We proudly celebrate 125 years of service, leadership, and commitment to the New York community.

This milestone reflects the dedication of generations of members whose work has strengthened the New York Junior League and advanced its mission.

Tonight, we celebrate and recognize this historic anniversary and the volunteers who made it possible.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 74th Annual Winter Ball, “Gilded Legacy: Celebrating 125 Years of Impact,” hosted by the New York Junior League (NYJL)! Thank you for joining us during this truly historic moment as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary Year. This evening is both a celebration and a reflection—honoring a remarkable legacy of service while recommitting ourselves to the work ahead. We are delighted to gather with you to celebrate the enduring spirit of volunteerism and to raise critical support for the NYJL’s charitable mission.

Tonight, we honor the dedication of generations of volunteers, extraordinary women whose leadership and service embody the very best of New York City. The collective community impact our volunteers have created reminds us that meaningful change is driven by individuals who are willing to step forward, build community, and act with purpose.

As New Yorkers continue to navigate an era defined by complexity and rapid change, I have been continually inspired by the steadfast commitment and solidarity of our volunteers. Time and again, they come together to strengthen the fabric of our city—preserving vibrant community spaces, ensuring access to nourishing meals, supporting women and children through moments of transition, and fostering genuine human connection. At the NYJL, we understand that challenges such as food insecurity rarely exist in isolation; they are often intertwined with barriers to education, health, and safe public spaces. By addressing even one of these needs, we help alleviate others, reinforcing the resilience and dignity of our communities.

Since its founding in 1901 by Mary Harriman and a group of visionary young women, the New York Junior League has remained steadfast in its mission to serve New Yorkers in need. For 125 years, the NYJL has responded to the evolving challenges of our city with innovation, compassion, and resolve. While the world has changed dramatically since 1901, our purpose and our relevance have not. Today, as we look toward 2026 and beyond, our commitment is as strong as ever—to women, children, young adults, seniors, and the city’s most marginalized populations.

The NYJL continues to empower women volunteers to address critical issues including economic insecurity, health and mental health challenges, and major life transitions—particularly for those emerging from foster care, homelessness, or the justice system. Through forward-thinking programs that build life skills, support social-emotional learning, and cultivate meaningful community spaces, we remain focused on creating lasting impact in a rapidly changing city.

In a city as large and diverse as New York, our impact is amplified by the generosity of supporters like you. The NYJL proudly partners with more than 60 community organizations and is powered by the dedication of a growing community of over 2,800 women volunteers. Together, we are committed to ensuring that women, children, and families have equitable access to opportunity, the resources to thrive, and the support systems necessary to reach their full potential. Alongside our volunteers, donors, partners, and civic leaders, we continue to strengthen the economic, social, and emotional well-being of New York City’s communities.

What an honor it is to recognize Valerie S. Mason with our 125th Anniversary Legacy Award. Established in honor of the NYJL’s 125th anniversary, the Legacy Award recognizes an extraordinary woman whose leadership, service, and professional achievements reflect the values and enduring impact of the organization. I invite you to learn more about Valerie’s achievements and commitment to civic leadership in the pages that follow.

As we celebrate 125 years of service, we do so with profound gratitude for the volunteers, donors, and partners whose generosity fuels our mission, and for a community that believes in the power of women to lead meaningful change. Together, we honor our past, rise to the challenges of the present, and move confidently toward a more equitable future for every New Yorker. We are deeply grateful to have you with us for this special occasion.

Yours in service, Jeri Powell President, 2024-2026

A Legacy of Leadership, Service, and Purpose

For Valerie S. Mason, leadership has always been rooted in service — to her profession, her community, and the city she has proudly called home her entire life. A native New Yorker born and raised in Astoria, Queens, Valerie has dedicated her time and talents to supporting institutions that strengthen the lives of women, families, and communities across New York City.

Valerie is a partner in the Banking and Finance Department at Otterbourg P.C., where she serves as Chair of the firm’s Lender Finance practice group. In this role, she advises some of the nation’s largest financial institutions, commercial finance companies, and hedge funds on complex financing transactions, including acquisition financings, refinancings, restructurings, and Chapter 11 debtor-inpossession and exit facilities. Her work spans both lender- and borrower-side representations, reflecting a career defined by strategic thinking, sound judgment, and integrity.

