Mi investigación se basa en la mano humana; como se ve a través del arte y la cultura coreana me llevó a enfocarme en (y enfatizar) la uña. Las piezas finales existen entre lo hecho a máquina y lo orgánico, entre la alta tecnología y la antigüedad , extraño y conocido a la vez.”

Las uñas largas han sido asociadas con el estatus social por muchas culturas antiguas, comúnmente equiparando las uñas largas con una alta posición social. Además, los coreanos creían que la uña era un receptáculo para el alma o espíritu. Según el folklore, se debía poner atención al cortar y desechar las uñas para proteger el alma de malos espíritus, ya que podría asumir la identidad de uno a través de ellas. Esta noción de misterio puede parecer pasado de moda para nosotros, pero es interesante observar que recortes de uñas son comúnmente utilizados como muestras en pruebas de ADN. Es como si el científico hubiera sustituido a lo supersticioso. Hoy en día, las uñas postizas abren muchas preguntas en cuanto a cómo podemos conciliar lo espiritual con la mecanización y producido en masa. Estas son preguntas que he tratado de investigar a través del trabajo que aquí se presenta. No busqué respuestas, sólo poder explorar a través de la forma la posibilidad de expresar conceptos aparentemente dispares en un solo trabajo.
Social status has been associated with long nails by many ancient cultures, commonly equating long nails with high social standing. Additionally the Koreans believed that the fingernail was a receptacle for the soul or spirit. According to folklore, care was to be taken when cutting and disposing of fingernails to protect the soul from evil as it could assume one’s identity. This notion of mystery seems old fashioned to us these days, but it is interesting to note that fingernail clippings are commonly used as samples in DNA testing. It is as if the scientific has replaced the superstitious. Today, fake nails bring up many questions as to how we reconcile the spiritual with the mechanized and mass produced. These are questions that I tried to investigate through the work presented here. I didn't seek answers, only to explore through form, the possibility of expressing seemingly disparate concepts in a single work.
