DEAR GUEST Seja bem-vindo ao sexto número da WINK, a revista que lhe traz as novidades e sugestões do Grupo Pestana, Hotels & Resorts, das Pousadas de Portugal e dos seus destinos. Nesta edição, voltamo-nos para nós próprios e percorremos o Algarve. No ano em que conquistou dois importantes prémios de turismo, ainda para mais em competição com outras das principais regiões da Europa, o Algarve passa a poder usar o título de Melhor Destino de Praia e de Melhor Destino de Golfe. São dois títulos diferentes para duas realidades diferentes. Uma, a que elege o Algarve como a melhor praia da Europa, tende a relembrarnos a importância do nosso mar e da nossa costa, e que o litoral algarvio mantém quase intactas as suas características de sempre: uma costa ora recortada por falésias, ora feita de areais imensos, um mar tranquilo e de águas puras e um clima perfeito durante a maior parte do ano. A escolha do Algarve como Melhor Destino de Golfe premeia acima de tudo as décadas de investimento em infra-estruturas e capital humano. Foi um trabalho de muitos, inclusive nosso, Grupo Pestana, feito a partir da vontade de mostrar o verdadeiro valor do Algarve e, muito em especial, provar que o Algarve é um destino de todos os meses do ano.

Welcome to the sixth edition of WINK, the magazine that brings you news and suggestions on the Pestana Group, Hotels & Resorts, Pousadas de Portugal and their destinations. In this edition, we have a look at ourselves and cover the Algarve. In the year that it won two important tourism awards, competing against other main regions in Europe, the Algarve can now boast the title of Best Beach Destination and Best Golf Destination. Two different titles for two different realities. The one that chooses the Algarve as the best beach resort in Europe, tends to remind us of the importance of our sea and our coast and of how the Algarve coast has maintained almost all of its characteristics: a coastline of cliffs or huge sandy beaches, a calm sea of pure water and a perfect climate throughout most of the year.

The choice of the Algarve as Best Golf Destination, above all comes as a reward for the decades of investment in infrastructure and human resources. It was the work of many, including the Pestana Group and was based on the desire to show the true value of the Algarve and especially that the Algarve is a destination for all months of the year.

P.S. The Pestana Group continues to grow. When my father inaugurated the first Pestana hotel, I would never have guessed that in 2013 we would also be in the mythical city of Casablanca.

Michael Curtiz realizou Casablanca em 1942. O filme, uma adaptação ao cinema da peça “Everybody Comes to Rick’s”, é uma história de amor em plena Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este contexto de conflito, já vagamente esquecido, é a principal razão da sua perenidade nas listas dos filmes mais românticos de sempre.

Rick, interpretado por Humphrey Bogart no seu primeiro papel como herói romântico, é um cínico e duro exilado americano, determinado a ter uma existência tanto quanto possível tranquila depois de uma enorme actividade política, quer com a Resistência Francesa, em Paris, quer como brigadista na Guerra Civil Espanhola, é agora dono do mais famoso clube de Casablanca, uma cidade literalmente dividida pela Guerra. Ilsa, interpretada por Ingrid Bergman, é a mulher que partiu o coração a Rick no dia em que, sem explicação, abandonou Paris. Regressa agora com Lazlo, o seu marido, herói perseguido da luta contra o nazismo, que ela julgava morto num campo de concentração quando se apaixonou por Rick.

O seu reencontro, ao som de “As Time Goes By”, marca o início do tormento que acompanha a dúvida: Fugirem juntos ou Ilsa acompanhar Lazlo na sua luta contra Hitler.

E é este vacilar entre coração e ética que fez e fará sofrer todos os que o vêem “Casablanca”. Nós queremos que eles fiquem juntos, eles querem ficar juntos, mas aqueles tempos são urgentes e maiores do que o amor. Rick e Ilsa serão juntos no sacrifício: separam-se para lutar contra o horror que cobria o mundo. Nós choramos, aliviados que o lado justo vença, com esperança de que fosse nossa aquela história e faríamos exactamente o mesmo.

Michael Curtiz directed Casablanca in 1942. The film, an adaptation of the theatre play, “Everybody Comes to Rick’s”, is a love story set in the midst of the Second World War. The conflict context, that has now been vaguely forgotten, is the main reason for its perennity on the list of the most romantic films of all times. Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart, in his first romantic hero role, is a cynic and tough exiled American, determined to have a calm as possible existence after enormous political activity, both with the French Resistance in Paris and as a Brigadier during the Spanish Civil War. Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, is the woman who broke Rick’s heart on the day she left Paris without any explanation. She returns now with Lazlo, her husband, a hero persecuted in the struggle against Nazism, who she thought had died in a concentration camp when she fell in love with Rick.

Their reencounter, to the sound of “As Time Goes By”, marks the start of the torment that accompanies doubt: To run away together or Ilsa to accompany Lazlo in his fight against Hitler?

It’s this wavering between the heart and ethics is what made and will continue to make everyone who sees “Casablanca”, suffer. We want them to stay together, they want to stay together but those days are more urgent and greater than love. Rick and Ilsa will be one in sacrifice: they separated to fight against the horror that had taken over the world. We cry, relieved that the fair side wins, in the hope that if that were our story, we would do exactly the same.

Uma Canon D5 não consegue captar tudo o que se passa nesta cidade. Ao final do dia, na marcha entre o trânsito que se arrasta por uma das enormes avenidas que irradiam da Place Des Nations-Unies, o centro de Casablanca, percebemos que o constante movimento do mundo passa por África. Casablanca foi sempre uma cidade de mercados e trocas, negócios e comércios.

Por aqui andaram fenícios, romanos, berberes e europeus, todos à procura das fortunas da confluência de rotas terrestres no calmo porto marítimo da costa atlântica. Hoje, todos dirão que Marrocos e Casablanca pouco têm em comum. Casablanca, cidade que ficou conhecida por um certo filme, é no essencial uma criação do colonialismo francês. Os seus grandes boulevards, os edifícios Art Noveau, as casas Art Deco e os palácios Neo-mouriscos, dão a esta cidade de quatro milhões de habitantes (rumores não oficiais atiram esse número para oito) uma distância clara em relação a outras grandes cidades marroquinas como Fez ou Marraquexe.

