Strategic Plan Implementation Reaffirms “Best In Class” Status A Message from Katherine Schantz

Then in the first decade of this century, educators discovered “Pandora’s Box”- technology. Educators scrambled to keep up with the exponential growth of hardware and applications. At Lab we realized that our students are likely to be some of the top benefactors of the technological revolution. We began to build our network of connectivity and to weave technology into teaching practices. It became clear that the potential power of teaching and learning could be increased immeasurably with a thoughtful, futuristic view of technology.

With Lab’s foundation and the dynamics of the last two decades, Lab has a great opportunity for giant leaps forward in the delivery of a “Best in Class” education.

We are well positioned for remaining a pioneer with an inspired, research based education that will prove effective for our students of the 21st century. Our Strategic Plan is guiding this critical work.

“When it comes to strategic plans, the planning is the easy part. It’s the implementation phase that’s tough to accomplish.”

I’ve heard variations on that theme repeatedly, ever since we undertook the two-year process of creating an overarching road map for The Lab School. Several persons ruefully admitted that they knew of organizations whose strategic plans had never advanced beyond the paper on which the plan was printed. But I’m happy to say that’s definitely NOT the case with The Lab School’s Strategic Plan!

In the 12 months since our plan was adopted by the Board and unveiled to the community, tremendous progress has been made in embracing the plan’s recommendations, studying efficient and effective ways of addressing the tasks at hand, and making measureable strides toward fulfilling the plan’s number one goal: “Best in Class” status for The Lab School.

Best In Class When Sally Smith established The Lab School of Washington 45 years ago, the School had at its foundation the most inspired thinking of its time. The Lab School was the pioneer in developing innovative, arts-infused teaching methods, which proved to be both groundbreaking and remarkably effective. As to be expected, others began to replicate Lab’s teaching methods and respect Lab’s expertise.

In the 1990’s the Decade of the Brain, the research using brain imaging added a new level of efficacy to teaching students with learning disabilities. Functional imaging showed that students with reading disabilities used their brains differently to learn to decode and process language. Of equal significance, the researchers showed that our brains are responsive to teaching; that is our brains are “plastic” and reorganize based on input from our environment. Moreover, leaders in the field began to celebrate these differences in brain organization. Researchers introduced the ideas of neurodiversity, multiple intelligences, and “differences” to replace disabilities.

Educators began to understand the power of teaching to improve the pathways in a child’s brain for a task such as reading and the power of teaching to strengthen the “differences” that would lead to passions and careers.

Focused Work for Year One of Strategic Plan Curriculum Because teaching and learning have been enriched by research and technology, we are enthusiastically reviewing our curriculum at every level and piloting new practices. We are in an era of education when our well-proven practices can be elevated to an even higher level of effectiveness. For example, we are encouraged by the research on the power of the arts and responding with more cooperative learning between the artists and classroom teachers. We are turning our attention to “global citizenry” and how to use our foundation of experiential learning to place our students at an advantage. We are benefiting from the research in number sense to reduce the number of students struggling with this subject. We are ready to be bold in our curriculum design and practices.

Technology The entire school community including students, faculty, administration, board and parents is engaged in an intensive technology audit/assessment. We are studying the most exciting technological advances in our field and are looking for innovative ways to incorporate them into our programs. Our first steps included the addition of a substantial number of the smaller digital devices to encourage reading, writing, and guided practice in the math and sciences as well as many more laptops. We have changed how we introduce and train our students in technology with most positive results. In this next year, we plan to formalize our steering committees, and add an educational technologist who can work with the academic curricula committees. And of course, we are mindful of the need for a robust, reliable backbone for this rapidly increasing use of technology throughout the school.

Research Relationships Being at the vanguard of learning disabilities research is another key ingredient to “Best in Class” recognition. The Lab School is pursuing opportunities with the research and education departments of George Washington, Georgetown, and American Universities;

Meet Laurelle Sheedy McCready A most welcome addition to The Lab School of Washington’s leadership team, Laurelle Sheedy McCready, Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations, brings with her many years of financial acumen and business expertise. Her most recent position was Director of Finance and Administration for Washington’s National Presbyterian School, a position she held for nearly ten years.

our work with these institutions is progressive and illuminating. The Lab School is about to participate in an important new research study examining the relationship between learning disabilities and math. We are incorporating training from Project Zero, a study of creativity at Harvard University. And we’ve joined a nationwide consortium of other learning disabilities schools to explore innovations in mathematical problem solving. Clearly, The Lab School is serious about our leadership role in research.

Master Facilities Plan A “Best in Class” makes the best possible use of its facilities and grounds. We recognize that quality educational learning environments are equivalent to a third person in the room. Over the past year teams of professionals led by Geier Brown Renfrow Architects have examined the Lab School campuses from every possible angle. They have studied space allocation, frequency of use, condition and growth potential for each of our buildings and our grounds. We have identified the most widely held desires-additional common spaces where we can cross paths more frequently throughout the day, upgraded and larger spaces for the performance arts, redesigned classroom spaces, inviting entrances to the divisions, an innovative, cutting edge space for high school, and a layout of grounds and buildings communicates our strong sense of community. We want to be the leader in the integration and expansion of the uses of technology while continuing to preserve the best of educational methods of the past. We will not only maintain but expand upon our successful Academic Clubs, bringing theme and curatorial content into areas where it can be most effective.

Our plans are not without challenge. Committed as we are to remaining an urban campus and an active, well respected, and contributing member of our neighborhood, we will need to be creative and efficient as we explore ways in which to improve upon our facilities. Thankfully, we have GBR Architects, a creative, strategic Board of Trustees, an imaginative faculty and staff and students who are good at advocating for what they need to learn.

Baltimore Over the past year, Baltimore Lab School has embarked on a remarkable “Journey to Independence.”

The School has welcomed a new Associate Head, David Lightfoot, who has already shown exceptional leadership and a true knack for motivating the community. Together with David, the Board has begun the process of setting up Baltimore Lab School as a separate legal entity and is in the process of recruiting new trustees for the soon-to-be-independent School. There are many more details about Baltimore Lab School, including a profile on David Lightfoot and a tribute to retired Associate Director, Dick Meltzer, beginning on page 13.

