The next big thing. The Audi A1. An Audi A1 was the first car to be purchased at our new Audi Centre Gold Coast dealership. Louis & Sylvana (photographed) said they were after something small and funky therefore the Audi A1 was the perfect fit. The Audi A1, which was just recently released, is characterised by its Sportiness, precision and youthful freshness. The designers at Audi looked to aeroplane wings for inspiration for the elegantly curving instrument panel in the interior and the four round, far-protruding air nozzles are reminiscent of the turbines of a jet. Audi designs the best interiors in the business and there’s an immediate sense of quality and craftsmanship when you open the door of an A1. The Audi A1 starts from just $34,990 drive away. The Audi A1 and the full Audi range are available to test drive now at our new showroom, Audi Centre Gold Coast, 62 High Street, Southport.

Neighbours star, pop princess, gay icon, breast cancer survivor – Kylie is back – fronting her global Aphrodite tour and happy to be doing what she loves.

Real fame is being known by one word. In thirty years our Kylie has transformed herself from Charlene to chanteuse, from a slightly daggy poppet with a killer perm to a beloved style icon. Throughout this incredible journey she has managed to retain a sense of self and humbleness, understanding that when she started out as a child actress 30 years ago she could never have imagined herself fronting her massive shows on global tours in front of her adoring fans. So how did it go so right for the little Aussie songbird derided by U.K. critics as the singing budgie but who has laughed all the way to the bank with singles such as I Should Be So Lucky topping the British charts in the late eighties? Leaving Australia to try her luck in London she teamed up with uber-hit makers Stock, Aitken and Waterman and together they produced 13 top ten hits in British charts. “If you’re part of a record company, you’re a manufactured product. It doesn’t mean that you’re not talented,” was her explanation of that success. From there her constant need to re-invent herself, including a period where she admitted to mimicking the Queen of Pop, Madonna, describing herself as the Princess of Pop, enabled a newer, edgier version of Kylie to appear in front of a public on a regular basis. Part of that image was an array of boyfriends starting with her Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan, rock star Lenny Kravitz and the late INXS front man Michael Hutchence. For the past three years she has been on the arm of hotter than hot Spanish model Andres Velencoso Segura with their relationship progressing to the point where they have publicly discussed marriage. Hit singles continued to churn out with Can’t Get You Out of My Head topping the charts in 40 countries and the album ‘Fever’ became a club staple. Then in 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, dark days and darker thoughts but she was upfront about her travails and was lauded by health professionals everywhere for what was dubbed the ‘Kylie Effect’ – her story encouraged women everywhere to go for a breast examination. “Being ‘breast aware’ plays a major role in early detection, so I was especially pleased to hear younger women in particular are being more proactive with breast examination and talking to their doctors,” she said. “Having had cancer, one important thing to know is you’re still the same person at the end. You’re stripped down to near zero. But most people come out the other end feeling more like themselves than ever before.” Kylie has publicly worried that the treatment she received in her battle with breast cancer may have affected her fertility. In remission she has continued her music and tours with her latest extravaganza, Aphrodite – Les Folies, kicking off a world tour in Denmark in February, the Australian tour begins in Brisbane on June 3rd before continuing around the country. Aerialists, an army of dancers and an up close and personal section dubbed the Splash Zone are just some of the highlights of the $25 million spectacular. The West Australian Noongar people use the word Kiley or Kylie to describe a boomerang. In many ways our Kylie is similar – she keeps coming back – the difference is that a boomerang doesn’t return each time with different markings. MY WORD

The A-Z of Azra Kujovic – DFS Galleria “My life began in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1980. What was a happy carefree childhood with my parents and older sister Sanela was destroyed when war broke out in 1992 and we were forced to leave our home. It was an emotionally upsetting time for us as children as we watched tearfully as many of our friends and relatives were unable to catch any transport out of the city. Father stayed behind and I had to grow up fast. Our sure and safe life became uncertain as we lived in the Middle East until the three of us were accepted into Australia, arriving in Sydney in 1994. We had just arrived in Sydney when word came through that my dear father had been killed in a massacre in the Sarajevo market place. He was one of nearly 70 victims. This was a very difficult time for my family. My sister Sanela said that it took us years to feel safe and happy again. Mother and Sanela are my true heroes because they taught me about the importance of pride, faith and refraining from slipping into having a ‘victim’ mentality. They stressed the necessity of having the courage and strength to continue on and remaining positive in the midst of adversity. Our small family moved to the Gold Coast where I completed my schooling at Merrimac State High School. I was also elected President of Community Youth Club. Then it was off to Griffith University, graduating with a Business Degree, majoring in business and marketing in 2001. Since then I have worked in the retail industry and developed a genuine enthusiasm for people and service. I was appointed to be the beauty and luxury sales manager at DFS before becoming the general manager of the Surfers Paradise store at the age of 27. At that time I was one of the youngest general managers in the world wide network of this company. As a leader of a team it is important to create a positive environment where the team can grow and progress. The aim is to lead through common purpose, trust, empowerment with integrity and of course to celebrate the successes, big or small, whenever they occur. Attitude is also most important. Albert Einstein once said, ‘Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.’ With that in mind I try and focus my energy on being intentional, creating value and taking time to reflect and preventing problems – spending more time on productivity and progression in all aspects rather than just fixing the problems that arise. Apart from my work I am a wife and mother, something that I really enjoy, and my son Armani, who is now 5, enlightens me every day. I met my husband Almir while on holiday in Sarajevo and we are celebrating our 10th year wedding anniversary this year. Armani is a true gift from God and believe it or not he has become my teacher. Having a career and being a nurturer and home maker requires lots of planning and is a true balancing act but well worth the effort. I am a firm believer that for women it is important to stay in touch with our feminine side for true beauty cannot be complete if it is only on the surface. It enriches me as a person and as a woman. A dear teacher once said to me FEAR stands for ‘False Evidence Appearing Real’. I remember that whenever fear tries to overtake me as a reminder to focus on love and kindness.”