Este passado e a sua grandeza decadente – em que o paralelo com cidades-museu como Havana talvez não seja despropositado – convive hoje com as torres de escritórios. Na marcha lenta do trânsito de fim de dia, uma grande avenida de Casablanca é o espelho da continuação da história de uma cidade que nunca foi, de alma e coração, totalmente marroquina. Auditores americanos, engenheiros alemães, bancos sauditas, telecoms francesas, todos têm sede em “Casa” e todos contribuem para o sonho de prosperidade desta cidade.

A Canon D5 is not enough to capture everything that goes on in this city. At the end of the day, stopped in the traffic that drags along the enormous avenues that flow from the Place Des Nations-Unies, the centre of Casablanca, we realise that the constant movement of the world passes through Africa. Casablanca always was a city of trade, business and commerce. Phoenicians, Romans, Berbers and Europeans all passed through here, in search of the fortunes of the confluence of land routes heading to the calm maritime port of the Atlantic coast. Today, everyone will say Morocco and Casablanca have little in common.

Casablanca, the city that became famous thanks to a certain film, is essentially a creation of French colonialism. Its great boulevards, the Art Nouveau buildings, the Art Deco houses and the Neo-Moorish palaces, place this city of four million inhabitants (unofficial rumours claim that the figure is in fact eight) at a clear distance in relation to the other large Moroccan cities such as Fez or Marrakesh. This history and the city’s decadent grandiosity (it may not be unreasonable to compare this city to other museum cities such as Havana), nowadays co-exist with office tower blocks. In the slow pace of the end of day rush hour traffic, the great avenue of Casablanca is the mirror of the continuation of a city that was never totally Moroccan, in heart and soul. American auditors, German engineers, Saudi banks, French telecoms, all have their headquarters in “Casa” and all contribute to this city’s dream of prosperity.

Os olhos de Xana Nunes adiantam-se para falarem antes de tudo. O poeta brasileiro Manuel Bandeira tem um poema assim, sobre uns olhos assim, que nasceram e ficaram dez anos à espera que o resto do corpo nascesse. Filha da Avenida de Roma, bairro de arquitectura modernista da cidade de Lisboa e o preferido do Cinema Novo, Xana Nunes faz parte da primeira geração portuguesa que viveu a liberdade absoluta e que dessa liberdade fez uso absoluto. O que torna fascinante esta geração é que quase tudo estava por ser feito, e encontrou uma espécie de país de folha em branco onde tudo estava por escrever. Estes filhos da Revolução, como o foi Xana Nunes, foram revolucionários na maneira como entenderam a promessa do país que se abria à sua frente e na obrigação sincera de o mudarem, fosse pela música, pelas artes plásticas, pelo cinema, pela dança ou pela moda. Estas últimas duas foram o terreno de Xana Nunes, primeiro como aluna do coreógrafo Rui Horta e depois como manequim dos tempos em que arrancava a moda portuguesa. O perfil de Xana Nunes é sereno e sem interrupções. O que aprendeu com Rui Horta usaria como manequim, o que aprendeu como manequim usaria como empresária, a partir da agência de comunicação que fundou. O que aprenderia na relação diária com as marcas que representou e aconselhou durante mais de uma década, usaria para o lançamento do Lisbon Week, a semana de Setembro em que Lisboa e os lisboetas se redescobrem.

Xana Nunes’ eyes anticipate what she is about to say. The Brazilian poet, Manuel Bandeira wrote a poem like that, about eyes like that, which were born and had to wait for ten years before the rest of the body was born. From Avenida de Roma, a district of modernist architecture in Lisbon and the preferred area of the “Cinema Novo” (“New Cinema”) genre, Xana Nunes belongs to the first Portuguese generation to enjoy absolute freedom and who made absolute use of this freedom. What makes this generation so fascinating is that there was so much to be done. Portugal was like a blank sheet of paper waiting to be written on. These children of the Revolution like Xana Nunes, were revolutionaries in the way they perceived the promise of the country that was opening up to them and their sincere obligation to change it, be it through music, art, cinema, dance or fashion. The latter two were Xana Nunes’ areas, initially as a student of the choreographer Rui Horta and later as a model, in the days when Portuguese fashion was taking off. Xana Nunes’ professional profile is serene and uninterrupted. What she learnt with Rui Horta she would later use in her modelling work and what she learnt as a model she would later use as a business woman, at the communication agency she founded. What she would come to learn in her daily relationship with the brands that she acted as a consultant for and represented, for more than a decade, she would later use for the launch of Lisbon Week, a week in September when Lisbon and its people rediscover themselves.

Casablanca caminha a passos largos para ser uma praça forte dos negócios em África. Ao cair do dia, em praticamente todas as noites da semana, os restaurantes enchem-se de ocidentais e marroquinos. O clima é quase eufórico e os preços fazem uma selecção natural do público. Quem conhece Casablanca diz que depois de uma reunião de trabalho, é à noite que todos os negócios se concretizam.

Casablanca is well on its way to becoming one of the strong business centres of Africa. At nightfall, on practically every day of the week, restaurants are packed with Westerners and Moroccans. Those who know Casablanca well, say that after a business meeting, it’s at night that the deals are closed.

A ROTA PARA TASSEMSIT The Route to Tassemsit PAUL BOWLES Escritor americano American writer (1910-1999)

Paul Bowles marcou a definição do que é ser um expatriado: figura magra e misteriosa, de cigarro entre os dedos, fato assertoado e espírito solitário, foi um dos últimos sobreviventes da geração de intelectuais americanos que a partir da década de 30 se começaram a estabelecer em Marrocos. Muito para lá do estereótipo de uma certa decadência e fluidez, Paul Bowles foi um homem de trabalho. Escreveu romances, contos e poemas, traduziu do espanhol, do francês e do arábe, compôs para cinema e teatro e foi, sempre, um respeitado etnólogo musical. As Viagens de Paul Bowles fazem parte do ar desse outro tempo, no qual estes longos e profundos relatos eram olhados pela imprensa como sérias missões literárias…

Paul Bowles epitomised what being an expatriate is all about: a slim and mysterious figure, cigarette between his fingers, a double-breasted suit and a solitary spirit, he was one of the last survivors of a generation of American intellectuals who started to settle in Morocco at the beginning of the 30s. Far beyond the stereotype of a certain decadence and fluidity, Paul Bowles was a working man. He wrote romances, tales and poems, translated from Spanish, French and Arabic, wrote screenplays and plays and was always a respected music ethnologist. “Travels” by Paul Bowles belongs to the days when these long, profound stories were viewed by the press as serious literary missions….