Infused with energy and alacrity, the Lab community is in high gear, determined to implement our strategic plan so as to be a school ready for the future. Clearly, we are a more connected community now than before the Strategic Plan took hold of our imaginations. We’ve learned to collaborate in new and often surprising ways. We’ve benefited from the ideas of faculty, students, parents, donors and neighbors.

We’ve explored and evaluated visions for the future, all of which I find incredibly invigorating. I hope you do, too.

A native of Palm Beach, Florida, Laurelle spent most of her adult life in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut. She earned her MBA at Harvard University and has worked at the White House, on Wall Street, and for the Diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, among other interesting professional posts.

Speaking of her decision to leave NPS for Lab, Laurelle explains, “Lab has an important mission. I hope my skill set can help strengthen the infrastructure that supports the alchemy in the classroom.”

Laurelle and her husband, Ron, have six children between them, many with spouses and children of their own. In addition to spending time with her family, Laurelle enjoys her garden – “flowers, not vegetables,” she clarifies. She also takes pleasure in traveling; but although Peru, Bolivia, Central America, Ireland, and Europe have all offered wonderful experiences, “My heart remains in East Africa, particularly Tanzania, where my family lived for several years.” Her next destination?

Possibly Scotland or the Democratic Republic of Georgia.

Laurelle also loves to read. Her most recent recommendation: It Happened on the Way to War,

by Rye Barcott. She’s also a fan of Donna Leon’s detective series, set in Venice.

Fiscal Stability Implementing an ambitious Strategic Plan while maintaining the day-to-day fiscal health of the School demands diligent (and inspired!) financial management. I am pleased to welcome Laurelle McCready as our new Associate Head of Finance and Operations. In tandem with the Board and me, Laurelle will help give structure and direction to our financial sustainability.

A Community Where So Many Take the Helm

PALS, through support of our athletic teams, through the engagement of our teachers, or attendance at any one of the many events that each campus hosts almost every day.

During the quiet days of our summer vacation, when my family had reunited, far away from gadgetry and schedules and pressure-filled car rides, I began to reflect on the meaning of community. We had gathered with old friends in a place that was familiar and safe. I was happy there, realizing that I was a part of that community and it was a part of me.

Communities can and do happen everywhere – on a summer island, at work, in our places of worship, through friendships, among hobbyists, within specific geographic boundaries or anywhere else our lives happen to take us. But those elements don’t define what a community is. And they don’t describe what a community does.

A community is best described as the set of interrelationships that exist around a shared set of beliefs, interests and/or experiences. To thrive, a community must be full of active involvement, the exchange of ideas and some sort of give and take among its members.

Healthy communities can provide a sense of belonging and purpose, a common thread that helps us make sense of that which is around us. They are living organisms that are able to change and grow and adapt. And where those shared experiences and ideals cease to exist in a robust and healthy manner, communities can also fade away.

One of my greatest joys during my tenure as Board Chair has been to watch the Lab School community explode with energy, enthusiasm and passion, all driven by our shared belief in that wonderful vision that Sally Smith articulated all of those many years ago and our shared goal of providing the very best education possible for children who learn differently.

The Lab School’s campuses – Foxhall, Reservoir, and Baltimore – have never been more alive with a strong sense of community, a fact that gives me great confidence in the future of our school.

Community can be seen virtually anywhere you look. I see it in our faculty and staff and in the way they invest themselves totally in our mission and the children they teach. Community is evident in the active participation of our parent body, be it through

Community was on display during the strategic planning process when many parents jumped in with both feet and became extensively involved, with that and with the subsequent action items.

Community can be seen in our alums who return to campus to teach or tour or just to check in to let us know how they are doing.

The strength of our community can also be measured by giving – your direct support of Lab’s mission on ongoing operation. This has been one of the greatest – and most rewarding - success stories of our recent past.

It wasn’t long ago that our annual fund proceeds barely warranted a place on our balance sheet. Now, thanks to you, we have one of the most successful funds in the region, putting us on par with any of our independent school peers. Or consider the Annual Gala where more than a thousand people contribute and gather to celebrate The Lab School each year. And the list goes on.

Because of you, we have a community where people give and give generously. Know that it matters, and that the school is grateful for what you do. And I have to say it – keep doing it. Please.

Henrik Ibsen famously said: “A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.”

The Lab School is a strong and vibrant community where we are fortunate to have so many people who take the helm to do their part. The Lab School epitomizes the exchange of ideas and that active give and take necessary for a community to survive and thrive. I am proud to be a member of this community. I hope that you are too.

Trustee. Board Chair. Mentor. Generous Supporter. But most of all, “Friend.” The Lab School of Washington lost all this and more with the death of Bill Mattox in December 2010.

Father of Ben Mattox, ’08, Bill was the Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Trustees.

He was credited by many for helping create the “Lab School of Today.” Bill’s passion, pride, dedication, and belief in Lab shone through in all that he undertook on behalf of the School. He celebrated its philosophy and championed its mission. After his tenure as chair, Bill remained an active trustee, serving as Co-Chair of the Gala Corporate Committee and as an influential member of the Search Committee that appointed Katherine Schantz as Head of School.

His colleagues admired, trusted, and valued Bill as a leader and a guide. Current Board Chair Robert Mathias recalls, “Bill taught me everything I know about being a chairman – a deft hand and a subtle touch. I think what I loved most about working with Bill was the perpetual twinkle in his eye and his passion for ‘all things Lab’.” Vice-Chair Mimi Dawson remembers, “Bill was a Chairman who drove the Board in the right direction with a delicate touch – so much so they never realized they were being steered in more progressive direction than they may have wanted to go themselves. Everyone I have ever known who knew Bill Mattox adored him.”

Perhaps Senator Max Baucus summed it up best, at the tribute he gave at the 2010 Gala.

“Bill’s gentle leadership style helped put Lab on the map nationally and helped empower families in other communities.” That’s a legacy Bill Mattox would certainly be proud to leave with us.

