This assignment is to encourage students to have more democratic exchanges whereby each student has a voice that will be heard by anyone who chooses to read his or her comments within the online forum. The purpose is for students to gain professional interchange, and seek ideas among their peers through electronic communication to facilitate the process. Forums are completed within 2 hours of the specified week. Each student will be required to conclude a summary or reflection of their personal thoughts of each forum. We were also tasked to participate in a series of webinar called “Professional Development Week” (PDW) during week 8, where we are required to conclude a summary or reflection of our personal thoughts of the selected PDW seminar. Each student had to join a minimum of 6 seminars (each about an hour or an hour and a half), and they were quite informative to listen.

Summary of Forum 1 Topic : Regulating Malaysia Interior Design Industry Abstract: The importance of the Architect Act and Rules extends beyond safeguarding the public's interests but fostering trust and accountability of Malaysia design industry. Amidst the rising cases of unregistered interior design companies engaging in illegal practices, such as portfolio misuse and deposit scams, underscore the associated risk to clients and the importance of regulation. The distinction between registered and non-registered interior designers in Malaysia is pivotal, ensuring professionalism, competence, and adherence to ethical standards. What proactive measures can the industry and regulatory bodies take to further enhance consumer protection and maintain the integrity of interior design services in Malaysia? Also, how would the rise of AI contribute to this matter. Discuss.

After the forum, I strongly believe that an amount of counter measures are required in maintaining the integrity of registered architects and interior designers. Cases of scamming the public for the sake of money and endangering the occupants withing the space is a very unethical thing for humans. Strict auditing on companies who are not registered under any of the boards will help further reduce the occurrence of such incidents. AI is something we can’t avoid even if we want to. The likelihood of AI taking over the interior design industry is a gamble. If we as designers rely too much on this computer assisted tool to aid our work, we will be no better than mindless machines. We should only consider using AI in the initial design phase, sourcing out raw ideas. The final outcome should always be by the hands of a true professional. This forum further reinforced against my doubts where I questioned if MIID should update their member list on a regular basis rather than and if current registered interior designers who did not have to undergo exams to claim the IDr title be required to resit the exam to be fair with the current generation.

Summary of Forum 2 Topic: Completion and Compliance Certificate (CCC) Abstract: A Completion and Compliance Certificate (CCC) is an essential legal document issued by the local authorities in Malaysia. It signifies that a building project has been completed according to approved plans and complies with Malaysian building codes, regulations, and safety standards. In Malaysia, it is mandatory to obtain a CCC before a property can be legally occupied. CCC confirms that a building is safe for occupation, emphasizing public safety. It also highlights the complexities and diligence involved in the application process, underlining the importance of transparency, adherence to regulations, and cooperation between developers and local authorities to ensure that structures meet the highest standards of safety and compliance. Is CCC relevant for Interior Designers? Can we submit CCC to the Local Authorities? Who is the PSP? Is a CCC still valid when a renovation/alteration to the original plans are done? How will you advise your client? Expand and discuss the above in the context of Interior Design.

Completion and Compliance Certificate is a crucial form of legal document to be issued by the local authorities within the country. It is a complex process which could take an unspecified duration of time depending on the efficiency of the involved authorities. It is highly relevant for interior designers as the designers are required to ensure that any construction work is in compliance with building codes and standards if any alterations or renovations are made to the space. Professional architects are identified as a responsible profession for overseeing the entire housing projects development that resulting in the issuance of quality housing through Certificate of Completion and Compliance. The appointed architects referred as Principal Submitting Person (PSP). Mostly everyone within the forum agreed that significant alterations or renovations are required to have a CCC reissued to obtain the green light towards the modification of the original plan. Consultation with the local authorities is highly recommended to ensure proper compliance. I also believe that clients also hold the right to understand and be informed of any changes made to the interior spaces and to request for proper approvals and compliance. Interior designers should hold the responsibility to inform them of such information.

Summary of Forum 3 Topic: Passive Fire Protection Abstract: Does passive fire protection represent a foundational pillar of fire safety? Building designs comply with Malaysia's Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) 1984, combining both passive and active fire protection systems for comprehensive safety measures. This delves deeply into the significance of fire protection systems, elucidates their essential components, and intricately explores their synergistic role in fortifying the safety of both occupants and property within built structures. Emphasizing the vital nature of these systems, this discourse underscores how adherence to robust fire protection protocols is paramount in achieving a resilient and secure built environment. It serves as a paramount element in the construction of secure buildings. It is important as Designers to have adequate knowledge of Fire requirements for the spaces we design. Discuss in detail why Fire Safety is important for Interior Designers, and not only Architects.