Sempre que saio de Tânger para ir ao Sul, a minha casa adquire o aspecto de um sítio onde acabou de suceder algum desastre.

Na noite anterior à minha partida para esta particular viagem prevalecia a desordem habitual. Havia caixotes de comida enlatada e molhos de mantas e almofadas na sala de estar. O equipamento de gravação estava espalhado por uma área desnecessariamente vasta, pelo que as braçadas de fios sobresselentes ocultavam o fogão portátil a gás butano e as caixas de bobinas cobriam os mapas de estradas. Os criados haviam-me induzido a assentar por escrito as especificações das coisas que eles esperavam que eu me lembrasse de lhes comprar enquanto andasse fora.

Fatima queria uma manta de lã branca com pelo menos oito metros de comprido, e Mina um tabuleiro circular prateado com três pernas destacáveis. Seguindo a tradição, elas haviam insistido escrupulosamente em que tais coisas fossem pagas com os seus salários após o meu regresso, e eu concordara, embora cada um

quilómetros por Marrocos, gravando música para a Biblioteca do Congresso com uma bolsa da Fundação Rockefeller. A qualidade do material era uniformemente esplêndida; no entanto, temos sempre as nossas preferências. Após muitas audições, as fitas que mais me interessaram foram aquelas que eu gravara em Tafraout, uma região no Anti-Atlas Ocidental. Como só conseguira obter seis selecções por lá, queria agora regressar e tentar arranjar mais algumas, embora desta vez tivesse de ser com o apoio do Governo marroquino. Segundo o meu itinerário do interior havia uma distância de 1370 quilómetros a cobrir entre Tânger e Tafraout, e as estradas seriam razoavelmente boas durante todo o caminho. A estrada directa para Marraquexe via Rabat passa por terreno plano e tem algum trânsito. A rota interior pouco frequentada que nós usámos, a qual atravessa os contrafortes ocidentais das montanhas do Rife e passa pelo Médio Atlas, demora mais um dia, mas é belíssima em todos os pontos.

A etiqueta marroquina exige que quando o dono da casa vai em viagem traga consigo lembranças para todos. Quanto mais longe for e mais tempo se demorar, mais substanciais deverão ser esses presentes.

Neste país, a partida é muitas vezes uma actividade anterior ao alvorecer. Após haver terminado a meia hora de chamadas à oração do princípio da manhã e os muezins terem apagado as luzes no alto dos minaretes, ainda resta uma hora de escuridão. O coro dos galos arrasta-se pelos ares sobre os telhados até ao romper do dia. É um bom momento para partir, logo que o céu começa a aclarar a oriente e os objectos se tornam negros e nítidos contra ele. Quando o Sol se levantara já Christopher e eu estávamos bem dentro do território, rolando a uma velocidade que só era determinada pelas curvas e pelo ocasional gado na estrada. A estrada principal deserta, que se avistava até muito longe, ia medindo os quilómetros dos grandiosos campos, e ao longo do caminho não havia painéis publicitários a interporem-se entre nós e a terra.

Após Xauen seguimos durante algum tempo o rio Loukis, aqui um curso de água límpido e veloz no fundo de um estreito vale. Christopher, que ia a conduzir, sugeriu que era altura de almoçarmos. Parámos, estendemos um tapete sob uma velha oliveira e comemos, ouvindo o som da água a saltitar sobre as pedras ao nosso lado. Os montes escarpados erguiam-se de ambos os lados do rio; não se avistava qualquer pessoa ou habitação. Retomámos o caminho. Meia hora depois virámos um curva e deparámos com um homem deitado de borco na superfície pavimentada da estrada, com a sua djellaba cobrindo-lhe a cabeça. Pensei imediatamente: está morto. Parámos, saímos do carro, endireitámo-lo um pouco e ele sentou-se a esfregar os olhos, murmurando, incomodado por o terem acordado. Explicou que aquela estrada limpa e lisa era um sítio muito melhor para se dormir do que o terreno pedregoso ao lado dela. Quando lhe objectámos que assim ele facilmente poderia ser morto, respondeu com fina lógica de camponês que até agora ainda ninguém o matara. Não obstante, levantou-se e caminhou alguns metros para fora da estrada principal, onde tornou a deitarse num único movimento, puxou o capuz da djellaba de modo a 17

envolver-lhe a cabeça, e regressou ao confortável mundo do sono.

No dia seguinte estava mais calor. Subimos ao longo da lentamente crescente rampa do Médio Atlas, uma paisagem acinzentada, brilhante. As luzidias folhas dos carvalhos enfezados e até o leito rochoso exposto por baixo reflectiam a quente luz do Sol lá no alto.

Mais adiante, na encosta sul das montanhas, passámos pelo corpo mutilado de um grande macaco que não conseguira sair da estrada com rapidez suficiente — uma visão invulgar por aqui, uma vez que os macacos normalmente se mantêm longe das estradas principais.

Passámos toda a tarde acelerando ao longo do vale que desce gradualmente entre o Médio Atlas e o Grande Atlas. O Sol pôs-se à nossa frente e a Lua ergueu-se atrás de nós. Bebemos café do termo e esperámos chegar a Marraquexe a tempo de encontrar comida.

O novo regime marroquino impôs horários de fecho antecipado numa terra onde até aí a noite era uma mera continuação do dia.

Após o brilho lunar daquelas terras vazias, o oásis parecia escuro. A estrada principal seguia em frente durante quilómetros entre altos muros de argila e canaviais; o negro rendilhado das tamareiras erguia-se acima deles, contra o brilhante céu nocturno. Subitamente os muros e o oásis chegaram ao fim, e lá adiante, postado no meio do cascalho do deserto, estava um grande e novo cinema enfeitado com tubos de néon colorido, as barracas de lata e de palha de um bidonville aglomeradas à sua volta tal como as moradias de uma aldeia ao redor da igreja. Em Marrocos os muito pobres não vivem no campo nem na cidade; vão para o exterior das muralhas da povoação, constroem estas colónias de abarracamentos de ar desesperado com os materiais que conseguirem arranjar, e ali ficam.

Marraquexe é uma cidade de grandes distâncias, plana como uma tábua. Quando sopra o vento, o pó rosado das planícies entendese para o céu, obscurecendo o Sol, e toda a cidade, pintada com uma demão da terra rosada sobre a qual assenta, reluz em vermelho sob a luz cataclísmica. À noite, da janela de um carro, não parece diferente de uma das nossas cidades ocidentais: longos quilómetros de candeeiros de rua entendendo-se em linha recta sobre a planície.