BY George Label Magazine gets up close and personal with George Gross

How old were you when you first knew you wanted to be a designer? “I started sketching

when I was six years old. My father, who was a tailor in Hungary, took me to see Rita Hayworth in Gilda. Before that my uncle had decided to teach me how to swim by throwing me in the pool and I can still recall almost drowning before my father pulled me out. When I was watching the movie I whispered to my father that I would go back in the water if I could make a dress for Rita.”

to hide the most obvious? “I know but I’m

not going to tell you because that’s my secret (laughs). The best advice I can give is to buy something that is cut well. Maybe it goes back to my father’s tailoring but it is the fundamental of our clothes. Our business has increased over the past few years during a tough time for designers and retail and it’s because we concentrate on putting out beautiful, wearable clothes that flatter women. We also ensure that our sales’ staff understand what to sell to our clients. I can’t stand a sales girl who tells a client they look wonderful when in fact they look hideous.” What do you love most about your latest

Speaking of Harry – you both live and work

collection? “The mixing of textures and

together. How do you manage it? “You know

fabrics. There’s everything from lace to beaded bodices, floral detailing and taffeta. We design not to be trendy so much as to evolve with our clients. Evolution not revolution is the catchphrase because it is a continuing story from season to season.”

Women have become taller and bigger over the time you’ve been in business. Have you needed to make changes? “Yes that is true but the difference isn’t that noticeable. It has only been one dress size up in that time but women these days take much better care of themselves than in the ‘80s. Back label magazine WINTER 2011

Everyone has flaws – what are the best ways

Who are your style icons? “Audrey Hepburn of course because everyone loves Audrey. I also admire Cate Blanchett. She has an elegance and timeless quality that I love. So tall and with impeccable skin and great posture. For the male side of style, I can’t go past my partner, Harry Watt. His attention to detail and grooming is par excellence.”

I don’t even think about it. In the thirty years that we’ve been together there has never been one argument or disagreement. Our being together just feels absolutely right and it’s been that way since the moment we met. He’s intelligent, stylish and very funny.”

12

then at the age of 40 they were settling into middle age, dressing in a cardigan and blouse and not worrying about themselves. Now they are toned and terrific.”

What don’t we know about you? “I’m a very

good blackjack player. I made a lot of money playing at casinos. Then I reasoned that I was way ahead and concentrated on other things. So I studied dentistry at university for three years before leaving to work in fashion.” He gives a warm hug and it’s goodbye and off to catch his plane.

RAFW WRAp-UP It’s official –this Spring/Summer it’s all about vivid colour at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week

All things bright and beautiful – that’s the overriding trend to emerge from RAFW in Sydney this year. Gone the subdued hues and matt finish of last season brought on by the reaction to the GFC. This spring/summer let yourself go with an array of striking citrus, blues and reds that are both eye catching and fun loving. Alex Perry, Manning Cartell, Easton Pearson and Lisa Ho all featured pieces that were bright and, most importantly, wearable. Of course no RAFW is complete without a celebrity model. This year former super-model Yasmin Le Bon strutted her stuff for gal pal Gail Elliott of Little Joe design. Other trends to emerge to go with your newly vibrant wardrobe include high-waisted garments, maxi skirts, delicate lace as shown by Zimmerman, sharply tailored suits, flirty, feminine prints and those very special one off vintage pieces. The key is to have lots of fun with your style for the coming season and enjoy this bright burst of colour. 14

Eyes ahead

Inspired by vintage eyewear from the 50s through the 80s, Dita Bespoke Eyewear has used their natural affinity for design to introduce stylish eyewear. Utilising modern materials and shapes, Dita has become an alternative to label branded eyewear. A key component of the Dita philosophy is having logo details that are intentionally subtle so that the frame defines the look rather than the logo. This allows the design to complement the wearer and contribute to the overall style.

Looking the part

Dita Svelt in brown swirl $495 www.dita.com

The first rule of becoming a preppy is to act like one. Well mannered, happy, social, friendly and outgoing are the traits you need to cultivate. Being drunk or slobbering over everyone at a party is not how a preppy behaves. Secondly the clothes should be clean cut, classy and classical. Polo shirts, Oxford and Rugby shirts, cable-knit vests and sweaters, chino pants, a jacket or blazer (navy blue is a staple) are the norm for both male and female. The preppy girl is seen wearing tea dresses in linen or seersucker and accessorises with pearl necklace and earrings, small handbag and of course silk scarf and headband. The third requirement is the clothes should be clean and well maintained. Preps tend to keep their clothes for a long time and as they are usually cotton, wool or cashmere (never polyester) they need to be looked after.

