DEAR GUEST Welcome to the 9th edition of WINK magazine, your Pestana Hotel Group travel guide!

This ninth edition, a corollary of the experience of previous editions, is marked by the symbolism of the number nine itself. It’s the first edition to present our new brand, fruit of a total rebranding of the Pestana Hotel Group. Now our hotel units are classified as Pestana Hotels & Resorts, Pestana Pousadas de Portugal or Pestana Collection Hotels.

We believe that this new positioning and image is yet another step on our long road ahead and a turning point in the history of the largest Portuguese hotel group. We therefore decided to highlight some of the projects that are a proof of this innovation.

The fantastic city of Lisbon was the destination chosen to reinforce our philosophy with yet another strong bet: "Pousada de Lisboa".

Located at Praça do Comércio, one of the capital’s main tourism sights and a historic site of unmatched importance, the Pousada de Lisboa - Pestana Monument Hotel, is an extraordinary restoration of the imposing building that once housed the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and even a police station. This way, we believe that we are contributing to the revitalization of the Lisbon Baixa district with a project that further dignifies that which is our greatest square.

From Praça do Comércio we admire the beautiful Tagus River and are confronted with all the magnificence of the Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge.

This helps us with fast transport to the Tróia Peninsula where we can find another good example of our expansion and which is also featured in this edition: the "Tróia Eco Resort". Between Arrábida, the Sado and the Atlantic, this innovative project is a prime example of the best of the best which is being done in the field of sustainability as it is integrated in the Natural Reserve of the Sado estuary and the Botanical Reserve of the Tróia dunes. Subject of numerous awards and honours in this field, the Tróia Eco Resort gives you the opportunity to enjoy one of the world's best beaches, supported by the most modern tourism infrastructures.

As is only to be expected and similar to what occurs at the Pestana Hotel Group, this edition also features international proposals celebrating our presence on African soil. Esta nona edição, corolário da experiência das anteriores edições, vem marcada pelo simbolismo próprio do número que a distingue. É a primeira edição a apresentar a nossa nova marca, fruto de um rebranding total do Grupo Pestana e das nossas unidades, que agora se dividem em Pestana Hotels & Resorts, Pestana Pousadas de Portugal e Pestana Collection Hotels. Acreditamos que este novo posicionamento e imagem é mais um passo no nosso longo caminho e um momento de viragem na história do maior Grupo Hoteleiro Português. Decidimos, por isso e nesta edição tão especial, dar destaque a alguns projectos que são prova dessa mesma inovação.

A voz de Mayra é um baile de tons radiantes, dançantes, batidas aveludadas e melodias apimentadas. As canções invocam um verão eterno que dispensa névoas e arrepios, mas que nunca recorre ao brilho fácil do exotismo. Cantadas em crioulo cabo-vediano, inglês, francês e português, as suas canções transportam-nos na sua imprevisibilidade quente e aventureira.

Mayra Andrade é filha da ilha de Santiago, onde os estilos musicais são mais africanos. O funaná e o batuque foram proibidos pela elite colonial e, como tal, permaneceram nos ambientes rurais até à independencia, altura em que estes estilos invadem as cidades.

Mayra é apaixonada por estes ritmos.

A história de vida de Mayra é um romance. O seu pai foi combatente na luta pela independência de Cabo-Verde, uma luta apoiada por Cuba. Por razões médicas, a mãe ainda grávida partiu para ter a filha no país “irmão”. Mayra nasceu em Havana, mas partiu logo para a cidade da Praia, em Cabo Verde, onde começaria a sua coleção de memórias. Aos 6 anos de idade, a carreira de diplomata do padrasto leva-a a viver no Senegal, Angola e Alemanha. Quando regressou a Cabo Verde, aos 14 anos, começou a cantar em público e passados dois anos venceu os Jogos da Francofonia no Canadá, uma vitória que Mayra vê como a ponte que a levou do sonho à realidade. Um ano depois, em 2002, instala-se em Paris, onde vive até hoje.

Em 2006 lançou o primeiro álbum, “Navega”, uma produção marcada pelas raízes e gravada acusticamente a um ritmo de três canções por dia. O seu quarto e último trabalho, editado em 2013, chama-se “Lovely Difficult”, a alcunha que uma antiga paixão lhe atribuiu. Atualmente com 30 anos, Mayra está na estrada com este seu último trabalho e em Novembro passa por Portugal.

Mayra’s voice is a waltz of radiant, dancing tones, velvety beats and spicy melodies. Her songs invoke an eternal summer that dispenses mist and shivers but never resorts to the easy brightness of exoticism.

Sung in Cape Verdean Creole, English, French and Portuguese, her songs transport us with their hot and adventurous unpredictability.

Mayra Andrade is the daughter of Santiago Island, where musical styles are more African. The “funaná” and drumming were banned by the colonial elite and therefore they remained in the rural environments until independence, when these styles invaded the cities. Mayra is in love with these rhythms.

Mayra's life story is a romance. Her father was a combatant in the fight for the independence of Cape Verde, a struggle supported by Cuba. For health reasons, when her mother was pregnant, she went to give birth to her daughter in a "brother country". Mayra was born in Havana but left soon after for the city of Praia, Cape Verde, where she was to start her collection of memories. At the age of 6, her stepfather’s diplomatic career took her to live in Senegal, Angola and Germany.

When she returned to Cape Verde, the 14- year-old started singing in public and two years later won the Francophone Games in Canada, a victory that Mayra sees as the bridge that made her dream a reality.

A year later, in 2002, she settled in Paris, where she continues to live.

In 2006 she released her first album "Navega", a production marked by her roots and recorded acoustically, at a rate of three songs a day. Her fourth and latest work, edited in 2013, is called "Lovely Difficult", the nickname that an old flame gave her. Now, aged 30, Mayra is on the road with this, her latest work, she’ll be passing through Portugal in November.

Where are you at the moment?

In Paris, on a plane, ready to take off to São Paulo.

E chegaste de onde?

Hoje de manhã regressei de Nîmes, no sul da França, onde demos um espectáculo ontem.

Where have you come from?

This morning I got back from Nimes, in the south of France, where we did a show yesterday.

Qual é a primeira coisa que fazes quando entras num quarto de hotel?

Retiro a colcha, que costuma estar em cima da cama, ponho a toalhinha no chão da casa de banho (gosto de andar descalça), fecho as cortinas e tento descansar antes de fazer o ensaio de som.

What’s the first thing you do when you reach a hotel room?

I remove the bed cover that’s usually on the bed, I put the small towel on the bathroom floor (I like walking barefoot) and I close the curtains to try to get some rest before the sound check.

Do you have any rituals?

None apart from those (laughter).

Tens algum ritual?

Fora tudo isso, não (risos).

What do you do to make yourself feel at home?

I undress and put on some warm socks!

E o que é que fazes para te sentir em casa?

Tiro a roupa e ponho umas meias quentes!

Quantos passaportes tens?

Uns quantos, trabalho com o James Bond!

How many passports do you have?

A few, I work with James Bond!

Onde foi a tua primeira viagem?

Para Cuba, num avião militar russo, na barriga da minha mãe. Nasci em Havana por razões médicas e regressei para Cabo-Verde um mês depois. Na minha infância, saber que eu tinha nascido numa ilha do outro lado do oceano fazia-me sentir especial e alimentava o meu imaginário.

Where was your first trip to?

To Cuba, on a Russian military plane, in my mother’s tummy. I was born in Havana for medical reasons and returned to Cape Verde a month later. As a child, knowing that I was born on an island on the other side of the ocean made me feel special and fed my imagination.

Onde é que foram as tuas primeiras férias sem os teus pais?

Aos 14 anos durante o festival Baía das Gatas, em São Vicente (Cabo Verde). Durante o festival as pessoas acampam na praia e há música ao vivo o dia todo. É um ambiente mágico e um sabor a liberdade inesquecível para a adolescente que eu era.

Where did you spend your first holidays with your parents?

At the age of 14 at the Baía de Gatas festival in São Vincente (Cape Verde). During the festival people camp on the beach and there’s live music all day, It’s a magic atmosphere and a taste of unforgettable freedom for a teenager, as I was at the time.

Quando fazes a mala, o que é que guardas antes de tudo?

A roupa de palco. Uma vez esqueci-me do meu traje e o resultado foi dramático (risos).

When you pack, what’s the first thing you put in your suitcase?

My stage outfit. Once I forgot it and it was a drama (laughter).

Descreve-nos umas férias irremediavelmente estragadas.

