THERE’S STILL TIME TO REVOLUTIONIZE HR WITH
It’s been two years since generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) burst onto the scene and became a part of everyday conversation, as well as a strategic imperative for organizations and HR functions. Despite the potential of GenAI—or AI in general—to transform HR, however, the level of understanding and implementation among industry leaders remains relatively low. It might seem impossible to start scaling the mountain that is AI if you’re not already well versed in the technology, but the truth is that it’s never too late to begin.
AI UNDERSTANDING AND OVERALL ADOPTION REMAINS LOW
Although AI comprehension and experience increased slightly between January 2024 and August 2024, according to SHRM research, the majority of HR leaders still lack extensive knowledge of this transformative technology. In fact, more than one-third (38%) admitted to having limited or no theoretical understanding of AI, and 58% reported possessing only a basic grasp of its fundamentals. This lack of understanding means that the time needed to learn and experiment with AI technology isn’t happening.
At the organizational level, the adoption of AI in HR has seen marginal growth over the last year. More than 1 in 4 HR leaders (28%) said their organization has implemented GenAI, the most commonly adopted type of AI, but only 14% have implemented enhancement AI, which refines and improves existing content or data. Use of optimization AI (designed to improve efficiency) and predictive AI (designed to forecast future trends) is even less common, with implementation rates of 11% and 10%, respectively. Surprisingly, more than 1 in 3 HR leaders reported that their organization hasn’t implemented any type of AI and hs no plans to do so.
Challenges of AI Implementation
Folding AI into HR is not without its obstacles. Among HR leaders who work for
organizations that have implemented AI, only 2% reported that they didn’t face any challenges when doing so. For the other 98%, the most significant hurdles included:
• Lack of resources to support it (cited by 40% of respondents).
• Compliance with data protection laws (28%).
• Ethical concerns about AI use (26%).
• Risks of biases in AI decision-making (24%).
However, these obstacles aren’t insurmountable—and, moreover, it’s often worth the effort to unlock AI’s potential.
PUTTING AI INTO PRACTICE
To effectively integrate AI into HR practices, organizations must be willing to jump in and try something new (with appropriate guardrails, of course).
Key recommendations for getting started on an AI implementation journey include:
1. Boost Your AI Know-How
HR professionals who are driving the implementation of AI tools should take measures to better understand available AI technology and how to use it effectively. Organizations should allocate resources toward comprehensive training programs and workshops that focus on AI fundamentals and their practical application within the context of HR-specific tasks.
OF AI
96% of HR leaders report having a basic, limited, or no theoretical understanding of AI.
80% of U.S. workers classify their understanding of AI as beginner or intermediate.
20% of U.S. workers classify their understand of AI as advanced or expert.
Source: August Voice of Work Pulse Survey, SHRM, 2024.
TOP 10 CHALLENGES OF AI IMPLEMENTATION
HR leaders who work for organizations that have implemented AI say that the biggest challenges they have faced, are facing, or anticipate facing are:
Lack of resources to support it (e.g., time, money, staff)
Compliance with data protection laws (e.g., HIPPA)
SHRM offers a variety of valuable educational resources through The AI+HI Project, including a downloadable playbook, timely articles, a weekly podcast and newsletter, andx the SHRM AI+HI Specialty Credential.
The future of HR is AI-powered, and the time to act is now.
2. Foster Innovation
As the person or team spearheading AI initiatives, aim to develop a forward-thinking culture by allowing teams to spend time during the workday experimenting with AI projects. Pilot initiatives can yield valuable data, showcase the potential benefits of AI solutions, and uncover innovative strategies for leveraging AI tools to improve workflows. Group experimentation sessions or departmentwide hackathons—hourslong or dayslong events common in the computer programming industry in which a group of employees collectively develop new approaches to solving problems—can determine helpful applications of AI tools in a given department. Ultimately, you should create an environment that supports innovation and calculated risk-taking to really explore AI’s capabilities.
Uncertainty of where to implement it
3. Collaborate with Others
Establish partnerships with internal teams that are already leveraging AI in their workflows, because these collaborations not only help build technological expertise but also create a better understanding of other complex issues surrounding AI, such as legal and ethical concerns. Additionally, consider external partnerships with vendors, academic institutions, and membership associations that can bridge internal knowledge gaps and accelerate AI adoption, potentially overcoming some of the biggest AI implementation challenges.
