T

here’s something about Kate! Despite amazing commercial success and starring opposite the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Jim Carrey and Harvey Keitel, Kate Winslet has managed to retain a refreshing sense of normality amidst all the hoopla and back slapping that is Hollywood today. That can be traced back partly to her being the slightly chubby child who was never picked first for anything, and that she comes from a family of jobbing actors who knew that while performing was something they loved, it was always temporary and other means would need to be found to keep the family fed and housed. “I was the kid who never won the races. I never jumped the highest. I wasn’t on the list of the high-achievers,” she was quoted last year. She is someone who appreciates that her success so far is pretty amazing yet who still retains a strong sense of humility of the everyday. She was born in October 1975 and studied drama from a young age. Hardly surprising given her father is an actor, her grandparents founded the Reading Repertory Theatre and both her sisters are working actors. Despite the difficulties associated with life as a performer she describes her family as close and “the sort of people who get together for Sunday lunch.” It was in New Zealand that she received her first big break when she was chosen at seventeen to appear in Peter Jackson’s ‘Heavenly Creatures’ based on the real life story of two young girls who take revenge after being separated by their parents. “I couldn’t believe I was in a film and it was such tremendous fun,” she explained and considering her previous job was slicing meat in a delicatessen it certainly was. Her talent did not go unnoticed and she quickly found more film work including as Ophelia in ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’ for which she received an Oscar nomination. “It was the changing point, really. It made me realise that people like what I do. It gave me confidence. I think any form of self-expression is half confidence, half sheer hard work and, maybe, a bit of talent thrown in.” Then, quite literally, her ship came in via ‘Titanic’. She lit up the screen and fogged up the interior of the car with Leonardo Di Caprio earning an Oscar nomination and international attention. The highest grossing film ever at that time, Titanic’s success also propelled Kate to a level of global fame and scrutiny that the then 22 year old could never have imagined. Her weight became a source of tabloid torment but she retained a sense of equilibrium about it and never altered her sense of worth or self. “When I was heavy, people would say to me (and it was such a backhanded compliment), ‘You’ve got such a beautiful face,’ in the way of, like, ‘Oh, isn’t it a shame that from the neck down you’re well, oversized.” Marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton led to the birth of a daughter Mia but they divorced after three years when she then met and married British director, Sam Mendes, from whom she has recently divorced, that union producing another child, Joe. It is her role as a mother that Kate, understandably, takes the greatest amount of pride. “I always want them to be regular kids who are grateful

8

and respectful of other human beings. I want them to know that when we fly first-class, that they are lucky. The highest compliment I could ever receive about my kids – and I can say that this does happen frequently – is when the in-flight crew say to me, ‘Your children are wonderful. They are so well-behaved.’ Every time I am told that, I could weep. I think of myself as a mum who finds the time to go to work. I have to check myself for baby sick before I walk out of the house in the morning. I am really a mum ... I know I am a great mother.” Her eclectic choices in roles continued, exploring characters and events that interested her. ‘Quills’, ‘Iris’, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, ‘Finding Neverland’, ‘Little Children’ and then her Academy Award winning role in ‘The Reader’. “Winning the Oscar was like winning all the prizes in one single night that I never won as a kid. For me, it was an internal-fist-pumping moment of ‘YES!’” That followed a re-union of sorts with her good friend Leonardo Di Caprio in ‘Revolutionary Road’ a no holds barred look at a young couple in the ‘50s as they struggle with life, each other and raising two children. In all Kate has been nominated six times for an Academy Award, the youngest person ever to achieve that feat, won awards from the Screen Actors Guild, British Academy of Film and Television Arts, as well as an Emmy and recent Golden Globe for TV series ‘Mildred Pierce’ and a Grammy for the best spoken word album for children. But still that sense of a ‘jobbing’ actor remains. The life she imagined and the life she has achieved are totally separate, presuming that her life as an actor would require occasional bouts of employment in a metaphorical delicatessen. It is the reality of life as an actor, something she learned as a young child from her family. Kate explained it away thus. “Insecurity is what actors work with all the time.” She credits her work with Australian director, Jane Campion, on the film ‘Holy Smoke’ early in her career with teaching her a valuable lesson about acting. “She (Campion) asked me, ‘Do you need to be liked?’ I replied that I didn’t really care and I don’t care if I’m criticised. Jane then asked, ‘Do you want an audience to like you?’ I said, ‘I think I do.’ ‘Well forget it,’ she said. ‘You’ll have to get over wanting to be liked.’ ‘I’ll always be grateful to her for that.” Her choice of roles may require Kate Winslet not to be liked but in real life her refreshing attitude to body image, her self and her career has endeared her to generations of fans. The chubby child has come through and is winning on every level imaginable.