Colleagues describe Valerie as a steady, thoughtful leader who combines deep technical expertise with a commitment to mentorship and ethical decision-making. That leadership has earned her widespread recognition across the financial and legal communities. In January 2024, Valerie was honored as Executive of the Year by the New York

Institute of Credit, recognizing not only her professional success but also her dedication to supporting women in their careers. Later that year, she received the SFNet Impact Award for her contributions to the Secured Finance Network Women in Secured Finance Committee, an organization in which she has been an active and engaged leader for many years.

While Valerie’s professional accomplishments are significant, her commitment to civic engagement and nonprofit leadership is equally profound.

“Valerie S. Mason embodies the leadership the New York Junior League seeks to inspire,” said Jeri Powell, President of the New York Junior League. “Her career demonstrates how professional excellence, service, and mentorship can drive meaningful community impact.

As we celebrate 125 years, we are honored to recognize a leader whose work reflects our mission and encourages others to lead with purpose.”

For over two decades, she has been deeply involved in criminal justice reform through her service with the Women’s Prison Association, one of the nation’s oldest organizations dedicated to supporting women impacted by the criminal justice system and their families — and

a longtime community partner of the New York Junior League. Valerie previously served as President of the organization’s Board of Directors and currently serves as Chair of its Development Committee and a member of its Audit Committee.

Valerie credits the NYJL with shaping both her leadership path and her long-standing commitment to service. “When I first joined the League, I was eager to get involved, but wasn’t yet sure where my true interests lay,” Valerie reflected. “The NYJL gave me the opportunity to engage in a wide range of volunteer work, develop my interests, and hone my skills. Through the League’s training, I was introduced to the Women’s Prison Association — an organization I have now been involved with for more than 25 years. Even now, I never feel like I’ve left the League. NYJL volunteers set a standard of excellence, and wherever they serve, that excellence follows.”

Through this work, Valerie has developed a deep appreciation for the role of thoughtful governance in driving meaningful community change — a perspective she brings to her civic leadership. In November 2023, she was elected Chairperson of Manhattan Community Board 8, which encompasses the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Roosevelt Island. She was first appointed to the board in 2017 and has served as both First and Second Vice Chair, guiding the board through complex policy issues with clarity and care. Her dedication to community advocacy has been recognized by the New York State Assembly, which named her a Woman of Distinction in 2017, and by Straus News, which awarded her an “OTTY” in 2019.

Valerie’s commitment to service is deeply personal. A graduate of New York City public schools, she earned her undergraduate degree from Barnard College of Columbia University — the alma mater of New York Junior League founder Mary Harriman — before receiving her law degree from Duke University School of Law. She is a wife, mother, and longtime Upper East Side resident, actively engaged in neighborhood and faith-based organizations, including

service as a founding member and current President of the East 72nd Street Neighborhood Association, a former Trustee of The Brick Presbyterian Church in the City of New York, and a member of her cooperative board. She is also a member of the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy and a past Sustaining Member of the New York Junior League.

Offering advice to new NYJL members, Valerie encourages them to fully embrace the experience. “Immerse yourself in the work and enjoy your sister volunteers,” she said. “Before you know it, you’ll

“NYJL volunteers set a standard of excellence, and wherever they serve, that excellence follows.”

find your calling — and one day, you’ll be the one others are watching and learning from.”

Throughout her career, Valerie has lived the values at the heart of the New York Junior League: leadership development, civic responsibility, and meaningful impact. Her professional excellence, unwavering commitment to service, and dedication to mentoring women across industries reflect a legacy that extends far beyond any single role, title, or award.

As the New York Junior League celebrates its 125th anniversary, it is fitting to honor a woman whose life’s work embodies the enduring mission of the organization. Valerie S. Mason’s leadership — grounded in integrity, service, and purpose — serves as an inspiration for generations of women leaders to come.

Community Impact

In 1901, 19-year-old Mary Harriman gathered 80 young women to form the Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements to improve the living conditions of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Today, as we celebrate 125 years of impact, Mary’s legacy lives on as the New York Junior League (NYJL) responds to New York City’s most pressing socioeconomic challenges.

Powered by 2,800 women volunteers, the NYJL collaborates with over 60 New York City-based nonprofits and agencies to support women, children, and families in underserved communities. Sharing their diverse experiences and talents, trained NYJL volunteers engage with these populations through workshops specially customized to their needs, focusing on the arts, education, mentorship, health, and job readiness. The NYJL also responds to community partners’ requests for immediate support and invests time and funds in restoring public parks and community spaces to create welcoming environments conducive to health, recreation, socialization, and overall well-being.

