A cafe for the 21st century inspired by filmic media captured surrounding the immediate site.
Location: River Heart Parklands, Ipswich

THIS PROJECT ADOPTED A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO URBAN PLANNING WHEREBY THE SELECTED SITE WAS ANALYSED VIA VISUAL MEDIA TO PRODUCE A SHORT FILM WHICH WOULD INFORM DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO CONCEIVE A RESPONSIVE URBAN PROPOSAL.

RELATIONSHIP SYMMETRY
PERSPECTIVE PROJECTIONS RHYTHM

THE SELECTED FILM STILLS IDENTIFIED BELOW INDICATE THE SITES DEPENDENCY ON LIGHT AND SHADOWS, AND THESE ATTRIBUTES ABILITY TO INTERACT WITH THE MAIN WATER BODY TRANSECTING THE URBAN FABRIC.



TO TRANSPOSE ELEMENTS OF LIGHT AND SHADOW INTO THE URBAN DESIGN, THE BUILT FORM WAS ORIENTATED TO THE RIVERS EDGE TO ENABLE PROJECTIONS OF LIGHT TO BE CAST UPON OVERHANGING SURFACES. THE MAIN ENVELOPE WAS ALSO SPLIT BY A MEANDERING BOARDWALK, MIMICING THE WIDER SITE CONDITIONS. ALSO, THE SYMMETRICAL PROPERTIES MIMIC THE PREDICTABILITY FOUND WITHIN RIPPLES ALLOWING USERS TO FIND RETREAT FROM THE CITY HUSTLE.

A museum designed for the 21st century to cater for filmic media in an immersive environment.
Location: King Edward Parade, Ipswich, QLD

THE FORM AIMS TO BRIDGE THE URBAN FABRIC WHICH HAS BEEN TRANSECTED BY THE RIVER, ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AND RAIL LINE, CREATING A HARMONIOUS URBAN PLATFORM.


TO BEGIN IDEATION, A PSYCHOGEOGRAPHIC STUDY WAS CONDUCTED WHEREBY A USERS EXPERIENCE OF PLACE IS ANALYSED ACCORDING TO THEIR PSYCHOLOGICAL EMOTIONS. THIS STUDY YIELDED AN INHERENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SITE, AND PROPERTIES ASSOCIATED WITH LIGHT AND DARK WHICH EVOLVE, AND MOVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY .
THE ANALYSIS HIGHLIGHTED CONTEXTUAL PROPERTIES UNIQUE TO THE SITE, REGARDING STREAMS OF DAPPLED LIGHT PENETRATING THE FOLIAGE CANOPY





TO TRANSLATE THIS PROPERTY TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, A FABRIC FACADE SOUGHT TO MIMIC THE PROJECTIONS AND SHADOWS OF LIGHT.

Aligned to paradigm shifts shaping inner-city living, design an 8-storey multi-residential proposal.

The Concept:
THIS PROPOSAL WILL SEEK TO OFFER OCCUPANTS A PLACE FOR REGENERATIVE, PERSONAL GROWTH TO IMPROVE THE MENTAL WELLBEING OF ALL THOSE WHO INTERACT WITH THE SPACES. OFTEN ATTRIBUTED TO INNER-CITY LIVING, BOWEN HILLS IS SUFFERING FROM A SEVERE INCREASE IN RECOGNISED MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS, AS A RESULT, RESEARCH INDICATES PROVISIONS OF NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION PROMOTE OCCUPANTS WELL-BEING.
THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO INTEGRATE AND TRANSPOSE THE TRADITIONAL SENSE OF A COMMUNITY INTO URBAN APARTMENT LIVING, HENCE; COMMUNITY 2 . THIS APPROACH THUS AIMS TO CHAMPION THE MENTAL WELLBEING OF OCCUPANTS TO ALLEVIATE STRESS AND CURATE INTERPERSONAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN INHABITANTS ACCORDING TO THE BCC INCLUSIVE PLAN.

Express a typology for offices and retail offerings of the future through a mixed-use precinct.

The Concept:
THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO OFFER THE COMMUNITY OF BOWEN HILLS A REGENERATIVE HUB TO CULTIVATE A SENSE OF PLACE LOST DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THROUGH RE-INCARNATING THE SOCIAL PIAZZA TYPOLOGY TO FOSTER INTERPERSONAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN A RETAIL CAPACITY, AND WORKING PROFESSIONALS.





THE PIAZZA IS NOT JUST AN ARCHITECTURAL SPACE THAT SHAPES COMMUNITIES, IT IS AN URBAN LIVING ROOM, AN EXPRESSION OF SOCIETIES IDENTITY, WHERE THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE INTERACT.
THE ROMAN COLOSSEUM’S ONLY FACADE STILL STANDING TODAY IS ORIENTED TO SOUTH; THE LEAST EXPOSED TO SOLAR RADIATION, HENCE, INFORMING A CARVED, TIERED BUILT FORM RESPONSE.


SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES

THE SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES IDENTIFIED PROVIDE AN INNOVATIVE RESPONSE TO SOLAR RADIATION THROUGH AUTOMATED AND ADAPTIVE FACADES WHICH HARVEST SOLAR ENERGY IN BATTERIES. WHILST COLLECTING RAINWATER



WORKFORCE IS WIRED FOR SOCIAL CONNECTION; THUS, WORKPLACES MUST ENABLE COLLABORATION AND CONNECTION. THIS STARTS THROUGH ADOPTING A “WHOLE OF SYSTEM APPROACH” WHICH CURATES’ INTERACTIONS THROUGH JOURNEY-BASED DESIGN TO ENABLE RELATIONSHIPS TO BE CULTIVATED, SOCIAL NETWORKS TO GROW, AND INDIVIDUALS TO FLOURISH (LUND ET AL., 2021; McCARTHY, 2021).
EXPOSED GLAZING TO BE DOUBLE LOW-E SPECIFICATION TO MODERATE SOLAR HEAT GAIN.







THE COMMON BREEZEWAY THROUGH THE CENTRAL CORE ENABLES CROSS VENTILATION TO PENETRATE WORKING SPACES IN ALIGNMENT TO A “PREMIUM” PCA OFFICE GRADING ACCORDING TO BRISBANE CBD REQUIREMENTS.


THE PROPOSAL OFFERS A TIERED EFFECT DESIGNED TO MAXIMISE DESIRABLE SOLAR INGRESS AND INCREASE OCCUPANTS ACCESS TO NATURAL VENTILATION.
