Pippi hasta videoclips de canciones como ‘Fuentes’, que se ha emitido repetidamente en Antena 3 TV, y que se grabó en una casa de la playa de es Pou des Lleó.

aco Fernández’s guitar is an extension of his hands, a limb with its own, rich life, from which the most beautiful melodies flow out spontaneously, albeit as a result of much hard work. Guided by a human, humanitarian, humanist brain, the guitar is an instrument from which the most profound, cultured, harmonious tones and sounds flow when it is in the hands of this artist who blends together the cultures of Andalusia and Catalonia to produce a product with a distinctly Mediterranean flavour. “I didn’t learn to play the guitar, I just started playing”, explains the man who inherited the art of his grandfather, father and brothers. I was just five years old when I first embraced the guitar and thirteen years old when I performed in public, strumming successfully at a very early age.

They would punish me for not studying, but I liked playing football and singing. Playing the guitar was what I did best, even though I didn’t choose to do so.” He has released four solo albums and has produced hundreds of recordings with other artists. He composed the soundtrack to the film “El sueño de Ibiza”, by Igor Fioravanti, and music remains the main driving force behind his life. He rejects the labelling of his music as “chill out” music: “José Padilla, whom I have worked with, drives the engine of this style.

The rest of us are just train carriages.

When he moved to Ibiza with his family, he and his brothers split their time between construction work and music, which he would play at night in bars at parties organised for tourists.

“When I was 13 years old I studied classical guitar in Barcelona”, he explains, though he also refers to himself as a “self-learner”.

But above all Paco Fernández is a musician without borders.

“For twenty years”, he explains, “I’ve been playing the trumpet for the Ibiza Town municipal band.” He has combined this job with participation in music groups for tourists such as Novo Sur 3, Los 3 de Barcelona and Los Morenos del Mar. Eager to create his own style, years later he left for America, tired of performing “leftovers”. Meanwhile he composed much more personal songs, which figured on his first album, Vivir en el Mediterráneo. He defines his songs as “music that describes light and the sea”. He explains further: “I always look to the earth for my inspiration to write music. I also have the Catalan and Andalusian cultures in me.” The distinctive sound of his guitar can also be heard on CDs

by Café del Mar. His versatility has allowed him to work with DJs like Sven Väth and Dj Pippi and to contribute to producing videos of songs like “Fuentes”, which have been broadcast repeatedly on the TV channel Antena 3 and which was recorded in a house at the beach at Es Pou des Lleó.

n éxito fantástico. Bastan tres palabras para describir el balance de la acampada que por primera vez en la historia protagonizó el mercadillo de Las Dalias en Madrid. Más de 150 artesanos llevaron durante tres días de mayo al Palacio de los Deportes de la capital el espíritu del mercadillo, la atmósfera, el sonido y la imagen de Ibiza. Miles de madrileños alucinaron con la artesanía hecha en la isla, la ropa, el montaje de los puestos, la música de Paco Fernández o el espectáculo de Namasté. Nunca una campaña de promoción de Ibiza había desplazado a tanta gente fuera de la isla. Nunca una iniciativa tan positiva concebida en Ibiza había tenido tanto eco en los medios

de comunicación de toda España. Por fin los principales canales de televisión y cadenas de radio hablaron de Ibiza sin relacionarla con los sucesos, el narcotráfico o la imagen tópica de desenfreno.

La experiencia ha sido tan fructífera que es posible que se repita en otras ciudades europeas. Las Dalias se prepara para el futuro.

Más de 180 periodistas de medios especializados en turismo y viajes, así como agencias y touroperadores establecidos en Madrid, recibieron en persona información sobre Las Dalias. Como dijo la consellera de Turismo, Pepa Marí, “es muy importante que los medios difundan una visión de la isla que nada tiene que ver con esa imagen distorsionada y parcial que hemos visto en numerosas ocasiones y que no se corresponde con la Ibiza más auténtica”. •

wonderful success Those three words are sufficient to describe the three days on which Las Dalias Hippy Market was held in Madrid.

More than 150 craft traders took the spirit of the market to the Palacio de los Deportes sports arena in Madrid, thus exporting the atmosphere, sound and image of Ibiza. Thousands of people in Madrid were amazed by the crafts produced on the island, the clothing, the setup of the stalls, the music by Paco Fernández and the performance

by Namasté. Never has a promotional campaign from Ibiza taken so many people off the island. Never has such a positive initiative conceived on Ibiza had so much media coverage throughout Spain.

Finally the major television and radio stations talked about Ibiza without talking about accidents, crime, drug trafficking or the cliché subject of licentiousness. The whole experience was so fruitful that it may be exported to other European cities. Preparing for the future. More than 180 journalists and media specialising in travel and tourism, as well as Madrid-based travel agencies and tour operators, received information about Las Dalias directly from those involved. The tourism minister for the Balearic Islands, Pepa Marí, said: “It is very important that the media broadcast a perspective of the island that is completely different to the distorted, partial image we have seen on numerous occasions, an image that does not reflect the more authentic side of Ibiza”. •

Las propuestas culinarias del restaurante –donde no hay que dejar de admirar la colección de aperos de labranza antiguos que decoran sus centenarios muros– convencerán con su cocina mediterránea y exótica. Las Dalias by day is quite simply a delight to the senses. It can be savoured while drinking a beer with friends in the beloved old bar or taking a walk in the shade of the trees and bougainvilleas in the garden.

With its Mediterranean and exotic cuisine, the restaurant, whose walls are decorated with a wonderful collection of old farming equipment, will not disappoint you. The Soul Bar, the impressive bedouin tent and the hut are three other places where you can enjoy peace and tranquillity, often accompanied by live mellow music.

And if all these possibilities were not enough, this year there are some new attractions that will surprise even the most loyal visitors. One of these is the Rincón del artista, or Artist’s Corner, where artists can display and sell their work to the public.

Another of the new attractions, created especially for the family day, is the children’s area, where fun and games are to be found every Saturday. Clowns, storytellers, the games area and creative workshops will entertain children as well as parents, who will be delighted that this attraction has been created.