“Backward Planning” Moves us Forward

Integral to “Best in Class” status is our school-wide effort to examine, revise, horizontally and vertically align, and enhance-where needed- The Lab School curriculum. Last year the high school faculty led this charge. John Aragona, member of the social studies department and Faculty Advisor to our highly competitive Debate Team and Lisa McMahon, Head of the High School co-ordinated this faculty effort.

In preparation, Aragona attended a week- long summer institute on Understanding by Design.

Throughout the school year in cross-departmental meetings, the faculty worked to prioritize learning goals around “essential questions” for student inquiry. Essential questions lead teachers to frame the most important elements of their coursework.

This is known as “backward planning,” determining the desired outcome before designing the content and methodology of the course, part of the highly acclaimed “Understanding by Design” (UBD) written

by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.

The High School will work to align each course with the following guiding tenets:

Next Steps Professional Development Curriculum Through focused training opportunities, the faculty will continue to clarify what our students need to achieve success in the 21st century, including technology, experiential learning, lesson formats, scheduling, and course offerings. Within the context of professional development, the faculty will consider the topics of: the depth of student knowledge, new skills for innovative times, experiences with reallife challenges within adult contexts, application of knowledge to complex tasks, and feedback loops between teacher and student- metrics that will be suited for evaluating a student’s readiness for “Life After Lab.” Faculty will attend conferences on Innovation, Learning and the Brain, Diversity to name a few already scheduled; this is just the beginning of our ongoing efforts to incorporate leading ideas on education in our changing times for our learners who need the best of directed instruction.

The faculty will continue its work to publish a unified High School curriculum that takes into consideration standards established by states and national testing agencies as well as the unique and highly valued qualities of a Lab School education. John Aragona explains,

“Naturally, the final result of this initiative is not an etched-in-stone curriculum map, but rather a conceptual framework of studentcentered learning principles-one that celebrates the diversity of Lab’s student body and the creativity of our teaching community. We’re excited to watch our work take effect in our classrooms and hope everyone will witness the positive impact it will have on the academic competence of our ambitious, talented High School students.”

Meet David Lightfoot “I love a good joke…and a bad one even more.” One of the first things that strikes you about David Lightfoot is his ability to find light and humor in the world around him. It’s telling that his childhood heroes include Ben Franklin, Harry Houdini, The Three Stooges, and Jim Henson: an eclectic mix of visionaries, problem-solvers, creative geniuses, and humorists. And it stands to reason that David Lightfoot will bring many of those same qualities to his new job as Associate Head of School at Baltimore Lab School.

After a national search, a committee of faculty, trustees, and Katherine Schantz, Head of School, determined that David possesses the passion, expertise, and leadership skills that will ensure a successful second decade for Baltimore Lab School. A multifaceted educator, David brings over sixteen years of independent school teaching and administrative experience to his new position. He joins Baltimore Lab School from The Pennington School in Pennington, NJ, where he recently served as Dean of Academic Affairs as well as Assistant Director of Pennington’s Center for Learning, a program designed to prepare students with learning differences for secondary education and successful adult life.

“I love to talk about how great kids are, and who they can become.

I can provide a stately demeanor when required, but prefer to roll up my sleeves, get to work, and have fun doing it.”

David Lightfoot describes himself as a problemsolver, both at work and “at play.” He’s an avid chess player, and loves the challenge of Sudoku and crossword puzzles. Logic games give him a happiness boost. A former actor, theater teacher and stage director, David is passionate about the vital role arts play in education. “I used to play the guitar and tinker with vaudeville, I enjoy the cinema and I love seeing shows on Broadway and off,” he explains, citing “Wicked” as one of his favorite all-time musicals.

He enjoys reading science fiction – Douglas Adams’ “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” tops his list – and he’s an intrepid cook, always trying new recipes from varied world cuisines.

Together with his wife, Roxanne, David has done a considerable amount of travel. They’ve hiked the mountainous regions of our country and have visited Ireland, England, Spain, France, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt. For now, the Lightfoots are content exploring their new neighborhood, wandering around Fells Point and Harbor East, snapping photos, with their nine-year-old poodle, Cody, by their side.

David is also enjoying getting to know the welcoming Baltimore Lab School community. If you haven’t already done so, make a point of introducing yourself to Mr. Lightfoot. Feel free to start the conversation with, “Have you heard the one about…”

Thank You, Dick Meltzer After 28 years with an organization, many folks are content to simply bide their time. That was never the case with our friend, advocate, and leader Dick Meltzer. With tireless energy and unfailing enthusiasm for both Lab Schools, Dick continually challenged himself…and in the process motivated others to raise their professional bar higher as well.

Dick’s unique ability to connect equally with students, faculty, and parents helped him to be effective in a range of teaching and administrative roles. A firm believer in Sally Smith’s teaching philosophy, Dick began his tenure with The Lab School of Washington as a teacher and then Dean of Students. He led both the Junior High and High School Divisions in Washington, investing 14 years in cultivating an outstanding program for Lab’s older students.

In 2008, Dick stepped into the role of Director of the Baltimore Lab School. He artfully translated The Lab School mission, vision, and methodologies in a cultural environment quite different from Washington, DC. His greatest accomplishment – and perhaps his greatest professional pleasure – was watching Baltimore Lab School mature to the point where it could become successfully independent from its “parent,” The Lab School of Washington.

Dick Meltzer retired in June. Students and staff surprised Dick with an Elvis-themed barbeque and party – the perfect sendoff for “The King.”

Dick and his wife, Diana, – another Lab School stalwart – are eager to begin the next chapter of Dick’s life. And his many friends at both Lab Schools are equally eager to see how that chapter unfolds.

Generosity Continues to Pick Up Speed Baltimore Lab School Development Report

Financial Aid Gifts

2011 was a banner year for fundraising at Baltimore Lab School. Not only did the Annual Fund grow by 8% for the second year in a row, but the School enjoyed a number of generous non-Annual Fund gifts, most notably in the area of financial aid.

