Color as adjective

색채를 만드는 데 있어 일반적인 접근방식인-물리학적, 화학적, 심리학 적, 생리학적, 미학적 접근법을 따로 나누어 생각할 수 없겠지만, 총체 적 접근방식으로서의 주관적 접근으로 색채를 조색하고, 언어로서의 형 용사적 의미를 수립하여 적용, 마지막으로 직관적인 감각에 의해 색채 팔레트를 만들었다.

The general methods of making colors - physical, chemical, psychological, physiological, and aesthetic approaches cannot be thought of being practiced individually. I make color palettes with an intuitive sense, after mixing colors through a subjective approach as a comprehensive way of applying an adjective meaning to them.

지시받는 사물이나 존재, 명사는 배제하고 감정이나 심리상태를 나타내 는 형용사를 의식의 흐름에 따라 기록한다. 그리고 잊혀지거나 소멸한 감정이나 심리상태는 제거한다. 몇 개의 단어를 시작으로 감정을 색채 로 치환하기 위해 보드 위에 색채를 맞춰보면서 빠르게는 이삼일, 혹은 몇 주씩 걸려 조색하고, 기록하고, 선택한다. 색감정이 의식과 무의식 사이를 끊임없이 왕복한다. 드로잉은 매 순간 변화하는 그것을 1/4시간 단위로 기록한다. 서로 다른 드로잉 또는 한 드로잉에서 같은 시간인 것 은 며칠, 혹은 몇 주의 차이가 있는 시간이다. 어제 선택한 색이 오늘은 다르게 느껴질 수 있고 감정과 심리의 농도에 따라 색채도 변화하지만, 여러 날에 걸쳐 혼색된 색은 형용사적 개념으로서의 색채로 명명될 때까 지 변화를 거듭한다. 보드 위에 기록된 색채의 덩어리들은 각각의 고유 한 색 언어를 표현함과 동시에 하나의 단어로 표현된 감정들이 한 사람 의 개인에게서조차 얼마나 다양한 색채로 표현될 수 있는지를 보여준다. 선택된 색채는 캔버스 위에 양각으로 보이는 형용사 문자와 함께 단색으 로 처리했다. 두께가 보일 듯 말 듯한 정도의 양각으로 레이저 컷팅된 문 자를 색채가 완벽히 칠해진 캔버스 위에 접착한 후 다시 덮일 만큼의 물 감을 반복해서 칠한다. 완전히 건조한 후 떼어내면 양각으로 형성된 문 자가 얇은 그림자에 의해 구분되는 형용사이다. 완전히 제거된 이미지 자리에 속삭이듯 형용사 단어인 텍스트가 자리를 대신한다.

Excluding referents, beings, things, and nouns, I document adjectives referring to emotional, psychological states according to the flow of consciousness. I also get rid of forgotten emotions and psychological states. I mix, record, and choose colors in two or three days or a few weeks, comparing colors on the board to emotions, anchored on a few words. Color emotions move between the conscious and unconscious. I document ever-changing color emotions every 15 minutes in an hour. The color I chose yesterday might feel different today, and the colors change depending on the concentration of feeling and psychology, but the colors mixed in a few days constantly change until they are named the colors of adjective concept. The masses of colors on the board show how feelings represented by words can be expressed in diverse colors, in each indigenous color-language.

Chosen colors are applied in monochrome alongside the characters of an adjective that seem to be embossed on the canvas.

Laser-cut characters whose thickness is hardly sensed are glued onto a canvas completely applied with paint, and then paints are used to cover them repetitively. Detached after being completely dried, the characters appear with thin shadows, distinguished from them. As if whispering, adjectives replace the place from which images are removed.

두세 개의 형용사적 색채로 구성된 큰 그림은 넓은 단면의 감정색에서 다른 감정 색으로 넘어가는 과정 속에 또 다른 색채의 밀도로 구성, 색감정의 충돌과 긴장 을 형성한다. 하나의 감정에서 또 다른 감정으로의 전이는 한 순간에서조차 빠르 고 긴밀하며, 혹은 일순간에도 몇 개의 감정들이 공존하는 그 긴장을 표현한다.

Large painting The large painting composed of two or three ‘adjective colors’ arouses collisionand tension between color emotions and the density of another color in aprocess of being converted from emotional color with a broad field, to another emotional color. In the large painting the conversion from some emotion to other emotion is quickly and closely made, bringing forth tension aroused when several feelings coexist in a moment.

10 Moments of Confidence

색을 만들 때, 명확하게 이것이다!라는 순간이 올 때까지 계속 다른 색을 추 가하며 섞어 만든다. 어느 순간, 그것은 원하던 혹은 기억하던 그 감정색으로 나타난다. 그것은 한 순간이고 그 순간을 놓치지 않기 위해 붓대의 끝에 물감 을 뭍혀 종이 위에 찍어낸다. 마치 공기 중에 떠도는 확신을 잡아챈 듯 종이 위에 남겨진 흔적은 지속 불가능한 그 일 순간의 표현이다.

I continue to add and mix colors until the right (!)color is created.