Somente durante o dia se vê que muitas dessas luzes iluminam apenas extensões vazias de palmeirais e deserto. Ao longo dos anos, as franjas exteriores da medina passara a permitir a circulação de

automóveis e das carruagens puxadas por cavalos, das quais ainda existem muitas, mas é necessário um homem destemido para conduzir o seu carro no labirinto de vielas em serpentina cheias de moços de fretes, bicicletas, carroças, burros e vulgares pedestres.

Além disso, a única maneira de se ver alguma coisa na medina é caminhando, Para se estar realmente presente, é preciso ter-se os pés sobre a poeira, ou ter-se a consciência do odor quente e poeirento dos muros de argila junto ao nosso rosto.

Na noite em que chegámos a Marraquexe, Christopher e eu fomos a uma café no coração da medina. No telhado, sob as estrelas, espalharam esteiras, mantas e almofadas para nós e ali nos sentámos bebendo chá de menta, saboreando o ar fresco que começa a agitarse sobre a cidade depois da meia-noite, quando o calor do Sol nela armazenado finalmente se dissipa. A certo momento, do silêncio da rua lá em baixo veio uma sucessão de gritos estranhos e explosivos.

Debrucei-me sobre o parapeito e espreitei uma viela mal iluminada três pisos mais abaixo. Entre os poucos caminhantes tardios estava a dançar uma figura impossível, fantasmática. Galopava, parava, fazia grandes saltos no ar que desafiam a gravidade como se a terra sob os seus pés a estivesse a ajudar. Quando a figura se veio colocar por baixo do café, consegui identificá-la como sendo a de um homem novo poderosamente constituído; estava quase nu. Vi-o desaparecer na escuridão. Regressou quase de imediato, fazendo a mesma dança inspirada, de vez em quando correndo selvaticamente na direcção dos outros pedestres, mas sempre parando a tempo de evitar tocar-lhes. Andou para trás e para a frente na viela dessa maneira durante um quarto de hora, ou perto disso, antes que o qahaouaji subisse de novo a escada até ao terraço onde estávamos sentados. Quando ele chegou disse-lhe casualmente: — O que se está a passar lá em baixo? — Embora na maior parte dos sítios tivesse sido bastante evidente que andava um doido à solta pelas ruas, em Marrocos há distinções subtis a fazer. Sucede por vezes que a pessoa seja meramente santa, ou esteja maldisposta.

— Ah, pobre homem — disse o qahaouaji. — Ele é meu amigo.

Andávamos juntos na escola. Ele tinha boas notas e jogava bem futebol.

— O que aconteceu?

the country, rolling along at a speed determined only by the curves and the occasional livestock in the road. The empty highway, visible far ahead, measured off the miles of open, mountainous countryside, and along the way no billboards came between us and the land.

During the past year I had traveled some 25,000 miles around Morocco, recording music for the Library of Congress. The tapes that interested me most were the ones I had recorded in Tafraout, a region in the western Anti-Atlas. Since I had managed to get only six selections there, I wanted to go back there now and try to find some more. By my inland itinerary there was a distance of 855 miles to be covered between Tangier and Tafraout, and the roads would be fairly good all the way. The direct route to Marrakech via Rabat traverses flat terrain and has a certain amount of traffic.

The unfrequented interior route we used, which leads through the western foothills of the Rif Mountains and over the Middle Atlas, takes an extra day but is beautiful at every point.

Beyond Xauen [Chaouen] we followed for a while the River Loukkos, here a clear swift stream at the bottom of a narrow valley.

We stopped for lunch, my driver and I, spread a rug under an old olive tree and ate, listening to the water skipping over the stones beside us. The hills rose steeply on both sides of the river. Not a person or a dwelling in sight. We started out again.

A half hour farther, we rounded a corner and came upon a man lying face down on the paved surface of the road, his djellaba covering his head. Immediately I thought: “He’s dead”. We stopped, got out, prodded him a bit, and he sat up, rubbing his eyes, mumbling, annoyed at being awakened. He explained that the smooth road was a better place to sleep than the stony ground beside it. When we objected that he might easily be killed, he replied with the fine peasant logic that no one had killed him yet. Nevertheless, he got up and walked a few yards off the highway, where he slumped down again all in one motion, wrapped the hood of his djellaba around his head, and went back into the comfortable world of sleep.

The next day was hotter. We climbed along the slowly rising ramp of the Middle Atlas, the great range that lies between the Rif and

Whenever I leave Tangier to go south, my home takes on the look of a place struck by disaster. The night before I set out on this trip the usual disorder prevailed. There were crates of canned foodstuffs and bundles of blankets and pillows in the living room. The portable butane-gas stove and boxes of recording tape covered the road maps.

I said good-by to my servants, who had induced me to write down the things they hoped I would buy for them while I was down there.

Fatima wanted a white woolen blanket at least eight meters long, and Mina a silver-plated circular tray with three detachable legs.

Following tradition, they had scrupulously insisted that these things were to be paid for out of their wages after I returned, and I had agreed, although each of us was aware that such deductions would never be made. Moroccan etiquette demands that when the master of the house goes on a journey he bring back souvenirs for everyone.

The farther he goes and the longer he stays, the more substantial these gifts are expected to be.

In this country departure is often a predawn activity. After the half hour of early-morning prayer calling is finished and the muezzins have extinguished the lights at the tops of the minarets, there is still about an hour of dark left. The choir of roosters trails on in the air above the rooftops of the city until daybreak. It is a good moment to leave, just as the sky is growing white in the east and objects are black and sharp against it. By the time the sun was up, we were far out in 19

the Grand Atlas, a gray, glistening landscape. The shiny leaves of the scrub live-oaks, and even the exposed bedrock beneath, reflected the hot light of the overhead sun. Farther along, on the southern slope of the mountains, we passed the mangled body of a large ape that had not got out of the road fast enough; an unusual sight here, since these animals generally stay far from the highways.

All afternoon we had been speeding down the gradually descending valley between the Middle Atlas and the Grand Atlas. The sun went down ahead of us and the moon rose behind us. We drank coffee from the vacuum bottle and hoped we would get into Marrakech in time to find some food. The new Moroccan regime has brought early closing hours to a land where heretofore night was merely a continuation of day.