my word

deb farnworth-wood “What’s wrong with you little girl?” The speaker was UK Celebrity Apprentice patriarch Baron Alan Sugar as he looked across at Deb Farnworth on a train speeding through England in 1990. Sitting in one of the many rooms of her Australian Skin Clinics in Ashmore, the now Deb Farnworth-Wood is detailing her encounter with the famed British business tycoon. “He was famous even then, but he could see I was tired and he asked me these very direct questions about what I was doing and where I wanted to be – in short he asked the right questions.” That chance meeting was significant because it set in motion a series of events that led to Deb eventually moving to Australia. Born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1963 to English parents, Deb moved back to the UK at three when her parents divorced and then split her time between her senior civil servant father in Hong Kong and property developer mother in the North West of England. From an early age Deb knew she wanted to go into business and at 16 enrolled in a business management course. Upon graduating her working life began with a

major hotel chain. “At 19 I was in charge of five very successful bars but as with my entire working career I was always looking for the next challenge and to move up. It was the time of Maggie Thatcher and for young women such as myself it was very empowering having a female P.M.” Always looking for the next challenge Deb in turn worked for a carpet and furniture retailer then a female friendly, pink hammer selling, DIY chain before moving on to work for the Burton Group. “My role became the trouble-shooter. I was offered the jobs that no one else wanted to do and because I was determined not to fail it was a source of pride to me that I succeeded at the task.” It was high pressure work involving long hours and travel. The chance encounter with Alan Sugar encouraged Deb to change careers and she went to work with a medical practice. “When I started in 1991 the turnover was £700,000. By 1993 I was the first non-GP to be a partner in general practice in the UK. The same year we became the first non-pharmacists to own a pharmacy and a year later introduced a drive-thru for prescriptions because we were so busy. When I left nine years later the group turnover had grown to £9 million. It became a super clinic and we were considered ground breakers in the delivery of patient services.” The connection to Australia was established from her marriage in 1993 to Shaun Wood on the Sunshine Coast. “We had friends who were living here and Shaun absolutely loved Australia but we both had careers in England. By 2006 we had two children– Jacques now 14 and Chloe 12. I had gone as far as possible with the medical practice and was bored. I was out here on holiday in 2006 and saw Australian Skin Clinics advertised for sale. On impulse I bought it, rang Shaun and he immediately said let’s do it. We sold everything, luckily at the top of the UK property boom, and moved here in 2007. One of the reasons I bought it was because I could see that the business was able to be franchised and after the initial consolidation we are now expanding.” In March in will be five years since Deb and her family moved across the globe to start a new life. “It has been the best move. Besides the water and lifestyle, the people are so down to earth and friendly. I love talking to people, and I love learning new things and my work let’s me do both. The only down side is that I’m often told that I have an accent when in reality it’s Australians who have the accents,” she laughs.

King cavill John Cavill talks about his life, work and dressing stars for the red carpet.

What was the catalyst for starting out in business on your own? I think having a “can do” mentality and being self-motivated inspired me after a lot of practical experience both in Australia and overseas. Oh! And getting a $1,000 Bankcard... true!

help of my long term partner, Charles Williams. Also the approach to people when selling is so important – the desire of wanting them to look their best as well as working closely with colleagues who want to do the same.