THE FUTURE OF AI IN HR
AI in HR is an evolving landscape with ever-changing tools, practices, and implications. It’s crucial to recognize that it’s never too late to start down your own path of AI knowledge and utilization. By addressing existing challenges and investing in the necessary resources, organizations can unlock AI’s potential to revolutionize HR functions. The future of HR is AI-powered, and the time to act is now.

BUILDING A STRONGER WORKFORCE IN KENTUCKY: SPOTLIGHT ON THE KENTUCKY CHAMBER FOUNDATION’S
Hiring Academies
The workplace landscape is evolving, and with it comes a growing need for innovative strategies to attract, develop, and retain talent. In Kentucky, the Kentucky Chamber Foundation is leading the charge in workforce development by offering a suite of hiring academies designed to bridge the talent gap. These programs give employers the tools and insights to build a skilled workforce that drives success and strengthens communities.
THE POWER OF IDENTIFYING TALENT PIPELINES
In 2025, with support from the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management, the Kentucky Chamber Foundation is expanding its hiring academy offerings to meet the demands of a rapidly changing labor market. These academies are tailored to empower employers across the Commonwealth to embrace new strategies to find talent. With four academies scheduled throughout the year, the Foundation’s efforts focus on equipping businesses with actionable strategies to attract and retain talent from opportunity populations. The 2025 lineup includes:
1. Disability Hiring Academy
This newly launched academy, presented by the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute, trains employers to hire and retain skilled individuals with diverse abilities. From understanding the benefits of disability inclusion to navigating workplace accommodations, participants will leave with practical tools to foster an environment where all employees can thrive.
2. Fair Chance Hiring Academy
Designed to support individuals in recovery and those who are justice-involved, the Fair Chance Academy equips employers with tools to give qualified candidates a second chance. By fostering fair hiring practices, businesses can access a dedicated and loyal workforce while positively impacting their communities.
3. Military Hiring Academy
This academy focuses on recruiting and retaining veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses, providing employers with a highly skilled and disciplined talent pool. Participants will learn best practices for supporting military-connected employees and creating a workplace culture that honors their unique experiences.
4. New Kentuckian Hiring Academy
Also new in 2025, this academy focuses on supporting employers in recruiting and hiring documented immigrants working legally in Kentucky. It will equip employers with resources, strategies, and access to qualified talent to meet business needs, drive innovation, and enhance competitiveness.
KENTUCKY CHAMBER FOUNDATION’S APPROACH TO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Each academy addresses specific challenges and opportunities in today’s workforce. Participants will engage in expert-led training sessions and actionable strategies to refine their hiring practices. Beyond theory, these academies emphasize real-world application, ensuring employers are equipped to implement meaningful change.
WHY HR PROFESSIONALS SHOULD PRIORITIZE THESE ACADEMIES
For human resources professionals, the Kentucky Chamber Foundation’s hiring academies represent an unparalleled opportunity to gain expertise in workforce

development. Attending these academies can help HR leaders position their organizations as employers of choice in an increasingly competitive labor market. Here’s why you should consider enrolling:
1. Access Untapped Talent Pools: Each academy focuses on a specific demographic, offering insights into recruiting and retaining candidates with unique perspectives and skills. Attendees will also learn how to access these talent pools directly.
2. Compliance and Best Practices: From understanding how to implement adapted policies, participants comprehensively realize what it takes to build and retain a broad workplace.
3. Community Impact: Hiring from opportunity populations strengthens businesses and uplifts communities.
4. Networking Opportunities: Connect with other HR professionals and industry leaders who are equally committed to workforce innovation and share best practices, challenges, and solutions to build a robust support network.
LOOKING AHEAD: THE FUTURE OF WORKPLACES IN KENTUCKY
The Kentucky Chamber Foundation’s hiring academies are more than just training programs—they are catalysts for change. By equipping employers with the knowledge
and tools to cast a wider workforce net, these academies are helping to reshape the Commonwealth.
In 2025 and beyond, HR professionals have a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of this movement. By participating in these academies, you can play a pivotal role in transforming your organization and making Kentucky the best place to live, work, and do business.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Mark your calendars and secure your spot in one or more of these transformative academies. Whether you want to expand your organization’s reach, enhance your talent pipeline, or make a meaningful impact, the Kentucky Chamber Foundation’s hiring academies are your gateway to success.

A Game Changer for Kentucky Businesses
THE DAILY STRUGGLE OF WORKING PARENTS
You hold your breath, hoping that the raspy cough thundered through the baby monitor was just part of your dream—until the next cough, louder this time, followed by a cry. Instantly, your mind races, juggling concerns like a seasoned multitasker:
• Do I even have enough PTO to take them to the doctor?