After the lunar brightness of the empty wasteland, the oasis was dark. The highway went for miles between high mud walls and canebrakes; the black tracery of date palms rose above them, against the brilliant night sky. Suddenly the walls and the oasis came to an end, and ahead, standing in the rubble of the desert, was a big new cinema trimmed with tubes of colored neon, the tin and straw shacks of a squatters’ colony clustering around it like the cottages of a village around the church. In Morocco the very poor live neither in the country nor in the city; they come as far as the outer walls of the town, build these desparate-looking bidonvilles out of whatever materials they can find, and there they stay.

Marrakech is a city of great distances, flat as a table. When the wind blows, the pink dust of the plain sweeps into the sky, obscuring the sun, and the whole city, painted with a wash made of the pink earth on which it rests, glows red in the cataclysmic light. At night, from a car window, it looks not unlike one of our Western cities: long miles of street lights stretching in straight lines across the plain. Only by day you see that most of these lights illumine nothing more than empty reaches of palm garden and desert.

Over the years, the outer fringes of the Medina have been made navigable to automobiles and horse-drawn buggies, of which there are still a great many, but it takes a brave man to drive his car into the maze of serpentine alleys full of porters, bicycles, carts, donkeys and pedestrians. Besides, the only way to see anything in the Medina is to walk. In order to be really present, you must have your feet in the dust, and be aware of the hot dusty smell of the mud walls beside your face.

The night we arrived in Marrakech, we went to a café in the heart of the Medina. On the roof under the stars they spread matting,

blankets and cushions for us, and we sat there drinking mint tea, savoring the cool air that begins to stir above the city after midnight when the stored heat of the sun is finally dissipated.

Abruptly out of the silence of the street below, there came a succession of strange, explosive cries. I leaned over the edge and peered into the dim passageway three floors beneath. Among the few late strollers an impossible, phantomlike figure was dancing. It galloped, it stopped, it made great gravitation-defying leaps into the air as if the earth under its feet were helping. At each leap it yelled. No one paid any attention. As the figure came below the café, I was able to identify it as a powerfully built young man; he was almost naked. I watched him disappear into the dark. Almost immediately he returned, doing the same inspired dance, occasionally rushing savagely toward other pedestrians, but always stopping in time to avoid touching them.

He passed back and forth through the alley in this way for a quarter of an hour or so before the qahaouaji, having made the tea, climbed the ladder again to the roof where we sat. When he came I said casually: “What’s going on down there?” Although in most places it would have been clear enough that a madman was loose in the streets, in Morocco there are subtle distinctions to be made. Sometimes the person turns out to be merely holy, or indisposed.

“Ah, poor man,” said the qahaouaji. “He’s a friend of mine. We were in school together. He got high marks and played good soccer.”

“What happened?”

“What do you think? A women, of course.”

This had not occurred to me. “ You mean she worked magic on him?”

“What else? At first he was like this-” He let his jaw drop and his mouth hang open; his eyes became fixed and vacant. “Then after a few weeks he tore off his clothes and began to run. And ever since, he runs like that. The woman was rich. Her husband had died and she wanted Allal. But he’s of a good family and they didn’t like her. So she said in her head: No other woman is going to have him either.

And she gave him what she gave him.”

Juntas dedicaram-se a um almoço tardio no Pestana Palace, Hotel & National Monument, em Lisboa, (Classic Burger e água com gás) e juntas cruzaram perguntas e respostas para WINK. They are Alexandra Moura and Gisela João. The first, a singular figure of Portuguese fashion and Gisela João, a very original voice of the “fado” (dressed, not by chance, by Alexandra Moura). GISELA JOÃO: Esta é um bocado básica mas tem de ser feita.

O que é que te inspira?

ALEXANDRA MOURA: Tudo. A vida. Andar na rua, ver um filme, ler um livro…

GJ: Mesmo a andar na rua?

AM: Sim. Dou-te um exemplo: numa viagem que fiz ao Japão, a reparar na luz e nas sombras que via no chão, inspirei-me para uma colecção. Como o meu trabalho não é de tendências, mas sim de conceitos, tudo se torna possível.

GJ: Se pudesses escolher fazer parte de uma banda, qual escolhias? Como sei que gostas de música tinha de fazer esta pergunta.

AM: De certeza que seria de uma banda de rock. Qualquer coisa que já me tivesse marcado… Talvez os Sonic Youth. Se fosse uma banda de agora, os Interpol.

GJ: E o que é que tocavas?

GISELA JOÃO: This one’s a little basic but has to be asked. What inspires you?

ALEXANDRA MOURA: Everything. Life. Walking down the street, watching a film, reading a book…

GJ: Even a walk down the street?

AM: Yes. To give you an example, it was a trip to Japan, when I was paying special attention to the light and shadows I saw on the ground, which inspired one of my collections. As my work isn’t based on trends, but on concepts, everything’s possible.

GJ: If you could be part of a band, which one would you choose? I had to ask that question as I know you love music.

AM: It would have to be a rock band, for sure. One that had a strong impact on me… Maybe Sonic Youth. If it were a current band, Interpol.

GJ: What instrument would you play?

AM: Bass.

AM: Baixo.

GJ: Em que época gostavas de ter vivido, e quem sabe desenhar?

AM: Acho que no início da humanidade. Assim tinha oportunidade de criar tudo de raiz. Gosto de todos os conceitos que estejam ligados aos inícios.

GJ: Um sonho doido?

AM: Adorava ir para bem longe, talvez até à constelação de Orion… Como até já se podem marcar viagens para Marte, ainda há esperança este meu sonho.

AM: Se pudesses entrar numa máquina do tempo, onde é que ias?

GJ: Ia à Grécia Antiga, porque adoro aquelas histórias, aqueles espaços. Depois Egipto, e, se ainda pudesse, parava nos anos 20, em França. Acho que teria sido uma revolucionária destes tempos.

AM: Se acreditas, e eu acredito, que já vivemos muitas vidas, o que é que já foste?

GJ: Um gato. Sabias que os gatos já cá andam cá há milhares de anos e que se adaptam a todos os ambientes? Eu também sou assim, consigo adaptar-me a tudo.

AM: Então acho que já tenho a resposta para a próxima pergunta… Se fosses um animal serias um…

GJ: Gato!

AM: Branco ou preto?

GJ: Branco, acho que é a cor que me dá energia. Gosto de estar rodeada de branco, dá-me vida e acho que faz bem a quem está à minha volta. Além de que todas as cores estão no branco!

AM: O que é que queres ser quando fores grande?

