12 Lacey Parks, Culture and Recreation Playbook Fall 2022 Hikes Sheep Lake 3.6 Miles, Elevation Gain 400 ft. (18+ yrs) Sheep Lake is a picturesque alpine lake guarded by jagged-edged ridges. The hike to Sheep Lake is a 1.8-mile, gentle climb on a good trail. The first mile traverses a steep slope above Highway 410. The hillside is decorated with wildflowers in the summer and red huckleberry plants in the fall. Although the trail dips in and out through pockets of trees, the views are quite good. You can get a bird’s eye view of the deep valley of the Rainier fork of the American River. You will also be treated to glimpses of Mt. Rainier and Naches Peak. Sheep Lake is a green gem that pops into view as you near it. You may hear people playing in the water or see hikers lazing on the rock outcropping where the trail comes to the lake. This outcropping is the perfect place to take a break, while the nearby beach may tempt you to take off your boots and wade in the crystalline water.

Tenneriffe Falls 5.6 miles roundtrip, Elevation Gain 1585 ft. (18+ yrs) The hike follows the gently inclining Mount Teneriffe trail for nearly a mile to an intersection signed for Teneriffe Falls. The route remains mellow, gaining only 375 feet in the first mile. But if you’re looking for a workout, don’t worry, you’ll still get it. Over the last 0.9 miles, you’ll gain 850 feet. The 22 switchbacks up to the base of the falls wind in and out of tree cover. Enjoy the second- and third-growth forest you’re walking through and the sounds and sights of the nearby stream flowing from Teneriffe Falls. As you near the end of the trail, you’ll get a view of the lower part of Teneriffe Falls. Snap a photo, and then continue up the last couple switchbacks to a viewpoint for the upper falls.

Big Creek Hike 4.5 miles , Elevation Gain 900 ft (18+ yrs) We will head north to the Olympic Peninsula for this forested, moderate 4.5-mile hike. Always within earshot of tumbling water, we will hike clockwise and cross over a bridge spanning Big Creek above a gorgeous cascade. After 1 mile the grade gets steeper. Mount Washington hovering above can occasionally be seen through gaps in the forest canopy. At 1.7 miles we’ll come to a junction. We can continue straight on the loop, or take an interesting side trip dropping to the confluence of Big and Branch Creeks.
