What Is A Hearing Loop?

Hearing Loops allow people who wear hearing aids to directly receive the sound from the theatre’s sound system in their own hearing aids, much like Wi-Fi for laptops. If you wear hearing instruments, and they have a wireless receiver called a T-coil or Telecoil built-in, you will benefit from the hearing loop in our theatre. The T-coil program is accessed by pushing a button on your hearing aid. This T-coil setting has to be activated before use. Please consult your audiologist to ensure your t-coils are properly adjusted.

If you do not have a T-coil equipped hearing instrument, please feel free to stop by the box office to pick up a hearing assist device.

UFAH enhances the cultural life of the area by encouraging and providing opportunities for businesses to invest in the programs of local Arts and Humanities organizations in an efficient and effective way.

About The Enduring Families Project

The Enduring Families Project is an inter-woven two-part venture exploring the local history of African-Americans and other non-white settlers. The two arms include a public school-based educational program and community-based historical reenactments. The Project is under the fiscal sponsorship of the La Crosse County Historical Society.

The goals of the Enduring Families Project are to build a more cohesive multicultural community through an inclusive history, to provide venues for community discussions and to create opportunities for direct interactions between the diverse peoples of La Crosse.

The Enduring Families Project, or EFP, started out with the dream of two retired Milwaukee public high school teachers, Denise Christy Moss and Rebecca MormannKrieger, to create public theater based on the stories of early African-American settlers to La Crosse County and Cheyenne Valley to our south. They developed a mission statement: “to substantially broaden the local historical narrative by the positive portrayal of the contributions, struggles, and perseverance of early non-white settlers, providing a venue for the development of understanding and respect between people in our community and a further springboard for community conversations.”

Since the summer of 2018, they have performed skits in public schools and for various organizations that tell stories of African-Americans living in this region since the early days of Prairie La Crosse. All of their actors are African-Americans who live and work locally, and who believe in the mission of the project and are excited to be bringing this history to life. Some of the characters they portray, like Olympic medalist George Poage, are fairly well-known, while others who were once important community members have been largely forgotten. All are a part of the web of local history.

A Note from the Historian

The Enduring Families Project emerged from another project created with students at Milwaukee High School of the Arts for the Wisconsin Subsequential in 1989. “Arts” had a large female population, yet when plays were selected and cast few girls had an opportunity to be on stage.

I wrote a Sesquicentennial grant, and it was awarded. Mission and goal were to research and produce monologues about Wisconsin history, from the woman’s perspective. It was a two-year process of writing and rewriting with the cast. The grant money allowed professional writers, musicians, and artists to assist students in creating their diverse pieces. In the end we had a three hour show of song, dance, drama and comedy. All Wisconsin history, mostly women, from pre-contact to modern times.

History of Wisconsin in Spoon River was historical fiction based heavily on facts. In many ways it is the same with The Enduring Families Project, however, with EFP we have the advantage knowing some of the families in the play. In other cases, we relied heavily on the research of Dr. Bruce Mouser’s work, Black La Crosse, Wisconsin 1860 to 1906, housed at UW-L Murphy Library, Special Collections and Race, Labor, and Liberty George Edwin Traylor, His Historical Race of the White House…

The story that rose out of Spoon River was about Cheyenne Valley. We wrote a few character pieces from the Valley. I asked Denise Christy to have her husband, John Moss, to look at them for authenticity. They were written a bit “back woods in dialect” and wanted to make sure it didn’t sound comical. We wanted it to ring realistic to the ear. When John read the material, he said “These are my relatives.” Not only in language, but also literally. John Moss’s mother is Ellen Revels Walden. The two families are original families to settle the triracial valley. Coming first from Georgia Cherokee reservation lands, then to North Carolina and Indiana, then finally settling in Wisconsin.

It took me six months trailing the history of Cheyenne Valley back to Geogia. It was not easy. It was like picking up sticks on the forest floor. It seems easier today. More people are doing the research. It’s like once it been rousted out, more people are searching. Its nice meeting people in the search.

