L’ORGANO 1979–2019 PICCOLO SPOLETO

2

WELCOME TO L’ORGANO 2019 I would like to extend a warm welcome to each of you as we celebrate forty years of pipe organ music! Since 1979, L’Organo is the only music series that has run through the forty-one years of Piccolo Spoleto in its original form, with the exception of 1990, when L’Organo was cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. Initially, recitalists were mostly drawn from local and regional talent, professors, students, and church musicians; today our well-known organ series attracts talent nationwide. It has provided a platform for some fine young players at the start of their careers and highlighted many seasoned professionals. It is with great enthusiasm that we introduce a choice line-up of recitals including two piano and organ duos with works of impressive virtuosity. Two recitals with other instruments will feature diverse organ music selections accompanied by the trumpet and/or cello. I am pleased to announce the return to the series of St. Philip’s Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church, with its rebuilt console. The anniversary program book contains complete lists with names of indiviuals, groups, venues, events, and sponsors who have been essential for the success of L’Organo. Since our first recital, the series has presented the organ music of over 500 composers from the fourteenth to the twenty-first century–from Abreu to Zipoli, consisted of standard repertoire by the great masters, much unfamiliar literature, transcriptions, avant-garde, and premiered works. The book includes a catalog with names of composers, titles of compositions, and years performed. On behalf of the L’Organo committee, thank you to all of the musicians whose passion and skills will create memories not easily forgotten. Thanks also to the co-sponsors and donors; congregations, clergy, organists, and staff at the host churches and chapel, who so kindly provide the use of their instruments and historic buildings. To our audience, your attendance over many years is greatly appreciated and the generous freewill offerings enable L’Organo to present these quality recitals. Sincerely,

Robert E. Gant, DMA Chair, L’Organo Image: 1979 Piccolo Spoleto program book. Collection of the South Carolina Historical Society, courtesy of the John Bennett Estate-silhouettes. 3

IN APPRECIATION Ellen Dressler Moryl Described as “an artistic whirlwind,” Ellen Dressler became the appointed Director of Cultural Affairs, City of Charleston in 1978. As the newly organized program named Piccolo Spoleto premiered in 1979, she played the central role in developing this city-sponsored festival designed to highlight southeast regional talented artists, performers, and writers. Presented concurrently with Spoleto Festival USA, Piccolo Spoleto provided admission-free events to all neighborhoods of the community, and encompassed varying mediums including art, music, dance, and drama. Upon her retirement in 2013, then Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. called Ellen “part of the creative and artistic heart of the city.” Piccolo Spoleto remains one of her most significant legacies. Ellen is commended for her visionary leadership which has so richly benefitted the arts for the City of Charleston and the State of South Carolina.

William D. Gudger Co-founders William Gudger and Benjamin Hutto organized a Piccolo-sponsored, church-related daily morning series featuring the pipe organs in several downtown historic churches. They named the series “L’Organo: The Organ In Recital.” During the initial years of L’Organo, Bill worked tirelessly to promote the series, ensuring its success for many years to come. He served as a coordinator for a total of sixteen years, and continues as a valuable consultant. His contributions to the musical life of Charleston have extended far beyond L’Organo: as a professor of music, church musician, accompanist for innumerable ensembles, and soloist.

In memoriam W. Benjamin Hutto, III (1947–2015) Charlestonian Benjamin Hutto served on the L’Organo committee for six years and performed or assisted twelve recitals during his stay in Charleston. Ben initiated “Kids meet the King of Instruments”; a program demonstrating the pipe organ for schoolchildren. His efforts to highlight music of the pipe organ as the centerpiece of Piccolo Spoleto’s classical music program has created a greater public awareness and appreciation of the organ in recital and the instruments in Charleston. He later became Organist/Choirmaster at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, Washington, DC, and Director of Performing Arts at St. Albans School for boys and the National Cathedral School for girls.

Scott Watson Scott Watson began his tenure as executive director at Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs in 2013, where he oversees more than 500 performing, literary, and visual arts events during the seventeen- day Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Other largescale events under his direction include Holiday Magic in Historic Charleston, City Gallery at Waterfront Park, Charleston Farmers Market, and MOJA Arts Festival, to name a few. His efforts are foremost on issues that affect the creative sector and local artists that enrich the community. Scott is an avid advocate for promoting diverse cultural programs as a resource for artists and audiences alike. His passion and knowledge is evident as he continues to fulfill the City of Charleston’s longstanding tradition of artistic excellence. 4

IN MEMORIUM JAMES POLZOIS, 2019 L’ORGANO COVER ARTIST Born in Iowa, Army veteran James Polzois (1939–2018) was a Charleston resident for over forty years. James is highly regarded as a graphic artist, who specialized in architectural renderings and paintings of Charleston scenes of the 1930s to the 80s. After twenty years of research, he wrote about Denmark Vesey and “the rising” of a slave revolt aganist the city of Charleston in 1822. A man of many talents, he installed a 27-note pedalboard on the 1845 Erben organ in the French Protestant (Huguenot) Church in 1984, were he served as organist at the time. James was a L’Organo recitalist in 1984 and an associate on the committee in 1988. This cover features his measured drawing of the historic 1823 Thomas Hall organ case in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Charleston, SC. Three additional historic organ case drawings were featured on L’Organo programs in 2000, 2005, and collectively on the program book cover for 2011–14.