A highlight of the year was our success in raising money for financial aid. For the third consecutive year we received $50,000 from an anonymous donor. We also received $50,000 from the Middendorf Foundation and $15,000 from a friend of Baltimore Lab.

The Annual Fund was co-chaired by the three of our dedicated board members Greg Stewart, John Magladery, and Elaine Christ. For the first time, the fundraising initiative enlisted the help of class chairs to make individual solicitations.

We are thankful for the efforts of Jennifer Aist, Lisa Childs, Karen Gordon-Davis, Mary Ellen Kokoska, Stephanie Mykins, Karen Riger, Jack & Isabelle Schorr, Nancy Weintraub, and Lisa Watson who served in this capacity.

We continue to welcome gifts-in-kind from parents and friends. Thanks to the help of trustee Greg Stewart, our biggest in-kind donor continues to be Xerox/Fuji Film. Through the company’s generosity we received 21 digital cameras and 30 memory cards to be used by the photography department. Xerox also donated a copier to be used for making prints of photos.

Growth of the Annual Fund was fueled in part by a significant grandparent gift and by a $10,000 donation from the Mary and Daniel Loughran Foundation. Many thanks to our friend John McDaniel and his wife, Ellen, for their continued support of Baltimore Lab. This year we received our first donations from alumni, an exciting and important step in helping assure the future sustainability of the school. We also received gifts from parents of alumni, and from an increased number of grandparents. In addition, an impressive number of our faculty and staff stepped forward to support the Annual Fund.

The parents of the students in our youngest class undertook a special fund raising effort to purchase iPads for that classroom. They were able to purchase 3 iPads, along with the necessary components, all of which are being used extensively.

What a lot of time and energy our parent volunteers invested in the academic year – and with such impressive results! The officers of the Parent Association of Baltimore Lab School (PALS-B) would like to thank each of you who stepped up to the plate to help make our 2010-2011 efforts so successful. A special thank you is owed to the committee chairs for organizing the many activities & events we held this year.

Throughout the year, PALS-B hosted numerous fundraising events, including Innisbrook, sales of our beautiful 12-month calendar, and our popular Spaghetti Dinner. Proceeds from these parentled efforts allowed us to fund numerous events and initiatives. The High School Halloween Dance, the Middle School Moving Up Ceremony, the Mark Jester and Happenstance Theater performance, and of course the many graduation-oriented celebrations and mementos were just some of the special moments made possible with support from PALS-B donations. We also sponsored several breakfasts and lunches throughout the year to show our dedicated faculty and staff just how much they are appreciated.

Parents, too, benefitted from projects and programs spearheaded – and frequently funded in part – by PALS-B. In September we launched our first PALSB central email address. Be sure to check it out: Palsb@labschool.org. We also continued our important and informative lecture series, which provided parents with the opportunity to gather in a comfortable, informal setting and gain valuable insights and parenting tips from experts. This year’s speakers included Fran Bowman (The Heart of the Matter), Katherine Schantz (BLS: Where are we Headed?), Jean Hinlicky (What’s New in Depression, Anxiety, & ADHD Treatment) and Brie Jewler-Bentz (Benefits of a Gap Year).

PALS-B is active in the greater community as well.

For the second year in a row, we provided volunteer support for Baltimore’s city-wide Artscape! Festival, the largest free arts festival in the nation. We also provided support for Baltimore Lab School’s open houses, which give neighbors and prospective parents a chance to see, firsthand, the many facets of our truly remarkable school.

It has been a great pleasure working with each of you. We thank you, once again, for all you do…and do so well!

China Trip : Raises Awareness, Answers Questions & Enriches Learning

What does it mean to be a “citizen of the world?” And what will it take for citizens of tomorrow to accept their vital role as an “environmental tide-turner?” These were two of the critical questions 15 High School students from The Lab School of Washington delved into on a daily basis during their 11-day trip to China this past August.

The school’s second study abroad trip was an integral part of Katherine Schantz’s vision for accelerating global learning at Lab. The trip was largely organized by High School Biology teacher Beth Frattali, with significant support from World History teacher Grayson Isenberg and Head of High School Lisa McMahon. The trio, along with Katherine Schantz, accompanied the students on their Asian adventure to study and lend volunteer support at species breeding and research centers across China.

So why China? Beth Frattali is quick to answer, “Pandas!” Through her work as a part-time teacher at the National Zoo, Beth has been participating in the giant panda program for several years, incorporating insights from that experience into her science curriculum at Lab. Students in her class were at first curious then motivated to foster “positive panda change”, as they studied about the endangered species. “They began to ask if they could travel to China and assist in the efforts to preserve the fragile panda population. My answer was, ‘Why not?’” explains Beth. Katherine Schantz heartily endorsed the idea; plans for the trip took nearly a year to unfold.

Working with the US non-profit Pandas International (www.pandasinternational.org) and the Canadian tour company Access China (www. accesschinatours.com), an itinerary was built that included stops in Shanghai, Bifengxia, Chengdu, and Ya‘an. Meanwhile, interested students were asked to submit a personal profile explaining their interest in the trip, outlining their aspirations, predicting their contributions, and extrapolating on the all-important topics of global citizenry and environmental tide-turning. “Interest was overwhelming,” says Lisa McMahon, “and making the cut was tough.

But in the end we wound up with an amazing group.

Every participant was accepting of different cultures, appreciative of the experience, and in command of an extraordinary wealth of historical and scientific knowledge that enriched their experience.”

The group was comprised of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

“When you think of a panda you usually see a cute and fluffy bundle. But what most people fail to realize is that the life of the entire panda species hangs in the balance because of low birth weight and loss of their main food source, bamboo. The Bifengxia Panda Center & Nature Preserve is trying to change that with artificial breeding

and coordinated programs to help save the pandas. I learned how much dedication could be given to one species that nearly died out. Other species, like red pandas or snow leopards, should be cared for in the same way.

I want to read more about endangered species and see what I can do for them. I have seen grizzly bears and bald eagles in Wyoming, and I want to help more.”

