MINDSET TRANSFORMATION FOR EV ADOPTION A national automotive company aimed to pioneer Electric Vehicles (EVs) and build an EV ecosystem while promoting EV adoption. ATÖLYE developed a humancentered experience strategy and designed innovative interfaces and end-to-end EV ecosystem experiences. FLEXIBLE THINKING TO REDUCE HOUSEHOLD FOOD WASTE BEworks led a multi-team collaboration with Hellmann’s to design a behaviorallyinformed strategy to overcome household food waste. Our program provided families a way to think flexibly in using up the food they have—resulting in 33% food waste reduction in one of the largest and longest behavior change studies on household food waste to date.

REDUCING HOUSEHOLD ELECTRICITY DEMAND BEworks, in collaboration with regulator, utility, and technology partners, conducted a 12-month pilot aimed at reducing household electricity demand. We tested behaviorally-informed communications, using benchmarking and personalized strategies to achieve conservation goals, providing a cost-effective approach that significantly reduced energy consumption.

DRIVING SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES IN AFRICA BEworks worked with the World Cocoa Foundation to identify the physical and psychological barriers preventing farmers from adopting innovative, sustainable farming practices and developed a behavior change strategy to help drive the desired outcomes. This strategy is now being integrated into their broader sustainability initiatives in South America and Africa.

SAUDI ARABIA NATIONAL URBAN DESIGN GUIDELINES Gehl developed the first National Urban Design Guidelines for Saudi Arabia.

Through a collaborative process with the National Urban Design Studio, we developed a vision for a people-first urban transformation.

The guidelines focus on the neighborhood and street level, providing a set of guiding principles, strategies, and actions to create livable and resilient places. Applying the guidelines, we are now developing neighborhood strategies and street design for cities in Saudi Arabia.

DESIGNING THE WHOLE PACKAGE FOR H&M H&M, one of the largest apparel manufacturers in the world, wanted to grow more sustainably.

One of its goals: eliminate plastic from its packaging. Together we developed a new paper packaging system that’s cutting thousands of tons of plastic from H&M’s operations, helping the company and its customers meet their sustainability goals.

RESTORING THE EARTH WITH CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL IDEO helped Conservation International scale a promising approach to restoring African rangelands, critical for carbon sequestration and biodiversity. REACH FOR THE REUSABLE Lexington has long supported BRITA in its mission to educate consumers on the impact of single-use bottled water on climate and marine wildlife. We could live in a world where nations translate the presence of significant carbon sinks within their borders into significant political leverage. This could happen as such nations nationalize their carbon markets, and as the global community urges them to refrain from release. Power dynamics, in the form of reparations and financial negotiations, will continue. Extreme actors might even seek to hold an increasingly desperate world at ransom.

We’re already seeing the first appointments of nature to corporate boards of directors, and the inclusion of its needs in decision-making. This could be accelerated by advances in applied AI as researchers work towards effective communication with other species. Longterm, multigenerational thinking is coming into focus, too, evidenced by the increasing presence of youth at gatherings such as COP.

Navigating this future will require Shaping Beliefs & Policy to create financial mechanisms that enable equitable compensation. It will also require Gathering to Change Mindsets to create alignment among diverse participants in new and complex markets.

What if grid infrastructure were a source of national pride as much as energy?

We could arrive in a future where the features of everyday life are designed not only for human preferences but for those of non-humans too, such as the solitary pollinating bees likely to survive fastdisappearing honey bees. (It might not always be comfortable for us; we can adapt.)

This could happen as efforts grow to protect and preserve dwindling keystone species, and as work develops to re-wild urban environments into species corridors.

This future requires Innovating Systems and Products to redesign everyday human objects for the benefit of nonhumans. And it requires Designing Spaces & Environments to retrofit what currently exists into re-wilded public spaces.

We might see a future where shifts in culture and investment have elevated the grid to the status of beloved public works.

It could come as ”not in my back yard” arguments are overtaken by progress in policy and technology, and as national support for expanding the electrified renewable grid builds momentum.

The Loom

by A+OT “The desert has everything.”

– Ibrahim Al Koni There is a narrow and fertile strip of land on the northeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, no more than 20 to 30 kilometers wide and 280 kilometers long.i This “continuous fertile strip of garden: palms, fig trees, mangoes, mulberry trees, and pomegranates”ii is nestled between Al Hajar Mountains, an impenetrable mountain range of striking red, muted yellow, and dark brown hues that is dotted with its fair share of green to the west, and the blue waters of the Gulf of Oman to the east.

It is from the historical and ongoing abundance of Al Hajar’s landscape in specific, and arid landscapes, that The Loom is born. Conceived as a creative interpretation of the kyu House commitment to creativity being to be woven into climate action, The Loom is a confluence of discarded elements designed to challenge conceptions of arid environments as spaces of scarcity and precarity.

Specifically, locally sourced and scavenged khoos (palm-leaf) are assembled into a series of spacecreating volumes, resulting in an open and limitless material system that blurs part-to-whole relationships in favor of ambiguous material hierarchies.

Exhibited within the space is a range of applications, from a suspended cloud, made of self-structuring khoos and showing varying degrees of porosity, along with a free standing wall made out of palm twigs proposing alternative models of material stacking.

The Loom is part of a larger body of work titled Other Environmentalisms, a research agenda that activates South-West Asian and North African (SWANA) environmental practices to drive innovative contemporary building solutions. In this broader work, we explore context-driven modes of production, alternative material systems, and the relationship between environmental and architectural imaginaries.