Was there something that you would describe as your ‘big break’ in the fashion industry? Because I was totally unfocused and far too active for a classroom, my big break was to jump on a ship at 17 for London. And before you ask, yes, there were planes then! Many kind people introduced me to the “how to” mentality. Later it was whilst working with Trent Nathan who taught me the power of being positive and who pushed me never to doubt myself. Finally my best friend supported my business with the necessary P.R. to secure visibility for the brand.

Retail has changed dramatically in the last ten years via shopping online and overseas purchases. How are you managing to draw customers to your boutiques? Keeping our customers means maintaining the concept that we are not a ‘deal’. Yes we have “web” visibility but we do not sell on-line. I maintain that we are the “gurus” who can assist you with choice and save you, the customer, from making a bad choice. Some women pay hundreds of dollars for personal shoppers or stylists to assist with their wardrobe. At John Cavill, the sales consultants do this every day for free!

Your reputation is founded on the impeccable elegance, cut and style of your clothes. Has that evolved over the years or has that always been your design mantra? For me it’s about being classic but fresh and using the best fabrics to enhance the all important fit. A true compliment today is that people are still wearing my styles. Customers comment all the time,” I just can’t throw them out” and often they want the same design again. If I had a dollar for every time I’m told, “I have a dress of yours, I’ve had it so long and it still looks great.”

Who or what has been your greatest influence in fashion? Clever innovative design, colour, fabric, images, and street fashion – it all influences me. The natural gravitation of fashion transfers to my own creative vision of updated style.

Do you design for a particular style of woman? I think my approach to styling appeals to certain women of similar style regardless of age. You started in 1978 which makes this your 34th in business. In something as fickle as fashion what’s been the secret to maintaining your edge? All the above and “living” the business I love as well as the 18

label magazine autumn 2012

You have dressed many an Australian star for the red carpet. Are any of them particular favourites? Lisa McCune would be my personal favourite. Firstly for her respect and secondly, she pays for the clothes. Did you come to fashion via design school or is it a God given talent combined with hard work and a great eye for detail? It’s a combination of keeping my eyes wide open, my partner Charles and a lot of hard work. If there is a “style gene” I may have it but it’s a bit like the gay gene. Either it’s there or it’s not! What is your secret skill or talent? I would say being organised and setting up systems. Also I love selling although, it’s still a secret to me.

need a lift?

Give yourself and your figure a boost with a breast augmentation at Cosmedic and Skin Clinic. Do your breasts need a lift? Could your breasts do with a boost? Dr. John Flynn of the Cosmedic and Skin Clinic talks about the who, what and where of breast augmentation. “Breast augmentations are becoming more and more popular, particularly on the Gold Coast,” says Dr. Flynn. “There are two groups of women who choose to have breast augmentation surgery. The first is a younger group who very commonly have not had children. These patients are looking for a fuller shape for their figure. The second group consists of slightly older patients who have had children and therefore their breasts are emptier. They are trying to put back what they had before.” “Because there is a difference in the texture and tone of different women’s own natural tissue, we need to approach the two groups of patients differently. This is particularly the case with some mature patients because more care needs to be taken to fill the breast envelope properly because the breast tissues usually don’t have as much natural support.” Dr Flynn explains that especially with the younger age group sometimes the implant has to be placed under the muscle to disguise the shape of the implant a little more. “This is particularly important when the patient is leaner and doesn’t have a lot of breast tissue. In the other age group it is more common for the implant to be placed in front of the muscle because these women may have a little less natural support in their tissue and it is important to pull up the loose skin. Sometimes older patients may need a lift as well as an implant. Putting an implant in will give a bit of a lift almost automatically but sometimes the patient needs a little something extra as well.” Before you make that decision it is possible to look into the future. “With the arrival of the new 3D camera technology, Axis 3, at Cosmedic & Skin Clinic we can help show you the possible outcome of your procedure on your own 3D body image. Which implants do I choose? What size do I need? Do I need a breast lift? Will I be happy with the result and will my result look natural? Everything you wanted to know and see about how a possible breast augmentation could look on your body can be shown to you in the privacy of our consulting rooms allowing you to make a decision with confidence,” says Dr. Flynn. If you are not happy with the shape, look or feel of your breasts then it may be worthwhile investigating having a breast augmentation with the team at the Cosmedic and Skin Clinic. The answers given above are a general guide only and a proper consultation with Dr. Flynn can explain fully everything involved in any procedure you have in mind. Call Cosmedic and Skin Clinic on 07 5555 7888.