Três dias numa estação balnear cheios de festa com o meu namorado da época. Sem perceber bem porquê, brigámos tanto naqueles dias que, de regresso a Paris, terminámos o namoro na estação de comboio!

Describe a holiday that was irremeably spoilt.

Three days at a seaside resort, with loads of parties, with my boyfriend at the time. Without knowing why, we argued so much whilst we were there that, back in Paris we ended the relationship at the train station!

Como é que viajar afecta a tua vida?

Viajo o ano todo e a minha vida organiza-se em função disso, no entanto há períodos em que preciso de estar em casa, de ter uma rotina, de reencontrar o meu “chão”.

How has travelling affected your life?

I travel throughout the year and my life is organised accordingly.

There are times, however, when I need to be at home, have a routine, and feel grounded.

Lembras-te de algum coisa valiosa que tenhas deixado esquecida num quarto de hotel?

Uma vez deixei umas jóias no cofre do hotel, mas o pior foi ter-me esquecido do Perrucho, uma carneirinho de peluche que adoptei há uns anos. O pessoal do hotel encontrou-o embrulhado nos lençóis e ainda conseguiram fazê-lo chegar a mim antes de eu entrar no avião! Desde então decidi que era melhor o Perrucho ficar em casa.

Can you remember ever forgetting something valuable in a hotel room?

Once I left some jewellery in the hotel safe but what was worse, was forgetting Perrucho, a lamb soft toy that I adopted a few years ago. The hotel staff found it wrapped in the sheets and managed to get him back to me before I boarded the plane! Since then I have decided that it’s best to leave Perrucho at home.

No mundo inteiro, onde é que te sentiste mais feliz?

Numa das viagens que fiz a Cuba, na Sierra Maestra, a primeira vez que vi uma cascata de água! Foi um sentimento inesquecível. Pertencer a um país tão seco como Cabo Verde deixa as suas marcas no coração.

Of all the places in the world, where have you felt happiest?

On one of the trips I made to Cuba, in Sierra Maestra, it was the first time I saw a waterfall! It was a memorable experience.

Coming from a country as dry as Cape Verde does leave its marks on your heart.

Qual é a tua cidade preferida?

Cada cidade tem os seus encantos, os seus mistérios, não é fácil escolher. Gosto de Istanbul, de Havana, São Francisco, Barcelona, Tepoztlan, mas devo confessar que, nos últimos anos, Lisboa conquistou um lugar especial em mim.

What’s your favourite city?

Every city has its charm, its mysteries, it’s difficult to choose. I like Istanbul, Havana, San Francisco, Barcelona and Tepoztlan but I must confess that in recent years, Lisbon has conquered a special place in my heart.

Why’s that?

There’s sun, sea and rivers, extraordinary scenic beauty, narrow alleys and little nooks and crannies, the food is (so) good and its people are warm.

E porquê?

Há sol, há mar e rio, há paisagens extraordinárias, ruelas e recantos, come-se (tão) bem e a sua gente é calorosa.

Qual é o teu destino de férias favorito?

Ainda tenho muitos lugares para descobrir. Adorava passar umas férias de sonho na Tailândia.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I still have so much to discover. I would love to spend a dream holiday in Thailand.

Qual é o teu caminho mais percorrido?

Paris/ Praia/Paris.

What route do you travel most?

Paris/ Praia/Paris.

Descreve-nos a paisagem mais bonita de que te lembras.

Até hoje tive a sorte de poder contemplar muitas paisagens extraordinárias, mas a mais bela é, sem dúvida, aquela em que vejo reunida a minha família e as pessoas que amo.

Describe the most beautiful landscape that you can remember.

I’ve been lucky enough to have seen many extraordinary landscapes but the most beautiful one is, without any doubt, the one I can see when I’m with my family and the people I love.

“Bem-vindo a casa”. Não se admire, se escutar estas palavras quando pisar o chão africano da Cidade da Praia. Para os habitantes locais, todos os que visitam a sua terra são como novos membros da família: uma imensa e calorosa família, que não estranha novos idiomas.

A capital de Cabo Verde veste-se de cores quentes e tem a autenticidade como maior riqueza. É o que é: uma cidade onde diferentes nacionalidades se cruzam, onde se sente o pulsar da Democracia, com uma gastronomia de fazer água na boca e onde há muito mais para descobrir do que se possa imaginar. A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, o Palácio Presidencial, o Museu Etnográfico e a Antiga Câmara Municipal, são alguns dos monumentos que merecem uma visita. No seu diário de bordo, acrescente a passagem pelos miradouros Diogo Gomes e Cruz do Papa, e aprecie neste último a vista única sobre a praia de Quebra Canela.

Localizada a sul da Ilha de Santiago, a Cidade da Praia é o ponto de partida para uma experiência única, que só fica completa depois de timbrar no passaporte a passagem por algumas das dez ilhas de Cabo Verde. Decore estes nomes: Sal, Boavista, São Vicente e, claro, Santiago.

A Ilha de Santiago é a maior do arquipélago e aquela onde começou o povoamento do território. Dos pontos de interesse a visitar, destacam-se a Cidade Velha da Ribeira Grande de Santiago e a Praia de São Francisco, com um areal a perder de vista. No extremo norte da ilha, surpreendase com a Praia do Tarrafal: uma das poucas praias de areia branca de Santiago, onde os visitantes são conquistados também pelo estômago, já que é conhecida pela abundância de peixe, lagosta e perceves.

"Welcome home". Don't be surprised if you hear these word when you step on the African soil of Cidade da Praia. For the locals, anyone who visits their land becomes new members of the family: a huge, warm family that is no stranger to new languages.

Cape Verde's capital dresses in warm colours and authenticity is its greatest wealth. It is what it is: a city where different nationalities meet, where one feels the pulse of Democracy, with a mouth-watering cuisine and where there is a lot more to discover that you could ever possibly imagine. The Nossa Senhora da Graça church, the Presidential Palace, the Ethnographic Museum and the former Town Hall are just a few of the monuments well worth visiting. Add to your log-book, a visit to the Diogo Gomes and Cruz do Papa look-out points and at the latter, marvel at the unique view of Quebra Canela beach.

Located south of Santiago Island, Cidade da Praia is the set off point for a unique experience, which will only be complete after stamping your passport with a visit to some of the ten Cape Verdean islands, Remember these names: Sal, Boavista, São e Vicente and of course , Santiago.

Santiago Island is the archipelago’s largest and is where the territories' settlement began. Among the sites worth visiting, of particular interest are Cidade Velha in Ribeira Grande de Santiago and São Francisco beach, with an endless stretch of sand. At the extreme north of the island, you’ll be amazed by Tarrafal beach, one of the few of white sands in Santiago where visitors are also seduced by the cuisine as it is well-known for its abundance of fish, lobster and goose neck barnacles.

Meeting José Veiga is inevitable! Everyone talks about him, Cidade da Praia's young entrepreneur and his dream house, a never-ending work of modern, minimalistic and eastern-inspired style. Our curiosity is immediately awakened and from there to actually meeting him, takes no time at all. A relaxed man in his forties, of genuine simplicity, who drives the jeep with incredible dexterity along the curved, rocky and steep roads that lead us to his famous dream house.

Nasci nos EUA, vim para aqui com 5 ou 6 anos nas vésperas da Independência. O meu pai quis voltar. Depois, aos 13 anos, fui para Lisboa estudar no Liceu Rainha D. Amélia, durante 2 ou 3 anos, e depois fui de novo para os EUA, S. Francisco, Califórnia, onde terminei o Liceu. Ainda fiz um ano na Universidade lá, depois mudei-me para o Arizona. Só voltei aqui depois de me ter formado, em 92.

Have you always lived here?

I was born in the USA and came here when I was 5 or 6, just before the Independence. My parents wanted to come back.

Later, when I was 13, I went to Lisbon to study at the Rainha D. Amélia secondary school and then I went back to the USA, San Francisco, California, where I finished school. I went to university there for a year and then moved to Arizona. I didn't come back here until I graduated in ‘92.

Em Economia.

What did you graduate in?

In Economics.

E a partir daí escolheste Cabo Verde, "Cidade da Praia", para tua base, porquê?

O meu pai tinha um negócio familiar e viemos para cá os 3 irmãos para trabalharmos com ele e renovarmos um bocado o negócio (o meu irmão é aqui Cônsul Honorário da Noruega). Tínhamos um terminal de cimento a granel, aonde ensacávamos e vendíamos para todas as ilhas, mas em 2005 vendemos o negócio à Cimpor. Continuámos a trabalhar e a comercializar materiais de construção e agora estamos um "bocadinho" no imobiliário. Há muito por fazer aqui, mas agrada-me muito a autenticidade desta ilha.

