Skill Guide for Swim Lessons

The following is a guideline for enrolling your child in swim lessons -

Little Mates

Little Mates is held in the zero-depth portion of the pool. This is a perfect transition from parent/tot lessons and Level 1 swim lessons. Perfect for a three or four year old.

Level 1 This is for the swimmer who is at the very beginning, is not comfortable in the water and probably the first or second time enrolled in lessons.

Level 2 Comfortable with face under water and being on their own in shallow water

Level 3 Knows reach, pull, front crawl, and backstroke

Level 4 Knows front/back crawl and elementary backstroke

Level 5 Knows all strokes listed Level 4 and sidestroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Level 6 Knows all strokes. Focus on distance, endurance, and finetuning stroke mechanics

Five 2-week sessions are offered for children 5 years old and up. Little Mates and Level 1 swimmers may be younger. Classes are limited in number and last 40 minutes. Classes are offered by certified instructors. Due to limited space in the pool, we request you sign up for a maximum of 3 of 5 sessions. The requirement for each class is eight lessons. If one or two class sessions are cancelled due to weather, they will not be made up. Swimming

See page 17 for Early Childhood’s Parent & Tot Swim classes!

Welcome to Community Education’s 2023 Summer Youth Programs!

Enjoy reading through this catalog to find youth enrichment activities in the arts, STEM areas, sports, and more!

We are very saddened to be saying goodbye (for now) to our beloved, long-time gymnastics program. Our equipment has gone to reside at PEG on French Island, where our varsity gymnasts now practice and compete. We will have the opportunity to host a camp there in the future. We are also saying goodbye to our long-time coaches Haley Osborne and Jordan Peterson. We thank them and ALL of our past youth gymnastics staff for their dedication to the program! We hope to be able to find new leadership to bring this great program back in Summer 2024!

Parents, we didn’t forget you! Our traditional Summer Community Education catalog with adult, family, and youth enrichment classes will be mailed in May! Be on the lookout for more family-friendly class opportunities in that catalog!

What “grade” does Community Ed consider kids to be in during the summer?

Please note that your child is considered to be in the grade that they are ENTERING in the fall of 2023. For example, if your child just completed 2nd grade, they are now considered a 3rd grader for Community Ed summer programs.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students who qualify for the school district free and reduced lunch program. We offer a 75% reduction for those who qualify for free lunch and a 50% reduction for anyone qualifying for the reduced lunch program. There are some exceptions to this policy.