Engineered in 2006 by Dr David Cook and Darren James at a U.K. University, FitFlop footwear features patent-pending, muscle-loading Microwobbleboard technology. They are designed to increase the time that your muscles are engaged and reduce the pressure loading on your foot by an average of 25% – so there’s no excuse not to fit into your chinos. Where to start? Take the gold or silver test by holding a piece of gold cloth or paper near your face and look in the mirror. Now do the same with something silver and this will help you see if you have warm or cool colouration. Warm has yellow undertones while cool produces blue. The next step is to determine if you are clear or muted. Clear usually is associated with more contrast in your colouring and muted is less noticeable contrast. Having worked out your definition now you allocate a ‘season’ to yourself. If your coloring is warm and clear you are a ‘spring’, if you are cool and clear you are ‘winter’, warm and muted is ‘autumn’ and cool and muted is “summer.” Nothing is ever hard and fast but a simple guide is work from the following guide lines. As a spring, you will suit warm, clear colors, such as salmon or lime. Winters can wear cool, clear colors such as black, white and navy blue. Autumns can best wear warm, muted colors like olive green or terracotta and summers look best in cool, muted colors such as burgundy or pastels. Don’t panic if it seems like a formula devised by Einstein. Most people have an instinct for the colour that suits them but you may be surprised at the results you achieve if you branch out from the colours and shades you normally wear.

Jump in for joy

What is it about Scandinavians and their ability to produce items of popular culture that become a global phenomenon? ABBA from Sweden, Angry Birds via Finland and now the One-Piece-Jump-In leisure suit, the creation of three young Norwegian men, is sweeping the world. Recovering from a late night out, the trio fantasised about designing the ultimate chill out wear. After some brainstorming they came up with a combination of a hoody and sweat pants and so the One Piece was born. “At first we just made them for friends but they told their friends and soon it got bigger and bigger. The word spread via social media and when one of Norway’s top bloggers wrote about the suits it took off,” explained Thomas Adams, CEO of One Piece. “Norway is only a country of 4 million people but we knew we had something when 2% of the population had purchased one of our garments. It has now grown worldwide. I’m based in Los Angeles and another of the trio is in London due to the response. Adding to the buzz is when celebrities such as Justin Beiber, Kate Moss, Paris Hilton, David Beckham and Jude Law have been photographed out and about in our suits.” Versatility and comfort are the main reasons for the success of these unusual garments and Thomas is well aware of the usual first reaction to the One Piece. “They’re the garments that no one wants to wear until they put one on and then they love it because they are so comfortable. People don’t need to take themselves too seriously and they can go straight from the couch to the night club.” Sadly for Thomas and his two friends those lazy Sunday mornings are a thing of the past as they work tirelessly to promote the brand around the globe. “I expect the suits to go very well in Australia because you have a strong surf culture. They’re perfect for after-surf wear and I’m sure Australians will love them.” Visit onepiece.com for stockists. THE hoodie is back and made to share

This season the Bonds Made2Share Hoodie has evolved and includes a voluminous hood that collapses and drapes around the neck when not worn up, and plenty of room in the body with discreet side pockets. With a choice of solid colours such as black, grey and moss green, plus a whole range of striped options including black and watermelon, white with coral, there’s one for everyone. In stores now.

Most people engage professional lawyers to ensure their purchase is secure but a growing band of home buyers are opting for do-it-yourself legals. ADIPOSITY Adiposity? Sounds intriguing, but it really just means how much extra fat you might be carrying around, and it sounds much better than obesity.

Fat deposits are normal in everyone. The only problem is how much we deposit. This is the evolutionary safety bank where we lay down reserves to guard us against famine. The issue in Australia is that we never have a famine and so we don’t use up all those deposits. No doubt attention to diet and exercise is important and we cannot ignore this, however when we need a little more assistance what is out there for us? Most people have heard of liposuction where the fatty tissue is removed by suction through small tubes called canulae. This is a very effective method of removing fat and is a very safe procedure. Liposuction is performed well under a twilight type of anaesthetic as a day surgery procedure and there is no need for a hospital stay. When a patient is looking to reshape a part of the body or reduce fatty bulges quickly then liposuction is a great way to achieve this. Sometimes however patients don’t like the thought of anaesthetics or any form of surgery and might turn to a non invasive method called Zeltiq Coolsculpting. With this process a vacuum activated apparatus injures and destroys the fat cells via controlled cooling. These cells are then eliminated by the body’s natural metabolism over a period of three to four weeks thus resulting in a smoothing of the fat bulges. The ideal areas for Coolscultping are the ‘muffin top’ or ‘love handles’ areas or just the little tummy bulge. As there are no needles and no surgery involved, each treatment cycle takes about an hour so it is good to bring along a good book or your iPad to pass the time. Yet another method to trim the fat and tighten the skin is Body Tite. This is most commonly used in conjunction with Liposuction when the problem is not so much fat but loose skin and where the Body Tite can be used on its own. Body Tite procedure is a lot like Liposuction in that we need to use some local anaesthetic and there will be a little bruising and some discomfort in the post op period. Body Tite is a Day Surgery procedure and you are up and walking out approximately an hour after it is completed. So there are quite a number of avenues open to manage Adiposity – Liposuction for larger volumes; Body Tite to tighten the loose skin; Zeltiq Coolsculpting to freeze away the smaller bulges and muffin tops. Which one will suit you?