polished glass New year, new menu but still the same great food and service.

It’s a new year and most of us have long forgotten that ill considered resolution. The team at Glass Dining and Lounge Bar at Marina Mirage however have continued on their stated path to provide a better dining experience for their customers. A new menu has been launched by executive chef David Pommier but regular diners need not panic because the perennial favourites have been retained with a selection of innovative and tasty delights added to the fare. It begins, as with all menus, with the entrees. A beautifully fresh Kingfish Carpaccio with coriander and wasabi mousse, some baby watercress and an unusual bell pepper dressing. Another addition to the menu is the open style lasagne. What sets this dish apart is the use of apple cider marinated goat served with fresh homemade pasta, char-grilled asparagus and a Shiraz jus. Yes it sounds different but it is a stunning dish. Vegetarians have not been forgotten either because a gazpacho, made from chilled baby fennel served with a caramelised onion and goat’s curd stack, is also new. Drizzled with a Kalamata olive essence, this is something to relish. The mains have also undergone some culinary tweaking. For the fish lovers, a Western Australian Cone Bay barramundi fillet resting on a pine needle nest served with a trio of Provencale summer vegetable crepes and Kaffir lime leaf froth is certain to set foodies tongues wagging and salivating. If you love game then be sure to sample the Onkaparinga Park Venison Medallions. Prepared properly, as this is, when served with Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnut risotto, garlic chive and a coffee caramel glaze it is a dish that will be remembered long after you’ve left the restaurant.

Dining with a water view always evokes a longing for seafood and there is no better way to satisfy that hunger than with a Glass Seafood Platter. The list of inclusions is seemingly endless but the staples of Moreton Bay Bugs, scallops, oysters and prawns have been added to with King crab, snapper, vongole, Szechuan pepper calamari and blood orange Hollandaise half lobster. Served with rocket, pear and parmesan shoestring fries, this platter is literally fit for a king or queen. Lovers of dessert are in for a special delight. If you love soufflés, and who doesn’t, the kitchen has created a devilishly decadent treat. A coconut and Amaretto cherry soufflé served with Bourbon flavoured, Belgium, white chocolate sauce. Staying with the devilish side you could also consider the cappuccino mousse. Add a spiced biscuit, passionfruit jelly, nougatine crumble and wattle seed foam and the explosion of flavours in your mouth will transport you to a heavenly state. Owners Patrik Gennari and Shanan Harmelin are industry professionals in the truest sense of the word. Not for them the notion of resting on their laurels. Their intention is to do justice to the $1 million original fit-out and stunning views of the Broadwater and magnificent yachts moored outside. This is no ordinary eatery. With the bar alone costing in excess of $80,000 and the open plan kitchen allowing diners to see the chefs at work over a glass range hood, (of course it too is made of glass) Patrik and Shanan are determined to continue on their quest to improve every aspect of the experience at Glass Dining and Lounge Bar. For bookings visit glassrestaurant.com.au or phone 5527 1009.