From then on you chose Cape Verde, Cidade da Praia, as your base, why?

My father ... and we, the 3 siblings, came here to work with him and update the business a little (my brother is the Honorary Consul for Norway here). We had a bulk cement terminal where we packaged and sold cement to all of the islands, but in 2005 we sold this business to Cimpor. We still commercialize and work with construction materials and are now getting into Real Estate.

There's still a lot to be done here but I really appreciate the island's authenticity.

A friend of yours told me that you've been building your house for some time now…

Yes, that's right, no rush. I've been building it for 6 years and it's getting better and better. The other day, by coincidence, I saw a guest house in Torres Vedras, Portugal, called Areias do Seixo which is, more or less, the same concept as the one I'm building.

Uma amiga tua disse-me que estás a construir esta casa há algum tempo…

Sim é verdade, sem pressas. Estou a construí-la há 6 anos e cada vez está melhor. No outro dia vi na televisão, por coincidência, uma guest house em Torres Vedras, chamada Areias do Seixo, que é, mais ou menos, o mesmo conceito desta que estou a fazer.

What are your favourite places here on the Island ?

My house… (Laughter.) I chose this spot in 1992, there was nothing in Palmarejo nor in Cidadela. One day, I was walking along the beach front with my cousin and when I saw this place, I said to myself "this is where I want to build!" I was still in the United States at the time but it was love at first sight. I only came to buy it years later and none of this existed back then, none of what you see here now.

There are many immigrants building. It used to be a desert, no one would come here, now everyone wants to come to this area.

E quais são os teus sítios preferidos aqui na Ilha ?

A minha casa… (Risos.) Foi um espaço que eu escolhi em 1992, não existia nada no Palmarejo nem da Cidadela. Um dia, eu ia andando pela orla marítima com o meu primo e quando vi este sítio, disse para mim, "aqui eu quero construir!"

Nessa altura, ainda estava nos Estados Unidos, mas foi amor à primeira vista. Só vim a comprá-lo anos mais tarde e ainda não existia nada disto, nada do que se pode ver hoje. Há muitos imigrantes a construírem.

Antes era deserto, ninguém vinha para aqui, agora toda a gente quer vir para esta zona.

What places must be visited when passing through the island?

I like the Titi Sushi restaurant in Palmarejo and Ponto de Encontro. Then we have Casa Portuguesa, Chef Teresa is interesting. On Thursdays there's an interesting route called the Tapas Route. There are six or seven places that serve tapas, it's similar to what's done in the Canaries and in Spain. I like Restaurante Pescador and Trópico. Now there are new projects being built, lounge-style restaurants.

I know that 11 of them have already been adjudicated and should be ready in a year, at Prainha and Quebra Canelas.

Geographically I like Prainha very much, where the hotels are. When I came here at the age of 5, I lived in Prainha, at the time there were only 6 houses there, so that's why it's my district. I think Achada de Santo António is also developing very well. I like Cidade Velha and São Francisco which are also nearby. I also go to the beaches at São Francisco, Tarrafal but only once in a while. I think they're too far away.

OK! It takes 40 minutes but as everything is so close around here…

There's more of a chance of me catching a plane to Boa Vista than going to Tarrafal! I love the beaches of Boa Vista.

Que sítios consideras de visita obrigatória numa passagem pela ilha?

Gosto do restaurante Titi Sushi, que fica no Palmarejo, um ponto de encontro.

Temos a Casa Portuguesa, o Chefe Teresa é interessante. Às quintas feiras existe uma rota interessante, que chamam a rota das tapas.

São seis ou setes sítios que servem tapas, é semelhante ao que se faz nas Canárias e em Espanha. Gosto do Restaurante Pescador e do Trópico. Agora há novos projectos em construção, restaurantes estilo lounge.

Sei que, pelo menos, 11 já foram adjudicados e devem estar prontos dentro de 1 ano, na Prainha e na Quebra Canelas.

Geograficamente, gosto muito da Prainha, onde estão os hotéis. Eu quando vim, com 5 anos, vivi na Prainha, na altura só existiam 6 casas, portanto aquele é o meu bairro. Acho que a Achada de Santo António também se está a desenvolver muito bem. Gosto da Cidade Velha, São Francisco, que também é perto. Às praias de São Francisco, Tarrafal também vou, mas só de vez em quando. Acho longe. Ok! São 40 minutos, mas como aqui é tudo perto… É mais fácil eu apanhar um avião e ir à Boa Vista do que ir ao Tarrafal! Adoro as praias da Boa Vista.

Quisemos fazer diferente e, em vez de ser a WINK a perguntar, pedimos a ambos que se entrevistassem um ao outro.

O resultado só podia ser uma bem-humorada conversa repleta de confidências.

It's common to bump into famous personalities at the Pestana Hotels and this time we got doubly lucky: the actor Tony Ramos and the film director João Jardim, who worked together recently on a film about Getúlio Vargas. We wanted to do something different so instead of WINK asking the questions we asked them to interview each other. The result was what we could have expected, a cheerful chat with plenty of confessions.

João Jardim: Diga-me uma coisa que você goste de fazer?

Tony Ramos: Nada! (Risos.) Eu amo o ócio e, curiosamente, não desfruto dele como gostaria. Não se confunda ócio com vagabundagem ou com preguiça. O ócio para mim é restaurador, é um depósito de criações, de sonhos, de projetos futuros. Há que saber viver um bom ócio sem vagabundagem… aliás a vagabundagem também é boa nos primeiros 10 dias do ócio, mas depois não. O ócio tem que ser criativo, inspirador… adoro, adoro isso.

João Jardim: Tell me about something you enjoy doing.

Tony Ramos: Nothing! (Laughter.) I love leisure and curiously I don't enjoy it as much I would like to. Leisure shouldn’t be confused with bumming around or laziness. Leisure for me is revitalising, it's a deposit of creations, dreams, future projects. You have to know how to enjoy leisure without being a bum… in fact being a bum is only good for the first 10 days of leisure time, no longer. Leisure has to be creative, inspiring... I adore that.

J.J: E o que é que você não gosta de fazer?

T.R: Não gosto de ficar muito tempo dormindo, cinco horas é suficiente, não gosto de reuniões muito barulhentas, não gosto dessa história de Instagram, Facebook, etc, onde instantaneamente se vai postando, acho isso tão deselegante, acho isso a época do narcisismo gratuito.

J.J: Now tell me about something that you don't enjoy doing.

T.R: I don't like spending too much time sleeping, five hours is plenty, I don't like noisy meetings, I don't like all this story of Instagram, Facebook etc. where one posts instantly, I find all that so inelegant, we live in times of gratuitous narcissism.

J.J: Now a different kind of question, how did it feel to play the role of a woman?

T.R: Well, it was very special and interesting because it wasn't playing the role of a transsexual or transvestite, it was in fact, to interpret a female soul, that’s a great exercise for an actor, in this case, me.

J.J: Como foi para si interpretar o papel de uma mulher?

T.R: Bom, foi um momento muito especial e interessante porque não foi representar um transexual ou travesti, era fazer, de facto, a alma feminina, daí o grande exercício para o ator, neste caso eu.

J.J: Deve ser muito gostoso poder ir para esses “lugares” na vida, passar de mulher para político, enfim todas essa viagens por diferentes personagens, “vestir essas diferentes peles”. Qual é a melhor parte disso?

T.R: Em primeiro lugar, a melhor parte é receber o convite. A grande surpresa do actor começa no convite, ao telefone, como aconteceu com o seu convite para o Getúlio Vargas, que o devo a você, e que vira emblemático, iconográfico na minha trajetória de mais de 50 anos.

J.J: It must be lovely to be able to go to those "places" in life, to go from being a woman to a politician, "wear different hats". What's the best thing about that?

T.R: First and foremost, the best part is receiving the invitation. The actor's great surprise starts with the invitation, over the phone, like it was when you invited me to play the role of Getúlio Vargas, which I owe to you, becoming symbolic and iconic in my career of more than 50 years.

J.J: What about Portugal, what is it that you like most about Portugal?

T.R: I like everything about Portugal. I’ve been visiting Portugal for 41 years. There's something about Portugal that makes me feel emotional...

