CHAIR’S MESSAGE | I

WORLD TRADE WEEK:

Southern California The Evolution of Trade in a Digital World Every year in May, we celebrate the benefits that global trade and investment brings to Southern California. The 92nd Annual World Trade Week Breakfast Kickoff initiates a month of seminars and events reminding us of our great responsibility to adhere to the tenets of its designation: To promote and acknowledge the importance of international trade, infrastructure investment and economic expansion. This year’s theme, “Evolution of Trade in a Digital World,” should not only remind us, but also allow us to reflect on the drastic changes in the trade industry that we’ve experienced in recent years: from the method in which raw materials are sourced, to the final delivery of finished products into consumer hands. These changes, pioneered by technological advancements, have demonstrated their continuous impact through an immense modification of trade paths, where virtually millions of people can now participate and benefit from easier access to goods and resources. However, as any transitioning industry does, we must also overcome some inevitable challenges. Now, more than ever, shippers are tasked with increasing their efficiency, implementing an autotomized supply-chain, and personalizing a product. The click of a button on a retailer’s website comes with the expectation of a flawless digital journey; one that remains entirely unknown to the customer but results in an on-time delivery right to their doorstep. As the intricate web of relationships between manufacturers, operators, shippers, and regulators grow, we must understand that this digital approach to globalization is fundamentally opening doors to new competition and economic advantages. Today, more than 200,000 workers in the region are directly involved in the international trade sector, and this number is set to grow as digitization grips all aspects of our day to day lives. We continue to witness the once stable transportation market adjust to new expectations with the consumer-driven expansion of warehousing and distribution channels. Furthermore, we have seen monumental steps taken towards the development of environmentally sustainable technology, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence. Collectively, our industry must embrace these advancements and work together to educate, empower and propel our partners forward. Please join me in promoting and enhancing the benefits of commercial and industrial exchanges with consumers across the globe. This year, I am greatly humbled to serve as the 2018 Chairman and look forward to sharing this joyous occasion with all of you.

II | U.S. DEPT. OF COMMERCE’S MESSAGE

MESSAGE FROM

U.S. Secretary of Commerce The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce (LAACC) is an integral part of the Nation’s annual World Trade Week celebration, highlighting the opportunities available to U.S companies that engage in international commerce. Exports strengthen our economic security, which leads to strengthening our national security. The work of private-sector organizations such as the LAACC to assist exporters in local communities throughout the United States is vital to leveraging our efforts and helping to improve America’s market share around the globe. The Chamber’s dedication to improving American businesses’ ability to succeed in trade encourages entrepreneurs and small, medium-sized, and large businesses to compete and win in global marketplace. President Trump is revitalizing trade policy and eliminating policies that weaken America’s leverage in foreign markets. The Administration has already taken significant steps to expand trade in a way that is freer and fairer for all Americans, through breaking down trade berries, updating current trade agreements, protecting intellectual property rights, strictly enforcing our trade laws, and strongly advocating for all U.S. workers, farmers, ranchers, service providers, and businesses, large and small – to assure the fairest possible treatment of American interests in the U.S. market and in other markets around the world. As part of breaking down barriers, the Administration is working to reduce costly and needless red tape, fees, and paperwork, relieving American business from irrational burdens that are time consuming and hinder a company’s ability to pursue export opportunities that support economic growth and job creation. American workers will benefit and compete in a fairer world that rewards hard work and innovation. Within the U.S. Department of Commerce, the International Trade Administration’s U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, through both our U.S. and overseas field-based teams, are strategically focused on aligning American businesses with global opportunities, working closely with partners such as the LAACC. Fixing our Nation’s infrastructure, equipping our military, securing our borders, and promoting fair and reciprocal trade is paramount to America’s safety and economic standing in the global market. Our continued work with the LAACC contributes to the rebuilding and reinvigoration of a safe, strong, and proud America. Sincerely,

WILBUR ROSS

MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES’ MESSAGE | IV

MESSAGE FROM

City of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

May 4, 2018 Dear Friends, On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 92nd Annual World Trade Week. I am encouraged to know that World Trade Week grew from a week-long to a month-long celebration. It demonstrates the importance of trade in Los Angeles and the growing commitment from the international trade community. Los Angeles continues to develop as one of the most important gateways in the world. We lead the nation in trade, and last year we saw record numbers for containers moved at the Port of Los Angeles and passengers serviced at LAX, bringing more of the global economy to the city and region. As Angelenos, we see the benefits of trade in our work, our homes, and throughout our communities. We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that international trade drives our economic prosperity, creates more jobs, and improves the quality of life for all Angelenos. The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce is a crucial partner in expanding the benefits of international trade in Los Angeles. We appreciate the Chamber for convening leaders of the international trade community to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance and benefits of a more global city. Best wishes for a successful World Trade Week. Sincerely,

MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI

6 | HISTORY

WORLD TRADE WEEK HISTORY The World Trade Week concept was conceived in 1926 and first observed in 1927 in Southern California. World trade continues to significantly contribute to the nation’s economy and has developed a vast new horizon for America’s businesses.

Celebrating a month of world trade in May

In 1926, Stanley T. Olafson, then manager of the World Trade Department of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, conceived

the idea of a World Trade Week observance in Southern California. This was during a period of isolationism and under the conditions prevailing during the heyday of the restrictive Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. In 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt officially proclaimed World Trade Week as a national observance by the United States Government and selected the third week of May each year, which includes May 22, National Maritime Day. Initially, the purpose of World Trade Week was to promote the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Following World War II, the expanding economy and potential for international commerce growth created an opportunity for World Trade Week to expand its scope to include all facilities and organizations in the Southern California area involved in world trade. Under the guidance of its founding sponsors — the L.A. Area Chamber, Los Angeles World Airports, the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles — the original week-long observance has now grown to more than 30 events held each year throughout the month of May in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura. This tremendous nonprofit endeavor is further supported by Southern California companies who offer sponsorship for the many programs and informational materials the World Trade Week Committee creates each year.