Lentil Salad with Celery Leaves Serves 4 ½ cup (100g) organic puy-style lentils ¹⁄3 cup (80ml) extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 30g traditionally smoked belly bacon, trimmed of skin and cut into 1cm pieces 1 onion, roughly chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tablespoon rosemary leaves, roughly chopped ¼ cup (60ml) verjuice 2 tomatoes, diced 2 sticks celery, finely diced, pale green leaves roughly chopped and reserved 4 sprigs lemon thyme, leaves picked, chopped Handful flat-leaf parsley leaves, roughly chopped 25g Parmigiano Reggiano (optional), shaved Place the lentils in a saucepan, cover with 3 cups (750ml) water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 15-18 minutes or until tender, making sure the water does not boil. Drain the lentils, transfer to a bowl and drizzle over half

the oil and season with sea salt to taste. Set aside and keep warm. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium–high heat, then add the bacon and cook until crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to drain, then set aside. Meanwhile, return the frying pan to mediumhigh heat and add the remaining oil. Cook the onion for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Reduce the heat to medium, then stir in the garlic and rosemary and cook for 3 minutes. Increase the heat to high, then add the verjuice and cook, stirring, for about 2 minutes or until the verjuice has almost evaporated. Season with a good pinch of sea salt, remove from the heat and add to the warm lentils, along with the reserved bacon, and stir to combine. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Place the tomato, celery, celery leaves, thyme and parsley into a large bowl, season and toss together. Add the cooled lentil mixture and gently stir to combine. Taste and adjust the seasoning, then add an extra drizzle of olive oil if required. Scatter over the shaved Parmigiano just before serving, if using.

RECIPES Pumpkin Pizza with Olives and Bocconcini Makes 6-8 600g ripe pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 1.5-2cm pieces ½ cup (125ml) extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup (60ml) verjuice 500g fresh bocconcini or fior di latte, cut into 2 cm pieces 60g pitted kalamata olives Flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve Pizza dough 15g fresh yeast or 2 teaspoons dried yeast ½ teaspoon white sugar, if needed 1¼ cups (310ml) lukewarm water 500 g unbleached strong plain flour, plus extra for dusting 2 tablespoons whole milk powder ¼ cup (60ml) extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing Polenta, for dusting

Rhubarb And Apple Crumble Serves 4-6 ¼ cup (55g) soft brown sugar ¼ cup (60ml) verjuice 50g unsalted butter, melted, plus 20g extra, chopped 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored 20 sticks rhubarb, washed, trimmed and cut into 3 cm lengths Cream or ice cream, to serve Crumble mixture 1 cup (150g) plain flour ½ cup (110g) soft brown sugar 1 cup (90g) rolled oats 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 60g unsalted butter, chopped Preheat fan-forced oven to 180°C (200°C). For the crumble mixture, combine the flour, sugar, oats and spices in a large bowl. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Set aside. Combine the sugar, verjuice and melted butter in a bowl. Cut the apple into very thin slices and add to the verjuice mixture, tossing to combine well. Transfer to a 2 litre baking dish (mine is 33cm x 18cm x 5cm) and spread out evenly. Scatter the rhubarb over the apple. Bake the apple and rhubarb mixture for 20 minutes. Spread the crumble mixture evenly over the top and dot with the extra chopped butter; don’t press down too much or the crumble will become soggy. Bake for a further 30-35 minutes or until the fruit mixture bubbles around the edges and the crumble is nicely browned. Spoon out at the table and serve with cream or ice cream. 56