GJ: Quero ser Avó e tratar dos meus netos.

GJ: What era would you have liked to have lived in, and who knows, designed?

AM: I think it would have to be the beginning of humanity. Then I could create everything from scratch. I love any concept that has to do with beginnings.

GJ: A crazy dream?

AM: I would love to go somewhere really far away, maybe to the Orion constellation… You can already book a trip to Mars, so there’s still some hope for this dream of mine.

AM: If you were to travel in a time machine, where would you go?

GJ: I would go to ancient Greece because I love all those stories, those places. Then Egypt and, if I could still go somewhere else, I would stop off in the 20s, in France. I think I would have been a revolutionary in those days.

AM: If you believe, as I do, that we have past lives, what have you already been?

GJ: A cat. Did you know that cats have been around for millions of years and that they adapt to all different environments? I’m like that, I can adapt to anything.

AM: Well, I believe I know the answer to the next question... If you were an animal you would be a…

GJ: Cat! AM: White or black?

GJ: White, I think it’s a colour that gives me energy. I love being surrounded by white, it gives me life and I think that’s good for the people who surround me. As well as the fact that all colours make up white!

AM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

GJ: I want to be a granny and look after my grandchildren.

ALGARVE PORTUGAL The Southwest Coast of Europe Chamam-lhe o segredo mais famoso da Europa. A distância e o mistério do Algarve vêm precisamente da dificuldade de lá chegar. Algarve tira o nome ao termo árabe que significa “Ocidente” e que tem sentido para quem navegava de porto em porto pelo Mediterrâneo Central e Oriental, e via esta parte de terra como o início do Ocidente, onde o sol tem o seu ocaso. Já para os povos do Norte, que mais tarde o conquistariam, “Algarve” era uma promessa de exotismo, oportunidade, e com a comodidade das cidades do Oriente, relatadas como espaços de prosperidade e abundância. O nome, portanto, resultado do imaginário de todos, acabou por ficar assim mesmo: Algarve.

They call it Europe’s best kept secret. The distance and mystery of the Algarve come precisely from how difficult it is to get there.

Its name comes from the Arab term for “West” which makes sense for those who sailed from port to port along the Central and Western Mediterranean and who saw this part of the land as the start of the West, where the sun sets. For the people of the North, however, who later conquered the “Algarve”, it was a promise of exoticism and opportunity with all the convenience of the cities of the East, reported as being places of prosperity and abundance. The name, hence a result of everyone’s imagination, ended up being exactly that: the Algarve.

Rocks ‘n’ Roll

A costa algarvia tem uma divisão natural criada pela sua paisagem. De um lado, o Barlavento, de que fazem parte Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique, Portimão, Silves e Vila do Bispo, com praias de falésias e formações rochosas em tons que oscilam entre o amarelo e o vermelho. Do outro lado, o Sotavento, nome dado à parte oriental do Algarve que se estende de Loulé a Vila Real de Santo António, já nos limites do rio Guadiana. The Algarve coast has a natural division created by its landscape. On one side, the Barlavento which includes Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique, Portimão, Silves and Vila do Bispo, with beaches of cliffs and rock formations in tones of yellow and red. On the other side, the Sotavento, the name given to the eastern part of the Algarve that extends from Loulé to Vila Real de Santo António, on the banks of the Guadiana River. A noite de São João, celebrada de 23 para 24 de Junho, uma noite de celebração cristã, é por aqui, pelo Algarve, também a noite em que se relembram as mouras encantadas. Quanto o assunto são tradições, mitos e lendas, é necessário procurar ganhar distância em relação à fantasia, mas parece que no castelo de Tavira existe uma moura encantada que, ano após ano, aparece nessa mesma noite para chorar o seu triste destino. Diz-se que é a jovem filha de Aben-Fabila, o governador mouro da cidade que desapareceu quando Tavira foi conquistada pelos cristãos. A história mete romance, claro, com o caso da grande paixão entre a jovem e um cavaleiro cristão, D. Ramiro. Foi numa noite de São João que tudo aconteceu. Quando D. Ramiro avistou a moura, impressionado tanto pela sua beleza como pela infelicidade da sua condição, resolveu subir ao castelo e quebrar o feitiço lançado pelo fugitivo Aben-Fabila. A conquista do castelo revelou-se impossível.

Perdido de amor e transtornado de fúria, o jovem cavaleiro entregou-se a uma luta cega contra o Islão, procurando ganhar no campo de batalha aquilo que perdera no amor.

Portugal is the country in Europe that has had its borders defined for longer than any other. Nevertheless, of all the divisions that can be made, the north and the south of the Tagus river, to a certain extent and very roughly, mark the Celts influence on this founding of Portugal and the Moorish influence of the lands located further south, easy targets for the Christian Conquest.

The Algarve, as it was the last region to become a part of Portugal, continues to be the best example of this other great civilisation which was the Islam of the Iberian Peninsula. The vestiges of a Moorish Algarve remain to this day.

There’s still Moorish blood around. All you need to do is to see the old part of cities such as Silves or Tavira, the maritime sciences, the architectural details of a civilisation dedicated to white spaces and devoted to cities, or the darker colouring of those born here. However, this Moorish heritage is also told in legends that are part of the Algarve’s memory. Listen to this.

St. John’s night, celebrated on the night of the 23rd June, a night of Christian celebration, is also, in the Algarve, a night for remembering the enchanted Moorish women. When it comes to traditions, myths and legends, it’s important to keep a little distance from the fantasy, but it appears that in the Castle of Tavira there is an enchanted Moorish woman, who year after year appears on that very night to lament her sad destiny. It is said that she is the daughter of Aben-Fabila, the Moorish Governor of the city who disappeared when Tavira was conquered by the Christians. The story has a romantic twist to it of course, with passion igniting between the young lady and a Christian knight, D. Ramiro. All of this took place on St John’s night.

When D. Ramiro saw the Moorish woman, as impressed with her beauty as he was by her unhappy condition, he decided to climb up to the top of the castle and break the spell cast by the fugitive, Aben-Fabila. Conquering the castle was impossible. Lost in love and overcome with rage, the young knight threw himself into a blind battle against Islam, intent on winning on the battle field, what he had lost in love.

