President's Annual 2021 Report & 2022 Budget COVID is coming to an end; be it vaccinations, pills, masks, or herd immunity, LCCC has conquered variants, lock downs, staffing and supply shortages, and a great deal of frustration to become even stronger. Our memberships are full. We experienced a relatively small operating loss because of COVID and increased water related costs. Member equity is at an all-time high.

Membership: All categories are full and have waiting lists. To date we have added 79 new members with a record $2.9 million from initiation and transfer fees, as a result we have increased our capital reserves and member equity. The average of the last three equity sales was $212,500.

Golf Course: Wayne’s world continues to stand out above all.

Reclaimed water is in the final phases of testing and governmental approvals. He expanded natives on the 10th and 11th fairways, while accommodating a record number of golf rounds.

The cost of water is up 43% over last year and it is extremely unlikely that rates will be reduced, even if we get substantial rains going forward.

Clubhouse Renovation: We are still sorting all the data and comments.

I want to thank the more than 600 members who have responded (including 347 equity members), for their input and perspectives.

In varying degrees we overwhelmingly agree that our clubhouse needs a lot of help. While Club Insights is still sorting all the data, it is unlikely that the late returns will statistically change the initial flash report. Sixty seven percent agree or strongly agree on the importance of the clubhouse renovation project and another twenty six percent are neutral. On the question of “Has the conceptional information been helpful to understand the scope,” fifty six percent agree or strongly agree, and twenty nine percent are neutral. Still, lots of work to do, and we will keep you posted.

Management: Eric and his team have had to deal with a high level of uncertainty, staffing, and cost issues.

Not only have they helped shepherd us through the year, but we have seen a dramatic upgrade and improved levels of service and staff support in food and beverage, golf, and tennis operations. The financial results for FY 2021 actuals, the operating budget, and dues information for FY 2022 are attached.

Congratulations to Russ Werner as the new President elect for FY 2022.

In closing, I recognize that this has been a very long and frustrating year for all of us. I would especially like to thank all Board members, their committees, Eric, our entire staff, and all our members for the work, encouragement, patience, and support that keeps La Cumbre special.

FY 2022 Operating Budget vs 2021 ($000’s) While there is still a great deal of uncertainty about the economic realities next year, the one thing we are sure of is that our costs for everything from labor to food, supplies, and water are up and expected to continue. This budget forecasts returning to a breakeven operating profit and has been extensively reviewed and unanimously approved by both the Financial Committee and the Board of Directors.

Eric VanderWerff LCCC General Manager Dear La Cumbre Members, The holidays have arrived, and life is starting to look more like things did pre-pandemic. We're close to "normalcy," but not quite there yet. I want to thank the members, staff, and board for all of the support we've had through this challenging year. We have survived another year of shutdowns, staffing issues, and now supply chain demands, yet we still endure.

I am hopeful 2022 will continue to venture positively, and although we will all meet a few bumps along the road, we will also fare better for the journey.

A few things: The annual meeting will again take place virtually this month. Look for an invitation via email soon.

We are now serving lunch in the Clubhouse during these cooler winter months!

I would like to thank the membership for participating in the survey. The results were very informative and we will use those in making decisions as we move forward on clubhouse renovations and service of the club.

An Update From Bo Willis Golf Chairman Greetings Fellow Golfers!

Hope that you all got enough to eat on Thanksgiving. Hard to believe that the Holiday Season is already approaching!

Considering the back log of ships waiting to unload in LA, it might be best to get that online shopping done now or else there might be some empty stockings hanging from mantles on December 25th…