First make the pizza dough. If using fresh yeast, combine with the ½ teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon of the warm water in a small bowl, dissolving the yeast with your fingers or mashing it with a fork. Set aside for 5-10 minutes or until foamy. Mix the flour, milk powder and 1½ teaspoons salt in a large bowl, then make a well in the centre and add the olive oil and yeast mixture (or dried yeast). Pour in the remaining warm water and stir until well combined, then turn the dough out onto a lightly floured bench and knead for 10 minutes or until shiny and smooth. Place dough in a well-oiled bowl. Cover bowl with plastic film and leave in a draught-free spot for 1-1½ hours or until doubled in size. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured bench, then knock it back and knead again for a few minutes. Divide the dough into 6 or 8 equal portions. (At this point you can cover the dough and store in the fridge, if making in advance.) Roll each piece into a ball and leave to rest under a damp tea towel for 15 minutes. Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball of dough to a thickness of 1cm. Meanwhile, preheat a fan-forced oven to 240°C (240°C). Toss the pumpkin in ¼ cup (60ml) of the olive oil, then season with the salt and pepper. Spread the pumpkin on a heavy-based baking tray with a lip, making sure not to crowd it. Roast for 20 minutes or until golden brown, then drizzle with verjuice to deglaze. Roast for a further 5 minutes, then set aside to cool. Working in batches, stretch each piece of dough by resting it over the back of your hands, with clenched fists and your knuckles pressed together. Gently pull your hands apart, allowing the weight of the dough to stretch itself. (This step keeps the air in the dough, making for a lighter pizza crust.) Alternatively, roll the dough a little thinner with a rolling pin. Lightly dust a pizza tile or heavybased baking tray with polenta and lay the dough on it. Repeat with the remaining dough. Lightly drizzle the trays of dough with oil and par-bake for 7 minutes or until golden underneath and puffed. Sprinkle over some bocconcini, then top with the pumpkin and olives (the crust will deflate slightly when it is covered with the topping). Bake for another 10–12 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Sprinkle the pizzas with parsley and add a last flourish of oil, then slice and serve at once.

Ol’ Kentuck

Patrick McEwan, Mixologist, Brown-Forman Australia

It may sound like the name of a distinguished wine maker but Woodford Reserve is in fact a brand of premium Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Distilled in central Kentucky, each bottle is numbered with a batch and bottle number giving further authenticity to their reputation as a premium Bourbon. The brand has also been a multiple gold medal winner at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits competition and is consistently ranked by other such rating competitions in the top echelon of spirits. Their Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select is the “Official Bourbon” of the Kentucky Derby and the Breeder’s Cup. The official tasting notes describe it thus – ‘It is woody and has light notes of charcoal and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is smooth with subtle spice. It has a delicate woody sweetness, but not quite as potent as the nose.’ If Woodford Reserve is good enough for the Kentucky Derby, try it in these sizzling cocktails.

It will mark her biggest tour yet with 90 shows and will include her first concerts in Australia in nearly 20 years. Her involvement in the production of the album was described by one of her producers, Martin Solveig thus. “She is as involved as you can be in the recording process. I was assuming that she would spend only an hour or two in the studio per day but absolutely not. I mean we co-produced the track and it’s not just written on the credits.” Passion and pride – it shows in this recording. Add to your collection now.

MOTORING

Feel the Kate Bennett discovers the Toyota Camry Atara has it all – spacious, innovative and a joy to drive.

74

label magazine AUTUMN 2012

What a Grand Feeling If you’re lucky enough to buy a new Toyota Camry Atara from Grand Motors Toyota, start practising your jumps because that ‘feeling’ is going to be happening a lot. It is quite simply a divine car to drive. From the first use of the keyless entry, to that first feeling (there’s that word again) of acceleration when you drive out of the dealership, this is a car designed to make you smile. My normal run around car is a similar sized sedan but my two children, who were stationed in the back as Mummy did the school run, were amazed at how much room they had in the back seat - they quite like the idea of being chauffeur driven apparently. While it is officially a medium sized car the interior room is nothing short of astonishing. According to the technical people at Grand Motors Toyota the extra room is because the Atara shares its body with the Aurion which is a large car thereby giving the Atara, which has four cylinders as against the Aurion’s six, much more room. The Atara has a vast array of special features as standard. It comes with seven airbags, Bluetooth audio, USB and auxiliary input, cruise control and alloy wheels. As a nontech head, having my phone programmed with all my contacts in under 30 seconds was nothing short of a miracle. Also included are an electric driver’s seat, reversing camera, (audible reversing sensors are available for an extra fee), dual-zone air-conditioning, no-cost metallic paint, touch screen audio system and 17 inch alloy wheels. Other features are drink holders for every passenger, a boot that is big enough to hold six month’s grocery shopping, telephone and radio controls on the steering wheel, a great sound system, satellite navigation and that comforting ‘touch of a button’ feeling where every control is at your fingertips. A nice touch for me as a mother was the seatbelt warning indicators for the rear seats. It’s nice to know for certain that your children are buckled up.