TAVIRA O Algarve já foi todo assim. Convém lembrar o que o turismo de massas fez a grande parte da costa do sul da Europa para perceber que lugares como Tavira salvaram-se quase que por milagre. Para o interior, em direcção à Serra de Santa Maria, a grande área de Barrocal acolhe alguns dos laranjais mais bonitos do mundo, mas também as figueiras, alfarrobeiras e amendoeiras que dão a mistura de cheiros que definem o aroma deste Algarve ainda rural. No litoral, Tavira e as vilas limítrofes continuam a viver do mar. Se a pesca já não é o que foi, a cultura de bivalves na ria Formosa está em plena expansão, e a flor de sal é hoje um dos artigos mais procurados no “comércio delicado”.

The whole of the Algarve used to look like this. It’s worth remembering what mass tourism has done to most of the coast of Southern Europe in order to realise that it is almost a miracle that places like Tavira have saved themselves. Inland, heading towards the Serra de Santa Maria, the large Barrocal region is home to some of the most beautiful orange tree groves in the world as well as fig, carob and almond trees that exude a mixture of aromas that define this part of Algarve that continues to be rural.

On the coast, Tavira and the other villages on the border, continue to live off the sea. Although fishing is no longer what it used to be, shellfish farming is booming and fleur de sel is nowadays one of the most sought-after products in the “delicatessen market”.

Em Santa Luzia, uma linda vila de pescadores, temos a praia da Terra Estreita, também esta só alcançável através de barco. Mais a Oeste, a praia do Barril é ligada por um pequeno comboio que percorre uma linha de cerca de um quilómetro, herança da antiga armação de pesca do atum que ali existia. Sempre na mesma direcção, e antes de chegar à barra da Fuzeta, ainda temos a hipótese da praia do Homem Nu. Os difíceis acessos e o isolamento são a explicação concreta para o nome desta praia…

A ilha de Tavira estende-se por 11 quilómetros até a oeste, em direcção à barra da Fuzeta. Demarca-se em quatro diferentes praias e é seguramente das mais bonitas deste lado do Algarve. Sempre apoiada pela cortina de dunas que a separam da ria Formosa, a praia de Tavira, uma das que fazem parte da Ilha, alcança-se através dos barcos que partem de Tavira ou do cais das Quatro Águas.

In Santa Luzia, a lovely fishermen’s village, is the Terra Estreita beach, which can only be reached by boat. Further to the west, Barril beach is reached by a small train that runs along a 1km track, an inheritance from the former tuna fishing community that used to exist there.

Continuing in the same direction and before reaching the Fuzeta barrier island, there’s also the “Homen Nu” (Naked Man) beach. The difficult access and seclusion of this beach explain its name…

Tavira Island extends 11km to the west, towards the barrier island of Fuzeta. It is made up of four different beaches and is definitely one of the most beautiful ones in the end of the Algarve.

Sheltered by the curtain of sand dunes that separate it from the Ria Formosa, Tavira beach, one of the ones that are part of the Island, can be reached by boat from Tavira or from the Quatro Águas pier.

A Pousada de Tavira, Convento da Graça, localiza-se no espaço do antigo Convento de Santo Agostinho, fundado por D. Sebastião no século XVI. Hoje, como Pousada de Portugal, combina com sabedoria e simplicidade as linhas clássicas dos séculos de alterações sofridas no primitivo edifício com a atmosfera acolhedora e o equipamento moderno. Todos os quartos, e são 36, têm vista para o pátio ou para os jardins. Mesmo com a praia ali tão perto, a piscina exterior e as espreguiçadeiras são sempre uma hipótese para a leitura calma dos jornais da manhã ou para um aperitivo que remate o dia.

O projecto de reestruturação da Pousada esteve a cargo do arquitecto João Sousa Campos, responsável também pela construção dos novos espaços. Foi durante a construção destes espaços que foram descobertos achados arqueológicos de origem islâmica do século XIII. Estas descobertas obrigaram a alguns ajustes ao projecto inicial de forma a permitir a preservação deste legado que pode ser visitado no Bar Pateo Mouro.

The Pousada de Tavira, Convento da Graça, is located in the former Santo Agostinho Convent, founded by D. Sebastião in the 16th century. Today, as a Pousada de Portugal, it cleverly and simply combines the classic features of the centuries of changes that the primitive building has undergone with cosy and modern facilities. All of the rooms, and there are 36 of them, have a view of the patio or the gardens. Although the beach is right there, the outdoor pool with its sun lounges is also an ideal place to calmly read the morning papers or to enjoy an aperitif at the end of the day.

The Pousadas’ restructuring project was carried out by the architect João Sousa Campos, who was also responsible for the construction of the new areas. It was during these construction works that 18th century Islamic archaeological remains were found. These discoveries led to some adjustments to the original plan so that this legacy could be preserved and which can now be visited at the Pateo Mouro Bar. 42

Carapaus alimados, xerém de conquilhas, feijoada de choco, arroz de berbigão, sopa de peixe, ostras ao natural, sopa de lebre, queijinhos do Algarve. In general, whilst Portugal uses a lot of spices and seasoning, the Algarve’s cuisine tends to be more delicate, respecting the raw material’s original flavour, be it fish, that is always very fresh, meat, the abundant shellfish and even the sweets, almost always made using figs or almonds. The traditional Algarve cuisine is a serious case of simplicity and good taste, an almost ascetic cuisine and for that reason it’s very sophisticated. Um dos encantos do Algarve é que basta andar 10 minutos de carro em direcção ao Barrocal e à serra, ou seja, em direcção ao interior, para que a mudança de paisagem seja acompanhada pela mudança de hábitos e gentes. A alteração é tal que, quando se sentar à mesa de um restaurante é mais provável encontrar um ensopado de lebre do que um qualquer peixe assado. Estoi é uma pequena aldeia situada entre São Brás de Alportel e Faro. Quem aqui vem não vem à procura de praias e mergulhos mas de um outro Algarve, mais selvagem e desconhecido, e por isso mesmo mais bem preservado. Grande parte da história de Estoi deve-se a uma personagem local, José Francisco da Silva, homem nascido em 1840 e formado em farmácia que feito um grande proprietário rural, e com uma fortuna consolidada, adquiriu o palácio a um nobre local, Fernando Carvalhal de Vasconcelos.

Em 1909 estavam terminadas as obras de adaptação do antigo edifício ao gosto do seu novo proprietário. Para a composição deste hino ao pastiche rococó, José Francisco Silva contratou do bom e do melhor. A Estoi chegaram artífices de todo o género: da arquitectura à jardinagem, do estuque à azulejaria, da pintura à relojoaria, da escultura à marcenaria.