• How will I stay home without PTO if there is a fever?
• I can’t lose my job, but is the money I make even worth what we pay for daycare?
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (2021), 56% of Kentucky’s workforce comprises parents, and 38% of these parents have young children. This means a significant portion of Kentucky’s workforce constantly balances professional responsibilities with the challenges of securing reliable childcare.
THE CHILDCARE CHALLENGE IN KENTUCKY
For many working parents, securing high-quality, affordable childcare is daunting. The lack of accessible childcare options often forces parents, especially mothers, to reduce work hours or leave the workforce entirely.
This results in talent shortages, decreased productivity, absenteeism, and increased turnover costs for employers, often leading to gender inequality in the workplace. With workforce participation rates lagging and economic growth on the line, Kentucky businesses must take proactive steps to address this issue.
Kentucky businesses are always looking for innovative ways to strengthen their workforce, build their employer brand, boost productivity, and retain top talent. One of the most impactful yet underutilized strategies is s upporting employees with childcare assistance. Of the 2025 BPTW-winning companies, 45% stated that affordable and dependable childcare options impact their ability to attract and hire new workers.
Programs like the Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership allow businesses to invest in their employees and, in turn, create a more robust and engaged workforce. However, the ECCAP is just one of many options for employers looking to support working parents.
CHILDCARE SUPPORT OPTIONS FOR EMPLOYERS
Businesses that prioritize childcare assistance make a tangible difference in their employees’ lives. Among the companies recognized on the 2025 Best Places to Work in
Kentucky list, childcare benefits vary significantly—some are widely adopted, others are surprisingly rare.
• Kentucky’s Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership: Despite its potential to ease financial burdens, only five companies on the 2025 list participate in this cost-sharing program with the state.
• Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (DCFSAs): A more popular option, 52% of recognized companies offer FSAs, allowing employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for childcare expenses.
• Childcare Stipends: Direct financial support for childcare is a game-changer, yet only three companies on the list provide this benefit.
• Help Finding Childcare: 15 companies offer resources to help employees locate quality childcare, a relatively underutilized but valuable support tool.
• On-Site Childcare: In striking contrast, just two companies on the list provide on-site childcare, highlighting the challenge of implementing this high-impact solution.
• Reserved Childcare Slots: Not a single company on the list has been able to effectively use this tool to secure reserved spots at a local childcare facility for their employees.
• Flexible Scheduling: The most common support option, 68% of companies allow flexible work schedules, giving parents much-needed adaptability.
• Remote Work Options: Nearly as popular, 67% of companies offer remote work opportunities, easing the struggle of balancing work and childcare.
While some benefits—like flexible scheduling and remote work—are widely available, critical financial support options remain scarce. Employers looking to stand out in 2025 should consider expanding their childcare assistance programs to attract and retain top talent.
A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS
Kentucky is taking bold steps to address childcare challenges, as the newly launched Kentucky Collaborative on Child Care demonstrates. This statewide initiative brings together leaders from various sectors to find sustainable, long-term solutions for improving childcare access.
The Collaborative is a partnership between the Kentucky Chamber Foundation, the Kentucky Chamber Center for Policy and Research, and the Convergence Center for Policy Resolution. The Lift a Life Novak Family Foundation supports the initiative.
“With less than half of young Kentucky kids meeting Kindergarten readiness standards and continuing challenges with low workforce participation in the Commonwealth, we need consensus-driven solutions to increase access to high-quality childcare,” said Ashli Watts, President and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. “Convening is one of the Chamber’s key strengths, and we are proud to dedicate our resources to the Chamber Foundation and Center for Policy and Research to empower this new collaborative to work together on behalf of Kentucky’s kids, families, and economy.”
WHY YOUR BUSINESS SHOULD ACT NOW
Investing in childcare assistance is not just a corporate responsibility; it’s a strategic business decision. Companies that integrate childcare support into their employee benefits experience:
• Lower turnover and higher retention—Reliable childcare helps employees stay in their roles longer, reducing costly turnover.
• Increased productivity and reduced absenteeism Parents with stable childcare are more focused and less likely to miss work.
• Enhanced job satisfaction and engagement Employees who feel supported in balancing work and family commitments are more committed and motivated.
• A stronger employer brand and competitive edge—Family-friendly policies attract top talent and differentiate businesses in the job market.
• Improved gender equity and career progression Supporting childcare helps more parents, especially women, stay in the workforce and advance.
• Retention of experienced employees—Employees facing childcare challenges may leave the workforce; providing support helps retain skilled, knowledgeable talent.