Guimarães, Lisbon, contemplating the Tagus, crossing the 25 de Abril bridge and going to the Alentejo, Sintra or quite simply, at six, seven o'clock in the evening, when the sun is beginning to set, drinking a good glass of champagne, chilled at 8 degrees, eating some slices of salmon, whilst I overlook Cascais, that overlooks the sea... It's lovely.

J.J: Do que você mais gosta em Portugal?

T.R: Gosto de todo o Portugal. Visito Portugal há 41 anos. Há algo que me emociona em Portugal… Guimarães, Lisboa, olhar o Tejo, cruzar a ponte 25 de Abril e ir até ao Alentejo, Sintra, ou simplesmente às seis, sete horas da tarde, quando o sol se começa a por, beber um bom champanhe a 8 graus, e comer algumas lâminas de salmão enquanto olho para Cascais, que olha para o mar… É adorável!

Tony Ramos : Para o meu querido diretor João Jardim, o que é o futebol?

João Jardim: Para mim futebol é uma coisa distante, nunca percebi, eu acho uma coisa quase homossexual, vejo aquele bando de homens correndo atrás um do outro, se pegando, inventando a desculpa que tem ali uma bola… (Risos.)

Tony Ramos: What does football mean to you my dear director João Jardim?

João Jardim: Football is something distant for me, I've never understood it, I see that group of guys, running after one another, grabbing each other, inventing the excuse that there's a ball there... (Laughter.)

T.R: That shows just how much you like football...

J.J: It's true, football is inexplicable for me. What can be explained is how fanatic people are about football, because human beings have a tendency to fall in love with something and defend it until death, football encourages this trend which is part of human beings’ essence. But as for the game itself, I actually find it very vibrant, I even enjoy watching it, but I think it's inexplicable.

T.R: What is paternity?

J.J: It's the best experience I ever had, being a father transforms your life, it’s all about understanding what is really important and what isn’t. It's the greatest learning experience.

T.R: Isso mostra como você gosta de futebol…

J.J: É verdade, para mim o futebol é inexplicável, o que eu acho explicável é a maneira como as pessoas torcem pelo futebol, porque eu acho que o ser humano tem essa tendência para se apaixonar por alguma coisa e defender aquilo até à morte, o futebol serve para executar essa tendência, que o ser humano tem na sua essência. Mas no ponto de vista do jogo em si, até acho vibrante, até gosto de ver, mas acho inexplicável.

T.R: O que é a paternidade?

J.J: É a melhor experiência que eu já tive, ser pai é transformador na vida, é o entendimento para o que é que importa e o que não importa. É o maior aprendizado.

T.R: O meu amigo António Fagundes disse uma vez que, ao nível da informática, vivemos na era do narcisismo devido às redes sociais e a todo o equipamento que temos ao nosso dispor. Será que algum dia o mercado, no futuro, com a inclusão de toda a gente do mundo na Internet, vai transformar isso em algo razoável e não ser apenas um meio para a exposição de alguns?

J.J: É uma tendência natural do ser humano querer ser protagonista das coisas. Essas ferramentas ganharam tanto poder porque permitem às pessoas serem protagonistas, cada vez mais, receberem aplausos pelo que fazem de relevante ou irrelevante, de se sentirem amadas, porque em cada like que recebem as pessoas sentem-se mais “amadas”.

T.R: My friend António Fagundes once said, about IT, we live in the era of narcissism because of social networks and all the equipment we have at hand. Will the market, in the future, with everyone’s inclusion in the internet world, transform this into something reasonable and not just a media to expose a few?

J.J: It's a natural tendency for human beings to want to be the protagonist of things. These tools have gained all this power because they allow people to be protagonists, increasingly more so, to receive applauses for what they do that's relevant or irrelevant, to feel more loved, because people feel more “loved” every time they get a “like”.

T.R: What does Portugal mean to you?

J.J: It helps me understand who I am, it helps me understand what Brazil is, what's good about it and what‘s not so good. Portugal is a place where I feel at home and I think the Portuguese and the Brazilians should unite more so that we can be stronger in this wild world. Portugal to me, in addition to the great things it has like the food, means relaxation. I have difficulties relaxing and here I manage to relax.

T.R: E Portugal, o que é para você?

J.J: Me ajuda a entender quem eu sou, me ajuda a entender o que é o Brasil, o que tem de bom e de menos bom. Portugal é um lugar onde me sinto em casa e sinto que os portugueses e os brasileiros deviam unir-se mais para sermos mais fortes neste mundo selvagem.

Portugal para mim, além das coisas boas que tem como a comida, significa relaxamento. Eu tenho dificuldade em relaxar e aqui consigo relaxar.

When I arrived to take up my role at Ogilvy & Mather in Portugal, I was sadly ignorant of the great tradition of Portuguese cuisine and its regional variations. Even sadder still, I had little idea of the stunning quality of Portuguese wines and of the improvements that had been made in their production over the past generation.

Nowhere can one discover a better introduction to Portuguese cuisine and great wines than in the Alentejo region. I still recall an evening in Evora with my close family. An amazing meal acted as the perfect introduction to the regional cuisine of Alentejo. The introduction to robust Alentejo red wines - on that night especially with some delicious vintages from close to Evora - started a voyage of discovery which continues happily to this day. A moment to savour and a passion not lost.

Momentos que nunca se esquecem Uma das alegrias simples da vida é o prazer que um bom vinho ou uma refeição excecional podem proporcionar. Um jantar memorável entre amigos e família, a descoberta de um novo vinho ou uma nova casta, são seguramente alguns dos palcos onde se jogam alguns dos maiores prazeres da vida.

Quando vim para Portugal para assumir novas funções na Ogilvy & Mather era tristemente ignorante da maravilhosa tradição da cozinha portuguesa e das suas variantes regionais. Mais triste ainda, não tinha a mínima noção da qualidade dos vinhos portugueses nem das melhorias que se têm vindo a fazer na sua produção ao longo da última geração.

Não há como a região do Alentejo para nos iniciarmos na descoberta da cozinha portuguesa e vinhos maravilhosos. Ainda me lembro muito bem de um serão único com a minha família mais próxima em Évora.

Uma refeição do outro mundo serviu de iniciação perfeita à cozinha regional alentejana. A apresentação aos tintos robustos do Alentejo – nessa noite através de uns deliciosos vintages de perto de Évora – foi o início de uma feliz viagem de descoberta que continua até hoje.

Momentos que ainda hoje saboreio e uma paixão que perdura.

Bem-estar é a ‘trend’ da década. Uma indústria que vale triliões de dólares que engloba experiências de spa, nutrição, fitness e medicinas alternativas. Tudo para nos sentirmos bem, prevenirmos problemas futuros, anteciparmo-nos à idade e à lei da gravidade, essas tiranas.

Well-being is the 'trend' of the decade. An industry worth trillions of dollars encompassing spa experiences, nutrition, fitness and alternative medicines. Everything to make us feel good, prevent future problems, pre-empt age and defy the law of gravity, those tyrants.

Chegámos à era do ‘wellness’. A saúde é um ‘asset’ gerido com mão de ferro. Já não basta mimarmo-nos, queremos aprender a tirar o máximo partido do nosso corpo, do bemestar gerado, anteciparmo-nos à medicina. Saúde gera saúde e a prevenção é a palavra chave. É também a primeira tendência que identificamos nesta era. Fazemos ioga para corrigir a postura. Naturopatia para controlar as alergias. Acupunctura para prevenir e tratar dores. Transformámos o nosso corpo e os nossos hábitos diários em bases de dados com estatísticas medidas à casa decimal. Não largamos a pulseira que mede o ritmo cardíaco, classifica os ciclos do sono, conta as calorias ingeridas, estabelece metas. Uma loucura por dados que nos quantificam, tornam pública a nossa esfera mais privada, potenciado pelo efeito das tecnologias e das redes sociais.

Com tanta conectividade, tanta agitação, afogados que estamos neste excesso de estímulos que não existia até há cinco anos, as desintoxicações tecnológicas – ou techno-detox – são a segunda tendência mais referida nos estudos da especialidade.

Os spas estão cada vez mais atentos às necessidades dos seus clientes. Sabem que não há tempo a perder e por isso é ver a chegada dos tratamentos Express, versões curtas dos existentes no cardápio, que permitem que se dê um salto ao spa à hora do almoço sem que o regresso ao escritório – quatro horas depois –, seja motivo para despedimento com justa causa… Os horários também se adaptaram a estas necessidades. A generalidade dos spas abre às 7h00 e não fecha antes das 22h00. Em alguns hotéis mais movimentados, chegam a estar abertos 24h. Os homens, por sua vez, estão também cada vez mais dedicados ao seu bem-estar. Os spas tiram proveito desta tendência e não são poucos os novos tratamentos e massagens com denominações viris como “massagem desportiva” ou “massagem executiva” a chegarem aos menus. O que mais procuram eles? Aliviar o stress. E para combater este mal da era moderna, surgem modalidades como o ioga com gravidade suspensa, os tanques de flutuação com cromaterapia, as passadeiras anti-gravidade.