Num projecto da responsabilidade do arquitecto Gonçalo Byrne, a Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi foi concebida para dar aos seus hóspedes um ambiente de qualidade superior. As intervenções fizeram-se sentir nos edifícios do palácio, nas cavalariças e nos jardins e o compromisso conseguido a partir das dinâmicas criadas entre “novo” e “antigo” é de uma realidade sempre assinalada por todos os visitantes desta Pousada de Portugal.

One of the beauties of the Algarve is that all you need to do is drive 10 minutes towards Barrocal and the hills, in other words, inland, to see a change in the landscape accompany a change in habits and peoples. In order to compose this anthem to rococo pastiche, José Francisco Silva hired the very best. Skilled artisans, from all areas, came to Estoi: from architecture to gardening, from stucco to ceramic tiles, from painting to watch-making and from sculpting to masonry.

In a project by the architect Gonçalo Byrne, the Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi was conceived to provide guests with an environment of superior quality. Works were carried out at the Palace, the stables and in the gardens. The compromise achieved, between the dynamics created between the “new” and the “ancient” is something that all visitors to this Pousada de Portugal, comment on.

Em 2014 o Vila Sol volta a receber esta iniciativa em que estrelas do futebol inglês se defrontam no campo de golfe com as restantes equipas.

It was the British football manager, Sir Bobby Robson and his wife, Lady Elsie, who in 2004 instituted this tournament at the Vila Sol courses. Known for their good humour, the couple wanted to make this tournament not only a time to relax and meet up with friends but also an opportunity to financially support one of their charities in the Algarve: the “Refúgio Aboim Ascenção”. In 2014, the Vila Sol will once again host this initiative where British football stars compete on the golf course against the remaining teams.

Instituído em 1993, o European Senior Tour Qualifying School disputase desde 2001 nos campos do Pestana Golf no Algarve. No ano de 2014 a final joga-se entre os dias 3 e 6 de Fevereiro nos campos de Vale da Pinta, precedendo as qualificatórias do Silves Golf, Gramacho Golf e Alto Golf de 30 e 31 de Janeiro. Uma final que se espera mais um vez renhida pela disputa de um lugar entre campeões.

Instituted in 1993, the European Senior Tour Qualifying School has been taking place at the Pestana Golf in the Algarve since 2001. In 2014, the finals will be held between 3 and 6 February at the Vale da Pinta courses, following the qualifiers at Silves Golf, Gramacho Golf and Alto Golf on 30 and 31 January. Sagres e o seu cabo, o cabo de São Vicente, eram na altura o lugar onde a terra acabava e o mar começava. O mito diz, porque sobre isto não há qualquer documento escrito, que foi aqui que no século XV o Infante D. Henrique criou uma tercena naval, agregando à sua volta os cientistas e mareantes que desenvolveriam os novos métodos de navegar, desenhariam as novas cartas e adaptariam os navios que deram a Portugal o poder sobre os mares. Este grupo de homens, que ficará conhecido como Escola de Sagres, estará para sempre ligado, nem que seja pela força da representação do homem em combate com o mar desconhecido, à vila de Sagres. Naquele tempo eram pequenas as caravelas e grandes as dúvidas e os medos.

Sagres and its cape, the Cape of São Vicente, were at the time, the place where the land ends and the sea begins. Legend has it, although there are no written documents to confirm this, that it was here, that during the 15th century that Infante D. Henrique created a naval school, surrounding himself with scientists and seafarers, who developed new navigation methods, wrote new maps and adapted the ships that gave Portugal power over the oceans. This group of men, who would come to be known as The School of Sagres, would always be linked, be it by the strength of the representation of man in combat with the unknown seas, to the village of Sagres. The caravels were small and the fears great. Do visit the Cape of São Vicente, look out to sea and you will understand what we mean...

Para quem vem de norte, sempre pela Estrada Nacional 120, a entrada no Algarve acontece por alturas da vila de Aljezur e faz-se depois na direcção de Sagres. Aqui começa um Algarve diferente. Se o dos cartazes é o Algarve das praias de areia macia e mar azul-turquesa, dos pinhais verdes e do calor emotivo, o Algarve desta costa, que tem Sagres como referência, é o de uma paisagem mais contida e onde os elementos dominam. Aqui quem manda é o oceano Atlântico.

If you are already in the Algarve, you can get here following the Barlavento, heading west. If you are coming from the north, along the Estrada Nacional 120, the exit to the Algarve is near the village of Aljezur and then head towards Sagres. This is where a different Algarve begins. Whilst posters of the Algarve depict fine sand and turquoiseblue sea, green pine trees and emotional warmth, the Algarve of this coast, marked by Sagres, is a more contained landscape where the elements dominate. It is the Atlantic Ocean that is in charge here.

Desenhada por José Segurado, que com o seu irmão Jorge Segurado foi um dos destacados arquitectos do Modernismo Português, a Pousada de Sagres foi inaugurada em 1960, por alturas das comemorações do V centenário da morte do Infante D. Henrique. Serve isto para dizer que a Pousada, com todos os anos que passaram desde essa data inaugural, ganhou um charme que lhe vem dos pormenores dos seus interiores, muito inspirados no “Mar Português” e nesse período glorioso que foi o dos Descobrimentos. As referências à grande aventura portuguesa estão um pouco por toda a parte, em apontamentos que dão graça à robustez desta Pousada de Portugal.

Designed by José Segurado, who together with his brother Jorge Segurado, was one of the most important architects of Portuguese Modernism, the Pousada de Sagres was inaugurated in 1960, during the commemorations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante D. Henrique. This explains why the Pousada, all these years after its inauguration, has so much charm.

It is the details of its interior, strongly inspired by the Portuguese sea and the glorious period of the Discoveries. The references to the great Portuguese adventure are just about everywhere, evident in the little details that confer charisma to the robustness of this Pousada.

It is here, in this practically uninhabited little village inland that you’ll find the region’s best pizzas that are the recipes for success when you are starving after a day surfing and on the beach.

Praia da Ponta Ruiva Foram os tons arruivados da formação rochosa disposta a sul que deram o nome a esta praia. A calma, a amplitude do areal e os acessos difíceis fazem desta uma praia relativamente pouco povoada, mesmo nos meses de Verão.

It was the red tones of the rock formations at the south end that gave this beach its name (“Redhead Point”). The tranquillity, its wide extent of sand and the fact that it is difficult to get to, mean this a relatively deserted beach, even during the summer months.