Dr John Flynn’s Cosmedic and Skin Clinic at 98 Marine Parade, Southport offers a number of ethical and effective surgical and non-surgical procedures. For information visit cosmedic.com.au

Time line of a medical procedure Much has been made in the media of late about cosmetic surgery holidays in foreign countries. While the initial cost may be cheaper there is an inherent risk with these fly in/ fly out procedures, principally in the post operative care. What happens if there is a complication? Do you fly back to Thailand? Many times in the post op phase there are minor things which if seen early can be treated without an issue. Sometimes it is not really a problem at all and the patient just needs some reassurance. What happens if your surgeon is a thousand miles away? The key point – how did you get to see that doctor in the first place? Did you have a consultation at all or any assessment with a doctor? There are many benefits of seeing a doctor locally and you should take advantage of this. A consultation is the first step for patients when they can talk freely about their particular needs and ask questions. Prior to proceeding with surgery, some people still have questions after the initial contact and are encouraged to have a second consultation. When a patient is ready and then wants to proceed and book surgery, generally they can get an appointment within a month of the consultation. On the day of the surgery they will be met by our friendly staff and the familiar faces and comfortable surroundings help put people at ease. Naturally there are some formalities to be followed – right patient, right procedure – all of which is done to ensure that the peace of mind and well being of our patients is our primary concern. The first post-operative appointment is usually the day following surgery when everything is assessed and checked to ensure that all is as it should be. If required, an appointment is scheduled for day six for suture removal. Depending on the procedure they will return for further post-operative consultation as often as necessary over the next few weeks. As much as possible we like to keep in touch with our patients for long term follow up. As an added level of security, every patient is given Dr Flynn’s mobile number on the day of surgery and they are freely able to ring him should they have any fears or concerns. This is very different from what you are likely to encounter overseas.

The pleasures of the flesh are embodied by a bed of powdered iris and sexy-humoured vanilla, evoking a boudoir that conceals secret loves. It comes with string of pearls – a necklace in the 100ml bottle version and a bracelet on the 50ml version.

Guilty pleasure Gucci Guilty for men takes hold of the senses with a heady cocktail of invigorating Italian lemon and mandarin with crushed green leaves – evocative of sap rising – and a defiant punch of pink pepper. The hallmark of all Gucci fragrances is married with cedar and sandal wood gleaming with amber to create a robustly earthy, yet suggestively exotic sensuality of a profound masculinity. The effect is both remarkable and alluring.

Seductive spirit Bvlgari Mon Jasmin Noir is dedicated to a young and seductive woman revealing her character through a vivacious spirit, without compromising her refined, irresistibly artful beauty. Mon Jasmin Noir – this name embodies all the magic of the intimate bond between the woman and her fragrance. This is an eau de parfum which is exquisitely modern and sensual.

Fresh as a daisy Daisy Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs is the spirited new version of the original Daisy. Vibrant, charming and whimsical, it transports you to a place that is happy and sunny. Lose yourself in a field of flowers. It is a bright, floral, fruity fragrance that radiates with a sparkling energy. Sophisticated but not too serious, Daisy Eau So Fresh captures the essence of the Marc Jacobs woman and his feminine edgy designs.

Heaven for him and her With the creation of For Him, Narciso Rodriguez celebrates the dual nature of today’s masculinity. The man who wears For Him is complex and dynamic. There’s no distinction between who he is and how he appears. The For Him man is self-aware, naturally assertive and charismatic, leaving no one indifferent. Composed of a heart of musk amplified by three facets - violet, wood and amber. For Him is raw and natural, yet strong and sexy. The woman who wears For Her embodies a new femininity that is powerful and singular, a femininity that celebrates a woman whose inherent sensuality and natural grace resonates from within. Composed of a rare musk and a blend of floral, amber and woody pulsations, it is an emotional fragrance based on intuition that captures the essence of real women and embodies true elegance. 42

colourful concoctions These bright and beautiful scents will have you smelling sweetly

Night beauty Ricci Ricci Dancing Ribbon is for the self-confident, playful and dreamy. The fragrance takes its inspiration from the original Ricci Ricci, with the addition of raspberry and ginger to its top notes. At its heart is the sumptuous Beauty of the Night, a flower whose perfume is released, as its name suggests, after dark. True to all Nina Ricci fragrances, this is accompanied by the favoured notes of tuberose, Centifolia rose patchouli and sandalwood.

Cocktails and dreams Inspired by the first sip of a sexy, indulgent cocktail, Marc Jacobs introduces three limited edition splashes in Cranberry, Ginger and Curacao. Vibrant in colour and crisp to the senses, each scent indulges in the simple pleasures in life – the sounds of waves, a plush towel on white sand, a blue Curacao cocktail in hand. The Splash Cocktail Collection is packaged in luxurious, oversized glass bottles, their sleek silhouettes expressing the casual understated elegance of the Marc Jacobs aesthetic.

Feel the heat Global superstar Beyoncé introduces Beyoncé Heat Rush, the resplendent new scent that captures her shining personality and passion for life. The heart of the fragrance embodies Beyoncé’s ultra-feminine side with a delicate floral bouquet built upon a carefully blended combination of Yellow Tiger Orchid, Mango Blossom and Orange Hibiscus. Inspired by the sunsets in Brazil, it sparkles and excites the moment it touches the skin making the woman who wears it feel instantly effervescent and alive.

Here comes the sun A new olfactory signature by Daphné Bugey that sublimates the original fragrance with a breath of Neroli on a bed of white petals. The sunny floral bouquet, composed of Neroli and Tiare blossoms in the top notes, evolves towards a luminous floral core of Jasmine and Hyacinth; ingredients also present in the original eau de toilette fragrance. The musky base leaves a wellrounded impression. A fresh, floral and solar fragrance... ideal for those sunny Winter days.