This is the era of 'wellness'. Health is an 'asset' managed with an iron fist. It’s no longer enough to pamper ourselves, we want to learn how to make the most of our body, managing our wellbeing, pre-empting the need for medication. Health generates health and prevention is the key word. It is also the first trend we have identified of this era. We do yoga to correct posture.

Naturopathy to control allergies. Acupuncture for preventing and treating pain. We transform our body and daily habits into databases with statistics measured to the decimal point. We refuse to take off our wristband that measures our heart beat, classifies sleep patterns, counts calories and sets targets. Crazy for data that quantifies, makes our most private life public, boosted by the effect of technologies and social networks.

With so much connectivity, so much agitation, drowning as we are in this over-stimulation, that didn’t even exist until five years ago, technological detoxification - or techno-detox – is the second most referred to trend in specialty studies.

Spas are increasingly aware of their client’s needs. They know there’s no time to waste and that’s why we have seen the start of Express treatments, short versions of ones that already exist on the menu, which allow you to pop into the spa at lunchtime, without returning to the office - four hours later – with fair grounds for dismissal... Opening hours have also been adapted to these needs.

Most spas open at 7:00 am and don’t close before 10:00 pm. In some of the busier hotels, they even stay open 24 hours a day. Men, in turn, are also increasingly dedicated to their well-being. Spas are taking advantage of this trend and there are now a few new treatments and massages on the menus with manly names such as "sports massage" or "executive massage". What else do they seek?

Stress relief and to ward off the evil of this modern era, there are treatments such as suspended antigravity yoga, chromotherapy flotation tank and antigravity treadmills.

Women, who have always been avid spa goers, also have the right to create new trends. The most recent is social fitness, consisting of group activities focused on well-being.

As mulheres, grandes frequentadoras dos spas desde sempre, também têm direito a criar novas tendências. A mais recente é a do social fitness, que consiste em actividades de grupo focadas no bem-estar. Sair à noite e beber até cair com as amigas? Programa ultrapassado. O que está a dar é, mantendo as amigas na equação mas esquecendo o álcool e a noitada, fazer a festa no spa. As ‘selfies’ abundantes e a partilha nas redes sociais, com ‘hashtags’ sugestivos – tipo #trainhard; #gymrat ou #healthylifestyle – também estão contemplados.

Nada melhor, depois da ida ao spa ou ao ginásio (porque não ambos?), que uma sessão de compras. Que o digam as amigas do grupo de social fitness anterior. Assim nasceu o spa shopping, outra grande tendência. Os estudiosos perceberam que um tratamento de spa tem, sobre os utilizadores, um efeito de evasão e descontracção tão poderoso como o de uma viagem. Toda a gente sabe que os viajantes estão mais disponíveis para gastarem dinheiro em compras. As lojas dos spas estão, aos poucos, a tornar-se em espaços de compras que vão muito além dos básicos de spa.

Do mesmo modo, assiste-se a um cada vez mais frequente regresso às origens. Em 2014 verificou-se o regresso a rituais antigos, aos banhos, do tempo dos romanos – talvez a mais antiga experiência de spa do mundo. E dos tratamentos mais fora da caixa. De acordo com o estudo da “Spa Finder 365”, andar pelos bosques, fumar marijuana, fazer voto de silêncio e rebolar na areia podem ser as tendências mais quentes em matéria de spas este ano. Os spas de marijuana são a última grande descoberta nos EUA (com a ajuda da recente descriminalização) em matéria de gestão do stress, combate às insónias e depressões e alívio de sintomas dolorosos. Tratase de medicina preventiva e a ‘cannabusiness’ não podia estar mais em alta, tendo saído da clandestinidade dos dormitórios universitários para as reuniões de conselho de administração.

O termo, em inglês, é bem mais divertido: ‘from dorm room to boardroom’.

Sendo legal, dentro ou fora da caixa, no final, o balanço é positivo: quantas mais pessoas apostarem no seu bem-estar, mais felizes serão as populações. O objectivo é apenas um: viver mais e melhor.

Going out at night and drinking until you drop with friends?

That’s a totally outdated thing to do. What’s in, is keeping friends in the equation but forgetting the alcohol and the big night out and having the party at a spa. Abundant 'selfies' and sharing on social networks, with suggestive 'hashtags' - like #trainhard; #gymrat or #healthylifestyle - are also included.

After a trip to the spa or the gym (or why not both?) there’s nothing better than a shopping spree. Just ask your girlfriends from the previous social fitness group. Thus spa shopping was born, another big trend. Researchers realized that a spa treatment has a switching off and relaxation effect which is as powerful as the effect of going away on a trip. Everyone knows that travellers are more willing to spend money on shopping and therefore, gradually, spa shops are becoming shopping areas that go far beyond the spa basics.

Similarly, we are witnessing an increasingly frequent return to the origins. In 2014 there was a return to ancient rituals, the Roman times baths - perhaps the oldest spa experience in the world and the more “out of the box” treatments. According to the "Spa Finder 365" study, walking through the woods, smoking marijuana, taking a vow of silence and rolling in the sand may be the hottest trends in spas this year. The marijuana spas are the latest big discovery in the US (with the help of the recent decriminalization) in the field of stress management, combating insomnia and depression and pain relief. This is preventive medicine and the 'cannabusiness' could not be more on the rise, having left the underground university dormitories for the board of directors meetings - 'from dorm room to boardroom'.

As it is legal, inside or outside the box, in the end, the result is positive: the more people focus on their well-being, the happier populations will be. The ultimate aim is just one: to live longer and better.

Até o típico pastel de Belém foi eleito como um dos melhores doces da Europa. Já para não falar nos inúmeros prémios que o alojamento em Lisboa tem arrecadado.

Quem já teve a sorte de a namorar, sabe que Lisboa é encantadora, misteriosa, cheia de recantos e adornada de jóias históricas.

Banhada pelo sereno e largo rio Tejo, de onde outrora partiram as caravelas dos Descobrimentos Portugueses, Lisboa é uma cidade de contrastes, espalhados pelas sete colinas por onde o casario se estendeu ao longo dos séculos. Repleta de miradouros, a cidade surpreende em cada paisagem e todos os dias do ano.

Com um clima perfeito, dominado pelo sol, a cidade convida a passeios e muita fotografia. A sua luz, elogiada constantemente, atrai cada vez mais fotógrafos e realizadores que encontram aqui o “estúdio” perfeito. The world has succumbed to Lisbon. The authenticity, identity and beauty of the Portuguese capital are increasingly attracting tourists of all ages, making this the promised city. In recent years, Lisbon has won everything there is to win in terms of international awards. It won the “oscars” of Tourism, by the World Travel Awards, it was voted one of the world’s most beautiful cities, CNN called it the coolest city in Europe and according to Condé Naste Traveler magazine, it's the best country to visit. For USA Today, it's the best summer holiday destination, for Lonely Planet it is the destination with the best value for money.

Even the typical pastry, the “Pastel de Belém” was voted one of the best sweets in Europe. Not to mention the numerous awards that Lisbon's accommodation has received.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to enjoy Lisbon, will know that it is enchanting, mysterious, full of nooks and crannies and adorned with historic gems. Surrounded by the serene and wide River Tagus, from where the caravels of the Portuguese Discoveries departed, Lisbon is a city of contrasts, spread across seven hills where little houses have been scattered across over the centuries. Filled with lookout points, the city surprises one with every landscape, every day of the year. With a perfect climate, dominated by the sun, the city invites you to take walks and lots of photographs. Its light, which is constantly praised, attracts more and more photographers and filmmakers who find the perfect "studio" here.

Legend has it that Lisbon was founded by the mythical hero Ulysses and this capital city has been able to adapt to changing times without ever losing its unique character.

Even the people of Lisbon, friendly by nature, seem to have become even kinder of late, welcoming the whole world that is now discovering Lisbon, with open arms.