– Travis Martin, ’13 Grayson Isenberg points out that although pandas may have been the star attraction, the students were genuinely and deeply interested in the history and culture of the cities they visited. A resident guide, Michael, accompanied the Lab School team every day of the journey. “As we became more comfortable with one another, Michael became more and more forthcoming about his youth in China. The kids were fascinated by his stories about Tiananmen Square. It gave them a deeper appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy as American students.”

“poop scooping.” That last task may not sound like fun, but it students found it remarkably interesting. “Because the panda diet is bamboo based, panda poop is surprisingly important right now. It’s being studied as a possible bio-fuel. The students were able to observe scientists at work on this initiative – they could relate it directly to the ecological issues they’re exploring in class,” enthused Beth.

The students worked closely with volunteers from other countries and enjoyed family-style meals of local cuisine with diners of many ages and nationalities. “The importance of international cooperation is one of the most valuable lessons Lab School students can learn when they travel abroad,” observed Katherine Schantz.

As volunteers at the panda breeding centers, Lab School students engaged in a wide variety of service learning activities. They were able to hold and feed baby pandas, assist in behavioral training, and clean the environmental habitat – a polite way of saying,

After their communal evening meals, the entire Lab School team recapped their day with an hour or so of reflection. In addition to sharing funny stories and keen observations, students were asked to return to the trip’s key themes of global citizenry and ecology. “It was remarkable to hear their observations about what it takes to be an environmental tide-turner,” said Katherine Schantz. “These young people are inheriting an earth that demands a new level of ecological stewardship. The chance to observe exactly what that means and explore the difference one person can make will prove to be transformational for these students.”

Students returned from their trip eager to share their China experiences with the rest of the Lab School community. Each participant prepared a personal presentation of his or her experiences, which were part of a major art installation in The Castle Gallery. Included in the exhibition were documentary films, coffee table books, multi-media drawings, poetry, and journal essays.

A highlight of the trip for some of the students was their reunion with former Washingtonian, Tai Shan. Many DC children grew up visiting the baby panda at the National Zoo; his departure for China in 2010 was a bittersweet moment for area residents.

Lab School students were thrilled to see Tai Shan thriving at the Chengdu breeding center. They also enjoyed meeting his outgoing Austrian roommate, nicknamed “The Pandinator.”

“My participation in this trip will contribute to my growth as a global citizen in several ways. I feel that a global citizen is someone who is interested in and has a love for the world and everything in it – not just in one country or area but the world as a whole. From humans, to animals, to plant life, to sea life and whatever else – I feel a global citizen is someone that embraces nature and life as a whole who will want to save and help make the world a better place.”

From the get-go, the program was groundbreaking for Lab School. Faculty from the reading, science, drama, math, and art departments came together to brainstorm and collaborate, building the project together from the ground-up. “We met several times a month, sometimes once a week. Every member of the team was equally invested. It was a very joyful experience,” said Mark Jarvis, speaking for the group. Everyone agreed: even for a school that encourages collaboration, the Two Cities project led faculty to look at team work in a new and very positive light.

A Tale of Two Cities Proves Revolutionary for Students & Teachers Alike To paraphrase the opening lines of Charles Dickens’ masterpiece, last summer’s experimental, multi-discipline program at Lab could be summed up like this: “It was the best of times…it was the age of wisdom…it was the epoch of belief…it was the season of light…it was the spring of hope…we had everything before us… in short, the period was received, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”

“Our primary goal was that the program not look or feel like traditional summer school, with students moving from reading, to math, to science, to art classes. We wanted to offer an experience that wove all of the academic disciplines in a new way, a way that was experiential, lively, creative, and fluid,” explained Nancy Rowland, Associate Head of the Junior High School, who together with faculty members Shaun Miskell, Deborah Wise, and Mark Jarvis was instrumental in creating a five-week cross-curriculum program centered around deconstructing and recreating “A Tale of Two Cities.”

By design, the structure of the program was extremely fluid. Each day’s agenda was determined at a morning meeting, where students and teachers looked at the tasks at hand and determined the daily “to-do” list. The lack of rigidity was deliberate, taking students (and some teachers) out of their comfort zone, teaching flexibility and the joy of spontaneity.

As Deborah Wise enthused, “No two days were alike and everyone learned to adapt to that. Every day, kids would be part of a new team. They made new friends and learned to adapt to different group dynamics. It worked amazingly well. We were all stretched – and we enjoyed it!”

“One of our goals was to make certain that the program maintained the necessary level of rigor. We were having such fun. At the end of every day we’d check in and ask one another, “Is the rigor there?

Are we teaching the skills we need to be teaching?” The answer was always “YES!” says Nancy Rowland.

A Tale of Two Cities, with its rich history, detailed settings, and complex characters is uniquely suited for a program that strives to weave many academic disciplines into the research, staging, and production of a play. Whether recreating a French flag, learning to knit for costume design, measuring and building sets, or memorizing a song in a foreign language, or rehearsing spoken lines without the benefit of a script, students were exposed to all areas of Lab School academics while preparing for the grand finale: a stirring presentation for family and friends.

Technology played a role in the program as well.

“My classrooms have computers, but the theater does not,” explained Mark. “Thanks to the availability of iPads, I could pull up images for references throughout the production phase. They were a huge asset for those kids who are visual learners.”

Other students were able to track sections of text on Kindles, which were supplied by the school.

Theatergoers are used to receiving playbills with cast rosters and a brief play synopsis. Students enrolled in the Tale of Two Cities project took the idea one step further, writing in-depth analysis of the characters they portrayed and the lessons they learned over the course of the summer. “The idea for these souvenir booklets came late in the process, but the kids responded quickly and beautifully. The depth of their understanding is reflected beautifully in their writing.”

“This project had it all. It was arts-based, collaborative education writ large and made concrete. That’s what we do best. And I can’t wait to do it again, with a different text, next summer.”

Intermediate School Blogs Bring Science Classes & Academic Clubs “Home”

Great Books Foster Great Ideas in Youngest Lab Students Maya Angelou has commented, “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” The Lab School of Washington has taken that philosophy one step further by introducing the highly respected Junior Great Books program at the Elementary School level.