winter chill Local knowledge knows best

It’s been five years since chef/owner Daran Glasgow joined with partner and now wife, Leesa Huth, to operate Chill On Tedder. Since then the cute corner eatery at the northern end of the restaurant strip in Tedder Avenue, Main Beach has won a chef ’s apron full of awards. Included among the many are consecutive Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence in 2009 and 2010. Daran and his team are hoping for a threepeat this year. Besides the acknowledgement of industry peers, a small army of fans, both local and tourist, has deservedly made Chill On Tedder one of the Gold Coast’s most popular eateries. As with any chef worth his Celtic Sea Salt, Daran is a firm believer in buying the freshest and the best wherever and whenever available. While his menu changes with the seasons, regulars know that on any given day Daran will have concocted a mouth watering dish sourced from a local provider. “I’ve recently released our new winter menu but there are two items that will never come off, no matter what the time of the year. They’re my signature dishes – scallops with angel hair pasta and crispy skinned confit duck leg. If I removed them my customers would storm the kitchen,” he laughed. Besides their extensive menu Chill has a comprehensive selection of national and international wines. A consistent winner of ‘best wine list restaurant under 50 seats’ and a coveted wine service award in 2008, Chill On Tedder prides itself on presenting outstanding wines at a price to suit any budget. With indoor and outdoor seating for 55 patrons, Chill On Tedder has deservedly won and maintained its place atop the culinary tree. Lunch is available from Tuesday to Saturday and dinner from Monday to Saturday. If you appreciate fine food and great service, this is the restaurant you need to visit. Chill On Tedder is located at Shop10/26 Tedder Avenue, Main Beach. Visit chillontedder.com.au or phone 07 5528 0388.

Ferry Road Wine & Beer Nestled in among the hustle and bustle of The Brickworks in Ferry Road is a boutique bottle shop like no other. Ferry Road Wine and Beer as the name suggests sells all manner of alcoholic beverages. From the finest hand crafted wines to the most exclusive of spirits or high quality imported beers, this bottle shop has it all. Naturally they do sell wines, beers and spirits for every occasion but the expertise of owners Tony Burnett and Toni Ferguson coupled with the genial affability of manager Jeff Blackford is what sets them apart from the everyday bottle shop. A trip to your average bottle shop has more to do with wading through the latest quaffable offerings than finding something that is the right fit for your particular needs. Indeed what sets Ferry Road Wine and Beer apart from the others is their ability to retail those hard to come by brands or vintages. “Often we get a release that nobody else has simply because the distributors realise that we are passionate about their product and will showcase it properly to our valued customers,” said Toni. “We also have regular tastings of new or special releases and we welcome anyone if they are passing to come in for a taste.” A visit to their website, ferryrdwineandbeer.com.au is also testament to their ability to stock the rarest and the best. There’s everything from a bottle of Dom Perignon Rosé to the exceptional Bowmore Rare 1970, a whisky which was distilled in 1970, left to mature for 40 years before bottling in 2010. No matter your budget, Ferry Road Wine and Beer has a phenomenal range that will quite simply blow your mind. Treat your taste buds to the ultimate experience and drop in for a visit.

Agave Margarita 45ml Herradura Silver Tequila 30ml freshly squeezed lime juice 15ml Herradura Agave Nectar

Craggy Range Giants Winery in the breathtaking surrounds of Hawkes Bay.

Blue heaven

Method: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail glass, fill with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled, salt rimmed (pink sea salt) martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge and serve.

For more than a 140 years, Herradura has continued to be the leading, 100% Blue Agave, ultra premium Tequila, and is renowned for its superior quality and authenticity. The key to this simple yet delicious margarita is the agave nectar. It is a 100% natural, low G.I. sweetener made from the blue agave plant, the very same plant used to make tequila. A positive alternative to sugar!

Craggy Range Wine – Land of Giants The wine-making traditions of Europe are based upon family traditions. In 1997 Terry Peabody set out to establish a dynasty with the founding of Craggy Range Wine in New Zealand. With Director of Wine and Viticulture Steve Smith as a partner and with the involvement of both their families, they have quickly established a legacy in fine wine-making that will continue for generations. The wines of Craggy Range reflect not only the character of the vineyard and the maker, but also the unique weather and cultural aspects of every vintage. Some vintages are exceptional but when the season dictates that the standard has not been met then those parcels of wine are declassified as assemblage and take no further part in the finished wine. The one word used on all occasions is quality. Each and every vintage must stand on its own which is why Craggy Range single vineyard wines will not be made in all vintages. There are two 52

label magazine WINTER 2011

distinct collections. The first is the Vineyard Designated Collection, intense and complex bearing the Craggy stamp of elegance, balance and texture. The second is the Prestige Collection produced only in exceptional vintages when the soil, climate and culture at Craggy Range come together in unity. These are released in a very limited collection of single vineyard wines each with a name that reflects its heritage. Craggy Range Giants Winery in the beautiful Hawkes Bay area has gained worldwide acclaim both for the wine tasting experience it provides and the award winning Terrôir Restaurant. The brand is the culmination of different vineyards based in Hawkes Bay, Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Each produces grapes which are used to make single vineyard wines, in keeping with Terry Peabody’s original dream of producing the best wines in the land. The tradition continues.

Code rED Steve and Autumn Adams stated goal was to establish the best steak restaurant imaginable. With branches in Broadbeach, Brisbane and Fiji they’ve achieved that and more.