With incredible architectural richness, witness of the various eras and styles, the highlights are inevitably the great monuments such as the Castelo de São Jorge, the imposing Monastery of Jeronimos, the reconstruction of the Baixa district by the Marquis of Pombal, after the great earthquake of 1755 and the countless convents and palaces. Lisbon is authentic and guarantees a journey through time, especially due to its amazing ability to recreate ancient concepts and shops, which delight tourists. There's also the mystery of the captivating contrasts... The grand avenues that intersect with little alleyways that barely ever see the sun, modern buildings coexisting with the typical Portuguese houses, the typical neighborhoods which at night are full of young people and music, the large squares covered in cobblestones and the narrow staircases that shorten the distance between the hills. To complete the list of Lisbon's charms requires mention of the fado, the incredible food, the affordable luxury of Avenida da Liberdade, the numerous events that take place in the city throughout the year, the modern Expo area, the beaches which are minutes from the capital and the infectious smile of the Portuguese who have proven to have an innate ability to connect with the world, or they wouldn’t have been the precursors of globalization in the 15th century.

Até os lisboetas, simpáticos por natureza, parecem que ficaram mais amáveis nos últimos tempos e acolhem de braços abertos o mundo inteiro que agora descobre Lisboa.

Com uma riqueza arquitectónica incrível, que testemunha as diversas épocas e estilos, o destaque vai inevitavelmente para os grandes monumentos como o Castelo de São Jorge, o imponente Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a reconstrução da Baixa pelo Marquês de Pombal, após o grande terramoto de 1755, os inúmeros conventos e palácios. Lisboa é autêntica e garante uma viagem no tempo, sobretudo pela capacidade incrível que tem mostrado na recriação de antigos conceitos e lojas, que fazem as delícias dos turistas. One of the centres of attention of the Pousada is undoubtedly the sublime Grand Salon on the first floor, with its ceiling and walls covered with gold leaf and which is ready to host events. Just as impressive are the numerous historical items used to decorate the Pousada that came from the Nadir Afonso Foundation and the Museu da Cidade. Among the various works, you will find some that were made ​​in the 40s, for the Mundo Português exhibition and replicas of the São Vicente panels, now on display in the central patio where you can enjoy Portuguese cuisine by Chef Tiago Bonito, in the “Lisboeta” Restaurant. Another "ex -libris" is the Dom Pérignon Suite, named after the sophisticated and refined champagne brand. The spacious, elegant suite, fully clad with wood panelling, is set in the former meeting room of the Council of Ministers and Oliveira Salazar’s office, in the early days of the Estado Novo dictatorship. It has a living room, a bedroom with a king-size bed, dressing room and two magnificent windows overlooking the Praça do Comércio. A place that breathes history that promises to dazzle all those who pass through the Pousada de Lisboa.

Um dos centros das atenções na Pousada é, sem dúvida, o indescritível Salão Nobre no primeiro andar, com o teto e paredes revestidas com folha de ouro, que está pronto para acolher eventos. Igual destaque conseguem as inúmeras peças históricas usadas no design de interior da Pousada e que provêm das coleções da Fundação Nadir Afonso e do Museu da Cidade.

Entre as várias obras é possível encontrar algumas feitas, nos anos 40, para a exposição Mundo Português e as réplicas dos painéis de São Vicente, que agora revestem o pátio central, onde poderá desfrutar de uma cozinha portuguesa de autor com a assinatura do Chef Tiago Bonito, no Restaurante “Lisboeta”.

Outro dos «ex-libris» é a Suite Dom Pérignon, marca da sofisticação e requinte no mundo do champanhe. A ampla e elegante suite, totalmente revestida a painéis de madeira, ocupa aquela que era a sala de reunião do Conselho de Ministros e o gabinete de Oliveira Salazar, nos primeiros tempos da ditadura do Estado Novo. Tem uma sala de estar, quarto com cama kingsize, closet e duas janelas magníficas sobre a Praça do Comércio.

Um lugar cheio de História que promete deslumbrar todos os que passaram pela Pousada de Lisboa.

Foi no restaurante Valle-Flôr na Sala Renascença que se homenageou a passagem da atriz americana Marisa Berenson por Lisboa. Um jantar de Halloween onde ninguém se mascarou. A atriz de "Cabaret", "Morte em Veneza" e de "Barry Lyndon" de Kubrick esteve em Portugal a trabalhar numa produção underground francesa. Nesse jantar celebrou-se o reencontro com um amigo seu de longa data, Pedro Espírito Santo.

It was at the Valle-Flôr restaurant in the Renascença room that we paid tribute to the American actress, Marisa Berenson, during a stop-over in Lisbon. A Halloween dinner where no one got dressed up. The actress, from “Cabaret”, “Death in Venice” and “Barry Lyndon” by Kubrick, was in Portugal working on a French underground production.

This dinner celebrated the reunion with a longtime friend of hers, Pedro Espírito Santo.

Quando o artista Mário Belém decidiu aventurar-se na pintura e meter o design gráfico em segundo plano, conta que teve de reaprender a desenhar. “Foram quase 15 anos a utilizar canetas digitais, canetas que dão possibilidades infinitas. E além disso no computador podemos sempre fazer undo (desfazer) e voltar atrás”.

Ao ouvir esta frase paramos alguns segundos à mesa e lamentamos o facto de não poder fazer também undo em algumas situações da vida real. Estamos a almoçar na Praça das Armas, na Taberna da Praça. Ao lado de Mário está também o ilustrador Diogo Machado conhecido por Add Fuel. A nosso pedido desenham ambos os individuais de papel que cobrem as mesas. Nenhum deles bebe vinho ao almoço, querem sentir-se capazes de trabalhar depois.

Mário apresentou em Abril a sua segunda exposição a solo, “Só há uma verdade: A saída é pelo espelho”.

When the artist, Mario Belém, decided to venture into painting and put his graphic design work on hold, he said he had to relearn how to draw. “It had been almost 15 years using digital pens, which provide endless possibilities. Besides that, with a computer you can always ‘undo’ and ‘go back’.”

When we hear this, we all stop for a few seconds at the table and regret that it’s impossible to ‘undo’ some real-life situations.

We are having lunch in the Praça das Armas, at the Taberna da Praça restaurant. Next to Mario is the illustrator, Diogo Machado, better known as ‘Add Fuel’. Upon our request, both start drawing on the paper table mats. Neither of them drink wine at lunchtime, they want to be able to work later. Mario presented his second solo exhibition in April, “There is only one truth: The way out is through the mirror”.

Nesta exposição incluiu trabalhos reunidos nos últimos dois anos onde refletia sobre perdas pessoais (mãe, avó e pai). Vendeu tudo o que foi exposto.

Sem querer parecer arrogante ou algo parecido, explica-nos que antes de expor a solo como artista, já tinha trabalhado muito como ilustrador comercial em publicidade. Does this imply pressure when it comes to preparing the next exhibition? Without wanting to sound arrogant or anything, he explains that before exhibiting as a solo artist, he had worked hard as a commercial illustrator in advertising. He didn’t make that much money, the prices of his works aren’t

Entrou na Faculdade de Arquitetura, mas odiou. Mais tarde afirmava-se a trabalhar como freelancer para agências de publicidade. No entanto, quando se cruzava com o trabalho de pessoas como Diogo Machado, sentia que não estava no sítio certo. E conheceram-se precisamente porque Mário quis comprar uma série de azulejos que tinha visto à venda no site de Diogo (Add Fuel). “Gosto muito do teu trabalho, eu também gosto muito do teu, ótimo vamos ser amigos para a vida”, terá sido isto que disseram um ao outro.

He started working as a teenager, even when he was still a student, he drew for a body boarding magazine and painted crash helmets, “I was brought up being told that from the age of 16, you have to be able to buy your own socks.”

He studied at the Faculty of Architecture but hated it. Later he started working as a freelancer for advertising agencies.

However, when he bumped into people like Diogo Machado, he always felt he was in the wrong place. They met, precisely, because Mario wanted to buy a series of tiles that he had seen for sale on Diogo’s site (Add Fuel). “I love your work, I also love yours, great we’ll be friends for life”, was what they said to one another.

Diogo cresceu na linha da Cascais e poupava o dinheiro dos almoços e lanches para comprar latas de tinta. O universo do skate influenciou-o, “os desenhos nas tábuas, os monstros”.

Começou a destacar-se no mundo da ilustração, trabalhando para marcas como a Nike. Cria desenhos surreais inspirandose no universo dos videogames – caricaturas meio robóticas, ursinhos, caveiras e pelo meio o apocalipse ou aquilo que poderão ser restos das mãos de Mickey. Em 2008 ao ser convidado para cobrir um mural em Cascais, começou a interessar-se pelo azulejo. Procurava algo que o identificasse como português, “surgiu a ideia de adaptar o meu universo da ilustração, de personagens e de ambientes um bocado estranhos e inseri-los na rotação concêntrica dos azulejos”.

