Hello! I am Kyle Fuchs I am a 5th year architecture student at The Pennsylvania State University. I enjoy spending time in the sun and taking part in a purpose. Description: Design a sustainable library for Philadelphia’s Delaware riverfront on Pier 25.

The building form is a directional gesture; serving as the connecting moment for the city and a communal greenspace.

Water runoff is mitigated through the use of rain gardens and an extensive green roof.

Accessibility and climate longevity considerations intertwine to allow users ramped access to a safe, recreational green space at the end of the pier. The first floor and green space are above the 100 year flood plane.

Glazed areas of the building facing south are equipped with an operable horizontal shading system that is automatically controlled by the library’s computerized energy system.

Section details reveal the steel and laminated timber hybrid construction, green roof, and sufficient insulation as a priority.

Daylighting Analysis Spatial Daylight Autonomy Mapping

The Southern facade’s reclaimed wood cladding pairs with the piers’ naturally weathered, corrugated steel.

The glazing is protected by an automated horizontal shading system. Glare and overheating is mitigated, and the indoor climate is in-part maintained by the automatic adjustment of the exterior shading devices.

LEED Standards specify a spatial daylight autonomy of 300 lux for 50% of the floor area during occupied hours. Conducted analysis shows an overall passing score.

The curved runs of the building direct occupants through the building and around the atrium spaces. Located within are the classrooms, faculty studios, student lounges, and practice rooms on the southern run, and larger practice halls on the northern run.

The atrium functions to allow light through to the fluid circulation spaces and fresh air when weather is fair. The basement level opens up to a green courtyard area on the southern facade, which invites light and the indoor-outdoor flow of the occupants.

Choral Room

The Choral Music Practice Room is designated for rehearsals. This project required elaborate research into materials and their acoustical properties.

Interior Atrium

The center atrium space facilitates movement throughout the building.

Students are connected to each of the program spaces by the unique and open center stairway.

Framing Strategy The building’s structural system follows the same strategy as the program organization.

The structure is broken up into three main steel frames, each capable of standing alone, yet tied together with the center circulation space.

Friesenhahn Cave Research Lab

Project Length: 7 weeks Professor: Brian Peterka Solo Project 6,000 sqft

Description: Design a research facility for paleontologists to document an open cave site dating back to the Ice Age.

The architecture embodies the contrast of time found on the site - Ice age old fossils found below a modern housing development. Laboratory spaces are sunken into the earth, where the indoor climate is consitent and protected. Spaces for the occupants and researches are located above, which also include a bunk room.

A 1/16th inch section model displays the program layout. The outdoor space connected to the basement level is intended for educational use, as well as an artifact cleaning space.

The butterfly roof lends itself to the idea of a light, “floating” structure situated upon a massive, heavy base.

This is inspired by the cave entrance itself.

Globetrotter Portable Habitat Simple assembly. Simple Living.

Project Length: 4 weeks Professor: Marcus Shaffer Solo Project 225 sqft

Description: Design a kit of parts for an offgrid portable habitat that can be assembled by one person.

3’ The base is broken into six segments of two pieces: a sub-frame and a floor plate.

The aluminum frame makes for an easy, light assembly.

Shelving units fit the circumference of the habitat and can be moved freely.

The center framing holds a shower, sink, and water basin above. This utility core feeds greywater into a collection basin attached to the floor framing below.

Sleeping pods are hung on the outerframe and are connected to the habitat through the smaller window ports.

Wall panels fit securely into the framing with rubber gaskets and panel locks. Nuts and bolts hold the aluminum framing together and are accessible after wall panels are released and pushed out of the frame.