To borrow from an old advertising slogan, beef ain’t beef. Nowhere is that more pertinent than at Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill in Broadbeach. A detailed reading of the extensive range of meat listed on the menu reveals how seriously owners Steve and Autumn Adams take their mantra of providing the best beef in the land. A good wine list requires a sommelier to help demystify some of the offerings and executive chef Damien Draper from the Brisbane Moo Moo has done the same for the meat eaters and supplied tasting notes for three of the more popular cuts and included a recommended wine. “The first is David Blackmore’s 100% full blood Wagyu from Victoria which is 700 days old and grain fed. This is a beautiful steak, full of Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is genetically inclined to produce high marbling, a quality which brings a full flavoured, rich and buttery taste. This is a true melt in your mouth experience and blends wonderfully with Penfold’s 128 Shiraz 2009. The second is the Cape Grim Grass Fed. No more than thirty-six months of age, this has a metallic flavour full of natural minerals with grassy tones. A dark flesh with a juicy tenderness, this goes perfectly with Nanny Goat Pinot Noir 2008. Lastly we have our own Moo Moo In House, five weeks dry aged beef. This is for the true connoisseur producing a robust flavour which has a distinct musty odour and a gamey finish. If you’ve never had this before it can be daunting because you may not be sure what it is you are eating because of the intense almost sour flavour. I’ve chosen the 2007 Langmeil Cabernet for its equally intense characters and nuances of chocolate and liquorice.” Naturally Moo Moo is not only about red meat with a fine array of seafood, duck, chicken, kangaroo and pasta dishes to tempt any palate. The emphasis at all Moo Moo restaurants is quality of produce coupled with equally high service. It was Steve and Autumn’s dream when they started six years ago and with Fiji added to now make a stable of three, their vision has been realised.

Fellini

Lights, kitchen, action! Ristorante Fellini’s partner and chef Anna Cacace’s career in the kitchen has spanned 34 years. The virtuoso creator of Fellini’s award winning authentic Italian sauces and the motherly figure of the Fellini kitchen has now spent over three decades dishing up fine food with love and said when it comes to work, there’s nothing else she’d rather be doing. Having started out in her parent’s original Sydney restaurant Pulcinella, Anna said she learnt the art and passion of traditional Italian cooking from mother Olympia and father Mario Percuoco. “I want to give credit to my mum and my dad,” said Anna. “When I was five or six, mum used to pull up a stool for me to roll gnocchi. I was involved in the kitchen from a very early age.” Although introduced to the kitchen as a tiny tot, the decision to make cooking her career didn’t come to Anna until she was 26. Succumbing to her destiny to be a part of her family’s culinary legacy, Anna completed her chef apprenticeship under her father’s guidance. She attributes most of what she’s learnt from her father, who taught her the secrets of creating fine Italian food from the small back kitchen of Pulchinella in an era when European food was slowly being embraced in the city. “My father was famous for his antipasto back then – he was the first to introduce this to the restaurant scene in Sydney using vegetables, zucchini, mint and garlic.” On her parent’s teaching style, Anna said her parents were always very demanding in the kitchen, but that is something she is now thankful for. “That is probably why I myself like to run a tight ship,” she said. Anna relocated to the Gold Coast 16 years ago, 15 of which have been spent at Ristorante Fellini, the iconic Marina Mirage restaurant she now partners with her brother Carlo Percuoco, head Chef Richard Burt and master pasta maker Raffaelle Di Benedetto. Anna now focuses her magic on making all of the signature sauces for the restaurant and its adjacent fresh pasta and sauce shop, Pastifico Fellini. Regularly travelling to Italy to keep up to date with cooking methods and the most authentic products to bring home to the restaurant,

Anna has undertaken many cooking classes while abroad to learn new techniques from some of the best cooks in the world. At home in the Ristorante Fellini kitchen, Anna has cooked for many famous names including the King of Dubai, Sean Connery, Sarah Michelle Gellar and John Farnham to name only a few. An avid soccer fan, Anna said for her, the biggest highlight of her career so far was cooking for Brazillian soccer player Pele. “I cherish the napkin he used – he signed it for me,” she said. Anna said everyone that comes through Fellini is treated like family and she believed that is what sets the restaurant apart. “I love this place because we have an open kitchen and contact with the customers. Our customers have become friends to me and inside the kitchen, we are family. Richard and Ralph have become our brothers. And of course, the love and the care that goes in to our food. We source the best products available from Italy, around Australia or locally.” If she hadn’t entered the kitchen, Anna said her second career choice would’ve been to become a psychologist. “I love to read people. I suppose that’s what I do in my current job too, I can read people and understand their needs when it comes to food and making people happy,” she said. “I’ve never regretted doing what I do. At the end of the day, I get rewarded. A happy tummy is a happy person. I enjoy seeing people happy and smiling because they have enjoyed our food. When you enjoy something, it’s not hard. And it’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.” Ristorante Fellini has been owned and operated for the past 15 years by the Percuoco family, including brother Carlo, sister Anna Cacace and partners Richard Burt and Raffaelle Di Benedetto. Together the partner’s modern take on traditional Italian cuisine handed down through the generations has won Ristorante Fellini more than 100 industry accolades since its inception. Rocksalt Food that will rock your world