Not a lot to report in golf news aside from the Men’s Stag Day that took place on November 17th. The format was two best balls of foursome and 25 teams participated. In the All Member Flight, the team of Tom Parrish, Mike Westmacott, Mark Manion and Josh Macaluso swept both Gross and Net. There was a tie for second place Net between the team of Barry Gellert, Pat Wheelock, Gary Convis and Don Sabino, and the team of Jim Buttimer, Jason Boyatt, Hod Dunbar, and Zack Kramer. In the Gross competition, second place went to the team of Nick Katzenstein, Ron Lloyd, Barry Waters and Bo Willis. In the Member/Guest Flight, first place Gross went to the team of John Sestak, Brian Realmonte, Toby Chang and Mark Freie, and second place went to the team of Joel Baer, Justin Anderson, Beau Beaver and Brett Greenwood. First place Net went to the team of Dave Prichard, Randy Glick, Scott Weiss and Joe Campanelli, with Sestak, Realmonte, Chang and Freie taking second. Oddly there were no Net Skins won, and the two Gross Skins were won by Tom Parrish with a birdie on #14 and Mike Westmacott with a birdie on #16. Closest to the pins were won by Mark Manion on #5, Barry Waters on #7, and Bill Shapiro on #11. Congrats to all of the winners!

Without question, this has been a tremendous year for the golf program at La Cumbre. We added two excellent Assistant Pro’s in Travis Bregman and Ritter Ganong, and their enthusiasm has already improved the golf experience considerably.

The Los Amigos Member/Member and Chase Member/Guest both drew unprecedented numbers of entries, and were both wildly successful. La Cumbre hosted the SCGA Men’s Senior Championship in May, and the feedback from both players and the SCGA was unanimously very positive. Limiting the number of Men’s Stag Days and number of teams created more consistent demand, and every Stag this year sold out. The Men’s Club Championship also attracted many more entries than in recent years.

It almost goes without saying that the Women’s Golf Association continues to impress with their impeccable organization, as well as their creatively-themed and well-attended events.

Additionally, I can now say from personal experience that this year’s mixed/couples events were also very successful and entertaining, and if you have not tried out one of the themed Nine & Dines with your hostess Karen Carey, I would highly recommend it!

One of my goals for this year was to get members to take more ownership in the Club, and specifically the course, which I tried to do via Divot articles and email communication. I know that I have sounded like a broken record all year, but as I look at the state of affairs now compared to earlier in the year, I think we have made some progress. But I do continue to see cart rules being abused, driving range rules being ignored, bunkers not being raked, ball marks not being fixed, divots not being filled, scraps of trash around the course, and dress code violations galore. I can assure you that you do not see these things at the finer clubs. Let me again remind you that this Club belongs to all of us, it is ALL of our responsibilities to take care of it. If you dropped food on the floor at your home, you would clean it up. The same level of diligence should be applied on the golf course. If our intention is to be a finer club, it will start with members taking responsibility and ownership.

This year’s Golf Committee was also a big success in my book. A very dedicated group of eight thoughtfully took on number of issues, including updating a number of outdated club policies, planning the year’s tournaments, and in my opinion setting a pretty high bar for future Committees. Many, many thanks to this year’s Committee: Nancy Falberg, Chris Portney, Hilary Chapman, David “Taz” Gronsky, Barry Waters, John Sestak, Rick Nightingale, and Mark Lemons. Your time and commitment was greatly appreciated!

And I would like to close with a bit more recognition.

I would first like to thank Evan Colavincenzo for all of his help, wisdom and patience this year. Evan is an encyclopedia of La Cumbre golf history, and you cannot succeed in the future without a incorporating a healthy respect for the past. Much of Evan’s hard work is behind the scenes, and much of it also goes unnoticed. I just want to say that I notice it. I would also like to again thank Communications Director Brooke (Atkins) Boccali for all of her help this year. Brooke worked tirelessly on tournament logos, communications, programs, lining up photographers etc. and this year would not have been the success it was without her.

Thanks also to Eric Vanderwerff. Eric’s creativity, flexibility, and “can do” attitude have been invaluable to the success of all of these golf events.

And finally, I would like to thank Glenn Carter for all of your time and effort on the Los Amigos and Chase over the last few years. Your partnership has been invaluable, and I hope that we can continue to work on these tournaments together for years to come (if they will have us).

MONTHLY REMINDERS: Please remember that there are others playing behind you. Fill in your divots with sand, correctly rake the bunkers, and make sure to leave a smooth playing surface in the bunkers.