Designed by the nonprofit educational group, Great Books Foundation, Junior Great Books introduces the school’s youngest learners to the myriad pleasures of hearing, thinking about, and discussing important literature. In the classroom as well as at home, students listen to outstanding stories, chosen for their rich language and international range.

“Folktales from around the world figure prominently,” explains Elementary Curriculum Specialist, Jennifer Durham. Stories from Japan, Georgia, Nigeria, Scotland, Ethiopia, and Korea abound, “as well as stories by Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm, which some of our students may recognize, but have the opportunity to consider in a new light.”

With its Read Aloud emphasis and its guided Shared Inquiry™ discussion format, The Junior Great Books contributes to the development of a child’s oral comprehension, vocabulary development, critical thinking skills, and abstract reasoning. The program is based on the principals of dialogic reading; in addition to reading aloud, teachers and parents are guided to ask their young audience specific as well as open-ended questions, a strategy that has been proven to increase children’s comprehension skills. The Junior Great Books program is also known to enhance the critical characteristics of vocabulary and literacy development in early childhood. The program also supports social development, encouraging students to develop a hypothesis (“I think the hero acted this way because…”) and defend that position in a dynamic, supportive dialogue known as Shared Inquiry.

Professional training for classroom teachers and assistants is one key component of the Junior Great Books program, a feature that particularly impresses Jenn Durham. Teachers are guided to explain unfamiliar words, listen and respond to children’s questions, extend students’ conversations around the literature, and engage children in cognitively challenging oral language experiences. “The faculty’s response and the results they achieved were remarkable. We’re lucky to be offering this training to even more teachers and assistants this year,” stresses Durham.

The Junior Great Books program believes that the frequency with which a child reads or is read to is a significant predictor of his or her long-term growth and progress in reading. Enriching language skills is one of the program’s overarching goals. Early speaking and listening skills lead the way for future reading and writing skills; together they serve as the primary tools for all future learning.

Traditionally, children with learning disabilities are exposed to complex language after they’ve mastered the ability to decode. Jenn Durham is thrilled that Lab School elementary students using the Junior Great Books program understand, assimilate, ponder, and discuss literature at a level far more advanced than their reading ability would indicate.

“The Junior Great Books benefits all children, but especially the children in our school. It’s imperative that comprehension skills be taught before a child can fluently decode, and that is too often delayed in children with learning disabilities.” The fact that Junior Great Books is most often associated with Gifted and Talented classrooms is another source of great satisfaction for Durham. “The questions our kids come up with, their insights about character’s motives, the parallels they draw between stories are amazing. I don’t think any of us – teachers or parents – anticipated how remarkable the effect would be!”

As any Lab School student, teacher, or parent will tell you, Academic Clubs are one of the most powerful – and enjoyable – tools in the School’s teaching arsenal. Following a single, multi-dimensional theme throughout the year, young students enjoy experiential hands-on exploration of history, geography, literature, science, sociology, archaeology and art. Whether experiencing the rebirth of philosophy, painting, and literature in the Renaissance Club, gaining entrepreneurial insights in the Industrialists Club, or studying the layers of the atmosphere in science, students develop comfort and competency in a wide range of challenging academic disciplines.

But as any teacher and parent will also tell you, getting your child to share the highlights and accomplishments of their school day – no matter how exciting – is an age-old challenge. Once a student matures past the exuberance of elementary school, their answer to “What did you do at school today,” is often reduced at best to a shrug and at worst to, “Nothing.”

This year, the Intermediate Division teachers piloted a guaranteed conversation starter: Science and Academic Club blogs. They uploaded pictures; made links to resources, class work, and homework websites and documents; and wrote about what was going on in their classrooms.

Among their many benefits, the blogs – now in their second year – give parents an important insight into what’s happening in their child’s classroom, helping them frame conversations that based on observations gleaned from the blog content. “It’s much easier to have a meaningful conversation with your kid when you can say, ‘The Renaissance Club looks really interesting. Tell me about it’ or, ‘Do the steampowered boats you build in Industrialists Club really work?’” says Academic Club Coordinator Noel Bicknell. “It provides a concrete foundation for discussion.” Bicknell credits the blogs for helping parents feel better informed – and more enthused – about what takes place during their child’s school

day. “Parents will say, ‘I had no idea!’ They really appreciate the additional communication,” adds science teacher Steve Wolfe.

The blogs are also an important communication tool for the teachers themselves. A key component of the Lab School curriculum is the interlinking crossclassroom content. Busy teachers sometimes found it hard to maximize those connections. The blogs’ concise, informative format makes those connections more obvious and direct. The blogs – initially spearheaded by science teacher Steve Wolfe – help teachers stay abreast of the projects and progress being made in their colleagues’ classrooms. “We’re more closely linked than ever,” says Noel Bicknell.

Lab is a school that emphasizes “learning by doing.”

Noel Bicknell points out that it’s equally important for students to have the opportunity to sit back, reflect upon, and discuss what they’re learning.

The Intermediate School blogs foster that kind of higher-level thinking. “Students follow the blogs and post responses. The blogs give the kids a platform for articulating how they learn, what they enjoy learning, and what projects were most rewarding.” Helping students define their learning style has been an unexpected but valuable benefit of the blogs.

To foster an environment of trust, comfort, and safety, access to the blogs is not made public. Students and parents have designated passwords that enable them to read and post, without the worry of general public scrutiny.

The Intermediate School’s Academic Club blogs have been so popular that other departments are looking for ways to mirror and perhaps even expand the concept. Enhanced communication and a greater sense of community are significant outcomes of the blog “experiment” and important contributions to Lab School’s commitment to retaining status as a “Best in Class” school.

We launched the year with a parent survey to determine where we should focus our efforts: Staff Appreciation and Support (Room Parents, Staff Breakfasts, etc.); Communication (Calendar, Website, etc.) Community Building (Spring Fair, other events); and Finance.

Community Building was another parent priority.

Acting on feedback from parents, PALS worked to ensure that every class enjoyed a potluck social – often in the new Commons. We also reinforced the new family buddy program and gave funds to the school’s athletic department. And – thanks to your overwhelming support – the Spring Fair was, once again, a terrific success!