Photography: Grant Good – Gold Coast Dining

Nestled into the Aria building in Albert Avenue, Broadbeach, RockSalt is an oasis of culinary delights for the discerning diner. In the three years since Chef Matt Jefferson and wife Amy opened the doors they have deservedly won awards and the praise of their many diners. “The response from our diners has been very gratifying,” said Matt. “About 70% of our business is now repeat customers. We’ve been awarded ‘Chef of the Year’ for the last three years in the Gold Coast Magazine People’s Choice Awards and have twice been a finalist in the Restaurant and Catering Association’s yearly industry awards for ‘Best Contemporary Australian Restaurant.” We’ve also received a Chef ’s Hat from The Australian Good Food Guide every year since opening with the highest score in Broadbeach and among the top 5 on the Gold Coast. With so much immediate critical and public success Matt is keen to continue with his philosophy of using the freshest and best seasonal produce, thereby presenting food that allows those spectacular ingredients to shine. “I’m preparing our new Autumn/Winter menu at the moment. During the cooler months I love creating dishes that use cuts of meat that provide the most flavour such as Lamb Neck, Ox-Tail and Beef or Pork Cheeks. I also love the technique of smoking different types of meat and seafood from Duck Breast to King Fish and even Vegetables. With one of our current entrees, we smoke the Duck Breast in house over apple wood and hickory which brings a fantastic infusion of flavour to the meat.” No matter how delicious the food, if the front of house isn’t operating at a level to match the plated product then all that good work has been for nothing. “Luca Giacomin is our maitre‘d and he’s a total professional. I’m always receiving compliments on the service we provide – it’s attentive but unobtrusive. The staff takes great pride in ensuring that the diner has the best experience possible. Luca has also been a great help with our wine list. His knowledge of Italian and European wines is astonishing and coupled with our great Australian wines; it gives diners an enviable selection.” Luca also received an award at this year’s Gold Coast Magazine People’s Choice night after being named ‘Maitre‘d of the Year’. For a young man who has achieved so much in such a relatively short period of time what does Matt have planned for the future? “Quite simply it is to keep improving. I want every menu to be better than the next. My food hero is Heston Blumenthal who prides himself on being on a constant quest for perfection. He’s innovative, experimental and someone who has changed the rules of cooking. That’s my aim too – to keep producing the best food that I can whilst constantly striving to be better.” If awards and customer satisfaction are any guide, Matt and the team at RockSalt are achieving that and then some. Audi CENTRE

Gold Coast

Q&A with Damien Holly & Simon French Damien Holly

Speaking of quattro, the new restaurant located on the mezzanine floor – how distracting is it having that great food just up the stairs?

Simon: It is a welcome distraction actually. Our restaurant provides us with a fantastic atmosphere to sit down and chat with our customers over a coffee or something from our great menu. It is also open to everyone, not just Audi owners, so please come in and visit us. What makes Audi such a special car? Damien: The research and

development that goes into the range means that an Audi has the highest level of active and passive safety, performance and agility making the driving experience exhilarating. How has the new showroom been received by your customers?

Simon: I believe our customers are almost as excited as we are. The warmth of the showroom and the ease for our customers to visit us and view our range has been very much welcomed.

Do you ever get sick of that new car smell? Damien: I wish they could bottle it! Simon: I love it; everyone should have it at home. What is your favourite car to drive among the Audi range and why?

Damien: At present I am driving the A5 Coupe and it is a sporty, exhilarating vehicle that puts a smile on my face every time I jump in it! Simon: It is hard to go past the R8 which is a true Super Car in every sense, however the new Audi A7 is the most balanced vehicle I have ever driven and the styling is breath taking. In the recent federal budget a $5000 bonus has been announced

ENTERTAINMENT

The greatest show

on earth

Saltimbanco, from the Italian “saltare in banco” which literally means to jump on a bench, is the show which started Australia’s love affair with Cirque du Soleil when the internationally-acclaimed entertainment company first toured here in 1999. Saltimbanco is returning and will open in Brisbane on July 8 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, following seasons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart. Saltimbanco recently concluded a hit season in Istanbul, Turkey and a tour of South Africa, Cirque du Soleil’s first visits to these two countries. Set inside an imaginary metropolis of colourful inhabitants, Saltimbanco features breathtaking acrobatics and unbelievable athleticism during solo spotlights and epic ensembles. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world where diversity is a cause for hope. Technical expertise and extravagant design are woven together with spectacular costumes, amazing lighting, humour, and enchanting live music. Overflowing with colour, amusement and amazement, Saltimbanco is a fun show for the whole family to enjoy. From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment around the globe. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists from close to 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators (almost 12 millions on Saltimbanco since 1992) in 300 cities on five continents. In 2011, Cirque du Soleil will present 22 shows simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com

BOOKS

oh! jackie Jackie Collins likes sex but hates being touched. Label meets this woman of contrasts.

As the author of 28 novels and responsible for more than 400 million (and counting) book sales over the past 40 years, Jackie Collins, did something quite surprising for this interview. She answered her own phone. No P.R. people, assistants or lackeys – a direct line for a one on one chat via a provided number and a designated time. “I’m here alone, sitting at my desk with some pizza, looking out the window at the swaying palm trees.” On the publicity trail for her latest book, Goddess of Vengeance, she is a one woman phenomenon. “The amazing thing is that all my books are still in print and I keep being discovered in new markets. Recently I travelled to Russia and had a great time. The response over there has been wonderful.” The book is another in the series featuring Lucky Santangelo. “Lucky is a very strong woman, as are a lot of my female characters, and they were written that way long before females were portrayed as dominant characters in popular literature. In fact, I get a lot of feedback from women who have broken up with their boyfriends or facing some crisis and instead of being in tears on the floor they write and tell me that they say to themselves, ‘What would Lucky do?’ I love that!” She is chatty and direct, having firm opinions on many subjects, occasionally emphasised with a colourful expletive. For example on the ‘Hollywood’ pursuits of massages, facials et al she says, “I don’t do all those girly things. I hate being touched or massaged - except