A questão de trabalhar uma forma que se assemelhasse ao azulejo, capaz de cobrir superfícies gigantes, levou Diogo a recorrer a uma técnica específica. São na realidade diversos stencils que se acumulam para criar o efeito dos azulejos tradicionais. Ao longe parece que estamos a olhar para uma painel clássico, quando nos aproximamos descobrimos todo um mundo povoado das suas criaturas. Mário Belém recorreu também a algo tradicionalmente português, na sua primeira exposição,“Mário quem?”, desenhava a partir de provérbios e expressões populares portuguesas.

“Por isso é que convidei o Diogo para almoçar, para reforçar aqui qualquer coisa”. À nossa frente prometem fazer algo juntos, “uma pintura grande”, feita à mão, sem os computadores capazes de fazer undo ou zoom. Será só preciso dar alguns passos para trás, o mural que farão juntos deverá ver-se ao longe.

Diogo grew up in Cascais and used to save his lunch and snacks’ money to buy tins of paint. It was the world of skateboarding that influenced him, “the designs on the boards, the monsters”. He began to excel in the world of illustration, working for brands like Nike. His surreal work is inspired by the universe of video games – creatures that are half robotic, little bears, skulls and in the midst of all this, the apocalypse or what may be the remains of Mickey’s hands. In 2008, when he was invited to cover a wall in Cascais, he started to be interested in tiles. He was seeking something that would identify him as being Portuguese, “then came the idea to adapt my illustration universe, the slightly odd characters and environments and insert them in the concentric rotation of the tiles.” Working with a form that resembles tiles, capable of covering giant surfaces, led Diogo to resort to a specific technique.

They are, in fact, a series of stencils which come together to create the effect of traditional tiles. At a distance it seems as if one is looking at a classic tile panel, as we get closer, we discover an entire world populated by his creatures. Mario Belem also resorted to something traditionally Portuguese in his first exhibition “Mario who?” his drawings were based on Portuguese proverbs and popular expressions. “That's why I invited Diogo to lunch, to reinforce something here”. They promised, in front of us, to do something together, “a large painting”, handmade, without any computers to ‘undo’ or zoom. All you need to do is to take a few steps back, the mural they will create together, will have to be seen from afar.

A manequim brasileira Milena Cardoso não esconde o entusiasmo quando é convidada a subir para o Tuk Tuk que a deve levar da Praça do Comércio até à porta do Castelo. “Turista, turista, turista”, canta em voz baixa.

Lisboa é a sua cidade de adopção desde os 17 anos, pelo meio viveu uma temporada de 5 anos em Paris e passou pela Suécia. Tem 28 anos, quer ficar aqui.

Para entrar no restaurante Casa Leão é preciso atravessar uma parte do Castelo de S. Jorge. Há uma esplanada com mesas postas e toalhas que esvoaçam.

Há um estranho vento atlântico nesse dia. Há também a inconfundível vista do Castelo sobre Lisboa. O sol desaparece deixando um rasto de luz alaranjado sobre a cidade. Faz-se um brinde antes que tudo voe. Margarida Pestana faz as honras da casa e janta connosco.

The Brazilian model, Milena Cardoso can’t hide her enthusiasm when she is invited to get on the Tuk Tuk that will take her from Praça do Comércio to the door of the Castle. “Tourist, tourist, tourist”, she sings quietly. Lisbon is the city that adopted her 17 years’ ago, in the meantime she spent 5 years in Paris and also spent some time in Sweden.

She’s 28 and wants to stay here.

To reach the Casa Leão restaurant, one has to go through part of São Jorge Castle. There’s an outdoor area with tables set and tablecloths flapping around in the wind.

There’s a strange Atlantic wind that day. There’s also the unmistakable view over Lisbon from the castle. The sun disappears leaving an orange trace over the city. A toast is made before everything blows away. Margarida Pestana welcomes everyone and dines with us.

A acompanhar Milena está o arquiteto e cartoonista Gonçalo Pires-Marques aka Gonga (é assim que assina os seus cartoons).“É um brother”, diz-nos Milena. Os cartoons desenhados por Gonçalo foram publicados durante anos no jornal Independente. Tirando um iPhone do bolso, Gonçalo procura mostra-nos um desenho seu feito recentemente para o jornal Expresso.

Accompanying Milena is the architect and cartoonist Gonçalo Pires Marques, aka Gonga (that's how he signs his cartoons).

“He's a brother,” Milena tells us. Gonçalo’s cartoons were published for years in the Independente newspaper. Taking an iPhone out of his pocket, Gonçalo shows us one of his recent cartoons made for Expresso newspaper.

É uma homenagem ao jornal francês Charlie Hebdo, atacado a 7 de Janeiro. O ataque terrorista mexeu com os seus princípios de liberdade. A conversa incendeia-se à volta do tema. Margarida Pestana encontra a razão numa citação de Voltaire que diz em voz alta: “Posso não estar de acordo com o que você diz, mas lutarei até à morte para que você tenha o direito de o dizer”. Cai um copo, entorna-se vinho. Silêncio.

Parece haver sempre um silêncio quando um copo de vinho se entorna. Chegam as sobremesas e com elas sai da cozinha o Chef Tiago Bonito. A pensar tirar uma fotografia, Cátia Castel-Branco pergunta se lhe pode acentuar as bochechas com um pouco de blush. Milena deverá em seguida dar-lhe um beijo. O Chef cora de verdade. Mas quem não coraria?

Milena recorda então o seu percurso de modelo. Foi descoberta aos 12 anos, quando se inscreveu num concurso para a agência Elite, numa idade em que ainda não tinha pensado que rumo dar à vida. Entrou na moda sem criar expectativas e ainda assim tudo aconteceu. Fala de empenho.

It’s a tribute to the French newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, attacked on 7 January. The terrorist attack touched his principles of freedom. The conversation becomes heated as they discuss the topic. Margarida Pestana finds reason in Voltaire’s quote that she cites, “I do not agree with what you have to say but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”. A glass drops, wine spills. Silence. There always seems to be silence when a glass of wine is spilt. The desserts arrive from the kitchen and with them comes Chef Tiago Bonito. Thinking about taking a photo of him, Cátia Castel-Branco asks whether she can highlight his cheeks with a little blusher. Then Milena should give him a kiss. The Chef then really blushes. Who wouldn’t?

Milena then recalls her modelling career. She was discovered at the age of 12 when she enrolled in a competition for the Elite model agency, at an age when she had still had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. She joined the fashion world without any expectations and nevertheless everything happened. She talks about commitment.

Trocou a sua cidade natal Teresina por São Paulo. Nunca se deslumbrou. A primeira casa na Europa foi em Lisboa e em Paris eram tantos os desfiles que precisava da ajuda de um motoboy para fintar o tempo e atravessar a cidade. Percorreu mundo. Foi manequim de prova na Chanel.

Guarda consigo a alegria com que a família no Brasil acompanhava os seus trabalhos espalhados nas revistas.

Agora a sua agenda de trabalho preenche-se com antecedência. Já sabe o que vai fazer até ao final do ano. A latitude de Portugal não a afasta assim tanto de Nova Iorque onde continua a ir com frequência. Perguntamos-lhe se já pensou no que fará quando um dia se retirar da moda. Todas as manequins pensam nisso. Milena sorri e diz, “Hotelaria”.

She changed her hometown from Teresina to São Paulo. She never let it go to her head. Her first home in Europe was in Lisbon and in Paris there were so many shows that she needed the help of a motorcycle courier to dribble time and get across the city. She went all around the world. She was a fitting model for Chanel.

She guards in her heart the joy with which her family in Brazil would follow her work in magazines. Now her work agenda is defined well in advance. She already knows what she’ll be doing at the end of the year. Portugal’s latitude is not that far from New York’s which she continues to visit frequently. We ask whether she has ever thought about what she’ll do when she retires from modelling. All models think about this. Milena smiles and says “work in the Hotel Industry”.

O táxi que nos traz de Lisboa deixa-nos no largo em frente ao Palácio de Queluz. Impressionados pela dimensão da gigantesca praça vazia, começamos a falar em voz baixa uns com os outros. Procuramos o restaurante Cozinha Velha como se um jantar secreto e fora de horas estivesse à nossa espera. Atravessamos um pequeno pátio e ficamos em silêncio a olhar para uma impressionante chaminé. Antigamente era a cozinha do Palácio, agora é a sala do restaurante que procurávamos.