Our accomplishments over the past year would not have been possible without the tireless enthusiasm of our officers, committee and events chairs, and parent volunteers. Thank you for all that you do and for your continued involvement with PALS.

The Annual Fund helps pay the teachers, specialists and staff, maintains the property, fuels the programs, and helps fulfill the vision of The Lab School. In short, it provides the crucial income needed to support the current operating budget. The School relies on the generosity of our supporters to meet our annual expenses. With the help of more than 40 hardworking, enthusiastic – and persuasive – volunteers, 2010-2011 was a remarkable fundraising success: We surpassed our goal and raised $743,397, which was put to immediate use by the School. 26th Annual Gala Honors Remarkable Achievers The Lab School’s annual awards ceremony and dinner dance honoring Outstanding Achievers with Learning Disabilities has always been one of the most highly-anticipated events of the school year.

The 2010 Annual Gala followed in the soiree’s best traditions: lively, engaging, and enjoyable.

Adding interest to the 2010 event was the diverse professional backgrounds of the two exceptional honorees. Held on November 17 at the National Building Museum, the event singled out Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, the highest-ranking Hispanic Woman in the U.S. Army’s Combat Support Field; Ms. Kickbusch has also made significant contributions to students as founder of Education Achievement Resources, a program designed to help young people from southern Texas stay in school. Lab School Alumni Propel Their Talents around the World Some alumni completed high school at a school other than Lab. They are listed here by high school graduation year.

1986 Eamon Clifford works for the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 99, organizing local union efforts, running Board elections and assisting in political campaigns.

1999 Nicholas Cole lives and works in New York as a manager at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Lindsey Pohlman, a graduate of both Adelphi University and Emerson College, is currently a Dedicated Aide with the DC Public School System. Colin Duncan is a safety engineer/OSHA liaison at Foulger-Pratt Construction in Rockville, MD. He ensures safe construction through implementation of Federal, State and private safety guidelines.

1988 Sean Swartz graduated from Wilson High School, served in the Marines and attended Marymount University. He is now a real estate agent with Long and Foster in DC. A trapeze instructor, he is also busy working to establish Zip Zap Circus USA in Washington and is the proud dad of two sons. Bill Peterson is on an emergency response /mobile crisis team with the Department of Mental Health in Virginia, and writing fiction when he finds the time. David Ridgeway just returned to DC after living in Las Vegas where he performed with his band Achilleion.

1989 Tim Towell works atop a wind energy tower in northern Michigan. His team is repairing a critical part of the tower’s mechanics. Tim works for Vestas, where he and his team of 10 devised a way to make these particular repairs, saving the client $500,000. Tim also invented a series of safety procedures which are used by Vestas.

Lab Alumni Alex Malchow, learned to master his difficulty with reading at The Lab School. That was quite a feat. Even more remarkable is that Alex, now a junior at St. John’s College High School, would eventually team up with his dad, Board Member Hal Malchow, to write and publish a novel.

The creation of The Sword of Darrow is an inspiring story. Alex is very creative but did not learn to read until age nine. Until Alex mastered reading, father and son engaged in two activities: Hal read books to Alex, but the two also would tell “me-you” stories. In these stories, Alex would imagine a cast of characters and basic plot and he and Hal would take turns telling the story. Over a period of three years, these stories became an obsession. One day, when Alex was eight he said, “Papa, let’s not tell any more me-you stories. Let’s write a book.” Hal told Alex to develop a set of characters, which he did. They devised a plot and outlined 25 chapters. For each chapter, son and dad would discuss the plot and character development. Hal would write the narrative and read it to Alex, who would make comments.

Hal would write revisions then they’d repeat the process for the next chapter. In all, the first draft of the book took about two years to complete. Six years – and many rewrites later, BenBella Books agreed to publish the novel. The Sword of Darrow was

1991 Elie Goldbrenner is a shipping/multimedia/duplication operator at Videolabs in Rockville, Maryland. He and his wife have a newborn son and a 4 ½-year old daughter. Martin Sheehan is the Acting Branch Head for Imaging at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. He oversees a staff of scientific and technical videographers.

1993 Patrick Carey spent two years at George Washington University studying EMS management before leaving to become a paramedic. He moved to Georgia in 1999 and worked as a paramedic for Dekalb County for 7 years then as a flight paramedic with Rescue Air. Later Pat attended the police academy and now works as a police officer for the city of Social Circle, Georgia. He is married with one son and two stepsons. Anwar Fennell is enjoying his position as the Production Assistant for World Wrestling Entertainment in Hartford, CT.

released in May of 2011 The first book signing was held at the Lab School. Many of Alex’s classmates, friends, former teachers and fans of fantasy literature came out to support the publication. The book was printed in a standard version and a version designed to be best for dyslexic readers. All proceeds were donated to The Lab School of Washington.

Alex recently won the Remy Johnston Award given by the International Dyslexia Association of America (IDA) to an outstanding student and role model with dyslexia.

2010— 2011

1994 Vernon Cooke owns his own electrical contracting firm in Maryland. Vernon participated in this year’s LSAA Career Day. Jah-Mir Early has been living in London, England for the past 10 years. He works with children with autism. For the past two years he has worked as a teaching assistant, gaining the experience he needs to apply for a teacher training program.

1995 Lakia Floyd is taking online advanced degree courses through Walden University, working to complete a PhD in special education. Lorin Kaneff, is a graduate of Western Maryland College. Congratulations to Lorin and his wife Jill on their recent marriage. Tre Wullschleger lives on Nan-

2000 Danielle Eckhart painted the Music Mural in the hallway outside of the music room at Lab’s Reservoir campus. After studying at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, she moved to Virginia Beach and studied at the Contemporary Art Center.

Lab School taught Danielle to never give up and more importantly, follow her dreams. She did just that, started painting full time, and successfully supports herself as an artist. Oved Sopher is the Director of the Dove Gallery in Monaco, a private entity that promotes and exhibits emerging and upcoming international artists.