for sex of course. I can do a manicure in five minutes or my own facials and I also don’t understand women’s addiction to extreme plastic surgery. Fake boobs, fake lips and doing that puffed up cheeks thing. The one thing that women need is confidence and it’s a shame if they keep changing all the time. And I’m not a fan of the metro-sexual male either. There’s something odd about looking at a man who’s had his eyes done.” Straight to the point! She started writing as a teenager and discovered a more than willing market for her raunchy stories among her friends. Her first novel, The World is Full of Married Men, was famously described by Barbara Cartland as ‘nasty, filthy and disgusting’. The resultant publicity and the fact that the book was a rattling good read helped propel it to number one on the best seller lists. “I never did thank her for that quote, which was so good you couldn’t script it, but I was on a TV chat show in England with her and she said that I was responsible for all the perverts in England. Hardly! However I was way before my time in terms of not accepting the double standard that it was all right for the man to sleep around but shameful for women. I was all for sexual equality before it became the norm.” As a one woman power house that is hands on in every aspect of her life, including answering the phone personally, she has determinedly forged a path through many aspects of show business. Recently she was the producer of a film Paris Connections made exclusively for DVD which was financed by the British supermarket chain Tesco and designed to be sold in their stores. “I love being a producer and yes, it is tougher being a woman because we still aren’t respected in business. I’ll work morning, noon and night on the set to make sure it is right. Because I have seen the book in my mind’s eye a hundred times, I know how it should look so I’m always standing right behind the director. It takes a strong director to work with me – someone who won’t feel threatened because I don’t mind being thought of as a bitch to get what I am after.” “My characters write themselves. I don’t sit there and plot and plan. They take me and honestly, it is a trip for me. Everything is written in longhand and then I have a fabulous assistant who puts it on the computer and I go back and forth about ten times making changes. It’s the only way I can do it although I do a lot on the computer myself and I’m a huge fan of twitter. I also have a Facebook page and of course there’s a wonderful web site. Then the question that everyone asks – her affair with Marlon Brando when she was 16 years old and newly arrived in Hollywood. “That will be something I will talk about at length in my auto-biography. I can say that it gave me enormous confidence as a woman because he was the hottest man on the planet at that time. He was the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen, an incredible actor and absolutely fascinating. I would have loved to have seen Marlon, at his peak, working with Angelina Jolie, my favourite female actor. I think it would have been Bye Bye Brad!” Her many fans will be pleased to know that Jackie has no plans to stop writing – ever. “I love writing and it’s something I am passionate about. It’s an adventure. I wake up in the morning and look forward to starting work. I could quite easily be in bed because I am a TV addict, and a chocoholic, but I manage to get myself up and going but I have one day a week when I stay in bed and watch anything I want via the 14 TiVos installed in the house.” Warm, engaging and wonderfully certain about herself, Jackie Collins is a character in the real sense of the word. If she didn’t already exist she would have made a great heroine in one of her books. labelmagazine.com.au

Cancerians like Matthew Fox have a great urge to control their surroundings.

Sandra Bullock is the essence of a true Leo – outgoing, confident and friendly.

Gemini

horoscopes

May 21 to June 20

Sagittarius

November 22 to December 21

Stars: Nicole Kidman, Joan Rivers and Kayne West

Stars: Tyra Banks, Brad Pitt, and Katie Holmes

Money could be an issue so be careful with extravagance in your social activities and with friends. Someone special may emerge so listen and learn more about him/her, because you never know where this may lead.

Financial problems are lurking ahead so take care with overspending. Relationships need extra time and energy to thrive and you may gain good information and knowledge through social circles.

Cancer

June 21 to July 22

Stars: Matthew Fox, Lindsay Lohan, and Gisele Bundchen

Capricorn

December 22 to January 19

Stars: Sienna Miller, Denzil Washington, and Kristie Alley

Be careful not to stress yourself too much. Take some time out for a spa or a massage. In money matters, trust your sixth sense, while opportunities at work may develop into something meaningful.

Do not allow stress and tension to dominate your life as it can lead to conflict. Listen to your heart and take some time off to assess your life. Start a new activity or hobby and think before engaging in any major purchases.

Leo

Aquarius

July 23 to August 22

January 20 to February 18

Stars: Sandra Bullock, Stephanie Seymour, and Kevin Spacey

Stars: Christian Bale, Oprah, and Mischa Barton

Singles can look forward to sparking new relationships. Career-wise the months ahead are quite lucky, so hone your leadership skills and make your presence felt but take care not to be pushed into making decisions you may regret.

On the work front take care of your own interests as there may be problems with fellow workers. The balance to this will come from your family life with happiness and good times indicated.

Virgo

August 23 to September 22

Stars: Beyonce Knowles, Cameron Diaz, and Keanu Reeves

Pisces

February 19 to March 20

Stars: Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel, and Bruce Willis

You are entering a period of powerful attraction. Socially you are about to hit the heights and people will be drawn to you. Career-wise, be careful sharing information with others in the office.

Be prepared for your instincts and intuition to loom large in your life. This will produce a sense of personal power which will be a constant in your life in the coming year. People will be more attracted to you as your time to shine begins.

Libra

Aries

September 23 to October 22

March 21 to April 19

Stars: Hugh Jackman Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Ashlee Simpson

Stars: Victoria Beckham, Steven Tyler, and Emma Watson

Your life is developing as planned but you may feel as though things are unsettled. The next year will see those plans come to fruition with money aplenty but try to remember to limit the shopping and save.

Romance is highlighted and this is an ideal time to plan a getaway. Positive stars are surrounding your finances so make this a focus for the rest of the year. Social life and family outings will be a highlight.

Scorpio

Taurus

October 23 to November 21

April 20 to May 20

Stars: Rachel McAdam, Winona Ryder, and Ryan Reynolds

Stars: Uma Thurman, Bono, and Jessica Alba

This is a great time for Scorpions with new relationships and money matters operating under favourable skies. Socially everything is pointing towards you being the centre of attention so make the most of this time.

Your workplace may be the cause of some challenges but they will be resolved with time. Luck is returning to you but take care with close relationships as there may be difficulties ahead. A good time to plan your next holiday. labelmagazine.com.au