Rakes should be placed in bunkers with teeth down and handle resting on the lower lip of the bunker.

It is everyone’s responsibility to fix their own ball marks on the greens. And while you’re at it, fix a few more.

The blue line around Laguna Blanca still applies for members and their guests. The lake is an offlimits penalty area, and you may NOT play out of it.

You are responsible for making sure that you post each and every score, and that it is posted accurately.

November has been a busy month for the Niners. Come celebrate at the December 3 rd Niner Holiday Tournament & Luncheon. A big thank you goes out to Robin Van Buren and her committee for organizing this event.

Another dazzling, over the top, Nine & Dine was held November 7th called “Disco Fever” and the golf tournament was a “Groovy Scramble”. Thanks to Karen Carey and her committee for an amazing event.

AN UPDATE FROM

Wayne’s World Dear La Cumbre Members, I hope everyone is enjoying the fine fall weather. To me, this is the best time of year. As the days are shorter, the Kikuyu is slow-growing and provides the best conditions of all seasons. In addition, the greens firm up, speed up, and less water makes the sand in the bunkers play better too.

Here’s a quick update on the recycled water project and the work to be completed over the next few weeks: We are completing the process of marking the parts of the irrigation system using reclaimed water.

We repaired a cross-connection that existed on the 9th hole.

We changed the mainline plumbing in front of the 1st tee. All irrigation from the chipping practice green to the putting practice green is on domestic potable water only. This will solve any concerns of overspray to the pool or Clubhouse areas.

On November 22nd, the City of Santa Barbara, the health department, and a third-party consultant will review our work to date. They will check all systems at the Clubhouse campus and in the field.

Their review is to confirm all work complies with all regulations before approving deliveries of recycled water via La Cumbre Water Co. I want to share that Lash construction, Landscapes Unlimited, and the La Cumbre Water Co. were great to work with, and with their support, the project went as smoothly as I could have hoped.

Other work to be completed: The area behind the 10th green will be planted with natives and then mulched.

The Goleta Water Co. work behind the 6th green is now complete. This area will also be planted and mulched.

The hillside restoration down to Calle Los Amigos will start in the spring. Until then, it will be covered with plastic and sandbags.

I hope you enjoy the fall before our 30 inches of rain arrives!

Updates from the Court It's been an exciting November on the tennis courts!

The launch of Friday night lights, a doubles event for juniors, was a huge success. It was great to see our younger players on the court getting competitive experience and match play.

We are looking forward to adding more match play opportunities for our growing junior program, giving players a chance to gain match experience.

November was an active one for our pickleball members. We had our monthly pickleball mixer, with the biggest turnout of the year. It was great seeing new and returning players battle it out on the courts.

We loved seeing some of our newer members join in on the fun, and the mix of players led to a very lively and fun event. Coming off that success and the growing popularity of pickleball, we are excited to announce the launch of a new beginner clinic with details to follow.

We have been working hard behind the scenes in the pro shop to ensure a broad mix of brands for all your tennis and holiday gifting needs. We have added new brands, including Vuori, Adidas, and Travis Mathew, and stocking fan favorites, including Straight Down, Sophie Bella, and Lucky in Love. Come by the shop to check out all the new gear, and please let us know what you think!

SCORECARD In their final regular-season match, LCC played against Polo Tennis club. Team captain Mark Mosby and Ted Campbell lead the team with three victories. Unfortunately, we had a forfeit some lines, resulting in an overall 3-6 loss for the team.

After splitting the head-to-head matches, the Supers found themselves matched up against rivals City Rocket Men. It was a tough day for our team falling 2-7; both wins came from the formidable team of Steve Drummy and Jean Tennant. Although we weren't able to advance, it was a great effort from the team, and we are looking forward to watching them improve next season.

