The U.S. Open has been contested and the La Cumbre greens have been punched, that must mean that summer is here!

The first Men’s Member-Guest Stag Day in over a year took place on June 16th, and the eagerly awaited and over-subscribed event did not disappoint. The format was two balls counting on par 4’s, three balls counting on par 5’s, and all four balls counting on par 3’s. In the Member-Guest Flight, members Brad Schuette and Derrick Wong along with all-star guests Mike Gorton and Bobby Schaefer took home Low Gross honors with 58 points. The Low Net title was won by the team of Aaron Gilles, John Gilles, Bob Bierig and Steve Sherwin with 69 points, followed closely by Paul Portney, Henning Thorsen, Mike Pecsok and Mark Fang with 68 points.

Marshall Gates, Justin Gates, Mike Anderson and Mitch Stanton took home third place with 61 points. In the All-Member Flight, the team of Kelly Foy, Matt Keenan, Pat Wheelock and Barry Gellert took Low Gross with 41 points. There was a tie for Low Net at 60 points between the team of Dale Haslem, Russ Werner, Stuart Jenkins and David Hay and the team of Bill Hein, Logan Gough, Jeff Aubery and JT Aubery. They were followed

by David “Taz” Gronsky, Ken Gaston, Kevin West and Jerry Pimm with 56 points. Closest to the pins were won by Dale Haslem on #5, Brett Buschbom on #7, Brooke Armstrong on #11, and Adrian Phillips on #17.

The 62nd Annual Chase Member-Guest will now be taking place Friday September 24th – Sunday September 26th. We were not able to have this event in 2020 due to COVID, so this year’s event will be extra special, including the return of the great Dan Boever (picture) . Dan

is a world-class shot maker and entertainer, as well as the 2008 RE/MAX National Long Drive Masters Champion. If you played in the 2018 Chase, you will definitely remember him, and if you did not, trust me when I say that this is something that you don’t want to miss.

The field will be limited to 60 teams, so sign up today online or with the Golf Shop. More details will follow in the very near future.

PLEASE NOTE: The dates have been shifted from Thursday-Saturday to Friday-Sunday to accommodate Mr. Boever’s performance and other extracurriculars.

As some of you may have seen, retiring USGA CEO Mike Davis caddied for marker Jason Gore in the third round of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Afterwards, Davis was asked if he was nervous caddying in such a huge event. His response was that the only thing he was nervous about was raking bunkers properly. Tour players expect perfect bunker conditions, and tour caddies are expected

MONTHLY REMINDERS: Despite numerous reminders, people continue to leave bunkers poorly raked or completely unraked.

I’m sure that everyone takes care of their belongings at home, right?

Well this course belongs to all of us, so please treat it with respect and remember that there are others playing behind you. Rakes should be placed in bunkers with teeth down and handle resting on the lower lip of the bunker. Unfixed ball marks on the greens seem to be on the rise. It is everyone’s responsibility to fix their own ball marks, and while you’re at it, fix a few more. There are always plenty to choose from.

Despite the lake being dry, and despite a red line being applied around the lake for the SCGA Senior last month, the blue line still applies for members and their guests. The lake is an off-limits penalty area, and you may NOT play out of it.

Almost back to normal!

On June 3, the WGA had its first 2021 monthly Guest Day, and 17 foursomes had a great time! Good friends, shotgun start, and lunch together on the Terrace.

Congratulations to Jane Lodas our June Ace Day winner with a net 67! It was a Jane day, Jane Atwater had low putts of 30. 2021 Putting Queens remain Chris Portney and Marjorie Geis with 28 putts.

Wednesday, July 21st The July edition of the regularly scheduled men’s guest-day is scheduled for July 21st. Play will begin with a 12:45 PM shotgun start. There will be two flights; AllMember and Member-Guest with gross and net prizes awarded in each. We assume everyone will have lunch which will be served before the shotgun however if you wish to opt out of lunch, please notify someone in the banquet department. Dinner and awards will take place after golf. Sign up as a foursome or allow the Golf Shop Staff to fill out your groups. Remember, there is a 24-foursome limit to Men’s Member-Guest Stags.

Kouples Kapers

Sunday, July 25th Here is another opportunity for couple’s golf in 2021.

Kouples Kapers are either allmember or member guest affairs where guest fees for guests are waived. Two couples form a team and compete against the field for gross and net prizes. Golf begins with a 1:00 PM shotgun start and is followed by dinner and awards on the terrace.

Women’s Annual Member-Guest

Monday & Tuesday, August 2nd & 3rd This annual event will use a 1:00 PM shotgun start on Monday and an 8:30 AM shotgun on Tuesday. The golf course will not be available on Monday but will be available after 1:30 PM on Tuesday. The practice range will be available as usual on both days.

NINERS GOLF

Greetings Niners!

The Niner golfing fun is in high gear. Everyone was ready to celebrate with the Mad Hatter’s “Tee” Party. The day began with a beautiful breakfast table in the Womens’ Lounge and then off to play in a fun scramble. Just the way we like to play.

Ben Owen came out from the Golf Shop to hit our drives on hole nine and drove the green both left and right handed.

Thanks Ben Amazing!