By prioritizing childcare solutions, companies can drive economic growth while making a meaningful difference in the lives of their employees and their families. The future of Kentucky’s workforce starts with ensuring that parents have the support they need to succeed—both at home and at work.

Lyle Hanna Lyle Hanna
A LEGACY OF WORKPLACE EXCELLENCE & COMMUNITY IMPACT
Lyle Hanna’s commitment to fostering workplace excellence and strong communities has left an enduring impact on Kentucky’s business landscape. As a human resources leader and advocate, Hanna played a pivotal role in establishing the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program, an initiative that continues to recognize and promote exceptional workplaces across the Commonwealth.
Hanna’s values were shaped early in life through experiences traveling with his father, the Rev. Dr. Charles Morton Hanna, Jr. Every Sunday, Hanna would drive his father to provide ministry to 56 Presbyterian churches in small, rural Appalachian communities. These towns often faced significant economic hardship, with limited access to basic necessities such as running water. Yet, the people they met displayed generosity and resilience, lessons that
resonated deeply with Hanna. These formative experiences instilled in him a commitment to servant leadership, compassion, and the importance of community—principles that would guide his professional journey.
After earning a degree from The College of Wooster in Ohio, Hanna began his career in Human Resources, working for the City of Lexington before taking on roles with major organizations such as Texas Instruments, Jerrico, William M. Mercer, and Palmer & Cay. In each position, Hanna focused on improving workplace environments and enhancing employees’ experiences, always with an eye toward strengthening local and global communities.
Driven by a passion for helping businesses prioritize their people, Hanna founded Hanna Resource Group, a consulting firm dedicated to advancing human resource strategies. Recognizing the need for employers to engage and support their workforce, he collaborated with the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce to launch the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program.
The program annually highlights the top 100 workplaces in Kentucky, based on anonymous employee feedback.
Companies earn this recognition by demonstrating a commitment to employee satisfaction, engagement, and organizational culture. Earning a spot on the list is a prestigious honor that helps businesses attract top talent, enhance their brand, and boost workforce morale.
Hanna’s vision for the program was rooted in the belief that a company’s success is directly tied to the well-being of its employees. By recognizing organizations that prioritize their workforce, he helped reinforce the idea that human capital is an invaluable asset across industries.
Beyond his work in human resources, Hanna dedicated time and expertise to organizations such as SHRM and Habitat for Humanity. His legacy is one of mentorship, advocacy, and community-building—helping businesses put people first, guiding HR professionals at all career stages, and fostering meaningful connections that strengthen workplaces and communities alike.
Lyle Hanna’s influence will continue to shape Kentucky’s business community for years to come, inspiring future generations to champion workplace excellence and the power of putting people first.

Engagement: MORE THAN JUST A Buzzword,
IT'S
OUR
Foundation of Care
As vice president of HR Operations for Saint Joseph Health, I firmly believe that employee engagement is the cornerstone of providing exceptional patient care. It’s not just about happy employees; it’s about fostering a culture where our dedicated health care professionals feel valued, connected, and empowered to deliver their best. Engaged employees are more compassionate, resilient, and committed to our mission of healing and serving our community.
That’s why we place such high importance on understanding and nurturing engagement, starting from day one. We closely monitor our First Year Benefited Employee Retention (FYBER) rate, recognizing that a strong start is crucial for longterm commitment. We’ve recently rebranded our new employee orientation as “First Connections,” emphasizing the importance of building relationships from the very beginning. We encourage all our leaders to personally welcome new team members by meeting them for lunch on their first day, fostering a sense of belonging and connection within our health care family.
Our participation in the “Best Places to Work” process is also invaluable. The data we receive
provides critical insights into employee sentiment, highlighting areas where we excel in supporting our staff and identifying opportunities to improve their well-being and work environment.
We don’t just collect the data and file it away. We actively utilize it. Our “Spirit Teams,” employeeled engagement groups, are instrumental in analyzing the feedback and developing actionable strategies to address concerns and enhance the employee experience. These teams are the voice of our employees, ensuring that their perspectives are heard and acted upon, especially regarding the unique challenges and rewards of working in healthcare.
By prioritizing “First Connections,” tracking FYBER, listening to our employees, leveraging data-driven insights, and empowering our Spirit Teams, we are committed to creating a workplace where every member of our team feels valued, supported, and inspired to provide the highest quality care to our patients. Engagement is not a program; it’s a continuous journey, and we’re dedicated to making it a priority in our commitment to excellence.