Our Phoenix's blew out Polo Tennis club 6-3 in their first match of the month. John Rasmussen and Captain Cliff Wyatt won all three matches while only dropping three games. Rick Fogg and Gunther Baumgartner won 2 matches, and Grover Wilson and Brian Bokman won 1 of their matches to seal the victory. In their 2nd match of the season, the team handily best Las Positas 7-2. Pat McCallister and Gary Klasen won all three sets, winning a nail-biting 3rd set tiebreaker using some clutch their catlike reflexes. The teams of Jim Zmolek/Cliff Wyatt and Mark Mosby/ Rick Fogg clinched two of their three matches to continue the team's good run of form. The team extended their win streak to 3, beating the SB City Rocket men in their final match of a busy month. It was another stellar performance with Pat McCallister/John Rassumen and Cliff Wyatt/Paul Kuhn teams winning 2 of their three matches. Carl Steffens/Rick Belgian swept all three matches. The match was highlighted by a 2-5 0-40 set comeback victory by Wyatt and Kuhn. The next match-up is arch-rival and league leaders Cathedral Oaks. We wish the boys the best of luck as they look to take first place with a victory.

The ladies inter-club A team started the month with a tough assignment against league leaders' Knowlwood Tennis club. They fell short on all four lines but had two competitive matches at lines 2 and 4. Our ladies showed plenty of grit to bounce back against Santa Barbara Tennis Club, winning the 3-1.

Angie Huff/Chelsea Sheffy leads the team at line 1, followed by wins for Erica Downing/ Dianne Wipf and Sharon Goldberg/Karen Suzuki at lines 2 and 3.

Our A2's continued their good run of form by dominating Knowlwood Tennis Club 3-1. Bess Scriber/ Cynthia Frohling, Dawn Bokman/ Kelly Jensenn, and Kathleen Mclychok/Margie Niehaus all won their matches in straight sets, not losing more than three games in any set. The depth and throughout the line-up have shown to be our team's greatest strength. As we enter the second half of the season, the A-2's are looking to make a push for the league title.

La Cumbre B team split a tight home match with Knowlwood Tennis Club 2-2. Wins came from Marsha Roberson/ MJ Baumgartner and Carey Zimmerman/ Marcy Wimbish. Unfortunately, our ladies couldn't close out the match at line 1, resulting in a tie for the visitors.

It was a very successful month for our C team as they remain in a tie for 2nd place in the standings. Angela Maloney/Lauren Brennan, Kandance Illgen, and Jenny Kramer won their respective matches against fellow front runners Santa Barbara Tennis Club, earning a 2-2 split. In their next match the C team found their form and was able to sweep Knowlwood's C team 4-0. This is their 2nd sweep of the season and the team continues to prove to the rest of the league they are challenging for the league title. Cristina Prichard/ Rachil Vincent, Cristy Pugh/Michelle Arntz, and candy Hedrick/Jenny Kramer all had straight-set victories followed by an amazing 3 round set tiebreaker to win for Angela Malone/ Lauren Brennan at line 1.

Tennis Tip One of the most common errors we see as tennis pro’s are students holding the racket too tightly in their hands before and during the point. Try to bring awareness to your grip pressure.

Use the non dominant hand to support and hold the racket in the correct position this will allow you to remove excess tension from the wrist and hitting hand. Having a relaxed wrist and grip will help the racket move faster through the strike zone and allow for quick grip changes as well as taking pressure off the arm resulting in fewer arm injuries.

3. ATTIRE The pool is a family venue - appropriate conservative swimwear is required. Brazilian, thong or other abbreviated swimwear is NOT acceptable.

Cover-ups required arriving or exiting the pool facility and when approaching the patio bar and grill area. Denim must be Club appropriate: no cutoffs, holes, tears.

4. DAMAGES/LCCC POOL PROPERTY Immediately report any damage to pool or spa to staff.

Do NOT remove Club towels/toys from pool area. These items belong to the Club.

5. FOOD/DRINK No outside food or drink is permitted in pool area.

Do NOT take food or drink into pool or spa.

6. HEALTH/SAFETY Do NOT enter the pool/spa if you have a cold, fever, bandages, or infections.

Director of Pool, Tennis and Fitness Dear Members,

You’ve heard the saying, “It takes a Village…”. Well here at La Cumbre, it takes a Committee. They are the unsung heroes, doing creative thinking, and back scenes work behind the curtain.