There is one moment when the color emotion that I wanted or remembered appears in front of me. To capture that one moment, I dip my brushin the paint and paint it over a piece of paper. It is like capturing moments of confidence on a piece of paper.

My Love, my Seni

사랑했던 강아지, 세니가 떠난지 18개월이 지났다. 아버지의 죽음을 독일에서 일주일 후에 접한 나는 죽음, 비존재가 된다는 것이 어떤 것인지 상상할 수 없 었다. 10살이 다 될 때까지 함께 동고동락하던 강아지의 죽음은 그럼에도 시간 이 지나면서 망각 속으로 조금씩 흘러갔다. 붙잡고 싶은 기억들, 잊고 싶지 않 은 상황들을 끊임없이 되뇌이며 망각과 씨름하고 있다. 이 작업은 시간이 지날 수록 망각될 수 밖에 없는 자연과 그렇게 잊혀지는 것들을 붙잡고 싶어하는 나 의 욕망의 산물이다.

It has been 18 months since my dog Seni passed away. I couldn’t imagine what death or what being non-existent would be like until myfather’s death. My father died while I was in Germany and I learned of his passing a week after. Yet, the death of my dog, who lived with me until I was10 years old, is gradually disappearing into oblivion as time passes by. I continue to struggle with oblivion by reminding myself of the memories and moments I want to keep. This work is the fruit of my desire to hold on to nature and moments that fade away with time.

형용사로서의 색채: 어두운-설레는 공간 설치, 2013 어둡고 설레는 감정이 교차할 때 섬광처럼 스치는 또 다른 다양한 감정이 공존한다. 명명되는 하나 의 감정은 단 하나만으로 이루어지지 않는다. 공 간 전체를 아우르는 작업으로, 여러 색들이 어두 운 공간 속에 부유하듯이 자리 잡는다. 색채와 언 어로서의 형용사는 의식과 무의식의 교차 지점에 서 색과 색의 충돌로 혹은 색의 소멸로 인식된다.

Color as Adjective: Dark- Exciting Space Installation, 2013 When a person feels both dark and exciting there is another set of mixed emotions that flashes by, since a single emotion cannot be felt alone apart from other emotions. This work, which dominates the entire space, presents a variety of colors that seems as if they are floating in the dark. Adjectives that are on the edge of consciousness are represented by clashes between colors or the dissipation of colors.

검은 침묵

Black silence

말이 되어 표현되지 않는 감정이 있다. 입속에서 맴도는 단어들이 공허 하고 부질없다고 느낄 땐 차라리 침묵을 택하는 편이 낫다. 하지만 침묵 속에는 수많은 단어와 말들이 서로 뒤엉켜 있고 우주의 심연처럼 찬란한 별빛 같은 단어들이 빛을 발하며 기다리고 있다. 말이 되어 나오지 않는 침묵은 끊임없는 질문과 혼자만의 대화로 가득 차 있다. 완전한 침묵은 꿈일 뿐 결코 고요하지 않다.

Some feelings cannot be expressed with words. When I feel words that are not uttered are vacant and futile, I might as well remain silent. In silence however, numerous words and conversations are intermingled, and words that are as brilliant as starlight radiate light, as in an abyss in the universe. Silence, a state where no words are uttered is filled with constant questions and monologs. A perfect silence is nothing but a dream, and is never calm.

형용사로서의 색채-그곳에서 그녀는 홍조 띤 얼굴로 말했다. 창원은 참 살기 좋은 곳이라 고. 앞으로 더 좋아질 거라고. 마침 때 이른 봄, 따뜻한 바닷바 람이 불어 와 그녀의 밝은 갈색으로 물들인 긴 머리칼을 멋스 럽게 흩날린다. 나는 “좋은”이라는 형용사를 사운드 채집하 고, 그녀에게서 받은 인상을 엷은 오렌지빛이 도는 밝은 갈색 으로 정한다. 불투명 연질PVC 위에 아크릴 물감으로 음각한 단어들은 이틀 동안 창원에서 만나 인터뷰한 사람들의 경험과 기억, 바램을 깊 게 새기고 있다. 미풍에 흔들리듯 떠 있는 언어들의 색채 사이를 창원 앞바다에서 수집한 파도소리, 바람소리와 함께 그들의 분 절된 단어들이 뒤섞여 들린다. 한 쪽 끝이 기둥에 고정된 종이의 앞면은 햇살을 받은 봄바다빛 이고 뒷면은 무학산 학봉 산역의 진달래빛이다. 10미터의 종이 는 마치 진해만의 물길처럼 끝없이 이어져 바늘구멍이 나 있고, 끝은 굴곡진 해변가만큼이나 불규칙적으로 뜯어져 섬처럼 바닥 에 떨어져 있다. 오래된 미래도시 창원에 봄바람이 분다.

Color as Adjective - There Her face turned red as she spoke. She said that Changwon is a nice place to live and that things will get better.

Spring has arrived earlier than expected. The warm spring breeze blow through her light brown hair. I collected the sound of the adjective ‘nice’ and decided to paint the impression i got from her as a light brown with a slight hit of orange.