Why these characters for the play? They are the “Swells” in La Crosse. They were the Community Builders and cared to make a difference in the lives of the people around them. They were “Swell” people.

p. 7

The Company

Denise Christy (Anna Page/Producer) I am a retired Milwaukee Public School Teacher. I taught English, Speech and Theatre for 23 years at Milwaukee HS of the Arts, an arts magnate school. After retirement, I was fortunate to become a part of various community events in La Crosse, such as Juneteenth Day, and our own August Ball. I've also enjoyed being a part of the UWL Choral Union, Coulee Region Gospel Choir, and, of course, the Enduring Families Project. Because of this project, we've been fortunate and privileged to be able to tell these stories of 19th Century La Crosse residents. The experience has been very informative, and eyeopening. Many lifelong La Crosse citizens have said many times, that they never knew about this segment of local Black La Crosse History. It's rewarding to know this project is shining a light and informing the community about information that will last through future generations.

Kat Sletten (Birletta Waldon Loving/ Lillian Smith Davenport)

It's good to be back La Crosse! While I have been doing plays since I was 8 years old this is only my second time doing a play with the La Crosse Community Theatre. I'm excited to take the stage once again after having such a great time as Camae in The Mountain Top. I would like to thank Denise for all the hard work she has done to keep these stories alive and for thinking of me for this fantastic opportunity. I would also like to thank my family (Adam, Nadia, Ember, and Autumn) for all their support during practices. Break a leg everyone!

Izzy Bryant (Ashley Shivers) I'm Izzy Bryant. It's an honor and a privilege to play this role and be a part of this project. I really enjoy it. It has taught me a lot about black history in La Crosse. I enjoy meeting new people through the play. It has taught me a lot about opening up and expressing myself in different ways. I also enjoyed being a part of the Enduring Families Video Project. Putting on the makeup and dressing up as a character. It was nice having children from the area playing the part of my children. It was such a joy playing that part. It was truly a love. When I first did this role, I was very nervous and was looking for ways to be more comfortable. I found a way to push through and I feel I've done it successfully and I love the reactions to the way I perform. The compliments about my voice make me smile... a lot.

Chey Clark (Elizabeth Burt) Hello LCT this is Chey Clark. Thank you to the community for taking the time to see this show. This is the 4th show that I have been in at LCT and I hope to continue to do more. When I’m not acting I teach prek and love spending time outside with my nephew Kaeden. Thank you for being here today and enjoy the show.

Welcome to La Crosse Community Theatre’s Staged Reading Series! It is my pleasure to introduce a special production that truly embodies the spirit of our community and the power of local storytelling.

When we embarked on the journey of curating our Staged Reading Series, we were passionate about including works that resonate deeply with our audience. We sought stories that not only entertain but also educate and inspire. In our quest for such narratives, we discovered the remarkable work being done by The Enduring Families Project (EFP). Their dedication to uncovering and sharing the rich, often overlooked history of La Crosse from diverse perspectives made them an ideal partner for this series.

The Enduring Families Project brings to life the untold stories of African American families who have contributed significantly to the cultural and historical tapestry of our region. Through meticulous research and heartfelt storytelling, EFP highlights voices and experiences that have long been marginalized. This collaboration allows us to present a facet of La Crosse's history that most people have never had the opportunity to hear before.

At La Crosse Community Theatre, we believe in the power of theatre to not only entertain but also to foster understanding and connection within our community. We are immensely proud to support The Enduring Families Project in their mission. By showcasing these vital stories on our stage, we hope to broaden perspectives and deepen appreciation for the diverse history that shapes our community.

As we present this production, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved—our talented performers, dedicated crew, and of course, the passionate team at EFP. Their hard work and commitment have made this collaboration a reality.

Importantly, all proceeds from tonight’s performance will go directly to The Enduring Families Project, supporting their continued efforts to uncover and share the stories that enrich our collective heritage.

Thank you for joining us for this special evening. Your support helps us bring these essential stories to light, ensuring they endure for future generations. Enjoy the performance! A Note from the Executive Director
