Welcome to Mean Girls High School Version, a vibrant production brought to you through the summer partnership between The School District of La Crosse and La Crosse Community Theatre’s Star Academy. We are thrilled to have you join us for this special performance that not only entertains but also offers profound lessons and reflections that align with our mission and vision at La Crosse Community Theatre (LCT).
At LCT, our mission is to honor and celebrate our rich theatrical heritage while establishing a sustainable foundation for the future. We emphasize collaboration, dynamic educational opportunities, and visionary approaches to shape the destiny of our community. Our vision extends this commitment by aspiring to be a model for community theatre, promoting accountability, unity, and creativity in a welcoming space that reflects the diversity and strength of our community.
Mean Girls High School Version perfectly encapsulates these values through its engaging narrative and poignant themes. The journey of Cady Heron as she navigates the complexities of high school life mirrors the personal growth and self-discovery that we aim to foster in our educational programs. Just as Cady learns about identity, true friendship, and self-respect, we strive to create an environment where our participants can explore these concepts and grow both personally and creatively.
The musical's exploration of popularity, social hierarchies, and the impacts of bullying and peer pressure resonates deeply with our commitment to inclusivity and support. At LCT, we work to provide a space where everyone feels valued and empowered, countering the divisive nature of cliques and promoting genuine connections and respect among our participants.
Furthermore, the themes of forgiveness and redemption in Mean Girls align with our vision of fostering a community where individuals can learn from their mistakes, seek redemption, and continue to grow. Our programs are designed to educate and inspire, offering opportunities for participants to develop their skills and self-confidence in a fun, collaborative environment.
And let's be honest, who among us hasn't had a Regina George in their life? Perhaps you didn't have to face her in the hallways of North Shore High, but if you've ever had a boss, a neighbor, or even a particularly demanding cat, you know the type.
This production, presented by the talented youth from the greater La Crosse Area, exemplifies the synergy between our mission and the impactful storytelling of Mean Girls High School Version. It is a testament to the powerful role theatre plays in educating, entertaining, and uniting our community.
Thank you for your support and for joining us in celebrating the achievements of our young performers. We hope you enjoy the show and leave inspired by the messages of empowerment, self-discovery, and the enduring value of true friendship.
Warm regards,
ERIK VOSE Executive Director
When I started to delve into Mean Girls High School Version this spring, it brought back a whirlwind of high school memories, social dynamics, and the ever-present battle between authenticity and pretense. These themes resonate deeply with me, particularly, because of my own journey through adolescence.
The movie "Mean Girls" was released in the spring of 2004, just as I was about to start high school that fall. The timing was serendipitous; as I stepped into a new and intimidating world, the story of Cady Heron navigating North Shore High mirrored my own experiences. My life took a dramatic turn two weeks into my pre-freshman year when Hurricane Katrina struck my hometown, New Orleans, upending everything I knew. I found myself in a much larger school in Texas away from my home, struggling to make friends and grappling with the social pressures that come with being the new kid.
When I moved back to New Orleans six months later to restart my high school experience, I still faced bullying from both peers and teachers, even though I was considered a "jock". It was easy to build a plastic facade, a survival mechanism that ultimately made me feel even less like myself. The constant pressure to fit in, to be accepted, was overwhelming.
It wasn't until I joined the theatre during my sophomore year that I found my true “flock.” Theatre became a home where I could be my authentic self, surrounded by others who celebrated individuality. It was in those moments on stage, in rehearsal, and backstage, embodying characters and exploring stories, that I felt truly seen and accepted.
As a theatre educator, I believe deeply in the power of theatre to explore the human condition and foster empathy. Mean Girls High School Version, with its PG-13 content, provides an invaluable opportunity for students to engage with characters who are close in age and experience. The show doesn't shy away from the social messiness of high school—it confronts it head-on, offering lessons on resilience, accountability, and the importance of finding one's tribe.
I don't condone the actions of the "mean girls" in the show, nor do I want anyone to emulate them. Instead, I encourage us to learn from their mistakes. The beauty of this musical lies in its ability to hold up a mirror to our own behaviors and challenge us to be better. It emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where everyone can be successful and celebrated, highlighting the incredible potential of today's youth to be smart, outspoken, and engaged.
Through this production, I hope we can all take the lessons from the characters and leave the characters on stage. Let us embrace authenticity over plasticity, resilience over insecurity, and community over isolation. Just as I found my true self and my tribe through theatre, I hope Mean Girls High School Version inspires our students to find their own paths, their chosen people, and celebrate their unique gifts.
More isn't always better—especially when you lose yourself in the process. Choose to "Rather Be Me," and in doing so, you will find the people who truly appreciate you for who you are.
Cast, it has been a pleasure working with all of you. I am so grateful to work with each and every one of you. You have made this process a joy to work on, and this show has become one of my favorites because of you. You are a special, talented, and hardworking group. Thank you for auditioning, and I cannot wait for audiences to see the spectacular show you've brought to life. Enjoy these performances, leave it all on stage, and have fun.
Production Team & Crew, you've been incredible. Thanks for diving into my wild imagination to bring the environment to life. I am grateful for all your hard work, time, and creativity to tell this story. I think this will be one of the best productions that I've directed, and you are the bulk of the creation of this show.
Thank you.
Truly,
Alex Attardo, Director