This forum was interesting as it was something I had done in the previous assignment. I strongly believe that passive fire protection plays a critical role in fortifying the security of occupants and property within the constructed spaces as it serves as a foundational element of fire safety. Interior designers should be well informed about fire resistant materials as they are entrusted with the selection of fire-resistant materials, the design of layouts conducive to efficient evacuation, and the harmonization of aesthetic choices with safety considerations. By prioritizing fire safety, interior designers not only enhance the visual appeal of spaces but also uphold their professional duty in safeguarding lives and property. There were discussions if some classifications of fire safety should be eradicated due to outdated technology, and to import newer ones from overseas containing the Euroclass classifications. There was also a point made where collaboration is key in ensuring the integrity of fire safety to prevent any loop holes that may endanger the people within the space if there were to be any fire break out. Despite the strict requirements, a student mentioned that we can find innovative ways to incorporate fire-resistant materials without compromising the aesthetics of the design.

ASSIGNMENT 2

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK

Students are required to participate in Professional Development Week at Week 8, the University will require students to join at least 6 seminars & at the end of the PDW week each student will be required to conclude a summary/reflection of their personal thoughts of your selected PDW seminars.

By Kiron Kesav from Omnicom Media Group Communication planning involves identifying consumer demographics, content preferences, and competition analysis. Staying culturally attuned is crucial in advertising. Setting clear campaign objectives and evaluating success through data are vital. AI, though not new, has diverse applications, particularly Generative AI for original content creation. It accelerates data processing, but human refinement is key. Social listening unveils content trends and audience sentiments. While AI excels in data analysis, human interpretation remains crucial, especially in storytelling. Not all organizations require every form of AI, emphasizing the need for tailored adoption based on specific needs and objectives.

Summary of PDW Seminar 6 SOFT-SKILLS TO THRIVE AT WORKPLACE By Vaclav Koranda from Jebat Consulting

By Kent Tan from PwC Malaysia LinkedIn is a vital professional networking platform. Recruiters extensively use social media, online searches, and value an applicant's online presence. Interacting on LinkedIn is key, but professionalism is crucial when inquiring about jobs. Effective email communication demands a clear subject, proper grammar, and a courteous sign-off. Accuracy, clarity, and thorough content review are essential. Interview etiquette includes professional attire, neat appearance, suitable environment, stable internet, and a pre-test session. Sitting posture, facial expressions, and maintaining eye contact through the camera are pivotal for a successful virtual interview. Additionally, showcasing relevant skills and accomplishments on LinkedIn can greatly enhance professional visibility.

ASSIGNMENT 2

REFLECTION Overall, both the forums and the webinars provided more insight regarding the interior design industry and other related industries that are possible career opportunities in the future. My previous take on online forums is that they do not conclude with an answer, instead it was an online argument. However, forum for this assignment proved me wrong, that as long as the forum was with a mature group of people, everything can be discussed and debated fairly and no discrimination involved. The PDW webinars were mostly informative. I attended seven of them and only one had technical issues resulting in idle time. They do provide the most basic knowledge that everyone should understand to avoid mishaps in life and during work. The content that the speakers provided were sufficient quite for a one hour session, with some additional time for question and answer to enquire more about the industry they’re from.

ASSIGNMENT 3

GROUP PRESENTATION SPREAD This assignment sets the scenario for students to to re-imagine and reconceptualize the ideal architectural practice of the future. Participants are encouraged to consider various challenges often faced by architects/designers and propose solutions, and innovative business models. In deciding the desired business context, students need to evaluate critically the data obtained in Project 1. In doing this assignment, students will be clearer of their own vision and mission in forming their own design company within the business context.

ASSIGNMENT 3

GROUP REPORT

A more detailed report is required upon completion of the spread. To further emphasize on the importance of certain aspects of starting a company and to provide relevant reference to back up the claims.

ASSIGNMENT 3

REFLECTION

This assignment helps us students to realize the hardships of starting a company. There are quite a number of things to consider, with allocating funds towards the company being the more complex issue. There are also rules to adhere and certificates to obtain in order to be a registered company within the country. Starting a company cannot be a one man job, it requires the help of a few people in order to function properly, or else things will fail.

ASSIGNMENT 4

INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION SPREAD The video was to quickly go through the information regarding the spread. Discussing only about the general points within that field of topic. Screenshots and the video link are provided in the next few pages.

ASSIGNMENT 4

REFLECTION

This assignment was a rather challenging one, as this was an individual task and there were lots of referencing to do, and considering which applies to my site building and which do not. This made me step out of my comfort zone and just complete everything according to the checklist while also looking out for some things that could be further emphasize regarding some safety topics and where to look for information.