“Bom, acendemos a lareira?”, brinca Ruben Alves. É com o realizador do filme "A Gaiola Dourada" que nos preparamos para jantar. Com ele está um dos atores do seu filme, o Lusodescendente Jean-Pierre Martins, e a sua mulher, a atriz francesa Alexandra Genoves. Grávida de 7 meses, Alexandra começa a noite com um pedido: “Conseguem sugerir-me um nome português para o nosso filho. Um nome que em França não passe por espanhol ou italiano. Gostava que fosse autêntico”. Chovem sugestões.

“Rodrigo, Dinis, Nuno, Tiago, João, Pedro, Tomás, Duarte”.

The taxi from Lisbon drops us off at the square in front of Queluz Palace. Overwhelmed by the by the sheer size of the empty square, we started talking to each other in a low tone of voice. We set off looking for the Cozinha Velha restaurant, as if there was an afterhours secret dinner awaiting us. We crossed a small patio and stared in silence at an impressive chimney. It used to be the Palace's kitchen, now it's the room of the restaurant we were looking for.

“Well, shall we light the fireplace”, jokes Ruben Alves. It is with the Director of ‘The Gilded Cage’, that we prepare to have dinner.

With him are two actors from his film, the Luso- descendant Jean-Pierre Martins and his wife, the French actress Alexandra Genoves. 7 months pregnant, Alexandra starts the evening with a request: “Can you suggest a Portuguese name for our son. A name that won't sound Spanish or Italian, in France. I'd like it to be authentic”. There are plenty of suggestions, “Rodrigo, Dinis, Nuno, Tiago, João, Pedro, Tomás, Duarte”.

A conversa instala-se na identidade portuguesa. Foram os pais de Ruben, emigrantes portugueses em Paris, que inspiraram o argumento de "A Gaiola Dourada". O humor no seu filme explorava a portugalidade precisamente. Nunca os emigrantes tinham tido uma comédia sobre eles. Em Portugal tornou-se num dos filmes mais vistos de sempre, ecoou pelo mundo e por onde passou recolheu o mesmo entusiasmo. “Em Paris, cresci a ouvir todo o tipo de clichés sobre os portugueses. Eu sempre escolhi rir-me deles”, diz Ruben. A cantora Amália Rodrigues desvendou-lhe também alguns mistérios sobre a essência portuguesa, “foi através da voz dela que pensei: é o meu país! O sangue que corre nas minhas veias é português. E percebi muitas coisas sobre isso; através dos textos e dos poetas que ela cantava.

Aquela mulher captou o povo português, cantou-o. E eu quando a ouvia cantar pensava: ‘ah, eu sou assim, eu sinto isto também’.” Tem sido pelo universo do fado que o olhar de Ruben Alves tem andado ultimamente. Escolheu cantores e músicos para participar num disco de homenagem a Amália.

Até ao final do ano vai realizar também um documentário, “Vou usar os fadistas para que nos levem numa aventura, mas não serão só eles. É um documentário orgânico, emocional...

The conversation shifts to Portuguese identity. It was Ruben's parents who were the inspiration for the ‘The Gilded Cage’ film. The humour explored in his film is precisely “Portugality”.

Portuguese immigrants had never had a comedy made about them. In Portugal it became one of the films with the highest audiences of all times, this echoed across the world where it was shown and was received just as enthusiastically. “I grew up in Paris listening to all kinds of clichés about the Portuguese. I always chose to laugh at them”, says Ruben. The singer, Amália Rodrigues, also revealed some mysteries of the Portuguese essence, “it was her voice that made me think: this is my country!” The blood that flows in my veins is Portuguese and I learnt about that; through the lyrics and the poets she sang about. That woman really understood the Portuguese people, she expressed them and when I heard her sing I would think: “Ah! I’m like that, I feel like that too.” It’s the Fado universe that Ruben Alves has had his eye on recently. He chose singers and musicians to participate in an album in honour of Amália. He will also have finished directing a documentary by the end of the year. “I am going to use Fado singers to take us on an adventure, but it won't just be them. It's an organic, emotional documentary… Fado is story of encounters”.

Jean-Pierre listens to him and adds, “what I like about Fado is the ‘saudade’, even if most foreigners don't understand what is being sung, it touches something inside them”. Jean-Pierre Martins was a musician before he became an actor, “I played the saxophone and flute in a rock band”, he says, laughing. He started making films in France and hasn't stopped since. In the film ‘La Vie en Rose’ about Edith Piaf 's life, he played the role of the singer's boxer lover. Marion Cotillard played the role of Piaf and won an Oscar for her performance. Jean-Pierre is in Portugal filming with Marco Martins, he'll be around for a while, he’s just accepted a role in a Portuguese soap opera. Portugal's a new playing field for him, being an actor is a challenge where pleasure speaks louder. He and Ruben share similar memories of their childhood, where they would leave the Paris district they grew up in, to spend memorable summers on the Portuguese streets. “When I returned to Paris I would describe something that was not far from being paradise”, adds Jean-Pierre.

In the taxi that takes us back to Lisbon, the song ‘Take my Breath Away’ is on the radio. Ruben Alves, Jean-Pierre Martins and Alexandra laugh. It was the soundtrack for ‘Top Gun’, when Tom Cruise was still Tom Cruise. They listen to the song in silence contemplating the night, as if the lyrics spoke of their expectations and Portugal.

Jean-Pierre ouve-o e acrescenta, “O que eu gosto no fado é da saudade, mesmo que os estrangeiros não percebam o que ali se canta, aquilo provoca qualquer coisa dentro deles”.

Jean-Pierre Martins foi músico antes de se tornar ator, “tocava saxofone e flauta numa banda de rock”, diz-nos a rir. Começou a fazer cinema em França e nunca mais parou.

No filme "La Vie en Rose" sobre a vida de Édith Piaf interpretava o amante pugilista da cantora. Marion Cotillard era Piaf e ganhou um Oscar com o desempenho. Jean-Pierre está em Portugal a filmar com Marco Martins, ficará por aqui algum tempo, acabou de aceitar um papel numa telenovela portuguesa. Para ele, Portugal é como um novo terreno de jogo, ser ator é um desafio onde o prazer fala mais alto. Ele e Ruben partilham memórias de infância parecidas, nas quais deixavam a região parisiense onde cresceram para passar verões inesquecíveis nas ruas portuguesas, “quando chegava a Paris descrevia aos meus amigos algo que não está muito longe do paraíso”, remata Jean-Pierre.

No táxi que nos leva para Lisboa, passa na rádio a canção Take my Breath Away. Ruben Alves, Jean-Pierre Martins e Alexandra riem. Era a banda sonora do filme Top Gun, quando o Tom Cruise ainda era o Tom Cruise. Em silêncio ouvem a música contemplando a paisagem noturna, como se a letra desta canção falasse das expectativas deles e de Portugal.

Em que é que se transformaram os seus sonhos de criança? Nunca tive sonhos. Eu sou romanesco mas não sou romântico. Eu não sonho com a minha vida, vivo-a em vez de a sonhar.

A minha incapacidade de fazer escolhas.

A minha mãe. Porque acho que ela é uma artista e ainda não o descobriu. O Vhils e o Stromae.

Sou capaz de recusar tudo quando é por uma má razão.

No but I do believe that everyone can create something every day. Being an artist is all about having the patience and perseverance to finish what you set out to create.

Francês, nasceu a 9 de Janeiro de 1980. Começou a sua carreira como ator em Paris, trabalhando para a televisão e cinema. Realizou e escreveu o argumento do filme A Gaiola Dourada, enorme sucesso comercial em França e Portugal, sendo em 2013 o filme mais visto nas salas de cinema portuguesas. Ganhou nesse ano o Prémio do Público do European Film Awards. Trabalha atualmente num documentário sobre o fado e surge como diretor artístico num disco de homenagem à cantora Amália Rodrigues a ser lançado a 10 de Julho de 2015.

French, born 9 January 1980. He started his acting career in Paris working for television and cinema. He directed and wrote the script for “The Gilded Cage”, a huge success in France and Portugal and it was the film with the highest audiences in Portuguese cinemas in 2013. This year it won the People's Choice Award at the European Film Awards.

He's currently working on a documentary about fado and is the artistic director of an album in honour of Amália Rodrigues, to be launched on 10 July, 2015.