The NYJL delivers community programs across four areas of focus:

Adult Education & Mentoring

Child Health & Welfare

Children’s Education, Culture & the Arts

City Impact

For the third annual Find The Good Day, the NYJL created 80 HomeNow kits and 30 kitchen kits, which were distributed by the New York City Department of Homeless Services. The HomeNow kits included sheets, bath towels, pots and pans, mops, other essentials for a new home, in addition to handmade cards. The kitchen kits included cookbooks, pot holders, and pantry basics like rice and pasta. The impact of the kits extends far beyond the items themselves, ensuring that families receiving them can move into new homes with joy and dignity.

Adult Education & Mentoring

NYJL Adult Education and Mentoring committees support clients from young adults to seniors as they face health challenges, combat loneliness, recover from traumatic events, navigate the criminal justice system, and prepare for their futures. Committees provide guidance, advocacy, and companionship while helping clients develop confidence, self-advocacy, and essential life skills.

In partnership with organizations including Urban Pathways, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the New Jewish Home, the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, the Manhattan Family Justice Center, and the English Speaking Union, NYJL volunteers lead workshops on goal-setting, career readiness, and life skills, provide emotional support and companionship, assist seniors and survivors of trauma, and help clients build independence and self-sufficiency.

In collaboration with The New Jewish Home, Senior Friends Committee volunteers host events like game nights and arts and crafts, offering residents an opportunity to socialize and explore their creativity.

Child Health &Welfare

Child Health and Welfare programs promote the idea that everyone should have the resources and opportunities needed to learn, grow, and thrive. Working with community partners like Esperanza Preparatory Academy, Good Shepherd Services, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA, NYJL volunteers mentor children and youth as they build healthy self-esteem and deeper self-awareness, develop positive relationships, and strengthen their physical and mental health. Volunteers take a positive approach, emphasizing individual strengths to practice responsibility, solve problems, and demonstrate agency. These programs also build layers of support by involving families and caretakers in workshops and events.

Each year, the Personal Advancement and Leadership (PAL) committee hosts an annual career day, inviting more than 80 young women from multiple community partners to the NYJL’s Astor House. Last year, students participated in sessions focusing on medical professions and entrepreneurship, made vision boards, heard from a guest speaker from the FDNY, and had the option of joining a Spanish-language panel.

Children's Education,Culture & the Arts

NYJL volunteers create programs and tools to enhance the social-emotional learning of children from communities with under-resourced schools and socioeconomic challenges. Partnering with community-based organizations such as the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center and SCAN-Harbor, NYJL volunteers work with children of all ages to inspire curiosity and foster educational aspirations through hands-on science and art activities, reading workshops, mentoring, and leadership development. Volunteers craft curricula that promote children’s self-expression through arts education, an undervalued and underfunded area of the public education system; visit cultural institutions and museums; and attend live musical and theatrical performances. With cultural and arts education, volunteers help children develop a love of learning.

The Artistic Journeys committee provides visual arts education to students aged 6–11, developing meaningful mentor relationships that help students broaden their horizons, increase self-esteem, and find a creative outlet through art.

City Impact

The NYJL City Impact committees mobilize volunteers for both immediate, short-term community service and restoration projects that help community partners carry out their missions and better respond to their clients’ needs. Each year, Playground Improvement Project volunteers revitalize a New York City park in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and Community Improvement Project volunteers renovate a much-loved community space at a nonprofit organization. The City Impact area’s three Done in a Day committees are always prepared to respond to community partners’ urgent need for volunteers, from serving hot meals at food kitchens to staffing free holiday toy markets.

The Community Improvement Project (CIP) committee provides skilled NYJL volunteers, funding, and in-kind services for capital improvements in community spaces at New York City-based nonprofits. In 2025, CIP renovated two classrooms at the Harlem School of the Arts (pictured above) and refreshed private counseling rooms at HOPE Center Harlem.

Congratulations to the NYJL on its 125 Anniversary and the remarkable th work of our Outstanding Sustainers whose efforts make an incredible difference every day in the New York City community. Thank you for your commitment, compassion, and the positive impact you bring to so many lives.

Celebrating 10 Years of Building Together

This year marks a proud milestone—10 years in business—and we couldn’t have reached it without the incredible partners who have been part of our journey. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the New York Junior League for their continued trust, collaboration, and support over the years.

One of the highlights of this partnership has been the beautiful construction of the Garde, a project that reflects design, craftsmanship, and community spirit. It stands as a testament to what is possible when vision and collaboration come together.

As we celebrate a decade of growth, we are grateful for the relationships that have shaped our story and look forward to many more years of building together.