Lunch and awards were then held on the terrace. Can’t thank the committee enough for the clever tee markers, delightful table decorations and delicious lunch. Thanks Linda Gamble, Jill Winchester and Jan McGuire.

Summer Fun Nine & Dine Off to the next party! Sunday, July 18 th we will gather for “Summer Fun Nine & Dine” playing a “String It Out Scramble”. See the invitation for all the information. Be sure to sign up early because everyone is ready to party and the field fills up quickly.

• Niner Friday morning golf start times can be made online or by calling the Golf Shop. Times are between 8:05 and 8:30 am. Come out and enjoy the golf and a cup of coffee at the Patio Bar & Grill afterwards.

Annetta Patrick We are back to normal! The Fitness Center is open at 100% capacity, with reservations being accepted for classes. Check out the offerings on the “Activities” line on the website, or on the La Cumbre CC app. If you prefer, you can also email fitness@lacumbrecc.org. There are many classes from which to choose.

Two new Woodway treadmills hold pride of place in the gym. Two new Ellipticals will soon be delivered. Old equipment is being offered for sale, or being removed to create a more open and inviting space. The tennis patio will soon be returned to it’s original state, allowing the campers a lunch area without the lure of the equipment.

Just as a reminder, the fitness center has a no guest policy as we want to maintain a safe environment for all our members. Additionally, children under 14 are not allowed in the Fitness Center. Children 14- 18 years of age must go through a Gym safety and etiquette class.

Contact Joel Smith to set something up if you have a child who is interested. Also, please refer to the FC Dress Code- bare torsos or midriffs are not acceptable.

After 48 years of tennis instruction and management, John and Kirsten Kinsella are turning over the reins, and entering a more leisurely chapter of their lives. Their retirement date is Wednesday, September 1st. News on a celebration of their service and friendship will be forthcoming.

Things at the pool are going along swimmingly.

Please be sure to sign in when using the pool, and remember to check in guests. Pool hours during the summer are 7:00am to dusk.

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the PTF Committee who help to keep the activities in these three venues running smoothly: Dr. Frank Katch, Nancy Werner, John Nelson, Marcy Wimbish (secretary), Suzie Swenson, Shelley Fogg, Sheri Copus, Matthew Scribner, John Illgen, Barry Fay, Steve Drummy, and Jennifer Hall.

As restrictions ease, tennis play at La Cumbre CC opens up on all fronts: USTA League, Men's Interclub, Ladies Interclub Scrimmages, Golf/Swim/Tennis Camp, Junior Clinics and Pickleball Mixers.

New members are specially encouraged to contact the tennis shop to find the perfect, comfortable spot to join the tennis activities.

Coming Events Headline event on the ladies circuit is the "New Bag" Round Robin on Wednesday morning July 14.

Featuring an interchanging partner format this event invites ladies from all the interclub levels.

USTA League play in both ladies and mixed doubles dominates weekend play in July. Men's Interclub continues their Thursday evening battles while ladies interclub keeps their Wednesday mornings for scrimmages and round robins.

Angela Maloney took top honors in the season ending ladies interclub "C Team round robin.

Iron-Skillet Peach Crisp Ingredients:

8 SERVINGS

TOPPING 1 cup all-purpose flour 2/3 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces

ASSEMBLY 1 1/2 cups pecans 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 2 1/4 pounds peaches (about 7 medium), cut into 1/2" wedges

1/3 cup light brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon garam masala 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Preparation Topping: Whisk flour, brown sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Rub in butter with your fingers until clumps form and no dry spots remain.

Assembly: Preheat oven to 350°F. Toast pecans on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing once, until slightly darkened in color, 8–10 minutes. Let cool, then coarsely chop.

Smear bottom and sides of a 10" cast-iron skillet with butter. Toss pecans, peaches, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, garam masala, and salt in a large bowl to combine. Transfer to skillet and crumble topping, breaking up into large pieces, over filling.

Bake crisp until topping is golden brown and juices are thick and bubbling around the edges, 25–35 minutes.

Do Ahead Crisp can be made 1 day ahead. Store lightly covered at room temperature.

Monday, June 21st, five fairways were aerated, and all went well. All fairways should be completed by Thursday, June 24th.

All Greens Verti drained with solid tine that penetrates 11in to keep drainage working and add oxygen to the green system.

On the 6th hole, 600 Lin ft of cart path were removed in preparation for the reclaimed water piping project.

We should get up to an additional 600 ft tomorrow.

Tree thinning started on the 6th hole and 16th; the crew will move onto the 8th hole declining pines left of the green tomorrow.

Work to be completed next three days:

• Remove 1400 more Lin footage of cart path on the 6th and 5th holes • Aerate and sand all 18 greens starting tomorrow • Aerate 12 more fairways and pulverize the plugs, plus sweep and clean about 22 Acres • Work on pine tree maintenance on the 8th and 9th holes and place two Oaks to be planted.

• Fertilize all greens and apply wetting agents to fairways • Aerate collars and short grass around green complexes Once again, I appreciate this disruption to the golfing season, but a valuable process to keep the grounds healthy and in good shape. Thank you for your support and understanding.
