By Mia Matias ‘24 __________________________________ The Carl Schurz High School soccer team's journey to the Chicago Public Schools First North Conference victory was amazing.

With an impressive overall record of 16-4-1, they finished off rival Lakeview H.S. 3 -1 on October 17th to clinch the title.

Under the guidance of their coach, Mr. Lopez, the team's resilience and unity were unmatched.

CEO Martinez Visits Schurz!

On Wednesday, September 13, the CEO of CPS, Mr. Pedro Martinez, visited Schurz. For this honor, Schurz Principal Dr. Heidy Moran picked three students to help represent Schurz: Edgar Sanchez ‘24, Riddhem Kapoor ‘25, and Chermya Miller-Gilliam ‘26. We all were very nervous to meet Mr.Martinez and show him our school, even Dr.Moran said, “I usually don’t sleep well because I worry that it will be the one day I oversleep past my alarm clock.” This was a common feeling expressed by all Schurz hosts there, but after introductions and a conversation CEO Visits continued on page 4

Each year Schurz becomes a new home for new staff members. In this edition, we highlight new IB Coordinator Ms. Lee and new Digital Media teacher, Ms. Garcia.

Thalia & Daisy: Can you provide 5 fun facts about yourself?

Ms. Lee: 1. Before Schurz, I used to teach in Back of the Yards on the southside 2. When I was 28, I moved to Seoul, South Korea and stayed there for 9 years 3. I've traveled to over 22 different countries throughout Asia and Europe.

I'd like to go to South America next!

4. During college, I toured the country with a 14 member female a cappella group (Think, Pitch Perfect).

5. I used to play in a local rock band after graduating from college.

Thalia & Daisy: How is it going so far here at Schurz?

Ms. Lee: It's really wonderful. I have met funny, intelligent, and thoughtful students through the Personal Project. All of the teachers and staff have been friendly and welcoming. I also think the building is really cool. There are small doors in random places!

Thalia & Daisy: Why is IB important to you?

Ms. Lee: Lev Vygotsky writes,

I think IB offers that intellectual life, and Ms. KG (IB coordinator) and I hope to build it more into the culture of the school. We want all Schurz students to see themselves how we see them: Young people with great academic potential.

Eli: Can you provide 5 fun facts about yourself?

Ms. Garcia: 1. I was born and raised in Miami, FL 2. Foster mom who has fostered seven kids and has one of her own 3. Worked for magazines and have met CEOs/people in command and then I have worked with struggling people and

families. Witnessing the contrast between people who are so high and those who are so low made my view on the world change and opened me up to knowledge of the things people go through.

4. 20+ years of experience in photography and videography in working for Tribune, New York Times, Obama campaign, magazine and editorial stuff.

5. I went to Columbia College Chicago for Bachelor of Arts and North Park University Chicago for Master’s in education Eli: How is your experience so far at Schurz this year?

Ms. Garcia: Great, all the teachers and admin have been really supportive.

It has been a steep learning curve teaching in CPS. I’m familiar with working with students, but being in CPS is a learning experience.

Eli: Why is teaching Digital Media important to you?

Ms. Garcia: All arts are an outlet for students. It’s a real world skill and a different way of engaging students. It’s especially good for kids who struggle to come to school. _____________________ The Schurz Art Club is a place where anyone can come and express themselves through art.

Led by Ms. Marable and Ms. Giannopoulos, the club is held in room 312 on non flex Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3pm to 4pm. ‘‘The goal of the art club is to build the art community at Schurz,’’ said Ms. Giannopoulos. ‘‘It gives students an opportunity to interact and know each other outside of a classroom environment.’’ Ms. Marable and Ms. Giannopoulos started the club so that students who didn’t have art in their Above, original art by Destiny Rogers ‘24

schedules could still have the opportunity to practice art. The art club also allows students to do art projects that would take too long to do in class or that would be too expensive.

Students explored kinematic motion this quarter by building and customizing rockets, then launching them. They generated and collected data, from velocity and acceleration, to altitude, force and the effect of gravity when their parachute fails. October 24 was launch day.

Rocket launching “is one of those right of passage activities in any physics class,” said Mr. Arsenie, Physics teacher.

“Kinematics, or the mechanics of motion, is often a huge and challenging unit for the first-time physics student. However, by building and blowing up rockets, it also becomes fun and a bit unpredictable,” he said.

Jose Sanchez ‘25 agreed. “It felt like I was going to really make this rocket go into space,” he said. “I really enjoyed building it in class because it was a more hands-on learning experience.”

Felipe Aviles ‘25 added: “Building the rocket was fun and tricky since the different components and measurements we took needed to be exact.”

But working together with his group mates made the project easier, Aviles said. “We were able to successfully build and launch the rocket and put an egg in it to see if it would break, which it didn't, when coming down,” he explained.

The students also tested for speed, velocity, and acceleration through the duration of the launch. “Building the rocket overall was a fun learning experience,” Aviles said.

Fall Sports Roundup - Carl Schurz High School's fall sports season ended on a high note with coaches announcing their MVPs, celebrating outstanding student-athletes and teamwork in Cross Country, Flag Football, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Swimming and Girls Volleyball.

about how the Schurz community can improve marketing of neighborhood schools and the programs they offer, the group discovered that Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer is a very down-to-earth person. “I thought he was a very humble person and that he cares about improving our school district,” Dr. Moran said.

The tour of the school included visits to the following classrooms: Mr.Hurtado - bilingual math teacher, Mr.Martinez - bilingual history teacher, and Mr.Shelton - CTE Business program teacher. The reason for touring these classes is best explained by Dr. Moran: “I chose teachers who have a long history at Schurz. Mr. Hurtado and Mr. Martinez are both Schurz alumni, and they are also bilingual teachers so they could first-hand share the challenges of teaching oversized classes due to the influx of migrant students enrolling at Schurz. We also visited with the CTE business program as one of our student leaders, Chermya, really wanted us to visit her program!” Also, during the tour, Riddhem Kapoor got to tell Mr.Martinez who Carl Schurz was and some of the history of our historic building.

In conclusion, everything went really well in the time Mr.Martinez was here, but everyone wanted more time with the CEO because there is so much more to show at Schurz High School.