Buying a car is a big step; it’s important you trust the people you are dealing with. At Grand Motors Toyota Southport you can rely on the team to know their stuff, and deal with you honestly. Grand Motors Toyota have been one of the most respected names in the motor vehicle industry for over 60 years and they take their reputation very seriously. Grand Motors Toyota is a proud market leader, receiving some of the highest recognition awards in Sales, Service, Parts and Business Management, including the Presidents Award for Excellence in 1992 and 2004, the Knights Award for twelve consecutive years, and the Toyota Decade of Dominance Award 1990 to 1999.

Cruising down to the beach shack, or doing the school run; the Camry Atara does it all!

There are some important technical details which I need to include so quoting from the big book of Toyota here they are. A new 2.5 litre engine has been developed which give a respectable throaty sound via the twin exhausts and also a tad more power than previous models. A standard six speed automatic transmission delivers more than enough get up and go. Paddle gear shift levers are included although the car worked ultra smoothly without my getting involved in the gear selection process. The boys won’t understand this but when something works just fine, why fiddle with it? There are friends of mine who have cars that cost three times the price yet the Atara has more room and better yet, even more gadgets. It also handles like a dream be it on the highway or zipping around town. At a tad under $36,000, with all of the above extras included, you have to wonder how Toyota does it for the price. Get yourself down to the amazing crew at Grand Motors Toyota and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Visit grandmotors.com.au for more details on this amazing new vehicle.

If you are in the market for a new or used car you owe it to yourself to give the team at Grand Motors Toyota a call. They have a range that is second to none, and they back it up with knowledge, experience and integrity.

Above: The sporty 2.5 litre four-cyclinder engine; below: extras abound in the Toyota Camry Atara SL interior.

ISSUE

Ladies,

assets! r u o y t c e t pro Women who have gone through a separation will be the first to tell you that the process is daunting, expensive, lengthy and exhausting. You work hard, build your wealth, meet “Mr Right” and fall head over heels into a relationship, only to realise some years later that “Mr Right” was not all you expected. Suddenly, the joyride comes to an abrupt stop as your relationship is reduced to paperwork and numbers. It is a harsh reality when you are told by your solicitor that when it comes to your property matters, it does not matter that he cheated on you, and that it does not necessarily matter that he did not bring the same amount of wealth into the relationship or contribute as much as you did financially... the reality is, he potentially has a claim to your assets, even those you owned prior to your relationship. You can fight it in Court and potentially win, but in most cases; it will cost you more than it’s worth, both financially and emotionally. So what do you do? At the risk of saying the words that are still considered by many as taboo, you protect your assets, and you get him to sign a Binding Financial Agreement, or what is more commonly referred to as a Pre-nuptial Agreement. Sure, it’s easier said than done, after all, how do you ask the man you love to sign a document that in short says, “in case we don’t work out, I keep my things, and you can’t touch them”. It implies you do not trust the relationship will work and that you do not trust him... at least that is how a lot of people see it. What you are really saying is, “I have worked hard to build my wealth. If things were to get ugly between us, promise me you won’t try to take away what I have worked so hard on my own to build.” A Binding Financial Agreement will protect the assets you have accumulated prior to moving in with or marrying your partner. At the same time, it will allow you to decide together, in advance, and whilst you both have each other’s best interests in mind, what you think is fair and what you will do with your property in the event you separate. You can do this and be proactive, or alternatively, take a reactive approach and try and sort through the mess when both of you are broken hearted and potentially upset at one another. Spend a little now to secure your interests, or spend a lot later in a bitter fight to the end, where potentially, no one wins. Binding Financial Agreements can be entered into prior to or once a couple are living together; and at any time prior to or during a marriage. If you have separated, and you are concerned about your rights, we can also assist you. Contact our Family Law Solicitor Vanessa Hernandez on 07 5555 0000.