The words, which I engraved on a transparent acrylic panel with acrylic paint, represent the experiences, memories and wishes of the people I have interviewed in Changwon.

Through the fluttering and colorful words, people can hear the segmented words from the interviews alongside the sounds of the waves and wind, which I recorded off the coast of Changwon.

The color of the front of the paper, which is hung from the middle of the wall, resembles azaleas that can be found on the top of Mt. Muhak. The back of the paper is the color of the spring sea sparkling in the sunlight. This paper is 10 meters long and is endlessly pierced like the waves of the Jinhea Bay, whereas the end of the paper is shredded in an irregular pattern like an indented coastline and the torn pieces lie on the floor like islands.

The spring breeze is blowing in the futuristic city of the past, Changwon.

작가노트 서울과 브라운슈바익(Braunschweig), 두 문화 예술의 다른 공간 에서 교육받은 나의 작품은 형식과 내용 면에서 환경과 상호작용하 는 접근방식을 보여준다. 독일 유학시 꾸준히 “물(Water)”이라는 소재를 통해 새로운 장소에 대한 기대와 불안의 감정을 표현했다면, 귀국 이후 서울에서의 삶의 변화는 또 다른 장소의 이동과 함께 새로 운 작업에 대한 질문을 스스로에게 제시, 실험해 나가는 과정으로서 매우 개인적이고 추상적인 언어로 표현하고 있다. 주변의 자연환경 뿐만 아니라 미디어를 통해 현실을 관찰하고, 현실에서의 나의 경 험, 기억을 결합한다. 직접 찍은 사진 이미지, 혹은 미디어나 SNS 를 통해 추출된 이미지를 기억, 저장한 후 여러 개의 이미지들을 하 나의 화면 위에서 고찰하고, 수평적 레이어로 추상화하는 작업을 진 행해 왔다. 자연은 나에게 다양한 색의 스펙트럼으로 보였고 끊임없 는 변화는 무궁한 색채를 선사했다. 하지만 지난 2011년 가을, 소중한 존재의 죽음을 겪고 난 후 나는 말을 잃었다. 침묵했다. 언어화되지 못한 말들이 의식 속에서 부유했다. 그리고 색을 느끼지 못했다. 일시적이며 순간적으로 사라지고 잊혀지는 감정들이 빠르 게 드나들었다. 다시 붓을 들기까지 몇 개월의 시간이 필요했고 시 점은 내면을 향하고 있었다. 현재, 예기치 못한 일상의 단절에서 느꼈던 그 감정들을 시각화할 수 있는 가능성에 주목하고 15분 단위의 시간과 색감정을 연결해 감 정을 색채화하는 일련의 조색(mixing colors) 과정을 연작으로 표 현한 ‘형용사로서의 색채’와 그것을 단서로 한 ‘큰 그림’을 작 업하고 있다. 전시되는 그림에 명사적 색채는 없다. 마치 색으로 이 야기하듯, 완성되지 않은 독백과도 같은 이 그림들은 어떤 사물이 나 존재를 지시하지 않는, 순수한 감성 자체를 드러내는 형용사로 서의 색채로 관람객에 의해 완성되어 속삭이듯 조용한 대화를 시 도할 것이다. 환경과 상호작용하는 개인으로서 지금까지의 작업보 다 더욱 심화된 감성과 그것을 분석적으로 표현한 이 작업들로 끝 내 서로 만나지 못하는 평행선들의 절망적인 고독을 넘어서기를 나 는 기대한다.

Artist Statement I was educated in two different places, Seoul and Braunschweig. My work thus shows approaches to interacting with these environments in terms of form and content. I represented my expectations and anxiety to a new place with the theme of ‘water’ during my study in Germany.

But, after coming back to Seoul, changes in life in Seoul and leaving a place to other place made me pose new questions concerning my work. I am now developing a very personal, abstract language as a process of experimenting with these questions. Observing not only the surrounding natural environments but also reality through the media, I seek a conflation of my experience and memory with them. After memorizing or saving photographic images I took myself or images I extracted from the media or SNS, I have worked on decontextualizing and abstracting them on horizontal layers. Nature is visible for me as a wide spectrum of colors, and infinite colors are brought about by constant change.

In the fall of 2011 however, I lost my words after the death of a loved one. I kept silent. Words that had not been uttered floated in my mind, and I was not able to feel color.

Temporary fleeting emotions came in and out quickly. I needed a few months to resume my work, and my perspective was of my inward world.

Taking notice of the possibility of visualizing emotions in my unexpected severance with daily life, I created a process of mixing colors to represent emotions in colors by associating 15-minute units of time with emotion. With this I work on ‘large painting’ based on ‘colors as the adjective’. No colors as nouns are presented in such paintings. As if speaking in the language of color, the paintings like uncompleted monologs are colors as adjectives revealing pure sensibility itself, rather than referring to any thing or being. Completed by viewers, the colors seem to attempt a calm dialog. I hoped with these paintings, analytically representing more profound emotions than my previous work reacting to the environment, I could overcome the desperate solitude of horizons that can never meet each other.