2003 Rafael Angevine is a Master of Tae Kwan Do and works as a veterinarian tech at Little Rascals Kennel in Germantown, MD. Bill Atkinson graduated in May from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering; in June he started work for Boeing in St. Louis, MI. Brad Leifer received a Masters in Library Science from Catholic University and is now an Information professional. He hopes to work as a Research Assistant for George Washington University’s Department of Public Health Policy.

Charles White is a United States Secret Service Uniformed Division Officer detailed to the White House. Alex Yergin is a Legislative Clerk with the Energy and Commerce Committee of the United States House of Representatives.

2004 Rivka Mehlman graduated from Yeshiva University in 2009 with a BA in education and an AA in Judaic Studies. She married Eitan Friedman on November 14, 2010. She recently received a Masters in Special Education from Towson State University and moved to Miami Beach. Max Sutton graduated from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Maren Rosenberg is an actor, playwright and theater artist with INAD Theater in Israel. She recently wrote, produced and performed in Still Small Voices, which aims to increase cultural tolerance and understanding among Palestinian and American audiences by honoring and sharing human stories.

2005 Heather Puzon works at the DEA-Drug Enforcement Agency in Virginia and part time at Godiva Chocolatier at the National Harbor in Maryland. Maurice Vigier de Latour graduated from Lynn University with a Masters in Business and is currently working for Frontstream Payments, a company that specializes in credit card processing and provides merchant services and payment solutions to businesses.

2006 Tim Danos is a teacher, Arts Director and soccer coach at the Nativity Preparatory School in Wilmington, DE through the Americorps program. Nativity is a middle school for low income boys. Last year he taught social studies at Kent County High School in Chestertown, MD. Max Dickens is attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Andrew Jost is an Associate Financial Advisor at the privately-held financial security firm, Northwestern Mutual in Washington, DC. Daniel Kelly graduated from Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD and is now a Development Intern at the National Parks Conservation Association. He majored in communications and minored in history. Elizabeth Kent is a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor.

2007 Emmett Bell is a junior at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Kirsten Brown graduated cum laude from Trinity University. Trinity also awarded her the Trinity T pin, one of the school’s highest honors. She is deferring grad school for a year and is considering several job options. Morgan Brown has her Child Care 1 certificate and her CPR certificate. She teaches in the 3-year-old classroom at Crossroads CDC at the United Methodist Church in Washington, DC. Tillman Ellis graduated from Davis & Elkins College. He is pursuing a program in outdoor education.

MacKenzie Martinez received her BA in Communication from UVA-Wise program. She is moving to California to pursue a career in event planning and acting. Hannah Richards graduated with a BA in theatre studies and minors in music and film from Guilford College. She and her fiancee live in Colorado, where Hannah is taking acting lessons and job hunting. Manuela Saenz received a BFA in Illustration and Cartooning from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Will Sutton graduated from Wesley College with a BS in Business Administration as well as an International Business Degree. Naomi Whitted finished her AA at the Corcoran College of Art and Design; she is also a Certified Makeup Artist and is building her portfolio in makeup artistry.

2008 Brad Himelfarb graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology. Jess Orloff spent last spring studying abroad in Australia at the University of the Sunshine Coast and has returned to Adelphi for her senior year.

2009 Katie Lane is planning a move to the Orlando area to attend community college with the hope of transferring to Rollins College.

Kate Welsh just completed a Semester at Sea through the College of Charleston.

Paul Gilbert: from Lab Student to Book Author Congratulations to Lab alum, Paul Gilbert ’83 on the publication of his first book, Lead Like a General: Modern research on Leadership as seen through the Civil War. Paul attended Lab School’s Junior High from 1976 – 1979 before Lab had a high school. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Andrews College and a master’s in interdisciplinary studies, with a focus on conflict resolution and public policy, from George Mason University. Paul has studied organizational change, leadership, communication, and innovation through the Aresty Institute of Executive Education at the Wharton School of Business. Currently the Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, Gilbert oversees the management of a diverse system of public lands and facilities. He is an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University, and on the Board of Regents for the School of Revenue Development and Management at Oglebay. Over the years, Paul has written articles on leadership, history and environmental issues for magazines and newspapers. He also writes a blog on issues related to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.

“My advice to students at Lab today would be to understand and build on your strengths.

While there are areas that you have struggled in, there are others that you excel at. Follow your interests, build on your best, and work hard at it. With that formula success is sure to follow,” counsels Paul Gilbert.

“Life After Lab:” A Window on College Always highly anticipated by our High School students, the annual LSAA-sponsored “Life After Lab” panel was held in January. Gwenn Lavine ’10, Lee Olson ’10, Stanley Randolph ’10, Miles Ray ’10, and Nora Stork ’09 answered questions about college life for our current students.

LSAA Career Day Proves: The Possibilities Are Endless for Lab Grads Fourteen multi-talented Lab School alumni returned to campus to discuss their professions during the LSAA’s Alumni Career Day on March 14.

The alumni were welcomed in the new Dorothy Proctor Adams Library. High School students had pre-selected four alumni whose professions interested them; they rotated through the selected speaker rooms for 20-minute presentations. Each presenter spoke about his or her career, highlighting the education, skills and abilities needed for their profession; each session concluded with questions from Lab students. Career Day ended with a reception for speakers, students, faculty, and staff, held in the brand new Commons.

t h e di f f e r e n c e i s Extraordinary for over 45 years, The Lab School has been providing an exceptional academic experience for bright, motivated students (grades 1-12) with learning disabilities. The first school of its type in the nation, The Lab School enjoys a worldwide reputation for transforming lives and guiding students on the path toward success.

For students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences, art can be the gateway to learning. Our innovative arts-infused curriculum is experiential and multi-sensory, helping young people overcome difficulties with reading, spelling, writing and math, while preparing them for a rewarding range of college and career choices.

Our 2010-2011 Annual Report recaps a benchmark year for The Lab Schools. We thank the countless donors and volunteers whose generosity has enabled our faculty, staff, and students to embody our core values and fulfill our mission.