Here are the names of my stalwart group of volunteers, and I highlight that word because this is an unpaid job, but a necessary one. Please join me in thanking - Marcy Wimbish, Sheri Copus, Frank Katch, John Illgen, Barry Fay, Matt Scribner, Jennifer Hall, Shelley Fogg, Suzie Swenson, Nancy Werner, John Nelson, and Steve Drummy. They, along with our wonderful staff, have helped to keep the machinery that is Pool, Tennis and Fitness in good working order.

On the courts, we have a new team of professionals that have seamlessly stepped into the shoes of John and Kirsten Kinsella. Many thanks to Matt Berry, Aaron Webster, Nance Wheeler, and David Burns. Because of them, Tennis and Pickle Ball are thriving at La Cumbre.

Always dripping wet and wonderful, we are fortunate to have Bobbi Houghton as our Aquatic Director. Bobbi is a fixture at the pool that we could not do without.

Thanks to her and Facilities Manager, Doug McAllister, the pool is kept at a constant temperature, and chemically balanced. Doug is a true Mr Fix It. In the Fitness Center, we are fortunate to have our Personal Trainers- Joel Smith and Curtis Boontz keeping our members in great shape and good health. Chris Wiedmann teaches Tai Chi on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Come give it a try.

And, most recently, we have a brand new Yoga Instructor, Emma Patrick (no relation), also teaching three days a week.

It has been my privilege to work with all of these capable individuals, and they all deserve a round of applause. Many Thanks to each of you, Annetta Patrick Director of Pool, Tennis and Fitness

How to Stay Healthy over the Holidays The holidays are filled with good people, good times, and good food. It’s the time to get snuggled up on the couch under a warm blanket and watch shows or play games with the ones you care about. We want to encourage everyone to do just that, but we also want to address today how you can do all the fun things you love while still managing to stay up on your health goals.

One of the most important things we need to remember to do is to keep moving! It may not be the most exciting proposition to walk out into the winter weather, especially when staying bundled up inside is so much more attractive, but we must get our heart rate up for at least an hour a day. This might mean a short walk during a halftime break, another walk between dinner and dessert, and maybe even a walk in the morning to help wake you up. If the weather is a dealbreaker for you, you can always come on down to the fitness center and get your heart pumping in a more temperate environment. You can even bring a blanket if you’d like!

Another critical element of staying healthy over the holidays is to eat mindfully. Allow yourself ample time between helpings to ensure that more food is a good idea. The last thing you want to do is fill up on potatoes before you’ve even had a go at the pumpkin pie. It takes roughly twenty minutes for the stomach to tell the brain that it has had enough, so give your body some time to relay the message. Unless the green bean casserole is an exceptionally hot commodity, it can wait!

Now, none of these tips will do you much good if you are too sick to make use of them, so we’ll close this out with some ways to keep the germs away this holiday season. For one, wash your hands. The most tried and true method for staving off a cold is to ensure you are not letting the germs overstay their welcome in your biological AirBnB. To help strengthen your immune system, keep up on your fluids (no, eggnog doesn’t count) and Vitamin C intake. Lastly, try not to stress.

Unwanted stress degrades your immune system and makes it harder for it to do its job. You may otherwise be an ideal physical specimen. Still, if you’re expending all of your energy worrying about this and that, your body will have no energy left to fight off invaders.

If we’re being honest, staying strict with our healthy regime over the holidays is not going to be possible nor appealing.

We want to make good choices so we can afford a few less-than-good choices when the time arises. Hopefully, some of the tips here can help guide you through the next few weeks. Happy holidays from the fitness center!

WINE OF THE MONTH Berlucchi NV Franciacorta Brut Cuvée

LOMBARDY, ITALY

SUGAR COOKIES YIELD: about 3 dozen-2 1/2 inch

Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 egg, beaten 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon milk 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

How to Make it Step 1 - Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl.

Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Step 2 - Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Step 3 - Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from refrigerator at a time, sprinkle rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. Cut into desired shape, place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat, and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.
